is buzzing this week and it isn't


because of the bees attracted
to their flowers. Cards, flowers,
stuffed animals and candy will
be flying off the shelves as St. Val-
entine is celebrated by love birds
and sweethearts.
In fact, the U.S. Greeting Card
Association estimates that ap-
proximately one billion valentine
cards are sent worldwide, making
it the second largest card-sending
holiday behind Christmas.

marriage is said to last only eight
years according to a 2005 Census.

$14 million project in
the hands of voters

In a little less than one month,
Hendry County voters will decide
whether or not to allow Hendry Re-
gional Medical Center to go ahead
with a $14 million expansion.
The project will address the
need for a new emergency room
at the facility's Clewiston hospital,
although $2 million of the project
is expected to be invested into
strengthening the center's pres-
ence in LaBelle.
It is the lone item on the March
9 ballot.
For the hospital's administra-
tion, the move seems to be one
of the few remaining options for
ensuring a viable operation in the
years to come. Leaders say they
must spend money in order to
make money. Rather than continue
funneling a part of their earnings to
the costly upkeep of an aging facil-
ity, the center must invest in its fu-
ture, maintains Lynn Beasley, Hen-
dry Regional's interim CEO.

A Walk in the Past:



Powell's failed mission

Clewiston Museum Director
Sam Jones and other Seminoles that en-
gaged Colonel Taylor's army at the Battle of
Okeechobee on December 25, 1837, fled
southeast to the Loxahatchee River (River
of Turtles) with their families to escape the
constant advancing armies of blue that now
flowed endlessly south like the waters of
Lake Okeechobee.
The fleeing Seminoles had an intimate
knowledge of South Florida and had cho-
sen the Loxahatchee River basin because
it afforded them shelter and an abundance
of food. It was in the cypress dominated
swamp, where tannic waters meet and
merged with the Loxahatchee River, that the
Seminoles found refuge.
The serpentine river was not a stranger to
man. For centuries, its nutrient laden waters
had flowed through the swampy, cypress
flood plains before emerging and joining the
Atlantic Ocean at the present day Jupiter In-
let. Nature's special recipe of enriched fresh-
water, spiced with saltwater from the Atlan-
tic Ocean, created fertile estuaries, teeming
with marine life.
Anis Indian settlements and those of
other Florida Native Americans had once in-
habited this area and flourished because of


the abundant estuaries. I recall reading the
journal of Army surgeon, Jacob Rhett Motte,
who wrote about these rich fisheries, while
stationed at Fort Jupiter during the Second
Seminole War. He reported the oysters were
innumerable; up to 10 inches across and
succulent creatures to dine upon.
He also wrote about the great fishing at
Jupiter Inlet, stating that one soldier with a
single hand line could supply one hundred
men in a short time with all the fish they
could eat
The area around Jupiter Inlet was part of
the long Atlantic Coastal Ridge, which runs
southward along Florida's east coast. It rang-
es from 10 to 50 feet above sea level, with an
average width of five miles.
This long piece of real estate protected
the early native inhabitants from flooding,
while providing them with an abundance of
deer, turkey and bear.
It would appear that the Seminoles had
sought refuge in "Paradise Lost." They had
indeed settled in a paradise, but it would
soon be lost again as the long arm of the
United States Army relentlessly searched
and probed south Florida's vast Everglades
for the elusive Seminoles.

The freeze that decimated thousands of
acres of vegetable crops throughout south-
west Florida earlier this month also had an
enormous effect on farm labor income,
costing field workers an estimated $23.6
million-plus, according to Dr. Fritz Roka, an
associate professor of agricultural econom-
ics at the University of Florida (UF)/IFAS
Southwest Florida Research and Education
Center in Immokalee (SWFREC).
"This figure includes labor income losses
for seasonal and migrant farmworkers,"
Roka explains. "These workers are em-
ployed on a day-to-day basis, and if the crop
is gone, they have no work."
The estimate of income losses was com-
piled by Roka in conjunction with Dr. Mon-
ica Ozores-Hampton, assistant professor of
vegetable horticulture at the SWFREC, and
Gene McAvoy, director and regional vegeta-
ble specialist at the UF/IFAS Hendry County
Cooperative Extension Service in LaBelle.
The report indicates that of roughly
52,600 acres of vegetable farm land in the
five-county area of Lee, Collier, Hendry,
Glades, and Charlotte counties, 16,670 have
been lost to the freeze.
Affected crops include bell peppers, cu-
cumbers, eggplant, squash, bush beans, to-
matoes, and sweet corn.
The total value of pre-harvest crop losses
to the freeze is estimated to be more than


