Commissioners will consider the recommendation and make a decision about the permit at their Jan. 24 meet- ing. In the meantime, the pro- posed project has generated some strong concerns from residents who live near the proposed site and those con- cerned about the environmen- tal impact of a landfill. Since plans for the project were first presented to the county in October, a growing number of people have voiced opposition to it. During that time, the project has been rescheduled for consideration several times. The property is located at the end of County Road 529, in the vicinity of the intersec- tion of County Road 475 and County Road 470. This is because the Sumter Board of County Commissioner's hunt for a new administrator "worked pretty smoothly," according to Dew. Taking over for him on Jan. 9 will be 37-year- old Bradley Arnold, who stepped down as administra- tor of the Whitfield Board -. of County , Commissioners in Dalton, Ga. to take the posi- tion. Dew's last Arnold day after work- ing over 30 years for the county will be Jan. 6. He has been serving as county administra- tor since 1983. As for Dew's plans as a new retiree, he says he has no pro- fessional work planned and no other plans yet besides relax- ing at home. Inside deputies spotted 44- year-old Jacqueline Thompson, Tony Sammons, 36, and "a multicolored glass pipe in plain view," he said. "Tfiey read all three their rights and while questioning them about the pipe they observed two more pipes in the-living room," he said. One of the suspects, Jacqueline Thompson, 44, reached into a box containing syringes for insulin shots and something else, Caruthers said. "The lid popped off and they observed three large bags of a green leafy sub- stance," which was later con- firmed to be marijuana, he said. Altogether, the "green leafy substance" weighed 48 grams. In one of the pipes, officers found four grams of marijua- na. Sloan, Thompson, and a third suspect, Tony Sammons, 36, were all charged with pos- session of marijuana over 20 grams and possession of para- phernalia. In addition to the cocaine, the deputies also found mari- juana, methamphetamines, a scale, a radio frequency bug (concealed listening device) detector, and a .380-caliber handgun concealed under the steering wheel, according to Caruthers. This was a major decision open- ing the door for Sumter County to become the cement plant capital of the United States. 'There are only 108 cement plants in the United States and now the Sumter County BOCC seems intent upon allowing three cement plants to be built and to operate in Sumter County'. The EPAs toxic release invento- ry indicates that burning haz- ardous waste, coal and tires in cement plants produces a number of toxic air emissions such as mer- cury, sulfuric acid, lead, barium, manganese, chromium, toluene, 1,3-butadiene, styrene, and dioxin (to name a few). Downright Swell Productions is presenting a screening of the feature film "The Essence of Irwin" Friday, Jan. 13, at the Wildwood Community Center. Pre-show is at 6:30 p.m. and the screening begins at 7. Down Sw Produc The movie is set present in fictional Irwin, screen Texas, but was filmed in Sumter, thefe Orange, and Lake film counties. Essen Leesburg native Darren McDaniel, IT' who wrote, direct- ed, and produced Irwin said much of it was shot in Wildwood and some in Oxford and Coleman. The movie's Web site sums it up like this: A national advertising firm hires a sociologist-filmmaker and cameraman to get docu- mentary-style footage of the tiny town and capture "The Essence of Irwin," for a secret new ad campaign. After four months, when the firm comes to Irwin to unveil the mystery project, "the events that unfold prove to be the most surreal of all. Tables turn more than once as the underdogs take a pounding but struggle to get the last bark" But the real "essence" of this "alleged documentary" can be seen at the screening in a few weeks. McDaniel, 36, said he chose Wildwood and the surrounding areas for a couple of reasons. "I just felt like the area lent itself well for being a stand-in for Texas," he said. "The other thing is that I wanted to shoot around my home where I knew people. It would have been very difficult to try to go to Texas and start from scratch there." McDaniel said folks from the city were supportive during the filming, including City Manager Jim Stevens and Mayor Ed Wolf. "When we first came down, I met with the two of them. I think they were intrigued-it just made it a lot easier." The production office for Irwin was located in a building right across from right Wildwood City Hall 7ell while- they were filming there. tionis i Some scenes in the ting a film were shot at ing of Wildwood High School. nature After 18 months 'The of filming, the movie premiered ice of in Chicago at the in` Gene Siskel Film Center. McDaniel has high hopes for Irwin, his