Officials look at South

Bay site for port

Informative
discussion held in
the Glades

By Nina G. Wills
Special to INI
The Port of Palm announced
it is moving forward to estab-
lish a 3,500-acre Inland Logis-
tics Center (ILC) in the south-
ern Lake Okeechobee region at
a community meeting in South
Bay on Fri. March 20.

The industrial and commer-
cial center would include ware-
houses and would serve as a
distribution hub for cargo. Ac-
cording to Port authorities, the
center would also create thou-
sands of jobs for residents a
welcomed reprieve from the
area's economic decline. Over
100 people attended the forum
including city leaders and,com-
missioners from Belle Glade,
Pahokee, and South Bay.
"We are planning for the
future growth of western Palm
Beach County. We have many

voices, but my hope is that we
will walk out of here with one
message, one voice. We know
that we need that port in our
communities. We know that
the job market is very bleak
right now," said Shirley Walker-
Turner, mayor of South Bay.
Edward Oppel,,echairnian of
the Port of Palm Beach District
Board of Commissioners, ex-
plained that this would be the

of girl, 12

If convicted, life in
prison is possible
for defendant
By Naji Tobias
The Sun
BELLE GLADE A 35-year-
old man has been arrested by
the sheriff's office and charged
with alleged molestation of a
12-year-old girl.
Kenneth Thomas, authori-
tiessaid, is suspected of touch-
ing the genital area of the victim
in a lewd or lascivious man-
ner, netting the man a slew of
charges as a result.
The defendant, who was ar-
rested via warrant by deputies
on Mar. 15, was charged with
one count each of 10 different
criminal acts, including false
imprisonment, child abuse,
kidnapping/false imprisonment
of a child under 13 years old,
soliciting sexual activity with.
a child and lewd or lascivious
molestation, among others;
According to a probable
cause affidavit provided by the
Palm Beach County Sheriff's
Office (PBSO), the victim told
detectives that the defendant
took her pants off and then

tried to take her underwear
garment off.
It was revealed that as the
suspect, of Belle Glade, at-
tempted to take her underwear
off, she was trying to hold it
tight at her waist so it wouldn't
come down.
The victim told detectives,
according to the arrest report,
that the defendant said these
words to her:
"I made you and whatever I
tell you to do, you will do it,"
the defendant allegedly told the
victim upon performing the
act.
The defendant later alleg-
edly put his hand between the
victim's legs and then rubbed
her private parts.
All of this reportedly oc-
curred on Aug. 30, 2008 at
about 2 p.m.
The other charges placed on
the defendant include cruelty
toward a child (abuse without
great harm), obstruction of
justice, tampering with a vic-
tim, witness and/or informant,
lewd or lascivious behavior by
an adult on a victim between
12 and 16 years old and sexual
assault (sexual battery act by

plans changes

to. format

Independent Newspapers,
publishers of the Sun, an-
nounced plans to convert the
size of its six community news-
papers from the traditional
broadsheet format to a new
"compact" format.
Readers will see the change
in format beginning with next
week's editions:
The biggest change, said
Tom Byrd, the company's vice
president of operations, will be
in the size of the page.
"The width of the page re-
mains relatively the same, but
the height of the page will be
reduced from 22 inches to 12
inches," says Mr. Byrd.

The new format is meant to
appeal to readers and advertis-
ers, in addition to being more
efficient and environmentally
responsible.
"We're confident readers
will find the new modular for-
mat convenient to read and
much more attractive," said Mr.
Byrd.
"Advertisers will immediate-
ly notice that their ads stand out
more and they will see greater
impact from their ads in this
new format," added Mr. Byrd.
The compact size also
provides more opportunity

Chamberlain: 'I
have no idea where
it came from'

By Naji Tobias
The Sun
BELLE GLADE An alligator
reportedly made its way to the
Palm Beach County Jail Com-
plex recently.
On Sunday, Mar. 15, the
four-foot long animal was dis-
covered by a jail sergeant from
the Eagle Academy.
At about 4 p.m., it was re-
vealed that Sergeant Arnetta
Haywood spotted the gator

crawling from underneath the
jail complex's gate.
Mark Chamberlain, a captain
with the Palm Beach County
Sheriff's Office (PBSO), found
out about this episode the next
day, when he was scheduled to
return to work there.
After the PBSO central con-
trol operator notified jail of-
ficials about the unique case,
Sergeant M. Carrigan, the af-
ternoon shift supervisor for the
jail that day, went outside of the
facility to check it out.
It must be noted that no
inmates were outside on that
Sunday for recreation in other
words, no injuries were report-

ed since only the two sergeants
from the jail actually saw it.
"They were all in safely,"
Chamberlain said of the in-
mates.
Shortly after the discovery,
officials from the Fla. Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commis-
sion (FWC) were notified and
later showed up at the jail.
FWC officials reportedly
took the animal into custody by
placing duct tape on the alliga-
tor, tying its legs up to the point
of immobilization and whisk-
ing it away from the facility.
It was somewhat akin to a