$147 million.
The implications of the freeze to farm-
worker income are estimated on the basis
of lost opportunity to harvest and pack the
affected vegetable crops.
"What we've heard is that most of the
damaged acreage was at the beginning of
the harvest stage," Roka says. 'All of the
labor income to grow the crop had already
been paid to the workers. Plus, workers will
still be paid for any cleanup work that needs
to be done.
So, the $23.6 million-plus figure repre-
sents solely what would have been paid
to workers to harvest and pack the crops.
That's a major loss to the workers."
The loss of farmworker income will have
a dampening economic impact on local
communities in southwest Florida, such as
Immokalee and LaBelle, which house a sig-
nificant portion of the seasonal and migrant
farmworker population.
The lost income means that workers have
less to spend in local businesses.
If the impact of a damaging freeze forc-
es many farmworkers to move out of the
area to seek work elsewhere, growers who
choose to replant their crops or plan to har-
vest spring crops in March and April may run
the risk of a farmworker shortage at harvest
time.

Meet new feathered friends at the 2010 Bird Count


Join the South Florida Water Manage-
ment District (SFWMD), the Hendry-Glades
Audubon Society and thousands of avian en-
thusiasts across the nation for the 13th an-
nual Great Backyard Bird Count on Feb. 13
to Feb. 15 beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day at
the gate at STA-5 located on Blumberg Road
in Hendry County, 12 miles south of the in-
tersection of Blumberg and County Road
835. Each year, "citizen scientists" submit


checklists to help researchers at the Cornell
Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., and the
National Audubon Society study and protect
birds.
In 2009, Florida ranked first among par-
ticipating states and provinces in reporting
the most birds. Clewiston, just south of Lake
Okeechobee, was among the top 10 lo-
calities in reporting the greatest number of
individual birds. The SFWMD and Hendry-


Glades Audubon will take birders on three
separate days to an Everglades Stormwater
Treatment Area (STA) in Hendry County
that has become nationally known as a bird
watching spot. STAs are the water-cleaning
workhorses of Everglades restoration.
The South Florida Water Management Dis-
trict is steadily increasing recreational access
to public lands while continuing to manage
them to support environmental restoration,


water supply, water quality and flood con-
trol missions. At present, the District actively
manages 621,000 acres of public land. For

Bird count notes 99 species at Everglades Treatment Wetland


An Everglades restoration project main-
tained its status as a national bird watching
destination as volunteers with the Hendry-
Glades Audubon Society partnered with the
South Florida Water Management District
(SFWMD) to document 99 species and near-
ly 106,000 individual birds during the 110th
Christmas Bird Count this January. Known
as "citizen science," bird counts are vital to
studies of the long-term health and status of
bird populations.
On Jan. 2, Audubon and its 35 volunteers
made the trip to Stormwater Treatment Area
(STA) 5 just south of Lake Okeechobee in
Hendry County for a day of intensive bird
watching. Of the diverse array of bird spe-
cies sighted at the constructed wetland,
American coots were by far the most abun-
dant as they were in 2009 with more
than 60,000 counted. Birders also took note
of 45 endangered snail kites, which are na-
tive to South Florida and the Everglades, and


spotted some rarer species such as a short-
tailed hawk and a Cassin's kingbird, a spe-
cies more common in states west of Texas.
"We are honored to be part of a more
than century-old tradition that helps us fol-
low trends in bird diversity and numbers,
which ultimately aids in their protection,"
said SFWMD Executive Director Carol Ann
Wehle. "We manage treatment wetlands to
improve Everglades water quality, yet their
extensive use as havens for wildlife dem-
onstrates the significance of our restoration
work."
The District recently renovated STA-5 by
enhancing plant growth and water move-
ment through the treatment marsh to im-
prove its ability to remove phosphorus from
Everglades-bound waters.
The bird count at STA-5 once again served
as a prelude to another partnership year of
Audubon/SFWMD birding tours that show-
case wildlife and public access on lands


managed in perpetuity by the District for
Everglades restoration. The 6,000-acre con-
structed wetland, just south of Clewiston, is
today one of 489 sites on The Great Florida
Birding Trail. Sponsored by the Florida Fish
and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the
sites are selected for their prolific bird watch-
ing or bird education opportunities.
Renowned as havens for birds and wild-
life, Stormwater Treatment Areas are the
water-cleaning workhorses of Everglades
restoration, naturally using plants to remove
phosphorus from water flowing into the
fabled River of Grass.
Birding, a national pastime, is also big
business, with 48 million people observing
birds both around the home and through va-
cation travel. A 2001 report by the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service concluded that nation-
wide birding generated $32 billion in retail
sales and created 863,406 jobs.

