Since its opening in 2006, the
administrators at Clewiston Chris-
tian School (CCS) planned to ex-
pand the school by one grade level
each year until it offered a full Pre-K
through 12th grade education.
Having received office and
classroom space from U.S. Sugar
on the site of the company's for-
mer lab facilities, the school has
achieved a level of success that
has not gone unnoticed.

announced a partnership with
Clewiston Christian School that
will facilitate CCS' goal.

providing services, referrals and education
relating to the affects of domestic/sexual vio-

Teams of men and women golf for a cure


Men and women golfers are encouraged
to participate in a Rally for the Cure Golf
Tournament on March 6 at the Clewiston
Golf Course.
The tournament is hosted by the Clewis-
ton Ladies Golf Association and all proceeds
will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to
help fight breast cancer.
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and
teams of four will tee off in a shotgun starts
at 1 p.m. Activities include prizes for the
winning teams, a putting contest, and a one
swing contest at a designated par-3 Rally
hole. Each participant will have the opportu-
nity to make it on the green in one swing at
the designated par-3 Rally hole.
Those participants who hit the green and
remain, each receive an exclusive pink rib-
bon golf ball from Titleist.
As part of the rally entry fee, participants
will receive a one-year subscription to one of
four award-winning Conde Nast Titles: Golf


Digest, Self, Bon Appetit, or Architectural Di-
gest.
Hallmark has partnered with Rally for the
Cure by providing Cards for the Cure for all
Rally participants.
Cleveland Golf has also partnered with
Rally for the Cure by providing prizes for
the Rally golf events. Each participant will
receive a goody bag with favors and breast
health information.
The registration fee for each player is $65
and includes dinner at the Clewiston Coun-
try Club following the scramble.

Martin wins FLW Series event on lake

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. Team National
Guard pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla.,
caught a five-bass limit weighing 20 pounds,
3 ounces Saturday to win $50,000 in the
FLW Series Eastern Division tournament on
Lake Okeechobee with a four-day catch of
20 bass weighing 71-9.
The catch gave him the win by a 2-pound,
3-ounce margin over John Cox of Debary,
Fla., who caught a total of 20 bass weighing
69-6 and earned $20,000.
"I'm about to cry after this one," said
Martin, who has won more than $1 million
in FLW Outdoors events. "It's an amazing
feeling. I've lived here my whole life and I
fished my first FLW tournament here and
I've been fairly successful here and been in
the top 10 a few times. But to win one and
keep it here on the lake is awesome. For the
city of Okeechobee and the city of Clewiston
and all the communities around the lake ...
it's unbelievable.
"I wanted to win this tournament and I
focused," Martin added. "When you focus in
on something ... when you believe it, you
achieve it. If you doubt it, you'll do without
it. That's been my motto all week."
Martin opened the tournament in fourth
place Wednesday with five bass weighing
21-4 that he caught on junebug-colored Lake
Fork Trophy Lures "Live" Magic Shad and
watermelon red Reaction Innovations Trixie
Sharks while fishing the South Bay area. On
Thursday he added another five bass weigh-
ing 17-14 to move into second place. He
then caught five bass weighing 12-4 Friday to
make the crucial top-5 cut in second place.
Saturday Martin stuck with the baits he'd
used the first three days of competition and
sealed his win. Martin also received $6,000
for being the Ranger Cup program winner.
"You try to put yourself in position to win
tournaments and to make the right deci-
sions on the final day and have a great day
...itwas just one of those days that would be
hard to ever duplicate," Martin said.


Martin said he returned to the area he
fished all week and again had it to himself.
He said he slowed down and picked the
area apart and relied on GPS to cover differ-
ent trails through grass than he fished the
previous three days. Martin said he retrieved
the baits steadily on the surface in heavily
matted areas.
"I think the key to my success this week is
I haven't caught many of the males," Martin
said. "I saw lots of males every day. I could
have caught my limit every morning and had
10 to 12 pounds, but I left them there on pur-
pose. With the full moon coming, I wanted
those males to bring the females. So I just
marked them and kept fishing and fishing.
"I think it's a mistake to catch everything
you see, and I've done it, and it's stupid, re-
ally with a full moon," Martin said.
Cox, who led the Okeechobee event for
the first three days of competition, said con-
ditions totally changed for him on the last
day.
"I went to my area that had a lot of fish
in it and the wind was blowing into it,"
said Cox, who completed his first FLW Se-
ries event. "I thought the rocks in front of it
would protect it some, but I got in there and
it was muddy."
Cox said he fished a while in his first
area, caught one fish and relocated east of
the Kissimmee River. He managed to catch
five small keepers off beds and later culled
another keeper.