Fireproof in Pahokee

FIREPROOF, the movie pro-
duced by the makers of FACING
THE GIANTS, is coming to Paho-
kee on Saturday, March 28. *
At work, inside burning build-
ings, Capt. Caleb Holt lives by
the old firefighter's adage: Nev-
er Leave Your Partner Behind.
At home, in the cooling embers
of his marriage, he lives by his
own rules. His job is to rescue
others. Now Caleb must face his
toughest job ever... rescuing his
wife's heart.
Starring Kirk Cameron and
Erin Bethea, FIREPROOF brings
to the screen the action of fire-

fighters, the conflict of a dying
marriage, and the tenderness of
rekindled romance. It does a su-
perlative job of digging into seri-
ous issues that's deeply affect
so many of us every day.
Good Shepherd Church of
God invites movie-goers to din-
ner at 6 p.m. with show time at
7 p.m. Both dinner and the mov-
ie are complimentary. A nursery
will be provided for children
under the age of 15. The church
is located at 1800 Bacom Point
Road in Pahokee. For more in-
formation or to reserve tickets,
call 561-924-7284.

Coming soon: A new look to an old friend

By Tom Byrd
Nothing is permanent except
change.
That statement is true more so
today than ever before. We live
in a changing world. We're all
struggling to come to grips with
a changing economy. Citizens are
adapting to new technology that
could change our lives for the bet-
ter.
The newspaper you're hold-
ing in your hands is also making
a change. It's a major change for
us, but one we're confident will
be positive for our readers and
advertisers.
Beginning with next week's
edition, The Sun newspaper may
appear just a little bit different to
you.
We will begin publishing our
newspapers in the new, modern
"compact" format vs. the tradi-
tional "broadsheet" format.
It marks the first major format
change in many years for the
company and reflects a design
that studies have shown is pre-
ferred by readers and advertisers
alike.
But no matter how you look at
it, it's still your hometown news-
paper!
The most noticeable differ-
ence, of course, is the size of the
product. The new "compact" is
smaller -- but don't let its size fool
you. The new "compact" offers
tremendous advantages over the
broadsheet and more and more

newspaper companies are start-
ing to take notice:
The new size provides great-
er convenience to readers. It's
easier to hold, easier to read.
The new format allows us
greater flexibility when it comes
to packaging and design. We're
confident you'll like the way con-
tent and features are organized
and presented in next week's edi-
tion.
Most important, the new
compact will allow us to expand
the use of color throughout the
publication. With the new for-
mat, you'll see much more color.
The pages will be more exciting
and the photographs will be more
vibrant.
We're also confident the new
format will be attractive to our
advertisers. We recognize times
are tough and many businesses
are struggling to survive. We are
constantly in search of ways to
improve our products and pro-
vide advertisers with an effective
and cost-affordable way to reach
consumers in their market. We
think the new format gives our
advertisers more "bang for their
buck!" F,
The new compacts provide
greater impact for advertisers.
Again studies have shown that
readers tend to recall and re-
act to advertisements in com-
pacts at a greater rate than they
do in traditional broadsheets.
The No. 1 complaint from our

local advertisers over the years in-
volved "ad clutter." Frankly, there
were too many ads on a page -
and the more ads on the page, the
less likely their ad was to be spot-
ted by a reader.
Compacts conquer that chal-
lenge. The overall page size is
smaller. There are fewer ads on
a page, so each ad stands out
much more.than if it were on a
page crowded with dozens of
small ads.
Finally, the new compact is
much more efficient for us to pro-
duce. That's important in these
tough economic times. We've
been the Greater Lake Okeecho-
bee area's No. I community
newspaper publisher for over
three decades and we have ev-
ery intention of continuing in that
role.
We're not ashamed in the least
bit to say this move will help us
streamline our efforts, control
costs, and be more environmen-
tally friendly. That's beneficial to

our readers and advertisers, not
to mention our company and its
employees.
Despite the new look, rest
assured everything else you've
come to expect from The Sun re-
mains the same. We're still your
hometown newspaper providing
you with the same great news
and information you've come to
expect from us.
We hope you like our new
look. Please let us know your
thoughts and suggestions for im-
provements. We appreciate your
continued support and look for-

By Pastor John Hicks

First United Methodist Church
It's hard to believe, but Easter
is right around the corner. So are
taxes. ,
This is another year where
Easter and taxes fall on the same
week.
I find it ironic that as I sit at my
computer trying to outline my
Easter messages, I have the tax
deadline weighing down on me.
I have my Bible opened to the
passage proclaiming, "He is not
here, He is risen," and nearby is
my tax material for 2008.
With no apologies to the IRS,
one seems spiritual and the other
mundane.
One minute I'm at the cross,
the next I'm at my checkbook.
Even though I might feel a
little crucified financially, the time
I spend on one seems holy, the
other worldly.
One reminds me how God in

