Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like to convert to metric
units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2 for Jay and in Table 12 for Marianna.

Russell bermudagrass and other grasses.
This trial included four bermudagrass entries and two "volunteer" entries. Russell and Tifton 85
bermudagrass were set in 1995, and Florakirk bermudagrass was set in 1996. DH#1
bermudagrass was set in 1997. Those set after 1995 were set into plots where other entries had
been removed. The two volunteer entries consisted of various grasses and weeds. Crabgrass was
a big component. In the volunteer plots with the lowest average yield, Cd90160 bermudagrass
was planted on 29 June 00; however, in the very dry weather which followed no germination was
obtained, and only the volunteers appeared. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam
(Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 was made on 13 April 00.
Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on 11 July 00 and at 100 pounds per acre
on 14 Aug. 00. Harvests were made on 29 June, 9 Aug., and 29 Sept. 00. The yields were
surprisingly good in view of the hot dry season. Yield data are presented in Table 3. DH#1
produced the highest average total yield, but it was not significantly higher than that of Florakirk.
Russell produced the least yield among the bermudagrasses. The yields from the volunteers were
relatively low.

Bahiagrass cultivar trial.
This trial included six entries of bahiagrass and was planted on 16 April 1997 on a Dothan fine
sandy loam (Plinthic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 was made on
13 April 00. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 100 pounds per acre on 22 June, 11 July, and 8
Aug. 00. Harvests were obtained on 1 June, 6 July, 3 Aug., 20 Sept., and 27 Nov. 00. Yield data
are presented in Table 4. It appeared that the dry season reduced the yields to some extent. The
yields of Tifton 18, 23, 7, and 9 in descending order of average yield were not significantly
different. Argentine yielded significantly more than Pensacola.

Warm-season perennial grasses.
In the 1999-2000 season, Flame crimson clover was overseeded on the eight perennial grasses:
Tifton 9, Tifton 18, Pensacola, and Argentine bahiagrass and Tifton 85, Florakirk, Tifton 78, and
Coastal bermudagrass. It was also overseeded on four sets of well-prepared plots. The data for
the clover yield has been presented in WFREC Research Report WF00-11. These are relatively
old plots of grass, and the trial is located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An
application of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 was made on 13 April 00. Ammonium nitrate was
applied at 100 pounds per acre on 11 July and 11 Aug. 00. Harvests were obtained on 4 May,
7 July, 4 Aug., and 21 Sept. 00. The season was hot and dry. The plots which had been well-
prepared for clover were allowed to produce whatever volunteer grass and weeds which
appeared. Yield data are presented in Table 5. Tifton 18 and Tifton 9 bahiagrass produced the
most dry matter.

Summer annual grasses.
This trial contained 10 millet entries, 10 sorghum-sudangrass hybrid entries, and one forage
sorghum entry. The latter should have been in a silage trial, but we didn't conduct one so I just
put it in this trial to see what happened. The trial was planted on 28 April 00 on an Orangeburg
sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). See Table 2 and note that we got 0.15 inches of rain in the whole
month of May. Only because we had good moisture at planting did we get a stand, and it was
slow to develop, and was less than desired. An application of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24
was made on 22 May 00. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 100 pounds per acre on 23 June and
24 Aug. and at 200 pounds per acre on 8 Aug. 00. Four harvests were obtained. These were on
22 June, 20 July, 17 Aug., and 27 Sept. 00. Yield data are presented in Table 6, and maturity data
are presented in Table 7.

Gamagrass and Pennisetum orientale.
Five gamagrass entries and six introductions of Pennisetum orientale along with a Big bluestem
entry were set into a replicated row trial on 17 September 98. Plants were added as seemed
necessary on 28 April 99. These additional plants were from the greenhouse. The trial was
located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre

of 8-24-24 was made on 13 April 00. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on
17 May and 8 Aug. and at 100 pounds per acre on 22 June 00. Harvests were obtained on 9 May,
20 June, 25 July, 31 Aug., and 28 Sept. 00. Yield data are given in Table 8.

Alfalfa cultivar trial.
A second year's data was obtained from 15 cultivars of alfalfa. These were planted on
13 December 1998 on a Fuquay loamy sand (Plinthic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds
per acre of 0-20-20 and 4 pounds per acre of elemental boron was made on 13 March 00.
Applications of 200 pounds per acre of 60% muriate of potash were made on 22 June and
8 Aug. 00. Harvests were made on 1 March, 26 April, 19 June, 19 July, and 18 August. Stands
in this trial were somewhat less than desired, and variability was considerable. There was no
significant difference at any harvest (t.05). Yield data are presented in Table 9.

Perennial peanuts.
Five selections of Arachis pintoi were set in the field for observation in 2000. In this very dry
summer none of these made very much vertical growth but they did spread rather well
horizontally. If they survive the rather cold winter, further observations will be made. Florigraze
rhizoma peanut old stands did not produce very high yields in the dry season of 2000. They only
produced one-quarter to one-third as much as in past years.

Temperate corn.
A short and a mid and full-season corn hybrid performance trial were conducted at Jay during the
2000 growing season. High temperatures, drought, and stand loss caused considerable variation
in performance among plots within the tests. Yields ranged from 19 to 40 and 33 to 57 bushels
per acre for the short and the mid and full-season entries, respectively. After careful analysis and
review of the data it appears that the results of these trials may not accurately reflect the
performance potential of all test entries. Since this data could potentially be misleading if used in
making decisions concerning hybrid selection, the decision was made not to present them in this
publication. Results from these tests will be provided upon request.

Grain sorghum-Marianna.
Two plantings of grain sorghum were made at NFREC, Marianna in 2000 on Chipola loamy
sand. The early planting of 23 entries was made on 19 April, and the late planting of 19 entries
was made on 12 July. Both plantings were irrigated. Fertilization for each planting included 39
pounds each ofN and P205 and 30 pounds K20 per acre preplant. A sidedress of 85 pounds N
was applied. The harvest from the early trial was obtained on 2 August and the harvest from the
late trial was on 3 November. Data with respect to yield and other agronomic characteristics are
presented in Table 10 for the early planting and in Table 11 for the late planting. Rainfall data
for Marianna are presented in Table 12.

April was relatively dry, May was extremely dry, there was a lot of
precipitation in the last half of June, July was below normal but had fair
distribution, August was below normal, and September was above normal in
precipitation. The dry May affected germination. It was necessary to treat
for chinch bugs in early August, and they did some damage to millet.
