An elderly local man was
found dead in a pond on his
property Thursday morning,
according to sheriff's reports.
Merle Wayne Shelman, 71,
of 20849 127th Road was
found at about 10 a.m. in a
pond in his front yard. The
man had been in the water for
as long as six weeks, said
Sheriff Tony Cameron.

among three persons shot
Sunday at a mobile home
park in Jasper. Stephon An-
tonio Hawkins, 33, of Live
Oak, was transported to
Shands at UF, as were Nak-
isha Marie Daniels, 26, and
Christopher Lathaniel Sey-
more, 24, both of Jasper.
Hawkins was released
Wednesday, said his stepfa-
ther, Allison Ivey of Live
Oak. Seymore had been re-
leased earlier; the condition
of Daniels was unknown at
press time.
Four arrests have been
made in the case. According
to Hamilton County Sheriff
Harrell Reid, Jeremy Delmar
Walls, 23, of 1288 SW 3rd
St., Jasper was arrested Sun-

Registration is now open for the 2008 Suwan-
Snee'Valley CERT Academy classes to be held
from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on three consecutive Satur-
days, March 8, 15 and 22. Schedule: Units 1, 6,


7 and 8, March 8 at Hamilton County Emer-
gency Operations Center, Jasper; Units 2-5,
March 15 at Columbia County Emergency Op-
erations Center, Lake City; and Unit 9, CERT
review and the drill at Hamilton County Emer-

for those individuals who are committed and
willing to give back to their community. You

Motorhome


destroyed by fire

Firefighter/EMT James Sommers was outside of
SCFR Station I when he noticed heavy black smoke
above the tree line located south of the runway at
Suwannee County Airport, according to reports.
Sommers alerted his crew and proceeded to the north
end of 133rd Lane, where he and his crew found a
motorhome fully involved with fire.
The homeowners were alerted to the fire by the
arrival of Squad 1. The motorhome was parked close
to the west end of a large detached garage, and
firefighters concentrated their efforts on defending
this structure.
LOPD Chief Buddy Williams arrived and assisted
crews when he moved the owner's pickup truck from
its parked position. The front of the pickup was
beginning to melt, due to the extreme heat. The
motorhome, home and pickup belong to Chief
Williams' father, former Suwannee County Sheriff
Al Williams.
The motorhome was a total loss, the pickup suffered
heat damage and a golf cart was damaged as well.
SCFR Investigator Paul Haas combed through the
ash field and found evidence of an electrical short.
The accidental fire was determined to have resulted
from appliance failure causing an electrical short in
the motorhome's internal electrical wire bundle. The
fire was discovered at about 6 p.m., said authorities.

Suwannee robotics:


An update on the Roboh

Sunday, Feb. 17, the Suwannee 4-H
RoboDogs participated in the
Florida State Championship First'
Lego League Robotics Competition, "Power
Puzzle," at Florida Institute of Technology


in Melbourne hosted by Rockwell Collins
(www.rockwellcollins.com) and Walt
Disney World Design & Engineering. The
Suwannee 4-H team was one of 52 teams
from all over Florida that had progressed
past regional level competitions to compete
at the State level. After three rounds, the

RoboDogs team was
dogs ranked in the top
eight teams for
robot performance
and was called back
for the final rounds. Even though the
RoboDogs' autonomous missions worked
fairly well, their high score of 350, was no
match against the team that made a perfect
score of 400.
As part of our research project on energy
conservation, the RoboDogs team received a
Community Pride Grant from Chevron
Corporation to change out the incandescent
EXIT lamps to energy saving LED EXIT
lamps at the fairground complex. The team
is currently working with Tom Bright,
Suwannee County Maintenance, to upgrade
the lights. This effort earned the team a
community service trophy at the tournament
for best exemplifying the spirit of giving
back to their community.
In addition to the trophy, RoboDogs' team
member Kellan Law was nominated by the
RoboDogs team and chosen by the

