Two kids riding ATV struck
Injured flown by
helicopter to hospital
By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
MONTURA Two children driv-
ing an ATV on a Montura road
were seriously hurt on Christmas
Eve. Jose A. Trevino, 13, and Felix
Alberto Quinonez, 11, were struck
by a car and were transported by
helicopter and ambulance to hos-
pitals.
Their condition as of press time
was not known, but the Florida
Highway Patrol is reporting that
each suffered "incapacitating inju-
ries, serious injuries," when their
ATV was jolted off the road, over-
turning from the impact.
The incident happened at ap-
proximately 1:30 p.m. at the inter-
section of Bald Cypress and North
Kennel.
Trevino and passenger Quino-
nez were traveling south on North
Kennel, and stopped at the inter-
section. According to a report re-
leased by FHP, however, the driver
failed to yield to oncoming traffic.
A car traveling west on Bald Cy-
press, driven by 30-year-old Ben-
jamin Rodriguez Ofray, struck the
ATV on the left side and threw the
ATV off the roadway. The driver
and passenger of the ATV were
ejected from the force of the col-
lision.
Neither of the ATV riders was
reported to be wearing a helmet at
the time of the crash. They were
transported to Lee Memorial Hos-
pital and Health Park Medical Cen-
ter for treatment. The driver of the
car was wearing his seatbelt and
suffered no injuries, according to
FHP spokesperson Lt. Christopher
Miller.

New director settles

By Jose Jesus Zaragoza

For six months years ago, Eric
Tommerdahl worked with felons
in prison who were serving life and
needed to squeeze every bit of un-
derstanding from a resource of law
books and legal journals.
As a librarian at the facility, his
job was to give prisoners what they
needed to defend accusations of
serious crimes, and in some cases,
even murder.
There, within the facility walls
dating back to the 1800s, he never
took his safety for granted.
"I was constantly looking over
my shoulder," Clewiston's new li-
brary director recalled. "If you ever
felt comfortable, you were in the
wrong job."
Despite this, Mr. Tommerdahl
decided to move on to greener
pastures, and on the day of his de-
parture, co-workers, friends, and
the inmates themselves wished
him good luck for having had the
foresight to leave.
He was out of the field for two
years before he decided to answer
a job listing online for a library di-
rector position in Clewiston. On

agency listed the ATV driver's fail-
ure to yield right-of-way as the
major contributing cause of the
accident.
"There are no charges at this

The accident highlights the im-

vehicles off major roads -- a prob-

FWC: Slow down for panthers at dusk and beyond
A Florida panther met an untimely death
in the early morning hours of Dec. 17, after
a collision with a vehicle on Interstate 75 in
Broward County, near the Broward-Collier
county line. Fourteen panthers have been
killed on roadways in Florida so far in 2009,
and that has wildlife officials concerned. The
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Com-
mission (FWC) urges motorists to be vigilant
while driving as daylight fades.
To avoid collisions with roaming pan-
thers, the FWC requests that motorists obey
posted speed limits and remain on guard for
panthers crossing roads at dusk and later.
Panthers tend to be more active during
the hours between dusk and dawn, when
most automobile strikes occur. The driver
of the vehicle in the early-morning collision
saw the panther at the last minute and could
not avoid the collision because of the speed
of the vehicle. FWC biologists note that pan-
others often make a sudden dash as a car ap-
proaches, limiting the ability to avoid an ac-
cident, especially when drivers are traveling
at higher speeds. To help protect the large
cats from increasing traffic threats, the FWC,
along with sheriff's deputies and the Florida
Highway Patrol, actively enforce panther
speed zones in Lee and Collier counties.
Panther speed zones are well-marked, with
speed limits reduced at night to 45 mph.
Motorists who violate panther speed
zones often receive fines exceeding $200 for
their first offense. There is a mandatory court
appearance for any violation of more than
29 mph over the posted limit. Though Flor-
ida has experienced a significant increase
in panther numbers, from an estimated 30
animals 20 years ago to approximately 100
today, Darrell Land, FWC biologist and pan-
ther team leader, cautions that the species is
far from recovered.
"Panther deaths, including those from ve-
hicle strikes, have increased, in part because
of a rise in its numbers," Land said. "In spite
of the modest increase in numbers, every
cat remains important to the survival of the
species in the wild."
The number of Florida panthers killed by
collisions with vehicles has been on the in-
crease since 2000, ranging from 6 to 15 per
year. The highest figure occurred in 2007
when 15 panthers are known to have died
on state highways.
"Motorists also should be aware that pan-
thers are not always struck in posted pan-
ther speed zones," Land said. "We caution
motorists to be on the lookout for the large
cats in wild areas near panther zones, espe-
cially around sundown."
The FWC has worked diligently for more
than 20 years to reduce panther highway
mortality. Work by FWC biologists has been
successful in increasing the population of
Florida panthers and restoring the genetic
health and vigor of the panther population.
Much of the funding for panther research
and monitoring comes from fees collected
when residents purchase panther specialty
license plates.
"Research by biologists includes field
studies on the panther to determine den-
ning habits and movement patterns," said
Kipp Frohlich, leader of the FWC's Imperiled
Species Management Section. "All of these
studies aid in the long-term survival and re-
covery of the Florida panther."

