Blanket ambulance
coverage by county's
fire rescue service
By Naji Tobias
The Sun
WESTERN PALM BEACH
COUNTY On Monday morn-
ing, the Palm Beach County Fire
Rescue began its availability of
ambulance services throughout
the Glades area.
According to Michael Arena,
the fire rescue's district battalion
chief, there will be full emergen-
cy medical services and transport
throughout the entire region.
The services, according to Chief
Arena, include four advanced life
support transport units two in
Belle Glade and one each in Pa-
hokee and South Bay.
In addition, three out of the
four fire engines that exist in the
Glades area are equipped with
the aforementioned services.
This means that residents can
expect to have on hand such
devices as an array of life-saving
emergency medication typical to
those found in emergency rooms
and cardiac-monitoring equip-
ment, to name just a few.
"The level of fire rescue ser-
vices will be equal to that of the
rest of the county," Chief Arena
said. "The residents of the Glades
area should be able to welcome
our services even better than be-
fore."
With these welcome en-
hancements provided by the fire
rescue, the services will be avail-
able 24 hours a day, seven days
a week to anyone in need of an

critical condition
By Naji Tobias
The Sun
BELLE GLADE A 19-yeatr
old woman suffered a gunshot
wound to the head on Saturday
night, in Belle Glade, the sheriff's
office said.
According to Sergeant Pete
Palenzuela, the spokesman for
the Palm Beach County Sheriff's
Office (PBSO), the woman,
Ronkeysha Thomas, was eight
months pregnant and is hos-
pitalized in critical condition.
Published reports say that doc-
tors performed surgery on her
to deliver herbaby while she re-
mained in a coma.
Officials said that at approxi-
mately 7:30 p.m., detectives
arrived in front of 872 Martin
Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the
scene of the incident.
It was revealed that. at the
time of the shooting, the victim
was around a group of 10-12
people who heard fireworks-
sounding noises nearby. A short
time later, more sounds were
heard closer to the crowd, offi-
cials said.
Unfortunately for the preg-
nant woman, she was hit by one
of the stray projectiles and fell to
the ground a few second later.
The victim was airlifted via
Trauma Hawk to Delray Medical
Center.
A nearby resident, who was
close to the scene at the time,
describes the vicinity of S.W
Ninth Street and Martin Luther
King Jr. Boulevard as heavy with
gang activity.

Braving the chilly weather
Glades area
experiences
low temperatures
By Naji Tobias
The Sun
WESTERN PALM BEACH
COUNTY- "It ain't supposed to
be cold in the Sunshine State,"
William Orr said, as the Glades
Day School senior headed to
class on Jan. 3.
The night before, the Glades-
area braced for unusually chilly
conditions.
According to the National
Weather Service, temperature
for the region was around 30
degrees on Jan. 2.
For Anthony Norton, anoth-.
er Glades Day School senior,
the cold night was something
to remember.
"I put on some long pants
and covered up with three blan-
kets," Anthony said. "When I
got up for school, I just went
on and took a hot shower."
The cold morning was
also the first day of school for
Glades Day after a two-week
winter break.
It was somewhat a major
concern for Shelly Burch, a
12t'-grade anatomy teacher at
Glades Day School.
"I probably was wonder-
ing if my students were going
to pay attention in class," Ms.
Burch said. "They seem excit-
ed about the cold weather and
from being out for the holidays.
I was concerned about their
level of focus and participation
as they prepare for their semes-
ter exams."
Alex St. Marie, one of Ms.
Burch's students, said that he
was excited about the weather
because he was able to wear
his 2006 Class IA state champi-
onship jacket. Alex added that
it was the first time that he was
uncomfortably cold.
Meanwhile, Cindy Orsenigo,
another student, was worried
about her father's crops due to
the freezing temperatures. INI/Najl Tobias