first film. "My goal has been to get some kind of national theatri- cal distribution," he said, but it may go straight to DVD. He said he's going to start pushing for national distribution in February. "It's very difficult to do that as a first time filmmaker." For McDaniel, the project is a success. He said it combines his educational background in Southern studies, sociology, and film. "I think I got everything and more that I would ever want out of it." Additional information and the movie trailer can be found at www.essenceofirwin.com. A limited number of free tickets are available through the City of Wildwood, 330-1330. r fro Salation Army Dear friends and supports, The caring support you have given to so many others has been a continuing encouragement and blessing to Eleanor and I and all our '- workers and volunteers. Without your help we would not have been able to assist more than 150 families this past Thanksgiving and Christmas. Each day has brought new joys and blessings along with the challenges. Every day, Eleanor and I are thankful we live in such a caring community. The qualified families, seniors and disabled adults who asked for assistance were given food, toys, clothing and a reminder that this is the time to thank our friends for their help. The many gifts reminded us all not only of the spirit of giving but the reason why we give. We are still celebrating God's great Gift to us .. His Son Jesus. We easily remember the gifts that were given to Him in honor of His birth; the gold, frankincense and the myrrh. Perhaps we wonder about the gifts and why they would be given to an infant. Today we might think more along the lines of disposable diapers, soft blankets and cuddly stuffed animals. We have heard many explanations about those "First Christmas Gifts", but we must surely remember that His gift of love and salvation was His gift and promise to us. That is why the celebration goes on even when the holiday is past. His gift is truly the one that "keeps bn giving" because it is eternal. Eleanor and I hope that you have received the joy of His presence and the gift of His salvation. If not, you are not too late... no application is needed... no documents required, simply an open heart and an invitation to Him. We must be sure to mention that this year we had volunteers who represented the Dunkum and Steller families and the St. Catherine Baptist Church, who "rang the bells" in honor of the late Daniel Stefler. Daniel was only fifteen years old When he died suddenly last summer. He was one of our most enthusiastic kettle workers and also had a ministry that touched many lives at his church. This seemed an appropriate way to remember him and his enthusiasm for The Salvation Army and the people we help. It was very moving to see so many family members and volunteers ring the bells in his honor and also to see the many supporters who came by the kettle and gave their donations. Daniel, your memory was well served. While we prepare to enter the New Year, we are remembering the many individuals, churches, companies and anonymous "Angels" who have made this a "Most Wonderful Time of the Year". This week we are especially remembering the sponsors who made this column possible. Those sponsors are "Anonymous", Cindy Clark (Cindy's Chevrolet), Mr. & Mrs. Rupert Dunkum (All American Reality, Mrs. Cheryl Purcell and Mr. Justin Purcell (Purcell Funeral Home), Reggie Caruthers (Oxford Land Company), and Diana B. Couillard (Dibarco Building Corporation). Thd New Year will bring its own challenging and opportunities. We hope that you will continue to remember those who will need help long after the Christmas and holiday season have ended. We are always glad to have new supports and especially volunteers. If you would like to become part of this caring ministry, and want to know how you may help, please call us at The Salvation Army, 352.568.2284. Master Gardener training will be held at the Sumter County Extension Office in Bushnell each Wednesday from Feb. 1 through April 19, 2006. Most training sessions will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Training will include topics such as basic plant science, plant identification, vegetable gardening, fruit culture, flow- ers, woody ornamentals, surf management,- pest manage- ment, and basic landscaping. Principles of the Florida Yards & Neighborhood (FYN) Program will be included in the training. Master Gardeners give their volunteer hours to county extension offices in many ways. In Sumter County Master Gardeners help exten- sion staff, test soil samples, volunteer at plant clinics, work at the youth garden, and attend special events such as, the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. Applications for a limited number of openings in the class are now being taken in the county extension office. As part of the Master Gardener training, each