I felt particular- d
ly good this year
watching the
Westminster Dog -
Show. A beagle
won best in show
- the whole she-
bang. It was the
first time ever for Dwain Walden
a beagle and a
very long time
since any variation of the hound
group had taken the grand prize.
I was glad to see him beat out
that poodle that looked like a half
skinned rat dabbed with big cotton
balls a Q-tip gone awry. And yes,
I know it's not the poodle's fault.
Blame the owner.
Now first let me tell you that I
think dog shows are, for the most
part, subjective. What I mean is,
how do you select one dog over an-
other? I found the same difficulty
in judging a "best Boston butt" in a
cookoff. If you don't drop it in the
dirt, it's in the running with me.
Just once, I would like to judge
that dog show. I would walk
around in my rented tuxedo, ap-
pearing that I knew what the heck I
was doing as if in my head was a
set of criteria by which I was mea-
suring all these dogs. I would rub
their ears between my fingers,
stretch them out and feel their
shoulders and hips, look at their
teeth and have them parade around
several times as if I was having a
very difficult time choosing from
the lot, all the time knowing I was
going to pick the Brittany spaniel
even if it was full of cockle burrs
and looked as if it had been up all
night drinking Jack Daniels. No
one would know but me.
Well...they would now because I've
already told you.
But since the Brittany didn't
make the cut, I was pulling for the
little beagle because he actually
looked like he was having fun. He
even barked a couple of times,
which I understand the judges
don't like for them to do. I guess
he was sort of a rebel.
You see, I think dogs want to
talk to you...just like that little bea-
gle was doing. He didn't act snooty
like some of the powder puffs. It


looked to me like the beagle was
saying, "Hey, can we go play some
catch and wallow in the mud when
this hoodoo is over?"
Like I said, I think dogs can talk.
I'm not saying cats can't talk. Ijust
think they have trouble finding
anyone worthy of conversation.
Here's the nice thing about a dog
show. None of the dogs care if they
don't win. They have no idea that
they are out there competing so
that their owners can have a brandy
at the country club and display a
big brass cup and a lot of big talk
about something that they have
very little to do with.
Now I can appreciate all those
dogs that are in the show, even the
poodles. However, I don't appreci-
ate any of them any more than a
crossbreed mutt that would ride
shotgun with me on a Saturday
morning, slobbering on the truck
window and sharing my bologna
sandwich just glad to be alive and
not living in New York City or
having to watch reality shows.
Purebred dogs don't know about
their bloodlines. And mutts don't
know that their DNA chain might
resemble the street system in At-
lanta.
For us dog lovers, there is a
prayer which I think should pretty
well sum up the relationship be-
tween dog and man: "Lord, help
me to be the person my dog thinks
I am."
Even though I'm a bit cynical
about high-falutin dog shows, I
will continue to watch them just
because I like dogs, and in my
mind I like to write captions as the
judge rubs and scratches them.
"Whoa judge! Do that again! A
little to the right!",
The very upside is that I don't
think there will ever be a Senate
hearing on dog shows amid any al-
legations that they used steroids.
Yet, I relish the thought of a blue-
tick hound testifying because I
think it would be totally honest and
even smarter than many of those
asking the questions.

spoken words (or about 30-45 seconds' worth)

Last week's Rants & Raves really shows the
people speak, good issues all! Politicos, stand
warned, folks, vote them out of office! We need
to support SOS and all cultural events in this
area, not harass the #1 tourist draw in our area.
The vast increase in pivot irrigation systems
surely must have some effect on our water
table, that is common sense. While agriculture
is very important, we are exporting dairy and
paying more for a gallon of milk than gas! The
small farmer has it tough, but Archer Daniels
Midland, Cargill, Lykes, etc. are multi-billion
dollar corporations and raking in the bucks.
Maybe our government should review subsi-
dies and price fixing policies to encourage
competition and growth? Also stop water bot-
tlers, who produce an environmentally unsound,
and basically unneeded commodity by lower-
ing our water table and upsetting the balance of
our springs. Teen pregnancy, agriculture tax
base, lack of skateboard park, etc., and poor
use of revenue are all tied together. We need
rec facilities for youth, not just a skateboard
park, but a theater, a video arcade and other
modem, up-to-date venues for our youth. Not
knockingschool, church or 4-H in any way, but
we must provide more. Jobs for young people
in restaurants and the hospitality industry
would contribute a lot, to our youth and our
area revenues. Maybe we should open up from
our agriculture, timber economy, bring in some
tax paying businesses; etc. Churches are fine,
we need them, and we sure have them, but they
own vast tracts of land here, tax free, and many
of these facilities cater to non-local events. Full
circle, back to politics, change it!


