The Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County and Sumter County Animal Control removed
more than 120 animals, mostly dogs and cats, from this Coleman residence.

Eleven charged in

federal prison case

AMANDA MIMS

Eleven people have been
accused of a variety of crimes
involving the Coleman Federal
correctional Complex, from
bringing drugs into the prison to
bribery.
Nine of those suspects were
employed at the prison at the
time of the alleged crimes,
All but two of the employees
being charged were guards; the
other two were a prison cook
and a correctional treatment
specialist, said First Assistant
U.S. Attorney Carolyn Adams,
who announced the charges last
.week in Ocala. The girlfriend of
one of those guards and an
Sinfmaitfed 'are also beitig charged.
The charges are the result of
several investigations that
-' -<', ,

began in late 2005 and include
conspiracy to commit bribery,
bribery, providing contraband to
an inmate, acceptance of a
bribe, and possession of contra-
band by an inmate.
Several of the suspects plead-
ed guilty to' charges in
December and January. Three
were arrested Jan. 24 and two
others were arraigned Jan. 24.
"The contraband varied from
cigarettes to heroine," Adams
said. "There were also cellular
telephones," as well as a knife.
"There Was a variety of contra-
band involved."
One of the former guards is
also charged with having sex
with a female inmate.
"That was at the women's
camp," Adams said about -he-*-

Last week, the
SPCA/Humane Society of
Sumter County removed more
than 120 animals from a home
in Coleman.
Acting on an anonymous tip
Jan. 22, officials took 81 cats, 37
dogs, two horses, three ferrets
and one gopher tortoise from
the home of a 43-year-old man,
said Sheri Evans, Humane
Society animal cruelty investi-
gator.
All of the cats have been
euthanized because they were
infected with feline leukemia,
Evans said.

The dogs have been taken to
Humane Society shelters
throughout the state. Nine of
the dogs are in the Sumter
County Animal Control facility
to be put up for adoption. The
home was filthy with animal
feces, according to Evans.
"All of the cats were put
down," she said. "They had a
highly contagious disease." ,
The Humane Society is not
releasing the name of the
owner because it has not been
determined if he will face any
charges.
"The man was completely
cooperative. He realized he had
way too much to handle and
was in over his head," Evans
said.

retirement vacation days doing hard
labor.
Known as the Nomads, the group is an
organization that kicked off about 1988,
according to member and Lake
Panasoffkee project leader George
Tuttle.

At top, Ted Johndrow and other members of the group worked on rewiring lights, sound and
the projector system in the sanctuary. Bottom, Lynn Wightman and George Tuttle are shown
at the light switches.

"It was very sad."
Three dead dogs and cats
were also found on the proper-
ty, according to Evans.
The live dogs are of various
breeds, "from a Great Dane mix
to a Chihuahua and every
description in between," she
said.
Because the county Humane
Society does not have its own
shelter, Evans enlisted the help
of other organizations around
the state.
"We had humane societies as
far as Broward County coming
to get animals. They helped us

The veterinarian notified
the sheriff's office based on
the severity of the dog's
injuries, according to sher-
iff's Lt. Bobby Caruthers.
Martinez initially said the
dog, a fox terrier named Max,
had been injured when he
accidentally hit it when he
slammed closed a sliding
glass door at his girlfriend's
home, Caruthers said.

NOMAD

continued from Page 1
He, his wife Judy and five
other couples have been work-
ing on the Lake Panasoffkee
United Methodist Church for
the past three weeks.
They've done a number of
projects, like rewiring sound,
projection and lighting in the
church sanctuary, and they've
painted from sanctuary to
Sunday school.
Tuttle said the Nomads
began with four or five couples
from the Midwest who felt
there had to be more to retire-
ment than playing shuffle-
board and sitting in the hot
tub.
They approached their local
church and asked what they
'could do for them.
: While the organization
:-began as expansion of an
already existent United
:Methodist organization called
-Volunteers in Mission, the
effort grew and finally became
its own entity.
, 'Anyplace we can drive our

