Variety Trials of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Grain Sorghum,
Summer Annual Grasses, Alfalfa, and Aeschynomne e, .
L. S. Dunavin, H. A. Peacock. D. W. Gorbett!
Warm-Season Perennial Grasses:
The perennial grass trial included an experimental bermudagrass at two
fertility levels, Tifton 44 bermudagrass, Tifton 78 bermudagrass, Florona star-
grass, and Tifton 9 bahiagrass. The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy loam
soil (Rhodic Paleudult). An application of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fer-
tilizer and 20 pounds per acre of sulfur was made on April 1, 1991, and the
application of 8-24-24 was repeated on September 3, 1991. Ammonium nitrate was
applied at 200 pounds per acre on June 5, July 10, and August 9, 1991, and at
100 pounds per acre on September 3, 1991. One treatment of the experimental
bermudagrass had a double rate of ammonium nitrate each date of application and
a double rate of 8-24-24 on September 3.
(:ij,)
,f
Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would like
to convert to metric units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2. These
grasses were harvested five times, and data are presented in Table 3. The exper-
imental bermudagrass produced 1.5 times more dry matter at the higher fertility
level. Low yields from the other bermudagrasses and the stargrass reflect con-
tinued deterioration of stands. Tifton 9 bahiagrass continued to produce good
yields.
Summer Annual Grasses:
Fifteen sorghum X sudangrass hybrids, eight millets, and one rhodesgrass
were included in this trial. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam
(Typic Paleudult). An application of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer
was made on April 11, 1991. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre
on June 5 and at 100 pounds per acre on July 10 and August 20, 1991. The trial
was planted on April 12, 1991. Data for yield and maturity are presented in
Tables 4 and 5. Sweet Sioux V and HiGrazer sorghum X sudangrasses along with*
GK600 millet were the leaders in the trial. The rhodesgrass was slow to get
started but finished with a fairly good yield in September.
Alfalfa:
Twelve alfalfa varieties were included in the 1991 trial. These were planted
on October 28, 1987 on an Orangeburg loamy sand (Typic Paleudult). An application
of 400 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer and 4 pounds per acre of boron was
made on September 25, 1990, and applications of 200 pounds per acre of 60%
muriate of potash were made on June 5, and August 20, 1991. Harvests were obtained
on April 23, May 29, June 27, August 2, and September 5. The latter was the twenty-
first harvest since planting. Yield data are presented in Table 6 and estimated
stands in Table 7. As can be seen from this latter table, the trial is essentially
over with stands practically depleted. A few plots still look fair, and these will
be observed through the winter, but no harvests are anticipated for 1992.
Associate Professor of Agronomy, Professor and Center Director, AREC, Jay, respec-
tively, and Professor, AREC, Marianna.
Aeschynomene:
Four breeder's lines and Fla. common aeschynomene were included in this
trial. The trial was located on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). It
was planted on July 12, 1991. This was the second planting since the first one
was totally destroyed by a flash flood. An application of 300 pounds per acre
of 0-30-15 fertilizer was made on July 2, 1991. Harvests were obtained on
September 16 and November 4, 1991. The latter harvest was made following a low
temperature of 280 F in the early morning of November 4 which killed the
aeschynomene. Yield and bloom data are presented in Table 8 and show no signi-
ficant difference in yield among the lines although Fla. common had the highest
average yield for the first harvest and for total yield.
Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 59 grain sorghum hybrids were tested in a replicated trial in
1991 on an Orangeburg sandy loam to determine yield, heading date, head type,
lodging, disease reaction, height, and bird depredation. All cultivars were
planted June 5 at a seeding rate of 12 seed per foot of row (8 to 12 lbs seed/A
depending on seed size) in rows 3-feet apart. A preplant application of 250
lbs/A 8-24-24 was disked into the soil and 350 lbs/A ammonium nitrate was
applied as a top dressing. A preemergence application of 1 lb of atrazine and 4
lbs of propachlor/A controlled weedy grasses and broadleaves except some morning-
glory. Soil insect control consisted of 20 lbs/A Counter 15G applied in a band
6 inches under the row prior to planting. Grain was harvested September 17 and
dried to 12% moisture before weighing. Precipitation at AREC, Jay is shown in
Table 9.
