Glades Central and Glades Day move on to state

Both Glades teams
manhandle their state
semifinal opponents

By Naji Tobias
INI Florida
BELLE GLADE Unfinished business.
That's what Glades Central Raiders de-
fensive coordinator reminded the team after
thumping Robinson (Tampa), 33-0, in the
Class 2A state semifinal game.
With the victory, Glades Central moved
on to the Class 2A state championship game
- something not accomplished since 2006,
when the Raiders won their sixth state title
in a 39-27 comeback win over Pine Forest
(Pensacola). Glades Central, who will be
playing for the Class 2A title on Saturday
(Dec. 12) at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, will
be facing off against fellow Class 2A power-
house Cocoa, who won last year's Class 3A
state championship in a 7-6 overtime nail-
biter over Godby. Glades Central and Cocoa
were in Class 3A for the past few seasons be-
fore moving down a classification this year.
In what proved to be a thoroughly domi-
nating game by the Raiders on both sides of
the ball not seen since its 34-0 homecom-
ing win over Class 1B powerhouse Jupiter
Christian two months ago it was nothing
but highlights for this week's Beef O' Brady's
No. 2 all-classification team in the state.
L.J. Thomas, arguably the best quar-

INI/Naji Tobias
Glades Central's Antwon Chisolm (11 carries, 108 yards, 1 TD) powered the
running attack in a 33-0 Class 2A state semifinal win over Robinson (Tampa) on
Friday, Dec. 4. Chisolm's first run, shown here, was an 11-yard scramble that
directly led to Glades Central's first score of the game.

terback in Palm Beach County for the last
two years, led Glades Central's lethally po-
tent passing attack with three touchdown
throws, to go along with 218 yards, as he
went 11-for-18 in the win. It took only three
plays, spanning an astonishing 49 seconds,
for Glades Central (13-0) to put up a 6-0 lead
on the completely overmatched Knights
team. After Thomas's 45-yard strike to Kevin
Benjamin (three catches, 88 yards) and an
11-yard run by Antwon Chisolm (11 carries,
108 yards, 1 TD), Greg Dent, who's hands-
down the best overall athlete in the Muck,
hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass to give
Glades Central the lead.

Glades Central, this week's Rivals100 No.
13 team in the nation, didn't score again un-
til rising star playmaker Demetrius 'Bay-Bay'
Evans snagged his only catch of the game, a
12-yard pass from Thomas with 6:36 left in
the first half.
But the scoring drought, which lasted for
more than a quarter, did not matter in any
way, as the Raiders vaunted defense took
over. Robinson (10-3 after the season end-
ing loss) had just one opportunity to make
this a competitive game, as the Knights used
clock control to march down to the Raiders
10-yard line in the first quarter.
Glades Central's red zone defense was

masterful in that Dent scooped up a Robin-
son fumble on first-gnd-goal, forced by the
Raiders defensive line. Robinson quarter-
back Blake Rice (9-for-22 passing, 81 yards,
1 INT) was sacked a whopping 15 times in
this game, five of which came from Raid-
ers junior defensive end Robert Way. Way,
who set a Glades Central record with 24 total
sacks for the season, was supported heav-
ily by fellow defensive end Everon Morgan,
who had his best game of the season with
11 tackles and four sacks.
Delbert Clarke, Isiah Corbett and Michael
Smith each added the astonishing team sack
total with two apiece.
And Chisolm, who has had an up-and-
down season at running back, sliced his way
through the Robinson defense, as he added
a touchdown, a 33-yard run in the third
quarter to give the Raiders a commanding
26-0 lead.
"We just came out in practice and were
focused all week," said Raiders linebacker
Jamorris Rowley. "Half of us never went to
state, so that's all we wanted to do from the
beginning of the season."
Rowley, sounding like he was both happy
and relieved of Glades Central's accomplish-
ment their eighth overall state champion-
ship appearance reminisced on how it felt
last year to fall short of a state title.
Last season, Glades Central, without
Thomas, who suffered a season-ending col-
larbone injury in last year's Muck Bowl, lost

