Harris arrested on election day

Richard Harris
arrested for
alleged threats

By Naji Tobias
The Sun
GLADES The end result of
this year's municipal election
was nothing short of dramatic,
to say the least.
Over in Belle Glade, Mary
Wilkerson, as expected, eas-
ily defeated Reverend J. R. Har-
ris for Seat D, vacated by Shelly

Miller.
Wilkerson, who last served
on the city's commission from

1999-2000, capturing a whop-
ping 80 percent of the popula-
tion with 1,153 votes.
Harris, who was soundly
defeated by Michael Martin last
year, secured just 291 votes,
which is equivalent to 20 percent
of the residents who took part in
these elections.
The defeat margin may have
played a role in what happened
to Harris at about 6 p.m., just
one hour before the polls closed
at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
Harris has been implicated
by the Palm Beach County Sher-
iff's Office (PBSO) for allegedly

accident

WESTERN PALM BEACH
COUNTY On Friday, March 6,
2009, at 5:20 am, crews from
Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue
Stations 73 and 74 responded
to a report of. a vehicle crash
near the Okeelanta Sugar Mill
on U.S. 27, several miles south
of South Bay.
Crews arrived to find two
semi-trailers that had collided,
both having severe damage.
The driver of one of the trucks
was ejected and had died from

his injuries on the scene.
The three occupants of the
other truck were treated on
scene and released.
The driver of the first vehicle
is identified as Raul Tinoco, 54,
of Miami. Tinoco did not sur-
vive his injuries.
The driver of the second ve-
hicle was Jose L. Moraga, 37, of
Hialeah.
Moraga suffered only minor
injuries as a result of the acci-
dent.,
According to the report, both
semis were traveling north on
U.S. 27 when one of the drivers
made a wide turn into a narrow
bridge.
That driver failed to see the

semi approaching from behind
and was struck.
The other driver attempted
to stop the semi, applying the
brakes, but was unable to avoid
the collision.

on Saturday

Event to last from 9
a.m. until 9 p.m. in
Pahokee

By Naji Tobias
The Sun
PAHOKEE Larry Wright, a
longtime area resident, is cau-
tious about the Relay For Life
event this weekend.,
With the economy in a se-
rious recession and criminal
activity on a significant rise,
Wright felt that change was
necessary..
' For the past few years with
the last two Relay For Life events
in Pahokee the occasion has
been held on a Friday night into

a Saturday morning.
It won't be happening this
year.
Wright hasn't commented
on future events, but given the
fact there's a likelihood that the
current negative trends won't
change anytime soon, the pos-
sibility of Relay For Life occur-
ring in the daytime permanent-
ly seems like a realistic bet.
Relay For Life, hosted by the
American Cancer Society, will
be located at the Pahokee Rec-
reational Center Complex for
the second consecutive year.
This year's event will be
held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on
Saturday, Mar. 14-just Iwo days -
from now.

Moore Haven track strives for strong season Glades

Moore Haven has a
home meet today at
3:30 p.m.

By Naji Tobias
INI Florida
MOORE HAVEN It's safe to
say that this year's track program
is in the mix.
The application fits the Moore
Haven Terriers boys and girls
teams in more ways than one.
Fresh off last year's stellar ap-
pearance in the Class IA state
track championships Antwonne
McCloud brought home state
gold in the high jump at 6-0 the
Terriers are gunning to be in peak
condition as the season rolls on.
What's interesting about this
season is that there's a healthy
combination of youth and experi-
ence.
Not only that, but a host of
them more than excel at what
they do; particularly the seventh
and eighth graders.
Steve Petti, in his 18th sea-
son as the track program's head
coach, is very pleased with what
he sees thus far.
With two meets already in
the books a Feb. 27 meet at St.
John Neumann and a Mar. 3 meet
at Lake Placid Petti was able to.
see some potential in many of his
athletes.
As a team, the boys won both
meets in overall points, according
to Petti.
The girls placed second over-
all as a unit at St. John Neumann,
while placing fourth in Lake Plac-
id.
At the St. John Neumann meet,
seven schools, including Moore
Haven participated.
The teams at their meet were
St. John Neumann, Canterbury,
Community School of Port Char-
lotte, Evangelical Christian, Com-
munity School of Naples and
Seacrest (Naples).
For the boys, senior Xavier
Fagan won the 400 meter race
(53.48 seconds) and placed third
in the long jump (19-4 1/4).
Elazarus Blackmon, possibly
Moore Haven's best overall track
athlete, garnered a personal-best
100 meter time of 10.98 as he
grabbed the win.
Blackmon, who also won the
long jump event at 20-1/2, helped
lead his 4 x 100 relay team to
victory with a time of 44.88 sec-
- onds.
The 4 X 100 relay consists of
Blackmon, Fagan, sophomore.
Keivon Bell and junior Josh Pat-
terson.
As for Patterson, he won. the
high jump (5-10) and finished
as the runner-up in the 100 me-
ter race to Blackmon (11.18 sec-
onds).
Bell placed third in the 400
(54.40), while finishing second in
the triple jump (39-6).
Lascelle Humphrey, .a ju-
nior, won the 110 meter hurdles
(16.87) and the 300 meter hurdles
(41.61) at St. John Neumann.
Saul Leon, an up-and-coming
eighth grader, won the I mile race
(5:22) and placed third in the 2

