BELL PEPPER VARIETY TRIAL SPRING 19851
T. K. Howe and W. E. Waters
A replicated variety trial was conducted on fresh market sweet bell pepper
at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, Bradenton, FL in the spring
of 1985. In conjunction with the replicated trial, an observational area of
single plots was established to screen other commercial. cultivars and
advanced breeding lines.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Field preparation for the spring of 1985 began in April, 1983. Since the
land (an EauGallie fine sand) had not been farmed in 25 years, the soil was
treated in April, 1983 with 1200 Ib/acre superphosphate (0-20-0 containing
80 Ib/ton micronutrients as F503 oxide) and 2 tons/acre dolomite. The
following spring the land was utilized for the production of tomatoes.
Beds were formed in February, 1985 and incorporated starter fertilizer which
covered the full width of the bed, included 18-0-25-2 (1 lb/100 linear feet
of bed) high calcium lime (8.1 lb/100 LFB) and 34-0-0 (1 lb/100 LFB).
Dyfonate(R) was incorporated with the starter fertilizer. A single band of
18-0-25-2 (N-P205-K20-MgO) was applied into a shallow groove down the center
of each bed at the rate of 24.3 lb/100 linear feet of bed. The finished
beds were not fumigated and covered with black plastic mulch.
Seed of all pepper entries (Table 1) studied in the spring of 1985 were sown
on January 10, 1985 into wooden flats containing SAF-T-BLAST(R) (Mineral
Aggregates, Inc.), a processed product of spent coal, Seedlings were
transplanted 21 days later into TODD(R) Planter flats (model #150,
Speedling, Inc.) containing peat and vermiculite (1:1, v:v) amended with
dolomite (16.9 lb), superphosphate (5.6 ib) and Micromax(R) (1.1 lb), per 1
cu. yd. of media.
Transplants were set in the field on March 7, 1985 in two rows per bed
spaced 12 inches apart (6 inches to each side of the center fertilizer band)
with an in-row plant spacing of 8 inches. Plants were watered in with
Nutrileaf(R) 20-20-20 at 5 lb/100 eal water. Beds, row middles and ditch
banks were broadcast with Diazinonk ) to control mole cricket populations.
Limited resetting of the field occurred on March 11 and 14. There were four
replications of 30 plants per plot for each entry arranged in a randomized
complete block design.
IBiological Scientist III (Variety Trials) and Center Director, respectively.
Integrated pest management was used for insect control throughout the
season. Ambush(R) was applied four times, Vydate(R) was applied twice, and
Orthene(R) was applied once in a response to insect populations. Pepper
weevil, thrips and beet armyworm were the most serious insect pests.
A regular spray program was followed as prevention against fungal diseases.
Maneb was applied weekly during March and April and twice during May.
Copper was added to the maneb application for four consecutive weeks during
April due to the incidence of bacterial spot.
Fruit were harvested on May 9, 17, 24, and 31, 1985. Peppers were graded as
cull or marketable based on external quality. Total fruit harvested and
cull fruit were counted and weighed. A sample of 10 fruit per plot were
selected at random at the first harvest, and fruit were measured for length,
diameter, and number of lobes. Yields are'expressed in 25-lb cartons.
General weather information for spring 1985 is contained in Table 2.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Replicated Trial: Seasonal yield and fruit characteristics for the
replicated trial appear in Table 3. Yield ranged from 125.3 to 221.8
cartons/1000 LFB. Nine entries were not significantly different from each
other with respect to highest marketable yield. The nine entries were:
'Melody,' 'Crispy,' 'Bell Captain,' 'Pro Bell,' 'Better Belle,' 'Gator
Belle,' 'Liberty Belle,' XPH 5020, and 'Mission Belle'. Although these are
similar in total yield for the season, they differ in the proportion of
total yield produced at each harvest (Table 4). 'Crispy,' XPH 5020, and
'Pro Bell' yielded above 30% of the total seasonal yield at the first
harvest, whereas 'Bell Captain,' 'Melody,' 'Better Belle,' 'Gator Belle' and
'Mission Belle' produced greater than 30% of total yield at the third
harvest.
