Seven-member team
to focus on recovery
operations
By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
When they take to the canals,
the seven-member team of the
Clewiston Police Department's
dive team avoids thinking about
alligators.
You see, when you're dealing
with conditions where much of
the water is blacker than coal, and
seeing your own hand beneath it
is considered good visibility, you
tend not to worry yourself with
those things.
"We don't think about it," said
Sgt. Chad Pelham, who leads the
team. "You try not to think about
it and say 'what you can't see,
can't hurt you.' Of course that's
not true."
What is true, however, is that
alligator attacks are very rare, and
the team instead focuses on more
pressing matters like evidence re-
trieval, or, to a lesser extent, being
involved in a rescue effort.
The band operates as a single,
cohesive unit, utilizing the low-
tech method of running a rope to
the divers in the water, from the
officers supervising them on the
high banks of the canals. Certain
tugs on the rope provide the only
communication the team needs.
While the possibility that the
team could take part in a rescue
effort an overturned car in a
canal the chances of that hap-
pening are slim. If it was neces-
sary, and time was on their side,
the dive team would gladly rush
out to participate in rescue and
extraction calls.
For now, they provide an in-
valuable tool, especially to detec-
tives.
With miles upon miles of laby-
rinthine waterways stitching the

Mother and daughter charged in band booster theft
Detectives:
Daughter's attempt to
cash check uncovers
history of fraud

Clewiston News
Tomorrow, the Clewiston Band
Boosters will begin selling Christ-
mas trees as part of its annual
fundraising tradition.
This year, however, the group
will have to work a little bit hard-
er in selling in order to recoup
money detectives say they lost to
a swindle.
Earlier this month, a mother
and daughter faced serious accu-
sations of having fleeced the chari-
table organization through forgery
and deceit. According to a police
report released by the Hendry
County Sheriff's Office, the duo
made off with hundreds of dollars
in fraudulent checks. It wasn't until
a wary bank employee questioned
the checks that officers were able
to solve the case.
In May, 21-year-old Summer
Nicole Curry, the daughter, is said
to have attempted to cash a check
at First Bank of Clewiston, accord-
ing to the report.
The check was signed by Bar-
bara Langford, 43, Curry's mother
and a member of the band boost-
ers, and Graciela Luna, the band
booster president.
The bank manager noticed that
the signature did not belong to
Ms. Luna and refused to cash the
check, finding out later that the
same check was later cashed in
one of the bank's LaBelle offices.
When approached with the in-
formation, Luna checked the asso-
ciation's account and noticed that
seven additional checks featured
her forged signature. The checks
were made out to Curry, Langford
or Sam's Club and totaled nearly
$2,000. The earliest of the checks
was dated February 2008.
During a band association
meeting, Langford reportedly
explained that her daughter had
stolen three checks, and though
Langford meant to pay them back,
she never did. Langford asked if

Lakeside Medical celebrates first triplets born
Belle Glade, FL -Lakeside Medical Center
has three new reasons to celebrate with the
birth of the hospital's first set of triplets, the
Glades area's first in more than a decade.
Charity Wilson and Necler Legros, both
from Belle Glade, welcomed identical twin
daughters NeKeela and NeKayla Legros, and
a baby boy, Necler Legros IV on Thursday,
October 29. The babies, born at 34 weeks,
weighed 3 lbs, 13 oz., 4 lbs. 2 oz., and 3 lbs.,
14 oz., respectively. All three newborns and
their proud mother are healthy and doing
well. The babies will remain in The Birth-
place at Lakeside Medical Center until they
have gained enough weight to go home.
"The fact that Ms. Wilson went into labor
at 34 weeks is very good," said Dr. Ahmed
Barhoush, a practicing OB/GYN physician
in Belle Glade who delivered the babies.
"Lakeside Medical Center is a beautiful facil-
ity and the veteran nursing and medical staff
did a great job helping to bring these triplets
into the world."
"I still can't believe it," said Ms. Wilson,
who has three other children: seven, three,
and two years old. "They are such a bless-
ing."
Three new babies will mean big changes
for the family. Ms. Wilson, who worked as a
cake decorator, will be a stay-at-home mom
for a while.
According to the most recent Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention's National
Vital Statistics Reports, triplet or higher
births in the U.S. occurred in 153 out of ev-
ery 100,000 births. In 2006, that amounted to
6,118 triplets. The chance of multiple births
can also be an inherited trait. Ms. Wilson's
mother was a twin, and Mr. Legros has a set
of twins in his family.
Ms. Wilson says she found The Birth-
place at Palm Beach County's newest hos-