Billy Joe 'Bo' Gray Jr., 42
CLEWISTON Billy Joe "Bo" Gray Jr., age 42,
of Clewiston, passed away Jan. 13, 2010, in
Hendry Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 20, 1967, in Clewiston the
son of Billy Joe, Sr and Beatrice (Mitchell) Gray.
He married Connie Hancock in Clewiston on
July 14, 1989; she survives. He was a former
owner/operator of his own semi and later
worked as a mechanic for Ridgdill and Sons,
Inc. He was a member of Clewiston Gospel
Ministries.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Connie; par-
ents, Billy Joe Gray Sr. and wife Katie; mother,
Beatrice Mitchell Gray; son, William "BJ" Gray;
daughter, Kristin Briana Gray; and sisters, Joy
White and Cheryl Silva.
Funeral services celebrating his life were held
8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, in the Clewiston
Gospel Ministries Church where Rev. Jim Yates
presided. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday
in the church.
Memorials are suggested to be given to the
family in lieu of flowers. Akin-Davis Funeral
Home in Clewiston was in charge of the ar-
rangements.


Gaudy Redish, 90
JONAS RIDGE, N.C. Gaudy Redish, age 90,
of Jonas Ridge, passed away Jan. 27, 2010, at
Life Care Center in Banner Elk, N.C.
She was born June 27, 1919, a daughter of the
late Gardie Matison and Ona Iowa Lance Wa-
ters. Gaudy was a member of Lakeside Baptist
Church in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Leon Carlisle Redish;
brothers, Paul Waters, Clayton Waters, Junior
Waters and Jack Waters; and a sister, Anna Rue
Converse.
Survivors include her two sons, Tommy Redish
and wife Vanessa of Jonas Ridge, N.C., Derrell
Redish of Lake Harbor, Fla.; grandchildren,
Brandi Forbes of Newland, N.C., Mindi Grissom
and husband Scott of Wilmington, N.C., Mandy
Redish of Clewiston, Fla., Kevin Redish and wife
Jessica of Conover, N.C., Jeremy Forbes of New-
land, N.C., Chase Redish of Lakeport, Fla.,
Amanda Redish of Florence, S.C.; and six great-
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 28,
in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant
Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Ingham officiating.
A local funeral service was held Sat. January
30, 2010, 2:00 pm at Akin-Davis Funeral Home in
Clewiston with Rev. Ted Hines and Rev. Bill Der-
ryberry and officiating. Interment followed in
Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston.

.-. We want to say thanks to all of our family, friends,
co-workers and people who were praying for us that we don't
even know. Our community and town have really been there
for us. We wanted to send thank you notes but we knew there
were so many people to thank and we didn't
want to miss anyone.
I, Connie Gray, would like to also give a special thank you to the friends of our son,
BJ Gray and our daughter, Kristin Gray. We hear so ofter the bad things kids do
today but I am so grateful that the young people really came as a big support for
them both and I thank you each one for that.
We have been shown more love and support than one could imagine possible. For us
the phones calls stated as soon as Bo first started feeling sick on November 17, 2009.
Our families and our church family at Clewiston Gospel Ministries called non stop to
send prayer, love and support. The longer he remained in the hospital the more calls
we recieved and the more calls that those calling us were recieving from others
concerned. I have to add I have seen times when people call just being nosey and not
out of concern at all. But not in Bo's case, everyone was concerned, sending prayers,
love, support, help if needed and it was and is still greatly appreciated. The calls,
prayers, support and love never slowed throughout his entire hospital stay. When we
decided to move him from West Palm to Clewiston he actually got to witness
for himself that all the love and concern we were telling about was true with all the
visitors that came to see him. Again greatly appreciated to everyone.
Then on January 13, 2010, God called Bo home.
Thank you again to everyone for being there for us during his illness and after his
passing.
We will always love and miss you Bo.

Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of
Florida has made a $10,000 contribution
to Doctors Without Borders USA for Haiti
earthquake relief and will match dollar for
dollar all employee contributions up to
$25,000 to this organization or the American
Red Cross.
"Everyone has been shocked and sad-
dened by the devastating earthquake in
Haiti," said Cooperative President and CEO
George H. Wedgworth. "We wanted to find
a way to help our workforce's contributions
go further so we set up a program with two
very reputable organizations that are cur-
rently providing assistance to the victims of


the earthquake."
Even before the Cooperative's Board of
Directors had a chance to take action, em-
ployees in the agricultural operations truck-
ing fleet began spearheading a campaign to
raise funds for the American Red Cross.
This effort will also be eligible for the
company's matching funds.
"In these tough economic times, it heart-
ens me to see our workforce dig deep in
their pockets go give to others in need,"
Wedgworth said. "We're proud to have
these people working in our business."