to Monsignor Pace (Miami) 13-6 in the sec-
ond round of the Class 3A playoffs.
"We didn't want to have the same feeling
from last year, when we lost to [Monsignor]
Pace," Rowley said. "Last year, we took that
team lightly because we knew we were bet-
ter than them. But they came out to play."
As for the advice Rowley and his team-
mates received in how to overcome last
year's stinging loss?
"Coach Randy Williams, our running
backs coach, told me, 'You ain't gonna have
that feeling no more, just work hard and ev-
erything will work itself out,'" Rowley said.
"If we play together as a team, there's no
one in the state that can beat us. I want all
the seniors, my homeboys to go out with
a ring. I want nothing more than that for
them."
Thomas, who was bothered by some

rumored trash-talking from the Robinson
(Tampa) quarterback earlier last week, cred-
ited his offensive line for the big win.
"The O-line told me to do what I do and
if I did what I was supposed to do, they
were gonna hold me down," Thomas said.
"Eric Lewis [a Glades Central player] moti-
vated me the whole week after I was told
that the Tampa Robinson quarterback was
better than me. There ain't another No. 8 in
this state like me. Tampa Robinson's quar-
terback did basically nothing. I gotta tell my
O- (offensive) and D- (defensive) lines that I
love them."
Notes: Dent (five catches, 90 yards)
scored his other touchdown in the first half
- a 9-yard pass from Thomas with :54.6 left
in the first half to give the Raiders a 19-0 half-
time lead. Raiders senior strong safety Tra-
vis Bell caught an interception in the fourth
quarter, giving him a team-high 10 for the
season after 13 games.
Backup quarterback Alanda 'A.J.' Shaw
threw a touchdown to Jamie Wilson in the
fourth to complete the game's scoring.

Glades Central and Cocoa, both unde-
feated at 13-0, were the top two teams in
Class 2A this entire season, according to the
Associated Press High School Football poll.
If Glades Central takes home this year's
Class 2A state title on Saturday they are
favored to win their next game it will be
the school's seventh state title. That would
place them second all-time to Class 2B pow-
er Bolles (Jacksonville), who is going for
its 10th state championship in the Class 2B
title game on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.)
against Tampa Catholic. The Class 2A state
championship game is scheduled for a 7
p.m. kickoff at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
Glades Day 48, Out-of-Door Acad-
emy (Sarasota) 20: Kelvin Taylor, the son
of New England Patriots running back Fred
Taylor, muscled his way to five touchdowns
for 358 yards on 46 carries in the Gators
Class 1B state semifinal win. Roshard Bur-
ney, Glades Day's backup running back,
added two second half rushing scores to
seal the victory. Burney, who had 54 yards
on six carries, scored on runs on 16 and 22

yards, respectively, to give Glades Day (11-2)
the game. Interestingly, this game was close
for much of the contest, with Out-of-Door
Academy taking an early 7-0 lead and tied it
up at 14 apiece after Taylor's first two touch-
down runs in the first frame.
Out-of-Door's A.J. Strong (27 carries, 103
yards) scored on an 11-yard touchdown run
in the second quarter to make the game
as close it was going to get for the District
6-Class 1B champion.
Glades Day, who last won a state title in
2006, is the odds-on favorite to beat Warner
Christian (South Daytona Beach) in tomor-
row's Class 1B state championship game.
Warner Christian lost last year's Class 1B
title game to two-time state champion Jupi-
ter Christian. Glades Day, who has made the
most state championship appearances in
FHSAA history with 23, can win its sixth title
on Friday (Dec. 11).
The Class 1B state title game is scheduled
for a 1 p.m. kickoff tomorrow at the Citrus
Bowl in Orlando.