It has been stated by survey analysis the
greatest waste of water in a household is water
running continually in a shower (up to 30 gal-
lons think about it the next time you shower).

How much water do all of us waste daily in our
household? The farmers in our county are prob-
ably more concerned than anyone else regard-
ing the drought. We try to conserve water more
than most people because we are aware of how
valuable it is. Let us all work together to con-
serve our water and each of us realize what is
"waster water" and what is "necessary" to pro-
vide food.


Will someone at City Hall please wake up
and sell the SUV. While gas prices are intreas-
ing at a record rate, the city is buying gas-guz-
zlers. Come on people. Come to your senses
before it is too late. The SUV must go!


I just like to agree with the people about the
skateboarding that they want to put in here for
these kids. We're complaining about teen preg-
nancy or we're complaining about kids on
drugs at school. Give the kids something to do,
keep them occupied, keep them out of trouble,
Where is the skating rink that was to be built in
Suwannee County? Where is something for
these kids to do? Give them something to do
and they'll stay out of trouble. We're building
all these complexes and everything. Let's build
something for the kids. Step up and put the kids
first.


How many people know that there are base-
ball travel teams in Live Oak? Well you might
have heard of it but do they advertise it so all
children have the opportunity to try out? No.
How fair is that to the boys that would like the
same opportunity? You would think someone
would announce tryouts for it. For there might
be talent out there in our community that no-
body even knows about because they don't gei
a chance.

The trouble with the mayor and city council
and city administrator spending as much mon-
ey as they do. I think they should be investigat-
ed by the attorney general's office because it's
not fair to the city of Live Oak people and the
people of Live Oak forthem to spend this mich
money. It's the mayor's fault and he should be
held accountable and it's possible criminal
charges need to be brought [Editor's note: un-
intelligible comment here] and the city admin-
istrator should be fired.

between composting and
mulching? Composting is
the natural process of
decomposition and the
recycling of organic

amendment. Mulching is
placing any material (wood
chips, paper, and rocks)
over the soil to reduce soil
moisture evaporation,
insulate plant roots from
extreme temperature
changes, reduce erosion
and suppress weeds.
Oh no, you, think, I don't
want "a stinking compost
pile." The good news is
that when a compost pile
has oxygen and is kept
only slightly moist, with
the right mix of green and
brown material it has a
pleasant earthy aroma.
Compost piles with foul
odors wafting from them
don't have enough, oxygen
or there is too much wet
green material or animal
products have been
dumped into the pile.
Avoid putting meat scraps,
eggs or any protein
substance in your home
compost piles. (This tip
does not apply to
agriculture composting.)
Think of compost as
black gold to add to our
nutrient poor sandy soils.
Compost also benefits the
soil by improving soil
structure, texture and
aeration. It also increases
soil's water-holding
capacity. Compost loosens
clay soils, allowing for
better aeration and helps

stimulates healthy root
development in plants.

Create a self-mulching
-bed:
1) Allow leaves to
accumulate under the tree
canopy. You can add ferns
around the base of trees to
keep the area aesthetically
pleasing. Ferns seem to
just "gobble" up those
leaves.
2) Compost bins are not
necessary, but they keep
debris in a pile and help
retain heat.
3) Build your compost
pile in a sunny location.
4) Combine a mix of
green and brown materials.
5) Turn the compost pile
with a pitchfork' to increase
aeration.
6) Always bury kitchen
waste inside the pile to
discourage pests and
prevent odors from rotting