In September, 1837, an ambitious Lt.
Powell wrote Secretary of War, Joel R. Poin-
sett, a letter offering his services to lead a
military expedition into the Everglades.
He made note that on a former expedi-
tion he had penetrated 18 to 20 miles into
the Glades with large hulled cutters and that
with proper boats he could access all of the
Everglades.
Secretary Poinsett was so impressed that
he invited Powell to Washington, so that
Powell could present the plan in person.
Powell presented his plan entitled "Project
of an Expedition to the Everglades of South
Florida."
The plan entailed circumnavigating the
Everglades, discovering Seminole hideouts,
capturing women and children and attack-
ing war parties.
Powell felt that his "Search and Destroy"
missions would harass and terrify the Semi-
nole Nation into submission.
Secretary Poinsett gave Powell his bless-
ings, along with his permission to equip an
expedition into the Everglades.
Powell immediately started contracting
boat builders to construct boats, built to his
specifications- twenty flat bottom boats fitted
with sails and oars. He also began recruiting
the one hundred seamen and one hundred
soldiers that would accompany him on his
expedition.
Secretary Poinsett spoke to General Je-
sup about the expedition and let the General


know that he didn't want any Army officers
assigned to the expedition to try and outrank
the young lieutenant Powell. General Jesup
complied, but asked to have direct charge of
the expedition.
Powell's boats and men were carried to
Saint Augustine where Powell was brought
up to date on current military operations in
Florida by General Jesup.
In December, 1837, Powell and his com-
mand sailed on schooners from Saint Au-
gustine. Sailing south, they arrived at the
waters that are now part of Florida's inter-
coastal waterway, Indian River. There Pow-
ell offloaded boats, supplies and men for the
expedition into the Everglades.
The small force set up a base camp and
started training for the long trip into the un-
known Everglades. Army surgeon, Jacob
Rhett Motte, wrote about the expedition's
drill exercises.
He said, "When drawn up in line they
presented a curious blending of black and
white, like the keys of a piano forte; many
of the sailors being colored men. There was
also an odd alternation of taraulin hats and
peajackets, with forage caps and soldiers
trip roundabouts; soldiers and sailors, white
men and black, being all thrown into ranks
indiscriminately, a beautiful specimen of
mosaic."
The day after Christmas, December 26,
1837, the expedition sailed down the Indian
River. On the second day they pulled up to
shore to camp and were surprised when
some of the men caught a glimpse of Semi-
noles breaking from cover and fleeing into
the interior. Powell described the fleeing
Seminoles, saying, "Their fleetness defied


pursuit." The following night the expedi-
tion camped at the Sebastian River and then
continued south, eventually reaching the St.
Lucie River.
Lt. Powell was unaware that a major bat-
tle had been fought Christmas Day on Lake
Okeechobee called the Battle of Okeecho-
bee. Nor did he know that the Seminoles
who fought in the battle were now neigh-
bors with encampments close to the Loxa-
hatchee River. On January 11, 1838, at the
headwaters of Jupiter River, Powell's expedi-
tion discovered an Indian trail with signs that
a large band of Seminoles had passed and
were moving south.
Powell no doubt felt lucky that he had fi-
nally discovered the trail of some wily Semi-
noles.
Lt. Powell probably thought himself twice
blessed by Lady Luck when he later captured
a Seminole woman along the trail.
Lady Luck can sometimes be warm, in-
viting and a bearer of good fortune, while
at other times, she is a beguiling temptress,
who's bad luck is best left alone. Lt. Powell
had been smitten by the beguiling temptress
and now his luck was turning bad.
The Seminole woman was forced to
guide Powell and his current force of 80
men through the cypress swamp to the
Seminole's hidden encampments.
Powell ordered his men to spread out,
forming a skirmish line and then advanced
on the enemy encampments. Needless to
say, Sam Jones and a much larger force of
Seminoles were patiently waiting.
The expedition started exchanging
rounds with the Seminoles, but was soon
overwhelmed by the Seminole's superior


firepower. Men started dropping as Semi-
nole rifles found their mark. A wounded
Powell called for an orderly withdraw, but
the sailors, who were like raw recruits when
it came to land fighting, panicked and broke
rank.
Powell was pressed to maintain order as
the ramble of frightened sailors fled for their
lives.
The small expeditionary force would
have soon been overran and annihilated had
not Powell's rearguard, the Army regulars,
moved forward and maintained discipline
as the sailors retreated to the boats.
Lt. Powell gained control of his men and
made a swift, but safe retreat from the en-
raged Seminoles. In his final report to his
commander, Commodore Dallas, he record-
ed five killed and twenty two wounded. Pow-
ell also reported the loss of one of his boats
to the enemy. The boat contained powder,
rum and whiskey, a mixture of volatile spirits
that the victorious Seminoles probably made
use of when celebrating their victory.

roamed the Glades thousands of years ago
and artifacts that reflect the heritage of

Clewiston, sugar cane harvesting, and the
orange industry. Stop by and enjoy a 45-
minute group-tour for only $2.00 per person.

Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Clewiston Ministerial Association has
brought the Angelfood Ministry program to
Clewiston.
This program is open to everyone! Each
month, anyone who desires to purchase a
signature food box worth about $55- $65 for
$30 can do so.
Each box is designed to assist in feed-
ing a family of four for a week. February's
box includes top sirloin steaks, pork roast,
boneless, skinless chicken breasts, and
more. Also available are specialty boxes: a
grill box including T-Bone steaks, a stuffed
chicken box (chicken cordon bleu, etc.), a
fajita box, seafood variety box, and a fresh
fruit and vegetable box all for between
$18-$22 each.