A Walk in the Past: The

By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum
General Winfield Scott, commander of all
military operations in the Florida Theater, re-
tired from his post after diligently defending
his unsuccessful military campaigns against
the Seminoles. He was later reassigned a
post in Alabama.
Florida Governor, Richard K. Call, a critic
of General Scott's campaigns, wrote Presi-
dent Andrew a letter, boldly asking for the
command following General Scott's retire-
ment.
In his letter to President Jackson, Gover-
nor Call proposed using the Withlacoochee
River as a supply line because the river
ran within twenty miles of the Seminole's
thatched citadels
Governor Call's letter entailed a plan to
feint an attack on the Indian villages using
horsemen, while Infantry and supplies were
moved upriver at night within striking dis-
tance of the villages.
The Calvary would attack and act as a
decoy, drawing the Seminoles toward them.
This frontal action would leave the rear flank
vulnerable to the Infantry.
Call believed the combined forces could
then crush the Seminoles, forcing them to
sue for peace.
President Jackson liked the plan, and
he liked Governor Call, who was an old
acquaintance. Governor Call had served
under Jackson in the Creek War and sup-
ported him in Washington, when Jackson's
invasion of Spanish Florida (1818-1819) was
under investigation. Their political careers in
Washington had also overlapped, reinforc-
ing a firm friendship.
President Jackson encouraged Secretary
of War, Cass, to place Governor Call in com-
mand of the Florida forces, including the
United States Army.
On June 21, 1836, Governor Call received
word from Cass that he was the newly elect-
ed Field Commander of both Federal (Army
regulars) and Militia (volunteers) troops in
Florida.
The Army personnel stationed in Florida
wasn't happy with Secretary of War, Cass's
decision. They were insulted that Florida
Governor Call, who carried the rank of
colonel in the lowly Florida Militia, now out-
ranked and commanded them.
The Navy, which operated independent
of the Army, had made it a point during the
Second Seminole War, not to let ground
officers in the Army take liberties with the
Navy's operations. Governor Call would be
no exception.
Commodore Alexander Dallas, com-
mander of naval operations in Florida, wrote
Governor Call a taunting letter to express his
displeasure, "I beg that your suggestions
may have less the character of an order than
those heretofore received."
Governor Call's new position had indeed
stirred dissention in the ranks of the Army
and Navy. It had also encouraged an old
hostility, which had existed since the War of
Independence. Army regulars didn't like en-
listed volunteers and the enlisted volunteers
didn't care for Army regulars.
The popular movie, "Patriot" shows much
of the contempt a disciplined army had for

volunteer militiamen. Davy Crockett, an en-
listed scout in the Creek Wars, expressed his
unhappiness with Army regulars, when he
reported a hostile Creek village and was ig-
nored, until an Army scout reported in with
the same information, which then prompted
the Army to take action.
The total number of Army regulars in
Florida consisted of only 1,000 soldiers, so
Governor Call would need many enlisted
volunteers, if he was to implement the plan
he so boldly presented to President Jackson.
Governor Call must also bring the volunteer
militiamen and Army regulars together as a
fighting team, if he was to successfully ex-
ecute his plan.
Recruiting the volunteers was another
challenge that Governor Call hadn't foreseen.
Creek Indians still living in Georgia and Ala-
bama were encouraged by the Seminole's
resistance and had taken to the warpath.
Most of the volunteers that had fought in
Florida came from Georgia and Alabama.
Now those volunteers were needed at home
to battle the Creeks.
A call for volunteers went beyond the
borders of Alabama and Georgia. Tennessee,
the volunteer state, responded and promised
to send 1,500 volunteers in June, 1836. The
volunteers were held up in Alabama, fight-
ing Creeks and arrived late in Florida, which
set Governor Calls plan back further.
The arrival of the Tennessee Volunteers
still left Governor Call short on troops, so he
went to an unlikely source, Creek and Semi-
nole Indians.
Most of the Seminoles living on the
smaller Apalachicola River reservations had
remained friendly to the whites even though
they were going to be shipped to the west-
ern Indian territories.
Call recruited 75 Seminoles as guides and
a 1,000 friendly Creeks.
The recruiting problem was now re-
solved, but other military related problems
continued to frustrate Governor Call. A tiny
bug that we in the Glades are all familiar
with, "the mosquito" was carrying on a war
of its own against the American soldiers.
Summertime was called the "sickly sea-
son" and for good reason because the mos-
quito was spreading an unknown disease
among the troops that we know today as
malaria.
Many of the American troops became
sick, including Governor Call. In the sum-
mer of 1836, six companies (roughly 300
men) were stationed at Fort King and only
166 were considered fit for duty.
The sick troops created a domino effect
that seriously affected Governor Call's sched-
uled plan. Shortage of troops and the sickly
season made it difficult to command and re-
supply Fort King, so the fort was evacuated
between May and June.
Fort King was the closest fort to the Semi-
nole's stronghold at the Withlacoochee Cove
and strategic to the success of Governor
Call's plans, which entailed massing Calvary
and Infantry at the fort, prior to launching a
blitzkrieg on the Seminole Nation.
Governor Call was forced to alter his
plans and chose Fort Drane as the staging
point for his invasion because it was now
the closest fort to the Withlacoochee Cove.
The fort was located approximately 25

