DCF spokesman faces child porn charges

AMANDA MIMS
Staff Writer

A Department of Children
and Families spokesman is
being accused of creating child
pornography
Albert Zimmerman, formerly
employed at the Wildwood
DCF office, was working for
DCF in Tallahassee until he
was arrested. While working in
Wildwood, he was spokesman
for DCF District 13, which
includes Citrus, Hernando,
Lake, Marion, and Sumter
counties.
Zimmerman, 40, was arrest-
ed Feb. 1 for eight counts of
using a child in a sexual per-
formance, according to
Hillsborough County Sheriff's
Office records.

"Investigators determined
that at least two victims
between the ages of 16 and 17
were solicited by Zimmerman
to perform lewd acts, which
were used by Zimmerman to
create child pornography,"
according to an attorney gener-
al's office press release.
"The criminal investigation
is ongoing and no additional
information is available at this
time."
Zimmerman had been
employed with DCF since 2005,
but has a history that includes
an outstanding warrant in
Texas, a DUI conviction, and a
charge in the Tampa Bay area
for allegedly writing bad
checks.
'There was an outstanding
warrant out of Texas for which
there was no extradition," said

Heather Smith, Florida
Department of Law
Enforcement spokeswoman.
"He also had a previous
Tampa Bay charge for worth-
less checks which was nolle
processed, and he had a DUI
conviction."
The Texas warrant was for
larceny-theft of service, she
said.
DCF Spokeswoman Erin
Geraghty said at the time
Zimmerman was hired, back-
ground checks were not
required for all DCF employ-
ees, only those in caretaker
positions.
"He w~s not in a caretaker
role. Hd had very limited
access to children," Geraghty
said.
In 2006, DCF changed its pol-
icy to include background

checks for all new employees.
"Our policy is pretty strin-
gent right now," she said. "We
really feel this is an isolated
incident"
DCF will be performing
background checks on employ-
ees who have not had one yet,
according to Geraghty.
"Anyone whose file is incom-
plete will be completed."
DCF Secretary Bob
Butterworth has asked FDLE
to investigate whether any chil-
dren in the state's care have
been victimized.
Butterworth issued the fol-
lowing statement:
"The alleged actions of Mr.
Zimmerman are a betrayal of
trust to this Department, its
employees, and the people we
serve ... In light of this incident,
I am asking the Florida

Department of Law
Enforcement to work with the
Department to conduct a thor-
ough investigation to deter-
mine if any child in the.state's
care has been victimized. Mr.
Zimmerman's alleged conduct
is an egregious breach of the
public trust and will not be tol-
erated. He has been terminat-
ed."
Zimmerman's arrest fol-
lowed an investigation by the
Attorney General's CyberCrime
Unit, the Florida Department
of Law Enforcement, the
Tampa Police Department, the
Department of. Children and
Families, and the Federal
Bureau of Investigation.
If convicted, he could face up
to 120 years in prison.
Zimmerman was placed in the
Hillsborough County Jail with
bond set at $120,000.

A- 90-year-old Adamsville
woman and her son and
daughter have been without
a permanent home since a
fire destroyed their mobile
home last week.
For now, Mary Terry, 90,
her daughter, Sharon Lane,
53, and son, William Terry,
49, are staying in a borrowed
travel trailer until they can

make other arrangements.
The fire that destroyed
their home on County Road
508 Tuesday, Jan. 29 started
in the air conditioning unit
around 8 a.m., as William
slept.
"I was in bed asleep and
smelled the smoke," William
said. "I didn't see anything in
the kitchen."
At first, he thought his
mother burned something
while cooking, but he soon

found out otherwise. He got
her out of the house and
then attempted to put out
the fire, but had to go back in
to get her a second time,
when she went inside for
clothes.

"All she had was her night-
gown," he said.
The fire department
arrived quickly and was able
to extinguish the flames, but
the home was destroyed.
By the next day, family

members were there help-
ing tear down the remains of
the home and sifting through
belongings.
"It was so devastating,"
Lane said.
Lane and William, two of

Fair unveils remodeled kitchen Sumter 2nd in state

AMANDA MIMS

The Sumter County
Fd i rgrou ndts' kitchen rdcehtly
got a facelift more than
$80,000 worth of improve-
ments.
"It's a good day," said
Barbara Kane, fairgrounds
manager, at a ribbon cutting
.ceremony for the 50-year-old
kitchen Feb. 1.
"It's been a long time com-
ing."
The remodeling was made
possible by a Tourist
Development Council grant
in the amount of $80,000.
The fair board also put a lit-
tle of its own money into it,
and labor was donated by
Nathan Creach, owner of the
Speckled Butterbean restau-
rant in Webster, as well as
Kane's husband, Roger.
"Everything is new," she
said, and it's a drastic
improvement from the old
kitchen.
"My favorite thing is the
light switch."
Before the remodeling,
"they had an electrical box...

