stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice
for all."

"FLORIDA, MY FLORIDA"

By Mrs. Phoeby Thompson

(Tune: "Maryland, My Maryland")
0 Lovely Land of palm and pine,
Florida, my Florida!
My loyal love is ever thine,
Florida, my Florida!
I see the sparkling rivers flow,
The orange blooms of scented snow,
For me, thy perfumed breezes blow,
Florida, my Florida!

The mocking birds that greet each day.
Florida, my Florida!
In happy tuneful chorus say,
Florida, my Florida!
All white and gold the lilies sway
Where crystal waters dimpling play,
To thee my longing fancies stray-
Florida, my Florida!

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

Collect of Club Women of America

Keep us, 0 God, from pettiness; let us
be large in thought, in word, in deed.
Let us be done with fault-finding and
leave off self-seeking.

May we put away all pretense and meet
each other face to face without self-
pity, and without prejudice.
May we never be hasty in judgment and
always generous.

Teach us to put into action our better
impulses, straightforward and un-
afraid.

Let us take time for all things; make
us grow calm, serene and gentle.
Grant that we may realize it is the little
things that create differences; that in
the big things of life we are as one.

And may we strive to touch and to know
the great common woman's heart of
us all;
And, 0 Lord God, let us not forget to
be kind.
-Mary Stuart

44 THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

Report of the President
1938-1939

MY FRIENDS AND FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS:
A great privilege has been mine to compile for you the reports of this great
Club and as I bring to you this the third and last as President, I realize that
your accomplishments read somewhat like fiction. They are altogether beautiful
like a finely woven tapestry spread out over the whole community showing your
handiwork which has been fringed with sacrifice and long hours of voluntary
service. The pattern you chose was of wonderful design and has been beauti-
fully executed. The love which has been molded into it shows forth the highlights
which stand like towers or monuments to this organization.
It is, therefore, a stupendous task, in this brief space, to choose from the
many activities and accomplishments, a few of the highlights of this club year
that might be of potent historical significance and value to those that follow.
However, the facts given are in the opinion of your President well worthy of
attention and space. Time alone can tell how wise has been the choice.
You are to be sincerely congratulated in the choice of those members serv-
ing with the President on the Board of Directors. The conscientious and business
like manner in which they made plans for the year, some of which appeared
almost too colossal to achieve. Nevertheless, they planned with the realization
that the Club could not get any where or gain any objectives until there was
a knowledge of exactly the things wanted and needed. Then the way ahead has
been the way of all those who have achieved, through cooperation and team work
of the entire membership in carrying out the planned program.
We adopted as our theme "Thoughtful Citizens in Action" as chosen by
the Florida Federation. You have truly exemplified in your activities the pur-
poses of this theme-careful thought and splendid action.
The Departments have been especially diligent as will be shown through
the Secretary's annual report which report is also published.
For the first time in the history of this club building, every part of it has
been in constant use during the past year. With The Flagler Memorial Library
located on the first and second floors, and having approximately 10,000 borrow-
ers, Club rooms on the second and third floors with a membership including the
Junior Club of approximately four hundred, The Miami Conservatory on the
first, third and fourth floors, with more than one hundred twenty-five regular
students, the Miami Federal Galleries on the fourth and fifth floors with the
years list of visitors more than twenty thousand, with the many additional
functions including, lectures, concerts, recitals, exhibits, entertainments, classes,
programs, educational and religious events, we have estimated that approximately
one-hundred-twenty-five-thousand people have visited the building since last May
Breakfast. Truly our club home has become a cultural center for the community.
The Board of County Commissioners appropriated $1,500 this year to the
Club for Flagler Memorial Library, a portion of which has been used to increase
the service at the Little River Branch. The circulation for the year has been
more than 126,000 volumes.

On November 15th, 1938, the Miami Public Library moved to the third floor
of the American Bank Building, (139 N. E. First Street). It has been operated
on a budget of $12,000 for the fiscal year. There is a total of 10,636 books on
the shelves, more than 8,000 borrowers, with a circulation for the year of approx-
imately 107,500. These figures include the Dunbar Branch Library (negro).

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB 45

From the proceeds of the club's Flower Sale days of the past two years, we
purchased an Infant Respirator (iron lung) at a cost of $495 and presented it
to the James M. Jackson Memorial Hospital for The Miami Woman's Club
Nursery.
In the will of the late Sophie J. Oehler, a sum of $',544.25 was left to our
member, Mrs. Mollie Garnet Freyer to use for her blind friends. She gave it
through the club to the Miami Lighthouse and we have been advised that it
will be used to build a home for the blind.
Two girls on our scholarship loan fund are graduating this year from the
University of Miami.
We held our second annual University of Miami Day at the Club in Decem-
ber with Dr. Bowman F. Ashe, President, special guest and speaker.
On July 28th, 1938, the City of Miami and Club's Birthday was again cele-
brated with a banquet and a gay nineties party. Judge Raleigh W. Petteway
was the guest speaker.
At the Club's eleventh annual art luncheon and exhibit, we awarded a gold
medal to Jesse Whitset, on his oil painting, "The New River." It was judged the
best Florida picture on exhibit in any medium.
Katherine Merrill of Sarasota won our medal for the best Florida oil paint-
ing at the Florida Federation of Arts Convention at West Palm Beach last
December.

We have sponsored with the Miami Federal Galleries during the last year,
three outstanding exhibits of international artists, Mihron K. Serailian and Odon
Hullenkremer, oil paintings and the water colors of Jahn Porel.

The Club's Art Pilgrimage of last year to Jamaica brought a return visit
from the Jamaica Woman's Club to us, in March of this year, when they were
entertained at luncheon in our building.

Our activities on behalf of the citizenship training classes for foreign born
have been continued. We used our influence toward reorganization of the Com-
munity Chest, assisted in the campaign, and made a cash contribution.

