INDEX NUMBERS OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN FLORIDA,
FIVE YEAR AVERAGES 1925-29 TO 1945-49, ANNUALLY 1950-1973

INTRODUCTION
In a changing economy, trends in production of various crops and
livestock enterprises move in different directions. Often, within a
generation some commodities go out of production while others increase
rapidly and new enterprises are introduced. Shifting trends are due to
many factors such as changing demand with resulting price changes,
competition from other commodities and/or other areas, changing techno-
logy and other factors.
To measure trends over a period of years, and to combine various
units of production such as boxes of oranges and pounds of beef, an
index has been constructed. Since index numbers are expressed as per-
centages of a base period and are therefore dimensionless, they make it
possible to make a direct comparison between unrelated groups such as
vegetables and poultry.
Index numbers of Florida agricultural production volume have been
prepared using 1967 as a base for comparison. Similar series were
previously computed on a 1935-39 base [1], a 1947-49 base [2] and a
1957-59 base [3]. The change was made to the 1967 base because many
enterprises with which Florida agricultural production might be compared

are now on that base.
The production index measures the volume of gross farm production
when it is produced or harvested rather than when it is marketed. The
production index does not indicate disposition of products. The total
production of each crop or livestock product is the combined result of
all factors affecting output. The production of a given crop may in-
crease due to an increase in acreage, more fertilizer, better insect
and pest control programs or a combination of improved farming practices
and weather. Livestock production is the result of the number and qual-
ity of animals, amount of feed available and production technology used.
Crop and livestock production indexes are shown separately and then com-
bined into a single index of quantity produced without any regard to
change in quality over time.
Most of the data on production and prices used in computing the in-
dexes were obtained from reports of the Crop and Livestock, Statistical
Reporting Service, United States Department of Agriculture. Most crop
and livestock estimates are now prepared on a calendar year basis. Vege-
table crops are reported by harvest seasons to approach a calendar year
production. When the production of a crop was spread over a part of two
calendar years, the total production was considered as being in the latter
year. Thus the 1972-73 production of a crop of oranges was entered in
1973. Production data used excluded quantities of crops not harvested for
any reason.
The index was calculated by the weighted aggregative method using

the formula I = P where I represents the index number for a given

year; P0 the price of a commodity in the 1967 base period, Q1 the quantity
produced in the current year and Q0 the quantity produced during the base
period.

Relative group weights on the 1957-59 base shifted in 1967 as would
be expected for variation in trends in production of various commodities.
Citrus was lower but poultry production increased about 50 percent.
Annual index numbers of Florida's farm production volume are shown
in Table 2 (Appendix). Index numbers of crop acreages and breeding units
are shown in Table 3 (Appendix). Index numbers of yield or production
per unit are shown in Table 4 (Appendix). Individual products are ar-
ranged in related groups as nearly as possible and group totals are shown.
There are some agricultural products omitted from the various indexes
because satisfactory data on the crop or livestock enterprise either were
lacking or were available for only a few years. The most important enter-
prises omitted are nursery and greenhouse products, forestry products,
horses and certain vegetables--carrots, radishes and greens.
Total Volume of Agricultural Production
and Yield or Production per Unit
The total index of production volume for crops and livestock increased
17 percent from 1967 to 1973 (Fig. 1). The index was 117 in 1973 or 2.5
times the total in 1950. The increase in production was steady except for
the years following freezes of 1957 and 1967, when crop production was
sharply curtailed, reducing the overall production average. The increase
in production from 1950 to 1973 averaged 3.0 percent per year.

Yield or production per unit for all crops and livestock followed a
trend similar to total volume of production of all products from 1950'to
1962 but increased less rapidly from 1962 to 1973. Yield in 1973 was 74
percent above the 1950 average.
Production of All Crops and of Livestock and Livestock Products
From 1950 to 1973 the index of total crop production increased from
47 to 110, or an increase of 134 percent on the 1967 base (Fig. 2). This
was an increase of 5.6 percent per year. The trend in production of all
crops was similar to that for livestock and livestock products except
that variations were greater for crops. Crop production is affected more
by variation in weather than livestock production.

The total production of livestock showed a steady increase from 1950
to 1973. The index of production in 1973 was 133 compared to the 1967
base. The annual increase in production from 1950 to 1973 was 10.0 per-
cent per year.
Production and Yield of Citrus
Compared with the 1967 base, the index of citrus production was 44
in 1950 and 118 in 1973 (Fig. 3). Production of citrus fluctuated from.
year to year but the largest declines followed years of freezes. From
1950 to 1973 total production of citrus increased at the rate of 7.0 per-
cent per year.