LMC introduces newest member of its medical staff


Belle Glade, Fl Lakeside Medical Center
is proud to introduce Family Medicine prac-
titioner Nikerson Geneve, DO as the new-
est physician to join the hospital's medical
staff.
Dr. Geneve, who speaks English, Span-
ish, Creole and French fluently, is accepting
new patients to his primary care practice.
Dr. Geneve's office is located in the Glades
Medical Plaza at 941 Southeast First Street in
Belle Glade.
The offices of Lakeside Medical Center's
two other new physicians, Marian Sampson,
MD and Sherida Williams, MD are also at
that location.
Together, Dr. Sampson and Dr. Williams
operate Lakeside Medical Center OB-GYN,
providing quality women's health services
to the community.
"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Geneve
to our growing medical staff here at Lake-


side Medical Center," said Brian P. Gibbons,
Jr., Hospital Administrator.
Dr. Geneve, who most recently practiced
Family Medicine in Wellington, built his
medical career in South Florida after earn-
ing his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine at
Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauder-
dale. He completed his residency training at
Wellington Regional Medical Center.
"It is a wonderful opportunity to join the
medical staff here at Palm Beach County's
newest hospital, Lakeside Medical Center,
"said Dr. Geneve. I look forward to provid-
ing the highest level of medical care in my
Family Medicine practice with an emphasis
on treating patients as individuals.
One of the advantages of working in a
small community hospital is that at every lev-
el, the professionals you work with become
an extension of your own family, said Daniel
B. Kairys, MD, staff surgeon, Lakeside Medi-


cal Center. And family is very important at
Lakeside. As a surgeon, I'm impressed with
the three operating rooms, two of which are
sized for more complex procedures.
In all there is 1,700 square feet of surgi-
cal space. My fellow physicians and I also
appreciate working with a veteran nursing
team that focuses on quality, patient-cen-
tered care.
I have been drawn to work here by the
opportunity to give back to this community
through the delivery of quality health ser-

The completion of this centrally-located
hospital and medical campus less than two
years after ground was broken is a great suc-
cess story.

and the health care community, donors,
government officials and the community at
large, said Mr. Gibbons.

We're developing expanded volunteer pro-
grams and locating specialized services on
our medical campus. The next few years at
this hospital will be very exciting.
The new hospital is designed with patient

cused on Women's Health, Emergency Care
and Outpatient Services, Lakeside Medical
Center features a Birth Place with large labor
and delivery rooms, a nursing station that
allows direct observation of newborns and
spacious and private postpartum accom-
modations. Two weeks after the hospital
opened, Lakeside Medical Center celebrated
the birth of triplets, the Glades area's first in
more than a decade.

from Belle Glade, welcomed identical twin
daughters NeKeela and NeKayla Legros, and
a baby boy, Necler Legros IV, on Thursday,
October 29. The babies, born at 34 weeks,
weighed 3 lbs, 13 oz., 4 lbs. 2 oz., and 3 lbs.,
14 oz., respectively.
The fact that Ms. Wilson went into labor
at 34 weeks is very good, said Dr. Ahmed
Barhoush, a practicing OB/GYN physician in
Belle Glade who delivered the babies. Lake-
side Medical Center is a beautiful facility and
the veteran nursing and medical staff did a
great job helping to bring these triplets into
the world.
Ms. Wilson says she found The Birth
Place at Lakeside Medical Center to be com-
fortable and family-friendly.
I've had a wonderful experience here,
she said. The staff and the hospital were so


nice. You can tell they are happy to be in this
new building.
Having such a modern facility for our
new mothers is something we've looked
forward to for a while, said Lynn Foley, RNC,
Nurse Manager of Obstetrics. Being able to
take advantage of it for a special birth like
this allowed us to truly serve our patient's
needs.
Equipped with the latest in monitoring
technology, Lakeside Medical Center's Criti-
cal Care Unit includes six private rooms, a
nursing station with full view of all CCU beds
and generous entries to accommodate pa-
tient care equipment.
Computerized throughout including
electronic patient charts and bedside bar
code scanning systems, Lakeside Medical
Center has streamlined the admissions pro-
cess to provide efficient and quality health-
care.
A new digital mammography machine,
funded in part by a generous grant from
PNC Bank, along with a Palm Beach County


Department of Housing and Community
Development Block Grant, now enables the
early detection of breast cancer so it can be
treated more effectively. Enhancements in
the telemetry unit will allow patients recov-
ering from an illness or surgery to be moni-
tored in the hospital at all times, even if they
are away from their bed.
Other state-of-the-art initiatives will bring
the patient to the doctor, such as telemedi-
cine, online x-rays and charting-some of
which are already in place. These features
will enable doctors to remotely monitor a
patient's status and communicate instruc-
tions to clinical staff from almost any loca-
tion.
Operated and built by the Health Care Dis-
trict of Palm Beach County and supported by
the Glades Healthcare Foundation, Lakeside
Medical Center has been warmly embraced
by the community it serves. From the highly-
skilled physicians to the caring staff to the
dedicated volunteers, the staff at
Lakeside Medical Center is proud to

