Suddenly the ground began
to move beneath his feet. Then,
large swaths of earth became like
waves at sea.
Emmanuel and his wife fell
to the ground, and they dropped
without knowing what was hap-
pening. They got up immediately,
and as soon as they did, they were
tossed back to the floor, to where
glass bottles were kept and they
suffered cuts to their arms and to
their legs.
They determined to stay on
the ground, as they watched
the very framework of buildings
sway like trees in a breeze. They
remained there, holding each
other's hands and praying -- so
loudly that, much later, the mem-
ories of their family members of
the quake could be traced to the
prayer recited during the peak of
the rupturing swell.
On Thursday night in Clewis-
ton, in a small church in Harlem,
members and others gathered
to pray for the Menningers. "You
will not die! You will not die!" one
woman yelled. The mournful
congregation held hands around
the pews in the church, forming
a large circle of prayer for their
pastor.
Across the sea, in Santo, Haiti,
Emmanuel rested on a mattress
in the front yard, where if an af-
tershock struck, nearby buildings
which had collapsed, or were in
danger of collapsing, could not
hurt the sleeping residents.
Sometimes, the night was
pierced with silence without
running water and electricity,
he remembered. Then, planes
arriving or leaving the nearby
airfield stirred the sleeping. On
most nights, when many others
clutched on to an hour or to two
hours of sleep in the cold of the
forming dew, there would begin
a weeping of people reliving the
moment.
And the Menningers would
pray until the crying ended.

Cliche has turned into reality for
a South Florida woman still reeling
from the deaths of her parents and
grandmother.
This is because nothing will
bring her family back, and she
struggles in finding closure to the
horrific homicide case that rocked
the community of Clewiston in
2006.
With one suspect dead, and
another going past her third year
of being incarcerated in a Hendry
County jail, the victim hopes for
justice, but finds that justice moves
slow.
"It's terrible," said Joy Cardenas,
the Naples daughter of Joey Glenn
Whitaker and Carolyn Cox Whi-
taker. "Just when we think we're
getting back to our normal lives,
we still have this big, black cloud
hanging over us."
The source of that frustration is
the long-delayed court process that
has seen, in Ms. Cardenas' eyes,
one after another after another set-
back.
"Is she gonna stay in prison? Is
she gonna get out?" she wonders.