Woman critically

injured Monday
Melody Lee, Special to the Democrat
Shelly Bennett, 46, of Jasper is in critical
condition after being struck from behind
by a vehicle about 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb.
25, according to a report from the Jasper
Police Department.
Bennett was walking east along the side
of NW 3rd St, when she was hit by a light
colored Nissan, possibly a truck, that was
also traveling east, authorities say. The ve-
hicle fled the scene.
Anyone with information about the ac-
cident can call the Jasper Police Depart-
ment at 792-1130 or Crime Stoppers at
792-TIPS (8477). You do not have to give
your name when you call Crime Stoppers
and you may receive up to $1,000 reward
if your information leads to an arrest.


Mobile home burns

No one home, no one hurt

A mobile home burned about noon on
Saturday, Feb. 23, according to a report
from the fire department. The Bellville
Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department re-
sponded to the fire at 2672 NW 6th Dr. in
Jennings. The Jennings and Crossroads
Volunteer Fire/Rescue Departments also
provided assistance.
Sharon Strickland lived in the home,
which was owned by Artie Johnson of
Jennings. Johnson reported the fire, ac-
cording to the report. No one was inside
the home at the time of the fire.
There was approximately $6,000 dam-
age to the home and about $3,000 dam-
age to the contents, the report states.


Mayo Correctional Institution to expand

Mayo Correctional Institu-
tion Warden Jim Witt is ex-
cited about the future of the
prison. Witt was the guest
speaker during Mayo Ro-
tary's regular scheduled
meeting on Wednesday, Feb.
201.
In 1984, the prison first
opened, housing 800 in-
mates. Today, that number
has grown to 1,700.
MCI offers its inmates
health and dental care as
well as religious, betterment,
education, transition, and
wellness/fitness programs.
Before they finish their
sentencing and are released
back into society, the inmates
are required to take a course
on life management skills.
According to Witt, this
course teaches the inmates
certain skills that will help
them with daily tasks such
as getting a job and manag-
ing their checkbook. ,
MCI is a "level five" facili-
ty and houses every type of
inmate except those who are
on death row, according to
Witt. Security at the prison is
state-of-the-art. "We take
great strains to try and make
certain the security systems
are always working proper-
ly," Witt said. "They are
checked twice every shift.
Once a month we go
through a crawl test that re-
quires someone to crawl
every zone. We use the

cer possible. His job is to try
to beat the system. Our job
is to make sure it doesn't
happen."
Most of the employees at
the. prison have been there
since 1983. Some of them are
getting dose to retirement,
Witt noted. Communication
with staff members as well
as with the inmates is an es-
sential skill that a person


must have in order to work
at the prison. Witt also stat-
ed that if a person does not
learn how to communicate
well, it will be very difficult...
to survive and work in that
type of environment
Construction of the new
prison at MCI will not begin
until May It will house 1,300
inmates. According to Witt,
the estimated cost to build
the new facility will be $85


million.
In addition, a new work
camp will be constructed at
MCI. It will house 540 in-
mates and will cost roughly
$13 million to build. Accord-
ing to Witt, the prison
should be finished by Dec.
2009.
Both the new prison and
the work camp will add 350
employees to MCI's current
333 workforce.

Karen Byrd was recog-
nized as Teacher of the
Year. "I appreciate greatly
the opportunity to serve as
'Teacher of the Year,' espe-
dally since we are nomi-
nated by our peers," Byrd

Since 1985, Byrd has
been employed by the
school. When she first be-
gan working at LES, she
was a Teacher's Aide. Lat-
er, she received her teach-
ing degree from FAMU in
1994. After graduating
from FAMU, she began
teaching fourth grade and