South Florida adopts One-day-a-week watering
Regional
water levels
in seasonal decline
WEST PALM BEACH -- For
:the first time in the agency's
'history, the South Florida Water
:Management District (SFWMD)
,today declared an extreme Dis-
'trict-wide water shortage, di-
irectly affecting more than five
:million South Florida residents
,and thousands of farms and
,businesses. At its monthly meet-
'ing, the District's nine-member
Governing Board adopted a
groundbreaking water short-
age order, instituting a one-
'day-a-week watering schedule
'for residential landscape irriga-
tion to conserve regional water
'supplies. Landscape irrigation
,accounts for up to half of all
'household water consumption
iin Florida and totals more than
seven billion gallons per day
nationwide.
S"The order represents the
inmost stringent landscape irriga-
tion measures that this agency
bhas ever had to impose, but
we believe it will significantly
Help to protect and stretch
Obur regional water supplies,"
said SFWMD Governing Board
Chairman Eric Buermann. "We
appreciate the public's under-
standing and compliance with
these necessary restrictions
that will result in measurable
water savings."
Highlights of the Modified
Phase III water shortage order,
which will be enforced begin-
ning January 15, 2008, include:
Residents and businesses of
Okeechobee, St. Lucie, Martin,
Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-
Dade, Monroe, Hendry and
Glades counties are limited to
a one-day-per-week landscape
irrigation schedule with two
"watering windows."
Odd street addresses may ir-
rigate lawns and landscapes on
Mondays between 4 a.m. and 8
a.m. or 4: p.m. and 8 p.m.
Even street addresses may ir-
rigate lawns and landscapes on
Thursdays between 4 a.m. and
8 a.m. or 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Residents and businesses
with more than five acres have
expanded irrigation hours, be-
tween midnight and 8 a.m. or
4 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on their
designated irrigation day.
Residents and businesses
in Lee and Collier counties are
limited to one-day-a-week wa-
tering during specific four-hour
"watering windows" directly
associated with their unique
street addresses (page 3 of this
PDF).
Hand-watering with one
hose fitted with an automatic
shut-off nozzle is allowed for 10
minutes per day for landscape
stress relief and to prevent plant
die-off.
Low-volume irrigation, in-
cluding the use of drip and mi-
crojet systems that apply water
directly to plant root zones, is
not restricted but should be vol-
untarily reduced.
Additional watering days
and times will be allocated for
the establishment of new lawns
and landscapes.
No restrictions apply to other
outside water uses, such as for
car and boat washing, pressure
cleaning of paved surfaces,
decorative fountains and water-
based recreation (e.g. swim-
ming pools, water slides).
Golf courses must reduce
their allocated water use by 45
percent.
"Our lawns do not need to
be watered more than once a
week during the dry season,
and with seasonal rainfall to
help, it should be more than
enough to maintain a healthy
lawn," added Buermann.
The new, mandatory restric-
tions apply to all water from tra-
ditional sources, including wa-
ter from public utilities, private
wells, canals, ponds and lakes.
Users of 100-percent reclaimed
water are exempt from the re-
strictions but are encouraged to
conserve water voluntarily.
Because jurisdiction in cer-
tain counties is shared with oth-
er water management districts,
the SFWMD has coordinated
with these agencies to simplify
implementation and enforce-
ment. Residents of Orange and
Osceola counties should ad-
here to any water restrictions
set by the St. Johns River Water
Management District. Residents
of Polk, Highlands, and Char-
lotte counties should adhere to
the water restrictions set by the
Southwest Florida Water Man-
agement District. However, golf
courses, nurseries, and agricul-
tural users District-wide should
follow SFWMD water use re-
strictions.
Restrictions Make a Differ-
ence Implementing water use
restrictions has already proved
effective during the continued
regional water shortage. Based
on data reported by 46 public
water utilities in Broward, Palm
Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Col-
lier, Lee and Miami-Dade coun-
ties, an estimated 11.7 billion
gallons of potable water was
saved since March 22, when re-
strictions first went into effect,
through June 30. Savings were
most pronounced on non-wa-
tering days. For example, one
day per week landscape irriga-
tion restrictions instituted in
Broward and Palm Beach coun-
ties saved an estimated 130 mil-
lion gallons a day of potable
water.
Current Conditions
Surface water and ground-
water levels across much of the
District remain unseasonably
low and already are showing
signs of decline with the start
of the dry season in Novem-
ber. The water level in Lake
Okeechobee, the source of wa-
ter for the Florida Everglades
and the primary back-up water
supply for five million South
Floridians, is at its lowest el-
evation ever recorded for the
month of December. At 10.16
feet above sea level this morn-
ing, the lake level already is so
low that water from the lake
cannot be used to replenish
.the regional supply. Even with
average dry season rainfall, wa-
ter managers expect the lake
level to drop over the coming
months below its all-time low
of 8.82 feet above sea level, re-
corded on July 2, 2007. ( Click
here to view chart of Lake 0
low levels and Hydro Graph of
Lake 0 )
"Our water resources are all
interconnected and our goal is to
ensure we have sufficient water
to meet regional demands dur-
ing the dry season," said Carol
Ann Wehle, executive director
of the SFWMD. "With a full six
months of dry season weather
ahead of us and the subsequent
water level declines that are
typical of South Florida's winter
and spring, we are heading into
uncharted territory."

Dolly Hand, Step Afrika! receive Muse Award nods
Awards ceremony
to be held on Jan. 11
at Kravis Center
By Naji Tobias
The Sun
BELLE GLADE -- It has been
a great year for the Dolly Hand
Cultural Arts Center.
First, the arts center celebrat-
ed its 25 anniversary earlier this
year. Now, the year ends with
another big celebration.
Dolly Hand and the Step Af-
rika! Project, a Dolly Hand Cul-
tural Arts Center production,
picked up two nominations for
the 2008 Muse Awards.
Dolly Hand was nominated
for Civic Leader of the Year,
while the Step Afrika! Project
was nominated for the Arts and
Cultural Program of the Year.
The ceremony will be held
on Jan. 11 at the Kravis Center
in West Palm Beach.
Leigh Woodham, the Dolly
Hand Center's theatre manager,
was ecstatic About the recogni-
tion.
"This is probably the largest
award that the Dolly Hand Cen-
ter has been nominated 'to re-
ceive in its history," Ms. Wood-
ham said. "I'm thrilled that there
are two representatives from the
Glades area selected for these
nominations."
According to the theatre man-
ager, Ms. Hand is one of only
three civic leaders in the county
that was nominated. In fact, it
'is the second consecutive year
that Ms. Hand was nominated
for the honor.
Ms. Woodham added that it
is the first time the D.olly Hand
Center was nominated for any
production.
The Step Afrika! Project, a
nationally recognized step team;
performed last March at the Afro-
Arts Festival and the Dolly Hand
Center. The step team, based in
Washington, D.C., worked with
Ms. Woodham in organizing
a three-month project entitled
'Step Up to College'.
In the development it lasted
from Dec. 2006 to last March -
seven different after-school pro-
grams and step teams, which
consisted of over 200 Glades-
area youth, worked closely with
Step Afrika! in mastering the
concept of stepping.
Step Afrika! stressed to the
area youth the three most im-
portant concepts of stepping
-- teamwork, commitment and
discipline, according to Ms.
Woodham. By the end of the
three-month project, the per-
formances that followed were
deemed a huge success as tick-
ets sold out prior to the show.
Ms. Woodham said that the
Step Afrika! Project will likely
perform again this coming
March.
The Step Afrika! team is
slated to perform at the Muse
Awards on Friday.
Dr. Beverly Robinson, the
provost at Palm Beach'Com-
munity College, believe that the
nominations are well-deserved.
"We're very excited about
the nominations and it proves
that our college is doing its part
to keep arts and culture in the
community," Dr, Robinson 'said.
The honors may not have
been possible if not for the many
past achievements of Ms. Hand.
Ms. Hand has received nu-
merous awards throughout
the years for her service in the
Glades area. Most notably, she
is the one who spearheaded the
efforts in the building of the Dol-
ly Hand Center, which opened
on April 17, 1982.
Ms. Hand was also instru-
mental in the construction of
the Belle Glade Branch Library,
which opened in 1967.
Dolly Hand Center officials
believe that both nominees will
win big at the Muse Awards.
"We will be very happy if we
win," Ms. Woodham said. "We
will proudly bring home our
awards to the Glades."