panther, go to www.floridapanthernet.org.

The story of the Battle of Hatcheelustee
By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum
The Second Seminole War was fast ap-
proaching its second year and it was clear
that so far, the Gods of War had not favored
the American commanders.
Capable and experienced soldiers like
General Gaines, General Clinch and General
Winfield Scott had met the enemy and failed
to defeat him.
In the summer of 1836, President Jackson
gave the Florida command to Florida Gover-
nor Call, who unknowingly, would follow in
the footsteps of his predecessors.
Governor Call's methods met with little
success against a resourceful, but elusive
enemy, while diseases and logistics plagued
his armies and crippled all of his strategic
plans.
On Dec. 9, 1836, Governor Call lost not
only his Florida command, but also his rela-
tionship to a longtime friend, President An-
drew Jackson.
Jackson accused Call for not being ag-
gressive enough and replaced him with
General Jesup, who was fighting the Creeks
in Alabama.
A bewildered Governor Call, soon parted
ways with his ole friend, President Andrew
Jackson, whom he felt had betrayed him.
Neither Governor Call, nor President An-
drew Jackson, ever reconciled their differ-
ences.
It is ironic that General Jesup was cho-
sen as the next Florida commander because
he was currently serving under General
Winfield Scott, a former commander in the
Florida Theater.
It is also probably fair to say that General
Jesup was ready for a transfer, since he and
General Winfield Scott were clashing on the
finer points of military protocol.
Some of General Jesup's problems with
General Scott were very similar to those that
General Gaines had earlier encountered,
while serving under General Winfield Scott
in the Florida Theater.
General Jesup's issues like those of for-
mer General Gaines, were adjudicated in a
court of inquiry.
Neither General Scott nor General Jesup
was found guilty of the accusations each ac-
cused the other of.
When General Jesup took command of
Florida, he like his predecessors, believed
the only way to end the war was to drive the
Seminoles from their strongholds along the
Withlachoochee River.
Unlike his predecessors, he disliked divid-
ing his force into smaller units.
Instead, he reasoned that a single, larger
force of men would be easier to command
in the field than several smaller forces, due
to the logistic challenges of the Florida Wil-
derness.
However, this idea was soon disregarded
as General Jesup became more acquainted
with the Florida Wilderness and the Semi-
nole tactics.
In time, General Jesup's strategy would
revolve around deployment of soldiers to
wherever the enemy made an appearance.
This deployment made his detachments
more mobile, while at the same time, keep-
ing them in constant contact with the en-
emy.
The new tactics General Jesup employed
became far more successful than those of
early commanders.
Constant pressure on the enemy was
yielding success. Small skirmishes started
favoring the American forces, as well as
the capture of Seminoles and many of their
Black allies.
On Jan. 8, 1837, Brig. Gen. Thomas Je-
sup gave Colonel Henderson command of
the Army's 2nd Brigade, which included the
Marines and friendly Creek allies.
On Jan. 23 near Lake Apopka, a detach-
ment including Capt. John Harris' company
of "Horse Marines," fought a large body of
Seminoles. Five days later, Henderson led
his force of Marines and Creeks into the
Great Cypress Swamp to find the main body
of Indians.
When the friendly Creeks (Creek Indians
wore white turbans to identify themselves
as friend) made contact with the Seminoles,
Henderson ordered the Marines into the
battle. In the dense swamp, the Marines and
the Creeks engaged the enemy across the
Hatchee-Lustee River, a deep 20-yard-wide
stream. Marines and Creeks extended them-
selves along the river bank and laid down a
cross-fire.
When the Seminole's fire slackened, the
troops plunged across the river by swim-
ming or crossing on logs.
The Seminoles started retreating. Colonel
Henderson's force then pursued the Semi-
noles for half a mile, through an even more
difficult stretch of swamp.
Six Marines died as the Seminoles made
repeated stands in the fierce action.
The outcome of the battle rekindled ne-
gotiations with the Seminoles. Several Semi-
nole leaders came in and discussed peace
terms with General Jesup, which resulted in
an armistice that was suppose to last until
Feb. 18, 1837.
The armistice failed to stop the blood-
shed on Florida's wild frontier, but it even-
tually brought the Seminole leaders back to
the negotiating table at Fort Dade, on March
6, 1837.
Only a small number of Seminole lead-
ers came in to negotiate the peace terms.
The document they signed became known
as the "Capitulation of the Seminole nation
of Indians and their allies by Jumper, Hola-
toochee, and Yaholoochee, representing the
principle chief Micanopy."
The treaties provisions basically stated
that all hostilities would cease and that the
Seminoles would gather south of the Hills-
bourgh River, where they would wait until
shipped west.
General Jesup had always interpreted the
Seminole War as a Negro War and acted ac-
cordingly during the peace negotiations.
He knew that the success of the Capitula-
tion document depended on how he treated
the Seminole Negroes, who were now in-
grained in the Seminole Culture.
Jesup made sure the Negroes were pro-
tected in the document by stating that Ne-
groes living in Florida were allies of the Sem-
inoles and would be allowed to accompany
the Seminoles west.
Jesup rationalized that this document
would end the Negro problem (slavery is-
sues) as well as the Seminole War.
The Second Seminole War was starting
to look like it was coming to an end as vari-
ous groups of Seminoles started gathering
around Tampa Bay for their trip west.
What looked like an ending to an unpop-
ular war was overturned when Seminole
leaders, Osceola and Sam Jones, convinced
or threatened the waiting Seminoles that
they should return back to the swamps and
continue the war.
Needless to say, General Jesup was very
upset when approximately 700 Seminoles
slipped back into the liquid green swamps.
It was at this point that a frustrated General
Jesup made the decision to use whatever
means it took to capture the Seminoles and
ship them west.
This decision would later make General
Jesup the most controversial General of the
Second Seminole Indian War.