A walk in the past: For Taylor, a bitter sweet victory

On December 25, 1837, General Zachary
Taylor's Army fought the Seminoles in the
bloodiest battle of the Second Seminole In-
dian War.
This battle was called the Battle of
Okeechobee and was fought near the pres-
ent day City of Okeechobee.
The U.S. Army causalities in this engage-
ment were 26 dead and 112 wounded,
while the Seminole causalities are really un-
known.
The Seminole leaders, who participated
in the battle, were great tacticians that care-
fully prepared a defensive position close to
the shores of Lake Okeechobee.
Their strategic planning resulted in a
technical win because they inflicted more
damage on the American forces.
However, from a logistical perspective,
the Seminoles were driven from the field of
battle, making the U.S. Army the victor.
The Battle of Okeechobee was celebrat-
ed by the nation as a victory, while Taylor
at best celebrated the battle as a hollow vic-
tory.
He lamented the loss of his men and after
the battle said, "I may be permitted to say,
that I experienced one of the most trying
scenes of my life, and he who could have
looked on it with indifference, his nerves
must have been very differently organized
from my own.
"Besides the killed, among whom were
some of my personal friends, there lay one-
hundred and twelve wounded officers and
soldiers, who had accompanied me 145
miles, most of the way through unexplored
wilderness."
Victory for Taylor was indeed bitter
sweet.
The American public ushered Taylor into
the Nation's limelight as a hero, while the
U.S. Army later bequeathed the honor of
Brigadier General on him.
The Okeechobee victory was the begin-
ning of a triumphal road that would one day
lead Taylor to the office of President.
However, the road wasn't without bumps
because Taylor was soon engaged, defend-
ing his actions at the Battle of Okeechobee.
Colonel Taylor never had a love for vol-
unteers during the Second Seminole Indian
War.
His sentiments were shared by many
Army officers, who viewed volunteers as un-
trained and unreliable when the going got
rough.
However, the demands for soldiers dur-
ing the Second Seminole War far outstripped
the supply of available Army Regulars, so
commanders in the Florida Theater were
forced to command and tolerate volunteers,
who in their opinion failed to meet military
standards.
Shortly after the battle on January 4,
1838, Taylor expressed his disgruntled feel-
ings about the "volunteer soldiers" when he
wrote his report on the Battle of Okeecho-
bee.
In the report he stated that the Missouri-
ans had broken and retired.
The Secretary of War, Joel Roberts Poin-
sett, was asked to submit a report on the
battle to the United States Congress, so he
recorded Taylor's lack of praise for the Mis-
sourians in his report, which was submitted,
February 14, 1838.
The State of Missouri didn't take kindly to
Taylor's words.
An angry Missouri State Legislature re-
sponded to Taylor's accusations by passing
a resolution.
The resolution requested a court of in-
quiry.
Numerous officers and enlisted men,
who had fought in the Battle of Okeechobee,
were asked to give their sworn statements.
Several valid points were made during
the investigation.
One point made was Colonel Gentry's
statement to Colonel Taylor that a frontal as-
sault was unwise and a flanking maneuver
more prudent.
Today, historians agree that the Battle of
Okeechobee could have been a decisive vic-
tory for Taylor had he outflanked the Semi-
noles and cut off their escape routes.
The Seminoles would have suffered a
major defeat and the war brought to an ear-
lier end.
Another point made in the inquiry was
why did Colonel Taylor put volunteers on
the front line?
The Missouri volunteers were inexperi-
enced and untested in battle, so why would
Taylor use them as front-line soldiers?
Many of the Missourians that fought in
the battle accused Taylor of protecting his
Army regulars at the volunteer's expense.
On February 20, 1838, the United States
Senate met and Secretary of War, Poinsett
said, "No blame can rightly be attached to
Taylor for placing the volunteers in the front
ranks."
Taylor was found not guilty, but you can
bet Taylor got few votes in Missouri years lat-
er, when he campaigned to be the President
of the United States.
Colonel Taylor was promoted to General
and later took General Jesup's position as
commander of the U.S. Army forces in the
Florida Theater.
Taylor would distinguished himself in the
Mexican American War and become Presi-
dent of the United States in 1848.
United States History remembers Taylor
for his term as President, while Glades Histo-
ry will always remember him as the Colonel,
who fought the Seminoles in the "Battle of
Okeechobee" and placed a Legendary Lake
called "Lake Okeechobee" on the Florida
map.
Today, a small, meandering creek that
flows slowly into Lake Okeechobee is
named in Taylor's honor.
The creek is called Taylor Creek and is lo-
cated on the north side of the Lake.

Pioneer Clean-up Day
Pioneer Community will have the second
Pioneer Clean-up Day Saturday, January 30,
2010 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Covered Dish
Dinner will follow the clean-up. Meet at the
park. Bring work gloves, and buckets for
glass items. At the first clean up day in May,
residents picked up a total of 15,020 pounds

The Clewiston Cougars will be having
their first meeting on Thursday, January 21,
2010, for the 2010 season. We are looking for

ing for football and cheer head coaches.

Clewiston Garden Club
The Clewiston Garden Club cordially in-
vites you to join us for our meetings on every
third Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Clewiston
Museum at 109 Central Avenue in Clewis-
ton. The Clewiston Garden Club decorated
the Hospital Foundation Building. This was
the Garden Club's second annual decorating
of the Hospital Foundation Building plus it
also served as a preparation of the building
for the Lights of Love Lighting campaign.
We purchased poinsettas which were used
to decorate inside the Hospital Foundation
Building and later were delivered to shut in
members. After our Dec. 17 meeting, we
had our Christmas Luncheon at the Clewis-
ton Country Club which was enjoyed by all
members. Visit us soon and have a daisy of
a day!

Indian Historian at Museum
Willie Johns, Seminole historian and
representative of the Ah-Tha-Thi-Ki Mu-
seum at Big Cypress, will weave a story
of the Seminoles tonight at 7 p.m. at The
Clewiston Museum. Johns will tell how
the Seminoles have survived and evolved
in spite of challenges and obstacles. This
promises to be presentation ranging from
history to current day culture. Following
the presentation, attendees can meet Mr.
Johns and share some of their favorite
stories with him. Complimentary tours
of the Clewiston Museum will also be
provided as well as refreshments after the
presentation. The presentation is free to
the public.