Tobacco
Free
By Glenda Wilson
On January 1, 2010, Hendry Regional
Medical Center will institute a 'no tobac-
co, smoke-free' policy inside the hospital,
on all its sites and campuses, and on all
associated parking lots.
Currently, employees, medical staff
and visitors must go outside the facilities
to use tobacco products, but as the New
Year begins, tobacco use will be prohib-
ited, both inside and out. Signs will be
posted around the hospital campuses to
alert visitors of the change.
A stop-smoking team, consisting of
hospital employees, began working
months ago to identify and implement
ways to ease the transition for people
who were using tobacco. Craig Cud-
worth, hospital CEO, says, "The new
policy is the right example for healthcare
providers to set for the community. Our
hospital wants to provide an appropriate
healthcare environment."
The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention estimates that each year
nearly one in five U.S. deaths result from
tobacco use, and statistics show that ap-
proximately $150 billion is spent each
year in healthcare for smokers.
For those who want to take this op-
portunity to stop smoking, the hospital is
offering free smoking cessation classes.
Call David Theroux, Cardiopulmonary Di-
rector, at 863-902-3051 for additional in-
formation regarding the class schedules.

A Walk in the Past: A Change in Command
By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum Director
The Second Seminole Indian War (1835-
1842) turned into seven long years, which
tried the patience of our nation's leadership
in Washington and that of the American pub-
lic. The Seminole War also vexed the careers
of several Army Generals that commanded
the armed forces in Florida. Personality con-
flicts, politics and poor military strategies
caused dissention among those chosen to
command in the Florida Theater.
At the beginning of the war, General
Clinch was in command of Eastern Florida,
while General Gaines was in command of
Western Florida. Both Generals were expe-
rienced and able commanders, who had
fought in the pervious First Seminole Indian
War.
General Clinch was a Colonel in the First
Seminole War (1817-1818) under the com-
mand of General Jackson. He directed the
attack on the ill fated Negro Fort (Negro Fort
on the Apalachicola River), which blew up,
when cannon fire from an American gun-
boat hit the fort's powder magazine, kill-
ing most of the men, women and children
within the fort.
As a general and commander of Florida's
Eastern Theater, General Clinch worked dili-
gently with Indian agent Thompson in trying
to persuade the Seminoles to relocate peace-
fully, but to no avail. Most of the Seminoles
refused to leave Florida and finally vented
their anger and frustration on December 28,
1835, when Osceola and other Seminoles
killed Indian Agent Thompson and five other
persons outside Fort King, while fifty miles
away, Seminoles ambushed and decimated
Major Dade's command.
General Clinch retaliated and attempted
to mount a punitive attack against the Semi-
nole's homeland, but was unsuccessful.
The Battle of the Withlacoochee belonged
to neither the Seminoles nor the Americans.
However, the campaign did expose Gen-
eral Clinch's poor decisions and bad tactics,
which could have been disastrous to his
army, save for the intervention of good ole
Lady Luck.
General Clinch's poor results prompted
Washington to place General Scott over the
entire Florida Theater. In response, General
Clinch tendered his resignation to President
Andrew Jackson, who tried to get him to
reconsider. General Clinch refused, and on
September 21, 1836 retired from his military
career. His decision to retire wasn't due to
his lack of success in the Seminole war, but
Washington's decision to put General Scott
in charge. He resigned three months after
General Scott was given the Florida com-
mand.
General Gaines was also angered by
Washington's decision. However, his un-
happiness with General Scott's promotion
went deeper than General Clinch's because