Sumter County voter
turnout soared last week with
more than half the county's
registered voters casting bal-
lots, outnumbering the state
average for voter turnout in
the primary election.
With the state averaging 45
percent for voter turnout last
Tuesday in the presidential
primary, Sumter County
turnout climbed to 56.8 per-
cent. With 55,093 registered
voters in the county, 31,305
voters went to the polls,
according to statistics from
the county's supervisor of
elections office.
The numbers resulted in
Sumter County being second
in the state for the largest per-
centage of voter turnout, said
Sumter Supervisor of
Elections Karen Krauss. Only
Lee County had a larger per-
centage of voters with 57.4
percent
Krauss said 'she believes
the proposed Amendment 1
ballot issue drove voters to
the polls.
"It wasn't just the presiden-
tial candidates, the amend-

ment brought a lot of people
out to vote," she said. "It was
an issue that touched our
pocketbooks and they came
out to vote on it"
Of Sumter voters, 74 per-
cent supported Amendment 1
to reduce property tax. In
comparison, 64 percent of vot-
ers in the state supported the
amendment

Suffering from Heartburn?

If you have heartburn twice a week or more you may have GastroEsophageal
Reflux Disease, also known as GERD, Heartburn is the most common symptom
associated with GERD but you may also experience:

Medical Center

While medication alleviates.the symptoms of heartburn, it does not
restore the natural anatomy and generally doesn't stop disease
progression. If you do not want a life long regimen of medication or
do not want to undergo an invasive surgical procedure, a proven
incisionless option is now available that addresses both the cause
and symptoms of GERD.

-: A new procedure known as EsophyXTM offers a giant leap in
the evolution of the treatment of GERD and focuses on restoring
the natural anatomy of the antireflux barrier. Unlike conventional
open and laparoscopic surgical procedures the EsophyXTM
itransoral incisionless procedure is introduced through the
mouth, not through an incision, making it safer and less
invasive. The procedure takes approximately an hour,
requires an overnight stay in the hospital and has you
typically returning to work within a couple of days.

he results are in, and
Sumter County saw the
sec ond-highest voter
turnout in the state recently dur-
ing the primary election.
That's somewhat surprising,
considering Sumter County is still
a relatively small county com-
pared to many others around the
state.
There are around 55,000 regis-
tered voters in the county, and
more than 31,000 went to the polls
during the primary.
Lee County is the only other
county with a higher voter turnout
for the primary.
In Sumter, Hillary Clinton won
the Democratic race and Mitt
Romney won the Republican race
with 40 percent of the vote. In
Florida, John McCain led the

Republican race with 36 percent
of the vote.
Statewide, the average voter
turnout was about 45 percent The
high percentage of voter turnout
in Sumter, about 58 percent, is no
doubt due to strong voter turnout
in the north end of the county.
The numbers show that this
county is a very politically active
one.
While the final breakdown was
not available at press time, it
appears that a strong contributor
to Sumter's large turnout was
votes cast by residents of The
Villages.
The adult-retirement communi-
ty in northern Sumter County
always has a strong turnout for
elections and it appears that this
election was no different

Jazzercise hits South Sumter High

Energetic physical movement
mixed with lots of fun music is the
way to describe Jazzercise, created
by Jazzercise founder Judi
Sheppard Missett.
Based on sound principles of
exercise and dance physiology,
Jazzercise classes offer a high-
energy workout with an emphasis
on physical fitness.
Patty Jordan, the Sumter County
Jazzercise instructor, volunteered
to teach Jazzercise to all the physi-

cal education classes on Friday.
Jordan has been an instructor for
20 years and is also a substitute at
South Sumter High School. "The
students call me "Miss Jazzercise
Lady" and are always asking me to
teach them some moves, so I decid-
ed to volunteer and teach all PE.
classes Jazzercise. The students
were terrific and really enjoyed
dancing to artists such as Gwen
Stefani, Shakira, Beyonce and
Christina Aguilera. They want me

to come back and teach them more,
that's exciting to me!"