Christ paid it all, and the next re-
minds me that there's something
I have to pay.
In all of this, I try to keep in
mind the words of our Lord to
give Caesar the things that are
Caesar's and give to God the
things that are God's.
Sometimes, however, I strug-
gle with what I want or have to
give.
I'm currently planning my
message for the Palm Sunday
Sunrise service at the Clewiston
levee at 6:30 a.m. on April 5, and
I can't help but wonder about the
guy who gave Jesus his donkey
for the Palm Sunday procession.
I wonder if the guy who gave
the donkey for Jesus to ride into
Jerusalem on Palm Sunday strug-
gled with his giving or the fact that
he was asked to give generously
in a time when finances were
tight..
We don't know his name or
what he looks like.
We only know that Jesus told

His disciples that "If anyone asks
you why you are taking the don-
keys, say that the Master has need
of them, and he will send them at
once." (Matthew 21:3)
Did this guy just give the ani-
mals to someone in need, or did
he know it was Jesus who needed
the donkeys?
Did he worry about getting the
donkeys back?
I wonder about these things
because sometimes it's hard for
me to give as freely as I might.
There are times I like to keep
my animals to myself for my own
use.
Sometimes I rationalize not
giving by wondering if my little
deeds and giving today will re-
ally make a difference in the long
run.
Sometimes I don't give it be-
cause I'm not sure what to give or
how to give, or I get busy and put
things on the back burner.
And then there are the times
God calls to my. heart and I re-

The Tried Stone, a Sure Foundation!

By Jackie Miller,
Evangelist

First Christian Church
In Isaiah. 28:16, Isaiah proph-
esied: "Behold I lay in Zion for a
foundation a stone, a tried stone,
a precious stone, a sure founda-
tion: he that believeth shall not
make haste."
The scripture is filled with the
trials of Jesus and His Church. Je-
sus Himself was tried by the devil,
among other places, in the wil-
derness of temptation.
He was led out into the wilder-
ijness to be tempted by the devil.
The devil tried the stone and. Je-
sus did not break.
The devil departed form Him
for a season and returned many
times and always the same. The
stone.did not break!
I Not only was the Lord tried
by the devil, He was also tried by
man.
They said to Him in the clos-
ing days of His ministry, "By what
authority doest thou these things,
and who gave thee this authority?
Many and varied were the tri-
als. Is it lawful to give tribute to
Caesar?
Whose wife shall she be?
What is the greatest com-.
mandment in the law?
Show us a sign from heaven.
How then doth
He now say I am come down
out of heaven?
How can he give us His flesh.
to eat? Art thou the King of the
Jews? What is truth?
How can a man be born again

when he is old?" On and on the
questions came throughout His
ministry.
Jesus was thoroughly tried
by men, and the stone did not
break!
Not only was He tried by the
devil and man; the Heavenly Fa-
ther tried Him. On the cross Jesus
said, "My God; My God!
Why hast thou forsaken Me?:
The tried stone did not break!
Not only was the stone a tried
stone; but it was also a precious
stone. Isaiah said it was a precious
cornerstone and Peter called it a
stone elect and precious.
Under normal circumstances
we take water for granted. It is as
near to us as the turn of the tap.
But to a person on the desert with
no prospects of getting more, his.
canteen full of water is more pre-
cious than gold.
He will not wish to waste a
drop,. Jesus, who gives the water
of life, must be recognized as the
most precious thing in our lives!
Peter told the council at Je-
rusalem, when they were being
tried for healing the lame man at
the Beautiful Gate of the Temple,
"There is therefore now no other
name under Heaven given among
men whereby we must be saved."
Jesus is our only Hope!
The stone was also a sure
foundation.
Paul told Timothy, "Howbeit
the firm foundation of God stand-
eth sure.
The Lord knoweth them that
are His, let everyone that nameth
the name of the Lord Jesus depart
from iniquity."
Remember Peter said, "Ye also

are living stones, built up a spiri-
tual house."
And again Paul tells us 'in
Ephesians that we are no longer
strangers and sojourners, but fel-
low citizens with the saints and
the household of God, built upon
the foundation of Apostles and
Prophets, Jesus Christ, Himself,
being the chief cornerstone.".
All Christians are a part of the
Rock, and the gates of Hades shall
not prevail against it.
I Jesus gives the best plan for
a life when He' tells us in the Ser-
mon on the Mount; "Everyone
that heareth these words of mine,
and doeth them shall be likened
unto a wise man who built his
house upon the rock,
And the floods came, and the
winds blew, and beat upon that
house, and it fell not, for it was
founded upon the rock.
And everyone that heareth
these words of mine and doeth
them not unto a foolish man who
built his house upon the sand.
And the winds came and the
winds blew and beat upon that
house and it fell and great was the
fall thereof."
The Stone is sure, and we are'
sure. We are just as sure as the
Lord is sure! We stand or fall in.
Christ.
Our salvation 'is just as sure
and solid as the Rock of Ages. The
stone is tried, precious, and sure!
Jesus told the chief priest after
the Trimphal Entry that the stone
that the builders rejected, the
same was made the head of the
corner.
Whoever falls on this stone
shall be broken in pieces, and on