RVs we can have a project,"
Tuttle said.
Some of the Nomads work
one project for the year while
others work more each proj-
ect is three weeks long.
The work list may change
from the time they're request-
ed to the time they actually
arrive on site because it takes
about a year from the initial
contact
Each project has a leader
responsible for contacting the
church to confirm the work list
and determine what tools are
needed, and to contact the
actual Nomads who will be on
site.
Tuttle said the most difficult
project he and Judy have
worked on was the construc-
tion of a 24-foot by 24-foot
block garage to house a church
bus and storage.
It included four pairs of
Nomads, working by hand to
lay and fill blocks for that proj-
ect.
While not all projects are
done for Methodist churches,
there is always a link of some
kind, Mrs. Tuttle said.
For example, they may be

doing work for residents in an
area, but the host is a
Methodist church.
As for the Tuttles, they began
with the Nomads in 1996 after
a month in Arizona in their RV
The projects have taught
them new skills and given
them a lot of time with other
Christians.
"It's helped us grow spiritu-
ally," said Mrs. Tuttle.
They share good and bad
times together, supporting
each other
As a group, they also meet
for devotions each morning
before they get to work they
take turns leading. They begin
at 8 a.m. and spend about 30
minutes together. They also
discuss the day's work plan
before getting started on the
actual work
When the project is over, it's
not always easy to leave -
they've formed bonds with the
people they've met on projects
and they typically work with
different couples on each proj-
ect.
But they don't like to say
goodbye instead, they. say,
"See ya down the road."

PRISON

alleged incident that resulted
in the sex charge. "The others
were at the prison facility."
In prison, a pack of ciga-
rettes is worth anywhere from
$100 to $350, Adams said.
"Cellular telephones were
also popular items and those
could go for as much as 2,000
(dollars) on up."
In some instances, the
money transactions happened
outside of the prison, with
inmates' family members.
"When contraband is intro-
duced into a facility, you have
people vying for the product,"
said Department of Justice
Special Agent in Charge
Teresa Gulotta-Powers.
"It creates a great deal of
tension. Fights can break out
People's lives can be jeopard-
ized. It compromises the
integrity of the entire facility,"
Gulotta-Powers said.
Five of the eleven suspects
pleaded guilty to charges. Two

of the five are from Sumter
County: Timothy Dixon, 33,
Wildwood, charged with
bribery of a public official, and
Gerald Graham, 27, Bushnell,
charged with attempting to
provide contraband to an
inmate. Graham was sen-
tenced this month to two years'
supervised probation.
The maximum punishment
for the bribery charge is up to
15 years in prison and
$250,000.
Other suspects are:

rectional officer, nine counts
of providing contraband to an

Our VOICE

New farmers market:

A great idea for county

he Sumter County
Extension Office has come
up with a great idea that not
only should be interesting, it
should also be healthy.
On Feb. 9, a new farmers market
is coming to Bushnell thanks to
the extension office. The agency is
launching the market with a pri-
mary focus on locally grown foods.
Organizers are seeking produc-
ers of anything from fruits and
vegetables to dairy and meat
The new market will be about a
quarter mile east of Interstate 75
on State Road 48. It will be open
every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. and continue until the begin-
ning of May.
As a strong agricultural commu-
nity, Sumter County residents
should reap substantial benefits
from the new market Typically,
market prices are lower and pro-
duce tends to be fresher than what

you'll find in many grocery stores.
It's also a great way to support
local farmers and growers and
feel a stronger link to the local
agricultural community. There
are many small producers in
Sumter County who are likely to
view this market as beneficial,
because it provides them with an
additional way to market their
products.
The booth rental price is also
reasonable. It is $15 a week with
vendors providing their own
tables and tents.
For growers interested in learn-
ing more about the market, con-
tact Susan Kelly, director of the
county agricultural extension
office, at 793-2728.
This idea has the potential to
flourish into a great reality not
only for producers, but,, also for,
local residents .

Isn't that
what we did?
A Jan 24 letter from retired Dr.
George W Fellendorf concluded by
saying: "I feel comfortable in sup-
porting Governor Huckabee and
encourage others to do so too."
Since the body of the letter offered
no clue as to the political philosophy
of Mike Huckabee, we are left to
speculate that the inspiration for
this statement is fixed solely in the
content of the one preceding it,
which reads:
"I felt like I was part of a real grass
roots effort to elect a dedicated
Christian man to the most powerful
office in the world in 2008.
"I liked that."
Whoa! Hold it right there. Isn't that
exactly what we did in 2000? And,
after we should have known better,
again in 2004?
I can't say I particularly liked that.

amendment?
Recently in Sacramento, Gov.
Schwarzenegger declared a fiscal
emergency in California and
released his proposed budget which
proposal would close an estimated
gap of $14 billion by cutting educa-
tion funds by 10 percent, releasing
22,000 inmates and closing 48 state
parks.
He also proposed cuts and freezes
in funding for children of welfare
recipients, elderly, blind and dis-
abled.
Question? Will Florida municipal-
ities and counties rush into place
additional taxes (fire, etc.) to make

up the anticipated shortfall of Gov.
Crist's championed Constitutional
Amendment?
Or possibly will we fall in the
direction of California?
As Florida Tax Watch recently
advised, "when in doubt leave it
out" The ball is now in our court!