MARTHA MADDOX
If you've been to a restaurant late-
ly, you may have noticed that portion
sizes are huge! Could this be one of
the reasons for the obesity epidemic
in this country? According to
researchers, this may be one con-
tributing factor. Research from Penn
State University and other research
institutions indicates that when
served larger portions, people do
tend to eat more.
This holds true for preschoolers as
well as adults, according to family
album radio's Linda Bobrodff.
So how big are portions these
days? The national heart, lung, and
blood institute compared caloric val-
ues of foods as they were 20 years
ago and today.
They found that a muffin used to
have an average 210 calories, and
now packs a walloping 500! A portion
of spaghetti and meatballs used to
have about 500 calories, and today
you would get over 1,000.
We even can "super size" our
meals if regular portions aren't large
enough!

Strangely, according to
researchers, many people are not
aware that portion sizes today are
larger. This phenomenon has been
called "portion distortion."
The 2005 dietary guidelines for
Americans emphasizes portion con-
trol to promote healthy body weights.
Tips for eating appropriate portions
include:
Using smaller plates;
Serving food on plates rather than
family-style;
Avoiding all-you-can-eat buffets;
and
Sharing an entr6e at restaurants
If you eat slowly and enjoy every
bite, you'll be surprised at how satis-
fying reasonably sized portions of
food can be.

February is Florida Hiking Trails month

Recognizing February as Florida
Hiking Trails Month, the Florida
Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) is joining the
Florida Trail Association to encour-
age Floridians to take advantage of
Florida's extensive trail system and
celebrate the 40th anniversary of the
National Trails System Act.
"February is a great time for
Floridians to promote environmental
stewardship and adopt a healthy
lifestyle by exploring the more than
4,000 miles of trails Florida has to
offer," said DEP's Office of
Greenways & Trails Director Jena B.
Brooks. "We are proud to celebrate
Florida's Hiking Trails Month and
the 40th anniversary of an important
milestone in the preservation of nat-
ural lands and resources."
The National Trails System Act
was first signed into law by President
Lyndon Johnson in 1968 to promote
preservation of the Nation's open-air,
outdoor and historic resources for
public enjoyment. The idea was to
create scenic, historic and recreation
trails that would share the experi-
ences of the Nation's native people
and pioneers and prevent history
from being paved over. Today, the
National Trail System boasts more
than 40,000 miles of trails, including
the Florida National Scenic Trail,
one of eight congressionally-desig-
nated scenic trails in the United
States.
"This legislation created the path-
way for the national trails program
which now consists of eight National

Scenic Trails, 13 National Historic
Trails and approximately one-thou-
sand National Recreational Trails,"
explained Florida Trail Association
Executive Director Deborah Stewart-
Kent. "This year we also celebrate
the 25th anniversary of the Florida
Trail's designation as a National
Scenic Trail."
The Florida National Scenic Trail
is the largest in the state and will ulti-
mately extend 1,400 miles from the
Gulf Islands National Seashore in
the Panhandle to the Florida Keys.
This national treasure includes loop
and linear trails on public lands
throughout Florida. The sections are
built and maintained by volunteers
from the Florida Trail Association, in
cooperation with the U.S. Forest
Service, and include state greenways
and trails such as the Cross Florida
Greenway and the Lake Okeechobee
Scenic Trail.
Initiated by the Florida Trail
Association, Florida Hiking Trails
Month emphasizes fun and fitness
along scenic and diverse trails,
including paved rail-trails, urban
trails through cityscapes and wilder-
ness trails through Florida's award-
winning state parks. Florida's trails
are a match for any fitness plan and
are perfect for walking, biking, hiking
or riding.
The Office of Greenways & Trails
(OGT) manages eight state trails,
including the Marjorie Harris Carr
Cross Florida Greenway, Florida's
longest green corridor stretching 110
miles from the St Johns River near