Free throw attempt
In a game played between the Glades Central Raiders and
Clewiston Tigers on Dec. 21, Tigers junior guard Jonathon
Williams attempts a free throw in the first half after getting
fouled by an opposing Raider. It was a great game, but in
the end, Glades Central squeaked out a 73-61 victory over
Clewiston. The Raiders have a 4-2 record right now, while
the Tigers have a record of 7-3 not including the past
holiday tournaments both teams played in.

No-Fault Insurance bill is signed
Re-enacts PIP
on Jan. 1, 2008
TALLAHASSEE -- Governor
Charlie Crist today signed legis-
lation that will re-enact Florida's
Motor Vehicle No-Fault Law
and ensure that drivers have
$10,000 worth of health care
benefits through personal in-
jury protection or PIP coverage
by Jan. 1, 2008. The legislation
also reforms the law that sunset
on Oct. 1, 2007, to include mea-
sures to protect consumers and
reduce fraud.
"Today is a great day for the
people of Florida because the
Florida Legislature stepped in
to provide protections for Flor-
ida's drivers," said Governor
Crist. "In doing so, they made.a
good law an even better law by
helping reduce opportunities
for fraud."
House Bill 13C, sponsored by
Representative Ellyn Bogdanoff
(R-Ft. Lauderdale) and Sena-
tor Bill Posey (R-Rockledge)
who joined Governor Crist for
the bill signing ceremony, pro-
vides maximum allowable fees
for medical providers, ensuring
that the $10,000 in benefits go
further. It also requires automo-
bile insurers to notify by Nov.
15, 2007, any policyholders
who do not already have PIP
coverage that they must obtain
coverage by Jan. 1, 2008.
The legislation also contains
the following provisions:
Requires health care pro-
viders to demonstrate certain
qualifications before they can
receive PIP reimbursements.
Reserves $5,000 worth
of benefits for physicians who
provide emergency services or
inpatient hospital care.
Streamlines the legal pro-
cess for disputed claims by
requiring that all PIP claims re-
lated to a single provider for the
same injured person be joined
in a single lawsuit.
!* Authorizes the Attorney
General, in addition to the Of-
fice of Insurance Regulation,
to take action against insurers
who demonstrate a pattern of
not paying valid claims.
Citrus Industry dodges cold weather bullet
LAKELAND -- The Florida
citrus industry dodged a bullet
early Thursday, Jan. 3, morning
as low temperatures across the
state failed to cause significant
damage to the crop.
There may be isolated areas
that have minor fruit damage,
however, temperatures did
not dip low enough for long
enough duration to create sub-
stantial problems.
"This is good news for
growers, good news for con-
sumers and good news for the
state of Florida," said Michael
W. Sparks, executive vice presi-
dent/CEO of Florida Citrus Mu-
tual. "Mother Nature cut us a
break this time and now we
can continue to produce the
quality citrus crop Florida is
known for."
"As reports come in, we fulI
ly expect to hear about pockets
of fruit damage but as a whole
the industry came through this
in good shape."
According to grower reports,
Arcadia reached 27 degrees,
Wauchula hit 28 degrees, Se-
bring came in at 29 degrees
and Vero Beach dipped to 33
degrees.
The United States Depart-
ment of Agriculture has fore-
cast a 168 million box orange
crop, which represents a 30
percent increase from the
2006-2007 Season.
Founded in 1948 and cur-
rently representing nearly 8,000
grower members, Florida Cit-

Arithmetickles are on their
way to Florida Schools
Arithmetickles, the interac-
tive math show, is on its way to
Florida schools during the month
of February 2008. A national tour-
ing production performed during
school assemblies and for parent/
student evenings, Arithmetickles
is based on the inspired concept
of math plus fun.
Presented by ArtsEcho, a New
Jersey-based theatre and musical
arts production company now in
its 20th year, Arithmetickles uses
theatre games, audience partici-
pation, interactive math, teams of
kids onstage, and stand-up com-
edy to help teach mathematics
to children in grades K through
eighth.
Arithmetickles lives up to its
name. It was created by the team
of Sandra and Ben Bendor, who
are theatre artists and parents
of three children. Concerned
by their own kids' reluctance to
learn math through traditional
classroom methods, the Bendors
decided to use their theatre and
comedy skills to help school-
children appreciate the world of
math. They came up with a show
that makes math funny and cool,
not only for elementary and mid-
dle school students, but also for
their teachers and parents.
Recognizing the fact that
math is the gateway to technol-
ogy and science, the Bendors
and their non-profit organization,
ArtsEcho, created a show that
takes math out of the textbook
and vividly demonstrates to kids
that numbers, shapes and prob-
lem-solving are a vital part of our
everyday lives.
From 32 shows in its first
year, Arithmetickles has grown
to more than 750 shows annu-
ally throughout the United States.
Now in its Tenth year, Arith-
metickles has been seen by more
than 1,650,000 kids in 21 states
and in Canada.
Founded in 1987, ArtsEcho
not only produces Arithmetickles
and Arithmetickles Math Night,
but also the concert, "20th Cen-
tury Music and On" (now in its
16fh year) and the Arts in Educa-
tion Directory of the Northeast.