Under Blalock's supervi-
sion in Suwannee County,

ished from the elementary to
the high school level. School
facilities were newly built
(Suwannee Middle, Branford
High gym, Branford cafete-
ria, Langford Stadium) or
renovated (Suwannee High,
new Suwannee-Hamilton
Technical Center business
building, Douglass Center,
student restrooms at Suwan-
nee Intermediate).
During Blalock's tenure,
Suwannee County teachers'
salaries' were the best in the
area. During a three-year
economic recession, there
were no employee lay-offs;
academic programs were


maintained; and the district
survived state funding cut-
backs without the loss of
contingency funds. '
Blalock implemented the
district policy of maintaining
retiree's health insurance
premiums, making Suwan-
nee County the only district
in the state of Florida to do
so.
Community involvement
is one of the keys to success-
ful schools, Blalock says.
Blalock started a partnership
with community businesses
and parents by establishing
the following: Suwannee
Foundation for Excellence,
school improvement teams at
each school, community
leaders, serving as mentors
and school system participa-
tion in community charity
drives.
Blalock is a 22-year mem-
ber of the Live Oak Kiwanis
Club and is currently onits
board of directors.
Blalock's qualifications,
professional and civic affilia-
tions are numerous. His col-
lege matriculation includes
Paul Quinn College (Waco,
Texas), Florida Agriculture


& Mechanical University
and the University of Flori-
da. Blalock is a state certified
superintendent and serves on
the SACS/CASI Florida state 3
committee. This 35-state and
65-nation committee is re-
sponsible for accrediting
schools and sharing best
practices for improving the
effectiveness of schools and
school districts.
Blalock is the husband of
Pauline. They have three
children and six grandchil-
dren. Three of his grandchil- -
dren are currently enrolled at
Suwannee Middle and Inter- -
mediate schools.

Thomas said a tree fell on a
power line on 161st Road
about a half of a mile north
of CR 250 and caused a
small brush fire.
A tree also fell across CR
249 at the double-S curve
just north of Rosemary
Baptist Church, and another
tree fell across Mitchell
Road.
Branford Elementary was
without power starting
around 2:26 p.m. The power
was restored about 20 min-
utes later by emergency
generators.
According to the National
Weather Service in Jack-
sonville, the highest wind
speed recorded was 30
miles per hour in Lake City,
the closet observation sta-
tion to Live Oak.


Schools, teachers union remain at impasse

of health coverage for in-
structional and non-instruc-


tional employees who retire
with 30 or more years of ser-
vice, with at least 20 years of
service in Suwannee County
Schools, and are 52 years of
age or older at retirement.


The board's chief negotia-
tor wants to change that,
however. Under the board's
proposal, retirees would pay
the full premium. Union ne-
gotiators want the school
board to' continue making a
contribution to retirees'
health insurance. District of-
ficials maintain the district
needs to conserve its spend-
ing in light of possible im-
pending budget cuts.
During the mediation ses-
sion the board sent the union
a proposal package that in-
cluded phasing out, as of


July 1, 2009, the insurance
benefit for retirees and for
those who have entered the
district's drop program.
Union negotiators re-
sponded with the' following
counterproposal: Beginning
this July the board will con-
tinue to pay the same amount
for retiree insurance minus
the state's monthly insurance
allowance, $150.
The teams also discussed
employment practices, com-
pensation schedules and
teaching and working condi-
tions.


The teams remain at im-
passe, and unless one side
changes its position, a spe-
cial magistrate will conduct
a hearing and make a recom-
mendation. If either or both
parties reject the recommen-
dation the issue will go be-
fore the school board for fi-
nal determination.
The union and board have
met on numerous occasions
since May, debating salary
schedules and contractual
changes. The teams came to
an- agreement in December
on a salary package. Once


negotiations conclude, raises
will be retroactive to July 1,
2007.
The board's chief negotia-
tor proposed making numer-
ous changes to contracts,
calling the language "redun-
dant" and "archaic." The
union says that such changes
would "radically alter" em-
ployees contracts, affecting
working conditions as well
as retiree benefits.
The district has been oper-
ating under terms of the pre-
vious contracts, which ex-
pired in June.

School recently.
The North Florida Middle School
Championship is the end-of-season
tournament that decides the best of
the best. The Bullpups beat 15 other
schools to win the title.,
Coach Randy McManaway said his


team had an outstanding year.
'"The boys have trained very hard,"
he said. "The long hours of practice
has really paid off."

