CAMPUS INN
News of Port St. Joe High School
By MARTHA COSTIN

Thought For The Week
I, with my warm coat and shoes
Cannot know the fearful dread of
winter,
The bleak numbness of penetrating
cold.
Cod, give me sympathy.
I, with my alert and ordered mind
Cannot know the dark horror of
ignorant fear
And mental low estate beset by un-
known terrors
God, give me understanding.
I, with my young and active body
Cannot know the dull pain of age
or disease
The futility of life filled with
despair
God, give me courage.
I, with my eyes wide-open in the
wonder of young life
Cannot know the long dull pain of
unceasing tears
Or drooping heart heavy with
sorrow.
God, give me tenderness.
I, with my strong hands and nimble
fingers

WHY $50 BILLION?
(Second of a series)
President Eisenhower's $50
billion Grand Plan for highway
improvement is the biggest public
t works program ever proposed by
an American President.
Up to now, the biggest was the
public works and relief spending
plan of the New Deal 1934-41. Yet
this totaled only $19 billion.
Why do we need so urgently to
modernize our highways? Jacl
Cole, President, American Truck.
ing Associations, has noted, "The
phenomenal growth of our nation's
industrial and agricultural econ.
omy during the past 'few decade
Ihcis coincided with an unprecedent
-d reliance upon highway trans
port, and we're simply running ow
of roads."
Since 1940 total motor vehicle,
in the U; S. has increased 81%, oi
from some 32
million to o0er Me-W '
58 million. i
Meanwhile, Is
total street and *'~ .:
has grown but d r -
a small fraction. ,c... -
there has been 3 'y "
only a 33% ins e ee .ad .
crease in sur- .*, ,
faced road mile- ,..'
age, and annual
highway expenditures are below
the pre-war r.ie after adjusting
for today's hig-.cr costs.
We have been paying in other
ways. For instance, we're pa\.ing in
death tolls, hospitalization costs, in
higher maintenance and insurance
costs, in wasted time and fuel and
in senseless crashes. And in delay-
produced transportation costs be.
cause most of what we eat and use
comes over the highways at some
S-int on its way to us.
Former U. S. Ccrnmissior)'; of
public c Roads Thomni:. : n..l-'l
ild said, "We pay L.i: ,:.d roads
whether we have them or not-and
Wve pay less if %te have tl:em."
It's been estimated that the cost
A inadequate highways is $3 bil-
lion a year-all in wasted money.