Bronson urges citizens to avoid Haiti relief scams
TALLAHASSEE -- Florida Agriculture and
Consumer Services Commissioner Charles
H. Bronson today warned Floridians to be
on the lookout for scams involving relief
aid in the aftermath of this week's massive
earthquake in Haiti.
"The people in Haiti need massive
amounts of aid, and we encourage our citi-
zens to be as generous as possible in help-
ing," Bronson said.
"But you need to make sure that the do-
nations you are planning to make go to le-
gitimate organizations that will benefit Haiti,
and not to con artists who undoubtedly will
try to exploit the tragedy by lining their own
pockets with your donations."
While no known scams have yet to be un-
covered in Florida, con artists typically come
out of the woodwork when tragedies oc-
cur and approach citizens with impressive-
sounding organizations that seek money
over the internet, by phone and sometimes
even in person.
"Don't be tricked into giving money to a
person or organization with which you are
not familiar," Bronson said.
Among approaches that the Commis-
sioner recommends is giving to well-known
organizations, including the American Red
Cross, United Way and the Salvation Army
among many others.
If citizens are contemplating making a
contribution to an organization with which
they are unfamiliar, Bronson encourages
that they contact his Consumer Services Di-
vision at 1-800-HELPFLA (1-800-435-7352)
to make sure that the organization is regis-
tered with the state as a charity and to check
its complaint history.

Robert W. 'Pee Wee' Howard, 77
LABELLE Robert W "Pee Wee" Howard,
passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010, in
Fort Myers. He was 77.
He was born February 4, 1932 in LaBelle, the
son of the late Seth Albert Howard and the late
Winifred (Langford) Howard. He served in the
Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Ethelene (Self) Ho-
ward of LaBelle; sons, Robert L. Howard (Carol)
and Steven Wesley Howard; daughter, Diane
Shields (Kenneth); brothers, Fred Howard and
Wayne Howard, all of LaBelle; sisters, Sandra
Thomas of Cummings, Ga. and Linda Cleghorn
of Cornelia, Ga.; grandchildren, Thomas L. Ho-
ward, Jessica Faith Howard Canaday, R.B. Seth
Howard, Kash Howard, Stephanie Howard, and
Jennifer White; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn
Canaday, Autumn Canaday, Lilly Canaday, Wes-
ton Howard, Macey Howard, Priscilla Vargas, II-
liana Villa and Rubi Chivara.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday,
January 18, 2010, at Fort Denaud Cemetery, La-
Belle, with Seth Howard officiating.

Federal finding signals that Florida
Manatee designation warrants revision
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service an-
nounced today that revising critical habitat
for the Florida manatee is needed, but the
revision process is precluded by higher pri-
ority listing-related actions and funding con-
straints.
Today's decision, commonly known as a
12-month finding, follows a comprehensive
review of all available scientific and com-
mercial information relevant to the revision
of existing critical habitat for the Florida
manatee.
The finding is also the Service's formal
response to the December 2008 revision
petition from the Wildlife Advocacy Project,
Save the Manatee Club, Center for Biological
Diversity, and Defenders of Wildlife.
Critical habitat was originally designated
for the Florida manatee in 1976 in areas of
Citrus, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota,
Charlotte, De Soto, Lee, Collier, Monroe,
Dade, Palm Beach, Martin, West Palm
Beach, Volusia, Brevard, Nassau and Duval
counties.
It was one of the Endangered Species
Act's (Act) first critical habitat designations
for an endangered species and the first for
an endangered marine mammal.
That original critical habitat designation
for the Florida manatee was made before
critical habitat regulations and guidance was
developed.
Therefore, it does not identify those es-
sential features needed for the species con-
servation.
Instead, it describes specific waterways
that were known to be important concen-
tration areas for manatees at that time.
Service biologists also recognize that the
geographic areas originally described as
manatee critical habitat need to be updated,
based on recent scientific studies of manatee
distribution, habitat use, and habitat needs.
Service officials note that a revision of
the critical habitat designation could include
both additions and deletions to the current
designation, and specific areas within and
outside of the geographical area currently
occupied by manatees.
"In addition to the most obvious habitat
needed for the Florida manatee -warm wa-
ter refuges," said Dave Hankla, field super-
visor for the Service's North Florida office
in Jacksonville, "we also may consider ad-
equate forage areas near these refuges, calv-
ing and nursing areas, and important travel
corridors throughout the state."
Critical habitat is a term defined in the
Act.
It identifies geographic areas containing
features essential to the conservation of a
threatened or endangered species that may
require special management considerations
or protection.
The designation of critical habitat does
not affect land ownership or establish a ref-
uge, wilderness, reserve, preserve, or other
conservation area.
It does not allow government or public
access to private lands.
"In this particular case, the Service will
continue to consult with federal agencies
on projects that may impact manatees, re-
gardless of whether these projects occur in
designated critical habitat or not," Hankla
noted.
"Thus, the regulated public will see neg-
ligible change in how we conduct business
under the Act."