Gaudy Redish, 90
JONAS RIDGE, N.C. Gaudy Redish, age 90,
of Jonas Ridge, passed away Jan. 27, 2010, at
Life Care Center in Banner Elk, N.C.
She was born June 27, 1919, a daughter of the
late Gardie Matison and Ona Iowa Lance Wa-
ters. Gaudy was a member of Lakeside Baptist
Church in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Leon Carlisle Redish;
brothers, Paul Waters, Clayton Waters, Junior
Waters and Jack Waters; and a sister, Anna Rue
Converse.
Survivors include her two sons, Tommy Red-
ish and wife Vanessa of Jonas Ridge, N.C., Der-
rell Redish of Lake Harbor, Fla.; grandchildren,
Brandi Forbes of Newland, N.C., Mindi Grissom
and husband Scott of Wilmington, N.C., Mandy
Redish of Clewiston, Fla., Kevin Redish and wife
Jessica of Conover, N.C., Jeremy Forbes of New-
land, N.C., Chase Redish of Lakeport, Fla.,
Amanda Redish of Florence, S.C.; and six great-
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 28,
in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant
Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Ingham officiating.
A local funeral service was held Sat. January 30,
2010,at Akin-Davis Funeral Home in Clewiston
with Rev. Bill Derryberry officiating. Interment
followed in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston.

Rufus Irvin Tull, 73
CLEWISTON Rufus Irvin Tull, age 73, of
Clewiston, passed away Jan. 27, 2010, in Cle-
wiston.
He was born June 17, 1936, in Poplar Bluffs,
Mo., the son of the late Charlie and the late Effie
Mae (Woods) Tull. Mr. Tull married Wanda
Mills April 1981; she survives.
He was a Lock Master for the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers retiring in June 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda (Mills) Tull;
one son, Edison Tull of Clewiston; two sisters,
Olive White, and Barbara Watson; step-chil-
dren, Eugene Fullard, Kenneth Fullard, Ricky
Fullard, and Roxanne Lawson; eight grandchil-
dren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday
Jan. 31, 2010, in Akin-Davis Funeral Home,
where visitation was held on Saturday from 6 to
8 p.m., with Rev Troy Ezell officiating. Interment
was in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston.

Marguerite Cress Wolfe, 91
DECATUR, Ga. Marguerite Cress Wolfe,
surrounded by her children, passed away in
Coventry Place Tuesday, January 26, 2010, after
a short illness. She
was 91.
She was born and
reared in Cleveland,
Tenn., the daughter
of William Ira Cress
and Bessie Burns
Cress.
Upon marrying,
she and Jay resided
in Cleveland, Miss.,
until World War II.
With the war effort, ...:. .
they moved
to several different states, where
she met the challenge of turning 15 more hous-
es into homes for her family. She was an enthu-
siastic homemaker with an obsession for taking
care of people and was the hub that united her
grandchildren summer after summer. When
her nest was empty, she shared her caretaking
as a Pink Lady. Her main club interest was the
Eastern Star.
Marguerite first worked in retail, and then she
and Jay worked side by side in their family busi-
ness of building and operating cable television
systems in the Mississippi Delta. They retired in
1969 and, thereafter, wintered on Lake Okee-
chobee, prior to making Clewiston their perma-
nent residence in 1985.
Marguerite was preceded in death by Joseph
(Jay) Edward Wolfe, her husband of 68 years,
and five siblings. After being widowed in 2006,
Marguerite enjoyed living an active life in the re-
tirement home of her trusted nephew, Mike
Cress, with one of her daughters near by.
Mrs. Wolfe is survived by one sister, Anne
Cress Cavini; her daughters, Juanita Wolfe
Dunn of Bastrop, La., Beverly M. Wolfe of Deca-
tur, Ga. and Jo Ann Wolfe Smith of Decatur,
Ga.; grandchildren, Gigi Dunn, Jerry Crawford,
Jay Crawford, Anne Claire Dunn Stephenson,
Walt Peden, Megan Dunn Meador and Mary Jo
Ann Peden Grisham; 12 great-grandchildren;
and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday,
February 6, 2010, at Coventry Place.
A.S. Turner & Sons of Decatur, Ga., handled
the arrangements for cremation.