whomever it falls it will scatter
him as dust.
Those who are part of the
stone elect and precious are inde-.
structable and those who are not
shall be ground as powder and
scattered as dust.
To' those who are not a part
of the stone, Peter has a word
of warning in the eighth verse of
*First Peter, chapter one.
He refers to the stone of stum-
bling and the rock of offence.
He further states they stumble
at the word.
Many have stumbled over the
Stone made without hands.
To many, that Stone is a rock
of offence.
I know of no place where peo-
ple stumble at the word and trip
over the rock of offence as much
as how to be saved.
Peter said on the day of Pen-
tecost to those who inquired,
"What shall we do?"
"Repent and be baptized every
one of you in the name. of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the.
Holy Spirit."
Luke tells us in Acts the eighth
chapter of an example of how a
baptism was performed.
"They went down into the
water... they came up. out of the
water."
In spite of the clarity of God's
word, many there are who stum-
ble at the word and trip up on the
rock of offence.
"The stone is tried,, precious;
and sure. Jesus said, "Upon this
rock I will build My Church and
the gates of Hades shall not pre-
vail against it."

Don't ask me for a watered-down version

By The Reverend Samuel
S. Thomas, Ph. D.
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
A recent news item on TV
caught my attention when the re-
porter told of the resignation of an
institutional chaplain on the east
coast.
The chaplain felt that she
could not use the words "God" or
"Lord" as the reporter conveyed,
and so she resigned.
The institution sent out two
faxed statements, one from the
President and CEO and the other
from the Senior Chaplain.
The statements had to do with
a "suggestion" to be "inspiration-
al but not religious" at their staff
meetings.
My recollection of the roots of
the word "inspire" is that it comes
from "in-spirited." and that sounds
"religious" enough to me.
Since the institutional staff
was reported to come from vari-
ous backgrounds, it was inferred
that all traditions should be re-
spected.

That struck me as curious.
'Once you're talking about "inspi-
rational" you're off and running.
If you're a' religiously trained
person say a chaplain, that would
likely get you back to things "re-
ligious and not necessarily inspi-
rational."
. It sounds like the job, a chap,
laincy, calls for a religiously trained
person -isn't that what chaplains
are? but you want them to be
"inspirational but not religious."
Wow! I am one of that group
referred to as "clergy." It is a dif-
ferent group than the "laity" and.
involves religious beliefs.
Religion is a part of my iden-
tity; as much as my preference
for certain makes of automobiles,
my favorite foods, my love of ani-
mals, my choice of clothing; in
short it is "me."
I don't parcel out parts of me'
when called upon to do some-
thing. If someone asks me to par-
ticipate in an activity or share in an,
event, it is with the understanding
that those who asked wish me to
offer what I have to contribute.

There's a wonderful world around us.
Full of fascinating places. Interesting
people. Amazing cultures. Important
challenges. But sadly, our kids are
not getting the chance to learn about
their world. When surveys show that
half of America's youth cannot locate
India or Iraq on a map, then we have
to wonder what they do know about
their world. That's why we created
MyWonderfulWorld.org. It's part
of a free National Geographic-ted

of global knowledge. Go there today
and help them succeed tomorrow.

When asked to give an invo-
cation, or benediction, or offer a
prayer, I do so out of the religious
traditions that have helped shape
me and make me the person, and
clergyman, that I am.
People who want "generic"
representations, or sometimes
no representation at all, ask for a
lesser person than I am.
I doubt that they tell their me-
chanics to use monkey wrenches
instead of socket sets or the muf-
fler folks to use a "ne-size-fits-all",
replacement.
Generics are not always the
way to go.
Placing limits on people we
ask to share in special times in
our lives keeps them from be-
ing who they are; and limits an
opportunity to learn something
ourselves (I've learned a lot from
people with whom I disagreed or
didn't particularly like!).
I have refused to take part in an
"ecumenical" marriage because I
was not to wear any distinctive
clergy garb or to comment on
the scriptures I was to read, or to

stand equal or, higher than the
other clergy.
I suggested that what was
sought was a layperson and not
clergy, and didn't see any partici-
pation as "ecumenical" at all.
One principal asked me to
attend a dedication of a new
school.
I asked what I might contribute
but she told me that there would
be no "religious" acts.
I asked about what was being
done to recognize God's place in
the school, and she told me that
they were going to play some
"nice" music.
I didn't attend; I had nothing tq
contribute.
Do I respect other traditions?
Of course!
But I ask that mine is also re-
spected.
In this day and age of erosion
of values (look around you if you
don't believe it!), we all need to
"stand for something lest we fall
for anything."
We're talking about who we
really are all of us!

