Final site selection
anticipated, with two
local spots among
choices
By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
Much has been made about
the state's announcement to
purchase U.S. Sugar and restore
the natural flow of water to the
Everglades. The vast chunks of
properties will be converted from
farming to state-owned tracts,
making it possible for the South
Florida Water Management Dis-
trict to begin returning the land to
its natural function.
But to residents in Clewiston,
Belle Glade, South Bay, and even
outlying areas such as Moore
Haven, the news is a rather un-
welcome one. To these towns
- which have historically had
higher than average unemploy-
ment rates, more recently and
quite sharply compounded by a
bleak economy throughout the

today
country -- the news simply means
that more people will be losing
their jobs.
In Clewiston, the question be-
comes: What happens to a com-
pany town when the company
packs up and leaves?
Well, if plans are any indica-
tion, the answer to these woes
can be found in the inland port
concept. Spearheaded by the Port
of Palm Beach, the construction
of an inland port would serve as a
distribution hub for cargo through
rail and highway traffic, drawing
commercial traffic away from
the east coast, and tapping into
worldwide trade shipping across
the Atlantic Ocean through ports
in Palm Beach, Miami and Bro-
ward.
If any of the local sites are
selected, the redirection of com-
mercial activity to U.S. 27 and the
commercial hub itself have the
potential to create thousands of
new jobs in an area that is strug-
gling in the face of layoffs, set-
backs, cutbacks, a drop in taxes

The RAK Club from Clewiston Christian School had a very sat-
isfied customer who wanted another sample from their booth
at the Clewiston City Market on Saturday. The club members
made all natural dog and cat treats to sell and were giving out
samples to pets in attendance. This pet loved the Peanut Butter
Poochie Treats and wanted another taste! All funds raised by
the sale of the pet treats were donated to the Active Citizens
For Children.

Local group to bring in snow by the truckload

Winter Wonderland
event returns this
year, local kids
welcome
By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
In 2006, around the holidays,
Clewiston kids spotted a unique
phenomenon in South Florida:

snow.
The local group Active Citizens
for Children (ACFC) planned for
months before the event, helping
to raise money to pay to cart 20
tons of snow to Clewiston. After
all the work and effort put into
making the program a reality, the
fruit of their efforts was evident on
the faces of all of the children who
delighted in playing with snow --
for most, it was the first time they

ever had.
ACFC is at it again this year,
planning for a bigger event. Orga-
nizers and members in the group
are hoping that residents will come
out and take advantage of a snowy
Florida holiday.
Brenda Holcomb is the presi-
dent of the group, which was es-
tablished in 2006 by parents who
wanted to host activities for local
children and engage them in ways

they normally are not engaged.
Almost immediately, the Winter
Wonderland event seemed like a
perfect fit.
Winter in Florida conjures imag-
es of a Fall in some northern state,
the weather never really lending
itself to the concept of a traditional
holiday -- of crafting snow angels,
or snowmen, of snug winter hats
or earmuffs. While the league

Glades Central stunned in Class 2A state title game

Raiders offense shut down
in second half; Belle Glade
loses title game

By Naji Tobias
INI Florida
ORLANDO- Jessie Hester, the Glades Cen-
tral Raiders head coach, made a very telling
analysis on his quarterback, L.J. Thomas.
"As L.J. Thomas goes, so does the team,"
he said earlier this season.
In his final game with the Raiders, Thom-
as was anything but himself.
To put that into context, there wasn't
much of a rhythm between Thomas and his
wide receivers.
And the offense, as a whole, failed to ex-
ecute on key plays for much of this year's
Class 2A state championship game against
the Cocoa Tigers.
It played a big role in how the Raiders,
who came into this game as the No. 13 team
overall in the Rivals100 national rankings,
lost the state championship to Cocoa, 27-
13.
Thomas (20-for-39 passing, 294 yards, 1
TD, 2 INT) was sacked six times by Cocoa's
tenacious defense, which explains a lot in
how he was rattled for much of the game.
"Cocoa kept the pressure on us all night
long," Thomas said of Cocoa's defense.
"They ran a three-man front and their line-
backers just flew to me. They just simply ex-

Class 2A state title game, an 8-yard run that put the Raiders up 6-0 in the first
quarter.

ecuted and we had some mental mistakes,
which cost us in the end."
Aside from two touchdowns by Raiders
senior running back Antwon Chisolm an
8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter,
followed by a 16-yard touchdown catch

from Thomas with 9:17 left in the second -
Glades Central's offense was basically shut
down the rest of the way.
Down 13-3 after Chisolm's second touch-
down, Cocoa's offense went to work and
used their game plan to near perfection.