Preparing for the Afterlife

Colonel Taylor's army spent December
26, 1837, burying the dead and preparing the
wounded for the trip to Fort Bassinger. The
Seminoles, after extracting these heavy cau-
salities on the Americans, were driven from
the Battle of Okeechobee into the fastness
of the Everglades, where they, too, mourned
their dead.
Historians are uncertain about the loss-
es the Seminoles sustained in the Battle of
Okeechobee because the Seminoles, like
the Marines of today, always tried in every
possible way to remove their wounded and
fallen comrades from the field of battle and
bring them home.
The Seminole's motive for removing fall-
en comrades from the battlefield went be-
yond the human bond of loyalty that devel-
ops between men, who face death together
in battle. Loyalty did play an important role,
but it was the Seminole's religious beliefs
and customs that placed strong emphasis
on removing the bodies from the field of
battle.
Seminole religious beliefs and customs
placed great importance on removing the
slain from battle, so the body couldn't be
mutilated or desecrated by the enemy. Such
an act would alter the slain person's spiritual
body in the afterlife. The custom of recover-
ing the slain from the hands of the enemy
was practiced by most Native Americans.
The ceremonial burial rites were very
important and used to ensure the deceased
person a happy life in the next world. It is
unfortunate, but most information on the
rituals is hidden from outsiders and remains
a mystery even today.
I have read numerous 18th century eye-
witness accounts of persons who saw and
recorded various stages of the Seminole
burial ceremonies. These written accounts
indicate the living mourned the deceased for
several days, while women left their hair in
disarray during the bereavement period.
The mourning period was probably lim-
ited to several days prior to the funeral ritu-
als because Florida's warm climate sped up
decay in the deceased person. I recall stories
told to me as a young boy (by older Florida
relatives) about the expediency of burying
the dead who weren't embalmed.
The body was washed and prepared by
family or friends for viewing and kept over-
night at a relatives home until the funeral
services were held the next day. However,
nature dictated that individuals stay up with
the dead person during the night because
discharged fluids that emitted from the de-
composing body had to be removed. This
overnight "Virgil" was called a "Wake" in
the South.
After the Seminole mourning period
ended, the dead warrior was placed above
the ground at a remote location, along with
some of his personal possessions. One ac-
count stated that the deceased person's per-
sonal possessions used in the funeral were
broken, hence freeing the dead man's spirit
from his earthly possessions.
The body was then left to Mother Na-
ture's care, until only the whitened bones
of the deceased remained. The bones and
personal possessions were later gathered
and buried.


Many Native Americans practiced similar
rites when preparing a body for the afterlife.
Spanish captives and priests in the 15th and
16th centuries wrote about the early Florida
Indians placing their dead in houses called
"Charnel Houses." Guards were posted
around the house, until the flesh decayed
from the person's bones. The bones were
prepared and wrapped in tanned skins, then
placed on a raised platform, which served
as a cemetery.
Archeologist in Florida located one such
burial site at Fort Center, a state wildlife
management area located close to Lake-
port, Florida. The site is open to the public
and free. There is signage explaining the Na-
tive American culture and the artifacts found
at the site.
After the Battle of Okeechobee, many of
the Seminoles made their way southeast, to-
ward the Loxahatchee River. While moving
eastward across the Glades, they may have
used the high ancient mounds of the Mayai-
mis Indians as a place to camp and mourn
their dead. Regardless of where the Semi-
noles established their camps, they would
have been forced to put their dead to rest.
An ole Gladesman told me an interest-
ing story about this area several years ago.
He and his brothers were Florida Crackers
that were very much at home in the woods.
Their well honed hunting skills put plenty of
ill gotten venison on the table because they
were renowned poachers who frequented
the large private lands that lay to the east of
Lake Okeechobee.
One day, he and a brother were illegally
poaching deer and had stopped to rest on a
high ridge, deep within an oak hammock.
His brother noted a small object protruding
from the sandy soil, which seemed out of
place. He started digging and soon a long,
rusted gun barrel with a flintlock hammer
was unearthed from a forgotten time.
Who would bury a flintlock gun in the
middle of a swamp? Flintlock guns were
used during the Seminole Indian Wars,
but saw little usage by the time white set-
tlers started moving into the Glades. Cultur-
ally, soldiers that fought during the Seminole
Wars and the later Glades Settlers would
never have parted with a gun, to appease
a fallen comrade or friend traveling into the
afterlife.
The flintlock gun more than likely be-
longed to a deceased male Seminole. Did
this gun once spew hot lead at soldiers in
blue or feel the cold, death grip of its master's
hands, as he too died in Battle of Okeecho-
bee? We will never know the answer, but it
is stories like this that makes South Florida
History so fascinating.
A re-enactment of the Battle of Okeecho-
bee will be presented Saturday, Feb 6th at
2:00 p.m. and Sunday, Feb.7th, at 1:00 p.m.
at the Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State
Park, which is located at 3500 S.E. 38th Ave-
nue, Okeechobee, Florida. The GPS location
is: 27.211601-80.789530.
Please take the time to see this historical
event. The actors dress in authentic looking
uniforms, while Seminoles wear in tradi-
tional cloths of that time. There will be horse
rides, 1800's Medicine show, Living History,
Blacksmith, Cracker Cow Camp, Cannon
Demonstration, music, food and lots of fun.
Admission is five dollars per car.