General Gaines had parted ways with Gen-
eral Scott years earlier, due to personal con-
flicts in the Black Hawk Indian War. General
Gaines relations with General Scott would
grow worse in the Seminole War.
In January of 1836, General Gaines re-
ceived news in New Orleans that Major
Dade's force had been attacked and practi-
cally annihilated. He immediately started
preparing his troops to come to the aid of
the beleaguered Fort Brooks (Tampa Bay
area) and Fort King (Ocala area). General
Gaines embarked by ship with 1,100 men
and arrived at Fort Brooke in 1836, where
he then proceeded to Fort King. Due to inad-
equate supplies at Fort King, he was forced
to march back to Fort Brooks. During the
march, he encountered the Seminoles at the
Withlacoochee River and was pinned down
for over a week.
Surrounded and low on supplies, Gen-
eral Gaines sent word to General Clinch at
Fort Drane, requesting reinforcements. Gen-
eral Clinch had earlier received orders from
General Scott to remain at Fort Drane and
was unable to offer assistance to General
Gaines immediately. Humanitarian reasons
eventually won out, forcing General Clinch
to forsake his duties as an officer. He dis-
obeyed General Scott's strict orders and sent
reinforcements to General Gaines.
Afterward, General Gaines marched back
to Fort Drane, where he was forced to share
the sparse accommodations of Fort Drane
for a day with General Scott. John Bemrose,
a medical officer, writes about this meeting,
"I noticed a cold salutation passed between
them. There was no companionship and
evidently there existed distaste, a repelling
power proving that when interests clash,
two of a trade seldom agree."
Later a court of inquiry was held in Mary-
land in late November of 1836 to investigate
the charges and counter charges of General
Gaines and General Scott. During the in-
quiry General Gaines expressed his feelings
concerning General Scott. He said, "I had
reason to apprehend from the tardiness of
his movement, that a disease which Gen-
eral Scott contracted towards me, in August,
1814, had not been completely cured. It
was, probably, that sickness of the spleen,
which the best doctors say find ease only in
the misery of others."
General Scott's military campaigns in
Florida were unsuccessful. In defense,
General Scott wrote letters to Washington,
excusing himself for the many campaign
failures that occurred during his command.
Some of his letters were not kind to the Flor-
ida citizens. He said, "The inhabitants could
see nothing but an Indian in every bush." He
also wrote, "The planters in the recent case
near Tallahassee, who fled without knowl-
edge whether they ran from squaws or war-
riors." Needless to say, General Scott wasn't
popular with the Seminole Indians or the
whites in Florida
Despite General Scott's poor perfor-
mance and image in the Second Seminole
War, he was a great American military tac-
tician in the art of European Warfare. He
wrote several books on military tactics. One
publication would later become a standard
manual for the United States Federal Army
during the Civil War. Today he is best known
in American Military History for the "Ana-
conda Plan," a brilliant Civil War plan that
played an important role in the defeat of the
South.
Washington delicately reassigned Gener-
al Scott to Alabama to subdue hostile Creeks
that might join the Seminoles. In Florida, he
was eventually replaced by Major General
Thomas Jesup in 1836, who engaged the
Seminoles using different tactics. General
Scott tried sending large columns out in an
attempt to force the Seminoles into a set
battle, while General Jesup concentrated
on wearing the Seminoles down. This tactic
would require a much larger military force
that would include not only Army and local
militia, but Marines and Navy.
General Jessup was more successful
but he too would pass on command to an-
other General. In May, 1838, Zachary Taylor
took on the final burden of command in the
Florida Theater, until the Seminole War un-
officially ended in 1842.