On April 4th, we opened for the second successive year, the community's
Pan American Celebration with a luncheon and exhibit. The guest speaker on
the program was the Honorable William A. Reid, of Washington, D. C. who for
25 years has been Foreign Trade Adviser for the Pan American Union. Mr.
Reid came from Washington especially for our program, a part of which was
broadcast from the Club through the courtesy of the Miami Broadcasting Com-
pany, Station WQAM. The Pan American exhibit, which was made possible
through the cooperation of the various consuls stationed in Miami, interested
groups and individuals, was much larger and attracted even greater attention
than that of the previous year. The program, the broadcast, the exhibit, together
with the coats of arms and flags of the Pan American Republics, made a festive
exposition.
Thirty-eight medals were awarded in the music appreciation, speech, and
creative writing contests conducted in the Miami Public schools. In the art con-
test, the winning students received ribbon badges of honor and a set of the coats
of arms of the twenty-one Pan American Countries was provided as a loan
traveling collection to the schools participating.

Regular classes have been conducted for the membership in Spanish, Par-
liamentary Law, dancing and metal craft.

46 THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

The Club has been entertained on several occasions with plays produced in
the Club's Drama Workshop and music rendered by The Miami Woman's Club
Chorus.
A series of twenty music appreciation lectures open to club members was
given in the auditorium by Edward Clarke of the University of Miami, School
of Music.
No civic organization would put financial attainment first without showing
itself weak, we only think of it as a means to an end in greater usefulness
through our building to the community as a cultural center.
In thinking of our financial progress for the past year, we are reminded
of the many important highlights in the material structure during the life of the
organization, chief of which was the first great gift of Henry M. Flagler whom
we revere and pay tribute. Then, years later, when the $100,000 mortgage became
a fact, the wonderful generosity of Mrs. Olaf Zetterlund in the cancellation of
$50,000 from that sum of indebtedness. And again, the continuous voluntary
service of our friend, Mr. William Mark Brown, who worked out the details of
the Bond Issue together with the facts pertinent to it as recorded in the minutes
of this organization. As we pause to review these fact, we acknowledge a debt
of gratitude.
The Club is to be sincerely congratulated on the wonderful progress made
and the payment of the last $10,000 of this $50,000 bond indebtedness by Janu-
ary 1st, 1939. The mortgage on the building was burned with fitting ceremony
at the Annual Banquet on January 24th.
It is indeed gratifying to report that during this administration when you
paid off an approximate fifty percent of the total actual indebtedness paid on
the building, that the Club won the first award in the State for the past two
successive years, being judged the highest rated Club in the Florida Federation
from the standpoint of varied activities, accomplishments, community service,
and cooperation with the State and General Federation.
The budget set up by the Board of Directors for the General and Bond Ac-
counts to meet the necessary expenses and objectives of the year was $20,000.
The aims set forth have been accomplished with no unpaid bills and leaving more
than $1,600 in the General Account.
From the Special Civic Fund of the Club, a small portion has been used in
purchasing medals for the Public School and art contests, the traveling collec-
tion of pictures and books for the Public Schools, and the picture molding placed
on the fourth and fifth floor walls for use by the Miami Federal Galleries and
other exhibitors.
As an investment, two double indemnity 15-Year endowment life insurance
policies of $1,000 each have been written with the New York Life Insurance Com-
pany on two of the Club's members. These policies are payable to the Club only,
and of course, were written anticipating the future growth and needs of the
organization.
Through our sponsorship with the City of the Miami Federal Galleries and
because of the fact the Club gives space in its building to this activity of the
Federal Art Project, we were able to get W. P. A. labor for redecorating the
first floor foyer, the third floor club rooms and the fourth and fifth floors. We
provided the materials used at an approximate cost of $500.
During the past year, the club was a beneficiary together with the widow,
in the final settlement by court order, of the estate of the late Lee Chandler Per-
sons. $8,000 came to the club and by this probate order, all parties concerned
were released of all obligations as to the use of the funds both to the estate
and the court.

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

After a careful survey and study as to the greatest need of the Club, the
Board of Directors voted to use this sum to build a seawall of 170 feet on the
east side of the Club's property which included 20 feet on the North East corner
and to continue the same type of permanent foundation on the remaining North
side of the property. The old sea wall on the North side had a seepage under-
neath which at any time might have destroyed the wall and which facts also
were seriously endangering the foundation of the building. This sea wall work has
been completed at a cost of about $8,200.

Following the completion of the seawall work, several members and friends
have given coconut palm trees and the Park Department of the city has planted
them.
We may have the feeling that our house, so to speak, is quite in order, now
that our mortgage is paid. Please bear in mind that the upkeep of our property
is a great responsibility and especially when we think of the use that is made
of it by the public. But, on the other hand, we could not be of so much service
and value to the community, without this splendid building.
As we close another year and end an administration, we are reminded of the
many courtesies extended and in your behalf, I wish to express our sincere ap-
preciation to the Board of County Commissioners, the City of Miami, Chamber
of Commerce, the Miami Herald, the Miami Daily News, radio stations WQAM,
WIOD, and WKAT, University of Miami, Miami Conservatory, Public Schools
of Dade County, many musicians and speakers, many merchants and business
firms, other civic organization, and all those who have made it possible through
their cooperation for us to carry out our program.
Many gifts have been received from individual members and committees
throughout the year and we do express our sincere appreciation for all of them.
They, of course, will be listed separately in the year book.
It was a gracious and lovely gesture and one that I deeply appreciate to
have the bronze marker in my honor which has been placed on the door of the
President's Room. This room which I had the privilege and pleasure of redecor-
ating for the purpose of a President's Room.
As your President, my days have been filled in your behalf, with many Fed-
eration Meetings, many civic and social events, as well as speaking engagements
before various groups and over the radio on matters of civic interest. This list,
should I attempt to enumerate them would completely fill the pages of your
year book. The esteem in which our organization is held has been manifest in
all places I have been, and it has been a pleasure to greet the men and women
who occupy important places in many walks of life, I have found that our club
occupies an enviable position and is looked to for unfailing support- to the com-
munity's needs and best interest.
It was my privilege to gain new inspiration, when I represented the Florida
Federation at a State Chamber of Commerce Meeting, and the New York Herald-
Tribune Forum on Public Affairs.