INI/Naji la oas
At last year's Moore Haven Invitational, Elazarus Blackmort won the 100 meter event with a time of 11.16 seconds. Glades
Day's Anthony Norton and Earnest Jackson finished second and forth with times of 11.37 and 11.41 seconds, respectively,
while Moore Haven's Joshua Patterson and Antwon McCloude finished with times of 11.38 and 11.65 seconds, respec-
tively.

mile race (12:02).
Petti is particularly pleased
with Leon's progress, noting that
he can become a formidable run-
ner once the district champion-
ships come around:
"Saul is just an eight-grader
and he's holding his own against
high school kids," Petti said of
Leon.
"He's doing real well for us
right now," he continued.
"If he stays with it as he gets
older, then he'll become a top dis-
tance runner down the line."
Overall, 14 of the 22 boys
scored points for Moore Haven in
the St. John Neumann meet, pro-
pelling.them to victory.
On the girls side, Cortasia Ford,
a senior, won the shot put (29-1),
while placing third in the 400 me-
ter race.
Tierra Perkins, also a senior,
finished fourth in the 100 at St.
John Neumann (13.3 seconds).
Other notables at St. John
Neumann meet:
Rebecca Langdale (junior): 1st
in 110.hurdles (21.46), 4th in 330
meter hurdles (60 seconds), 4th
in triple jump at SJM
Kaneidra McPherson (eighth
grade): lst.in long jump (16-10),
3rd in 100 meters (13.05)
Viviana Leon (seventh grade):
2nd in 1 mile (6:30), 4th in 2 mile
(13:31)
Kourtney Jimenez (eighth
grade): 3rd in 1 mile (6:35), 3rd in
2 mile (13:26)
Seven of the 11 girls for Moore
Haven scored points at the St.
John Neumann meet.
The Lake Placid meet was
somewhat of a different story,
however.
With temperatures hovering
around a breezy 40 degrees in
Lake Placid, the teams didn't do
as well'.
But Petti wasn't at all discour-
aged, as he realizes that it was just
the second meet of the season.
"The times were definitely off,"
Petti said about the Lake Placid
meet, who featured teams such
as Lake Placid, Sebring Avon Park

and LaBelle.
With that being said, Petti is
highly confident going into to-
day's meet, which will be. held at.
Terrier Field in Moore Haven.
"It's clearly going to be a team
effort this year," Petti said of his
program.
In last season's home meet,
Moore Haven's boys team was
edged out by Glades Day, while
the girls won the event with rela-
tive ease.
For the girls last year, Venisha
Lewis, a five-time MVP and cur-
rently one of the assistants, won
the 100 meter race at 12.3 sec-
onds, easily besting the field.
On the boys end, it was a four-
man show, with Elazarus Black-
mon winning the event with a
time of 11.16 seconds.
The favorites going into the
meet Glades Day's Anthony Nor-
ton and Earnest Jackson, finished
second and forth, with times of
11.37 and 11.41 seconds, respec-
tively.
Patterson edged out Jackson
for third place with a time of
11.38 seconds at the Moore Ha-
ven Invitational, which took place
last March.
This year's meet looks to be
different, as two stars from Glades.
Day seek to make a lasting im-
pression in Glades County.
Joshua Thornton, a rising
track phenom who has already
received a scholarship letter from
Navy, is aiming at a win in the 400
meter race.
As a freshman, Thornton
was nothing short of impressive,
highlighted by his fourth-place
finish in the Class IA state track
championships last year (50.60
seconds).
For any of Moore Haven's 400
meter runners to catch Thornton
(Fagan and Bell, especially), they
may have to clock in at 50 sec-
onds or less to win the event.
Kelvin Taylor, the son of NFL
running back Fred Taylor, is slated
to compete in the 100 meter race,
as well as Glades Day's 4 X 100
team, which edged out Moore

Haven's foursome last year.
After today's meet, Moore
Haven will have a few left, most
notably the April 3 meet at Char-
lotte.
Petti will clearly know where
his team stands after that event,
with schools from Class 1A to
Class 4A expected to show up
there.
"We like to compete against
bigger schools because it will
help us prepare to peak at the
right time," Petti.
The right time, as Petti care-
fully says, is in the Class IA Dis-
trict Championships, which will
be held on April 17 at St. John
Neumann.
Petti on the program's chances
of making a statement in the post-
season:
"We have decent, young kids
coming up," he said.
"I like what I'm seeing right
now from them.
"We have a really good nucle-
us of experienced runners, with
a young group of distance run-
ners," Petti continued.
"If they continue to work hard
and stay focused, then everything
will be fine."
As for the possibility of Moore
Haven winning the Class 1A state
track championships:
"We'll just focus on one meet
at a time, getting better and peak-
ing at the right time," Petti said.