Clewiston Sports Network Website Launches
Youth, adult recreation leagues, and
sports teams in the Clewiston area now have
an exciting online sports page and resource
they can call their own.
A new website, Clewiston Sports Net-
work, is now launched and is ready to be
used by the local sports community. The
web address is: lii fln ,.- i .. ..'" /
ClewistonSportsNetwork
The site is a partnership between the
Clewiston News and Community Sports
Desk, a national sports software company.
"Whether it's rec leagues, schools, or
whatever the sport, the Clewiston Sports
Network is a way for people to share their
enthusiasm for the programs they are in-
volved with," said Jose Zaragoza, editor of
the Clewiston News.
Clewiston Sports Network is designed
to allow the people who know their league
best the rec center directors, coaches, even
the players themselves -to deliver informa-
tion to the people who care about it most.
Team representatives can post their
schedules, game stories, statistics, standings
and photos on dedicated web pages on the
site. Each league or team will be provided a
username and password so they can update
anytime, from anywhere they have inter-
net access. In addition to appearing on the
website, selected league and team informa-

she could repay the money, but the associa-
tion said it would press charges.
Bank cashiers later picked Curry out of
a photo line up as having been the person
who attempted to cash the check in May.
Several weeks later, a police detective
made contact with Langford, who told him
that she "requested Summer Nicole Curry
to sign Graciela Luna's signature." She told
him that the money was used to pay per-
sonal bills.
The story was nearly the same for Curry,
who told officers that her mother had asked
her to sign the check once when they didn't
have enough money to buy gas to drive to
Clewiston. She said she did not keep the
money, and turned it over to her mother.
The police department turned the infor-
mation over to the sheriff's office because of
tion will be collected and published in the
Clewiston News print editions.
"I'm really excited about this," said Tom
Byrd, publisher of the Clewiston News. "This
is an invaluable and professional tool the
community now has to positively highlight
local sports. Clewiston Sports Network will
allow more news coverage of more sports
than we've ever had before."
Local sites are also being launched for
communities of other INI affiliated newspa-
pers including Okeechobee, LaBelle, Glades
County, Western Palm Beach County, East-
ern Collier, and Indiantown. The first stories
and teams began to appear on the site this
week, and many more are expected as the
winter season sports get underway.
"In Okeechobee, the Parks and Recre-
ation Department is to be congratulated for
being the first to come aboard and start us-
ing the site," said Byrd. "I invite everyone
to go to lii il ii.. .. ..i /Okeecho-
beeSportsNetwork and take a look at what
they are already doing there."
Clewiston Sports Network won't be lim-
ited to the most obvious sports such as foot-
ball, baseball and basketball. The site can
support virtually any sports or team activity
including golf, soccer, cheerleading, bowl-
ing, even fishing and rodeo. While it is ideal
for youth and adult leagues, schools are en-
jurisdictional issues. The crime spree came
to an end with the mother's arrest on Nov.
11 on charges of uttering forged checks and
theft. Her daughter faces the same charges.
The alleged crime has upset band boost-
er members.
The band boosters group is a well-estab-
lished association dating back more than 20
years.
Ms. Emily Arthur, the association's cur-
rent president (Gracie Luna stepped down
recently), still remembers how the band
booster association helped students like her
in the late 1980s raise funds for the Clewis-
ton Middle and High School bands.
The group has been diligently working at
the task ever since.
Each year, in its largest fundraising event,
the band booster association sells Christmas
trees on U.S. 27, in a lot next to the McDon-
ald's.
The money is used to offset costs incurred
by the local bands, and pays for expenses in
sending students to concert competitions,
courage to use the capabilities of the site
as well.
In partnership with the paper, Com-
munity Sports Desk representative Renee
Hawley has been contacting local teams
and leagues to assist and share information
on how to get started using the Clewiston
Sports Network. Community Sports Desk
will demonstrate to each league or team
representative how easy it is to submit infor-
mation and use the site.
Ms. Hawley can also provide informa-
tion on how participation on the Clewiston
Sports Network can provide a financial ben-
efit to leagues and teams using the site.
"I am pleased to let everyone know there
is absolutely no charge for teams and leagues
to participate in Clewiston Sports Network,"
Byrd said. "The site will be supported by ad-
vertising, and there is an innovative revenue
sharing model. A percentage of web adver-
tising sales on the site will go back to the
participating teams and leagues."
Interested teams and leagues can contact
Renee Hawley by e-mail at rhawley@com-
munitysportsdesk.com. Or call her toll free
at 888-853-7904 for a demonstration or to
get started right away. To advertise on the
site, contact Judy Kasten at 863-763-3134 or
by e-mail at jkasten@strato.net.
district festivals, marching competitions, and
so on. When young band members have to
worry about their solo performances, the
band boosters are there to help take their
minds off the financial side of performing.
In a telephone interview this week, Ms.
Arthur expressed disappointment about the
case.
"It's a tragedy to know that this goes on,"
she said, worried that the community would
form a skewed perception of the association
in light of Langford's arrest. "It kind of hurts
us as an association," she said.
The group is a stand-alone association
comprised mainly of parents and other local
community members offering their time and
energy toward a good cause. If the charges
are true, it is a shame that one of its own
members would do something like this, said
Ms. Arthur.
"Unfortunately, human nature is human
nature," she said.

Pahokee's championship run ends
in Class 2B first round shutout loss
iivi/NajI looias
Pahokee's Fred Pickett (five catches, 47 yards; three rushes, 28 yards) was perhaps the only playmaker in its 35-0 loss
to Chaminade on Nov. 20. Pickett, a West Virigina commit, hauls in a 7-yard reception during the first quarter of the Blue
Devils first offensive drive.