'Bal en blane' in Clewiston


On Saturday, January 30, the volunteers
at Okeechobee Landings in Clewiston orga-
nized an event at the resort that was unique
in South Florida.
"Bal en Blanc" means a white ball in
French and the many French Canadians were
hosted to a gala evening with the pomp and
prestige of a coronation.
First of all, the male guests were required
to dress in black pants, a white shirt and
bow tie. The female guests were required to
dress in white.
The hall was decorated in white table
cloths, white balloons and the walls were all
covered in white sheets so not to take away
the ambience.
The 175 guests were ushered in to the
sounds of soft music played by a piano, bass
and saxophone trio who played music from
the 30s and 40s.
Jean-Guy Briere, Real Lussier and Jules
Dubois made the club house sound like the
Ritz-Carleton in New York.
A formal parade of dignitaries including
the owners of Okeechobee Landings, Leroy
and Sandra Hare, the Mayor of Clewiston
Mali Chamness and her escort Terry Gardner
and the local priest father Sam Thomas and
his mother, paraded into the room much
like brides and grooms at a wedding.
The 5 course meal consisting of cream of
Leek soup, spinach salad, the main course
of chicken supreme, a bread pudding in
whiskey sauce and coffee were all served
by the many volunteers.
Later during the night, Pierre Legault,the
very popular fiddler from Okeechobee Land-
ings, serenaded the party goers with down
home fiddle tunes.
After dinner, all musicians, including the


Guy and Celine Cardinal house band, offered
a mix of country line dancing, slow waltzes
and good time music.
Denise and Gaston Gagne, the organizers
of the event, thanked the many volunteers


She summed it all up by thanking the
Canadians visitors for injecting a touch of
French culture to the community of Clewis-
ton.

Responsibilities:

Overview

This position will be the main face of benefits and employment
to customers and employees. The primary duty will be to staff
the employment and benefits counter and address requests for
information and issues. Secondary duties will be to more directly
support the employment function and will include tasks such as
support for recruiting, arranging and administering standardized
competency testing and entering employment related data into
SAP. Twice per year this role will be required to support mass
hiring of seasonal workers.

Specific Duties

Work triage on a customer support window, resolving em-
ployment and benefits issues.
Arrange and proctor standardized competency tests for
employees and job candidates.
Enter employment data into SAP as required.
Work with recruiter to facilitate interviews and general re-
cruitment.

Requirements

Office and clerical skills including knowledge of computers
(Word, Excel, Internet etc.).
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication
skills.
Ability to deal face to face with customers and their issues.
Must possess excellent organizational and time manage-
ment skills.
Must be organized, methodical and accurate in work
activities.
Spanish language ability is advantageous but not essential.

Notice is hereby given that pursuant to "The Water Rights Compact Among
the Seminole Tribe of Florida, The State of Florida, and The South Florida
Water Management District", the 5th Amendment to the 22nd Annual Work
Plan of the Seminole Tribe of Florida has been submitted to the South Flori-
da Water Management District.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida, 6073 Strling Road, Hollywood, FL 33024, has
submitted, on February 3, 2010, the 5th Amendment to the 22nd Annual
Work Plan to include the following project: Brighton Reservation: Elder Ac-
tivity Center construction of a new Tribal Community Center for the Elders
on 17230 Civic Street NE. The 5.78 acre project is located on a previously
cleared sparsely vegetated 7.55 acre site in Section 13, Township 39 South,
Range 32 East. Storm water storage requirements will be met using four
onsite dry-retention areas. Big Cypress Reservation: Motocross construc-
tion of the final storm water system for the Motocross recreation area with
new water management features such as perimeter berms, retenton areas
and controlled offsite discharges. The proposed site is 58.98 acres located
in Section 8, Township 48 South, Range 33 East. Immokalee Reservation:
Roads for New Housing Immokalee Cluster One proposed improvement
plans for the construction of a roadway infrastructure to support the devel-
opment of twenty-nine single family homes in the southwest quadrant of
the Reservation. The Work Plan describes existing and proposed activities
on Seminole land. The Brighton Reservation is located in Glades County,