A call to prayer!

First Christian Church
The greatest threat to spiritual awak-
ening in America is Christian withdrawal!
Though 2 Chronicles 7:14 promises "heal-
ing to the land," many of God's people wag
their heads in unbelief, questioning whether
the land can be healed, or even should be.
Twenty-first Century prophets of gloom pre-
dict that America is beyond hope, beyond
faith, beyond mercy.
The negativism has caused many to turn
their backs to the spiritual, social and moral
issues facing our nation... to walk away from
involvement with a "what can I do about it",
attitude.
"After all, isn't this the way it will be in the
last days? Isn't this just a sign of the times?
Let's eat, drink, and be merry... the Lord is
coming soon!" And so the silent Christian
majority folds its hands to wait, watching
Satan win one victory after another and not
even lifting a prayer!
Passive indifference, prayerlessness and
resignation to the conditions around us


have allowed the enemy to move freely and
without opposition through the media, the
university, the legislature.
This was not Christ's plan for us. In Mat-
thew 5:13 He defines our role to be that of
"salt in the earth." Meat packed in salt is
preserved and the normal process of decay
restrained.
In the same way Christians filled with the
Holy Spirit and the dynamic of prayer have
the power to be that kind of restrainer, hold-
ing back corruption, and in turn holding
back the judgment of God.
Sodom and Gomorrah had no such re-
strainers (Genesis 18:22-33). It was not the
abundance of sinners that brought final de-
struction. It was the absence of saints.
Often the cry is heard in America, "Love it
or leave it!" Tragically, we as Christians have
left it if we have failed it in prayer. We have
become salt that has lost it' savor... its influ-
ence... its restraining power.
What hope is there for an America whose
saints have given up and packed their bags
for Heaven? May it never be, "Lord, give us
mercy, healing, rebirth in 2010!"

Limited Ad Valorem Tax Revenue Bonds
The Governing Body (the "Governing Body") of Hendry County Hospital Authority (the "Authority") has deter-
mined that it intends to issue Limited Ad Valorem Tax Revenue Bonds (the "Bonds") of the Authority to pay the
costs of capital expenditures of the Authority authorized by law. As provided by Resolution No. 009-2009, duly
adopted by the Governing Body on October 26, 2009, a bond election shall be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010,
for the purpose of submitting to the qualified electors of the Authority, for their approval or disapproval, the
issuance of the Bonds.
If approved, the Bonds shall be issued in one or more series, at one time or from time to time, in the aggregate
principal amount of not to exceed $14,000,000. The Bonds shall be payable from ad valorem taxes levied and
collected by the Authority on all taxable property in the geographic jurisdiction of the Authority at a rate not to
exceed 1 mill. Existing tax rates are not being proposed to be increased as a result of the vote. (i.e. no increase
in current taxes).
The Bonds shall not be issued unless the Bonds shall be approved at the bond election by a majority of the qual
ified electors of the Authority voting in such election, all in the manner provided in the Constitution and laws of
the State of Florida.
The polling places and times shall be the same as in general elections held in Hendry County,

trip to Guatemala. The three anglers were fishing off the Pacific Coast with
Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures. They were joined by John's wife, Patsy.

Hendry County Fair 2010 Dedication to the Paige Family


In 1957, a young Bobby Paige traded
some Lake Port Land for a section and a
half of unimproved land on the east side of
the L-1 Dike. He moved into a small camp
house and started building fences. A wood
frame house slowly followed.
Approximately one year later, his wife
Marjorie and son, Steve (only 4 years old
at the time), joined him. For the next 14
months they lived without electricity, phones
or trees!
Bobby and Marjorie married in 1952 and
began their lives together in Okeechobee
County. Both were born and raised around
the lake, and for the first five years of their
married lives, they owned and operated the
Lake Port Grocery.
With a seed herd of 100 head of Angus X
Cattle, Bobby and Marjorie eventually built
their herd to over 400 head of grown cows
in this cow-calf beef operation.
Bobby and Marjorie remained active in
civic and community affairs. In the early
1960's, Bobby assisted in organizing the
Bolles Drainage District and served as a di-
rector on its board for many years.
In 1974, Steve purchased a half section of
land bordering his parents' land where he


began a crossbred cattle operation. Over the years the family grew. Steve married in 1978.