Better start brushing up
on your turkey calling,
because spring gobbler
season's here. Whether
you prefer to use a mouth
call, box call, slate or any
combination, March
means it's time to start
talking' turkey.
One of the most coveted
and sought-after game
species in Florida is the
Osceola turkey, also
known as the Florida


turkey. This unique bird
is one of five subspecies
of wild turkey in North
America.
The Osceola lives only
on the Florida peninsula
and nowhere else in the
world, making it
extremely popular with
out-of-state hunters.
They're similar to the
Eastern subspecies (found
in the Panhandle) but tend
to be a bit smaller and
typically are darker with
less white barring on the
flight feathers of their
wings.
The white bars on the
Osceola are narrower,
with an irregular, broken
pattern, and don't extend
to the feather shaft. It's


the black bars of the
Osceola that actually
dominate the feather.
Similarly, secondary wing'
feathers also are darker.

the Small Senior Open Level 3 division

The National Wild Turkey
Federation and the Florida
Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission
(FWC) recognize, in their
respective turkey registry
programs, any wild turkey
harvested within or south of
the counties of Dixie,
Gilchrist, Alachua, Union,
Bradford, Clay and Duval to
be the Osceola subspecies.
Eastern turkeys and
crossbreeds are found north
and west of those counties
in the Panhandle.
The highly anticipated
spring turkey season runs
March 1-April 6 in the
South Hunting Zone and
March 15-April 20 in the
Northwest and Central
zones. The exception is
Holmes County, where the
season runs three days,
March 15-17.
Hunters may take bearded
turkeys and gobblers only,
and the daily bag limit's
one. The season and
possession limit on turkeys
is two, except in Holmes
County, where the season
limit's one.
Shotguns are the best
choice when hunting
turkeys, but if you're so
inclined, you may use a
rifle, muzzleloader or
handgun, or you can try
your luck with a bow or
crossbow.
Shooting hours on private
lands are one-half hour
before sunrise to sunset, but
on wildlife management
areas (WMAs), you must
quit hunting at 1 p.m.
Of course, you can use


turkey decoys to help entice
that stubborn old bird, but
you're not permitted to hunt
turkeys with dogs, use
recorded turkey calls or
sounds, shoot them while
they're on the roost or over
bait. You also can't hunt
them when you're within
100 yards of a game-
feeding station.
To participate in spring
turkey hunting, you'll need
a Florida hunting license
and a turkey permit. If you
plan to pursue a gobbler on
one of Florida's many
WMAs, you also must
purchase a management
area permit.
All of these licenses and
permits are available at
county tax collectors'
offices, most retail outlets
that sell hunting and fishing
supplies, by calling toll-free

Suwannee Country Club, US 90 East, Live Oak. Four-per-

human endeavors. Without them, we would probably in
still be stuck in the. Dark Ages. And it is wo r th
pointing out, that science and philosophy, aind
indeed, all areas of learning, give one a renvd ..
appreciation for the wondrous creation of 1illch
we are all a part. But, it is also important to
realize that knowledge has its limits. We miitc O
say that knowledge is limited to the empirical
realm, the realm of experience, whereas
faith takes us beyond the realm of
experience. As the great German
philosopher Kant stated in his Critique of .
Pure Reason, we must "limit knowledge .:
in order to make room for faith." Kant was
warning the metaphysicians of his day, who
incorrectly thought that they could know
about God and the super-sensible realms of
the universe, that human knowledge simply
could not extend that far. Andat the same
Time, he was battling the unbelief of atheists
who thought that faith was nullified by modern
science. Quite to the contrary, Kant showed
that human knowledge is limited to the
'-empirical realm, i.e., the realm of experience, but
that this has the very important benefit of imakiiig
room for faith. So, we must make room for faith ini
our lives and open up our hearts to the rcalit.v, f
God.