staff raise

$30,000
The employees of Glades Gen-

thing extraordinary for the health
of the Palm Beach County com-
munity. Together they have raised
$30,000 towards the construction
of the new Lakeside Medical Cen-
ter in Belle Glade, Palm Beach
County's only public hospital.
This incredible gift resulted
from a weekly fund raising break-
fast where employees donated
funds and the managers donat-
ed their time to serve their col-
leagues.
They presented their gift on
February 26th to Glades Health-
care Foundation, the organization
raising funds for the hospital cam-
paign.
David Goodlett, chair of
Glades Healthcare Foundation,
was on hand to thank employees
personally, and showed the orga-
nization's appreciation by hand-
ing out prizes and give-aways for
employees, including a $250 Best
Buy gift certificate, Universal Stu-
dio passes, a stay at the Jupiter
Waterfront Inn, an afghan cro-
cheted and donated by Dr. Effie
Grear and over 150 gift certificates
to Popeyes and.Smokey Bones.
All prizes were donated.
Glades General Hospital board
members who were in atten-
dance included board chair Bryan
Cross, Dr. Effie Grear and Dr. Don-
ald Fliehs.
New Glades General Hospital
administrator, Brian Gibbons also
attended and thanked employees
for their incredible generosity.
The GGH employee gift will be

history. Brian Gibbons is in many
ways uniquely qualified to lead

this critical transition to a facility
that is going to have a huge posi-
tive impact on the health as well
as the economy of this economi-
cally vital region of Florida," said
Health Care District Board Chair
Jonathan R. Satter.
Health. Care District Chief Ex-

ette added, "With his nearly
twenty years of hospital experi-
ence, Brian brings an invaluable
background in rural healthcare

Gibbons was Chief Operating Of-
ficer of the Sebastian River Medi-
cal Center, an 86-bed acute care
facility in Sebastian, Florida.
.From 2003 to 2007 he held
executive-level positions at East-
ern New Mexico Medical Center
in Roswell, New Mexico and Alta
Vista Regional Hospital in Las Ve-
gas, New Mexico where he built

community support, increased
admissions and improved the
hospital's financial performance.
Earlier he worked in a variety of
administrative positions at Mun-
roe Regional Medical Center in
Ocala, Treasure Coast Rehabilita-
tion Hospital in Vero Beach, and
Cape Canaveral Hospital. Mr.
Gibbons' background includes
development oversight of various
hospital construction projects
including a unique off-site Emer-
gency Department.
"I am very impressed with the
dedication of the staff at Glades
General Hospital," said Mr. Gib-
bons.
"In addition to advanced
technology and modern facili-
ties, Lakeside Medical Center will
feature a veteran team that takes
pride in caring for this commu-
nity."

HIV/AIDS-It could be closer

to home than you think

Not underestimating
the severity of the
disease
By Pat Dobbins, R.N.,
M.S./H.SA.
Administrator
HIV/AIDS is a scary topic, but
one that needs to be discussed.
In Florida, women account for
34% of AIDS cases and 29% of
HIV cases that were reported in
2007.
It may be surprising, but most
cases of HIV/AIDS are from the
results of sexual relations be-
tween men and women.
Even though there has been
progress in fighting HIV in Flor-
ida, there is still an unacceptable
rate of women being infected.
Some people may think that
only homosexuals, drug. users,
those with lower financial status.

or lower education levels are the
people who end up getting in-
fected.
This is simply not true.
Anyone that chooses to have
unprotected sexual activity puts
themselves at risk of infection.
Also the sharing of injection
needles (which can include tat-
tooing and piercing, not just drug
use) are also factors that could
increase your risk of infection.
Spring Break is upon us once
again, and I urge all of the col-
lege 'students to please think
about the choices you make.
The Florida Department of
Health recognized March 10 as
National Women and Girls HIV/
AIDS Awareness Day, and in
support of that, the Hendry and
Glades County Health Depart-
ments offered free testing.
Women of all ages need to
empower each other and en-
courage each other to get tested.

The AIDS epidemic is now
27 years old, but we still have to
remind folks that "it only takes
one time" to get infected. If you
would like more information on
HIV/AIDS awareness, please con-
tact the Hendry County Health
Department at 863-674-4041 -
LaBelle, 863-983-1408 Clewis-
ton or the Glades County Health
Department at 863-946-0707.

trator for the Hendry and Glades

Letters to the Editor

Big things
Dear Editor,
Big things are going on in the
City of Belle Glade and I am happy
to give the citizens an update. First
and foremost, on March 4, 2009,
several elected Glades leaders
and I will be meeting with Gover-
nor Crist to discuss several impor-
tant issues and matters that cur-
rently impact the Glades Region.
We will be seeking a partnership
with the State for resolving some
of the problems impacting our
area. During this trip to Tallahas-
seer, our City Manager will be
meeting with the Director of the
Office of Tourism, Trade and Eco-
nomic Development (OTTED)
to discuss the acquisition of 600
acres of land for the continuation
of our Business Park. However,
this is just the tip of the iceberg, I
would like to offer a summary of
some other endeavors currently
in process at this time.
The City has recently applied
for over 17 million dollars under
the Federal Stimulus Program re-
cently passed by Congress. The
proposal constitutes five projects
including a new city hall and
community center. We believe
our chances to receive funding
for the complete reconstruction
(stormwater, curb and gutters &
sidewalks) of S.E. 3rd Street are
outstanding as this project has
already made the short list of the
Palm Beach MPO.
Palm Beach County and the

three cities of the Glades are cur-
rently working on the details to
-merge all of their respective utility
systems into one governmental
entity to be called the Glades Util-
ity Authority (GUA). The overall
effect of this merger will be to
deliver more efficient and better
quality services, reduce the debt
currently serviced by the three cit-
ies and provide the financial capi-
tal to continue the upgrading and
maintenance of the present utility
systems.
The City is currently in the
process of designing a boat lock
structure that would provide boat
traffic between the Lake Okeecho-
bee and the Hillsboro and New
River Canals. This initiative was
made possible through a OTTED
grant of 1.5 million dollars. The
City is also currently working with
United States Army Corps of Engi-
neers and the South Florida Water
Management District, to continue
moving this project forward. We
believe this project is one of the
more important efforts that the
City is implementing from an eco-
nomic development standpoint.
A New Developer has recently
expressed an interest in annexing
'approximately 850 acres into the
City for a high quality mixed-use
development to include: Residen-
tial (single and multi- family and
condominium units); Commer-
cial including a Condo/Hotel; and
Marina/ Boat Storage. Our Staff is
currently working with the Plan-
ning Staff of Palm Beach County