par- ticipant has access to one of the best gardening references for Florida. It is a compilation of Extension Service fact sheets and bulletins that apply specifically to our unique climate. The cost for the class and materials is $95.' So, as with all other Medicare beneficiaries, one would have to closely monitor the formulary (drugs) and stipulations of a plan. So, quite clearly Medicare is aware that Medicare beneficiaries have been receiving VA prescrip- tions. According to the VA, it clearly states that you may join Part D, yet the VA also indicates that its coverage is approved as credible, mean- ing no penalty. However, at this late date, the VA hasn't a clue as to.how it \\ill let Medicare know that you are receiving VA meds, to prove credible coverage! The government is trapped with this one. Either way, it will not cause a penalty, and you may have both. When in doubt, punt! Lake.Panasoffkee Elementary is proud to announce our Student of the Month list for November. The meeting also included a request for volunteers who can help the kids work on FCAT testing. They had one of the largest turnouts in a long time, said PTO parent Trish Foster. "There was lots of school spirit! We opened with a prayer and the pledge to the flag to show our support to our military." "We then presented our Student of the Month Awards, Pawsome Students, Outstanding Person of the Month and then our essay win- ners." The Creative Academy took over next, presenting the Christmas Program and then the violin group played. After that, the PTO served Christmas Cookies, hot choco- late, apple cider and coffee. Each of the students also received an ornament to make or take home. Families were encouraged to bring all sister and brothers of any age. The PTO is working toward making their meetings a great family event, according to Foster. The entire staff was given Christmas poinsettias from the students in an event sponsored by the 2005-2006 PTO Team. Foster notes that the PTO is extremely grateful to Gloria Croft and her staff for the encouragement they've given. She said it's been an awe- some school year for them. The violin players accompa- nied the group on the chorus Auld Lang Syne. The group practices on Friday, during physical edu- cation and are learning to accompany songs and learning to play at least two tones on each string until they can play a scale. They are learning posi- tions on each string. -s sosasssoas slas ,i l .Dr. A. Leigh McBride, DVM I *. Welcome visitors that come from many distant parts of the world escaping the rav- ages of a savage JAMIE cold winter envi- Outdoo ronment they can- - not tolerate. Nope I am not talking about the multitudes of two- legged visitors who drive fancy gas or diesel powered automobiles I am referring to the ones who arrive here by flying and I am not referring to flying on the massive noise-making jets that so often frequent our blue skies. The frequent fliers I am talking about are the kinds of visitors that are beautifully adorned with all of the bril- liant and vivid colors of an afternoon rainbow following an early spring rain and most of these visitors can sing right along with Gods angels. My friends, I am talking about the untold numbers of songbirds that join us to spend their winters here in Florida. Beautiful songbirds that many of us humans for the most part take for granted and some folks do not even take notice of their presence at all. Songbirds are one of God's greatest gifts to us and they are a blessing to marvel at as we enjoy the special natural music they provide us with, which cannot be matched anywhere even close by the greatest of man-made musi- cal talents. I enjoy watching all kinds of different birds hanging around my house - and I feed them all year long to make sure they keep coming around. There are all types ., of different bird feeds and feeders to dispense- the feed with and it really does not make much differ- ence as to what ADAMS kind or how you *Writer feed the birds. .- --. They will show up and enjoy the feast and the more you feed the more birds will show up. Many folks have some par- ticular species of birds they like more than another and since different species of .birds eat different types of food certain species can be attracted by putting out feed that the preferred species most desires. There are all kinds of good books available to help iden- tify the different species of birds and most have sections of the book relating to where the birds come from and where they nest along with what they prefer to eat. Many folks keep a journal or log on the different species of birds that show up and the date they arrive. A good pair of binoculars is a must to really enjoy the birds from a distance and I just got a brand new pair of 8.5 X 50 binoculars for Christmas made by the Alpen Company that are as clear as a bell to'look through and my new binoculars