Only four passes were thrown by Cocoa
quarterback Matthew Younger all comple-
tions.
But the Tigers didn't need to throw much;
they just used the running of Chevelle Buie
to pull them through, as he registered 27 car-
ries for 215 yards and two touchdowns.
It took just two plays for Cocoa to pull
within three, as Buie ran right through
Glades Central's defense for a 62-yard touch-
down with 8:24 left in the first half.
When Glades Central got the ball back,
it proved to be a downright disastrous drive
for them, as Thomas threw a very direct in-
terception to Cocoa defensive back Antonio
Wallace.
The first down play, from Glades Central's
own 20 yard line, ended in Wallace's 28-yard
interception return for a touchdown, which
gave Cocoa a 17-13 lead.
In Glades Central's opportunity at regain-
ing the lead, the next offensive series ended
just as badly, with Thomas throwing his sec-
ond pick of the game.
Only this time it was an end-zone inter-
ception to Cocoa's Rick Rivers with 3:42 left
in the half.
The second half was all Cocoa, especially
in the third quarter.
This is where Cocoa's game plan on of-
fense was at its finest, as it used clock con-
trol and a grind-it-out set of runs from Buie
and Adrian Lee to hold on to the ball for
more than nine minutes in the third.

of short-wearing carolers may not protest,
children are usually relegated to their fill of
snow from the many television specials this
time of year.
It shouldn't be that way, ACFC members
believe.
According to Ms. Holcomb, the event has
carried over into this year, with the group
having met its fundraising goal. Having 25
tons of snow delivered is apparently not an
inexpensive proposition by any means. The
president of the group said that fundraising
efforts will continue and members hope
to have enough funding to have 40 tons of
snow delivered, rather than the 25. A ma-
chine will blow snow into the sky and, at
least for that moment, Clewiston will have
its Christmas.
Parents and children should expect a fun-
filled afternoon.
Festivities start at 5:30 p.m. Civic Park,
right next to the Clewiston Inn.
According to Ms. Holcomb, guests can
expect to play in a bounce house, slide,
take part in hay rides and even get to meet
Santa and take a picture with him. Vendors
will also be keeping all gourmands satisfied,
with plenty of food to choose from.
"It's going to be a lot of fun," said Ms.
Holcomb.
Everything but the food will be free, or-
ganizers said.
That is in no small part thanks to the
many donations that have kept the organiza-
tion going.
"All of this has been through dona-
tions," said Ms. Holcomb, thanking the city
of Clewiston itself for lending a hand with
decorations throughout the park.
The group meets on a monthly basis,
but during the holidays they meet more fre-
quently to make sure that everything is in
order for the Winter Wonderland event, as
well as a toy give-away program.
Last year, the group identified 68 local
families to receive toys for the holidays. They
have already outdone themselves this year,
and have 130-plus names of families that
will be given toys. Some of them will also
receive food baskets.
If you would like to know more about the
festival, or ACFC, or would like to donate,
please contact Sharon at 863-254-7155, or

dren.com.

Ultimately, Glades Central's offense was
put on ice, as they were only on the field for
three possessions in the second half two of
which were in the fourth quarter.
Buie's second touchdown, a 37-yard run
with 4:49 left in the game, effectively sealed
Cocoa's state championship win.
"Cocoa deserved to win," said Glades
Central linebacker Jamorris Rowley, who
registered six tackles one for a loss in the
game.
"They were just a better team tonight,"
Rowley said of the Saturday, Dec. 12 night
game. "Our defense had so many opportuni-
ties to stop them, but we just didn't execute.
We were clicking at first, but we got down
when they [Cocoa] scored on L.J.'s first in-
terception. We never recovered from that."
Cocoa, which won its second consecutive
state title they won last year's Class 3A state
championship in a 7-6 overtime win over