Palm Beach PAL boxers win again

Last Saturday, Police Athletic League box-
ing teams from Pahokee and Belle Glade
competed in Boca Raton and won.
Felix Sanchez, 15, who attends Pahokee
Middle/Senior High School, won a decision
against Boca Raton's Adam Moore in a hard-
fought contest.
Sanchez trains at the Palm Beach Sheriff's
PAL boxing gym with his brother, Nicholas.
"The Sanchez brothers have a work ethic
that is second to none," said Deputy Sheriff
Mike LeStrange, who runs the Pahokee PAL
program. "They are in the gym every night
and listen to their coach. The brothers are
highly motivated and determined to suc-
ceed.
"When they enter the gym, they are all
business and all work. It is no surprise why
they are so impressive. I am confident, when
they graduate from high school and college,
that they will be the best at whatever en-
deavor they choose. Again, their work ethic
is second to none. Nicholas has been pro-
moted to team captain."
In addition, Michael Guerrier, 10, who at-
tends Pahokee Elementary School, won a
three-round decision against Broward Sher-
iff's PAL boxer Devon Murphy.
Guerrier dominated rounds two and
three and convincingly won the match.
In addition, Michael is performing well
academically.
Alfredia McCloud, who is the guidance
counselor at Pahokee Elementary, said, "Mi-
chael Guerrier's academic achievement is
very good. His test scores are high."
The boxer's mother, Rosalyn McNeal,
said, "Since Michael has joined the sheriff's
boxing program, his confidence has grown.
He's doing well in school, and he is more
social. Michael attends boxing training every
night."

said, "First and foremost, to lower juvenile
crime and save kids from the perils of juve-
nile delinquency. Our goals are to coordinate
programs and activities which contribute
to the development of character, integrity,
physical and mental fitness. We want to
foster a closer relationship between law en-
forcement officers and youth. We do this by
promoting sports participation with deputy
sheriff's as a deterrent to crime, drug/alco-
hol abuse and gang membership.
"The PAL boxing program is a team effort
between the community and law enforce-
ment officers. We work closely with Assis-
tant Principal Mary Ford of Pahokee Middle/
High School, the parents and Sergeant Flynn
and his community policing unit. The PBSO
PAL boxing program is an avenue to get
kids off the street and get them under a roof
where they are safe and out of trouble," said
the deputy.

Flu shots in Montura Community
The Hendry County Health Department
will be giving free H1N 1-Flu vaccinations at
the Montura Fire Station on Saturday, Janu-
ary 23, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, children and young
adults, especially those in school or attend-
ing college, are at greatest risk for H IN I flu.
Vaccination remains our best protection
against the flu. In addition, caregivers of
very young children are also encouraged to
get the H1N 1 vaccine to prevent transmis-
sion of the flu virus to at-risk groups. Indi-
viduals with certain health conditions like
pregnancy, diabetes, heart disease, asthma,
and kidney disease should also get a H1N1
flu shot because they are at higher risk
of developing flu-related complications.
Again, flu vaccines are the most effective
way to fight the flu. By protecting yourself
and your family, you will help prevent the
spread of the flu. If you have questions or
concerns about the H1N1 flu vaccine, con-
tact your primary care provider.
Fighting H 1N I1 swine flu is a three-step
approach: 1) get a vaccination, 2) practice
everyday prevention (including frequent
hand washing, covering coughs and sneez-

Are we too comfortable?

First Christian Church
I live in a nation where my freedom was
(is) purchased the sacrifices of others, there-
fore, many times I forget that political free-
dom is costly and that it was uncomfortable
for those who purchased my freedom.
I live in a home adequate for my needs. It
is warm in the winter, and cool in the sum-
mer.
The rain and snow cannot penetrate its
roofs and walls. But Lord, I did not build that
house. I did not buy one stick of wood or
one brick.
I did not work one hour to construct it.
Loving, considerate, daring people who
lived before me, sacrificed in order that I
might live in such a house.
They became uncomfortable in order
that I might be comfortable sweating in the
hot sun as they labored.
Lord, I worship in a church building I did
not build. It is adequate for my needs, and
the needs of many others.
In fact, Lord, i would accommodate two
or three times as many as customarily attend
services.
Lord, I enjoy a fellowship with You, and
with Christian people. I can lay my head
on my pillow at night and be conscious of
my sins and shortcomings, and at the same
time, be aware that when I confess them as
a Christian, they are forgiven (I John 1:9).
You experienced great suffering and death
that I might be comforted.
Lord, is it possible that I am too comfort-
able? The only reason others are not enjoy-
ing all these things is because I am unwill-
ing to be uncomfortable to help them enjoy
them.
Am I too politically complacent... letting
others shoulder the responsibility to provide
"the land of the free and the home of the
brave"?
Am I impervious of the fact there are hun-
dreds, yes thousands, within a short distance
of this comfortable church building who
need to know You and the salvation that You
alone can give. Am I too comfortable to get
out and make it happen?