Day move on to regional
title games
By Naji Tobias
INI Florida
HOLLYWOOD It is finished.
That's what happened to the Pahokee
Blue Devils' football season after getting
throttled 35-0 in its Class 2B first round game
against the Chaminade Lions.
In a playoff game that was expected to be
an exciting one, it was anything but.
From the onset, for some inexplicable
reason, this contest did not feel right for Pa-
hokee.
As a team who's usually accustomed
to scoring in bunches and shutting oppos-
ing offenses down, none of that happened
here.
On Pahokee's first possession of the
game, De'Joshua Johnson, this game's start-
ing quarterback, wasn't able to find any
of his receivers open, as he was forced to
scramble for positive yardage.
That series, which ended in a three-and-
out, included a Chaminade sack of John-
son.
All it did was set up for the sheer ugliness
that would ensure afterward.
After Pahokee punted the ball to Chami-
nade, something was clearly amiss on its
defense.
In a sequence that has not been seen
with Pahokee in years, Chaminade took just
two plays to run the ball on the Blue Devils
and score a touchdown on it.
A two-play, 82-yard scoring drive by the
Lions culminated in a 78-yard run by junior
quarterback Jerrard Randall in the first quar-
A 6-0 Chaminade lead, for some reason,
felt like a long night for Pahokee would be
ahead if they didn't answer with a score of
its own.
Johnson, who has proven to be Paho-
kee's most indispensable athlete through-
out this season, could not get into a rhythm
at any point this game, as it took just three
plays for him to throw an interception.
A 7-yard reception by Fred Pickett was
followed by a pick caught by Chaminade de-
fensive back Sherry Whitney on third down
from Pahokee's own 42-yard line.
Pahokee's defense came through on
Chaminade's next offensive possession,
with defensive back Norris White recovering
a fumble on the Lions 18 yard line.
But Pahokee's offense could not muster
any positive yardage in the red zone, as a
negative run, a penalty, a sack, and a fourth-
down incomplete pass killed that drive.
Pahokee finished with just two offensive
first downs in the first quarter a very un-
characteristic statistic for them.
And that ended on a 24-yard pass from
Emmanuel Perez to Pickett, who was, with-
out a doubt, Pahokee's best performer of
the night.
The second quarter looked somewhat
promising for Pahokee, with Perez looking
comfortable at quarterback as he took over
for Johnson.
After leading the Blue Devils to the Cham-
inade 3-yard line, Perez seemed to be taking
care of business, highlighted by a 13-yard
pass to Pickett that put Pahokee in a first-
and-goal situation.
However, when Johnson was switched
back to quarterback on third down from the
Chaminade 2, the Lions sacked him for a
7-yard loss and then stuffed him on fourth-
and-goal from their 9-yard line.
It proved to be one of Pahokee's best
chances of scoring in this game.
Pahokee's defense could not stop Ran-
dall on Chaminade's next possession, as he
took it to the house again on a 31-yard run,
culminating in a five-play drive that featured
just runs.
Pahokee's defense, which is tailor-made
to stop the run, suddenly couldn't do that
anymore as Chaminade took a 12-0 lead.
Randall scored again on the Lions' next
offensive possession, giving Chaminade a
19-0 lead.
The Blue Devils went into halftime star-
ing at an insurmountable 22-0 deficit, after
the Lions converted on a first-half ending 37-
yard field goal.
The second half was utterly forgettable
for Pahokee, as Chaminade's rushing attack
finished the game with 390 yards on 34 car-
ries.
Randall scored his fourth rushing touch-
down in the second half, as he registered
230 rush yards on 12 carries.
Pahokee's quarterback duo of Johnson
and Perez finished with a combined 106
pass yards very uncharacteristic of a nor-
mally explosive team that featured one of
the best wide receiver corps in the state.
Blaze Thompson, the team's third-year
head coach, provided an assessment of this
game and Pahokee's season as a whole.
"I'm proud of this team, but disappointed
with the results," Thompson said. "Hope-
fully, the underclassmen realize we gotta
dedicate ourselves more next year. The tal-
ent we had on this was as much as normal.
For whatever reason, we just didn't score
any points."

