Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like to convert to
metric units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2 for Jay and in Table 18 for
Marianna.
Warm-season perennial grasses.
In 1999, there were eight warm-season grasses in this trial Four plots in each replication which
had previously held grasses in the early years of this trial were fallowed. Cherokee red clover was
overseeded on all plots on 23 December 1998. These were relatively old plots of grass. The
bahiagrasses were planted on 22 April 92, and rooted plants ofFlorakirk and Tifton 78
bermudagrass were set on 23 April 92. Tifton 85 bermudagrass was set on 14 April 93, and
Coastal bermudagrass was set on 18 April 94. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy
loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on
28 April 99. Ammonium nitrate was applied to provide 50 pounds per acre of N on 26 May, 16
July, 5 Aug, and 8 Sept. 99. Harvests were made on 22 April, 20 May, 22 June, 29 July, 31 Aug.
and 14 Oct. 99. Yields for dry matter of grass only are presented in Table 3. Clover was present
at 4 harvests, and yields of clover are presented in Table 4. Season combined yields are given in
Table 5.
Russell bermudagrass and other grasses.
This trial included four bermudagrass entries and two "volunteer" entries. Russell and Tiflon 85
bermudagrass were set in 1995, and Florakirk bermudagrass was set in 1996. DH#1
bermudagrass were set in 1997. The two volunteer entries consisted of various grasses and
weeds. Crabgrass was a large component. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam
(Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre of an 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 9
April 99. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 100 pounds per acre on 11 June, 26 July, and 8 Sept.
99. Harvests were made on 7 June, 14 July, 19 Aug., and 29 Sept. 99. Yields were lower than in
1998; however, less N was applied. The volunteer plots were not harvested in June, and their
total yields were relatively low. Yield data are presented in Table 6. Tifton 85 produced the
highest yield of dry matter. Russell had the lowest average total yield among the bermudagrasses;
however, it was not significantly lower than that ofFlorakirk.

Bahiagrass cultivar trial
A third year's data was obtained from a trial planted on 16 April 97 on a Dothan fine sandy loam
(Plinthic Paleudult). This trial contained six entries. An application of 400 pounds per acre of an
8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 20 April 99. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 100 pounds per
acre on 2 June, 16 July, 5 Aug., and 8 Sept. 99. Harvests were obtained on 27 May, 30 June, 28
July, 30 Aug., and 14 Oct.. Yields were considerably lower than in 1998. Yield data are
presented in Table 7.
Summer Annual Grasses.
This trial contained five millet entries and five sorghum-sudangrass hybrid entries. The trial was
planted on 29 April 99 on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 400
pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 13 April 99. Ammonium nitrate was applied at
200 pounds per acre on 28 June and at 100 pounds per acre on 29 July and 8 Sept. 99. Four
harvests were obtained. These were on 18 June, 23 July, 30 Aug., and 5 Oct.99. Data are
presented in Tables 8 and 9.
Gamagrass and Pennisetum orientale.
Five gamagrass entries and six introductions ofPennisetum orientale along with a Big bluestem
entry were set into a row trial on 17 September 98. Plants were added as seemed necessary on 28
April 99. These additional plants were from the greenhouse. The trial was located on an
Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic paleudult). Rows were 12 feet long on 5- foot spacing which was
probably a little wide but allowed for easier handling of equipment The original setting was of
rooted plant divisions from old plantings at WFREC. This process was probably more favorable
to the Pennisetums and is probably reflected in the yields. An application of 400 pounds per acre
of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on 13 May 99. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per
acre on 16 July 99 and at 100 pounds per acre on 8 Sept 99. Harvests were made on 6 July, 18
Aug., and 23 Sept. 99. Yield data are presented in Table 10.
Florakirk bermudagrass.
A long-term fertility trial was begun on Florakirk bermudagrass in 1989. Five rates of fertilizer
have been applied each year. Elements were balanced in a 2-1-1 NPK regime. Nitrogen has been
applied from very low to very high rates (31.25 500 lbJacre N) with each higher rate twice that
of the next lower rate. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). All
P and K were applied in the spring along with the first of three equal applications of N. Over the
years, invading grasses have about taken over some of the stands at the lower fertility levels. In
some years we have been able to control invaders to some extent. In 1999, the very low yields at
the low rates were mostly due to stand loss. Weedy invaders were not counted in the yield. Yield
data for 1999 are presented in Table 11.
Alfalfa cultivar trial.
Fifteen cultivars of alfalfa were planted on 13 December 1998 on a Fuquay loamy sand (Plinthic
Paleudult). Prior to planting, 400 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer was disked into the soil
Four pounds per acre of elemental boron was applied on 23 December 98. An application of 200
pounds per acre of 60% muriate of potash was made on 28 June 99. Harvestes were obtained on
3 May, 17 June, 26 July, and 8 Sept. 99. Average total yields varied from 10,490 pounds per acre
to 7,930 pounds per acre; however, due to considerable variability there was no significant
difference at any harvest (t.05). Yield data are given in Table 12.
Observations on Arachis pintoi.
A small planting ofArachis pintoi was made on 27 May 1994. It was located on Orangeburg
sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre of 0-20-20 fertilizer was
made on 13 May 99. Two harvests were obtained in 1999. These were on 29 July and 15 Oct.
Yield data for 1999 and for the two previous years are presented in Table 13.
Temperate corn.
Cultivars of 22 corn hybrids were plantedin a replicated field trial in. 1999 on a Dothan fine sandy
loam (Plinthic Paleudult) to determine yield and ear quality. The trial was planted on 6 April 99 at
a seeding rate of 2 seeds per foot of row in rows three feet apart. An application of 500 pounds
per acre of 8-24-24 was made on 5 April 99, and 500 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate was
applied on 22 April 99. Corn was thinned on 6 May 99. Other normal farming practices were
applied to the experimental area. Irrigation was not available to the area. Corn was harvested on
18 Aug. 99. There was essentially no lodging. Data for yield, ear quality, and ear height are
presented in Table 14 and multiple year averages are given in Table 15.
Grain Sorghum-Marianna
Two plantings of grain sorghum were made at NFREC, Marianna in 1999 on Chipola loamy sand.
The early planting of 26 entries was made on 15 April, and the late planting of 24 entries was
made on 15 July.
The April planting was irrigated 7 times at one inch each time. Fertilizer for the April planting
included 400 lb. 16-19-16 + minors on 20 April, 300 lb. 13-13-13 on 27 April, and 250 lb.
ammonium nitrate on 20 May. The harvest was obtained on 10 August, and KS989 had the highest
average yield at 6,548 lb./A Data with respect to yield and other agronomic characteristics for the
April planting are presented in Table 16.
The July planting was irrigated 5 times at one inch each time. Fertilizer for the July planting
included 400 lb. 16-19-16 + minors on 20 July, 300 lb. 13-13-13 on 27 July, and 250 lb.
ammonium nitrate on 20 August. The harvest was obtained on 16 November, and KS989 again
had the highest average yield. The yield was 5,167 lb./A which was lower than the April yield;
however, it was still a good yield. Data with respect to yield and other agronomic characteristics
for the July planting are given in Table 17.
Rainfall data for Marianna are presented in Table 18.
Grain Sorghum Jay
A grain sorghum trial was not conducted at Jay in 1999;. however, Table 19 presents several yields
and averages from work done by Dr. H. A. Peacock from 1992-1997 at WFREC, Jay.