One woman's fight inspires others
BELLE GLADE -- Resolutions
go hand-in-hand with celebrat-
ing the New Year. Weight loss
is often at the top of the list of
changes. For Ann Lovell, a retired
school teacher and librarian, her
tremendous weight loss story be-
gan as a life-long struggle. When
Ann's weight inched toward 300
pounds, she decided changes
had to be made. After several
failed attempts at weight loss pro-
grams, Ann enrolled in the Well-
ness Program at Glades General
Hospital. For Ann, this was the
first time she incorporated exer-
cise into her weight loss plan.
"It makes me feel great and
the compliments keep ,me go-
ing," said the Belle Glade resi-
dent. It was a long slow process
and initially frustrating for her
when the early weight loss was
not outwardly visible. Five years
later and 110 pounds lighter, Ann
has beaten the odds. Ann learned
how to safely advance her exer-
cise workloads and monitor her
heart rate at. the hospital's medi-
cally supervised program. She
also received support, 'education,
and encouragement, not only
from the staff, but also from the
other participants. Ann currently
performs 50-60 minutes of aero-
bic exercise in addition to stretch-
ing exercises, and weight train-,
ing. Nurse Karen Schutzer, the
Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation
& Wellness at Glades General
said, "The tremendous weight
loss accomplished by Ann Lpvell '
is probably the greatest success
story in my department. Ms.
Lovell is actually quite "tickled"
about all the attention and shar-
ing her story with others."
Diabetes is a significant health
issue affecting the Glades. The
rate of hospitalization of Glades
residents for chronic diseases
such as diabetes, asthma and
cardiopulmonary disoflers is
much higher than the rates coun-
ty-wide. Statistics show among
Medicaid patients at Glades Gen-
eral Hospital in 2005, a rate of 37
per 1000 hospital visits for dia-
betes compared to 22 per 1000
county-wide. In addition to the
Wellness Program, Glades Gen-
eral Hospital also offers, cardiac
rehabilitation to help heart pa-
tients recover faster after heart
surgery or a heart attack, allow-
ing them to resume an active
and healthy lifestyle; The new
$73 million regional hospital
that the Health Care District of
Palm Beach County is currently
constructing in the Glades will
have significantly more space for
increased education and well-
ness opportunities. The Cardiac
Rehabilitation and Wellness Cen-
ter of Glades General Hospital is
located at Glades Medical Plaza,
941 SE First St. in Belle Glade and
is open Tuesdays & Thursdays
from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. For
information on programs, call
561-996-5131.
About Glades
General Hospital
Glades General Hospital, Palm
Beach County's only public hos-
pital, is a JCAHO accredited 73-
bed acute care facility located in
the heart of a large agricultural
belt on the southern shores of
Lake Okeechobee. Operated by
the Health Care District of Palm
Beach County, GGH is one of the
largest employers in the Glades
with just over 300 employees. The
Health Care District is currently
constructing a new regional hos-
pital and medical campus that
will open in 2010. This state of
the art $73 million facility will be
the first hospital in the county to
feature all private patient rooms.
The new 70-bed hospital hopes
to attract physicians and patients
from all over Palm Beach County
with services including: a Trauma
Hawk air landing pad; a 24-hour
physician staffed emergency
room; obstetrics with advanced
diagnostic testing; general sur-
gery; social services; radiology
and nuclear medicine.

Homemade soup has medicinal value
For centuries, chicken soup
has been prescribed as a home
remedy for colas and flu. In
studies conducted over the past
three decades, modern science
has confirmed chicken soup ac-
tually has medicinal value.
A study at the University Of
Nebraska Medical Center found
chicken soup reduced inflam-
mation and acted as a natural
decongestant. A study at the
UCLA School of Medicine found
that cysteine, an amino acid re-
leased from chicken in cooking,
acts much like the drug acetyl-
cysteine, which is prescribed for
respiratory problems. A 1978
study published in the medical
journal "Chest" found that sip-
ping chicken soup helps clear
up congestion.
. Most recently, a study by the
USDA found that viruses are
more likely to attack people
whose diet lacks the nutrients
vitamin E and selenium -- found
in garlic.
Many ingredients in chicken
soup have medicinal value.
Chicken provides protein to
help strengthen the body. It also
contains a substance, which
makes it easier to sleep. Sleep
is often the best thing for a sick
person. Vegetables in the soup -
carrots, parsley, celery, onions,
and parsnips provide vitamins
and nutrients. Many of these in-
gredients also contain substanc-
es that help fight the flu.
Garlic contains substances
that help lower cholesterol,
lower blood pressure and kill
bacteria.
Sage contains a substance,
which soothes a sore throat.
Thyme contains a natural
decongestant.
A
Healthier
Life
with Katrina Elsken
Celery and carrots are nat-
urally soothing to digestion.
Parsley is also soothing to
the digestion.
Onions contain a substance
that helps break up chest con-
gestion.
Parsnips contain a sub-
stance that is soothing to a sore
throat.
While most versions of chick-
en soup are good for treating
colds and flu, researchers found
the homemade versions with
lots of chicken, garlic and on-
ions are the most potent.
Good chicken soup starts
with lots of chicken.
Some people who are wor-
ried about fat intake make the
mistake of trying to make soup
from boneless, skinless chicken
breasts and then are disap-
pointed that the,soup lacks fla-
vor. For chicken soup, you need
a whole chicken bones and all.
The dark meat and the bones
add flavor and nutrients. Do not
worry about the fat. When the
stock cools, you can easily skim
off the fat.
I use a whole chicken, plus a,
few extra chicken breasts.
First, I make the chicken
stock.
I chop up a head of celery, six
cloves of garlic, two large yel-
low onions, six carrots, a small
bunch of parsley, fresh sage
(about half a cup, chopped),
fresh thyme (about one-fourth
cup, chopped) and three large
parsnips.
In a large stewpot, I saut6
these vegetables and herbs in
olive oil until the celery and on-
ions are tender.
I then add the chicken, sprin-
kle it with about one teaspoon
salt and half a teaspoon pep-
per, add enough liquid (water
or chicken broth) to completely
cover the chicken, bring it to a
boil, then turn it down to sim-
mer, cover the pot and, let it
cook until the chicken falls off
the bones about three hours.
At this point, the vegetables
will be mushy. That does not
matter. All of the nutrition is in
the stock anyway.
I put a colander over a large
glass pot (I use the liner that
goes into a crock-pot heating
unit) and strain all of the stock
into the glass pot to cool. (I use
glass because I want to put .in
the refrigerator.) I let the chick-
en cool slightly so I do not burn
my fingers, and then bone it out.
The meat goes into the glass pot
with the stock. I let it cool and
then put it in the refrigerator.
The bones and all the mushy
vegetables go back into the
original pot. I put. back in just
enough stock to cover the mix-
ture of bones and vegetables,
bring it to a boil, and lower the
heat to simmer again. I sim-
mer the bones and mushy veg-
etables for another two to three
hours, then strain this mixture,
saving this stock. The bones
and mushy vegetable hulls are
discarded. I let this additional
stock cool' and then add it to the
rest of my chicken and stock in
the refrigerator. The next day,
I scoop the fat off the top and
discard it. (I mix it with the cats'
dinner. They love it.)
Because I use the bones, the
cooled stock will be like gelatin.
This is because it contains the
nutrients from the bones in-
cluding calcium. (If you want
to maximize the amount of
calcium in the soup, add two
tablespoons of lemon juice or
vinegar to the pot when you are
cooking the bones.)
The next day, I saute more
vegetables in olive oil finely
chopped carrots, celery, onions,
parsnips and parsley: I don't
like mushy vegetables so I only
make enough for the soup we
will be eating that day. When
the vegetables are tender, I add
stock and chicken from the glass
pot (just enough to make soup
for that day),, heat it thoroughly
and season to taste. If you like
noodles, rice or potatoes in your
soup, you can add them at this
time and simmer until they are
cooked. If we aren't going to
use all the stock in a few days,
I can freeze some of the stock
and meat for future meals.
This seems like a lot of soup,
but at my house it seems to dis-
appear pretty quickly. It is low
in fat and calories and packed
with nutrition, so it is a guilt-free
treat. And if you have a cold or
the flu, it really is "good for what
ails you."