Through the request of Mrs. Sadie Orr Dunbar, I attended the Annual Con-
ference of the National Rehabilitation Association and by appointment from her
as General Federation Zone 7 Chairman of Indian Welfare, attended the Board
Meeting of the General Federation in Washington in January. It was, indeed,
a wonderful experience to be associated with the fine women on the General
Federation Board, representing the largest group of organized women in the
world. It gave me a much broader vision of club work in all of its many phases.
It has, indeed, been a most happy time, overflowing with joy these three
years I have spent in planning and serving with you. After all is said and done,

48 THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

there is nothing so thrilling and enlivening as activity-doing a job and then
passing on to the next one. It has not all been easy, but I liked that about it
for it brought forth powers to exercise initiative which made victories sweeter.
I have come to realize more forcefully that lessons out of the book of life are
the ones that give to all knowledge its foundation.
Again, I say to you, that it has been a great privilege and opportunity given
me, for which I shall ever be grateful. Small courtesies sweeten life, great ones
ennoble it you have surely added both to my life.
I commend you, again, for united effort and great progress. Many lives
have been enriched by it. Now,we look toward another administration with its
opportunities and pledge our loyal participation. As we close this year's activi-
ties, I feel that we can say together:
"Second to none, in name we stand,
Shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand,
Banded together for common good
In unity, love and sisterhood."
Faithfully,
KATHRYN SLAUGHTER WITTICHEN

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

Report of the Recording Secretary
1938 -1939

The past year has been notable for its exceptional accomplishments, achieved
by loyal executives and club members. Splendid interest and a spirit of unity
of purpose has been exemplified through the increased excellent attendance at
all meetings throughout the club year. "Thoughtful Citizens in Action" was a
well chosen theme from the standpoint of activity in our building, when during
the year approximately one-hundred-twenty-five-thousand persons entered its
portals to visit library, gallery, club and various other cultural affairs.
Our President, Mrs. M. F. Wittichen, with her charming personality, high
ideals, and keen executive ability, has given the club a distinguished leadership
that has marked unprecedented progress. We fully realize and appreciate that
much of the advancement of the club during the past three years has been due
to her faithful and untiring efforts. To list her activities would overflow these
pages and mere words are inadequate to tell the high esteem with which she is
held not only by club members but by leaders in the community and by both
the State and General Federation of Women's Clubs. She is now serving a two
year term as Recording Secretary of the Florida Federation and a three year
term as Chairman, Zone 7, Division of Indian Welfare of the General Federa-
tion. The influence of her great service and outstanding accomplishments will be
far reaching throughout the life of the club and will continue to be felt in the
community and wherever her activities have been extended.
A bronze marker, honoring our beloved president, Mrs. Wittichen, has been
placed on the door of the President's Room in appreciation of her many contri-
butions and especially for her generosity in redecorating and furnishing this
room.
Mrs. E. D. Pearce, First Vice-President, has co-operated with the President
and fulfilled the duties of her office most admirably. As chairman of the Mem-
bership Extension Committee, sixty new members are reported, a reception in
their honor being given by the club in April. Mrs. Pearce edited the three issues
of "The Miami Woman's Club Bulletin" which were mailed out to the member-
ship. These Bulletins were of great interest, as well as informative, concern-
ing the club's activities and that of its members. She had charge of the "Open
House" for members and friends in January and of the Forum Luncheon in
March presenting a program on "Religious Crisis". Mrs. Pearce and those serv-
ing with her on the Membership Committee. gave a banquet table to the club.
Mrs. Alexander Orr, Jr., Second Vice-President, and chairman of Hospitality,
with the committees for the months, took charge of the decorations for all regular
meetings, received the members and guests and extended a cordial greeting
throughout the tea hour. The hospitable spirit of the club was reflected. One-
hundred-thirty-five dollars was cleared from the committees' bridge party. They
made a gift of six banquet tables and contributed ninety-three dollars toward the
amount spent for hospitality by the club during the year. In her capacity as sec-
ond Vice-President, Mrs. Orr has represented the President and the Club on
several occasions.
Mrs. William A. Cann, Recording Secretary, has carried out faithfully the
duties of her office. As chairman of the Year Book, she found an old copy of a
picture of the temporary clubhouse in Dallas Park and incorporated it in the
book. She has done work on various committees including the Elections Commit-
tee and served as general chairman of entertainment for the Finance Bridge
Party. Serving as page to the President for the Annual Banquet and Pan Amer-
ican Luncheon was a pleasure and privilege. Mrs. Cann has typed and pasted
in a permanent record book all minutes of club meetings for the year.

50 THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

Mrs. Charles Bily, Corresponding Secretary, has written a total of 274
letters and attended all Board and Regular Club Meetings when in the city. She
has served on various special committees including the Departments' Bridge
party. She has notified Board members of special meetings and made many
other telephone calls during the year. Mrs. Bily and Mrs. P. G. Pemberton gave
a glass top for the table in the third floor foyer.

The Financial Secretary, Mrs. P. G. Pemberton, reports 279 active members,
24 life members, 2 associate members, 6 honorary members and 12 season guests.
Three members have been taken by death and six have been lost by resignation
during the year. A total of 835 pieces of mail have gone out from this office
which included letters of welcome to the new members, membership cards, no-
tices of dues, ballots, and year books to those, not having received them at club
meetings.