Local citizens join in the Audubon
Christmas bird count
Binocular brigades may be

Join volunteers for the 3rd annual Christ-
mas Bird Count at STA5 and the surrounding
15 mile area organized by Hendry-Glades
Audubon on Saturday Jan. 2, 2010.
Teams will begin at 7 a.m. Participants
may help for half to full day.
The post count event will be held in

The longest running Citizen Science sur-
vey in the world, Audubon's annual Christ-
mas Bird Count (CBC) will take place be-
tween Dec. 14, and Jan. 5, 2010.
From Alaska to Antarctica, tens of thou-
sands of volunteers will add a new layer to
over a century of data vital to conservation.
Armed with binoculars, several local vol-
unteers will join this Citizen Science initia-
tive to count birds in our region.
Scientists rely on these data to better un-
derstand how birds and the environment we
share are faring.
Just like canaries in the coal mine, birds
serve as early indicators of problems that
can eventually affect people and wildlife.
Data from Audubon are at the heart of
several scientific reports. CBC data informed
the first U.S. State of the Birds Report, issued
earlier this year by the Department of the In-
terior.
CBC analysis also fueled Audubon's re-
port that Climate Change is already having
an impact on birds across the continent.
The Christmas Bird Count began in 1900
when the founder of Bird-Lore (the progeni-
tor of Audubon magazine), Frank Chapman,
suggested an alternative to the "side hunt,"
in which teams competed to see who could
shoot the most game, including birds.
Chapman proposed that people "hunt"
birds only to identify, count, and record
them.