Changing
One Sumter
A history of Sumter County has
been written by the Wikipedia organ-
ization.
They state that Sumter County had
a nickname that was given to the
county because the region was
known for its lawless nature and for
being a haven for many moonshin-
ers, crooks and outlaws.
I do believe that the present com-
missioners who have been voted into
office by all the people in the county
have given all the good and honest
people in this county the opportuni-
ty to take steps to alter this historical
condition of Sumter County.
I do not live in The Villages. I live
in the "other" part of the county. I
have been subjected to the "histori-
cal conditions" that still exist in
Sumter County.
However, I appreciate the efforts
of the commissioners to make the
necessary changes to alleviate the
past "historical conditions" in all
areas of this county. In order to reach
that goal, we need to continue to live
together as One Sumter County.
I do not think that we should go
"back" to the future. We need to go
"forward" to a future that combines
the efforts of all the people to make
Sumter County one that is free from
the past historical elements of injus-
tice.

Now more than ever in the his-
tory of Sumter County, the resi-
dents are divided, one against the
other.
Most of the animosity stems
from the realization that the fair
and equitable treatment desired
by all citizens has not occurred
with the enactment of One Sumter,

and this serves as a barrier to thl
unification of our citizens.
With the expansion and devel-
opment in the north of the county,
and the influx of residents and
businesses, the modernization
and improvement of the county is
an undeniable fact.
The benefits the Village devel-
opment has brought to the county
as a whole is tremendous. [
With the population in that area
growing as it has, no one can deny
the need for those residents to
receive fair representation. ,
That same concern should he
extended to all county residents.,
With an at-large voting system in
place, all the voters of Sumter
County question the fairness in
the loss of the ability to duly elect
a local representative who will
represent their best interests.
As a result of those concerns, wbe
'are seeking to place a referendumii
on the Nov. 4, 2008 ballot to
address this imbalance.
A vote to rescind the at-large
voting initiative and reinstate the
district's only voting procedure i$
an effort to reestablish the fair
and equitable treatment of all
Sumter County citizens.
We are witnessing this process
of returning to single district vot-
ing in several counties in our
state.
This is being done by citizens
across Florida in an effort to
regain their constitutional rights,
privileges and equal representa-
tion, and to return county govern
ment to the people. <

Wildwood hoop boys top Citrus

., LARRY BUGG

'"If the Wildwood High boys
1Asketball team needed a good
Reference, they found an oppos-
,ihg coach who did and will glad-
4y sing their praises.
-' Citrus High head boys basket-
ball coach Tom Densmore just
had to admire the Wildcats
Monday night
::KThe Wildwood High team
shot out to an 18-6 first quarter
lead en route to a 76-61 non-
c6nference, non-district victory
over the Canes at the Citrus

High gym.
Wildwood won its 10th
straight victory and is now 19-4
for the season. Citrus is now 14-
8.
Wildwood High head coach
Von Moreland was happy to get
that 10th straight victory and
happy his team did not let up.
"It feels good," said
Moreland. "We had good ball
movement tonight."
The Canes coach was really
impressed with the Wildwood
team.
"They are very good," said
Densmore of the visitors from
Sumter County. "Wow. They are

better than the first time we
played them. They shot the ball
tremendously. They hit two
threes right off the bat and that
threw us into a tailspin. Tadrain
Williams, No. 21, hit everything
he shot We cut into the lead a
couple of times but it's hard
when they are scoring every
possession to do much with it
They went on spurts when they
scored five or six possessions in
a row. We had defenders there. I
thought we were defending
okay. They hit everything. I
don't think I've seen any team
shoot like they did tonight
"They didn't have any letups.

Wildwood boys beat Trinity

"The first quarter was 20-9
and I am thinking if we don't
toughen up enough, this could
get ugly We cut it down to six.
They certainly shot the ball
well."
Citrus was to play Brooksville
Central there tonight
The very athletic Wildcats
forced many turnovers and dis-
played good ball movement
during much of the game.
Wildwood took a 20-9 first
quarter lead with Tory Davis
scoring seven points. Nathan
Pullen and Trent Shelton both
scored three points each for the
Canes.