Physically and spiritually too

The recent cold snap has come and gone.
The comments I heard had to do with "This
one is longer than usual!" and "We're not
used to this!"
I wondered if it wasn't anything usual
temperature-wise, just the length of the cold
weather that bothered people most.
The "second shoe hits the floor" when
the power bills come in; reverse-cycle A/C
is not the most efficient way of heating and
more expensive than other systems.
Many of the homes in the region are
not prepared for cold: no insulation in the
building, doors are not sealed, windows are
single-paned and walls are thin. Maybe the
problem isn't the temperature but being
prepared for it.
We are prepared for other contingencies
that happen; extra batteries are in the draw-
er for the flashlights when the need arises,
there is some extra food in the refrigerator
for unexpected guests, cars have spare tires,
people have a spare set of glasses, and so
many things are around "just in case."
I lived in harsher climates for a part of
my life; "cold snaps" lasted months. You just
prepared, that's all.
The Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared",
applies to us all. I've noted that people
who have prepared their "spiritual houses"
weather the hostile seasons of life much bet-
ter, too.
There is a certain amount of "insulation"
that comes from having faith and the prac-
tice of it as a regular part of living.
This is the "house built on rock" spoken
of in Matthew's gospel (chapter 7, v 24ff).
I've noted that those who panic when times
are hard feel they have no place to turn;
their cry is 'Ain't it awful!" (and it is awful
for them.)
Those who have prepared for the hard
times in life look at what is happening and
say "We'll get through this together, Lord,
you've gotten us through in the past and I
know you won't let us down this time!"
Faith means that there is a responsibility
on our part to prepare in advance for what
may come.
There is a practice of faith, but there is
also a storehouse of food, a few dollars
set aside, saving something that otherwise
might be discarded for future use, learning
how to do things ourselves rather than pay-
ing to have them done.
When our recent cold snap hit, I decided
that it wasn't the end of the world, I'd been
through them before, I had what it took to
weather the chilly days, and that it would
come to an end.
Preparations keep us from being unhap-
py and complaining about what we can't
change anyway, get us through the hard
spots in life, let us be forward-looking and
more hopeful than those who get bogged
down in the present moment only, and ap-
ply to us in all parts of life.
Practicing and living by faith takes us
through even in the coldest, darkest or sad-
dest of moments; in our physical homes and
spiritual ones too.
Faith is Our Victory

Through the grace of God we have been
promised the incredible possibility of a real,
live relationship with the divine.
Our appropriate response to this rela-
tionship is one of faith a faith that gets us
through the upheavals and earthquakes of
life.
The word "faith" is one of the most widely
used words in the NT. It is found in the First
Testament through the verbal root aman, or
as we would translate the word, 'Amen."
This word "faith" or "amen" originally
expressed for the Hebrew people the idea
of carrying, bearing, or supporting, such as
a doorpost bearing pillars.
Yahweh is called the "God of Amen." God
is the solid base, the rock, the support, the
"Amen," upon which life must be raised.
Belief is an act of the intellect. Faith,
on the other hand, is an experience of the
whole person.
We may believe that God has the whole
world in his hands, but faith is the act of
trust by which we put ourselves into God's
hands.
Faith is more than knowing that God
is something, it's knowing that God does
something.
Faith is our victory. Victory comes in be-
lieving God enough to step out in faith. The
rest is commentary.
Victory for Joshua took place not when
the walls of Jericho came tumbling down.
The real victory occurred when Joshua
believed, as incredible as it seemed, that
God would do something great that day.
The moment Joshua took that first step
around Jericho, and blew that first horn, the
battle had already been won.
The rest was commentary. The victory
for David was not when he slew the giant
Goliath.
The real victory for David was the miracle
of faith. The moment David took that first
step down into that valley, and expressed his
faith in God's promise with his feet, the vic-
tory was won. The rest was commentary.
The miracle of Peter's walking on water
was not how far he got without sinking.
The real miracle occurred when Peter
lifted his leg over the side of the boat and
stepped out into the deep unknown. That
step was the miracle of faith. The rest was
commentary.
The Bible says we are to live by faith. In
biblical terms, it is more accurate to think of
faith as an active term (being faithful) than
in a passive tense (having faith).
We come with faith as Christians, believ-
ing enough to ask who would cast the first
stone; to reassure the woman at the well
that her life could change; to sit with sinners
and eat with the rich; to believe that right
will triumph and that temples and systems
can change, and to claim that "God is our
refuge and strength, an ever-present help in