home remedy or have a heath
or nutrition question, email

January is Cervical health awareness month
TALLAHASSEE, The Florida
Department of Health recog-
nizes January as Cervical Health
Awareness Month, a time to ed-
ucate, encourage and empower.
women to visit their healthcare
provider for assistance in avoid-
ing this cancer.
"Cervical cancer is now
largely preventable and treat-
able with timely interventions
such as regular Pap smears and
fil'tl:wing. healthy.lifepractices,"7
- said' Susan Fleming, RN, BSN,
MPA, DOH Cancer Program Ad-
ministrator.
Approximately 99. percent of
cervical cancer is attributed to
a virus known as Human papil-
lomavirus (HPV). The virus is
spread through sexual contact,
and women can be unaware of
infection. A woman can best
protect herself from cervical
cancer by limiting her number
of sexual partners, not smoking,
having regular Pap testing, and
promptly following up on any
abnormal Pap test results.
The American Cancer Soci-
ety reports that between 60 and
80 percent of American women
with newly diagnosed invasive
(more serious) cervical cancer
have not had a Pap test in the
past five years and may have
never had one. Groups lacking
in regular checkups include old-
er women, the uninsured, ethnic
minorities, (especially Latinas,
African Americans and' Asian
Americans), and poor women,
particularly those in rural areas.
In Florida during 2005, approxi-
mately 833 cases of newly di-
agnosed cervical cancers were
reported to the statewide cancer
registry and 293 women died as,
a result of cervical cancer.

The following are facts about
the Pap test:
A Pap test can find early cell
,changes in the cervix before
these changes turn into cervical
cancer.
Abnormal cells in the cervix
and cervical cancer do not al-
ways cause symptoms, especial-
ly at the onset, so early detection
is important.
Females should start getting
regular Pap. tests ab.qt:., three;
years after they begin sexual aac-
tivity.
All women should have a
Pap test by age 21, regardless of
sexual activity.
The Florida Department of
Health's Breast and. Cervical
Cancer Early Detection Program
is available statewide. This
program provides assistance to
women ages 50 to 64, who are
uninsured and are at or below
200 percent of the federal pov-
erty level.
By offering information and
support, as well as the critical
screening services that women
need, the program has helped
toremove barriers that prevent
women from getting screened.
Since its inception, over 30,000!
women have received Pap tests
through this program. There
are 16 sites in Florida that serve
all 67 counties.