This work alone required a great amount of time and efficiency on the part
of this officer as well as the fact that she receives all monies coming into the
club and keeps a book record before handing to the treasurer. Her many duties
require great detail and extreme care as to correctness through which facts she
has been of invaluable service to the club.

Mrs. Pemberton served as Chairman of the Special Public School Contest
Committee, working with the schools in conducting contests in art, speech, cre-
ative writing, and music appreciation. This committee arranged the program
on May 2nd at the club, when winners in the several contests received the 38
medals awarded. Announcement was made of the loan collection of coats of arms
of the Pan American Countries made available by the club to the schools, es-
pecially for the art and history departments. The auditorium was filled for the
occasion with club members, school students, parents and teachers.

Miss Catherine S. Walsh, Treasurer, with her particular regard for accuracy,
handled the details surrounding our financial accomplishments during the past
year in a splendid manner. Her annual report is given on another page.

Mrs. William Mark Brown, Auditor, reports, "Out of debt and money in the
Bank", as well as all accounts correct. In the capacity of club chairman of the
GFWC Magazine, thirty subscriptions have been sent in. This was the largest
number of subscriptions secured by any club in the state. Mrs. Brown has given
beautiful expressions of tribute to deceased members and friends of the club at
various regular meetings.
The Director of Library, Mrs. F. N. Chaplin and her committee presented
the program for Library Day, which was held in January, the birth month of
Henry M. Flagler. The Miami Public Library moved to new quarters in the Amer-
ican Bank and Trust Building on November 15, 1938 and the following January
26th celebrated its second anniversary with a reception. There has been an in-
crease in circulation during the year of 49,229 volumes in the Flagler Memorial
and Miami Public Libraries, including Little River and Dunbar branches. The
gift list to all libraries include approximately 1,500 volumes. Mrs. Chaplin spoke
over radio station WQAM in February on the city problem program, discussing
Miami's library problems.
Director of Finance, Mrs. Fred W. Hosea, and her committee have been ex-
tremely ambitious and imbued with the spirit of conquest. Through advertise-
ments in the year book and two bridge parties, $1,911.20 has been added to the
club's treasury. Mrs. Hosea, as chairman of budget, states that during the first
year of this administration the budget figure was $16,000, the second year $18,000
and the past year $20,000. The Board of Directors have strictly adhered to the
budget estimate which they adopted. Appreciation is expressed to Mrs. Wittichen,

Katharine Merrill of Sarasota and was presented to her by our President, Mrs.
M. F. Wittichen. An arts and craft exhibit was held by this committee during
National Art Week, the club winning special recognition from the American
Professional Art League. The Christmas program as usual was presented by
this Department for which they had arranged Bible stories and Christmas carols.
Mrs. Dooley and the members of this committee made a gift of two banquet ta-
bles to the club.
The Chariman of Program, Mrs. W. A. Haggard states that the club theme
has been emphasized in various subjects through all club programs during the
year. From the materials presented by the Department and Special Committee
chairmen, a program outline was prepared and printed in the year book in
accordance with the custom of the club. The program committee arranged and
presented a "Peace Program" in December and assisted with the following other
outstanding events: Annual Banquet, Visiting Club Woman's Day, Jamaica
Woman's Club Luncheon, Pan American Luncheon, and the May Breakfast. Pos-
ters announcing all Programs and events have been placed on the bulletin board
in the club foyer each week. The very large attendance at all meetings has
proven the great interest in the numerous varied programs of the year. Mrs.
Haggard and committee made a gift of a banquet table to the club.
The Press Chairman, Mrs. W. Sanders Gramling, reports 4,588 inches of
publicity used by local newspapers, with sixteen photographs appearing in the
Miami Herald, and thirty-three in the Miami Daily News. We were given four-
teen headlines in the News and ten lead lines in Miss Pauline Corley's column in
the Miami Herald. Our two former club houses, present club house, the interiors
of; The Flagler Memorial Library, auditorium, banquet hall and fifth floor show-
ing the Miami Federal galleries, have been pictured. The complete history of
our club was published in both newspapers. The Florida Club Woman and The
General Federation Magazine carried pictures and articles on the burning of
the club's mortgage. The Pan American Bulletin carried a story about the Pan
American Luncheon and Exhibit. The cooperative spirit which has existed
throughout the year between the newspapers and Mrs. Gramling shows conclu-
sively her ability as publicity chairman. She, likewise, had the co-operation of
all committees in the club and her efforts and accomplishments have been sin-
cerely appreciated.

The newspaper clippings showing the splendid publicity received during the
year have been carefully assembled by Mrs. W. H. Gregg into a scrap book. The
artistic arrangement of its many pages will furnish future historians and others
detailed information concerning the club's many activities during the year
1938-1939.
Mrs. R. Stearns Hicks, Hospital Chairman, and the members of her com-
mittee conducted a "Flower Day" on January 28th, for the purpose of purchas-
ing a respirator for the Jackson Memorial Hospital. This request came from
the Hospital after the respirator given two years ago proved so satisfactory and
had resulting in saving a number of lives. The latest type of respirator was pur-
chased which cost $495, and was presented as a gift to the Hospital.