The Church of God of Prophecy, in Moore
Haven, will have a thrift shop open on Sat-
urdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., all things are
given for a donation, this is to help for ex-
penses of the church.

Angelfood Ministry
The Clewiston Ministerial Association is
taking orders for Angelfood ministry through
Thursday, Jan. 14.
Open to everyone, Angelfood ministries
provides about $60 worth of food for $30.

made at the Salvation Army, First United
Methodist Church, New Harvest Church,
Calvary Baptist Church, and the Iglesias de
Dios Pentecostal Church.

Yard Sale
Clewiston Gospel Ministries will be hav-
ing a Yard Sale on Friday, Jan. 15 beginning
at 1 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 16 beginning at
8 a.m. located at 6800 Flaghole Road.
This event is to benefit Billy (Bo) Gray. All
donations are welcome.
There will also be a bake sale and car
wash if weather permits. Items include fur-
niture, clothing, tools, knickknacks, toys,
and just a little of everything.

6th Annual Hallelujah
Hoedown!
First Christian Church, 201 N. Francisco
St., will be having its 6th Annual Hallelujah
Hoedown, Jan. 22-24, 7 p.m. each evening.
This year, as in the past, J. D. Miller will
be the Emcee and Kenny Speakes will be the
Humorist Speaker.
Jackie Miller, Minister of First Christian,
will lead the singing between the different
performers.
This year's performers include, "The
Messenger's Quartet" of Lexington, Ky., The
Diggle Family of Lexington, Ky., Lowell Ma-
son, known as "The World's Smallest Gospel
Singer," The Cornwell Twins, Aaron Roberts,
Jerry Trammell, The Ky. Hillbillies, Artie and
Dora Carnes and The Church Choir. There
will be a different program each night.
With the church's recent expanded fa-
cilities and parking lot they hope to seat over
200 for each service.

Evangel Assembly of God
Starting January 2010 our food pantry
ministry "Loaves and Fish" will be distribut-
ing food to families in need from our Out-
reach Center from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. every 1st
and third Wednesday.
Lyver's Fund At First
Christian
On Jan. 8th the mobile home of Bob and
Linda Lyers was gutted by fire.
They lost most of their personal belong-
ings. The Lyvers have two children Jesse,
age 13, and Katie, age 15.
The Red Cross made it possible for them
to stay in a motel for a few days and gave
them clothing allowances.
Judy Vann is allowing them to stay in
rental property until they get another home.
First Christian Church has started a Fund
to help the Lyvers with their needs.
There is an immediate need for beds and
bedding. If you would like to help with this
emergency you may make your checks pay-
able to "First Christian Church" For Lyver's
Fund.