1.4 Each bid must be submitted in duplicate on the prescribed bid form anc

1.5 The Bid may be withdrawn prior to the date and bme of bid opening
Bids shall remain open and subject to acceptance for a period of forty-fivE
(45) calendar days after the date of bid opening, but no bidder may with
draw his Bid for a period of forty-five (45 calendar days after the ate oi
bid opening.
1.6 In order to perform public work, the successful Bidder shall have all l-
censes and permits required by Federal, State, and local statutes, regular
tions and ordinances.
1.7 Before a Contract will be awarded for the work contemplated herein
the District will conduct such investigations as are necessary to determinE
the performance record and ability of the apparent low bidder to perform
the size and type of work specified under this Invitation to Bid. Upon re
quest, the Bidder shall submit such information as deemed necessary b)
the District to evaluate the bidder's qualifications. The District reserves
the right to award the bid to the lowest responsible and qualified bidder
based on available funding.
1.8 The DISTRICT reserves the right to reject any or all bids with or with-
out cause, and/or accept bids that in it's judgment will be in the best in-
terest of the DISTRICT, and the District specifically reserves the
right to reject all bids and proceed to accomplish its objective
without awarding any contract pursuant to this invitation ThE
District also reserves the right to postpone the award of the Contract for
a period of bme which postponement, however, shall not extend beyond

The month of February has long held special
meaning for sweethearts, husbands and wives,
families, and friends. It has ofen been referred to as
the LOVE MONTH, because our minds are drawn
toward an awareness of feelings for others, and we
make special efforts to express these feelings. Many-
a verse and lyric have been dedicated to LOVE. LOVE
is the central theme of the majority of the world's
music and poetry.
It has been said that LOVE is what makes the
world go round! However you feel about the state-
ment, you must admit that LOVE is a vital part of the
world. Without LOVE in the world, life here would
be virtually impossible. Everyone LOVES someone
or something, whether they wish to admit it or not,
even if it is only themselves. Can you imagine a
world without LOVE in it? Without LOVE, crime and
lawlessness would run rampant and we would not
be safe anywhere.
However, there is LOVE in the world! It was
placed here by the Master, the Creator, the Giver
of life and all that we have. The world was formed
as a result of LOVE. Mankind was created in LOVE.
Woman was created as a companion for man be-
cause of LOVE, and they were meant to LOVE on
another. If it weren't for LOVE the world would have
ceased to exist long ago, because God would not
have withstood man's treatment of Him. The LOVE
of God is what makes the world revolve! The word of
God came to man out of LOVE. Christ came to earth,
suffered and died for our sins, because of LOVE.
Christ established His Church out of LOVE. LOVE is
the strongest force for motivation in the world. Most
of the things which we undertake in our lives are a
result of LOVE. LOVE is the driving motivation force
behind Christianity.
LOVE is not to be limited to just our own fam-
ily, friends, or neighbors. LOVE is to be extended to
all men, regardless of their status, race or national
origin. LOVE is to be extended to friends, enemies,
acquaintances, strangers and to all people regardless
of their creed. We are to LOVE the world as Christ
did. By LOVING as He did we can lead men to Him.
LOVE NEVER FAILETH!
You can easily determine if you love God by read-
ing the following scriptures John 14:15; I John 2:5;
4:7-8, 20-21; 5:2-4; I Corinthians 13.

Good and bad lovers

Hardly a week goes by and there isn't public-
ity about some famous person's infidelity. The tar-
nished images make media headlines and people
watch those celebrated fall from favor. In spite of
the warnings, poor examples or others and conse-
quences, difficulties to be faced, tragedies and suf
fearing; human beings keep on with errant behavior.
Ii. i. i, i...'What follows at times is healing; at other
times no healing takes place. Something I have rare-
ly, if ever, heard is when one person says to another
"You're a lousy lover!" Even at the worst of times,
this phrase is so "anathema" that nobody seems to
dare utter it! Yet, that's what it seems to be all about.
Well then, what is a "good lover?" The key qualities
of such a person are spelled out in a very famous
passage about love.
Saint Paul in his 13th chapter to the Corinthians
lays it all out. Love is patient, kind, not envious, not
boastful, not self seeking, not rude, not easily an-
gered, keeps no record of wrongs, rejoices in the


truth, protects, always trusts, always hopes, always
perseveres. He adds that if all of these things are
done "Love never fails (v.8)." Everything else will
fade away, and then Paul talks about "childish ways
(v.11)" and I think he is speaking to our human
imperfections, but concludes that when only faith,
hope and love remain; the greatest of them is love.
Well, I'd I"' Iu. i, ,i ._ i lover is an ideal; and
the problem with us being human beings is that
we're not perfect. What then? Love requires us to
work for that ideal; but recognizing that we're not
perfect and neither is our partner. The "wrongs" felt
or suffered; whether they be small or great, require
an understanding that I can't expect others to be
perfect and to meet all of my needs all of the time;
they're as human as I am.
But if I'm willing to do this, the possibility of
knowing the ideal love that transcends human frail-
ties and weaknesses can exist. That doesn't mean
that I have to tolerate or accept abuse or behavior
beyond what I would tolerate from some person on
the street and certainly from someone who is sup-
posed to "love" me; nor am I entitled to expect that
another will accept my childish, immature behavior
because they're supposed to do so (whoever said
so?"), but it means that I have to recognize that to
receive the joy, blessing, fulfillment, happiness that
true love brings I must continually work to make it
as perfect as I can, recognize my shortcomings, try to
grow and be mature.
Our being human makes love, true love very diffi-
cult at times; takes a lot of forgiveness, takes remind-
ers that in the midst of the most heated moments we
may be called to say "Hey, I'm on your side!" Come
to think of it, that's what God has said to us all by His
coming here and knowing us but loving us anyway.
That's love!