really make the brilliant colors stand out big time., For my part, I like all kinds of different birds and I put out a variety of different feed for them and thus I attract many different species. One winter I had over twenty dif- ferent species coming to feed on a daily basis. We all have just celebrated Christmas and one of my favorite classic movies was shown sev- Thefrequer eral times talking ab and it is the kinds of isi mo viee where the beautiful little boy with all of t wanted a BB gun real and vivid bad and afternoon w e n t through all kinds of antics try- ing to convince his parents to get him one for Christmas. Well folks, the reason I bring the movie up is when I was a young boy I got a BB gun when I was some where around ten years old and while I never knew of any one getting an eye shot out with a BB gun it probably for sure did happen many times. What my buddies and I would do is hunt birds with our BB guns and you can bet we did a lot more hunting and shooting at than we did in actually hitting many birds. But we sure tried. If that was to happen in these days there is no telling what would happen to the young culprits and the par- ents too for that matter but back in those days there were not very many folks in Florida and it was an accept- ed way of life. Anyway, I would get very upset if I discovered anyone shooting song birds these days and thankfully it does not happen anymore. it C l( Laws are much different now and people seem to care much more about taking care of our wildlife. As you might already know, cardinals are my favorite songbirds but mockingbirds come in a close second. I like all kinds of woodpeck- t fliers I am ers also and ut are the s h u g s favorite is ,ors that are bluebirds. V adorned We have he brilliant se v e.r a 1 houses for Colors of an them to nest rainbow, in where we live. Bluejays are common at our place in the wintertime and they aggravate the rest of the birds but I don't mind them feeding right along with the rest of them. They are bullies but they are no match for the mockingbirds. They are not afraid of them at all. Robins are another favorite bird I like to see and they are a sure sign that win- ter is getting close to coming to an end here in Florida. They feed on worms and insects and when the worms and insects start to become available with warmer weather the robins show up and they are not around too long before they move on to: their spring nesting grounds wherever that might be. Somewhere I think I read that robins follow the cold weather down and that makes sense as they have to follow their food supply and stay just ahead of the cold weather as it moves south. , Anyway, the songbirds are here and I am glad because you know they just make any day a little bit better. MaryAnne changes her outdoor outlook MaryAnne has change of heart for indoors Hi, my name is MaryAnne. I thought I wanted to be a barn kitty, but I have had a change of heart. Hey a girl is enti- tled to change her mind! After a life altering experience at Petco, my New Year's wish is to live indoors. I am looking for a home that will appreci- ate my inner cat. A home where I can strut around and have the people occasionally pet me and enjoy my compa- ny I am the quintessential cat. You can never own me, but I would be happy to share your home. Together we can dis- cover the joy of feathers, and the fun of chasing invisible mice. I will teach you the art of lounging' in a ray of sun- shine, and the simple pleas- ure of just being what you were intended to be you! I am independent, I am invincible, I am MaryAnne - and I am looking for a home for the New Year. Could it by yours? So many animals like me need homes. What would we do without the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter? We might be wandering the streets hungry, cold, and scared. We might be sick or injured. Some of us have suf- fered abuse. I was one of the lucky ones who were taken in by the Humane Society/SPCA They gave me a warm bed to sleep in, delicious food, and someone to care for me. And they promised that they would fine me a good home - no matter how long it took I don't have to every worry about my time running out. I will always have a place to stay until I found a home - always! The Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County is our ray of hope, our chance for a new life. But the Humane- Society/SPCA needs some help too. They need some financial assistance so that they can continue to help us animals. Please send a dona- tion to the Humane Society/SPCA. Send it to PO. Box 67, Lake Panasoffkee, FL 33538. All of us homeless kit- ties and dogs are depending on you please don't let us down. So, if you would like tp: adopt me, e-mail the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County at: humane@sum.net or mail in your request for me to: PO. Box 67, Lake Panasoffkee, FL 33538.