es in resident populations and ranges.
"When Frank Chapman started the
Christmas Bird Census, it was a visionary
act," said Audubon President John Flicker.
"No one could have predicted how im-
portant the CBC would become as a re-
source and tool for conservation."
CBC data also help document success
stories. The Christmas Bird Count helped
document the comeback of the previously
endangered Bald Eagle, and significant in-
creases in waterfowl populations, both the
result of conservation efforts.
"Each CBC volunteer observer is an im-
portant contributor, helping to shape the
overall direction of bird conservation," says

New Year Priorities
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Chrisian Church
What will be your priorities as you plan the New
Year? Many will make resolutions to lose weight by
,ii._. less and exercising more. It's amazing how
much time and money is spent in keeping our bod-
ies in shape. I Timothy 4:8 says "Physical training is
of some value, but godliness has value for all things,
promise for both the present life and the life to
come." But the Bible does teach us that our bodies
are the "temple of the Holy Spirit" and if we destroy
our bodies through indulgence, drugs or abuse, God
will destroy us." Many people do not take care of
their physical bodies and abuse them with tobacco,
food, alcohol and even prescription drugs and then
blame God when they get sick.
Karen Phelps, a distance runner wrote: "On this
particular day, I didn' i. I .i ........i . .. - so I had
a set plan for training. 1.Run daily, even if you don't
feel like it. 2.Run daily, even if you sometimes have
to skip fun and pleasure. 3.Run daily, even in bad
weather even if people think you're weird. 4.Run
daily, even when it gives you aches and pains and
you feel like quitting. 5. Run daily, even if you don't
feel it's doing you any good. "One day, she contin-
ues, "as I jogged along on my training run, it came
to me that I ii i, i,. ....... ii waswhat my SPIRI-
TUAL LIFE NEEDED! Do you know what I learned?
Sometimes you may not feel like praying, reading
the Bible, going to church, or going out of your way
to help others. But if you're in training Physical or
Spiritual -YOU DO IT!"
What that says to me is we not only should
care for our physical bodies but also for our spiri-
tual well-being as well. We should be as interested
in growing in Christ as we are in our daily exercise
program. Some have a chart fixed so they can fol-
low their progress in their exercise. Do you "chart"
your quest for spiritual growth? You can chart your
spiritual growth by reading your Bible more, pray-
ing more and forgiving others who offend you. You
know if you are still filled with jealousy, bitterness, or
resentment. You may be in perfect physical condi-
tion, but how is your spiritual condition?
Another verse that reminds us that we should
prosper both physically and spiritually is III John
2 "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou may-
est prosper and be in health, EVEN AS THY SOUL
PROSPERETH." What if tomorrow you woke up to
find your physical health was as good as your spiri-
tual health? What if when you looked in the mirror
you saw, not your physical face, but the face of your
spirit?
We have a lot of improvements to make in both
body and spirit for 2010, so let's all get to work!
Christmas isn't over yet... or
ever!
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D.+
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
There is something sad about packing up after
Christmas; putting away the tree, taking down the
lights, packing up the decorations. Holidays come
..and go... another one comes along or another
year passes. Many Churches count the Sunday after
Christmas as "Low Sunday".
Attendance is down and the holiday spirit has
waned. There is something special, though, about
after Christmas. It is not the end of the story, it is only
the very beginning. We can look back on Christmas;
not because it is over, but because of what hap-
pened;... because the Lord came into this world.
We celebrate the -, ,., ii .... of our children, not
because school is finished but because new doors
will be open. We celebrate promotions because they
mark a new start in a career or a new role in the ser-
vice; not because they are the end. I remember my
ordinations, not because they were the culmination
of studies and response to a call to ministry, but be-
cause of the opportunity to serve that they brought.
Likewise Christmas; the Lord came into this world
so that we might have a better life here, and an even
better life hereafter. Jesus tells us that "I have come
that they may have life, and have it to the full (John
10:10)."
He has left the manger and the stable to become
the shepherd; and will lay down His life for the sheep
that follow Him (v.11). Indeed, He did lay down His
life for us; now is the time to live in the fullness of that
life He gave us. His birthday is remembered for what
it meant; ,,-i .iii us instead. I knewofa group
in one Church I served that celebrated "Christmas in
July." It was complete with presents, music, dinners,
and all of the rest except the weather was warmer.
When I asked "What is this about?" the answer was
that "Christmas is too good to celebrate just once
during the ,,' and they were right! In fact, we cel-
ebrate each time one is born into the world, or each
time something special happens to us, or each time
something new and wonderful comes into our lives.
The words echo..." that they may have life and
have it to the full." The gift of Christmas comes so
many times that we don't even make the connect
tion. Christmas will continue because the Lord has
intended His faithful to continue until the end of
time; and no matter what, He intends that we have
life and have it abundantly. When we study the dat-
ing and history of Christmas, many arguments can
be made for Jesus being born in 4 B.C., (when it was
calculated that stars would have converged in the
East), or later in the season (as Orthodox Christians
celebrate it) or at another time.
We've picked the date for Christmas from our tra-
ditions; maybe we really don't know! Maybe Christ-
mas can be celebrated all of the time after all. Maybe
it should be!
New Beginnings
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
It's fun to play with all the brand-new possibili-
ties open to us on January 1. Go jogging on January
1, and you've exercised every day this year. You can
come to breakfast and truthfully announce, "I'm so
hungry, I feel as if I haven't eaten since last 1,' Get
through lunch without ,ii._.. potato chips or a candy
bar, and this year reflects a whole new healthy and
perfectly kept diet regime. On January 1, at least for
some time, you've never yelled at the kids, forgotten
to floss, thrown your dirty clothes on the bathroom
floor, nor have forgotten to read the Bible all year!
On January 1 our whole life can be transformed.
For one day at least, all our good intentions can
be jump-started, and all our bad habits can be un-
plugged. At least for a few hours (or minutes?), the
year is a perfect reflection of our best self.
But January 1 is followed inevitably by January 2
and January 3. Soon we will opt for staying in a cozy
bed a few more minutes rather than plunging out
into the cold for that jog. Pretty soon candy wrap-

