Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like to convert to metric
units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2 for Jay and in Table 15 for Marianna.

Russell and other bermudagrasses.
This trial included five bermudagrass entries. One of the entries, Cd90160, was sprigged and
seeded as two separate entries in 2001. Plots which contained volunteer grasses in 2000 were
utilized for these entries. Russell and Tifton 85 were set in 1995, and Florakirk was set in 1996.
DH#1 was set in 1997. Those set after 1995 were set into plots where other entries had been
removed. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application
of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 was made on 16 April 01. Ammonium nitrate was applied at
100 pounds per acre on 28 June and 23 August 01 and at 200 pounds per acre on 27 July 01.
Harvests were made on 19 June, 24 July, 22 Aug., and 19 Sept. 01. Yields were somewhat lower
than expected and are presented in Table 3.

Gamagrass and Pennisetum orientale.
Five gamagrass entries and six introductions of Pennisetum orientale along with a Big bluestem
entry were set into a replicated trial on 17 September 98. Plants were added as seemed necessary
on 28 April 99. These additional plants were from the greenhouse. The trial was located on an
Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24
was made on 16 April 01. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 100 pounds per acre on 30 April,
28 June, 19 July, and 23 August 01. Five harvests were obtained in 2001. These were made on
25 April, 19 June, 18 July, 22 August, and 19 September. Yields were somewhat lower than
obtained in 2000 and are shown in Table 4.

Warm-season perennial and annual grasses.
This trial was conducted utilizing relatively old plots of perennial grasses and plots in the trial
from which other grasses had been removed. These empty plots were seeded to entries of Red
River crabgrass, Cd90160 bermudagrass, Tifleaf3 millet, and SSII sorghum-sudangrass on
10 April 01. Dry weather in late April and May was unfavorable. Tifleaf3 and SSII probably
should have been removed from the trial since the stands were so poor, but they were left in to
see what they would do under the conditions. See the table in this report showing their
performance in the Summer Annual Grass Trial. This warm-season perennial and annual grass
trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds
per acre of 8-24-24 was made on 16 April 01. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 100 pounds per
acre on 28 June, 13 August, and 13 September 01. Yields in this trial were lower than expected
and are given in Table 5.

Summer annual grasses.
There were 10 millet entries and 7 sorghum-sudangrass entries in this trial. The trial was planted
on 12 April 01 on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An application of 400 pounds
per acre of 8-24-24 was made on 9 April 01. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per
acre on 14 May 01 and at 100 pounds per acre on 12 June, 12 July, and 13 August 01. Harvests
were made on 7 June, 6 July, 3 August, and 11 September 01. Yields were better in 2001 than in
2000 and are presented in Table 6. Maturity data for the grasses at harvest are shown in Table 7.

White clover.
A White clover trial was established in the fall of 2000. Ten entries were planted on 15 Nov. 00
at 6 pounds of inoculated seed per acre except for the entry, Advantage, which was seeded at
about 2 pounds per acre (all we had available). Sometimes white clover is planted at this low
rate, but more is better. Prior to planting, an application of 400 pounds per acre of 0-30-15
fertilizer was disked into the soil. The soil was a Dothan fine sandy loam (Plinthic Paleudult).
Following planting, the area was cultipacked. Growth was generally poor during the winter. In
early spring, growth slowly increased until about mid-April when dry weather severely restricted
growth through May. No yields were taken at the time; however, stands were estimated, and

these are presented in Table 8. The low seeding rate for Advantage apparently did affect the
stand considerably. Under better conditions with the clover making some growth, harvests were
made on 27 June and 3 Aug. 01. Data for these harvests are given in Table 8. Some of the
information from this trial was previously presented in WFREC Research Report WF01-09.

Bahiagrass overseeded with Cherokee red clover.
A trial established in 1997 was overseeded on 28 November 00 with Cherokee red clover. This
trial contained six entries ofbahiagrass which were planted on 16 April 97 on a Dothan fine
sandy loam (Plinthic Paleudult). The clover was planted broadcast over the bahiagrass stubble
the day after taking a bahiagrass harvest. This harvest was of dead grass five days following a
hard freeze (24 degrees F). Seeding was at the rate of 10 pounds per acre of inoculated seed. No
fertilizer was applied at the time of seeding. An application of 400 pounds per acre of 8-24-24
was made on 16 April 01. Ammonium nitrate was applied for the grass at 100 pounds per acre
on 23 May, 3 July, 30 July, and 24 August 01. Harvests containing clover were made on 15
May, 29 June, and 27 July. Harvests containing only grass were made on 23 August and 26
September. Yield data are presented in Tables 9, 10, and 11 for clover, grass, and the
combination respectively.

Perennial peanuts.
Two old stands of Florigraze rhizoma peanut were observed for yields in this year with dry
periods following the very dry year of 2000. The two old stands were located on Orangeburg
(Typic Paleudult) and Red Bay (Rhodic Paleudult) soils. The stand on Red Bay was established
in January 1976, and the stand on Orangeburg was established in December 1979. Data for
yields are presented in Table 12 and indicate that yields from the stand on Orangeburg were
better in 2001 than in 2000 but considerably less than in 1999 while the yields on Red Bay
decreased each year. This was just an observation, and there may be other factors than weather
contributing to the decreases. Unfortunately this was probably the last observation on these old
areas both of which have been used for several trials in the past. Changes coming about will
probably result in the termination of these old plots.

Grain sorghum-Marianna.
Two plantings of grain sorghum were made at NFREC, Marianna in 2001 on Chipola loamy
sand.
The early planting of 16 entries was made on 20 April 01, and the late planting of 12 entries was
made on 2 July 01. Both plantings were irrigated. Fertilization for each planting included 350
pounds per acre of 13-13-13 and 350 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate. The harvest from
the early trial was obtained on 13 August, and the harvest from the late trial was obtained on
19 October. Data with respect to yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table
13 for the early trial and in Table 14 for the late trial. Rainfall data for Marianna are presented in
Table 15. Yields in the early trial ranged from 4052 to 6248 pounds per acre and in the late trial
from 1711 to 3680 pounds per acre.

NOTE: The warm-season annuals, Tifleaf 3, SSII, and Red River were planted on
10 April 01 as was the perennial, Cd90160. Dry weather in late April and
May was unfavorable. Tifleaf 3 and SSII probably should have been removed
since the stands were so poor. See the table in this report showing their