Mosquitoes
miles east of Fort ing, in a swampy terrain.
The blood thirsty mosquitoes were crit-
ters of opportunity that saw the soldiers as
dinner fare, so Fort Drane, like Fort King
came under siege by swarms of irritating,
but deadly, malaria infected mosquitoes.
In the summer of 1836, there were 307
men posted at Fort Drane, but only 186 were
fit for duty. Constant Indian attacks, summer
heat and mosquitoes were making the sol-
dier's lives at the isolated fort a hellhole.
It wasn't Seminole bullets, but the re-
lentless malaria infected mosquitoes that
carried death and sickness to the troops at
Fort Drane. Fort Drane's commander, Major
Julies Heilman, died from the disease as the
death toll continued to rise at the fort.
The morale of the men stationed at Fort
Drane hit an all time low, as did Lieutenant
Wheelock, who committed suicide there.
The army surgeon stationed at Fort Drane
requested the Fort be evacuated due to the
serious illnesses.
Governor Call had planned to take the
field against the Seminoles in August, but
now his plan was being altered once again
by the mosquitoes.
I hope you have enjoyed this story. Please
contact the Clewiston Museum if you have
questions, artifacts, pictures, or a "Whale
of a Tale" that you would like to share. The
Museum's hours are Monday through Friday
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The museum provides an interesting fos-
sil display of prehistoric animals that once
roamed the Glades thousands of years ago
and artifacts that reflect the heritage of
Clewiston.
Its theater has a 65-seat capacity and pres-
ents movies on the history of Clewiston, sug-
ar cane harvesting, and the orange industry.
Stop by and enjoy a 45- minute group-tour
for only $2.00 per person.

RAK Club visits Panda House
Students from Clewiston Christian School's Random Acts of Kindness (RAK)
Club collected items for the Panda House in Belle Glade. The Panda House
is a resident program for women who are pregnant and addicted. The home
houses up to 26 women and their children at one time. The RAK Club was
honored to have Marsha Metzger, a volunteer from Panda, attend their meet-
ing and share about the Panda program. Mrs. Metzger fielded many ques-
tions from the students and she encouraged them to make wise choices and
to follow God's plan for their lives.

Dr. Leonard Carroll, a Board-Certified
General Surgeon at Hendry Regional Medi-
cal Center, has been elected to membership
in the Society of American Gastrointestinal
and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Founded in 1981, SAGES fosters, pro-
motes, supports and encourages academic,
clinical and research achievement in gastro-
intestinal endoscopic surgery.
Its members consist of general surgeons
such as Dr. Carroll, along with colorectal
surgeons and osteopathic surgeons, who
perform endoscopy and laparoscopy as part
of their practice.
SAGES offers a worldwide forum for
discussion of interventional endoscopy as-
pects, as it relates to the integral elements of
surgical practice.
A recent conference that Dr. Carroll at-
tended afforded him, along with the inter-
national surgical community, a focal point
for the exchange of information on practice,
theory, and research in various medical and
surgical disciplines.
Dr. Carroll has been practicing surgery in
Clewiston since February 2007.
Since that time, he has performed hun-
dreds of operations, a vast majority of them
being colonoscopy, gastrointestinal, and en-
doscopic procedures.