The Canes fought back in the
second quarter and were only
outscored by two points, 23-21
in the second quarter. Shelton
had eight points in the period
for the Canes while Justin
Akeem led the Wildcats with
seven points.
Wildwood had a 43-30 lead at
halftime.
The Canes didn't give up and
outscored the visitors 19-17 in
the third quarter. Pullen and
Craig Augustine both scored six
points in the period. Tadrain
Williams led Wildwood with
eight points.
Wildwood put the game away

76-61

in the last quarter, outpointing
the Canes 16-12. Augustine and
David Wheeler both scored four
points for the Canes. Derrick
Williams led Wildwood with
five points.
Augustine led Citrus with 12
points and Pullen and Shelton
both scored 11 points.
Wildwood had excellent bal-
anced scoring with four players
in double figures. Tadrain
Williams topped all scorers
with 20 points. Demetrice
McCray, who averages 20 points,
scored 15. Davis and Derrick
Williams both scored 12 and
Akeem had 11.

Wildwood High's basketball
f6am boosted their winning
streak to nine games by winning
Awo games last week.
, One of them was a major vic-
tory over Ocala Trinity Catholic.
iEhat victory gave Wildwood
either the one or two seed in the
upcoming district tournament at
Mount Dora High next week
Tuesday, the Wildcats beat
, local rival South Sumter High
i60-24. Demetrice McCray had 24
points and eight steals to lead
the Wildcats. Tadrain Williams
had 14 points and 10 rebounds
.and Derrick Williams had 11
Jd eight boards. Tory Davis
d seven rebounds, an impres-
e total for a point guard.
avis also had three assists.
SeAndre Mitchell had seven
s eals and four assists.
The game was frustrating for
the shooters.
"We got off to a slow start,"

said coach Von Moreland. "The
score was 4-2 in our favor after
the first quarter. We missed our
first 16 or 17 shots. We were ice
cold that night. We did warm
up."
Friday, they beat Ocala Trinity
Catholic, a state-ranked team,
57-56 in Ocala. Trinity Catholic
was 18-3. Wildwood is now 18-4.
Both are 7-1 in district play.
"We got a steal with 30 sec-
onds up to go that," Moreland
said. "Tadrain Williams scored.
That put us up by two. They went
to their big guys. One of their lit-
tle guys was fouled. He was at
the line with two shots. He made
the first and missed the second
one.
"We escaped that one.
"They beat us by eight at our
place earlier this season. That
might be our biggest win. In my
book, I don't consider it an
upset. We might have a chance
or two to play them again. It was
a hard fought win. Both teams
battled. They wanted it because

they wanted the number one
seed. It will come down to a coin
flip. Hopefully, we will be lucky."
McCray led with 24 points and
five steals. Derrick Williams had
12 points and eight rebounds.
Tadrain Williams had 10 points.
Monday, they were to play
Citrus High in Inverness.
The Wildcats will play
Leesburg Thursday there for the
season finale.
McCray is averaging around
21 points per game. Derrick
Williams and Tadrain Williams
are averaging 12 points.'
Wildwood will play Friday
Feb. 8 against either the Villages
or Umatilla if they win the coin
flip. If they don't win the coin
flip, they will play Mount Dora.
The district tournament will be
in Mount Dora.
If Wildwood wins the Friday
game, they will be in the
Saturday championship game.

The South Sumter High
girls basketball team lost two
games last week to finish off
their regular season.
The South Sumter High
girls basketball team is now 5-
16 overall and 4-10 in district
play. They are seventh seeded
in the district.
Monday, Jan. 21, they lost to
Mount Dora Bible 49-45.
Freshman guard Latasha
Kennerson had 19 points to
lead the Raiders.
"It was a pretty good game,"
said coach Gary Russo. "Last
time, they beat us by 38. We
had a lead but couldn't hang

on at the end. It was a huge
improvement for us. Mount
Dora Bible ended up 17-4. We
continue to play well. We
could have won the game with
a little more effort at the end."
Tuesday, Wildwood beat
South Sumter 55-39 in
Wildwood. This was also an
improvement for the Raiders.
"With four minutes to go in
the game, we had the lead
down to eight," the coach said.
"Wildwood is the number one
seed in their district. They
ended up 18-6. We were down
27-10 at half. We showed a lot
of heart and effort. We only
have seven players and we
just got tired. It shows that
with four freshman, we are

games

Helping you]