Pretty soon, we will surely get aggravated enough at
a bad driver or frustrating situation to have unsancti-
fled thoughts. Before we know it, our socks are back
on the bathroom floor, our dental floss is gathering
dust, and we fall asleep before we can even get the
Bible open.
For all but a few of us, most New Year's resolu-
tions get packed away with the last of the Christmas
decorations. The problem with most of our resolu-
tions is that we resolve to make changes in our life-
styles, but miss restructuring our lives and changing
the paradigms by which we live.
The best resolution we can make can be found in
the Gospel of Luke when 12 year old Jesus answered
his parents as to why he acted as he did, "Didn't you
know I would be about my Father's business?"
The ultimate New Year's resolution does not
challenge us to cut fat grams, or quit smoking or get
to aerobics class twice a week. The ultimate resolu-
tion a Christian can make is to make it our business
to be a part of God's business.
What's God's business? God's business is trans-
formation. An electrical transformer takes high volt-
age and transforms it into energy that we can use
in our everyday lives. Without a transformer, there
could be no light in the darkness. At Bethlehem, God
came to us and gave us Jesus, who transforms in His
life the love and power of God into an energy that we
can use and experience in our lives everyday.
A fresh New Year lies unblemished before us.
Our life and commitment to making God's business
our business can help the love of God through Christ
transform the world.

issue is most pressing in the outlying com-
munity of Montura, where a rural communi-
ty connected by a network of long roadways
and plenty of off-road terrain is an attractive
area for ATV users.
That the two under aged drivers were
not wearing helmets while conducting the
vehicle is additionally worrisome, the lieu-
tenant said.
Lt. Miller underscored the inherent dan-
ger of driving ATVs on roadways normally
occupied by much larger vehicles.
"They should not be on the roadway, ab-
solutely," the lieutenant said. "They have no
business there and are dangerous."