Custodian of Records, Mrs. H. T. Hattersley. Terminating the year's work
with regret, Mrs. Hattersley relinquishes the task of keeping our records in
order, which she has done splendidly.
International Relations Chairman, Mrs. J. K. Tilton. Illness in her family
has prevented Mrs. Tilton from participating in club affairs to a great extent,
however, she was able to assist at the Pan American luncheon, which was one
of the outstanding events of the year.
Custodian of Flags, Mrs. Henry J. Egger. In her report, Mrs. Egger cautions

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

that no other flag or pennant should be placed above or if on the same level, to
the right of the Flag of the United States of America. The flag has been dis-
played on special historic days and the pledge of allegiance given at regular club
meetings. The chairman entertained a group of children in the Flagler Memorial
Library with the story of "Our Flag". Mrs. Egger presented the club with a
silk hand painted flag of the state of Florida. She acted as chairman of the
Elections Committee, worked on the Hospital Committee, and gave a collection
of books to the library.
Through the introduction of members at various club meetings, by the
Chairman of States, Mrs. Charles H. Anderson, we have come to know each other
better as well as to know our states better. She has given members birthplace,
the state flower, state song and other interesting facts. The birthplaces of club
members represent seven foreign countries and thirty-eight states. Mrs. Ander-
son says "The widespread influence of the Miami Woman's Club is bounded only,
By the enterprise of the North, The culture of the East, The vision of the West,
And the hospitality of the South." She presented the club with a very valuable
and interesting book, "State Names, Flags, Birds, Flowers and Other Symbols."
Five Forum Luncheons were held on the first Tuesday of each month, be-
ginning with November. Chairmen, other than the ones already mentioned were,
Mrs. Harriet Sharman, who conducted the first forum, using the year's Theme,
"Thoughtful Citizens in Action". Mrs. Robert Clay Sherrill presented Mr. Ellis
Hollums, Executive Editor of the Miami Herald, in "Miami of Tomorrow" at the
March meeting.
The Forum Luncheon Hospitality Chairman, Mrs. Frank Price-Williams,
and committee were responsible for the decorations and many unique ideas were
effectively carried out for these meetings. This committee also had charge of
and created a beautiful effect at the Pan American Luncheon when fruits and
flowers typical of South America were used on the tables. Flags of the twenty-
one Pan American Countries hung from the balcony and the coast of arms of
these Republics were displayed on the walls. The history of the United States
Flag was told in the row of flags that stood behind the speakers table where the
assemblage of consuls and distinguished guests were seated.
The Pan American Luncheon was not only colorful and impressive but
altogether a very important event of the club year. Our President introduced
Mayor E. G. Sewell who presented the guest speaker of Washington, D. C., Mr.
William A. Reid, foreign trade advisor for the Pan American Union whose ad-
dress was broadcast over radio station WQAM.
Many pleasant recollections of the Annual Banquet will remain long in the
memory of members and friends for it was on this occasion that the Club's
mortgage was burned. Every member and guest present participated in the
ceremony each having a candle, the light passing from one to the other until
all candles were lighted. It was, indeed, a thrilling moment when from the Pres-
ident's candle the mortgage burst in flame and the many voices in the audience
spontaneously sang "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah." A detailed account of the pro-
gram may be found in the minutes.
In closing this year's report, I realize what a year of work and achievement
it has been and I am proud to have been a member of the Board of Directors.
It has been a genuine pleasure to have served the Club and its President, Mrs.
Wittichen.
"For the structures that we raise
Time is with materials filled;
Our today's and yesterdays
Are the blocks with which we build."
MARGARET N. CANN, Recording Secretary.

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

Condensed Sketch of Growth of The Miami Woman's Club

1900-1927

By MRS. KATE APLINGTON
Let no one be afraid to begin any good movement in a quiet, unpretentious
way. If it is truly a good thing, it will grow, and keep on growing!
So the Woman's Club and the Library had their beginning on a" Summer's
day when two friends visiting together on a shady verandah, decided to ask
just a few of their friends to form a club, for mutual improvement and pleasure;
using their ten-cent weekly dues to purchase books for the use of the little circle.
Three years later the organization had accumulated a library of nearly a
thousand volumes, and had united itself with the State Federation of Women's
Clubs. A Library must necessarily have a home, and the Club members were
already beginning to plan to secure a real Club home.
In 1912, Henry M. Flagler, gave them a lot on the corner of what is now
Flagler Street and Second Avenue; and, through the faithful efforts of the Club
members, $13,000 was raised to erect the necessary building within the short
specified time. Two years later in 1914 it was found that the Club and the
Library were already outgrowing their beautiful little building, of which they
had been so proud. The whole form and purpose of the organization had been
undergoing great change. Instead of developing along its first super-excellent
literary lines, it was earnestly entering upon a much-needed civic work; trees
for schoolhouse yards-Travelers' Aid Matrons at the railroad station-special
work for tuberculosis releif City Curb Market Canning Club, Domestic
Science Classes-Better Babies Contests, and, in World War times, the making
of hospital supplies for the Allies.
From the time that the Clubhouse was opened it generously gave the use of
its auditorium freely for Annual School Exhibits; for Y. M. C. A. and Y. W.
C. A., and Chamber of Commerce campaigns, and for four months during the
Summer of 1917, the Club gave the full and free use of all the space not abso-
lutely required for Library purposes for the use of the soldiers and sailors quar-
tered near the city, the Club itself holding its meetings in different church build-
ings.
Most generously it gave of its strength to the City of Miami; and the city
was not unmindful of the favors it had so long been receiving from the Club.
The city officials had always taken the greatest pride in the city schools. They
had built many beautiful school buildings,, and equipped them well, but they
had never found the right time for establishing of that other necessary edu-
cational institution-a City Library! But, in 1914, the Library Committee of
the Club induced the City to give some small sum annually to assist in the main-
tenance of the Club Library; beginning with $300 yearly, but increasing the
amount with every passing year. The Library was making a splendid record;
though registered as a "privately owned library," it ranked third in the state
for the number of books upon its shelves and FIRST for proportional circula-
tion; and, in 1924, the city agreed to pay all the expenses for its maintenance
and operation, on the condition that it be made a FREE Public Library, which is
its present status.
In 1920, when the officials of the Model Land Company-representing the
interests of the Henry M. Flagler Estate in Mami-were visiting the city, it
was proved to them that the building, standing as it did on one of the busiest
and most conveniently situated congested corners of the city, was most incon-
veniently situated for a public library, and, later, they were induced to allow
the building and site to be sold, the condition being agreed to that the new