to develop and complete the In-
terlocal Service Boundary Agree-
ment (ISBA) which is the first step
in bringing this development to
fruition.
The City continues to make
progress in the development of
it's Youth Empowerment Pro-
gram. Palm Beach County is cur-
rently preparing the site at 227
S.W. 6th Street for the placement
of a modular building that will
serve as the permanent site for
the Belle Glade Youth Empower-
ment Center. Belle
Glade is very excited about this
program and what it will mean to
the youth of our City.
The City continues to explore
every option to secure grants
that will offer opportunities to
improve service delivery- within
the City.. The City was awarded
$349,000 to operate a local transit
service route that would provide
citizens with an accessible mode
of transportation, acknowledging
that to
support local revitalization ef-
forts, the City should implement
local transit. In the near future,
City Staff will begin holding Town
Hall meetings to review the pro-
posed transit routes and gain in-
put .from citizens regarding rider-
ship and service needs. Our Staff
is also working with the Florida
Department of
Transportation and the FAA to
obtain funding for a Master Plan
and other Physical improvements
to the Airport. At this time, the City

is scheduled to receive $1,055,000
over the next three years between
the two agencies.
Finally, let me assure the citi-
zens of Belle Glade that your City
Government continues to moni-
tor two of the biggest issues to
confront the Glades. The first is
South Florida Water Management
District's proposed acquisition of
the U. S. Sugar Corporation. Our
Staff continues to stay abreast of
latest developments and the Belle
Glade .City Commission will be
taking up the issue of engaging a
lobbyist to protect the City's inr
terest. Maybe the most important
short term issue is the future se-
lection of a location of the inland
port by the Port of Palm Beach.
We believe the inland port should
be located at the Okeelanta site
near South Bay. We support all of
the efforts of Palm Beach County
to implement a
land use overlay that will as-
sist in making this site the final
and most attractive choice for the
port. We continue to practice due
diligence to ensure that we have
a "seat at the table" and to have
"our say" so that this vital project
comes to the Glades and provides
the employment that this area
needs.
So my friends, as I stated to
start this article, indeed, big things
are happening in Belle Glade.
Sincerely,
Steve Wilson,
Belle Glade mayor

Wildfire danger
increasing

Tallahassee Florida is experi-
encing twice the wildfire activity
of a year ago and the danger is
increasing every day, Florida Ag-
riculture and Consumer Services
Commissioner Charles H. Bron-
son said today.
Bronson is urging residents to
do their part to prevent wildfires
by avoiding any unnecessary out-
door burning. They should also
check with their local Division of
Forestry office or county govern-
ment to determine if there is a lo-
cal burn ban in effect.
"Prevention is the key," Bron-
son said. "We're asking residents
and visitors alike to exercise ex-
treme caution when you use
anything that involves fire or high
heat. Before conducting any out-
door burning, check with officials
to see if it is a dangerous burning
day and if there is a local burn
ban in effect."
A lack of substantial rainfall,
especially in Central and South
Florida, coupled with recent
freezes throughout the state, has
left Florida's vegetation ripe for
wildfires. Wildfires can start eas-
ily, intensify quickly and move
rapidly because of the current
conditions.
Statewide, the Keetch-Byram
Drought Index (KBDI) currently
stands at 520, well above normal
for this time of the year. More-

over, the. Index shows that nearly
half of Florida is well above the
statewide average and is experi-
encing "severe" dry conditions.
The KBDI measures available soil
moisture and runs from 0 (satu-
rated) to 800 (desert-like).
Since January 1, Florida has
had 1,024 wildfires that have
burned 24,730 acres compared
with 508 fires impacting 11,292
acres at the same time last year.
Because the lightening season
has yet to begin, virtually all of
the fires that have occurred to
date were caused by humans and

readers are familiar with the Ato-
cha; it is the famous treasure ship
that Mel Fisher spent much of his
adulthood life searching for. The
Atocha was discovered by Mel
Fisher's son in 1985. It yielded
hundreds of millions in emeralds,
gold and silver to Mel and his
business partners.
The 1622, document states that
the Indians living in the keys were
hired as divers to help recover the
Spanish Platte Fleets sunken trea-
sures. Caribbean Indians were
known for their diving skills. The
Indian divers were aided, in their
deep water dives to depths 'of 60
feet with a heavy stone attached
to a rope. Our ole friend Fontana-
do wrote in his journals about the
diving exploits of the Calusa and
Tequesta Indians, who lived in
the Keys, validating that the Key
Indians were up to the salvaging
task.
In 1623, another Spanish Platte
fleet sank off the Treasure Coast
around present day Ft. Pierce.
The Florida governor Salinas re-
marked in a 1623 letter that the
Ais and Jeaga Indians living in
that area usually killed all ship-
wreck survivors. He reported that
punitive steps were taken against
the Indians, and a truce was es-
tablished. This truce would save
English lives years later, when an
English merchant ship wrecked
on the shores of the Ais Indian
Nation.
Jonathan Dickinson, an Eng-
lish Quaker merchant, was ship-
wrecked close to the present day
Jupiter Inlet. Mr. Dickinson wrote
that the Indians were fearful of the
Spanish. He mentions repeatedly
that the Indians were constantly
asking him if he was a Nickaleer,
which meant English. Theywant-
ed to known if his nationality was
English, so they could kill him and
his fellow castaways without fear
of retaliation from the Spanish.
Mr. Dickinson and his fellow cast-
aways abandoned their Quaker
virtues and told little, white lies,
declaring they were Spanish.
A friar's brief comments
around 1634, referred to contact
with the Calusa as a result of the
salvage operations in 1622. He
stated that "the Calusa would re-
ceive evangelical preachers with
great pleasure." This is our last
report on south west Florida until
1675. Misplaced documents re-
porting Spanish activities in south
Florida from 1634 to 1674, are
hopefully waiting to be disclosed
in Havana, Cuba or Seville, Spain,
only time will tell.
There will be more "Tale Tales"
in next week's edition "A Walk in
The Past,"
when the Spanish return to
south Florida in the late 1600s.
I hope you have enjoyed this story.