McAvoy Excels in National
Chicken Barbeque Competition
Submitted By Sonja Crawford
Andy McAvoy, Hendry County 4-H mem-
ber, achieves ninth place in the Nation in the
Chicken Barbeque Competition during the
National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in
Louisville, Kentucky, Nov. 18 and Nov. 19.
Andy started his grill promptly at 8:45 am
in the cold, windy, 50-degree weather grilling
four chicken halves in the time allotment of
2 1/2 hours. Andy prepared his chicken with
a rub of Sweet and Smokey Grill Mates and
Mrs. Dash Mesquite Grill. During the last 20
minutes of cooking Andy sauced his chick-
en with KC Masterpiece original barbeque
sauce. Approximately 10:30 a.m, Andy placed
his best two barbequed chicken halves in an
enclosed container displaying his contestant
number to the contest coordinator to be pre-
sented to a panel of judges to be scored for
cooking skills as well as sensory evaluation.
The cooking skills score sheet consisted of
equipment and utensils, appearance and
cleanliness, starting the fire, controlling the
fire, preparing chicken for grilling, and bar-
bequing skill with a total possible points of
70. The sensory evaluation score sheet, 80
points possible, consisted of degree of done-
ness, appearance, texture, taste, as well as
after taste.
The final step in the contest was an oral
presentation. Andy's oral presentation titled
"Chicken: It's What's for Supper" consisted
of the broiler industry, inspection of poultry,
food safety, nutrition, and barbeque safety.
Presentations were presented in front of a
panel of two judges with a maximum of ten
minutes to present.
Not only did Andy enjoy competing in

College Reach Out Program at CHS
At Clewiston High School, a club has
existed for three years with scant notice.
This club, the College Reach Out Program,
actively seeks to foster good citizenship and
encourage strong academic performance in
its students with a focus upon participation
in college in the future. This organization,
sponsored by Florida Gulf Coast University,
regularly carries out community service ac-
tivities, offers homework help, fosters stu-
dent leadership, assists students with finding
scholarships, offers help for enrolling in col-
lege, and gives students a chance to explore
colleges all around the state. Since 2009, the
club has seen regular increases in student
participation (beginning with less than ten
students in 2007 and standing at a strong
participating base of 30 students with more
than 70 enrolled in 2009). In 2008, CHS
CROP received an award for the "Best New
Community Service Project" of any CROP
chapter in Southwest Florida and roughly
$2,000 in scholarships for two participants,
Kelvin Lawson and Wotts Mercy. 2009 has
started strong with ten students earning trips
to various colleges throughout the state from
successfully winning opportunities through
essay contests, a club visit to FGCU's Eagle
Expo, a community cleanup, some fundrais-
ing, an opportunity for students to help out
at a nursing home, and a first place win at
the Florida Gulf Coast University Brain Bowl
competition on November 21, 2009. The
year is not even quite half finished and the
club has already set a higher standard for it-
self than the prior two, with hopes that the
year to come will be even stronger.
The Clewiston High School Brain Bowl
team consists of Tyler Clements (team cap-
tain), Wotts Mercy (CROP chapter presi-
dent), Krista Gutierrez, Osbaldo Garcia,
Jazmine Thompson, and Enedina Martinez.
At the regional competition, which will take
place in Miami, these lucky Clewiston High
School students have a chance to win a four
year, fully-paid scholarship to almost any col-
lege in the state. Already training hard, they
are looking forward to a chance to represent
their school, state, family, and county.
This coming February, Beef O'Brady's
will be hosting a series of fundraisers on
Tuesday. All their customers need to do in
order to see 15% of their bill donated to the
CHS CROP program is bring a small voucher
that will be available at area businesses or
through the school. Beef's customers may
also choose to participate in a raffle (tick-
ets will be $1 a piece) for some wonderful
prizes.
Hendry County is facing some tough situ-
ations this year, but for those of our students
who are focusing on the future through this
program, times couldn't look a whole lot
better. With the assistance of the commu-
nity, a wide variety of new experiences may
open up for these students.