Godby (Tallahassee) came into this game
as a two-touchdown underdog in some me-
dia circles, three or more in others.
"We like to be underdogs," Younger said
of Cocoa. "We like it when it's us against
the world. I always thought we were going
to win this game. Glades Central's receivers
had some great hands, speed and catches,
but our defense came out prepared for
them."
Hester on Glades Central's loss to Co-
coa:
"I'm a little taken aback by the perfor-
mance," he said. "It just didn't happen for us
in all phases of the game. We weren't able
to do anything on a consistent basis and we
couldn't even stop the run; It was just ugly
out there."
Notes: Cocoa, which came into the
game as the Beef O' Brady's No. 7 team,
finished their season with an undefeated re-
cord at 14-0.
Glades Central, the state's Beef O' Bra-
dy's No. 2 team before this game, finished
the season with a 13-1 overall record.

INI/Naji Tobias
Glades Central Raiders fans, in the thousands, came out in full force to show
support for their high school football team. Approximately 7,400 people report-
edly showed up for the Class 2A state title game, held on Dec. 12 at the Citrus
Bowl in Orlando.

Dealing with summer sickness and abandoned forts

Mosquito borne illnesses
and disease deal deadly
blow to Florida pioneers
By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum
A calm before the storm prevailed as
weary soldiers clothed themselves in a
dark cloak of smoke that billowed from the
campfires pine logs.
In the surrounding twilight, a distant hum
quickly grew to a high pitch buzz as clouds
of mosquitoes descended upon the smoke
shrouded soldiers with a vengeance.
"Ole" timers used to say that mosquitoes
were once so numerous you could swing a
quart jar in the air and capture a gallon.
As an ole Glades boy, I can relate to such
folklore.

I remember home window screens
completely covered in a solid, gray mass of
squirming mosquitoes, each trying to make
an unlawful entry.
Some always found a way into our home
and serenaded us with their female charms
for the rest of the night.
The deadliest threat to American soldiers
during the Second Seminole War was the
"summer sickness," a term the military used
to define the summer illnesses and deaths
that plagued the soldiers in Florida.
Much of this sickness was related to the
pesky, female mosquitoes, which some-
times carried the malaria infection.
The summer sickness brought so much
illness to garrisoned troops that many of the
forts were abandoned in the summer time.
The deaths incurred by the summer sick-
ness and other diseases, far outweighed
Seminole bullets.

I-_ WEIGHTOSS

The known deaths during the Second
Seminole Indian War (volunteer militia
deaths not included) were 1,466 Army and
69 Navy. Army and Navy casualties by Semi-
nole bullets were 328. The remaining 1, 207
casualties were from summer sickness and
other causes.
It is time to "Take a Walk in the Past" and
read about abandoned forts and Governor
Call's ever changing campaign.
Fort King was abandoned by the military
in 1836 because malaria and other diseases
had made so many soldiers unfit for duty.
Fort Drane, located 25 miles to the north-
east of Fort King, was also reeling from the
scourge of summer sickness.
The fort was occupied by 307 soldiers,
and, of those, only 186 were fit for duty. Due
to the critical situation, the fort's doctor re-
quested that Fort Drane be evacuated until
the summer sickness had passed.

Governor Call approved the request and
ordered the fort evacuated.
The evacuation of Fort Drane was tem-
porarily postponed when twenty two wag-
ons of stores, escorted by 62 men, left Fort
Drane for Fort Defiance and was attacked.
Osceola, with a reported 150 to 200 Semi-
noles, ambushed the 500 yard long column
of men and wagons, as the column neared
Fort Defiance.
The soldiers were outnumbered and
hard pressed by the Seminoles. The column
was saved when soldiers from nearby Fort
Defiance intervened and helped beat off the
Seminole attack.
Fort Drane was evacuated on Aug. 7,
1836. The Seminoles later burnt the fort to
the ground.