About Abdominal Hernias

By Dr. Darayes
Mobed, General
Surgeon
Hendry Regional Medical
Center
In my last article,- we dis-
cussed the inguinal hernia,
which is in the groin area and
is more likely to be found in
men than women.
However, the abdominal
hernia is a generic term that
covers many types of hernias
such as the inguinal hernia,
ventral hernia, and the um-
bilical hernia.
Abdominal hernias are
tears in the wall of the abdo-
men, which allow internal
body'parts to move into areas
where they do not belong.

What causes an

Abdominal Hernia?
Most hernias develop in
weak spots of the abdominal
wall.
Hernias may be present
at birth or develop over time.
Overweight individu-
als tend to suffer more with
hernias than those without
added weight.
Genetics, a person's fam-
ily history, can also play a sig-
nificant role in whether one
develops or has a hernia.
*Additionally, lifting heavy
objects may cause a tear or
weakening of the abdomen.
Coughing or even strain-
ing while using the bathroom
can cause a hernia.
*Hernias can develop at
a point of previous surgical
procedure.
*Or aging can be a factor.

What to watch for.
Often people are not aware
they have a hernia; there is no
pain or discomfort. In these
cases, a hernia can be found
through a swelling or when
an internal organ protrudes
through the abdominal open-
ing.
Some individuals can push

the organ back into place,
without any severe pain. In
other instances, people may
experience severe pain and
may not be able to return the
organ to its original position.

When to contact

your doctor.
If you feel that you have a
hernia, contact your doctor
immediately.
If there is a bulge in your
abdomen that becomes larg-
er, discolored, painful, or if
you are experiencing a fever
or vomiting, it is important
to contact a medical profes-
sional with the following in-
formation:
*Where the bulge is lo-
cated,
*When you first noticed
the bulge,
Is it always visible, or
does it go away?
*What is the size of the
bulge? Attempt to measure
the diameter or compare to
another object.
*Is there anything that
makes the bulge appear larg-
er or possibly go away?
*Are there other symp-
toms that you have?

What if surgery is

required?
Once an abdominal hernia
occurs, it tends to increase in
size.
Initially, some individuals
choose to keep the abdomi-
nal hernia under control with
a truss.
A truss is a support gar-
ment that is worn like a belt
and keeps the hernia from
protruding.
Ultimately, the only cure
for an abdominal hernia is
surgery.
For most abdominal herni-
as, there are two types of sur-
geries that may be performed
and are relatively simple.
If the hernia is small with
limited pain or discomfort,
4

the protruding materials can
be returned to their normal
location; a few stitches will
be made in the wall of the ab-
domen, closing the tear.
In instances where the tear
is too large or the area too
weakened, the surgeon will
place a synthetic patch on the
abdominal wall for reinforce-
ment.
Generally, hernia surgery
is performed on an outpatient
basis, and you can return
home on the same day.
You can expect some ten-
derness and discomfort for a
few days before you return to
normal activities.
When the surgery is com-
pleted, there will be restric-
tions on what you can lift, un-
til you are completely healed.
Untreated abdominal her-
nias can lead to severe com-
plications.
If part of the intestine be-
comes trapped outside the
muscles of the abdomen, a
blockage may develop.
In the worst cases, the
blockage can cut off blood
supply to part of the intestine,
ultimately causing this section
of the intestine to die.
Abdominal hernias ih chil-
dren, though infrequent, are
often congenital, and need
surgical repair.
However, they do appear
in about 10% of adults, and
surgery is the only cure.
The good news is that
the prognosis for recovery is
excellent if the treatment is
completed in a timely man-
ner.
I will discuss additional
information on hernias in fu-
ture newspaper editions.

that absolutely NO medicine can
be brought to school by a student

include prescription and over-the-
counter medicines such as cough
drops, Tylenol, cold pills, Anbesol,
antibiotic cream, etc. They are all
considered DRUGS ON CAMPUS
by the school police. The only ex-
ception is asthma inhalers; how-
ever, the school nurse must have
a written order from the doctor,
renewed yearly, allowing the stu-
dent to carry it. Medicines allowed
on campus must have written or-
ders from doctor and parent and
are securely locked in a medicine
cabinet located in the school
clinic. Only adults (parents/guard-
ians) are allowed to bring medi-
cine to school; they must have