He and his wife, Kathy, have two children;
Matt and Cassi. Their children were raised
helping on the ranch.
The late 1980's brought a major change
to the Paige family. Steve and Kathy began
converting their cattle land into sugar cane
land. Eventually, they sold all of their cattle
and were exclusively planted in cane. Bob-
by and Marjorie continued with their cattle
operation. Together, Bobby, Steve and Matt
ran both operations.
Upon graduation from the University of
Florida in December 2005, with a degree
in Ag Economics, Matt rejoined the fam-
ily operation. He and his wife, Lindsey, an
elementary teacher, married in 2008. They
have one daughter, Annabeth, and are ex-
pecting a second little Paige in July.
Daughter, Cassi, graduated from the In-
ternational Academy of Design and Technol-
ogy in July 2008 with a degree in Interior De-
sign. She resides in Tampa and is employed
as an assistant designer at Robb and Stucky
Corporation.
Sadly, Bobby passed away in February
2006. Thanks, though, to his tutelage and
example, the Paige legacy will remain strong
for many years.

South Florida Water Management District
Notice of Agency Action
The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD or District) give
notice of its Agency Action for Water Use Permit 50-00173-W.
The continuation of an existing use of surface water from the SFWMD Ca-
nal (L-12) for agricultural irrigaton use serving 9060 acres with an annua
allocation of 6131.52 million gallons (a maximum monthly allocation oi
904.6484 million gallons) pursuant to application 090211-12, for a project
known as Boy Farm for the purpose of agricultural irrigation of 9060 acre
of sugar cane using a flood/seepage irrigation system. The permit is sub-
ject to 18 Limitng Conditions. The Project is located in Palm Beach County
in Sections 25, 36 Township 42 South Range 38 East; Sections 6-8, 16-20
29-32 Township 42 South, Range 39 East; Section 1 Township 43 South
Range 38 East; and Sections 5-7 Township 43 South, Range 39 East located
between the SFWMD Canal L-8 and State Highway 700. The use is rea-
sonable-beneficial, will not interfere with any presently existing legal use oi
water and is consistent with the public interest. The permit was issued Sep
member 21, 2009 to US Sugar Corporation, 111 Ponce De Leon Ave, Clewis-
ton FL 33440.
The above Permit and Staff Report, including limiting conditions to pro
vide reasonable assurances that the projects meet SFWMD statutes anc

The District's agency action as set forth in the Staff Reports shall become
final unless a timely petition for an administrative hearing is filed under Sec-
bons 120.569 and 120.57 of the Florida Statutes before the deadline for fil-
ing a petition. The procedures for petitoning for a hearing are set forth
below, followed by the procedures for pursuing mediation.
A person whose substantial interests are affected by the District=s per
emitting decision may petition for an administrative proceeding (hearing) un
der Sections 120.569 and 120.57 of the Florida Statutes. The petition music
contain the information set forth below and must be filed (received) in the
Office of the Clerk at the SFWMD Headquarters at 3301 Gun Club Road
West Palm Beach, FL 33406. Pursuant to Rule 28-106.104 Fla. Admin. Code
any documents received after 5:00 p.m. shall be filed as of 8:00 a.m. on the
next regular business day. Filings by e-mail will not be accepted. A copy o
the Petition must also be mailed at the time of filing to the persons name
above at the address indicated. Failure to file a petition within the 21 days
of publication of notice, or other receipt of the written notice, whichever
first occurs first, constitutes a waiver of any right such person has to an ad
ministrative determination (hearing) pursuant to Sections 120.569 anc
120.57, Fla. Stat. as provided by Subsection 28-106.11(4) Fla. Admin. Code
The petitioner shall mail a copy of the petition to the applicant at the ad
dress indicated above at the time of filing.
A petition that disputes the material facts on which the District's action is
based must contain the information set forth in Rule 28-106.201(2), Fla. Ad

(1) Identificaton of the action being contested, including the permit
number, application number, District file number or any other SFWME
identification number, if known.
(2) The name, address and telephone number of the pebtioner and pet
tioner's representative, if any.
(3)An explanation of how the petitoner's substantial interests will be af
ected by the agency determination.
(4)A statement of when and how the petitioner received notice of the
SFWMD's decision.
(5)A statement of all disputed issues of material fact. If there are none
the petition must so indicate.
(6)A concise statement of the ultimate facts alleged, including the specific
facts the petitoner contends warrant reversal or modification of the
SFWMD's proposed action.
(7) A statement of the specific rules or statutes the petitioner contends
require reversal or modification of the SFWMD's proposed acton.
(8) If disputed issues of material fact exist, the statement must also in-
clude an explanation of how the alleged facts relate to the specific rules
or statutes.
(9) A statement of the relief sought by the petitioner, stating precisely the
action the petitioner wishes the SFWMD to take with respect to the
SFWMD's proposed action.
A petition that does not dispute the material facts on which the District's
acton is based shall state that no such facts are in dispute and otherwise
shall contain the same information as set forth above, as required by Rule
28-106.301, Fla. Admin. Code. Because the administrative hearing process
is designed to formulate final agency action, the filing of a petition means
that the District's final action may be different from the position taken by ii
in this notice.