Palatka to the Gulf of Mexico. DEP,
through OGT, also maintains five rail-
trails, which are railroad tracks
restored and converted to recre-
ational trails for hiking, biking and
skating. Through Florida Forever,
the state's premier land acquisition
program, $4.5 million dollars is spent
annually to purchase land for future
trail areas and build and maintain
Florida's greenways and trails.
The DEP Office of Greenways and
Trails supports Florida Hiking Trails
Month with the following events:
February 14 Students from
Sabal Palm Elementary School will
hike on the Tallahassee-St. Marks
Historic State Railroad Trail
February 16 Blackwater
Heritage Trail Citizen Support
Organization will host Children's
Mardi Gras Walk on the Blackwater
Heritage State Trail in Milton. The
event will feature a family walk and
costume contest
February 23 The Florida'
Greenways and Trails foundation,
Inc. will host Ride-Roll-Run relay on
the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross
Florida Greenway. Teams consisting
of an equestrian, a biker and a hiker
will compete in a relay competition
along the Greenway.

St. Vincent de Paul has groundbreaking

On Feb. 2, a groundbreaking
ceremony took place for the new
St. Vincent de Paul Church
building at 5323 East County
Road 462 in Wildwood.
Joe Junod, one of the founding
parishioners of St Vincent de
Paul Church remarked, "when
my wife and I moved here in
1969 there were not very many
Catholics in the area.
"Following those years, St.
Vincent de Paul has been a
Catholic congregation in
Wildwood since the early 1970's,
when Joe and Emily and several
additional members of the com-
munity gathered in private
homes for Masses. As the con-
gregation grew, Mass was
offered in the Page-Theuss
Funeral Home Chapel for the
next 13 years. At the urging of
the parishioners, the Diocese of
Orlando purchased a 19 acre
tract of land where the present

building was erected in 1993.
Bishop Emeritus Norbert,
Dorsey offered the first Mass
there in 1994. In October of 2005,
the present bishop of Orlando
Diocese, Bishop Thomas
Wenski, announced at the 10th
Anniversary Mass of the St.
Vincent de Paul Mission, that
this Mission church would now
be designated as St. Vincent de P
aul Parish.
Father Peter Sagorski said of
the need for a larger church
building,"From 2002 when we
had only approximately 250
parishioners and two Masses
per week, we have grown to
more than 2000 parishioners
and 20 Masses per week."
The existing building will con-
tinue to be used for worship
until the new building is com-
pleted sometime in the Fall of
2009, when it will then be used
as the social hall, meeting

spaces for our many outreach
programs and parish ministries
and classrooms.
City of Wildwood Mayor Ed
Wolfe said of the building effort,
"This new church will be one of
the most impressive buildings in
the City of Wildwood." He
added, "We are deeply apprecia-
tive of the many outreach pro-
grams brought to this city by this
parish."
County Commissioner and
parishioner Mike Francis said,
"This is a loving and progressive
church community that brings
people together, and I am
delighted to be a part of what's
happening in this church."
The new church will seat 1700
and is to be the largest church in
the Diocese of Orlando.
For information and direc-
tions to the church, call 330-
0220, or visit the parish website
at www.sumtercatholic.org.

It's expected to be completed
by the end of May, she said.
"It's usable now," but there
are some code issues that are
being completed, she said.
Hart indicated the bridge is a
popular spot, explaining that
it's used daily by anglers.
By the end of April, there are
two additional projects that
should be completed one at
the Lake Panasoffkee
Recreational Park, the other at
Lake Okahumpka.
In Panasoffkee, additional
playground equipment is being
added, as well as sidewalks.
The current clay trail will
remain and be renovated, but
the county is adding a multi-use
trail that will be paved and
cover between a half mile and
three-quarters of a mile.
Lighting improvements are
planned for some of the ball
fields and court resurfacing and
recoloring are planned for the
basketball and tennis courts,

according to Hart.
At Okahumpka, a restroom
will be added, as well as plant
identification signs on the walk-
ing trail.
Electricity and water will
also be added to the picnic
pavilion.
Work on the fishing bridge is
being paid by the county's gen-
eral fund, while work on the
other two parks is being funded
through the Department of
Environmental Protection's
Florida Recreational
Development Assistance
Program.
Later in the year, the county
has a fourth project planned.
That project will be renova-
tions at the Royal park and will
include renovation and resur-
facing of the basketball courts,
playground improvements and
the addition of signs.
Hart also responded to ques-
tions regarding a sign at Wysong
Dam, that had been raised by
residents in recent weeks.
The sign reads: "This facility
is no longer maintained by
Sumter County."
Hart said the sign has been
there for two to three years,

since the county's agreement Since then, the maintenance
for upkeep ended at the dam has been the responsibility of
location, the state rather than the county.