What have you done?

I read about a man who, when meeting new
people, never asked the conventional question,
"What do you do for a living?" Instead he would ask,
"What have you done that you believe in and are
proud of?"
The man didn't really care how they answered;
he just wanted to put the thought in their minds. He
figured people should live their lives in such a way
that they could give a good answer not for him, but
for themselves. He was delighted by a woman who
answered, "I'm doing a good job raising three chil-
dren," and by a cabinetmaker who said, "I believe in
good workmanship and practice it."
You and I would say they need a good answer
not just for themselves, but for God. "What have
you done that you believe in and are proud of?" It's
a great question. Most of us will never be happy until
we find something important that we can give our
life to.
Geologists tell us that only 3 percent of the earth's
fresh water is on the surface in the form of rivers and
lakes. The other 97 percent remains as a huge sub-
terranean reservoir down below. The potentials of
human personality are much the same. The percent-
age that is on the surface is miniscule compared to
the vast majority underneath. So, how do we bring
to the surface the powers and possibilities the Cre-
ator has placed within each of us?
For me, it comes from following Jesus in much
the same way I water skied with my brothers grow-
ing up. Picture a slim athlete water skiing behind a
very fast boat. That wasn't me. Instead, picture a
boat towing a big log with a lot of drag. I did not
pop up like my brothers. My personal weight held
me down and I was towed for awhile before I finally
got up. The secret is to hold on tight and keep with
it, and eventually the resistance will give way and


you will glide over the troubled waters and waves
of life. I'm proud that I have held on very tightly to
my connection with Christ until the resistance I have
experienced in life has given way. I'm blessed that
friends have helped by lifting me up and lessoning
some of the drag.
Another thing that I have done that I believe in
and am proud of is that I have made Jesus the boat
of my life. The skier must follow the boat. Skiing
ahead of the boat or traveling in a different direction
than the boat doesn't work very well.
It works best if Jesus is out front, pulling, rather
than behind, pushing. It is best if both you and Je-
sus are traveling in the same direction. His direction.
Also, don't forget to hold on tightly; otherwise your
forward progress will stop and you will sink!

expect to keep its assessed ad valorem tax
at 2.9 mills? Much of that money is currently
used for general operations, and to offset
the indigent care that the hospital provides
to those who cannot pay.
The hospital board is asking residents to
approve allowing them to use up to one mill
of that tax toward securing the funding that
will pay for the construction of a revamped
emergency room.
The referendum election is necessary
due to a state constitutional amendment re-
quiring voter approval on public projects ex-
pected to take longer than a year to realize.
Former CEO Craig Cudworth publicly
promised not to raise taxes with the addi-
tion of the new emergency room. Mr. Beas-
ley has not wavered from that pledge, but no
strict assurances can be made about future
years -- that depends on many factors that
may come into play, an informational pack-
et distributed by the hospital explains.
Still, there are no current plans to raise
taxes, Mr. Beasley said.
He explains that plain economics are at
the center of the board's reasoning: With
newer facilities, and a sincere push toward
attracting more physicians and services to
the area, the hospital's financial situation
can only improve.
Almost immediately after construction is
completed, the board hopes to realize a sav-
ings in the overall operation of the facility.
While he presented information about


the planned emergency room at the local
Rotary Club, Mr. Beasley said his phone rang
with a pediatrician inquiring about the area.
Administrators are hoping to attract those
doctors, as well as specialty doctors, to pro-
vide the services that county residents cur-
rently must travel elsewhere to receive. In
LaBelle, the board hopes to recruit an ear,
nose and throat doctor, and others to com-
plement the 730 patients administrators say
are treated monthly in LaBelle.
Administrators are also pushing to pro-
vide better diagnostic services in the west-
ern portion of the county, including imaging
and laboratory areas.
They hope to dispel rumors that the hos-
pital is in no position to expand; arguing that
expansion, though costly, is necessary.
"People think the hospital is dead bro-
ken," said Glenda Wilson, Hendry Regional
Medical Center Foundation executive direc-
tor. "We have been profitable. The LaBelle
center was paid for with cash and nothing is
owed on the building."
Voting 'no' on March 9, then, would be
disheartening, Mr. Beasley said.
"We think it would affect them (residents)
in a negative way for several reasons," he
said. "It would delay us being able to bring
new facilities, technology, new physicians to
the community to better meet their needs."
He said the emergency room has seen
steady growth and the facilities are simply
inadequate to care for the 1,000 patients on
average the facility treats.
"We have three exam rooms with very
limited privacy. We can do a better job," the
CEO said.
The emergency room was built in 1951,