spond to our Lord, and feel hon-
ored that a gift of mine would be
used to carry Jesus forward to
proclaim the Kingdom and make
a difference in the life of another.
The reality is that all of us have
a donkey.
You and I each have something
in our lives which, if given back to
God, could, like the donkey, move
Jesus and His story further down
the road.
Maybe you could reach out
and help a friend or a neighbor,
or encourage a child.
Maybe you can sing, or hug, or
teach a class, or speak a foreign
language.
Maybe you can give a cold
glass of water to someone who
is thirsty. Maybe you can write a
check.
Whichever, that's your donkey.
Whichever, it could be that God
wants to mount your donkey and
enter into another place, another
situation, another heart.

A Day at the Market
As a culminating activity for their unit of study on economics, second grade students in
Mrs. Marrero's and Mrs. Dixon's classes spent a day at the market putting into practice
what they had learned. The students used math skills to buy and sell products, to compute
their salaries and to make the most of their money. As consumers for a day, it was an en-

Sweet Deception: Youth in the crosshairs, again

Targeting the youth of America
is nothing new for' the tobacco
industry.
Despite industry denials, we
know Big Tobacco has targeted
youth through the use of cartoon
characters, sports sponsorships,
sexy models, and aggressive ad-
vertising campaigns.
Though much of the industry's
strategy to hook young people
revolves around advertising and
promotional activities, new prod-
uct development plays a huge
role in the recruitment of new to-
bacco users.
One of the most significant
developments in recent years has
been the explosion in flavored to-
bacco products,.

The

unaddressed

threat
At virtually every corner con-
venience store and local beverage

stores such as Patson's and Hari's,
a wide array of flavored cigars,
cigarillos, blunt wraps, and spit
tobacco products can be found.
Offerings include a cornuco-
pia of fruity candy flavors such as
grape, peach, apple, watermelon,
pineapple, and strawberry, al-
cohol flavors like apple martini,
rum, and wine, and traditional kid
favorites like chocolate, vanilla,
and honey.
Some of these stores even sell
the hookahs or water pipes that
are becoming increasing popular
with college youth and are fre-
quently used with exotic flavored
tobaccos.
Flavor is an integral part of the
spit tobacco industry's gradua-
tion strategy.
I They use lower nicotine prod-
ucts in familiar, kid-friendly flavors
as starter products for youth.
Youth in internet chat sites are
anticipating spit tobaccos with

new flavors like watermelon.
If you search for "watermelon
Skoal," you will find hits on MyS-
pace, YouTube, and other sites.
The talk is all excitement over
the possibility of a new flavor
coming out.

low-nicotine brands, noted that
"these products have reached
kids four to five years earlier than
we have contacted them in the

dential document from UST.)
Flavor is also playing a role in
new products that are being pro-
moted by the industry.
Most of the emerging trends
in tobacco incorporate the use of

La Florida and the Spanish Expedition of the 1600s

A fruitless journey
for the Spanish as
they pushed to
release those who
had been taken as
slaves

By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum

The sun sank slowly across
the heavens as it followed an age-
less, celestial trail that linked two
worlds; night and day.
Its golden orb radiated, filling
the sky with paschal hues of col-
or, as it paused momentarily on
the fringes of the western horizon
and then disappeared.
Only the red crimson sky be-
trayed its hidden presence as,
nighttime ushered in.
The darkening sky brought
relief to the weary, sun burnt sol-
diers and Indians who had toiled
all day in the hot sun.
Their bodies, arms, and shoul-
ders ached from the listless hours
they had spent paddling in the
cramped, wet quarters of the
dugouts.
Now they steered their canoes
+ to the sandy shoreline, eagerly an-
ticipating a hot meal and rest.
The canoes were beached and
some of the men went in search
of firewood, while others estab-
lish a primitive campsite.
Soon the tantalizing -aroma of
fresh broiled fish and baking oys-
ters filled the cool night air.
Warm, flickering fires and full
stomachs brought rest and clo-
sure to the night as the Spanish
soldiers slumbered off to sleep.
The restless Indians bedded
down, but sleep eluded them.
Cold, clammy droplets of mois-
ture formed on the Tocobago In-
dian's tense bodies as each lay
quietly, reminiscing and cultivat-_
ing an ancient fear, the Calusas.
Tomorrow's journey would