Getting ready for Christmas -
The race to be run
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D.+
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
My calendar and the tempo of life tells
me that we're in the "home stretch" now-
Christmas is nearly here and soon another
year will begin. Perhaps in another sense,
we are in the "home stretch" in many things;
maybe the recession is coming to an end,
maybe the things we hear about the ends
of our overseas wars are coming into view,
maybe the job situation is beginning to turn
around at least in some industries. Is the
end in sight; are we in the "home stretch?"
Who can say for sure? One thing for certain,
we are now well underway for Christmas.
When thinking about this "race" I was re-
minded of the words of Saint Paul; "Do you
not know that in a race, all the runners run,
but only one gets the prize? (1 Corinthians
9:24)." Everybody is in the final stages of get-
ting ready for the holidays, but who gets the
prize? Paul tells the faithful "Run in such a
way as to get the prize ibidd)." If you're pre-
paring for something -then get ready for it!
Don't leave all of the details for the last mo-
ment, and don't forget your priorities. Don't
ignore shopping early when things will still
be available, plan your trips and think about
each person on your list of special people
to remember. Is the gift to be given some-
thing that reflects some thought and under-
standing or is it something more "generic"
and says "I don't know you too well, but
want to remember you at this special time
anyway!" Run the Christmas race so that
you will receive the prize of a very special
and personal holiday for all you are going to
make a part of it. By the way; is Christmas
to be another year-end event or will getting
ready for Christmas really include what it's
all about? Is home going to reflect the place
for the coming of the King of Kings; or are
the decorations going to reflect the commer-
cial themes so often heard at this time? Take
a minute and decide. Is there some prepa-
ration that needs to be done before a reli-
gious celebration or is Church attendance
just another part of the "Christmas thing?"
What does it mean to run the race for Christ-
mas if we are to receive the prize? I think
it means that we get ready, each step along
the way is toward the goal, we focus on the
real reason for the race and pace ourselves,
we start with the final goal and real reason
in mind. The reason for Christmas is to cel-
ebrate the coming of the Lord among us;
the messages of joy, peace on earth, good
will toward others, hope, the gift of faith in
its final form, the promise of the message of
salvation is for each and every one of us, all
of the great things -that's what Christmas
is finally about. That's why we run the race;
that's the reason for the season!

Christmas-Time Frazzles!
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
Many are getting the Christmas-Time
Frazzles. This is caused by the old shop-
ping routine, running from store to store,
elbowing your way through the crowd to
try to please people with presents bought
with money you don't have. Here are other
sources of these frazzles:
Children begging for every gift on TV Try-
ing to figure out how to see all the relatives
on Christmas, and please them. Preparing
and baking a Christmas dinner for 30 peo-
ple. The mess in the kitchen after baking

Christmas dinner. Getting the house cleaned
for guests. The men sitting in front of the TV
football game while the children run wild.
Wrapping odd-shaped gifts. Getting your
Sunday School children to remember their
Christmas program parts.
Here are some suggestions for relieving
the "Christmas-time Frazzles".
1.Figure out how much money you have
to spend on Christmas giving before you
plan what to give. Then set a ceiling on the
amount you will spend for each individual.
2.Make a list of all the people you want
to give to because you've always done it and
are expected to. After that, add to you list the
name of at least one person to whom you
can give who is not able to give you some-
thing in return (if you feel they might try, give
your gift anonymously.)
3.Husbands, help your wife clean the
house, fix dinner, watch the kids, wrap pres-
ents and keep that TV off while relatives are
in. Enjoy their fellowship!
4.Make Christmas a religious celebration
rather than a secular one. It is special to us
who wear the name "Christian"-- a time to
remember. Lead your family to observe the
religious significance of Christmas through
Bible reading, prayer, telling the Christmas
story, or conversations about the true mean-
ing of Christmas.
Follow these suggestions and add some
of your own. Make this Christmas different.

Eliminate the "Christmas-time Frazzles.