with no major renovations since.
"That's part of our problem," Mr. Beasley
said.
"We've patched, painted and cleaned,"
added Ms. Wilson.
Clewiston resident Jeff Barwick said he
sympathizes with the contingency in La-
Belle which for many years must have felt
left out as taxpayers. Watching their money
go to the hospital in Clewiston has been a
tough proposition for them, but at least now
it seems there are efforts to address the im-
balance.
As one of the three largest employers in
the area, the hospital has a large stake coun-
ty wide as a major driver of economic stabil-
ity. Mr. Barwick is fearful of not supporting
efforts to allow the hospital to continue serv-
ing its need in the community.
"You find me a community the size of
Clewiston that loses a hospital, the effect
is devastating," said Mr. Barwick, consider-
ing the worst, before directly addressing
residents in LaBelle. "They could be saying,
'Why would I vote for this.' I would hope
most of them would see a future in this."
If successful, ground breaking is expected
to occur soon after the vote, with comple-
tion within 18 to 24 months.
The hospital's foundation will host ref-
erendum education sessions at the Clewis-
ton Museum. The sessions are open to the
public, and will be held on Feb. 16, 23 and
March 2 at 5:30 p.m.

March 6 is the date for the Coed Rally for
the Cure golf tournament at the Clewiston
Golf Course. Whether you are a golfer or
not, you can contribute to the fight against
breast cancer by participating in a number
of ways. You can make a difference as you
celebrate survivorship, honor those who
have lost their battle, and most important-
ly, raise funds and awareness for the fight
against this life threatening disease. The
Clewiston Ladies Golf Association is host-
ing this event and they invite you to join
them in making this event a success for
the City of Clewiston. Corporations, local
businesses and individual donors have the
chance to help us raise funds in a number
of ways: Pink ribbons are being sold for
$5.00 each to honor cancer survivors and
memorialize those who have lost their life
to cancer. The ribbons with names will dec-

nities for corporate sponsors, team spon-
sors and tee/hole sponsors. Donations may

tried for 63 years, first met in a downtown
Clewiston restaurant -- while each was out
on a date with someone else. They were po-
sitioned across the table from one another
and got the chance to know each other. Af-
ter that night Hager found out where Penny
lived from the other suitor and pursued her.
"He just appeared on the doorstep," said
Mrs. Lowe.
Mr. Lowe is obviously proud of his wife,
as he shows off her paintings to anyone who
visits.
"It doesn't matter if the dishes are not
done or what the house looks like," said
Mrs. Lowe.
"I'm proud of her," he replied. "I can't
help it."
She describes him as "a good husband
and great father", while he describes her as
"loving."
The couple enjoyed fishing together until
his health would no longer permit it. Now
the couple likes to spend time together in
their Clewiston vegetable garden and at their
Mississippi home where they have pecan
trees and blueberry bushes.
They both agree that marriage is some-
thing that has to be continually worked on.
"Marriage is NOT a honeymoon," said
Mrs. Lowe. "It is something you HAVE to
work on ... always."
"As you settle from youth to parenthood
to middle age and to old age, you both
grow," she said.
Dennis and Jean Edwards, married 54
years, agree, saying that one hasn't changed
the other, but rather they have grown to-
gether.
The Edwards have been seasonal Clewis-
ton residents for more than 33 years, win-


tering here each year from their home in
Hampshire, England. They like to play golf,
travel and "just be with our friends togeth-
er," said Mrs. Edwards.
"We've made friends from all over Amer-
ica from those who come here (to Clewis-
ton) in the winter months," she said.
Their agriculture backgrounds crossed
their paths when they met on the farm.
She said he's been "wonderful ever
since" and describes him as "generous and
kind and all of those things."
He describes her as a "wonderful wife.
She does everything well. We've done ev-
erything together and she's looked after ev-
erything with me."
In looking back, both couples say that
only health issues have provided them with
difficult times. For the Lowes, it was Mr.
Lowe's news of mesothelioma six months
ago, but he has since received good news
with respect to his condition.
For the Edwards, their most difficult issue
was his heart attack years ago.
Both couples agree that marriage works
when the couple works at it together.
To keep the spark the Edwards "always
have a fun time together. We always have a
wonderful time," she says.
"Honor your mate and talk things out,"
said Mr. Lowe. "If you don't listen then you
can really foul things up. You must listen to
each other and compromise and be equal in
deciding what to do."
Both couples' love has produced more
than cherished memories: Hager and Penny
Lowe have two children, six grandchildren
and one great-grandchild. Dennis and Jean
Edwards have two children and three grand-
children.
"If we had life to do over again, we would
do the same thing," said Mr. Edwards, be-
fore adding a single condition, "But maybe
get married a bit earlier."