bring the small. expedition into
the land of the powerful Calusa
and the thought of confronting
their dreaded enemy was terrify-
ing.
They knew the horrors that
awaited the man or woman who
fell captive to the Calusa.
A silent, but unspoken signal
passed uncannily through their
ranks.,
All rose together, moving
through the encampment like
shadows in the night.
Ghostly images, void of flesh
and blood, leaving no physical
traces as they stepped soundless
and effortlessly past their Spanish
companions.
They quietly pushed their dug-
outs into the sea's dark canopy
of cover and started paddling re-
lentlessly north, like crazed men
driven by terror.
The ole saying "Ignorance is
Bliss" wasn't embraced by the
Tocobago Indians in this Tall Tale
yarn that took place in 1679.
It is time to take "A Walk in The
Past" and read about a Spanish
expedition in south Florida.
In 1679, Spanish Governor
Pablo Salazar received word that
captive Spaniards were being
held as slaves at the province of
Calus.
His informant was an Indian
chief called Caciqee Medina, who
traded and worked with Indians'
from. the Tocobago Indian Na-'
tion.
The Tocobagos lived in the
Tampa Bay region and were al-
ways feuding with the Calusas.
They probably reported the
Spanish captive's plight to Ca-
siqee Medina for purposes that
went beyond humanitarian rea-
sons.
The Calusa Indian Nation was
an ancient enemy that the Toco-
bago fought, hated and feared.
What better way to play two
superpowers in Florida, the Span-
ish against the Calusa.
The Spanish captive incident

only confirmed all was not well
on the Calusa frontier.
Information concerning Calu-
sa hostilities wasn't new to Gov-
ernor Salazar.
'In a letter written in 1675, to
the crown, Governor Salazar de-
scribes the Calusas as the most
warlike and troublesome Indians
in Florida.
He wrote that they killed ship-
wreck survivors and Indians,
whose nations were under Span-
ish protection.
Earlier Spanish letters report
that a truce was established in
1612, between the Spaniards and
Calusas.
The truce lasted at least until
1634, because a letter written by
a priest in the same year indicated
the Spaniards and Calusas were
still on peaceful terms.
Calusa hostilities would have
occurred after 1634.
There are no recorded instanc-
es of Spanish slavers or European
diseases in South Florida that
could have fueled hostilities dur-
ing this time, so what happened?
The problem may have
stemmed simply from "The
changing of the guards," when a
new Calusa Casiqee took power.
A new ruler may have exer-
cised a different political agenda,
one that was fiercely patriotic and
traditional.
Historians will probably never
know what really reignited the
Calusa hostilities.
The 1679 report on Spanish
Captives spurred Governor Sala-
zar to act.
He created a small expedition
under the joint command of Juan
Cruz and Casiqee Medina.
They were to negotiate and
ransom the Spanish captives from
the Calusas.
The expedition consisted of
Spanish soldiers and Indian war-
riors.
Traveling by canoes, the expe-
dition traveled down the Appala-
chia River to the Gulf of Mexico,

then southward along the west
coast of Florida to Tampa Bay.
The expedition stopped at a
village along the way called Al-
cola; it had a population of 300
persons.
They rested and continued
south, stopping at another village
called Pojoi that had up to 300
people.
The chief of the village begged
the soldiers not to continue south
because the Calusa would view
his village with .contempt for not
attacking the soldiers.
The chief said the Calusa
would bring severe reprisals
against his people.
The expedition disregarded
the chief's request and continued
south.
Other village chiefs appealed
to the Spanish expedition, beg-
ging them to turn back for fear
of retaliatory acts against their vil-
lages by the Calusa.
The villager's fear of the Calu-
sas rubbed off on the expedition
because all the Indian warriors
traveling with the expedition fled
into the night, abandoning the
group.
The small force of Spanish
soldiers was ill equipped to face
a large Calusa force, so they re-
turned to north Florida without
the Spanish captives.
Governor Salazar was updated
by the expedition's leaders and
reacted in a strange way.
He wrote a letter to the crown
in 1680, and suggested missions
be established in the Calusa In-
dian Nation.
We will never know what his
intentions or expectations were in
writing such a letter.
There was a war going on in
South Florida, and he was asking
for missions!
There will be more "Tale Tales"
in next week's edition "A Walk in
The Past," when the Spanish at-
tempt to establish a mission in
the Calusa Indian Nation.

Kidneys: We're not talking beans

Understanding the
effects of unchecked
kidney diseases;
finding help before
it's too late