Testing our Christmas IQ
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
The countdown to Christmas has begun!
We've heard the stories, we've sung the car-
ols, but how much of the scriptural Christ-
mas story do we really know? Every year I
like to share with those around me a fun test
to help remind us of how much we really
know, and how much of our knowledge is
legend! Here is a sample of this year's Christ-
mas IQ test! See how you do!
(1) As long as Christmas has been cel-
ebrated, it has been on Dec. 25th. (T or F)
(2) Joseph was from: A. Bethlehem B.
Jerusalem C. Nazareth D. Egypt E. Chicago
F. None of the above
(3) How did Joseph and Mary travel to
Bethlehem? A. Joseph walked, Mary rode a
donkey B. Mary walked, Joseph rode a don-
key C. They both walked. D. They both rode.
E. Our church van. F. They flew. G. Who
Knows?
(4) What did the innkeeper tell Mary and
Joseph? A. "Come back after the Christmas
rush and I should have some vacancies." B.
"I have a stable you can use." C. "There is no
room at the inn." D. Both B and C. E. None
of the above.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conserva-
tion Commission (FWC) reminds hunters
that they may continue to take Burmese py-
thons and all other reptiles of concern with-
in four South Florida wildlife management
areas (WMAs).
An FWC executive order, which went into
effect Aug. 29, gives all properly licensed and
permitted hunters authority to harvest py-
thons and other reptiles of concern (Indian
python, reticulated python, northern and
southern African rock python, amethystine
or scrub python, green anaconda and Nile
monitor lizard) on Everglades and Francis
S. Taylor, Holey Land, Rotenberger and Big
Cypress WMAs during specified hunting sea-
sons.
Besides Big Cypress WMA, small-game
seasons are going on in the other three man-
agement areas, continuing through March
7. On Big Cypress, general gun season is in,
immediately followed by the area's small-
game season, which goes through Feb. 1.

In all four WMAs, only a Florida hunting li-
cense and management area permit are re-
quired to hunt reptiles of concern from now
through the end of the small-game seasons.
"Because hunters continue to play a key
role with wildlife conservation in this state,
and since many of them have great local
knowledge and really know the lay of the
land, it just makes good sense to once again
enlist their services in helping us eradicate
these invasive reptiles," said FWC Commis-
sioner Ronald Bergeron.
With the exception of the small-game
season in the Deep Lake Unit of Big Cypress
(where only bows and muzzleloaders are al-
lowed), hunters may use shotguns, rimfire
rifles and handguns to take pythons. Nets
and snares also may be used, but no matter
the method of take, all reptiles of concern
must be euthanized on site.
Reptiles of concern may not be taken
out of the wildlife management areas alive
and must be reported to the FWC within 36

By Bob Wattendorf
Black bass are the most popular recre-
ational fishes in the United States, but do
you know what they are? In the Sunshine
State, black bass include Florida largemouth,
shoal, spotted and Suwannee basses. We
are fortunate to live in a state known as the
Garden of Eden for these fiesty sport fish.
Scientists specializing in fish species will tell
you they aren't real bass at all, but rather
members of the sunfish family that include
crappie and bluegill. But anglers who have
tussled with a Florida largemouth bass will
insist they are the "reel" basses.
In Florida, black bass annually provide
more than 800,000 anglers with nearly 15
million days of healthy outdoor recreation
and generate substantially more than a bil-
lion dollars in economic impact for Florida.
So although the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC) has al-
ways zealously managed these fish to en-
sure their survival and sustainable use, it
is now time to pull together all the loosely
connected pieces into one cohesive man-
agement plan.
Darrell Scovell, director of the Division
of Freshwater Fisheries Management, an-
nounced the framework for such a plan at
the first public meeting of the rapidly evolv-
ing Florida Freshwater Fishing Coalition
(FLFFC.org), in October in Orlando. The
FWC's Black Bass Management Plan will