The Church Seasons, and the Lenten Season

By The Reverend Samuel
S. Thomas, Ph. D.+
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
Church calendars help keep
worship from being repetitive
and provide a variety of themes
around which people can grow
in different parts of belief.
Best of all, they can give a se-
quence of unfolding events in the
growth and revelation of what
faith is really about.
If there is no organized reli-
gious plan or calendar, worship
can become "same-old-same-
old" and get monotonous or re-
flect limits of understanding of
the breadth and depth of what
faith has to offer.
There is more to it than hear-
ing pet peeves or having some-
one grind axes over and over and
over.
There is a certain tempo in

worship and Church celebrations
throughout the year; it can add
variety and zest to Sunday morn-
ings.
Everyone knows about Christ-
mas in December and Easter in
the Spring, but there are other
special times to commemorate,
each with something to add to
experiencing and understanding
what faith can give.
This season is the season of
Lent in many Church calendars.
It is for preparation for Easter,
for getting ready for the great-
est of Christian holidays (no, not
Christmas Easter! the message
of resurrection and the promise
that we will participate in it with
the One who has gone before).
As with any- great event, you
prepare for it first.
A special meal with friends?
You don't overindulge before
getting together!

A special gathering of your
baseball team?
You may wish to practice be-
fore getting on the field.
So too with our spiritual life;
getting ready makes the special
times all the more meaningful.
For centuries people prepared
for Easter by their acts of devo-
tion and concentrating on doing
something special as a prelude
to the great celebration on Easter
morning.
The would add something to
their daily devotional schedules
and prayers, give up something
so that someone else might enjoy
a little better life, attend a Bible
study group,, take on a project.
(Sometimes it was time to begin a
diet something done in the name
of religious that should have been
done anyway!).
There are Biblical examples.
Jesus went off to Gethsemane

to pray before He faced arrest, tri-
al, condemnation, execution and
finally resurrection. ( e.g. Matthew
26:36ff) He takes forty days in the
wilderness after His baptism and
before He begins His earthly min-
istry (Matthew 4:lff, Mark 1:12-
13, Luke 4: ff).
These times of preparedness
are for facing spiritual tempta-
tions and resolving to win out
over them.
They set the stage for great
things to come. Christians ever
afterward have taken forty days
before Easter as a time to follow
the example given to us.
This season, Lent, is one of
those times; we get ready for a
great event by facing things that
could detract us first.
The word "Lent" comes from
the old English word for "Length-
en" and was related to the time
when the days of the year grew

longer as winter was coming to
an end.
Little by little, more light would
come with each morning, a sign
that a greater light would come
into the world at Easter and things
would get brighter and brighter
for humanity.
It is in our getting ready for
special occasions that we make
them even more special.
As we save our appetites for a
big banquet; so we can hone up
on our spiritual selves before a
great spiritual occasion.
Like Christmas, a joyful occa-
sion just doesn't "happen" with-
out lots of preparation first,.We
purchase the gifts, do the shop-
ping, pick out a tree, decorate the
house, plan to be with friends; all
days before then actual event.
Easter should be the same for
us too; only on a more spiritual
plane -and that's what Lent is

about.
Like other times, occasions,
and things we share; we get out of
them what we put in (and maybe
even more sometimes).
May this pre-Easter season be
for us all a special time of getting
ready, and make the Lord's Resur-
rection celebration be a great and
glorious occasion for everyone.

Stand firm in your faith, or you will not stand

By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
"I looked for a man among
them who would build up the
wall and stand before me in the
gap on behalf of the land so I
would not have to destroy it, but I
found none." (Ezekiel 22:30)
There's a common saying go-
ing around today, "If you don't
stand for anything, then you will
stand for nothing." The prophet
Isaiah stated it this way, "If you do
not stand firm in your faith, you
will not stand at all."
Hearers must become doers.
The faith we proclaim with
our Sunday morning affirmations
has to be evident in our Monday
morning lives.
Evil flourishes when the good
do nothing.
"Theologian Martin Niem6ller
was imprisoned by the Nazis in
1937.
He stated that when the Nazis
attacked the Communists in 1933,
he was a little uneasy, but he was
not a Communist, and so he did
Nothing.
They continued as other
groups were targeted, but still he
did nothing.
And then they attacked the
Church, and he was a Church-
man, and he did something but
then it was too late." .--- ..
In looking back over the ex-
perience, he composed the fol-

lowing poem: "They came first
for the Communists, and I didn't
speak up because I wasn't a
Communist. And then they came
for the trade unionists, and I
didn't speak up because I wasn't
a trade unionist. And then they
came for the Jews, and I didn't
speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me. And by
that time there was no one left to
speak up."
Evil flourishes when the good
do nothing.
If we do not stand firm in our
faith, we will not stand at all.
In our confession of faith, we
say, "I believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of the Living God,
and I accept Him as Lord of my
life."
And when we pray the Lord's
Prayer, we pray, "Thy .kingdom
come, Thy will be done, on earth
as it is ih heaven."
We say all of these wonderful
things, but what do with we do
with them?
There's a big difference be-
tween what is going on out there
and what should be going on out
there.
There's a big difference be-
tween what people are interested
in and what they should be inter-
'ested in.
The world's question is, "What
is this world coming to?"
The church's question is
"What is coming to this world?"