"How do I decide which funeral
home to call when the time comes?"

Aside from the requirement that all funeral homes be
licensed by the state, some basic questions you might ask
when selecting a funeral home include: Are they flexible
enough to handle your specific needs? Are decisions made
locally or from an out-of-town corporate office? Are they
full service? Do they sub-contract services such as
cremation or do they provide these options on-site?
Everyone has different priorities and questions about
funeral pre-planning. We invite your questions and we
will respect your priorities. Please call us for a no cost, no
obligation, no pressure appointment to get the facts on
how you can benefit from funeral pre-planning.

SUMTER COUNTY (FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2008, PAGE 7

Mt. Bethel hosts Old Fashioned Day

Minister Clarence Coe took time out to enjoy the morning and
lunch after the annual Old Fashioned Day service at Mt. Bethel
Baptist.

BRENIDA LOCKLEAR
Staff Writer

Stepping back in time and
sharing a taste of yesterday is
the focus for Mt. Bethel
Baptist's annual Old
Fashioned Day.
Coordinated by church
members Elizabeth LaSane
and Rodell Harterson, the
event is designed to "show
the young people what we
had to use, when we were
coming up," LaSane said.
That included things like
"smoothing irons," hand
plows and "rubbos" or wash-
boards, according to LaSane.
There were no electric
irons, mechanical tractors or
gyrating washing machines -
it was all by hand. The iron
was just that a piece of iron,
or metal, with a handle, that
had to be heated, before it
was placed on clothes.
And clothes had to be pres-
sured down a washboard to
get them clean.
There were between 75
and 100 people at the Jan. 22
service, taking time out to
/

look over the bowls, pots and
pans from history.
Members and visitors also
shared a potluck meal after
service.
The menu included every-
thing from cabbage, greens
and rice to sweet potato pie
and peach cobbler.
Other information that sur-
prised youths during the
event was the idea of using
moss for pillows and mat-
tresses something that was
common in earlier days.
LaSane said they began
coordinating the week before
and tried to follow the old
style of service no written
bulletin or agenda for serv-
ice, no music and some of the
older hymns, including
"What a Friend We Have in
Jesus" and "Father, I
Stretched My Hand to Thee."
Mt. Bethel Baptist pastor
Lorenza Robinson and his
wife Joann were on hand for
the Jan. 22 church service,
but Robinson stepped aside
to let visiting Minister
Clarence Coe take the pulpit
and share the message for
the morning.

Rodell Harterson helped Elizabeth LaSane coordinate the annu-
al Old Fashioned Day event at Mt. Bethel Baptist.

Sumter County teenagers to go hungry

A group of Sumter County stu-
dents are joining the 850 million
people around the world who go
hungry every day.
Members of the Lake
Panasoffkee United Methodist
Church youth group, Disciples
for Christ, plan to 'Be Hungry' to
help raise money and awareness
for hungry children.
The teens are taking part in
World Vision's "30 Hour

Famine," program, going with-
out food from 12:30 p.m. on
Friday, Feb. 22 until 6 p.m. the
next day.
Danielle Stewart and Tina
Cash serve as youth leaders for
the teens.
"What I like about the famine
is, it's a national movement to
combat something. The solidari-
ty of the event is really moving,"
Stewart said.

It's designed to bring the
church closer, allowing mem-
bers to "experience the close-
ness of Christ," she said.
As part of the event, the teens
will also build a cardboard vil-
lage outside the church, on the
front lawn.
"We really want to make a
statement about poverty and
hunger," Stewart said.
She's also hoping the village
will attract some additional
donations for the hungry chil-
dren.
The village will "make that
statement that this church and
this group are trying to combat
poverty."
Stewart said she's excited
about the event, but also a little
nervous about the fasting time.
But by "not eating for 30
hours, we kind of get a taste to
truly see what it's like," she said.