By Pat Dobbins, R.N.,
M.S./H.SA.'
Administrator
Kidneys play a very impor-
tant role in a person's overall
health.
Your kidneys help keep the
right amount of water in the
body and help to filter out harm-
ful wastes.
Common causes of kidney
disease are diabetes and high
blood pressure.
Chronic kidney disease is
when a person loses kidney func-
tions, which can happen from
physical injuries or diseases that

damage the kidneys (diabetes or
high blood pressure).
When the kidneys are dam-
aged, it reduces their ability to
remove wastes and extra water

from the blood as well as
they should.
Chronic kidney disease
is a silent condition and in
the early stages, you may
not notice any symptoms.
Chronic kidney disease
often develops so slowly
that many people don't re-
alize they're sick until the
disease is advanced.
According to the Cen-
ters for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), an
estimated 26 million adults
in the United States have
chronic kidney disease, but
most do not know it and it's
hoto the ninth leading cause of
death" in the United States.
The final stage of chron-
ic kidney disease requires
the person to be on kidney dialy-
sis (filtering of blood through a
machine) or transplantation.
The risk for kidney disease

can be reduced by learning how
to prevent diabetes and high
blood pressure.
Bladder infections can also
damage your kidneys.
Some symptoms of blad-
der infection include cloudy or
bloody urine, pain or burning
when you urinate, or an urgent
need to urinate often.
The symptoms of a kidney
infection may include back pain,
chills, and fever.
Please talk to your healthcare
provider if you think you may
have a bladder or kidney infec-
tion.
Also, please be sure to get
your blood pressure and blood
sugar levels checked regularly!

Port
Continued From Page 1
the Port and the community.
"It's all about jobs and eco-
nomic development for the Lake
region. That's all we're about.
It's not a port project; it's a job's
project. It's a one stop-shop that
we think will provide a lot of the
economic solutions for this area,"
Oppel said.
By 2015, there will be a de-
mand for 40-80 million square
feet of additional distribution
space in South Florida alone, ac-
cording to a Martin and Associ-
ates Market Assessment Analysis.
The feasibility study determined
that 1 million square feet of space
employs approximately 300-900

individuals depending upon the
level of automation of the center.
Those in attendance gasped
when Manuel Almira, executive
director of the Port of Palm Beach,
explained that if the inland logis-
tics complex is 40 million square
feet and has 500 employees per 1
million square feet there would
be 20,000 new jobs created for
this area. This number does not
include possible jobs that are in-
directly associated with the com-
plex, such as restaurants.
On May 1, the Port of Palm
Beach will be accepting requests
for qualifications from businesses
or parties interested in selling
their land for the site location. By
Aug. 1, the Port will have selected
site location finalists and will ex-
tend invitations to negotiate. Also,
the Port wants to develop a public

private partnership .that includes
private sector financing and a
minimal amount of public funds
to develop this project, according
to Oppel.
Questions were raised con-
cerning the necessary training
area residents would need to
qualify for the variety of jobs at
the center. Oppel assured the
audience members that Port
authorities would partner with
workforce development to offer
proper training.
"As long as we keep it within
the Lake Region, no one will be
a loser. Everyone will be able to
take advantage of the jobs offered
through this inland logistics cen-
ter," Oppel said.
Palm Beach County Commis-
sioners have shown their com-
mitmentto bringing the inland lo-

gistics center to the tri-cities area
as well. In Sept. 2008, the Palm
Beach County Commissioners
voted to endorse a plan for the fu-
ture development of the complex
along U.S. 27. Commissioners felt
it was in the best interest of the
county to officially support the
center since Hendry and Martin
Counties were also vying for the
location site. Commissioner Jess
Santamaria of District 6, which in-
cludes Belle Glade, Pahokee, and
South Bay, opposed the plan leav-
ing many local residents confused
and disappointed.
After Friday's meeting in South
Bay, Commissioner Santamaria
clarified his Sept. vote.
"Although I was made to be
the bad guy because I was made
to appear as if I did not want the
inland port here, it was the con-

trary. I want the inland port to
be anywhere in the Glades. But
by limiting it to a small area and
increasing the value of that land,
there is a possibility that it may
end up somewhere else, outside
of the Glades, where the land
values are lower. I was really for
the inland port, but some people
tried to make it appear that I was
against it," Santamaria explained.
While the inland logistics com-
plex still faces many unknowns,
one thing is clear: the absolute
agreement that the complex
should be built in the tri-cities
area.
"The inland port has to be in
the Glades area. Jobs is exactly
what this area needs. It's the one
thing that will change the entire
face of the Glades. It will make
the Glades what it should have

been a long time ago," Commis-
sioner Santamaria said.

but I know he went somewhere
and that's all that matters," Cham-

It's possible that the defendant

PBSO Captain leaves Belle Glade

Barnes served three
years in District 13

By Naji Tobias
The Sun
GLADES A familiar face with
the Palm Beach County Sheriff's
Office (PBSO) has moved on.
CaptainSimon Barnes IV spent
his final day in District 13-Belle
Glade on Sunday, making way for
his replacement.
As of Monday, the new captain
of District 13 is Andrew Dilardello,
who Barnes was a lieutenant un-
der when the transition period
from the Belle Glade Police to the
PBSO began back in 2000.
Obviously, the citizens of Belle
Glade won't have to worry about'
getting acquainted with a totally
new face, since Dilardello played
a role in the transition, which was
completed in 2006.
Barnes, who spent nearly three
years as the District 13 captain,
began serving in the role on July
12, 2006 the day that the merger
between the Belle Glade Police
and the PBSO was complete.
Barnes, who believes that Di-
lardello will continue what he
helped establish with the city's
residents, will be remembered
by many for his professionalism
and his courteous manner to. the
citizenry.
"I will miss the city of Belle
Glade, especially those citizens
who have cooperated and tried
to work with law enforcement
to protect their children and
make their neighborhoods safer,"
Barnes said.
One thing that Barnes, 45,
championed was the develop-
ment of a positive relationship be-
tween law enforcement and the
community. Realizing that it has
been a challenge to accomplish