Dog theology and cat tales

L-----------------------------------------
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church,
Clewiston
I admit it: I'm a dog person.
It's not that I don't like cats, I do.
I even married a cat person. But,
push come to shove, I have to
confess an incli-
nation towards
the canine way
of thinking over
the feline way
of thinking. You
rhay have heard
of "Dog Theol-
ogy" vs. "Cat
Theology." In John
Dog Theology, Hicks
"You feed me.
You pet me. You shelter me. You
love me. You must be God!" In
Cat Theology, "You 'feed me. You
pet me. You shelter me. You love
me. I must be God."
Keeping this in mind, let me
share with you a cat tale I found
amusing. During some flooding
in Washington State, Interstate
By Rev. Samuel S. "
Thomas, Ph.D.+
St. Martin's Church, Clewiston
Itwas a while ago when I met
a flrnilyof immigrants who came
to North-America after World
War II and who
had settled into
a new life in
a new coun-
try. As I got to
know them,
they would tell c
me about their
former life and
hardships we
have not known Samuel S.
here. They Thomas
shared with me an "epiphany
story" one day. It was about sol-
diers coming to their farm after
invading their country and tell-
ing them to pack one suitcase,
then to get onto a waiting truck.
Instead, they ran into the woods
4nd hid until the soldiers left,
went to their home and gath-
red what they could, then es-
caped. They explained that they
5 was submerged for five days.
Camera crews captured a lot of
dramatic rescues. But with all
of the selfless acts of neighbors,
friends, and even total strangers
lifting stranded victims from the
waters, there was one incident
caught on camera that showed
how hard it is to rescue some in-
dividuals.
While filming the flooded
areas and rescues, a television
camera crew noticed a large grey
cat perched on top of one of the
buildings. The flood waters had
completely surrounded this cold
and shivering cat. The television
crew decided to try to rescue the
cat, and paddled and waddled
forward toward the cat. The cat
took one look at the splashing
gang of strangers with blazing
lights and blaring bullhorns and
saw his doom.
As they tried in vain to cor-
ral and catch the cat, one cam-
era recorded the cat's escape to
higher ground. First, the cat leapt
were poor and didn't have much
schooling, but I told them that
1 thought they had done some-
thing that was very wise. Their
instincts and wisdom probably
saved their lives and led them to
a newer, quieter, more peaceful
life.
This is the season that the
church celebrates the Epiphany;
giving thanks that God came to
give new life to all of humanity.
It is a time associated with the
"Three Wise Men" or "Three
Kings." They were "magi", a
word from the Greek related to
"astrologers." It was not their
knowledge, but their wisdom
that is remembered. Their back-
ground would have given them a
special interest in the Star in the
East that appeared over Jesus'
birthplace, and the manifesta-
tion of the light that was to come
into the world. King Herod called
them to interpret the meaning of
the Star (Matthew 2:7ff).
Then, instead of returning to
the king who wished to kill the
an amazing distance to the next
building. Then, still in a panic, the
cat proceeded to climb the alu-
minum siding straight up until he
reached the roof peak, and was
safely out of reach from all those
who had thought they would res-
cue him.
Night was coming, and the
crew left in total defeat. A check of
the same site the next day found
the flood waters had receded,
and the cat had disappeared.
Sometimes we will do any-
thing, including the seemingly
impossible, just to avoid being
saved. The cat didn't trust what
we understand would have been
a saving solution to his dilemma.
We are much the same.
Around two thousand and sev-
en or so years ago, God launched
a rescue mission. The rescue mis-
sion that God set in motion on
that first Christmas still encoun-
ters individuals who have trouble
giving control of their lives into
the hands of another even if it
Messiah and telling them what
they found, "...and having been
warned in a dream, they re-
turned to their country by anoth-
er route (v.12)." Wisdom came
to them in a dream; warning
them to escape and protect the
newborn child from the wrath of
an insane ruler. Their instincts,
enlightened in a dream, brought
them a new life and protected
a life that made kings of us all.
It was in their wisdom that they
became kings; not of earthly ter-
ritories, but in knowing they did
the Lord's work (Jesus himself
would later say, "My kingdom is
not of this world," but His wis-
dom and gifts to us would come
from a kingdom well beyond
our widest imaginations.) They
heard God speaking to them and
in wisdom followed.
. The season of Epiphany is cel-
ebrated in churches as the cel-
ebration of Christ coming to all
peoples. God gave to these "gen-
tile" astrologers even at the time
of Jesus' birth a special place in
is God. It's hard sometimes for
people to see the big picture and
understand what is needed to be
saved.
All lifeguards-in-training are
strictly schooled to never hit the
water without a flotation device.
This is not so much to use it in
rescuing the drowning victim as
to insure that the person they are
trying to save won't succeed in
drowning them!
It is not just the drowning that
put up a big fight. Being saved
requires that we relinquish our
own ability to save ourselves. Be-
ing saved means that we have to
trust another to be able to do for
us what we cannot do for our-
selves. Being saved means that
we need to live with a degree
of uncertainty, because rescuers
can't always communicate to
those they are rescuing exactly
what they are going to do and
how they are ultimately going to
save the victim.
Are you saved?
The great commission and you!
By Jackie Miller
First Christian Church
of Clewiston
In Matthew 28:18-20 we have
the "Great Commission" as given
by Jesus Christ. "Go ye therefore,
and teach all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost, teaching them to observe
all things whatsoever I have com-
manded you, and lo, I am with
you always, even to the end of
the world."
First have you submitted to the
teaching of the Great Commis-
sion? Have you been taught and
believed the Gospel, repented of
sins, confessed faith in Christ and
been immersed for remission of
sins, and thus surrendered your
life to Christ. Have you submit-
ted to being taught and have
you obeyed the things that Christ
commanded? If not, you need to
do that first.
The Great Commission is filled
with action! Go! Teach! Baptize!
Teach! If you are a Christian the
Great Commission is not a mat-
ter of options. It has nothing to
do with talent. The most impor-
.tant element is action in which all
Christians must be involved.
Abraham could not reach the
land of Canaan until he followed
God's injunction "Get thee out of
thy country, and from thy kindred,
and from they father's house,
unto a land I will shew thee.
(Genesis 12:1). Sometimes we
over simplify and over spiritualize
such monumental steps, but the.
next stage in God's plan added a
tremendous amount of drama in
Abraham's obedient actions.
Before Moses could lead his
people out of Egypt, he had to
overcome a mountain of fears,
reservations, and speech prob-
lems even before he left Midian.
Likewise before Gideon's victory
over the Midianites, he had to
continually go through increas-
ingly difficult tests.
Even the Prodigal Son, once
he realized how desperate and
deprecating his pigpen circum-
stances were, he made the ulti-
mate decision: "I will arise and
go to my father."
Nothing worthwhile has ever
been done without positive ac-
tion, and seldom are such feats
done without obstacles. It has
been that way throughout his-
tory.
George Fredric Handel, the
German-born composer, refused
to quit writing his timeless music
despite being paralyzed, finan-
cially broke, and threatened with
debtor's prison.
Admiral Nelson lost an arm
and an eye, his health was gone,
but he sailed with six American
flags flying from his ship, saying,
"If five of the flags are shot down,
I don't want anybody to think that
I have surrendered."
Beethoven lost his hearing,
yet afterwards he composed his
most superb sonatas.
Similarly, Milton wrote his
most sublime poetry after being
stricken with debilitating blind-
ness.
England's Kavanaugh had no
arms and no legs, but his faith en-
abled him to become a staunch
member of Parliament.
Frances Parkman was blind,
but his unshakable sense of ac-
tion and urgency caused him to
put wires across his pages to help
guide his pen so that he could
write his many eye-opening his-
torical books.
Louis Pasteur, after his hor-
rible paralytic stroke, made the
great discovery of the process of
pasteurization.
In the business of reaching the
world for Christ, it is important to
go into action, thinking in terms
of "How," not "if". Those who
would continue to live in terms of
"if" will undoubtedly fail.
His plan, enlightened them, gave
them wisdom, showed them His
favor by leading them to the Lord
and then directed their course af-
terward.
This season, when we cel-
ebrate God's opening the doors
to Heaven to all of humanity,
makes us mindful of that greatest
of gifts; that we are all called to
be His children. In that sense, He
has made us kings too; sharing
in what was brought at Christ-
mas to everyone.
Someone once said that
"knowledge comes but wisdom
lingers." Somewhere in the re-
cesses of the minds of all people,
learned or unschooled, instructed
or self-taught, there is that kind
of wisdom that ultimately takes
us to God. The wise men were
truly kings; we follow in their
footsteps when we follow God's
plan for us, protect His creatures,
listen to our hearts, give thanks
and act with thanksgiving when
we realize what God has opened
to us and done for us all.