Most of the entries produced five or more fruit per plant as a seasonal
average. Average fruit weight was greatest for 'Melody' (5.6 oz), 'Bell
Captain' (5.4 oz), 'Early Calwonder' (5.4 oz), 'Espadon' (5.3 oz), 'Jupiter'
(5.2 oz) and 'Gator Belle' (5.0 oz) all of which were not significantly
different from one another. Cull fruit production ranged from 8.2% for
'Crispy' to 35.3% for WF75-6 for the season. The number of fruit per carton
ranged from 71.9 ('Melody') to 99.7 (WF75-6). 'Skipper,' 'Shamrock,' and
'Early Calwonder' produced the blockiest fruit, while 'Melody' produced the
most elongate fruit, based on the fruit length to diameter ratio. The
number of lobes per fruit ranged from 3.7 ('Skipper') to 2.8 ('Better
Belle').
Earliness as defined by the yield at the first harvest was best for
'Crispy,' XPH 5020, and 'Pro Bell' (Table 5); They were among the entries
which produced the greatest number of fruit per plant (more than 1.5
fruit/plant). Average fruit weight at the first harvest ranged from 5.3 to
7.1 oz ('Better Belle' & 'Melody', respectively). Cull production ranged
from 0.4 11.2% ('Better Belle' and WF75-6, respectively). Fruit size as
inferred by the number of fruit per carton was highest at the first
harvest. Three cultivars packed out at less than 60 fruit per carton
('Jupiter,' 'Early Calwonder,' and 'Melody').
By the second harvest on May 17, ten of the twenty entries could not be
separated from each other in terms of highest marketable yield (Table 6).
Yields ranged from 15.7 to 60.2 cartons/1000 LFB, corresponding to the
production of 0.4 to 1.3 fruit per plant. Fruit weight ranged from 5.1 to
6.3 oz. On average, cull production increased over that of the first
harvest, and ranged from 4.7 to 26.4%. Seven entries packed out at less
than 70 fruit per carton.
At the May 24th harvest (Table 7), five cultivars produced the greatest
yield; 'Melody,' 'Better Belle,' 'Bell Captain,' 'Jupiter,' and 'Gator
Belle'. 'Melody,' 'Bell Captain,' and 'Better Belle' produced over 35%, and
'Jupiter' over 40% of their total seasonal yields at the third
harvest. (Table 4). The number of fruit per plant ranged from 1.1 to 2.1 at
the third pick. Average fruit weight ranged from 3.5 to 5.5 oz (WF75-6 &
'Espadon', respectively). Cull production ranged from 5.2 to 35.9%
('Crispy' and WF 75-6, respectively). Four entries packed out fewer than 80
fruit per carton; 'Melody,' 'Bell Captain,' 'Liberty Belle,' and 'Espadon'.
By the fourth and final harvest on May 31, all but 3 entries produced
highest yields. There was also very little separation among the 20 entries
studied with respect to the number of fruit per plant (0.8 1.8), average
fruit weight (3.3 4.7 oz), and the number of fruit per carton (89.4 -
122.1). Cull production rose dramatically at the final harvest and ranged
from 16.3 50.0%.
Observational Trial: The 25 cultivars and breeding lines observed in single
plots consisting of 30 plants each, are listed in Table 9. Three cultivars
were included which were not sweet bell peppers, they are: 'Jalapa' (hot
jalapeno type), 'Key Largo' (yellow-green Cubanelle type), and 'Top Banana'
(yellow sweet banana type). The results in Table 9 may serve as an
indication of performance for future trial efforts. Direct comparisons
among the entries cannot be made objectively because of single plot design.
Any entry with a high production of fruit per plant and low cull production
may be worthy of future study. Fruit dimensions of the bell peppers will
help determine if an entry is blocky enough for commercial standards. Poor
performance of 'Big Bertha' and 2-BPTc-12 was due to misshapen, discolored
fruit (mottled, brown streaks) which may have been a virus-induced condition
(unconfirmed).
SUMMARY
Best performance during the spring 1985 pepper cultivar trial came from nine
entries based on yield and included 'Melody,' 'Crispy,' 'Bell Captain,'
'Pro Bell,' 'Better Belle,' 'Liberty Belle,' 'XPH 5020,' and 'Mission
Belle'. 'Melody,' although among the top yielding entries for the season,
produced elongated fruit and was later to mature. Of the other eight
entries, which had high seasonal yield, 'Crispy,' 'XPH 5020,' and 'Pro Bell'
were early.maturing types, while 'Better Belle', 'Bell Captain' and 'Gator
Belle' were later maturing.