(1967 = 100)
Yield of citrus showed a pattern similar to that for total produc-
tion except from 1968 to 1973. During this latter period, there was
very little change in yield. Average yield was only about 85 percent
of that obtained in the 1967 base year. A lot of young orchards were
coming into bearing during this period. Since yield per acre for young
orchards is lower, this tended to slow the increase in yield per acre
for all citrus.
Total production of oranges followed the trend for all citrus. Tan-
gerines showed a decline in production when compared to the 1967 base.
Production of grapefruit fluctuated but production in 1973 was 4 percent
above the 1967 production. Substantial increases were shown in the pro-
duction of temple oranges, tangeloes and limes. However, these varieties
account for only a small part of the total production of all citrus.
Production and Yield of Vegetable Crops
Production of all vegetables in 1973 was the same as that obtained in
1967 (Fig. 4). Production of all vegetables went through two cycles during
the study period; one from 1950 to 1958 and the other from 1959 to 1970.
Individual crops in the vegetable group which decreased in production were
cantaloupes and snapbeans. Limabeans decreased to the point that the data
were no longer reported. Crops that showed substantial increases above
the 1967 average were cabbage, cucumbers, lettuce, squash and strawberries.
The yield index for all vegetable crops was very similar to that of
total production from 1950 to 1958. Yield was also similar to production
from 1959 to 1973 except that index of yield per acre was higher than that

average yield during the 1967 base period.
Production and Yield of Grain Crops
Production of grains showed a steady increase from 1950 to 1963 at
an annual rate of 14.3 percent per year (Fig. 5). Production fluctuated
sharply over the rest of the study period. Production in 1970 was only
38 percent of the base period. A blight hit the corn crop in 1970 which
sharply reduced yield per acre of corn. Total production of all grains
followed closely the same pattern as corn production. With few exceptions,
yield increased over most of the study period. The annual rate of increase
from 1950 to 1973 was 8.3 percent per year. Grains have benefitted from

better varieties, higher rates of fertilization, better cultural practices
and better harvesting equipment. Wheat was added to corn and oats as a
crop in the grain group when production was first reported in 1959.
Production and Yield of Tobacco
The production of flue-cured tobacco has been under production con-
trol over the entire period from 1950 to 1973. The amount of tobacco pro-
duced has been affected by the size of the allowed acres each year and
fluctuations in yield per acre (Fig. 6). In 1950, production of all tobacco
was 24 percent less than the 1967 base; in 1973 production was 32 percent
below the base average. However, production varied by type of tobacco.
In 1973, production of flue-cured tobacco was 17 percent below the base
period. Production of shade grown tobacco was 51 percent below the base
period.

Yield per acre of tobacco fluctuated from 1950 to 1973 but, on the
average, it trended upward. However, yield of flue-cured tobacco increased
more than shade grown tobacco. Yield of flue-cured tobacco was 96 percent
higher in 1967 than in 1950; yield of shade grown tobacco was only 32 per-
cent higher. The annual rate of increase over the study period of yield
per acre for the two kinds of tobacco was 3.3 and 0.8 percent respectively.
Total Production and Production per Unit of Meat Animals
Total production of all meat animals trended upward from 1950 to
1973( (ig. 7). Most of the increase was due to the increase in production
of cattle and calves; both hogs and sheep .and lambs showed little change.
Production fluctuated from year to year due to normal variations in

in 1950 and 170 in 1973. This was an increase of 227 percent or 9.5 per-
cent per year. Production of hogs was somewhat lower in 1973 compared to
1950.
The trend in production per unit of meat animals was similar to that
of total production. However, production per unit of hogs increased more
than production per unit of cattle and calves. Production per unit for
hogs increased 7.2 percent per year compared to 3.8 percent for cattle and
calves.

8.7 percent per year.
Production of milk per cow followed a trend similar to total produc-
tion of milk. Index of production per cow was 51 in 1950 and 105 in 1973.
Production per cow more than doubled during this period.
Total Production and Production per Unit for Poultry
Production of poultry and poultry products increased more than any
group of commodiites during the period studied (Fig. 9). In 1973, eggs
were 28 percent above the 1967 base; broilers 160 percent. Most of the
increase in both eggs and broilers came after 1960. Between 1950 and 1973
production of eggs increased 27.2 percent and broilers 29.7 percent per
year.
Although production of all poultry showed a rapid increase from 1950
to 1973, production per unit was much less spectacular. Production per
unit increased only slightly between 1950 and 1964 but then registered a
sharp increase over the rest of the period. The overall increase in pro-
duction per unit of all poultry was 67 percent or an annual increase of
2.8 percent.

SUMMARY
An index has been constructed to measure trends over a period of
years and to combine various units of production such as boxes of oranges
and pounds of beef. Since index numbers are expressed as percentages of
a base period, it is possible to make a direct comparison between unrelated
groups such as vegetables and poultry.
The principal commodities produced in Florida were included in the
indexes. They were grouped by classes to show trends in individual com-
modities and also averages for the groups. Index numbers have been con-
structed to show trends in total volume of production, numbers of crop
acreages and units of livestock and also yield per acre and production per
unit of livestock. The base period for the indexes in this report was
1967.
Much of Florida's agriculture has been characterized by an increase
in numbers of acres and units of livestock produced and also increases in
yield per acre and production per unit of livestock. Consequently there
has been a substantial increase in total volume of agricultural production.
Between 1950 and 1973, total volume of all crops increased 134 percent and
livestock and livestock products 241 percent. During the same period,
yield per acre of crops increased 64 percent and production per unit of
livestock increased 94 percent.