the events of the incident.

"If our crops freeze up, then
the market prices will all go up
for everyone," Mr. Molares said.
Not only were growers
throughout the area were pre-
paring for the elements, but the
Red Cross made preparations for
shelter openings.
On the night of Jan. 2, the
West County Senior Citizens Cen-
violence is going on there," the
resident said, angrily. "We have
kids around there and it's just not
safe."
According to the person, the
victim was on her way home
when the stray bullet caught her.
"Ronkeysha is a good young
lady ... and doesn't bother any-
ter was open to those that needed
some shelter.
According to Debbie McDuffie,
the Glades Area branch manager
of the Red Cross, there was one
person who went to the shelter
- a 51-year-old homeless man.
However, since there was only
one who came to the shelter, the
individual was placed at an area
body," she said.
Currently, there are no sus-
pects on the horizon, the sheriff's
office said.
"How many more shootings
are going to take place?" asked
the resident. "The corner of Dr.

Agencies partner for joint truck safety enforcement
The Florida Department
of Transportation Motor Car-
rier Compliance Office (MCCO)
and the Department of High-
way Safety and Motor Vehicles,
Division of the Florida Highway
Patrol, recently partnered in a
Joint Truck Safety Enforcement
Detail on Dec. 18-19, 2007. The
purpose of the two-day opera-
tion was to improve traffic safe-
ty on Florida highways through
intensified traffic law enforce-
ment targeted at commercial
motor vehicles.
"In 2006, fatal crashes involv-
ing large trucks were at the low-
est recorded point in the past
five years. The combined efforts
of the Florida Highway Patrol
and the Motor Carrier Compli-
ance Office of the Florida De-
partment of Transportation' will
help continue to promote this
downward trend and provide
for a safe transportation system
for all motorists," stated Colo-
nel David Dees of the Florida
Department of Transportation.
MCCO Officers concentrated
their enforcement activities in
the 10 counties where the most
fatal truck crashes occurred in
2006. In the two day operation
in these counties, MCCO con-
tacted 682 commercial vehicle
drivers and conducted 467 com-
mercial vehicle driver inspec-
tions. Forty-six of these drivers
were placed out of service for
critical safety violations such as
exceeding hours of service lim-
its, improper driver license and
possession of alcohol or drugs.
Officers also cited 105 com-
mercial drivers for other traffic
violations such as speeding, fol-
lowing too closely, and failure
to use a safety belt..
"We certainly recognize that
the vast majority of commercial
motor vehicle operators drive
in a responsible and law abid-
ing manner. However, because
of vehicle size, weight, and the
type of cargo hauled by com-
mercial vehicles, the potential
for causing crashes resulting in
serious injuries or death is very
real. It is, therefore, imperative
that commercial truck drivers
obey state and federal laws and
regulations meant to protect
their safe passage and that of
the motoring public," stated
Colonel John Czernis, director
of the Florida Highway Patrol.
During this operation, FHP
troopers heightened enforce-
ment efforts on interstates and
other major state roads where
commercial motor vehicle,
speeding and aggressive driv-
ing violations are prevalent.
FHP troopers were watching
for unsafe drivers, especially
those who contribute to colli-
sions between passenger vehi-
cles and large trucks. Violators
were tracked using laser, radar,
Vascar, video cameras, motor-
cycles, and unmarked patrol
vehicles.
"Since 1934, the trucking
industry, through our state as-
sociation, has been vigorously
promoting highway and driver
safety in the Sunshine State,"
said Mary Lou Rajchel, presi-
dent and CEO of the Florida
Trucking Association. "Through
the efforts of FTA's Safety Man-
agement Council and programs
like the Florida/Georgia Joint
Vehicle Inspection, the Florida
Truck Driving Championships,
and the No-Zone education
project of our Florida* Road
Team, we advocate strict com-
pliance with traffic laws. We are
partners in promoting safe driv-
ing practices, and we strongly
encourage and support efforts
such as the recently concluded
Joint Vehicle Safety Enforce-
ment Detail."
The following statistics are
reflective of the activity for en-
forcement actions involving
both commercial vehicles and
passenger cars. Notably, thde
majority of these citations were
written to drivers of passenger
vehicles: total citations 3993,
speed citations 781, following
too closely 42, improper lane
change 38, driving under the
influence arrests 14, seatbel,
citations 271, all other cita
tions 1874.
McCollum encourages free credit reports to be New Years resolutionsi
2007 record year for
the loss or theft of
personal data
TALLAHASSEE Attorney
General Bill McCollum issued
a consumer advisory encourag-
ing Floridians to make a New
Years resolution to get their free
annual credit report at the only
official source for free annual
reports, http://www.annual-
creditreport.com. The website
works in conjunction with Equi-
fax, Experian and TransUnion,
the three national credit report-
ing, companies. Because iden-
tity theft is a significant prob-"
lem threatening Florida, many
citizens seek credit reports to
monitor their personal informa-
tion and ensure that they have