Communication is Key

First United Methodist Church
A lady went to a marriage counselor. She
stated, "I want to divorce my husband."
"Do you have any grounds for divorce?"
the counselor asked.
"Why, yes. We have almost an acre."
"You don't understand," said the coun-
selor. "What I want to know is if you and
your husband have a grudge."
"That we don't have," she said. "But we
do have a carport."
The counselor shook his head and said,
"I'm sorry, but I still don't see any reason
why you should divorce your husband."
"It's just that the man can't carry on an
intelligent conversation," she replied.
We laugh, but problems with communi-
cation are a part of life. Communication is a
tricky thing. Is what we think we are saying
really being understood by those we are try-
ing to communicate with? We can't assume
what we say will always be understood,
even if it seems obvious to us.
In the newspaper column, "Ask Heloise",
she once gave a household hint in which she
shared that one should put a cup of liquid in
the cavity of a turkey when roasting it. Be-
lieve it or not, someone wrote her that "the
turkey tasted great, but the plastic cup melt-
ed." Now she is very careful to say: "POUR a
cup of liquid in the cavity of a turkey."
Communication is key, and can make
all the difference. Vice Admiral James B.
Stockdale survived 2,714 days as a POW in
Vietnam. On one occasion, the North Viet-
namese handcuffed Stockdale's hands be-
hind his back, locked his legs in heavy irons,
and dragged him from his prison cell to sit in
an un-shaded courtyard so other prisoners
could see what happened to anybody who
refused to cooperate.
According to the Navy's official report,
Stockdale remained in that position for three
days. The guards would not let him sleep,
and Stockdale was beaten repeatedly. After
one beating, Stockdale heard the sound of
a towel snapping. He noticed that the noise
was not random.
History has shown that POWs and hos-
tages have been sustained by ingeniously
improvised lifelines of communication. In
Vietnam, a clever tap code, in which the
number of sequence of taps spelled out
letters of the alphabet, became the prison-

James Stockdale heard sitting out in that
prison courtyard that day was a towel snap-
ping out in prison code the letters GBUJS. It
was a message he would never forget: "God
Bless You Jim Stockdale." He will tell you
that it was that simple act of communication
that kept him going.
Communication is key, and can make
all the difference. In a similar simple act of
communication to help us keep going in the
midst of what's happening to us, Christ is
tapping out an encouraging message. He's
saying "God bless you! You can make it!" To
those who have ears to hear, let this truth be
communicated!

Getting closer to Heaven: Is it
learning from others?

One of the great stories I heard was about
a man from Hawaii. He told how the people
there were proud of their pineapples and
how important pineapples were to them.
When he went to school, he said that they
always talked about pineapples. Math was
"Two plus two pineapples equal how many
pineapples?"
Geography was "The world is round but
not perfectly round; something more like
a pineapple." Ecology was about using the
leftovers to make energy; pineapple-power.
Nutrition was about the nourishment offered
in fruits and vegetables like the pineapple,
for instance.
Then he said "One day I made a trip to
the mainland and found out that the rest
of the world didn't run on pineapples!" It's
easy to get to thinking our way is the only
way. One of my colleagues just spent a year
ministering in Italy.
She has talked about it ever since: the
music, the customs and traditions that are
celebrated, the wonderful food, the ways
people greeted each other on the street. She
was impressed with a way of life that was dif-
ferent from the one she knew in New York;
perhaps with something to offer to others.
As I reflected on it, I thought "And they do it
all without pineapples!"
We do better at times. We know that the
world doesn't run on sugar; (although there
may be a day when it will be the basis of a

practical fuel.) We know that have our ways
of doing things here at home, thank you, but
also must recognize that others have their
ways and they are as well-served, too.
Years ago, our Church purchased an old
church of another denomination. It was
a beautiful building, full of icons and with
very few places to sit. I became very curi-
ous about how people used to worship in
this building. The altar was square and joints
were sealed with wax.
I learned that the people believed that
icons were two-dimensional while statues
were three-dimensional; the command-
ment said "No graven images" and perhaps
statues were less respectful. I learned that
the altar was taken from measurements in
the Old Testament.
I had stumbled upon a way people had
worshipped that served them well and was
very well thought-out. Most of all, I found
that they had something to say and some-
thing to offer by their traditions and practic-
es. I was sorry in a way that they had ceased
to be a part of the "religious landscape" in
that community; something certainly was
lost.
When the Lord said "I have other sheep
that are not of this sheep pen; I must bring
them also. They too will listen to my voice
and there shall be one flock and one shep-
herd (John 10:16)."
When that day comes, we will listen seri-
ously to what others have to offer; overcome
the pride of thinking we are the best and
only ones who are "right", learn from one
another, and be a little closer to Heaven!