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB 69

building should be perpetually maintained as a memorial to Henry M. Flagler
and given the name "The Flagler Memorial Library and Women's Club House."
The new building was completed and dedicated on the evening of December
14, 1926, with most impressive ceremonies. It stands in the center of a large
tract of land on the shore line of beautiful Biscayne Bay and Seventeenth Ter-
race, only four blocks from one of the main lines of the city street railway,
and it is thus reasonably accessible to all the citizens. Yet the members of the
Woman's Club are not entirely satisfied with conditions as they are for the
Library. The city is too large and too scattered to be served from any one sta-
tion. As all great cities have established "Branch Libraries" in various sections,
so must Miami expect to do. Eventually the city will doubtless have a large Cen-
tral Library,, with branches in the Southwest and Northwest-with the Flagler
Memorial Library still serving the Northeast part of the town. This is the end
toward which the present Library Committee and the Woman's Club are now
working.
1927-1934

By MRS. GERTRUDE G. JARRETT
A very important achievement of the Club was the organization, July 22,
1927, of the Junior Department. This has proved to be a successful and inspiring
department of the Club, and takes a prominent part in the accomplishment of
many worth while projects.
The Club takes pride in the scholarships given each year to Miami girls.
We now sponsor four in the University of Miami.
In 1928 a novel social function was inaugurated. Each year the Club gives
a dinner known as the "Pioneer Dinner," to which all pioneers of the city are
invited. This has developed into a very popular occasion, renewing friendships
of many years.
This event brings to mind the days of the Royal Palm Hotel, which was the
scene of many social functions in the early history of Miami, and where the
annual banquet of the Miami Woman's Club was always held until we occupied
the building that is now our home.
The Club has always taken an active part in civic affairs. The past three
years the "City's Birthday Luncheon" has been held in the Miami Woman's
Club, all city officials and civic organizations being represented.

1934-1935

An accomplishment of the past year was the cancellation of the Zetterlund
mortgage. This indebtedness on the Club building, through the generosity of
Mrs. Zetterlund and the work of the Club women, was greatly reduced, and in
January was refinanced through one of our Club members.
The Club membership was divided into twelve committees, each with an
efficient chairman, for the purpose of raising funds; this proved a successful
means of adding to the Club treasury. The Junior Woman's Club volunteered
to assist in this financial work as a thirteenth committee.
A Silver Service was purchased for the Club.
Past Presidents' pins were presented to the Past Presidents of the Club at
the "May Breakfast."
A Royal Poinciana tree, the gift of Mrs. Jarrett, a Past President, was
planted on the Club grounds in observance of Florida Outdoor Week.

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

An honor came to the Miami Woman's Club when, for the second time in
its history, a President of the State Federation was furnished from its mem-
bership-Mrs. A. E. Frederick, of beloved memory, serving as State President,
1910-1912; Mrs. T. V. Moore of the Miami Woman's Club, the present most
efficient State President of tht Florida Federation of Women's Clubs.

1935-1936

By MRS. J. I. CONKLIN

Again this year our educational and cultural activities have gone forward
with added interest and there has been an appreciable increase in both member-
ship, and attendance at the program meetings.
Finances seem always of paramount interest. If any one should be so in-
discreet as to suggest that women and women's organizations cannot manage
financial matters, cite to them the accomplishment of the Miami Woman's
Club. We not only reduced our indebtedness by over six thousand dollars this
year, but converted the entire remainder of our debt into bonds, bearing a
much lower rate of interest, which we feel confident we shall be able to retire
in a few years.
It has been our privilege to act as hostess to many distinguished women.
First always our own club member and past president, The Honorable Ruth
Bryan Owen, who is now Minister to Denmark and was home for a short va-
cation.
We also entertained the officers at the General Federated Council Meeting
for luncheon in April.
Mrs. T. V. Moore retired this spring from the state presidency, but the
Miami Woman's Club will still be represented on the board as Mrs. Johnson
Pace became State Treasurer and Mrs. Myrtle Taylor Bradford continues Chair-
man of Art and has not only been efficient, but extraordinarily active in the
Art program throughout the State.
The work done for and with our Florida Indians by Mrs. M. F. Wittichen,
State Chairman of Indian Welfare, has been praiseworthy and we trust of far
reaching benefit.
With such a record of accomplishment for the past year, and with such an
organization efficient, trained, and eager, we look forward to great results in
the next year's work.

1936-1937

In Club activities, much accomplished is of such nature that it cannot be
put into reports. Lives have been made richer by the association and work
together. Talents have been developed by faithful performance of the duties
assigned and the community has been benefited by the wholesome influence
emanating from this large group of clear thinking, high minded women.
One of the most important activities during the past year was the request
to the City Commissioners for an appropriation for a down town library. An
appropriation was made and the Club assisted the City to organize and operate
the Miami Public Library, which was opened January 26, 1937.
The Club promoted the first observance of National Education Week in No-
vember, 1936.

