JAY, AREC RESEARCH REPORT WF91-2 JANUARY, 1991

Variety Trials of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Grain Sorghum, Mii1'yand
Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrids, and Alfalfa, 1990.

Warm-Season Perennial Grasses: .
This trial included an experimental bermudagrass at two fertility levels,
Tifton 78 bermudagrass, Tifton 44 bermudagrass, Florona stargrass, and Tifton
9 bahiagrass. The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy loam soil (Rhodic Paleu-
dult). An application of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on
March 5, 1990 and again on September 3, 1990. Ammonium nitrate was applied at
200 pounds per acre on May 4, June 15, and July 27 and at 100 pounds per acre
on September 3. One treatment of the experimental bermudagrass had a double
rate of ammonium nitrate each date of application and a double rate of 8-24-24
on September 3. Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those
who would like to convert to metric units. Climatological data are presented
in Table 2. These grasses were harvested five times and data are presented in
Table 3. The experimental bermudagrass produced 1.6 times more dry matter at
the higher fertility level. The Tifton 44 stand has deteriorated; however, the
Florona and Tifton 78 stands have deteriorated even more, and the lower yields
reflect this.

Millet and Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrids:
Eight millets and six sorghum X sudangrass hybrids were included in this
trial. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). An
application of 250 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on March 28,
1990, and ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on June 12 and at
100 pounds per acre on July 17 and August 10. The trial was planted on April 12.
Data for yield and maturity are presented in Tables 4 and 5. Chinchbugs in late
July severely damaged millet.

Alfalfa:
Twelve alfalfa varieties were included in the 1990 trial. These were planted
on October 28, 1987 on an Orangeburg loamy sand (Typic Paleudult). An application
of 400 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer and 6 pounds per acre of boron was
applied on October 2, 1989, and applications of 200 pounds per acre of 60% muriate
of potash were applied on March 29, May 29, and July 27, 1990. Sulfur at 20 pounds
per acre was applied on May 29, 1990. Harvests were made on March 28, April 26,
May 25, June 22, July 25, and August 31, 1990. Yield data are presented in Table 6,
and yields were rather good for the top five cultivars. Stand estimates are present-
ed in Table 7 and show some deterioration as would be expected by the end of the
third year. We are looking forward to seeing what stands are present in the spring
of 1991.

Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 56 grain sorghum hybrids were tested in a replicated trial in
1990 on an Orangeburg sandy loam to determine yield, heading data, head type,
lodging, disease reaction, height, and bird depredation. All cultivars were
planted April 27 at a seeding rate of 12 seed per foot of row (8 to 12 lbs seed/A
depending on seed size) in rows 3-feet apart. A preplant application of 250 lbs/A
8-24-24 was disked into the soil and 100 lbs/A ammonium nitrate was applied as a
top dressing. A preemergence application of 1 lb of atrazine and 4 lbs. of propa-
chlor per acre controlled weedy grasses and broadleaves except some morningglory.
Soil insect control consisted of 20 lbs/A Furadan applied in a band 6 inches
under the row prior to planting. Grain was harvested August 1 and dried to 12%
moisture before weighing. Precipitation for April through July at AREC, Jay is
shown in Table 8.

Yields were excellent for most cultivars with a test average of 7,740 lbs/A
grain. The lowest yield in the test was 4,940 lbs/A grain. The rainfall was
adequate and fairly evenly distributed and allowed the grain sorghum plants to
produce an excellent yield. There were 23.92 inches of rainfall (Table 8) from
April 1 through July 31. The 42-year average for this time period at AREC, Jay
is 24.51 inches. Leaf diseases (primarily anthracnose, Colletotrichum graminicola)
were moderate to light.

Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table 9.
The highest yielding hybrid in the test was DeKalb DK-49 with 10,450 lbs/A
followed by Cargill 6,670with 10,260 lbs/A, andDeKalb X-864 with 10,160 lbs/A
grain. Nine other entries yielded more than 9,000 lbs/A grain. The mean yield
for the test was 7,740 lbs/A (about 24 bushels/A less than the highest yielding
entry in our hybrid corn test but 5.5 bu/A more than the average yield of our
hybrid corn test). There was no damage from bird depredation in this test. Two-,
three-, four-, and five-year average yields of hybrids grown at AREC, Jay are
presented in Table 10. The highest yielding hybrids averaged over five, four,
three, and two years were Delta and Pine Land Deltapine G1711, Jacques J606,
Helena HyPerformer 1330-DR, and DeKalb X-866, respectively.

Grain Sorghum Marianna:
Two plantings of grain sorghum hybrids were made at AREC, Marianna in 1990.
The early planting of 57 hybrids was made April 16 and the late planting of the
same 57 hybrids was made July 12. Both plantings were irrigated. Fertilizer for
the early-planted test included 400 lbs/A of 15-7-15 on April 26 and 250 lbs/A
ammonium nitrate applied as a top dressing on May 17. Fertilizer for the late-
planted test included 400 lbs/A of 13-13-13 on July 17 and 200 lbs/A ammonium
nitrate applied as a top dressing on August 7. The early test was harvested
July 26 and the late test on November 2. Data on yield and other agronomic
characteristics from the early and late plantings (April and July) are presented
in Tables 11 and 12. The highest yielding hybrid from the early planting (Table
11) was Northrup King Savanna 5 with 7,720 lbs/A grain followed by Alabama Farmers
Cooperative FFR 331-DR with 7,190 lbs/A and Helena HyPerformer 1330-DR with 6,820
lbs/A grain. Average yield for the test was 6,210 lbs/A.

The highest yielding hybrid from the late planting (Table 12) was Asgrow
GS-712 with 3,340 lbs/A grain followed by Alabama Farmers Cooperative AFC861 and
FFR 331-DR with 3,220 lbs/A and 3,150 lbs/A grain, respectively. Average yield
for the test was 2,560 lbs/A grain. Late planting hybrids yielded poorly because

- 2 -

of a high incidence of anthracnose and fusarium stalk rot and a critical
irrigation at heading was missed.

Yields for the early (April) planting at Marianna in 1988, 1989, 1990, and
two- and three-year average yields are presented in Table 13. The highest yield-
ing hybrid averaged over three years was Northrup King Savanna 5 with 6,259 lbs/A
grain followed by Alabama Farmers Cooperative FFR 331-DR with 6,222 lbs/A. The
highest yielding hybrid averaged over two years was Northrup King Savanna 5 with
6,358 lbs/A grain followed by Alabama Farmers Cooperative FFR 331-DR with 6,284
lbs/A.

Yields for the late (July) plantings at Marianna in 1988, 1989, 1990, and
two- and three-year average yields are presented in Table 14. The highest yield-
ing hybrid averaged over three years was Northrup King Savanna 5 with 3,694 Ibs/A
grain followed by Asgrow GS-712 with 3,319 lbs/A and HyPerformer HSC Wings with
3,225 lbs/A. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over two years was DeKalb
DK-64 with 2,999 lbs/A grain followed by Northrup King Savanna 5 with 2,965
lbs/A and GroAgri Seed GSC 1214 with 2,936 lbs/A.

The average of the grain sorghum hybrids grown at both Jay and Marianna are
presented in Table 15. The highest yielding hybrid from the average of the two
locations was DeKalb X-864 with 8,420 lbs/A grain. This was followed by Cargill
6670 with 8,410 lbs/A and HyPerformer 1330-DR with 8,400 lbs/A grain. Other
hybrids that averaged more than 8,000 lbs/A grain were DeKalb DK-49 (8,220 lbs/A),
Alabama Farmers Cooperative FFR 331-DR (8,140 lbs/A), Asgrow GS712 (8,100 lbs/A),
and DeKalb X-866 (8,060 lbs/A). The overall mean for the two tests was 6,960
lbs/A grain (116 bushels).