Will God's chosen instrument,
the church, bring Christ to this
coming world?
There are times when God
meets our need to be comforted
and strengthened.
But there are also times when
God knows that our greater need
is to have our thinking challenged,
our faith examined, our lifestyle
called into question.
A time when we are called to
put our faith into action and stand
in the gap.
Jesus doesn't call us to walk
on water.
He did that.
Jesus doesn't call us to change
water into wine.
He did that.
Jesus doesn't call us to multi-
ply loaves and fishes.
He did that.
Jesus does call us to believe in
God.
Jesus can't do that for us. Je-
sus does call us to trust God.
Jesus can't do that for us.
And Jesus does call us to love
one another and stand firm in our
faith and to make a difference.
Evil flourishes when the good.
do nothing.
Hearers must at last become
doers. The faith we. proclaim
on Sunday mornings has to be
evident in our Monday morning
lives.
Added note: On Saturday,
March 21, we as a community

will have a chance to stand and
make a statement.
People are encouraged to
gather at 10 a.m. across from the
old sub station at the corner of El
Paso and Francisco in Clewiston,
for a Unity March Against Vio-
lence.
The plans are to march through
several troubled neighborhoods

and conclude with a rally at the
Elk's park on Francisco.
We love our community and
want to claim it for the Light. This
is one of several efforts to let cer-
tain elements know that we are
not going to just sit by and let
them corrupt our youth.
. Join us!

An essay: If I were the Devil

By Jackie Miller,
Evangelist
First Christian Church
Our nation will be strong only
as long as it is convinced of the
validity of he Bible as the eternal
message from God. The strength
of the nation is found in the com-
mitment and obedience to the
Bible as the inspired and authori-
tative Word of God.
! A noted newscaster once
wrote the things that would lead
to the destruction of our beloved
nation. He titled if "If I Were The
Devil" and this is what he said:
If I were the Devil:
I would gain control of the
most powerful nation in the
world.
I would delude their minds
into thinking that they had come
from man's effort instead of God's
blessings;
I would promote an attitude
of loving things and using people,
instead-of the other way around;
I would up entire states into

relying on gambling for their state
revenue;
I would convince people that
character is not. an issue when it
comes to leadership;
I would make it legal to take
the life of unborn babies;
I would make it socially ac-
ceptable to take one's own life,
and invent machines to make it
convenient;
I would cheapen human life as
much as possible, so that the lives
of animals are valued more than
human beings;
I would take God out of
schools, where even the mention
of His name was grounds for a
lawsuit;
I would get control of the me-
dia, so that every night I could
pollute the minds of every family
member for my agenda;
I would attack the family, the
backbone of any nation;
I would make divorce accept-
able and easy, even fashionable,
because if the family crumbles, so

does the nation;
I would compel people to ex-
press their most depraved fanta-
sies on canvas and movie screens,
and I would call it Art;
I would convince the world
that people are born homosexu-
als and that their lifestyles should
be accepted and marveled;
I would convince the people
that right and wrong are deter-
mined by a few who call them-
selves authorities, and refer to
their agenda as politically correct;
I would persuade people that
the church is irrelevant and out of
date, and that the Bible is for the
naive;
I would dull the minds of
Christians to make them believe
that prayer is not important and
that faithfulness and obedience
are optional.
I guess I would leave things
pretty much the way they are
right now!

process.
"A lot of people felt I was doing
an injustice to the city in running
against Kendall," he continued.
"It wasn't anything against her,
but I simply felt like it was my
time to make a difference here."
The makeover of Belle Glade's
new commission is complete, as
the five commissioners who'll be
seated in next Monday's (Mar. 16)
commission meeting are as fol-
lows:
Steve Wilson currently
Belle Glade's mayor
Gwendolyn Asia-Holly
William Grear Jr.
Michael Martin
Mary Wilkerson
Residents can expect to find
out who will be voted by the new
commission as the city's mayor,
vice-mayor and treasurer at the
very beginning of the Mar. 16
meeting, which will begin at 7
p.m.
The terms of the three posi-
tions, according to the city char-
ter, are good for.one year.
It officially begins on Apr. 1
and lasts until Mar. 30 of each fis-'

cal year.
Pahokee, South Bay
seats stay intact
Keith Babb, a 16-year Pahokee
commissioner, can breath easy
now.
He just added two more years
to his political resume after defeat-
ing 25-year-old Nicholas Larsen in
the city's only contested seat.
Babb secured 258 votes,
equivalent to an astounding 72
percent.
Larsen garnered just 98 votes
(28 percent).
Larsen on the election results:
"It was a disappointedly low
turnout at the polls," Larsen said.
"Not many people even both-
ered to take the time out and
vote," he continued.
"If more people would've
come. out, I think I would have
done better."
On Tuesday, the day of the
election, Larsen was not happy
with the five-minute exchange
he had with Babb near the China
King Chinese restaurant.
At about 8 a.m., just one hour
after the polls opened, both men
reportedly shook hands, with the
two candidates realizing they had
similar viewpoints on how to im-

prove the city's condition.
Shortly after that, according
to Larsen, Babb told him that he
would not get 'more than 10 per-
cent of the vote.'
"Babb told me that to my
face," Larsen said after receiving a
pamphlet from the Pahokee com-
missioner," Larsen said.
"He also told me that he was
the best commissioner that Paho-
kee has," he continued.
"It really caught me off-guard
and it rubbed me the wrong way,"
Larsen vented.
"I didn't say anything bad
about him, didn't even mention
his name in my campaign," he
said of Babb.
"I was really running against
the commission that has brought
Pahokee to the state it's in right
now."
Babb was not available for
comment on this matter after two
attempts to reach him on his cell
phone.
Larsen admitted that he could
have prepared for the elections
better.
"If I would have started my
campaign two, three months in
advance, I think I would've done
better," Larsen said.
"I should have taken more