ultimately provide the blueprint to ensure
Florida's recognition as "The Bass Capital of
the World," according to Scovell. The meet-
ing drew representatives from 17 fishery-
dependent type organizations, businesses
and groups who actively participated in the
discussion and commended the FWC for its
outreach effort.
Tom Champeau, an FWC fisheries expert
and director of the South Region, introduced
the concept at the meeting. He emphasized
that the prominence of our bass fisheries
cannot be taken for granted. Participation
in freshwater fishing has been affected by
societal changes related to urbanization and
changing demographics. Freshwater fishing
license sales have shown an overall decline
since the 1980s, although sales have stabi-
lized over the past 10 years. Development
of land and water resources to support our
current and projected population growth
threatens lake, river and associated wetland
habitats. The uncertain impacts of climate
change on freshwater habitats and bass fish-
ing require investigation and adaptive man-
agement.
To protect our valuable bass fisheries,
the FWC plans to engage more stakehold-
ers through a year-long process to develop a
long-term (2010-2030) management plan for
Florida bass species. This plan will provide
strategies and programs to manage for high
quality fisheries and increase opportunities
for anglers to pursue trophy Florida bass.

mese pythons" in the "Quick Clicks" menu.
However, any reptile of concern taken from
Big Cypress must be checked in at one of
the area's six check stations. Hunters may
do what they wish with the reptile's skin and
meat.
However, according to the National Park
Service, mercury testing on two dozen
captured Burmese pythons in Everglades
National Park revealed extraordinarily high
levels of mercury in the meat well above
levels considered safe to eat in freshwater
fish and alligators. Officials estimate there
are thousands of Burmese pythons in the
wild in South Florida.
The FWC's goal is to contain the spread
of these pythons in the wild and prevent
establishment of other reptiles of concern.
Data collected by hunters on these state-
managed lands will assist in preventing their
northern movement.

management plan
"The FLFFC is ecstatic about being in-
volved at the grass roots level in discussing
Florida's black bass management," said
Todd Kersey, CEO of the FLFFC. "The enthu-
siasm of the participants shows how impor-
tant this is and the desire to see all aspects of
management from aquatic vegetation con-
trol, to habitat enhancement and stocking,
to regulation management and enforcement
included in the plan."
That is just what the FWC biologists
wanted to hear, not only from the FLFFC, but
from all of the nearly 1 million anglers who
enjoy fishing in Florida for black bass. The
plan will include all those aspects and more,
but the final product depends on good, solid
science, knowledge of local fisheries in-
cluding the constraints and opportunities
and what you, the public, want your fisher-
ies resources to be. From creating relaxing,
low-pressure aesthetic fisheries where natu-
ral scenery is the major draw, to fast-action
schooling bass in the small to average size
range, to limited-entry trophy bass fisheries,
FWC biologists are willing to work with lo-
cal communities to design a management
plan that, with adequate funding and public
support, can provide the sustainable fishing
opportunities you want.

Point presentation given at the FLFFC meet-
ing, visit MyFWC.com/Fishing and select

Sheriff's Office encourages "Project Blue Light"

Program recognizes
fallen officers

Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden
and the national organization of Concerns
for Police Survivors respectfully requests that
the citizens of Hendry County show support
for law enforcement officers and families of
officers who have died in the line of duty by
participating in the nationwide Project Blue
Light this holiday season.
In 1988 Mrs. Dolly Craig of Philadelphia,
PA, wrote Concerns of Police Survivors tell-
ing them she was planning on displaying
a single blue light to honor her son-in-law
who died in the line of duty in 1986.
Project Blue Light honors and remem-
bers those law enforcement officers who
have given their lives while serving the law
enforcement profession and thanking those
officers who continue to work America's in-
creasingly dangerous streets each and every

day of the year.
Project Blue Light was de-
veloped by Concerns of Police
Survivors, Inc., a non-profit or-
ganization which represents
more than 15,000 families of
officers who have died in the
line of duty.
Hendry County Sheriff
Steve Whidden stated "we
are asking residents and busi-
nesses to include blue lights
in their holiday decorations,
or place a single blue light in a
window as a way of honoring
our fallen and active officers.
"We are all reminded of

the recent killing of four Lake-
wood Police Officers as they
prepared for their shift. I hope that you will
take time during this Christmas season to re-
member those that have made the ultimate
sacrifice and the families and friends they

What this means is that the current inter-

the safety at the intersection.
While no concrete design plans exist for
the project -- few people at the county level
were aware of the fact that the project had

the news with excitement.