Notes: Pahokee, which finished the sea-
son at 6-5, had not lost a playoff game since
the 2005 Class 2B state championship game
- a loss to Ocala-Trinity Catholic.
Chris Dunkley, Pahokee's top wide re-
ceiver, was held out of this game due to a
hamstring injury suffered in the Muck Bowl
against Glades Central.
The Blue Devils, for the first time in
Thompson's tenure as head coach, lost two
games in a row.
Pahokee's offense last reached the end
zone in the first half of the Nov. 14 Muck
Bowl, which resulted in a 47-21 loss.
Though Pahokee's run of a fourth con-
secutive state title (seventh overall) ended
last Friday night, they accomplished some-
thing that no other team before them did.
At least 10 seniors on this year's team will
be going on to play college football next fall
- a statistic that Thompson and his coaching
staff should be very proud of.
Glades Central 27, Cardinal Gibbons
(Fort Lauderdale) 3: A combination of of-
fense, defense and special teams was used
in the Raiders Class 2A first round win.
Tommie Regis, the younger brother of
University of Miami defensive tackle Micanor
Regis, recovered a Gibbons fumble for a 42-
yard score in the first half.
Antwon Chisolm scored on a 39-yard
run, while William Likely ran a 71-yard punt
return for a touchdown early in the fourth
quarter to put the game away.
Glades Central (11-0; this week's Beef O'
Brady's No. 2 team in the state) move on to
the Region 4-Class 2A championship game
against District 8-2A champion American
Heritage (Plantation).
Glades Central will be at home tomorrow
night against its next playoff opponent, with
a game time of 7:30 p.m.
Glades Day 47, MacArthur North (Mi-
ami) 24: Kelvin Taylor rushed for a career-
high 316 rushing yards and five touchdowns
on 26 carries to lead the Gators in its Class
1B first round playoff win.
Glades Day's rushing attack amassed 346
yards for the game, while its rush defense
limited MacArthur North to just 17 yards.
Davonte Allen (two catches, 65 yards)
caught a 30-yard touchdown from Tanner
Redish in the third quarter for a 28-18 lead
that Glades Day would not relinquish.
Glades Day (9-2 overall) came back from
an early 12-0 deficit, with three Taylor touch-
downs in the first half for an 18-12 halftime
lead.
Glades Day's next game is tomorrow
night against two-time Class 1B state cham-
pion Jupiter Christian.
It will be the second meeting of perhaps
the two best Class 1B teams in the state.
The Nov. 20 matchup of these two teams
will be 7:30 p.m. at Port St. Lucie High School
in Port St. Lucie.
The winner of the Glades Day-Jupiter
Christian game will move on to the Class 1B
state semifinals on Dec. 4.
As for the loser? That team's season is
over.

Pahokee's Kaalum Williams, on the sidelines, thinks long and hard on how this
season unfolded for him and his Blue Devils teammates and coaches.

areas around Hendry County together, and
criminals making use of the canals to hide
evidence, it's no wonder that the police de-
partment has decided to ramp up its efforts.
"Our ultimate goal is to recover evidence
lost in a canal to help close criminal cases,"
said Sgt. Pelham. "We've been trained to find
things as small as bullet cases" -- a surprising
fact given that most canals are between 12
to 15 feet deep.
During a training/recovery operation
earlier this month, the rescue team pulled
the body of one Charles William Guffey, 53,
from Immokalee. A car had been spotted
submerged in a canal and there was reason
to believe there was a body inside. The team
assisted Florida Highway Patrol and the Hen-
dry County Sheriff's Office in the recovery.
It showcases the kind of partnership that
the police department has cultivated with
the sheriff's office -- which has four dive
members of its own.
"It's kind of like a mutual aid agreement,"
said Sgt. Pelham. "They get called out, they
call us."
All told, officers seeking certification to
be a part of the dive team undergo approxi-
mately 100 hours of training. The team con-
sists of: Sgt. Pelham, Sgt. Justin Spence, De-
tective Dave Colburn, Officers Jimmy Pilon,
Bree Holley, animal control officer Kathy
Radcliffe and Debby McNeal.
Because it is a new unit, the dive team
only has enough scuba equipment for four
of its members, and even then some of the
gear has been personally purchased by the
officers. The hope is that all the officers can
be issued equipment by the department.
Sgt. Pelham doesn't shy from canvass-
ing residents for any type of donation, since
equipping a single officer with the gear costs
anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500.
"Because we are a small agency, any do-
nations would be accepted," he said.
Alligators aren't the only obstacles divers
face in the water, but as a precaution Florida
Fish and Wildlife is called in to assess the
safety of an area.
New police officer Matt Beatty might have
offered an easier solution to the problem:
never send Florida State fans in to dive.
"Gators are naturally attracted to Semi-
noles," he said.
For more information, or to donate, con-
tact Sgt. Pelham at the Clewiston Police De-
partment, 863-983-1474.