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB 71

From the Special Civic Fund, contests in Speech, Music Appreciation, Cre-
ative Writing, and Art, have been conducted in the Public Schools of Miami.
Forty-four gold medals were awarded and a collection of six pictures secured
for a traveling exhibit to the various schools.
The Miami Conservatory established a branch in our building April 1st,
1937. A chorus was organized in the Club with Miss Bertha Foster, head of the
Conservatory directing.
So, it has been through this and other years, our Woman's Club not only
has its own magnificent projects but supports and sponsors worthy activities
beneficial to our community.
1937-1938

On July 1, 1937, the Club gave space to be used by the Miami Federal Gal-
leries. It is gratifying to note the interest in art shown by the more than twelve
thousand patrons, who viewed the exhibits before the close of the Club year.
A library for negroes, which is being tremendously appreciated, was opened
on March 14, 1937.
The Art pilgrimage to Jamaica was the third successful voyage to a foreign
port, sponsored by the Club.
Our Club led the clubs of the State, winning first prize on our publicity scrap
book, and also first prize on being judged the best in organization, community
service, and cooperation with the Federations.
Our President, Mrs. M. F. Wittichen was elected Recording Secretary and
Mrs. Johnson Pace elected Auditor of the Florida Federation at their annual
meeting in March, 1938.
The original bronze memorial tablet to Henry M. Flagler, which was placed
on the Club's first building on November 12th, 1920, was placed, with impressive
ceremony on our present home on May 10th, 1938.
The Charter and By-Laws were changed to meet the need of our growing
organization. Four of the officers are to be elected on alternating years with the
other four, and the term of office lengthened. Our President, Mrs. Wittichen
and Vice-President, Mrs. E. D. Pearce, are to hold their offices for another year.
This, with all the other happy circumstances, makes us feel we are entering the
very best year in our Club's history.
1938-1939
By MRS. LON WORTH CROW
As one pauses to record briefly the history for the Club year 1938-1939, it is
evident that the best thought and effort of the membership have been pooled to
reach the present degree of power and excellence, that could have been obtained
in no other way.
With the capable leadership of our President, Mrs. Murray Forbes Wittichen,
whose unusual business ability and great desire to see our Club home free of
indebtedness, it has been possible to make the largest payment on our mortgage
that has been made in any one year. This financial accomplishment has required
the constant and diligent cooperation on the part of all. At the same time, it is
indeed a significant fact that the cultural, educational and civic activities have
progressed in like measure, to broader and more varied fields of endeavor.
For the second successive year we were judged the highest rated club in
the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs, based on varied activities, accomplish-

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

ments, community service, and cooperation with the State and General Federa-
tion.

During the past three years the Club has conducted contests in Miami Pub-
lic Schools, in Art, Speech, Creative Writing and Music Appreciation. Thirty-
eight medals were awarded on the evening of May 2nd, 1939 before an audience
that filled the club Auditorium and Lounge for the occasion. A set of Coats of
Arms of the twenty-one Pan American countries was established as a travelling
collection for the participating schools.
The Library contribution to the community through the Flagler Memorial
Library with the Little River Branch and the Miami Public Library with the
Dunbar Branch includes more than 20,000 borrowers with an increase in circu-
lation of 49,229.
The Club continues to sponsor, with the City of Miami, The Miami Federal
Galleries, which occupy exhibition and office space in our Club building. Through
their reported activities to the W.P.A. State Art Project, they were awarded
first place. This no doubt will mean that the government will place a higher
monetary value on our contribution to the community in the interest of art.
The extended scope of The Miami Woman's Club activities through its com-
munity service can be better understood when we realize that 125,000 people
visited our building during the past fiscal year.

In 1937 the Club gave to James M. Jackson Memorial Hospital an infant
respirator which proved so beneficial in saving the lives of infants that a request
came for a second one. In April 1939 the Club gave to the hospital the second
respirator at a cost of $495.00.

Our Club has been honored by the G.F.W.C. through the appointment of
Mrs. T. V. Moore, Chairman, Committee on Public Safety, and Mrs. M. F. Witti-
chen, Chairman, Zone Seven, Division of Indian Welfare, both to serve for the
Administration period 1938-1941.

The Miami Woman's Club being situated at the gateway to the West Indies
and South America, has held international art exhibits for eleven years. Follow-
ing the exhibits, for the past four years, the selected best pictures have been
taken on a tour to some foreign port, one of which was Jamaica. In March of
this year the Jamaica Woman's Club and Kingston, Jamaica City officials re-
turned the visit of the Miami Woman's Club of last year, bringing with them
for display, many of the art achievements of the Island.

The Pan-American luncheon on April 4th, which opened a ten day exhibit
and community observance, was a far reaching and most important feature of
the year. William A. Reid, who for twenty-five years has been Foreign Trade
Adviser for the Pan-American Union, came from Washington to give the address
on "Radical Changes in Inter-American Relations" which was broadcast from
the Club.

We had labored long and willingly, looking forward to the day when the
mortgage on our beautiful Club building might be burned. This great desire
became a reality at the Annual Banquet January 24, 1939 with a most impressive
ceremony. For each one in attendance there was a candle and the light passed
from one to the other. It was a triumphant moment when the light reached the
President's candle and she spoke, comparing the flame of the candles to the
enthusiasm that has passed from one to the other until we have reached this
happy moment.-"By virtue of the power vested in me as your President, I
hereby burn this mortgage" and as the crumpled paper burst into flame the

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB 73

Hallelujah Chorus was sung by the audience expressing the great rejoicing of
the large assemblage.
Perhaps the most outstanding social event of the club year was the beau-
tiful tea given by our president, Mrs. M. F. Wittichen on May 2nd, 1939, at the
close of a successful three years administration. It was given for members and
club friends in honor of those who had served on the Board of Directors.
A beautiful and friendly spirit permeated the club rooms on this delightful
occasion which was attended by more than five hundred guests who lingered long,
chatting together and discussing past accomplishments.
There are, in the many records of the Club, numerous details concerning
these and many other activities of the past year, from which we know that the
victory of achievement is ours.

Fold thy dear hands,
Angels are keeping watch o'er thee now;
See! It is dawning, light of the morning!!

Fall on thy brow.
White wings are flying,
No more shall dying darken thy day;
Leave thou death's portal, spirit immortal,
Speed on thy way.

Where skies are paling,
Where clouds are sailing over earth's night,
Only in dreaming, shalt thou be seeming
Lost to our sight.

DEAR CLUB MEMBERS:

I wish to express my appreciation for the co-operation that
you have given me, and in return I pledge my loyalty to you
by seeing the best in others and giving the best I have; by
living each day trying to accomplish something worthwhile,
not merely to exist. I ask your support in building a larger
and better club and trust I shall at all times have your advice,
sympathy and confidence.