time to sit down and spend visits
with the citizens."
Larsen, who has moved to Pa-
hokee less than three years ago,
also realized that being a rela-
tively new resident, coupled with
his young age, may have counted
against him.
"That was a major hurdle, I
have to say," Larsen said.
"Babb has been a commis-
sioner for 16 years and I guess
the citizens know what they're
getting."
Still, Larsen took the election
as a learning experience.
Keeping it from that perspec-
tive, he didn't say whether or not
he'll run again in the 2010 elec-
tions, with Mayor Wayne Whi-
taker and Commissioners Allie
Biggs and Diane Walker up for
re-election.
"I don't think I'll run next year,
I want to lay low for a while," Lar-
sen said.
"But I won't rule it out."
All three of South Bay's seats
remain intact, with Esther Berry
receiving a major scare from 27-
year-old Taranza McKelvin.

The 2004 Florida A & M gradu-
ate, who ran for the first time in
these elections, lost to Berry by
just five votes.
Berry defeated McKelvin with
51 percent of South Bay's vote.
The razor-thin voting margin
was 221-216.
Shirley Walker-Turner, cur-
rently the city's mayor, fended off
Dorothy Davis with 60 percent of
the vote.
Walker-Turner, who'll likely
be voted again as the mayor at
the city's Mar. 17 commission
meeting, garnered 263 votes,
compared to 176 for Davis (40
percent).
John Wilson cruised past Bar-
bara King-Pittrell with 63 percent
of the vote.
The voting margin was 280-
162 in favor of Wilson.
King-Pittrell secured just 37
percent of South Bay's vote.
Result information from the
Palm Beach County Supervisor of
Elections Office was used in this
story.

Relay
Continued From Page 1
"People don't feel comfortable
being out at night in the Glades
anymore," said Wright, who has
been tapped as the media chair-
person for the Relay For Life func-
tioth.
"It's terrible for me to say it,
but it's true," he continued.
"It's not a fear thing, we just
need to take precautions." I
The basic premise of Relay For
Life is for area residents to obtain
an opportunity to learn more
about the various types of cancer
and the effects of it.
In essence, Relay For Life is a
way to not only raise funds for
cancer research, but to celebrate
the lives of those who have over-
come the disease.
It's also an outlet to honor and
remember those who have lost
their lives to cancer.
Wright knows this all too well,
as he has lost his father, three of
his friends and a great nephew to
various forms of cancer.
"It is a scourge upon this
earth," Wright said.
S 'We all need td du iipart td
help those who have had to deal
with all aspects of life with it and
the consequences after it."
There will be many tears shed,
but there will be many laughs, as
well. '
The Relay For Life event will,

in some respects, serve as a way
to celebrate, the renovation of
the Pahokee Recreational Center
Complex.
The facility currently hosts
such things as the city's commis-
sion meetings and possibly next
month's Q-Fest Fun-Day-In-The-
Park, courtesy of NFL Pro Bowl
wideout Anquan Boldin.
"This renovation is the realiza-
tion of a 20-year dream that has
taken many turns and twists for
. the City of Pahokee," Wright said.
Wright is careful to give credit
to 'Herbert Crawford, the city's
recreational director who's had a
direct impact on just about every-
one who hails from the close-knit
community.
Wright has also hinted that the
Relay For Life event has found a
Permanent home in the Pahokee
Recreational Center Complex.
Just last year, due to a set of
regulations and monetary cut-
backs with the Palm Beach Coun-
ty School Board, the Relay had to
be moved from Glades Central
High School.
"What-could have been a di-
saster for the local heroes who
always fight the fight soon turned
into a beautiful Oppotlunity,"
Wright said,
"Herbert and his staff have
offered their facility, helped get
it working, and gave such warm
moral support," he continued.
"Their assistance and healthy
attitude in all of their dealings

have made us perfect team mem-
bers in the fight against cancer."
In a prelude to the annual
event, the Relay For Life Task
Force hosted a barbecue on Sat-
urday, Feb. 7 at the recreational
center for sign-up purposes.
Residents from the Glades
area had the opportunity to get
familiar with how this weekend's
event will be operated.
Teams were recruited and
formed at last month's function.
They also found out that
this occasion will, according to
Wright, be the only one in the
state to be held in the daytime.
"We noticed that some of our
long-time participants have, for
some reason, aged a bit and the
evening hours just didn't cut it for
them," Wright explained.
"Some parents were con-
cerned about the evening hours
and the effect it has on their chil-
dren and school."
With those changes in place,
Wright is hoping for a high turn-
out on Saturday.
"I think we did the right thing,"
WVright said matter-of-factly.

John Stretch Park is located on

vive the incident.
Investigators learned that the
driver's, injuries were serious,
with drugs and alcohol possibly
playing a role in the crash.
All three victims were report-
edly airlifted to Delray' Medical
Center, where it-was revealed that

It's not known at this time
whether or not the driver will be

The child, officials said, was

Hospital, where it was discovered

names of the two people Ivan
Santiago, 48, of Belle Glade and
Natalie Santiago, 8, of Chosen.