By Sarah Hensley
Sumter extension office
4-H coordinator
If you are like most parents
you probably wonder, "What
are my kids doing after
school?"
As you may know, after-
school time are from, the
hours of 3 to 5 p.m., or when-
ever you get home from work.
These hours alone present
opportunities for youths to
either be productive or non-
productive, and may give
your kids an opportunity to
participate in unsafe activi-
ties.
Maybe you have heard of
"latch-key kids" and even if
you have "good kids," they
can still benefit from having
a productive after-school
activity. A recent Study of
Positive Youth Development
(2007) says that there are
three things necessary for
young people to thrive:

1. To d

Improvements made at Animal Control

-~CrjiftrCHArrTTER

A nimal Control and the
Humane Society/SPCA
A of Sumter County are
two separate enti-
ties. Animal Control
is a governmental
agency funded by the
county with our tax
dollars. The
H u m a n e
Society/SPCA is a
nonprofit volunteer
organization funded
by donations only
Over the past few
years, improvements LIN
have been seen at GR
Animal Control. GR
Under the manage-
ment of John Hezlep, animals
are treated humanely, and
every effort is made to find
homes for adoptable animals
that come through the facility
each year. Just in a little over a
year's time, the facility was able
to save 146 cats and 458 dogs,
through not only their own
adoption program, but by net-
working with our local Humane
Society and other rescue
groups. Still in 2007, 1063 cats
and 865 dogs were euthanized.
Although some were sick or
deemed dangerous, others lost
their lives due to the pet over-

N
A

population problem.
The Animal Control facility is
centrally located in the county,
in Lake
Panasoffkee. It is
the mission of
Animal Control to
protect the health,
safety, and welfare
of the citizens and
animals of Sumter
County and to pro-
mote justice and
equity in the
enforcement of state
and local laws for
IDA control and protec-
WVES tion.
Mr. Hezlep, his
secretary, two ken-
nel workers and two Animal
Control officers keep a busy
schedule. Just in the last quar-
ter of 2007, the facility handled
1047 incoming calls, 401 outgo-
ing calls, 281 office visitors,
1042 kennel visitors, 896 com-
plaints, and the kennel workers
cared for over 500 animals. And
two Animal Control officers are
on the road covering 574 square
miles of territory.
We have seen recent
improvements, such as a wind
break barrier for the dogs in the
outside kennels, crates for dogs

Carol LeGrand passes out blankets to dogs on cold winter
days.

to curl up in, wood platforms to
allow dogs to get off the cold or
wet cement. And of course,
blankets are provided for every
dog on cold days and nights.
Animal Control gratefully
accepts old blankets from car-
ing citizens, and the Humane
Society/SPCA continues to col-"
lect donated blankets through-
out the year for Animal Control.
I am happy to report that
more improvements are on the
horizon for Animal Control.
Because the cats are housed in
a climate-controlled building,
our concerns have been for the

welfare of the dogs in the wid-
ter months. Now in the archi-
tectural stages, plans are being
made for a new building which
will have inside kennels for
many of the dogs.
Animal Control is doing its
part to help animals. The
Humane Society/SPCA and
other rescue groups are doing
what they can to help animals:
It is up to us to be responsible
citizens, and abide by the leash
law, vaccinate our pets, and
spay and neuter to put a stop to
the pet overpopulation prob-
lem that plagues our county.

Agriculture: Weekend focus

Folks interested in
farming, ranching or a
little market selling
were on hand last Saturday
for the 2008 AGRItunity,
where agriculture was the
focus.
Designed to provide new
and innovative information
in areas of agriculture, the
event included several
exhibitors, as well as a num-
ber of speakers who present-
ed information on every-
thing from how to grow it to
knowing your market
Exhibitors ranged from
the Sumter County
Cattlemen's Association who
offered samples of a new
beef meatball and the
coupons to help purchase it,
to Hillside Orchard a com-
pany that sells jellies, jams,
sauces and more.
But there's a twist to their
product they not only grow
and make their foods, they
also offer a chance for retail-
ers to label the product as
their own.

Other exhibitors included
tractor, truck and farm
equipment dealers, book
vendors and more.
Hosted by the Sumter
County Extension Office and
surrounding counties, some
of the focal points of the con-
ference included informa-
tion and research gathered
by the University of Florida
Institute of Food and
Agricultural Science (IFAS).
The organization special-
izes in Florida agriculture
and the event speeches
include learning markets,
hydroponic growing and a
list of other subjects.
University representatives
also exhibited agriculture
books on a variety of sub-
jects.
Next on the agenda for the
extension office is hosting
the Farmer's Market
For more information on
future events, contact the
extension office at 352-793-
