THE STANDARD METROPOLITAN AREA OF MIAMI, FLORIDA
(Dade County)
LOCATION. Dade County is located in southeastern Florida between 80 and 81 o longitude and be-
tween 250 and 26 latitude. The county was created in 1836, including at that time most of southeast-
ern Florida. In 1909 Palm Beach County was formed as a separate unit. In 1915, with the separation
of Broward County, Dade County obtained its present boundaries.
AREA. Dade County covers an area of 2,109 square miles. The census tracted area covers 144.18
square miles. Density of the tracted area in 1955 was 4,388 persons per square mile.
GOVERNMENT AND CIVIC ACTIVITIES. Dade County is governed by a Board of County Commissioners
of five members. There are 26 incorporated municipalities within the county. Part of the area is unin-
corporated. The Dade County Board of Public Instruction is a separate branch of the state government
with tax districts of its own. Charitable agencies are organized in the Welfare Planning Council. Major
civic organizations are the Miami-Dade, Miami Beach, Hialeah, Coral Gables, South Miami, North
Miami and Homestead-Redlands Chambers of Commerce, the Greater Miami Traffic Association and
the Dade County Research Foundation. Major regional offices of the Federal Government are the Miami
Weather Bureau, and the Federal Housing Administration in Coral Gables.
TRANSPORTATION. Dade County is served by two railroads, the Florida East Coast Railroad and the
Seaboard Air Line Railroad, providing freight and passenger service to northern points. The Greyhound
and the Trailways bus systems render service to northern points, to the West Coast and Key West. To
the south (Homestead), only freight service is provided. The Port of Miami is an ocean harbor on Bis-
cayne Bay near the downtown business district. Its main channel to the Atlantic Ocean is 30 feet in
depth and 300 feet wide. Three piers provide 6,000 feet of berthing space. Miami International Airport
at N. W. 36th Street serves both passenger and cargo traffic. In 1955 there were 22 scheduled national
and foreign airlines operative, of which three were carrying cargo only. In addition 33 non-scheduled
airlines were active. The airport handles the largest foreign cargo volume in the United States
(9,800,000 pounds in the first nine months of 1955). In the 3,000-acre port area, numerous aircraft
overhaul and outfitting plants are established. Total number of airline employees is 17,000- 18,000.
EDUCATION. The public school system has 124 separate school centers, with 3,410 classrooms. Of the
schools, 13 have senior high school grades and 25 junior high school grades, while 111 have elemen-
tary grades only. Ten more school centers are in the planning stage.
Higher education is provided by the University of Miami, a privately endowed institution which was
chartered in 1925. The University has three graduate schools and five undergraduate colleges, plus an
evening division. Its full-time faculty is 504. The main campus is located in Coral Gables. Barry College
is a private Catholic college for women only, with a campus in Miami Shores.
CHURCHES. The 272 major church centers are divided as follows: Baptist 55, Methodist 29, Jewish 26,
Catholic 23, Lutheran 23, Presbyterian 19, Episcopal 12, Christian 8, Christian Science 7, Congrega-
tional 5, Seventh Day Adventists 5, Miscellaneous 40.
HOSPITALS. There are 17 hospitals in the area with a total bed capacity of 3,015. Largest hospital is
Jackson Memorial with 844 beds. It also has teaching facilities for the University of Miami Medical
School.
RECREATION. There are five county ocean parks, Crandon Park and Virginia Beach on Key Biscayne
and Virginia Key, Haulover Park near Sunny Isles, Matheson Hammock Park in Coral Gables
and Homestead Bayfront Park near the Homestead Army Air Force base. Since June, 1947, an area of
1,499,500 acres in Dade and Monroe counties has been made into a national park of the Federal Park
system. Everglades National Park is the third largest and the only sub-tropical park in the system. It
had 247,000 visitors in 1955.
Major sightseeing attractions are Fairchild Tropical Garden, which contains a large collection of tropical
plants, the County Zoological Garden in Crandon Park, the County Art Museum at Villa Viscaya, the
Seaquarium on Virginia Key. Hialeah Park, a horse race track, is open to sightseers outside the racing
season. The Orange Bowl, a football stadium with a seating capacity of 76,000, is located in the city
of Miami.