"There are people who do this
every day. It's a reality check"
They've even made
allowances for kids with med-
ical issues teens who aren't
able to fast from food will fast
from talking.
Groups also are encouraged to
perform hands-on service proj-
ects during the weekend in
order to make a difference in
their own community as well.
As part of the Famine, the
Disciple of Christ Group has set
a goal to raise $2,230. They are
planning bake sales, demonstra-
tions, and labor projects to raise
money for this cause.
So far the teens have raised
more than $700 from a car wash,
bake sale and raffle.
"For $1 a day you can feed a
child," she said.
"Yes, there are problems here
at home and we're also adjusting

for that," she said, explaining
that the kids take part in helping
to fill the church's food pantry
for those in need in the commu-
nity.
"It's important for those who
are able to help to do so, because
that's what we're called to do as
Christians, but also as human
beings."
Hunger and preventable dis-
ease claim the lives of more than
29,000 children a day more
than 10 million children under
the age of five years.
World Vision is a humanitari-
an organization responsible for
various programs, including the
Revolve Tour, currently making
its way across the nation.
The national event draws
thousands of teens from around
the nation, as they take part in
their communities. This year's
theme is 'be seen. be heard. Be

Hungry.'
"The 30 Hour Famine has a
lasting impact, not just on the
children and families receiving
life-changing food and care, but
also on participants who view
their own potential to affect
change very differently after-
ward," said Debbie Diederich,
national director of the World
Vision 30 Hour Famine.
Funds raised by 30 Hour
Famine participants help feed
and care for children in poverty-
afflicted countries around the
globe. 30 Hour Famine funds
contribute to World Vision's
response in areas where famine,
conflict, and other crises affect
lives.
To make a donation, contact
Stewart or Cash at 793-3438 or
log on to the national site at
www.30hourfamine.org.

Joana Goff, Makayla Johns and Carlie Nelson were busy trying
to urge the crowd in for the fundraising car .wash. The money
raised from the teens through their 30-hour famine event will be
used to feed hungry children.

Crystal River

downs SSHS girls

LARRY BUGG
Times Correspondent

The South Sumter High
girls basketball team played
a strong first half Wednesday,
Jan. 30, against the Crystal
River High team.
The Raiders led 25-16 at
halftime of the opening
round game of the Class 4A-
District 6 Girls Basketball
Tournament at the Pirates'
gym.
Unfortunately, the second-
seeded Pirates (19-4) came
back in the second half to
down the Raiders 44-34.
The Pirates ended the sea-
son for South Sumter (5-16).
Crystal River was to play
Lecanto Friday.
The Raiders coach knew
Crystal River played an
excellent second half.
"They did a good job of
playing, taking us out of our
offense," said South Sumter
coach Gary Russo. "We didn't
execute very well in our half
court man. We played a pret-
ty good game. We did what
we could. I thought we did a
good job on 55 (Michelle
McDonald). We let things
upset us. It's a good experi-
ence.
"We have nothing to be
ashamed of. We are not a
great shooting club. We did a
pretty good job on her
(McDonald) for three quar-
ters. We had problems mak-
ing free throws. We were
playing a match up box and
one on them. They came out
with a lot more intensity.
They are just a better team
than we are."
The visitors used tough
defense and some scoring to
take an 8-7 first quarter lead.
Desiree Mitchell led the way
with four points for the
Raiders. Michelle McDonald
led the Pirates with three
points.
The Raiders were even
better in the second quarter,
outscoring Crystal River 17-9.
Sarah Russo led the way with
five points and Brittany
Bowling had three for the
Pirates.
South Sumter took chances
with long passes and were
able to finish their shots.

Both teams looked like dif-
ferent squads in the second
half.
Crystal River turned on the
scoring. McDonald hit five
points as the Pirates
outscored South Sumter 10-3
in the third quarter. Latasha
Kennerson scored all three
of her team's points in the
third.
McDonald owned the
fourth quarter. She scored 11
of her game-high 21 points
and grabbed five rebounds in
the final period. Crystal
River outpointed the Sumter
County folks 18-6 in the final
quarter. Kennerson led with
four points.
The Raiders hurt them-
selves with missed shots and
30 turnovers.
Crystal River's Briahanna
Jackson scored eight points
but made four steals and six
rebounds.
Kennerson led the Raiders
with 11 points and seven
rebounds. Senior Chelsea
Moffitt had six points and
seven rebounds in her final
high school game.
The Pirates coach praised
his opponents.
"I give them (South
Sumter) all the credit," said
Crystal River High coach
Jere DeFoor. "It was a good
comeback for us.
"She (McDonald) had the
four fouls. They (South
Sumter) played a heck of a
ballgame.
"I was really worried about
the match up. We played two
tight ball games with them."

