Canola Cultivar Trial, 1990-91

L. S. Dunavin1

A Canola cultivar trial was conducted in 1990-1991 which included six
cultivars planted broadcast and in rows spaced one foot apart in small plots.
These plots were planted on October 29, 1990 at seeding rates of 8 pounds per
acre broadcast and 6 pounds per acre in rows. Prior to planting, an application
of 400 pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was disked into the soil on
October 19. An application of 200 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate and 20
pounds per acre of sulfur was made on February 4. Following planting, both
broadcast and row plots were cultipacked. Germination and early growth appeared
to be good. Some minimum temperatures below freezing were recorded during the
first week in December, and some cold damage was noted by December 10; however,
it was of little significance. A little more damage was noted after the below-
freezing minimums at Christmas, and again it was of little significance. By
January 10, Hyola 40 was 10-15% in bloom (i.e. plants involved) and practically
100% (plants involved) by February 19. On the latter date, almost all cultivars
were showing some blooms with the fewest on PF2886/85. At this latter date some
whitened leaves and bent-over heads were observed. These were due to the 200 F
minimum on February 16. This cold caused petal shedding on damaged blooms and
stopped the filling of seed pods on damaged heads which had already begun to
fill. By March 4, all entries were heavily in bloom. Conditions were very moist
during this growing season, and a lot of mildew was present by April 22. Hyola
40 was almost ready for harvest by May 6; however, the ground was too wet. Pods
were turning grey and had been brown for some time, but there was no shattering.
We were able to harvest Hyola 40 on May 10. The rest of the cultivars were
harvested on May 30 which was the first time the soil had been dry enough for
harvest in three weeks. Yield data are presented in Table 1, conversion factors
are in Table 2, and climatological data are in Table 3. The highest average yield
of 1800 pounds is comparable with the yield of oil seed rapes in a trial at AREC,
Jay ten years ago.