Announces its list of 2010 Inductees B: B

The Selection Committee for The Florida
Citrus Hall of Fame has announced four dis-
tinguished leaders will be inducted into the
Hall as part of the 2010 class.
Earl M. "Duke" Crittenden (deceased) of
Orlando, Bernard A. Egan (deceased) of Ft.
Pierce, Harold B. McTeer of Winter Haven
and Howard E. Sorrells of Arcadia will be
honored during luncheon scheduled on Fri-
day March 5, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. in the Hollis
Wellness Center at Florida Southern College
in Lakeland.
Crittenden, former President and CEO
of Crittenden Fruit Company, has been de-
scribed as one of "the giants of the Florida
Citrus Industry."
He worked in citrus for more than 50
years starting from scratch and emerging
with a diversified citrus empire that included
growing, harvesting, packing, processing
and trucking.
A former chairman of the Republican
Party of Florida, Crittenden was a major po-
litical force, protecting the industry on key
issues.
He was a member of the Florida Citrus
Commission in addition to serving on the
boards of Florida Citrus Mutual, Seald-Sweet
Growers, Citrus Central Inc. and the Grow-
ers Administrative Committee.
Crittenden was a 1953 graduate of the
University of Florida. He was an honorary
member of the Florida Blue Key, the univer-
sity's prestigious public service fraternity,
and a charter member of the UF Bull Ga-
tors.
Egan was actively involved in the devel-
opment and growth of Florida's fresh citrus
industry for more than 65 years. He had a
strong commitment to marketing the high-
est quality products possible.
The former CEO of Bernard Egan & Com-
pany, he formed DNE Sales and guided it to
become the largest marketing agent in the
United States of fresh Florida citrus. Egan
was a pioneer in the development of ex-
port markets to Japan for fresh Indian River
grapefruit.
He also expanded European markets for
fresh Florida citrus. Egan was a Florida Cit-
rus Commissioner, Chairman and President
of the Indian River Citrus League and Presi-
dent of United Growers and Shippers As-
sociation. He was inducted into the Florida
Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2002.
A Haines City citrus grower, McTeer also
worked as a DuPont sales representative
for 27 years. He traveled the state teaching
growers how to use herbicides safely and ef-
fectively in their groves.
He is one of only 15 inductees in the
worldwide DuPont Crop Protection Sales

and Marketing Hall of Fame, the highest
honor within the DuPont organization.
Known as the "go-to" guy for many grow-
ers in the production area, McTeer served 25
years as one of the longest-standing board
members of the Haines City Citrus Growers
Association.
McTeer was a key grower-cooperator
with the Citrus Research and Education
Center (CREC) Plant Improvement Team in
Lake Alfred.
He was always available to provide land,
time and materials for CREC's rootstock and
scion trials.
His contributions allowed many field re-
search projects to become realities and ben-
efit the entire citrus industry.
Sorrells' quiet leadership and commit-
ment to the industry served as a steady,
guiding force during export market expan-
sion efforts and the redirection of industry
marketing strategies.
During his tenure as chairman of the
Florida Citrus Commission, Florida orange
juice sales increased by $1.5 billion dollars
per year at a time when growers were pro-
ducing record crops.
He was also instrumental in establishing
a mechanical harvesting research program
to help growers improve harvesting efficien-
cy and reduce costs.
As President of Sorrells Brothers Packing
Co. Inc. and a Director of Sorrells Groves, he
has been involved with the Florida citrus in-
dustry for 58 years.
He has been on the Board of Florida Cit-
rus Mutual.
He has also been a member of the Peace
River Valley Citrus Growers Association and
the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association.
In addition to citrus, he is a past President
of the National Watermelon Association and
was awarded that association's Lifetime
Achievement Award in 2008.
The Florida Citrus Hall of Fame honors
distinguished leaders who have made sig-
nificant contributions to the Florida citrus
industry.
The Citrus Hall of Fame display and Ar-
chive Center is located within the McKay
Archive Building at Florida Southern College
in Lakeland.

state attorney's office that is handling the
triple homicide case -- that they do a good
enough job of keeping her up to speed
along the way -- but she insists that many
times those calls are merely to inform her
that a new lead attorney will be assigned to
the case, either because the attorney had re-
tired, or just started.
Just as it seems the trial is finally going
to happen, another lawyer is assigned to the
case and must become familiar enough with
the case to move it forward, she said.