Sincerely,

MARY WHITTEN BOATWRIGHT, President

98 THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

President's Report

1938-1939

In bringing to you the annual report as your President, I look back on a
full and happy year with members who have worked unselfishly. The splendid
co-operation of the officers and chairmen has been shown in their detailed re-
ports.
During the summer months a series of four bridge parties were held, and
plans were made at the Executive Board meetings for the year's Program.
We have continued our philanthropic work for the Day Nursery and increased
the amount of our donation to them. The Kindergarten classes have been con-
ducted faithfully and the annual Christmas and Easter parties were given by
the Public Welfare and Education departments. Money for this work was derived
from a benefit bridge party in November and a Silver Tea in February. Partici-
pation in the Needlework Guild program included collection of garments and
money for the benefit of the children of the Nursery.
A New project this year has been the contribution of a weekly allowance to
a worthy scholarship girl from Miami at Florida State College for Women.
Our interest in the children's department of the Flagler Memorial Library
was shown by a gift of twenty dollars during National Book Week.
We were placed on the honor roll for Score Sheet rating at the State Con-
vention and have contributed to every Federation project, as well as the Christ-
mas Seal Fund and the Everglades National Park Association.
We have become members of the Dade County Federation of Women's Clubs
and it has been a pleasure to represent you at these meetings and give the club
reports.
In co-operation with our Senior Club we assisted in securing advertisements
for the Year Book, and several members took part in their program at the annual
birthday party in July. On April 11th we had charge of their meeting and pre-
sented them with a check.
In November we were privileged to be hostesses to the Juniors of Sections
10 and 11 at the institute conducted by Miss Mary Stewart McLeod, State Chair-
man of Juniors.
Enjoyable social events included the Fall Reception, the Christmas Luncheon,
the Mother's Day Tea, and the May Breakfast.
The programs presented at our departmental and monthly meetings have
been varied and interesting as well as educational. I have attended each meeting
of the Fine Arts and American Home Departments and am sure that these meet-
ings have attained every purpose for which they were planned.
I have presided over every meeting of the Club and every Executive Board
meeting except one, when I was out of the city. The First. Vice-President, Mrs.
David Weaver, conducted this meeting most efficiently. I have attended six
Executive Board meetings of the Senior Club, and represented you at their May
Breakfast, Fall Reception, and Annual Birthday Party.
It was with pride that I attended the Sectional meeting and the State Con-
vention and presented your annual report.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have been your President and I
deeply appreciate your splendid loyalty. It is my sincere wish that your hearty
co-operation continue so that we may go forward to greater achievements.
Respectfully submitted,
MARGARET BOBBITT.

THE MIAMI WOMAN'S CLUB

Recording Secretary's Report
1938-1939

It is indeed a privilege to review the accomplishments and activities of the
officers and club members for the past year, although it is impossible to give
more than a concise summary of the many and varied club projects.
Our President, Mrs. C. Murray Bobbitt, has ably represented us at civic,
club and social functions and has given untiringly of her time and efforts. Her
detailed report is given elsewhere in this book.
Our first Vice-President, Mrs. David Weaver, has been ready to aid the
President whenever called upon. She very capably presided at one monthly board
meeting, during the absence of the President and attended a sectional meeting
of the Federation of Women's Clubs.
Our second Vice-President, Miss Helen Freeman, has had a very definite
responsibility and has responded diligently when called upon. She had charge
of securing the advertisements for the Junior division of the Year Book and
also the publicity for the Club. She compiled a scrap-book in which she posted
one hundred sixty pieces, including articles and pictures which appeared in the
daily papers.
The Recording Secretary, Miss Muriel Mahoney, has earnestly endeavored
to carry out all duties of this office. She has recorded the splendid work of this
club year and filed away the report.
Our Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. A. B. Scott, reports a total of 291 letters
of which 206 were invitations to club functions and 85 included letters of thanks
and appreciation for service rendered the club as well as business letters.
Mrs. J. Elsworth Davis, Financial Secretary, has been a dependable and
reliable secretary. She has issued 107 notices during the past year. She also
reports:
Honorary Members .------_____._---.............__ 7
New Members _______-------_ --- -.------- -- 12
Total Paid Members ....---...- .......--. -------------.. 71

It is with a feeling of regret that two of our valued members, Miss Frances
Mahoney, Treasurer and Mrs. Wilbur C. Curry, Auditor, are retiring from the
board of directors. Miss Mahoney has faithfully served for four years as club
treasurer while Mrs. Curry has given six years continuous service. Both are
splendid executives and have faithfully and efficiently carried on the responsi-
bilities of their respective offices. The Treasurer's Report follows:

new members. She has been ably assisted by her co-chairman, Mrs. Perry Mel-

As Second Director and chairman of the Visiting Committee, MRS. JACK

taken to nine new mothers also to other members of the club who were ill. Mrs.
Kenneth Robson, as her co-chairman assisted her very capably.

entire year.

and Means Committee, with the aid of her co-chairman, Mrs. Leonard M. Boat-
wright and her committee has concluded a very successful year. The Annual

efficiently carried on the social activities of the Club. Assisted by Mrs. Allan
Frisbee, her co-chairman and her standing committee, she had charge of the

outstanding social events of the year were: the delightful Fall Reception hon-
oring the President and other Officers at the home of Mrs. Paul F. Cater and the
Christmas Luncheon with its seasonal appointments. Conforming with our an-

March. The climaxing activity of the year was the tea at the home of Mrs. J.
Elswworth Davis honoring the Mothers of the Club Members. Mrs. Slater has
served on various committees and attended the Florida Federation of Women'
Clubs convention in Orlando.

MRS. JAMES D. WILLING, Chairman of the American Homes Department,
