Cultivar Trials of Cotton, Peanut and Soybean

L. S. Dunavin'

Trials were conducted at WFREC, Jay in 2000 on cultivars of cotton, peanut, and soybean. The
season was hot and dry. Irrigation was needed but was not available for the peanut and soybean
trials and in only a very limited amount for cotton. Except for a few check entries, the soybean
trials consisted essentially of breeder's lines.

Conversion factors from English to metric units are presented in Table 1, and climatological data
are given in Table 2.

Cotton Cultivar Trials

Two cotton trials were conducted in 2000. There were 18 entries in the early trial and 20 entries
in the late trial. Procedures for each trial were the same. The trials were planted on 24 May 00.
They were located on a Red Bay sandy loam and separated by a small area.. Fertilizer included
400 pounds per acre of 3-9-18 applied on 1 June 00 and 200 pounds per acre of ammonium
nitrate applied on 20 July 00. We were only able to irrigate once at 0.75 inch on 7 June 00.
Temik was applied at 5 pounds per acre under the cotton. Treflan was applied at 1.5 pints per
acre and Cotoran at one quart per acre preplant. MSMA was applied at 1.5 pints per acre and
Cotoran at one quart per acre on 10 July. Pix was applied at 4 ounces per acre on 14 July. The
cotton was defoliated on 19 Oct. and harvested on 27 Oct. 00. The drought had a considerable
effect, and stands were quite variable. Yields were not very good. Data are presented for the
early trial in Table 3 and for the late trial in Table 4.

This research was supported by the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and approved for
publication as Journal Series No. t//-o o,: 7.

Peanut Cultivar Trials

Two trials were conducted. There was an early/medium trial and a late trial. They were based on
expected maturity. The trials were both located on a Red Bay sandy loam and were planted on
9 June 2000. This late planting was due to the drought. The trials were separated by a small
area. On both trials, fertilizer included 350 pounds per acre of 3-9-18 on 8 June 2000. Temik
was applied at the recommended rate to each trial. Prowl was applied to each trial on 8 June at
one quart per acre. Starfire was applied at one ounce per acre and Basagran at one pint per acre
at cracking on 23 June to each trial. Six applications of fungicides at recommended rates were
applied to each trial. The early/medium trial was plowed up on 7 Oct. 00 and harvested on
25 Oct. 00. The late trial was plowed up on 24 Oct. 00 and harvested on 30 Oct. 00. Irrigation
was not available for these trials. Data for the early/medium trial are presented in Table 5 and for
the late trial in Table 6. The high average yield in the early/medium trial was from a breeder's
line at 2780 pounds per acre. In the late trial, the high average yield was also from a breeder's
line and was 2040 pounds per acre.

Soybean Cultivar Trials

Trials were conducted in 2000 on Uniform Groups VI, VII, and VIII. There were 24 entries in
Group VI and 19 entries each in Groups VII and VIII. The trials were located on Red Bay sandy
loam and were planted on 13 June 00. Fertilizer included 350 pounds per acre of 0-30-15.
Irrigation was not available for these trials. The trials were harvested on 2 Nov. 00. The drought
had a considerable effect and yields were relatively low. Data are presented in Table 7 for Group
VI, in Table 8 for Group VII, and in Table 9 for Group VIII. In this dry year, yields ranged from
12.1 to 37.2 bushels per acre in Group VI. They ranged from 20.9 to 33.5 bushels per acre in
Group VII, and ranged from 22.1 to 42.7 in Group VIII.