Heart Matters

Think about the following
question and answer it as
honestly as you can: What
do you consider the most
important value in a
relationship?
' It is critical that you know
the answer to this question,
because when you value
something in a relationship,
you will make sure that it is
present and protected and
you will not tolerate
anything that destroys that
value. Your values work as
boundaries to bring good
things into your
relationships and keep bad
things out...so what you


value is what you will have.
In the same way, if we do
not see something as
valuable, we will notprotect
it, nor will we fight to gain
or keep it.
Love is often the most
popular answer to our
question. We understand that
giving and receiving love is
an important value in
relationships because there is
a deep need inside all of us
to love and be loved...the
problem is that rarely does
the kind of love we are
looking for actually exist in
our relationships.
Unfortunately, we often
settle for a counterfeit
version because we aren't
sure what the real thing
looks like. In I Corinthians
13:4-8, the Bible gives us
God's definition of love:
"Love is patient, love is
kind. It does not envy, it
does not boast,
, it is not proud. It is not
rude, it is not self-seeking, it
is not easily
angered, and it keeps no
record of wrongs. Love does
not delight
in'evil but rejoices with
the truth. It always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes, and always


perseveres. Love never
fails."
Let's look at this
description of love and
establish the boundaries it
sets (the good things it
brings into a relationship and
the bad things it keeps out).
Real love is patient and
kind, willing to give others a
,second chance and forgive
mistakes. It is not quick to
anger; nor is it controlling
and judgmental.
It does not make room
for jealousy of the good
things that come the way of
others, nor is it prideful and
"one-up" others over our
own blessings.
Love looks out for the
best interest of others and
doesn't hold grudges.
Love rejoices in the
truth, even when it is
difficult to hear because
even the worst conflicts can
be resolved when everything
is out in the open. It always
protects, not by lying or
covering an offense, but for
the best interest of those
involved. Love also helps us
do the right thing to protect
someone we love, even
when it may risk the
relationship.
Love always hopes the


best is yet to come, and that
there is always room to grow
and change. It lets us
understand that people will
fail us because they are not
perfect, but neither are we,
and that love can help us
move past those failures.
This kind of love put into
practice in any relationship
will do a great job keeping
good things in and.bad
things out...protect it, for it is
valuable and worth fighting
for, because our hearts
matter.

This has been a fast ,
week. Lots of stuff
happening. Many
deadlines. Way too
busy to catch my
breath. Too busy even
to spend time nurturing
the important stuff.
Of course I know that
such rushing around is '
counterproductive. But
I do it anyway because
busyness creates the illusion of
productivity. Then there's the sad
reality that I too easily allow myself to
be manipulated by the ambient
culture.
I made the following observation in
my book but it bears repeating. Less
than ten percent of professing
Christians engage in an active,
deliberate, daily devotional discipline.
The statistic has einerged from
personal observations, conversations
with countless people and in-depth
interviews with over 200 pastors from
more than 20 denominations. The
statistic was confirmed in a
Christianity Today article (2006).
Ten percent is a really low number.
But here's another piece of data -
completely reliable that turns out to
be remarkable: 100% of those who do
maintain a regular devotional
discipline report that the daily routine


pays off in ways that
are nothing short of
huge.
S .. "By huge I mean
eternal, unremitting,
awesome, satisfying,
and unarguably life-
changing. By huge I
also mean discernible
improvement in daily
lives across the board.
Relationships,
parenting, work
attitude, productivity,
work satisfaction,
effective Christian witness, l1ye life;
need I go on?
"This is true even when the people I
talk with believe they are only just
beginning to scratch the surface
regarding their daily walk with God.
The investment of just a few short but
deliberate minutes, every day, makes a
difference in lives that cannot be
accounted for by any other variable.
"If any advertised manufactured
product could claim anywhere near.
the level and consistency of the
verifiable results found in
consequence of a daily devotional life
then that product would sell off the
shelves'.
"We know the truth; we are aware
of the benefits. So what .is holding us
back?"