Prepare for new driver's license regulations
Florida is leading the nation in an effort
to provide our residents with a more secure
identification document, aimed at fighting
fraud and making sure the only people who
get a driver's license or ID card are those au-
thorized to have one.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, Floridians renew-
ing or obtaining a new driver license/identi-
fication card will be required to show proof
of:
1) identification (certified US birth certifi-
cate including territories and the District of
Columbia a hospital birth certificate is not
acceptable; a valid US passport; certificate
of naturalization; or consular report of birth
abroad;
2) Social Security number- one of the fol-
lowing original documents: Social Security
card; W-2 form; paycheck showing number;
DD-214; school record showing number; or
documentation from the IRS showing num-
ber; and
3) two items of residential address. The
address on a driver's license can no longer

rector, while anticipating opportunities for
expanding library offerings.
His typical day involves "epic to-do lists,"
although he has already put work into
programs such as the bilingual story time
"Cuentos Para Ninos," as well as a Saturday
story time program, "Stories on Saturday."
The programs are offered once a month, but

residential address (deed, mortgage, month-
ly mortgage payment booklet or rental
agreement); Florida voter registration card;
Florida vehicle registration card; Florida ve-
hicle registration or title; W-2 form or 1099
form; utility bill, hookup or work order not
more than two months old, current auto or
homeowner's insurance policy or bill; mail
from financial institutions not more than
two months old; letter from a shelter or half-
way house verifying that applicant lives at
the address; educational transcripts for cur-
rent school year; or statement from an ac-
companying parent, step-parent or guardian
residing at the same address as applicant.
The parent or guardian must present proof
of residential address.
To help residents navigate through these
new requirements, the Florida Department
of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles
(DHSMV) launched a communication initia-
tive encouraging Floridians to gather your
documents, go to a driver license office and
So what is the difference between a li-
brary in a state prison, and a municipal li-
brary?
"Well, it's a lot safer in a regular library,"
Mr. Tommerdahl joked. "But there's a differ-
ence in psyche because they're not getting
out."
Indeed it was the chance that he could
make a real difference in the lives of people
that spurred him to return to a library sys-
tem.
Literacy among children is one of his pri-
orities. It is also reflected in literature found
on the city of Clewiston's web site urging
kids of any young age who "can print their

campaign launched to the general public
early-July 2009.
Florida residents obtaining a new license,
replacing a lost/stolen card or changing their
name prior to their renewal date should visit
an issuing office with new forms of docu-
mentation ready for processing.
You do not need to go to the driver's li-
cense or tax collector's office on Jan. 1.
These rules will take effect for you whenever
yo make your next regularly scheduled in-
person visit to renew your license.
Floridians looking to renew a driver li-
cense are allowed to do so by a convenience
method (Internet or mail) up to one time.
Following this convenience option, your
next renewal must be in a driver license or
tax collector office, at which time you will be
asked to provide required documentation.
That is, most people will still have the option
to renew their license by mail or online ev-
ery other time it expires. Eventually, the state
will send you a letter that says you must go
first and last name," to apply.
The library is part of a cooperative that
sees the Barron Library in LaBelle, as well
as the Harlem Community Public Library,
and the Clewiston branch working closely
with one another to share resources and
services.
The new director has wonderful things to
say of just how well the library is utilized.
"There is very strong public support (of
the library), and a great deal of pride in it,"
he said. If anything, he would like those who
currently are not using the library to visit it
and make use of the books, computers, and
other reading materials that are available.
to an office in person. That's when you must
bring the four documents.
If Florida drivers and ID card holders do
not visit a driver license office by Dec. 1,
2014 and Dec. 1, 2017 (depending on their
birthday) and present required documenta-
tion for their new card, they will not be al-
lowed to board a commercial flight or enter
a federal building.
Residents are able to visit the campaign
Web site GatherGoGet.com and create a
personalized checklist of documents needed
to obtain their new driver license or identifi-
cation card.
The "Gather. Go. Get." campaign includes
a combination of statewide partnership out-
reach, publicity initiatives, a paid advertising
component and Web site launch.
Call before you go to the Driver's License
Office, 674-4022 Tuesday through Friday
from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. for questions or appoint-
ments.
Away from the job, Mr. Tommerdahl en-
joys academic pursuits, and pokes fun of his
relaxed personal life: "I'm not a real interest-
ing kind of guy," he insists.
Further prodding reveals that he majored
in 20th Century German History.
"There are few things more depressing
than what happened in Germany in the 20th
century," he said. "I wanted something more
uplifting -- something more living."

ton Library, or its programs, contact the li-
brary at 863-983-1493.