The events
Emmanuel Menninger and his wife, Ma-
ria, had traveled to Haiti after he learned that
his mother had passed away on Christmas
Eve. She was buried on Jan. 4, and his plans
were to return to Florida on Jan. 14.
On Tuesday morning, he sent his daugh-
ter an e-mail confirming that he would be
leaving that Thursday. The day went on, ex-
cept that on this day, the home, just 50 miles
north of Port Au Prince, was filled with rela-
tives and family members who talked, joked
and reminisced.
They remembered Pastor Menninger's
mother and hoped for better days.
Just after 4:30 p.m., Maria spied the man-
go tree in the front yard and decided it would
be perfect to pick some off the branches.
Emmanuel, his sister and his niece joined
her, as they traveled round and round the
tree, he remembered, attempting to pick the
hanging fruit rather than let the mangoes fall
to the ground.
And then "everything changed."
It started with a sound.
"We heard a noise, a noise, an unusual
noise."
It sounded like a large truck from the
heavily trafficked roadway seemingly barrel-
ing its way to the home, Emmanuel remem-
bered.
"We said to one another, who, what,
where is that truck. Where is that truck go-
ing?"
And they fell.
"But the second time that we fell, we
heard noise around the neighborhood. Peo-
ple were crying. People were ecstatic about
the whole thing. Mywife and I, we held hands
and we started to pray. We prayed hard for
the next two, three seconds, we prayed so
hard that everybody could hear it."
After the earthquake
Next door to the Menninger estate, a
three-story church simply crumbled to the
ground, and Emmanuel and Maria wit-
nessed horrific scenes.
"I went and ministered to some people
that were affected emotionally and physi-
cally. We saw a man, blood all over him and
he was carrying his child. And a woman was
carrying her child, as well."
The remains of that church's pastor, his
wife and their son were trapped in the de-
bris. Nearby, another woman, who was
pregnant, also died.
around," said Ms. Cardenas. "The state at-
torney's office has assured me (the trial will
start), but they can't seem to keep anybody
there."
Last year, the state attorney's office ex-
plained that an Aug. 31 trial date was pushed
back because more depositions were need-
ed. A new date in December was set. As she
looks at the calendar and finds that the trial
date has come and gone, Ms. Cardenas is
told that the trial should begin in February.
Once it does begin, the court will con-
sider whether Ruby Yolanda Parker is to be
blamed in the Whitaker deaths, along with
the death of Carolyn's mother -- Ms. Carde-
nas' grandmother -- Carolyn Cox Whitaker.
The three were found dead in their
Clewiston home on the morning of Aug.
"The devastation was overwhelming.
It was unspeakable to see people on the
ground, you know, dying, or dead, and blood
all over the place. People panicked, because,
first of all, for the next 15, 20 minutes or so,
people didn't know what happened, what
was going on."
To a nation that had not felt an earth-
quake in more than 250 years -- the last oc-
curring in 1751 -- the event was alien. Not
immediately evident was the scale. Only
when people tuned their battery-powered
radios to the local station did they slowly
begin drawing a picture of the widespread
damage of the earthquake.
There were 22 aftershocks between 5
p.m. and midnight on Tuesday.
"Everytime an aftershock occurred, peo-
ple cry again because they thought it was
coming all over again."
The radio also told people to stay far
away from buildings, and to sleep outside.
Those with front lawns slept there. And for
those less fortunate, roads were barricaded
so that people could sleep on them.
It was not until Friday, when Emmanuel
and Maria traveled to the embassy in Haiti,
that they were flown back to the United
States. His brother worked for World Vision,
and was part of the rescue team, so when
Emmanuel heard that a plane would be trav-
eling to Florida, he told his family he would
be leaving.
The trip was long in the metaphysical
sense. Once again, he met people who had
lived through the quake. He met a 13-year-
old whose parents had died. He talked to
them about being sent to the states for ref-
uge.
"I heard some of the comments that
were made by some people, that it was
judgment of God on them. Maybe they have
done something wrong that they should re-
ally rethink their whole life. I heard that time
and time again throughout our journey from
the compound to the embassy and even on
the bus."
Moving on
The pastor thanks all those in Clewiston
who prayed for his safe return. He is grate-
ful.
"There are few stories of people who
made it out alive. We are among them.
Those are the blessed ones, I would say, be-
cause God has a purpose, I believe, in this
tragedy."
Pastor Menninger still is shaken. While at
the embassy awaiting transport to America,
any noise reminded him of the earthquake.
To close his eyes is to draw images of the
event, but he knows that in time he will be

expressed concern that they had not been
able to contact the usually communicative
parents.
Police searched for the suspect, Richard
Harker, catching up to him and Parker at the
Big Cypress Indian Reservation. Harker shot
himself and died, while Parker was taken to
jail, the lone person charged in the deaths of
the three people.
Until then, Ms. Cardenas waits, and hopes
that justice will come soon.
"I'm wanting to have another baby, but
I don't want to do that with all of this," said
Ms. Cardenas. "It just consumes our life, all
of this stuff does. I want it over with."

Even now, to understand the death
toll is difficult. Some figures are as high as
200,000, which would be one of the worst
natural disasters in the world within the last
century. If it were compared to some of
America's greatest disasters, then the Haiti
Earthquake would equal one-hundred-and-
one Katrinas.
"Psychologically, it's going to take a long,
long time before they recover. And for some
people, they may never recover. Haiti will
never be the same. It will never be the same
after this. I don't know what it will look like
20 years from now, but I know for a long
time to come, Haiti has changed completely
in the minds and in the hearts of every Hai-
tian."