that. all-important feat, Barnes
made it his priority to work closely
with the Glades Pastoral/Ministe-
rial Association, which consists of
the area's clergymen and clergy-
women. He even went out of his
way to spend time with residents
after each Belle Glade commis-
sion meeting he sat in, even if it
ended past 10 p.m., which hap-
pened quite a few times.
"It was a pleasure to spend
time with the residents and even
go to their homes in reference
to whatever concerns they had,"
Barnes said of the city's citizens.
"I enjoyed taking my time out
to visit business owners and their
businesses to address their con-
cerns, as well."
Another thing Barnes was
proud of in his time here was the
formation of the Citizen Observer
Patrol (COP), which consists of
volunteers who serve as the eyes
and ears of the sheriff's office.
"The COP volunteers have un-
selfishly attempted to help their
communities, sometimes under
the ridicule of other community
members," Barnes said. "But their
guiding force is that of giving back
to the community," he continued.
"For that, we are greatly thankful
for the many hours of time they
volunteered to us."
A product of Delray Beach, the
,24-year PBSO veteran has, unfor-
tunately, had to deal with a host
of crimes committed in his time
here. With shooting deaths on the
rise, highlighted by last year's slay-
ing of Pahokee Blue Devils football.
player Norman Griffith, among
many others, Barnes recognizes
that through it all, it is essential as
a law enforcement officer to keep
a level head regardless of whatev-
er circumstances may occur. The
way that Barnes handled all these
latest crimes, including a slew of

recent robberies and burglaries,
will be what he'll likely be most
remembered for.
"Growing up as a kid in Del-
ray, I used to see these crimes a
lot firsthand," Barnes said, not-
ing that seeing children killed by
stray bullets and in automobile
accidents were among the most
tragic things he's ever witnessed.
"This job makes you grow up
quick and allows you to mature
faster," he continued. "I've seen
some things that I hope the citi-
zens never have to either witness
or be a victim of."
As Barnes moves on to serve
as the PBSO Command Duty
Officer for all 14 PBSO districts
throughout Palm Beach County'
he'll be with the Patrol Opera-
tions Division, based in West Palm
Beach one thing that will make
him somewhat proud of is when
the Fla. Department of Law En-
forcement (FDLE) results come
out next month. Preliminary re-
ports, according to Barnes, indi-
cate a decrease in robberies and
burglaries, though he expects to
see an increase in shootings for
Belle Glade, particularly when it
involves victims being hit.
Going into the future, Barnes
believes that the citizenry will
help determine how crime will
be addressed.
"It all depends on how the
citizens interact with law enforce-
ment," he says. "I want to see
more community involvement
with the sheriff's office, as well
as a increase of participation in
crime prevention programs,"
"If the citizens don't come for-
ward, the message they are send-
ing is that crime in the area is be-
ing tolerated," Barnes continued.
"Without the partnership, the
criminals will be free to do what-
ever they want."

Belle Glade teenager shot dead

By Naji Tobias
The Sun
BELLE GLADE A teenage boy
fell to his death in the night hours
of Monday, Mar. 23.
According to the Palm Beach
County Sheriff's Office (PBSO), at
approximately 10 p.m., the victim,
Willie J. Thomas, was found dead
by deputies in the area of 190 S.
W. 16th St. (State Road 715).
The location of the shooting,
according to authorities, was
found to be the victim's resi-
dence. It was revealed that the 15-
year-old suffered a fatal gunshot
wound from his torso area.

Not long after the shooting
was confirmed, investigators re-
portedly canvassed the area, seek-
ing for information from nearby
residents. Authorities later inter-
viewed a host of individuals, who
reportedly stated that the victim
and a friend of his had walked out
of a trailer prior to the incident.
Detectives discovered, through
the witness interviews, that the
friends observed an unidentified
man firing shots at them.
As the unknown suspect re-
portedly fled by foot after shoot-
ing at the friends, the victim,
meanwhile, went back to the

shooting scene after realizing that
it was hit. Paramedics from the
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue
assisted with the sheriff's office
with the incident findings, as they
pronouncing the victim dead on
the scene.
Detectives are still conduct-
ing interviews with residents on
the shooting details, as there has
been no suspects identified at this
point.
The Palm Beach County Vio-
lent Crimes Task Force has adopt-
ed the shooting case, as the inci-
dent is still under investigation.