History
Continued From Page 5

Drane left much of Florida's interior unpro-
tected.
The only remaining safe havens in Flor-
ida's interior for white settlers were Newn-
ansville, Garey's Ferry, and Micanopy. White
settlers, who had once felt safe under the
Army fort's protectorate umbrellas, now
left their remote farms to live in the safe ha-
vens.
The overcrowded havens, in turn, be-
came breeding depots for diseases and the
ultimate stalker of man, death.
Measles and diarrhea killed 52 civilians at
Garey's Ferry, while other havens fared no
better as the summer sickness continued
unabated.
On July 24, 1836, Lieutenant Colonel
Crane took charge of northeastern Florida.
The boundaries of his command extend-
ed south to Micanopy, where the stockade,
Fort Defiance was located.
The summer sickness had the fort under
a deadly siege, so on Aug. 15, 1836, Colonel
Crane ordered Major Pierce to evacuate the
fort.
Major Pierce left St. Augustine with 27
wagons and 125 men to close out Fort Defi-
ance and carry the stores and sick back to
St. Augustine.
Pierce stopped over at Micanopy and
learned that Fort Defiance had 147 soldiers
on the sick list.
He also received information that the wily
Seminoles had occupied the area around the
nearby abandoned Fort Drane.
Major Pierce couldn't resist the opportu-
nity to launch a surprise attack on the Semi-
noles.
He took many of the draft horses used for
pulling the wagons and 110 foot soldiers, to
create a make shift Calvary.
It was said that many of the inexperi-
enced men charged the surprised Seminoles
at Fort Drane, while hanging on for dear life
to the manes of the horses.
A short skirmish was fought, until the
Seminoles gathered their wits and took a
stand in an adjoining hammock.
There, the surprised Seminoles regrouped

and started returning heavy fire. Major Pierce
not knowing the enemy's strength withdrew
back to Micanopy.
His losses were one dead and sixteen
wounded.
On Aug. 24, 1836, Major Pierce evacuated
Fort. Defiance. The evacuation of Fort Defi-
ance now left the territories west of the St.
Johns River and south of Newnanville (close
to Alachua) abandoned to the Seminoles.
Governor Call wasn't aware that Colonel
Crane had ordered Major Pierce to evacuate
Fort Defiance and was furious when word
reached him that the fort had been aban-
doned.
There were now three abandoned forts
in the Florida wilderness.
The abandoned forts sent a message of
despair to the local settlers, but a ray of hope
to the Seminoles, who interpreted the aban-
doned forts as a sign of victory.
The abandoned forts strengthened the
Seminoles resolve and their hopes that
the Americans were becoming weary and
would withdraw, leaving the Seminoles to
live unmolested
Fort King had once been the original stag-
ing point in Governor Call's plans to invade
the Seminole's stronghold at Withlacoochee
Cove, but like a rubber ball, his plans had
bounced from pillar to post as each fort was
abandoned.
Fort King, Fort Drane and Fort Defiance
fell to the summer sickness, leaving a frus-
trated Governor Call with no forts and a
need for new plans.

sil display of prehistoric animals that once

ton, sugar cane harvesting, and the orange
industry.

Thanks everyone for being here for me
Why sad face and tears brought here
Don't you know the Lord has set me free?
A lot of things I left undone
But the Lord said to come
A special place He brought me to
And here Ill wait for you
He looked down from Heaven's Gate
And Lo Behold, it was too late
He said Son you have a place
Full of love, happiness and grace
Your love ones, I know will grieve
But your place is here with me
A song to sing a praise to say
But I promise you that some day
They will come thru Heaven's door
And their grieve will be no more
So Child of Mine, We welcome Thee
To remain in Heaven for eternity
Poem written by Grandmother Esther Ramos
Erik,
There is not a moment that goes by that I don't
think of you. I still struggle to try and understand
why you had to leave us. But know that you will
always live in our hearts and mind. We love you
and miss you terribly.