history, Ryan Newman had his
winning 50th running of the
Daytona 500 car the No. 12 Alltel
Dodge inducted into Daytona 500
Experience recently.
Newman, owner Roger Penske
and crew chief Roy McCauley
inducted their winning race
machine into Daytona 500
Experience as part of the Banquet
Brown 'N Serve Champions
Breakfast a day after 42 lead
changes and 16 different leaders
made for one of the most exciting
Daytona 500s in event history.
The trio participated in a fan
forum inside the attraction and


received their winning Daytona
500 leather jackets from Daytona
International Speedway President
Robin Braig. In addition, Gatorade
presented the 2008 Daytona 500
champ with a framed photo from
Gatorade Victory Lane.
Newman also autographed artist
David Arrigo's DIRECTV
Speedweeks mural hood painting
and the entire No. 12 team
including Newman had already
signed winning No. 12 car the
night before.
"It's sinking in," Newman said.

The 50th running of the Daytona
500 will go down as one of the
most memorable in history with 42
lead changes among 16 drivers.
The 16 different leaders were the
second-highest total in the history
of "The Great American Race
(record is 2006, 18 leaders).
The 42 lead changes at the
start/finish line were the most
since 2001 (49) and the 81 green
flag passes for the lead on the
legendary 2.5-mile tri-oval is the
second-most at DIS since 2005
when the gathering of Loop Data
began.
During his question and answer
session with the media on Monday,
Newman, who pocketed a winner's
check of $1,506,045, reflected on
his early memories of visiting
Daytona International Speedway
with his family.
Newman, a graduate of Purdue
with a degree in engineering,

me. It was kind of a
reassurance for me to know
- and he's been watching
me for 26 years driving a
car he knows when I have
one in the bag and when I
don't and he knows when
it's close. I just felt, as I
got into Turn 3, that it was
going to be a good one
back to the start/finish line
and he was right."

INTO THE GARAGE
"There were times where

through the gate with no
credentials whatsoever
because that was the level
of security that they had. I
sat on the pit wall and got

here when my grandfather
passed away. It gave us the
opportunity to come down.
We came down with my
aunt and uncle, spent time
in their motel room
sleeping on the floor, and
we had bad habits. We
stayed up all night racing,
came back and had Krispy
Kremes for dinner and had
Krispy Kremes for
breakfast and that's part of
the reason I look the way I
do. We had good times
though. He'd come and
pick me up from his work
and pulled me out of
school. The stipulation was
that I had to have my
schoolwork done. We had a
log book of records to see
which state we could clear
the fastest. It was just all
good times. We'd drive
down here at night and
we'd pull into the Cracker
Barrel parking lot and
sleep. That was one of the
first things we talked about
this weekend. He actually
said that this weekend on
the radio, 'Do you
remember pulling into the
Cracker Barrel and
sleeping?' and I said,
'Yeah, I remember getting
up in the middle of the
night and having to take a
leak and it was raining too
hard so I just stayed in the
car. So, I remember a lot of
things.

"So much effort has gone
into me sitting here. But,
we always had tickets
because they were in the
family and the idea was to
get in the garage.
Sometimes we'd use
construction paper. I
remember stopping at a
Winn Dixie over here and
we'd look for construction
paper. We did what we had
to do. If you were good
enough you could sneak in,
figure out what the
credentials actually looked
like, and then you'd go
back and make your own."

ON TALKING WITH

came to our bus after
everything was over with.
He just came over and
smiled and hugged, and
Lynda (Richard's wife) as
well, and talked to Krissie
(Ryan's wife). It was just
an honor to have someone
like the King come over
and take time out of his
schedule when he has other
things to do and

friend and I've been
texting him back and forth
last night and this morning.

Just a lot of people. But
when the King came over,
that was pretty special."

"I've thought about it a


bit again, it hasn't all
sunk in when we had the
driver's meeting with all of
the great drivers up there,
to see all the history of the
sport sitting on one stage -
obviously it's not all the-
history, it's only part of the
history but to be someone
who appreciates the history
(of the Daytopa 500),
whether it's '76 when Petty


and (David) Pearson had
their deal or '98 when
(Dale) Earnhardt shook
everyone's hand on pit
road, those are the two
things that stick out in my
mind. Just to be part of the
50th running is an honor -
to win it, it's got to sink
in."