Wildwood boys win last game

LARRY BUGG
Times Correspondent

No matter what the sport
is, a team likes to win its final
regular season game and go
into the districts with a win-
ning record.
The Wildwood High boys
basketball team did just that
last week.
Wildwood beat Leesburg
High 56-37 Thursday in
Leesburg.
Demetrice McCray led the
Wildcats with 15 points.
DeAndre Mitchell had 13 and
Tadrain Williams had 12
points.
Mitchell had 10 rebounds.
McCray had nine rebounds.
McCray had four steals.
The score didn't indicate

the competitiveness of the
contest.
"It was a pretty tough
game," said Wildcat coach
Von Wilder. "We just led by
one point at the half. It was
really a lot closer than the
final score indicated.
"I thought Leesburg really
got after us. They were
aggressive defensively. It was
our last regular season game.
Both teams were hyped up a
little bit.
"I think the boys did a good
job of weathering the storm
and doing what we had to do
to get the win."
The Wildcats took the mag-
ical 20t triumph against
Leesburg. Wildwood finished
with a 20-4 regular season.
Wildwood has won 18 or 19
during the last few seasons in

the regular season.
"We won 20 games the last
year but the first two games
didn't count," said Moreland.
"We have been around 18 or
19 games."
It's now "play or go home"
time for Wildwood.
Wildwood will play the
winner of Umatilla-The
Villages on Friday at Mount
Dora High School. If the
Wildcats win, they will play
the winner of Mount Dora-
Ocala Trinity Catholic.
Wildwood wound up as the
number one seed in Class 3A-
District 7. Trinity Catholic is
second-seeded and was
recently ranked in the Class
3A top 10 polls.
McCray leads the team in
scoring with over 20 points
per game. Tadrain Williams

is averaging 12 and a half
points. Derrick Williams is
averaging 12 points.
Tadrain Williams and
Derrick Williams are both
averaging seven rebounds
per game.

Beaten dog fighting for his life

ax has been fighting
for his life. Max was
brutally beaten in The
Villages last week. The 10-year-
old dog sustained a compound
fractured leg and extensive
severe life threatening
injuries.
When his owners took Max to
Paws Animal Hospital in The
Villages for a cut leg, Dr.
Barnett suspected animal
abuse when she discovered
other injuries. X-rays revealed
numerous other severe
injuries. Dr. Barnett called

authorities and the Humane
Society/SPCA of Sumter
County was notified. A
Humane Society/SPCA investi-
gator discussed the extent of
Max's injuries with Dr. Barnett,
and the decision was made to
put the dog into protective cus-
tody. The extent of Max's
injuries were far too critical,
and so he was transported to a
specialist.
The Sheriff's Department
did an investigation, and
believed there was probable
cause to arrest when the sus-

Humane Society/SPCA Investigator, Sheri. Evans, transported
Max to safety where he received specialized veterinarian care.

pect's story did not match the
dog's injuries, and then the
suspect made incriminating
statements. Rolando Martinez
was arrested on felony animal
cruelty charges.
Max has recently been
released from intensive care
but continues to need exten-
sive medical treatment. When
the veterinarian was able to
stabilize his condition, ortho-
pedic surgery was performed
on Max's leg and his prognosis
is improving. Metal pins and
plates have been attached to
Max's bones to repair his leg.
The question has been
asked, "Why did the HS choose
not to euthanize Max?" After
consulting with the veterinari-
an, the Humane Society/SPCA
believed Max had a chance to
recover if provided with the
proper medical care. It is the
Humane Society/SPCAs high-
est priority to protect and help
animals that are victims of cru-
elty. It is true that Max would
have suffered and died without
emergency medical treatment.
But Max has a strong will to
live, and he is showing signs of
improvement every day
Max did not deserve to be
beaten so severely. The terror
and abuse he had endured is
horrifying.

Humane Society Investigator, Sheri Evans, visits Max after his life-saving surgery. Max's progno-
sis is improving every day. Continued medical treatment is needed for his full recovery.

We need to help Max heal.
His medical bills are mounting.
The Humane Society/SPCA
needs your donations to help
Max.
Please send a donation to the
Humane Society/SPCA of
Sumter County, PO. Box 67,
Lake Panasoffkee, Fla. 33538.
Mark your donation for Max.
Any excess will be used to help
other victims of abuse.