Yields were excellent for most cultivars with a test average of 8,410 lbs/A
grain. The lowest yield in the test was 6,050 lbs/A grain. Rainfall was more than
adequate and fairly evenly distributed and allowed the grain sorghum plants to
produce an excellent yield. There were 22.3 inches of rainfall (Table 9) from
June 1 through August 31. The 43-year average for this time period at AREC, Jay
is 21.75 inches. Leaf diseases (primarily anthracnos., .Colletotrichum graminicola),
was moderate. More leaf disease symptoms were evident than in 1990; probably
because of the later (June) planting date. The grain sorghum cultivars were
planted at the usual time (April 29-30) in 1991, but heavy rainfall prevented
stand establishment. Consequently, the test was replanted June 5 after heavy rains
had ceased.
Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table 10.
The highest yielding hybrid in the test was DeKalb X-174, an experimental hybrid,
with 11,130 lbs/A followed by DeKalb X-176, also an experimental hybrid, with
10,530 lbs/A and DeKalb X-866, another experimental hybrid, with 10,160 lbs/A
grain. Among the hybrids available for farmer planting, George Warner W-917-E was
highest in yield with 9,800 lbs/A grain. Seven other entries yielded more than
9,500 lbs/A. The mean yield for the test was 8,410 Ibs/A (about 150 bushels/A).
There was some bird depredation this year but very little or no lodging. Two-,
three-, four-, and five-year average yields of hybrids grown at AREC, Jay are
presented in Table 11. The highest yielding hybrids averaged over two years were
Hyperformer 1330DR and DeKalb DK-49; over three years was DeKalb X-866; over four
years was Jacques J-606E; and over five years was Jacques J-606E.
Grain Sorghum Marianna:
Two plantings of grain sorghum hybrids were made at AREC, Marianna in 1991.
- 2 -
The early planting of 60 hybrids was made April 16 and the late planting of the
same 60 hybrids was made July 10. Both plantings were irrigated. Fertilizer for
the early-planted test included 500 lbs/A 16-8-16 plus minor elements applied
April 23, 350 lbs/A 13-13-13 applied May 16, and 300 lbs/A ammonium nitrate
applied May 28. Fertilizer for the late-planted test included 350 lbs/A 16-8-16
applied July 24 and 300 lbs/A ammonium nitrate applied August 7. The early test
was harvested July 29 and 30 and the late test was harvested November 13.
Precipitation for AREC, Marianna is presented in Table 12. Data on yield and
other agronomic characteristics from the early and late plantings (April and
July) are presented in Tables 13 and 14. The highest yielding hybrid from the
early planting (Table 13) was Alabama Farmers Cooperative FFR-331 DR with 4,919
lbs/A grain followed by Northrup King Savanna 5 with 4,869 lbs/A. Mean yield for
the test was 4,070 lbs/A grain. The early planting had poor yields, compared
with yields from a normal year, primarily due to excessive rain and associated
disease problems.
The highest yielding hybrid from the late planting (Table 14) was DeKalb
X-176, an experimental hybrid, with 6,666 lbs/A followed by another experimental
hybrid, DeKalb X-977. The highest yielding hybrid available for farmer planting
was DeKalb DK-56. Mean yield for the test was 4,674 lbs/A grain. The late
planting (July) produced much better than normal but required seven irrigations.
Yields for the early (April) planting at AREC, Marianna in 1989, 1990, 1991,
and the three-year average yields are presented in Table 15. The highest yielding
hybrid averaged over three years was Northrup King Savanna 5 with 5,982 Ibs/A
followed by Alabama Farmers Cooperative FFR-331 DR with 5,829 lbs/A grain.
Yields for the late (July) planting at AREC, Marianna in 1989, 1990, 1991,
and the three-year averageyields are presented in Table 16. The highest yielding
hybrid averaged over three years was DeKalb DK-64 with 3,760 lbs/A followed by
DeKalb X-866 with 3,744 lbs/A grain.
The average of the grain sorghum hybrids grown at both Jay and Marianna are
presented in Table 17. The highest yielding hybrid from the average of the two
locations was DeKalb X-174 with 8,680 Ibs/A grain followed by DeKalb X-176. Both
of these are experimental hybrids. The highest yielding hybrid from the average
of the two locations which is available for farmer planting was DeKalb DK-56
with 8,080 lbs/A followed closely by Hyperformer HSC Wings with.7,600 lbs/A. The
overall mean yield for the two test locations was 6,540 Ibs/A grain.