Small Towns
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
In a country where bigger is usually con-
sidered better, more than 100,000 small town
residents have voted to have theirs crowned
the "Coolest Small Town in America."
The poll was conducted by Budget Travel
magazine.
The editor shared the magazine was look-
ing for Main Street, U.S.A. -- places where
you find real people, excited to be part of
their communities.
As for what makes a town "cool," is
very subjective, but there is one really good
marker: When people leave for the big city,
they realize they've made a mistake and
come back home
Small towns are just a little bit different.
The nice part about living in a small town
is that when you don't know what you're
doing, someone else does.
As someone has written, "You know you
live in a small town when
1) You can name everyone you gradu-
ated with.
2) You know what 4-H means.
3) You went to parties at a pasture, barn,
gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. On
Monday you could always tell who was at
the party because of the scratches on their
legs from running through the woods when
the party was busted.
4) You used to "drag" Main.
5) You said the "F" word and your par-
ents knew within the hour.
6) You give directions by references rath-
er than street names. Turn by the old Kelly
house, go two blocks to Anderson's, and it's
four houses left of the track field.
7) You could never buy cigarettes be-
cause all the store clerks knew how old you
were (and if you were old enough, they'd
tell your parents anyhow).
8) Your teachers called you by your older
siblings' names.
9) Your teachers remembered when they
taught your parents.
10) Someone asks you how you feel, and
actually listens to what you say.
Jesus was born in a small town.
Each year we sing Phillip Brooks' beauti-
ful hymn, "O little town of Bethlehem, how

still we see thee lie. Above thy deep and
dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by. Yet in
thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light.
The hopes and fears of all the years are met
in thee tonight."
Bethlehem today is a city of approximate-
ly 50,000 people, but when Jesus was born it
was a tiny village.
The message of Christmas would be
just as powerful if Christ had been born in
a great metropolis, but somehow this tiny
village seems to capture the essence of the
Christ event.
Bethlehem reminds us that God can use
ordinary people and ordinary places in an
extraordinary way.
God can use us.

Just suppose!
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
Suppose a man arrived in our commu-
nity and began preaching.
Suppose He had not been officially called
to the pulpit of the recognized and respect-
able churches of the area, but preached any-
way.
Suppose, further, that it was a known fact
that this person worked 15 or more years at
manual labor before getting the notion to
preach.
Now suppose large crowds began,
strangely, to attend his very informal preach-
ing service.
Suppose this man preached in a very
inliterary way, talked about the daily work,
flowers, fishing --things like that--as much as
Bible.
Suppose He were seen often in bars and
taverns, talking friendly with folk there. Sup-
pose 2 or 3 very unsavory political "hangers
on" should take up with Him and piously an-
nounce that they were "reformed."
Even heard by grapevine that He was
very sympathetic with prostitutes and some
of them almost seemed to worship Him in
public!
Suppose that the most intelligent, best
educated leaders in our community con-
demned this fellow as a very irreligious and
dangerous demagogue.
Suppose one morning you read in the
papers that Government agents had appre-

ended Him as a subversive, brought Him
to trial on a charge of treason.
Suppose further, that the religious leaders
testified against Him at His trial.
AND NONE OF HIS many so-called
friends even raised a whisper in his defense.
Suppose even His alleged lieutenants and
close associates were not willing to be seen
with Him or admit they even knew Him.
And so He is condemned to death and
is executed amid almost universal acclaim.
What would you think of such an individual.
From an earthly and rather analytical, secu-
lar viewpoint, this might be the story of Je-
sus, prior to His resurrection.
But this is the stone that Daniel saw cut
out of the mountain and came rolling down
and tearing down the kingdoms of this
world.
He is indeed King of Kings and Lord of
Lords and He shall reign forever and ever.
Amen!

Advent: Old testament style
and a reason to hope for
today
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D. +
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
When I was in seminary, I worked on
weekends in a Church not too far from Lake
Michigan.
The winters were cold and the wind off
of the lake added to the chilly nights waiting
for the train to take me back to school.
Many times the train was late.
People would leave the station for their
homes and give up, or talk about driving to
their destinations rather than waiting on the
cold platform.
The railroad was reliable even if the train
was delayed.
I knew if I waited, the train would come
-and it always did!
Up in the distance, there would be faint
spot of light, then a distinct headlight that
made the night a bit warmer even if the tem-
perature hadn't changed.
The train would always come, even if we
couldn't rely on the schedule. Sometimes
there would have been an accident or the
conductor would tell us about having to