'Sound of Sunshine' slated

Lake-Sumter Community
College's chapter of the
Florida Association of
Community Colleges (FACC)
presents Sound of Sunshine
Sweet Adelines Chorus.
The Sound of Sunshine
Sweet Adelines
International Chorus will
perform at Lake-Sumter
Community College in the

Paul P Williams Fine Arts
Auditorium at 3 p.m. on
Sunday, Feb. 24. The Sweet
Adelines Chorus two hour
program will feature the best
in female barbershop-style
singing. Come see the beauti-
ful costumes, creative chore-
ography, and hear great
music that showcases barber-
shop harmony.

Tickets are $12 each and
the FACC proceeds benefit
student scholarships at Lake-
Sumter Community College.
The Paul P Williams Fine
Arts Auditorium is located on
the Leesburg campus of
LSCC at 9501 U.S. Hwy 441,
Leesburg. For more informa-
tion or to purchase tickets
call 365-3506.

If you're thinking about
driving over an hour to an
upper class spa for a facial,
you might want to think
again.
At Shanda's, located in
Lake Panasoffkee, the
treatment and services you
recieve are those compara-
ble to anywhere you might
have to drive a distance for.
The moment you step
into Shanda's for a facial,
the smell of lavender and
the sound of her medita-
tion music overcomes any
tension you might have
had.

Candles are lit and the
sound of trickling water
over a waterfall in a nearby
area of Shanda's add to the
calmness of your experi-
ence.
Let the pressure of
everyday life disappear as
you take an hour or more
in an environment of total
pampering and relaxation
for yourself.
Shanda has been doing
facials and permanent
make-up since June of
2007. Shanda is a medical
esthetician at a spa in
Clermont. She hopes that

in the next five years her
facial and permanent
make-up business will go
full time, offering services
five to six days a week
Shanda offers a facial for
everyone, including Acne
facials, Chai Soy,
Hydrating, and Volcanic
Clay Purifying Facials.
At Shanda's, her perma-
nent make-up includes
brows, eyeliner and lips if
you so choose.
Shanda's is t 43 CR 489 B
in Lake Panasoffkee, and
she can be reached at (352)
793-4214 or (352) 458-1194.

Luke Bryan to perform

Georgia native Luke
Bryan will be performing
at the Cowboys Orlando in
Orlando on Saturday,
Feb. 12
Slated for 8 p.m., gener-
al admission tickets are
free.
Even before Capitol
Records Nashville
released his debut single,
'"All My Friends Say," to
radio in early February,
Bryan was already earn-
ing significant media
attention, including being
named one of Billboard
magazine's new faces to
watch in 2007.
He was the only country
music performer selected
for the honor. Bryan was
also included in Country
Weekly's "Who's Hot in
2007" feature and the sin-
gle was chosen as an
iTunes "Discovery
Download" of the week
He was recently invit-
ed to make his debut on
the world famous Grand
Ole Opry in early April
which Luke says was
"truly a dream come
true."
Described as a talented
triple threat vocalist, song-
writer and musician,
Bryan, quickly landed a
publishing deal with top
independent publisher

Murrah Music after mov-
ing to Nashville in 2001.
There, Bryan found his
voice as a writer by stick-
ing close to the life experi-
ences he knows best, as
evidenced on such album
cuts as "Country Man" and
his signature song, "We
Rode In Trucks a
favorite among his
Georgia fans.
He not only wrote songs
for himself but he also had
songs cut by other artists
like fellow Georgian,
Travis Tritt.
He also wrote the three-
week number one song
"Good Directions" for
Billy Currington.
"I'll Stay Me, Bryan's
debut album, was
released on Aug. 13. It's a
fresh and contemporary-
sounding album that's just
country enough to repre-
sent Bryan's rural Georgia
upbringing, but rocking
enough to reflect the years
he spent honing his live
chops at bars and fraterni-
ty houses in his home
state, where he is already
a bona fide star.
Luke has opened shows
for country superstars
Brooks and Dunn,
Sugarland and label-mate
Dierks Bentley to name a
few.

"I don't consider one
thing I've done since I've
been in Nashville work,"
says Bryan.
"I still get shocked all
the time when I meet ran-
dom people and they say
'You're Luke Bryan.'
That's still pretty neat,"
the singer says of his home
state fan base.

visit http://www.luke-
bryan.com.