not been unknowingly victim-
ized by identity theft.
Identity theft often wreaks
significant havoc long before
victims are aware of the crime.
By the time they realize they
have been victimized, their fi-
nances, their credit scores and
their reputations are almost,
always seriously impacted, said
Attorney General McCollum.
,"With reports of data thefts on
the rise, I encourage all Florid-
ians to regularly review their
credit reports and bank and
credit card statements carefully
to detect fraudulent charges or
accounts.
Consumers have the option
of ordering one comprehensive
report or one report from each
company, although authorities
recommend spacing the reports
out every four months. Reports
are also available by phone at 1-
877-322-8228.
Last year, the loss or theft of
personal data such as credit card
and Social Security numbers
soared to unprecedented levels.
Major incidents in 2007 included
a breach at TJX Companies, Inc.
that compromised millions of
personal records, lost data disks
with bank account numbers in
Britain, a hacker attack of a U.S.-
based online broker's database
and a scam that unveiled .re-
sume contact information from
a U.S. online jobs site. Under a
June agreement negotiated by
Attorney General McCollum,
TJX agreed to provide an addi-
tional notice to consumers who,
were affected by an earlier data
breach. TJX is the parent com-
pany of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, AJ
Wright and HomeGoods stores.
The Attorney General also
warned that many of the free
credit report offers available on-
line are often far from being free
of charge. Numerous websites
offer free credit reports or credit
scores that are tied to offers of
credit monitoring and/or other
services. These offers often re-
quire payment and the consum-
er is usually unaware that he or
she is paying for a service. Ad-
ditionally, many websites offer
trial memberships that require
consumers to cancel within 30
days or they will be charged a
monthly fee. Should consum-
,ers choose to enroll in a credit
monitoring service, the Attor!
ney General recommends docu4
menting telephone calls wheq
canceling subscriptions and
follow up in writing when they
choose to cancel.
Consumers with complaints
about a credit reporting service
may call the Attorney General's
Fraud Hotline at 1-866-9-NO-
SCAM (1-866-966-7226). They
may also visit the Attorney
General's website at http://my-
floridalegal.com, where infor-
mation is available on obtaining
free credit reports and combat-
ing identity theft.

TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida
Department of Health (DOH) ac-
knowledges January as National
Birth Defects Prevention Month
and Jan. 7-14, as National Folic
Acid Awareness Week. DOH rec-
ognizes the severe impact birth
defects have on Florida's families
and children. Each year, birth de-
fects affect one in 33 newborns
in Florida, are one of the leading
causes of infant mortality, and
contribute significantly to long-
term disabilities.
"Babies born with birth de-
fects and related deficiencies are
a serious matter in Florida and
around the world," said DOH
Deputy Secretary of Children's
Medical Services Joseph Chiaro,
M.D., FAAP. "Our surveillance
program allows us to monitor
the numbers and types of birth
defects that are occurring so we
can develop prevention, inter-
vention and referral programs to
assist affected individuals, fami-
lies and their health care provid-
ers."
Some commonly occurring
birth defects include:
Congenital Heart Defects:
disorders of the heart present at
birth, which affect about one in
100-200 babies;
Chromosomal Abnormali-
ties: disorders involving chromo-
somes, affecting about one in
200 babies;
Orofacial Clefts: disorders of
the lip and/or roof of the mouth,
affecting about one in 700-1,000
babies;
Neural Tube Defects (NTDs):
disorders of the spine (spiha bi-
fida) and brain (anencephaly)
which affect about one in 1,000
pregnancies.
Spina bifida and anenceph-
aly are serious birth defects. In
2004, approximately 73 infants
in Florida were born with NTDs.
To reduce this number, women
who are capable of becoming
pregnant should have 400 mi-
crograms of the B vitamin folic
acid every day. Since NTDs occur
early in pregnancy, before many
women know they are pregnant,
women should take folic acid
before becoming pregnant and
continue during early pregnancy.
Folic acid can be obtained from
multivitamins, dietary supple-
ments and fortified foods, in ad-
dition to eating a diet containing
Vist
at
folate-rich foods such ds spin-
ach and other dark leafy greens,
beans and peas.
DOH recommends that all
women plan their pregnancies
and schedule a pre-pregnancy
checkup to talk with their health
care provider about maintaining
a healthy diet and incorporating
exercise. Because some birth
defects are preventable, it is im-
portant to discuss pre-existing
medical conditions such as dia-
betes, obesity, seizures, family
history of birth defects, as well
as any possible exposures to.
hazardous chemicals. A woman
who is pregnant or planning a
pregnancy should avoid alcohol,
smoking, illegal drugs and medi-
cations which can cause birth
defects and pregnancy complica'
tions.
DOH promotes, protects and
improves the health of all people
in Florida. For more information
about birth defects surveillance,
please visit the DOH Florida
Birth Defects Registry web site at
www.fbdr.org.