have the tracks plowed; but it was always
on the way.
I thought about those train trips and times
spent waiting.
Traffic accidents can block a highway,
people will react with frustration, or turn
around or get onto a side road -or wait.
The road will eventually be cleared and
the planned route will be fulfilled.
I ran out of funds while in college; my de-
gree was delayed.
It meant that I would have to work and
then go back to school, but graduation
would come.
It did.
I've come to reflect that most things will
happen if we stick with them; and are pa-
tient.
It's a lesson that is easier in hindsight than
foresight; but a lesson worth remembering.
This is the season of Advent in the Church
calendar year for many Christians. It is a time
of "getting ready" for Christmas -there are
a few days left now and making the best
use of the time we know will be coming
very soon.
Unlike those moments of waiting with-
out knowing when the moment will arrive;
we now live on the other side of the First
Coming of the Lord.
The lessons of the Old Testament in Isa-
iah, the message of John the Baptist, the pre-
lude to the Christmas Story are all about a
people who lived in waiting.
They believed that the blessings of God
sending His Son were on the way; it was
about being patient and faithful in the mean-
time.
Not knowing in one sense, yes, but
knowing it would come to pass and the
world would be a better place because of
His coming; the faithful lived for a long time
in an "advent."
Now, we who are blessed by knowing
the Lord has come have a few days to get
ready to celebrate.
It is a different Advent -the time has
been worth the wait and the faith has been
rewarded.
"Joy to the World, the Lord has come..."
is the message; our message when we wait
in hope and use the time to be faithful.

20 Clewiston News Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee December 17, 2009
I.------------------------------------------------*1

Port
Continued From Page 1

and the prospect that the lynchpin which
held it all together for so many years -- U.S.
Sugar -- may close its doors.
In a meeting that will be closely watched
today, the members of the Port of Palm
Beach are expected make a final decision
on where the port will be located; a deci-
sion that has seen local leaders holding their
breaths in anticipation.
The item is listed on the Port of Palm
Beach's agenda as "G-1 Intermodal Logis-
tics Center Site Selection" a rather indiffer
ent description for an item that many locals
are hoping will provide a glimmer of future
hope.
If the decision were given to the luck of
the draw, then Clewiston finds itself in the
enviable position of having two nearby sites
in the running -- the other sites are located
in South Bay and just west of Port St. Lucie.
But while there are arguments to be made in
placing the inland port in the county which
has the most to lose from U.S. Sugar's even-
tual withdrawal, there has been a concen-
trated push in Palm Beach County to identify

the South Bay location as the best site for the
concept. The Florida Crystals site in South
Bay, owned by the Fanjul family, has been
targeted by environmentalists for having the
potential of throwing a wrench into restora-
tion plans. Just as it seems the state is on
track for advancing its ecological goals, the
thought of a sprawling commercial hub is a
singularly unattractive idea, they say.
Of course, with unemployment rates in
some of the western communities of Palm
Beach at 40 percent, a case can be made for
the economics of siding with the South Bay
location, too.
The port has come under some fire
throughout the state, including by state
agencies and neighboring ports, for going
forward with a plan that has not addressed
all of their questions. Chief among them:
Why build an inland port at all?
The Department of Community Affairs
has responded to the plan by questioning
how much the inland port can expect to
capture from future trade from Asia. With
the 2014 anticipated expansion of the Pana-
ma Canal, Palm Beach port officials believe
that the inland port would be poised to ben-
efit from the increased commercial activity,
but DCA officials remain skeptical.
The Florida Department of Transporta-

tion has also weighed in, saying that more
study was needed to determine where the
port should be located, and, again, whether
it is necessary.
Any inland port should work closely with
Port Everglades in Broward County and Port
of Miami, but even these associations are
quickly fleeting. Port Everglades has taken
aim at the project, citing the opinion that
concrete plans have yet to be presented. The
Port of Miami, publications have reported,
has begun looking at its creating its own ex-
panded rail distribution center in Hialeah.
Though not implicitly stated, some of
the agencies might burden themselves with
worrying why the project should be decided
solely by an agency that might favor local
sites, with the danger that other potentially
viable locations might be scrapped alto-
gether.
Through it all, the Port of Palm Beach has
urged everyone to remain patient; that each
of the four locations was expected to pro-
duce business plans that would quell most
of the concerns.
A cacophony of agencies, interests and
voices continues sounding.
The meeting, in Riviera Beach, will begin
at 4 p.m.