would have to be unloaded, separated and
gathered to fill the specific orders of retailers
around South Florida.
This is how the first tier of jobs would be
created through an inland port. Other tiers of
jobs could be created through what is called
the ripple effect.
More workers in an inland port area will
need housing, groceries and local goods
and services that would create more need of
other jobs and businesses.
"The inland port is to assist the ports of
South Florida to distribute goods in Florida,
South Florida and eventually the Southeast
United States," said Richard Woodruff, prin-
cipal planner for Hilliard Brothers Develop-
ers.
Hilliard Brothers is working on one of the
proposed Hendry County sites at Airglades
Airport. "We will be able to offer a service

The Clewiston Library is pleased to an-
nounce that it will be starting another new
program of regular storytimes for children.
The program, entitled Sunset Storytime, will

the growing business of an inland port and
that's just on the first tier.
The U.S. Sugar property next to the Air-
glades Airport is one of the proposed Hen-
dry County sites. It is 6,000 acres with 324
wetland acres that the site's developers plan
to preserve.
One of the selling points of the site is its
close proximity to the airport, which would
allow for a possible hub for air transport of
goods with the extension of the 5,906 foot
runway to 8,000 feet. Its location next to ma-
jor highways and the soon-to-be-completed
four-laning of State Road 80 also make this
site appealing.
Recently the Hilliard Brothers develop-
ment was named third as a possible inland
port site by the Port of Palm Beach. That
port named the Florida Crystal develop-
ment in Belle Glade as the inland port. Sec-
ond was Treasure Coast in St. Lucie County
and fourth on their list was another Hendry
County site, the Weekly Brothers develop-
ment off U.S. 27.

Hendry County Fair
Saddle up with the Hendry County Fair is
this year's theme, the 2010 Hendry County
Fair starts Friday, Feb. 5 through Saturday,


"Port of Palm Beach chose the site based
on who offered the best deal from the devel-
oper standpoint," McCarthy said. "The Port
of Miami is not doing a site selection pro-
cess, but is focusing on their tunnel. They
are supporting the thought of an inland port,
though."
McCarthy said Port of Miami will be out
of space before the other ports and will be
most likely to send transport units to an in-
land port.
Port of Miami already has the permits
by the Corps of Engineers and the funding
to deepen its port channel to 50 feet from
its current 36 feet, which will be necessary
for the larger transport ships to come in
through.
"Rail will be critical (as necessary infra-
structure) for the inland port," said McCa-
rthy, as rail hub shipping will be transport
methods to get units to an inland port.
That is why McCarthy feels the state will
have to get involved in the choice of the lo-
cation of an inland port. But the state has
not made comment or commitment on the
need of an inland port in South Florida.
As far as a Hendry County site not be-
ing named the inland port site by the Port
of Palm Beach, McCarthy said that will not
deter the county.
"We will continue to market our indus-
trial park," said McCarthy. "We are going to
add road and infrastructure independent of
Port of Palm Beach."
Woodruff also said that Hilliard Brothers
will move forward.
"Hilliard Brothers intends to proceed with
their facility as they believe it is the best lo-
cations that will offer the best services. The
location that can offer that will be the inland


Although not quite the same, CCS has
relied on U.S. Sugar offering its land to the
school, and has made creative use of the fa-
cilities for instruction. A tour of the school
reveals a well thought-out configuration of
classrooms and lesson plans, but more and
more, the school finds itself in a position to
continue growing.
With 133 students, there are currently no
plans to construct additional buildings at the
compound, but Ms. Miller said that expan-
sion plans may figure more heavily in com-
ing years.
As it stands, there is no discussion about
King's Academy assuming all of the grade
levels at some point in the future -- although
Mr. Loveland would not flatly reject the idea,
he offered that such a proposal had not been
formally hashed out.
"That is always a possibility, but I have

Pete Quasius, an environmental policy
advocate for Collier County Audobon said
the Belle Glade site is questionable for many
reasons, including its contradiction to Ever-
glades Restoration on the proposed devel-
opment site.
"I think the consensus is that it's an inap-
propriate site," he said.
Quasius said other sites, and in particular
sites in Hendry County, might work better.
"Airglades makes an awful lot of eco-
nomic sense and little environmental im-
pact," he said.
Many questions do loom about the pos-
sibility of an inland port in Hendry County
or any other South Florida location. Among
them: Will environmental lawsuits stop de-
velopment of an inland port? What locations
can offer the best development or the best
infrastructure? Will an inland port in South
Florida be utilized by those shipping goods
to America? Will national export/import pol-
icies change thoughts about a South Florida
inland port? Will state and federal agencies
step in to assist in placing infrastructure?
McCarthy offers that one of the largest
misunderstandings about an inland port is
whether there will even be an inland site
or not and also that the Port of Palm Beach
has a say about where an inland port should
go.
"It's primarily a private venture that will
see state and government involvement
through infrastructure," said Quasius. "We
are talking about a long process ... and the
potential is huge."

hired remains a variable, and depends large-
