Clewiston Cub Scout Pack 667
is having their annual "Scouting for
Food" drive. On Saturday, Nov. 7
between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. scouts
will revisit neighborhoods and
pickup food bags where hangers
were distributed the week before.
In addition, you can drop off non-
perishable goods at First United
Methodist Church 331 West Osce-
ola Avenue on Nov. 7 from 10 a.m.
in the morning to 2 p.m. in the af-
ternoon. Food will be distributed

CLEWISTON One down, two
to go.
Last week, three of the Clewis-
ton Cougars six youth league
teams made the Peace River Con-
ference playoffs.
The Junior Pee-Wees (8-1),
one of the two winning Clewis-
ton teams, defeated the Estero
Mustangs, 20-6, in Port Charlotte
Oct. 31.
The treat for this youth league
team was a trip to the Peace River
Conference championship game,
where they will be squaring up
against the Port Charlotte Ban-
dits (7-2) on Saturday (Nov. 7) at
Charlotte Field.
To get to that point, it took a
second half rally by the Junior
Pee-Wees to upend the Mus-
tangs.
Tied at 6-6 going into the sec-
ond half, the Junior Pee-Wee de-
fense made a series of key adjust-
ments which led to just one total
first down allowed for the rest of
the game.

Summers, both 12-year-old of-
fensive athletes, scored a touch-
down each in the second half to

Local woman donates
time for charitable
cause

The first thing she does is take
their heads off and put their bodies
in the washing machine, she says
with a smile.
Then the real work starts for Me-
lissa Agee, a restorer of dolls once-
loved but somehow forgotten. She
finds them discarded at yard sales,
or thrift stores, and fills with excite-
ment when she finds the dolls that
are especially tattered and worn.
She rids them of splotches, re-
threads their fingers, sometimes
even re-rooting their hair through a
painstakingly careful process. She
is a wiz with a sewing machine
and comes up with designs for doll
clothing -- a nod to her grandmoth-
er and great grandmother who cro-
cheted.
When she's done with them,
a process that takes at least four
hours, or much more depending
on the complexity of the job, the
dolls look as though they are new.
To her, rescuing dolls is like any
other hobby a person might take
up.
"It's fun. It is relaxing, but it's

New! The Guardian ad Litem Program
has added a 3-session, Saturday training in
Hendry County, scheduled for Nov. 21, Dec.
5, and Dec. 12. Guardian ad Litem volun-
teers advocate for abused children in court,
the child welfare system and the communi-

described as inflam-

of your stomach. In

toms may include upper abdominal pain
on the left side, vomiting blood, dark stools,
and loss of appetite.
Your Navel Area
What it could be: Appendicitis
A small, finger-shaped pouch, located
on the lower right side of your abdomen,
the appendix can be inflamed and infected
when its opening is blocked. Pain is nor-
mally first felt around the navel area, but
can also extend to the sides or back. While
symptoms vary from a feeling of discomfort
to severe pain, you should seek help if you
have moderate abdominal pain for more
than four hours.
The Abdominal Wall
What it could be: A Hernia
While many different types of hernias
exist, hernias typically occur due to muscle
weakness in and around the abdomen. A
hernia can occur when an organ or tissue
comes through a weakened cavity wall.
Those with hernias often complain of ab-
dominal pain and swelling, fever, and vomit-
ing.
The Lower Abdomen
What it could be: Colitis, Diverticulitis,
Polyps, or Cancer
Lower abdominal pain can be associated
with Colitis (bowel disease), Diverticulitis
(swelling and inflammation of an abnormal
pouch in the intestinal wall), or Polyps (piec-
es of tissue that can grow in the large intes-
tine or colon). Your symptoms may include
cramping, bleeding, fatigue, chills, etc.

Swine Flu Another Priority Attention all

Please know that the Hendry and Glades
County Health Departments are working
very hard to organize vaccination schedules
for the targeted populations which include
the children of our communities.
Soon, students in Middle and High
Schools will bring home consent forms for
parents to fill out completely, sign and return
to the schools.
We are working closely with the schools
in Hendry and Glades Counties to schedule
vaccinations.
At this time, parents of Elementary School
Students will need to bring their child to one
of the vaccination "after-hours" clinics.
Please note: Students that are 9 years of
age and under will need two doses of the
vaccine (30 days apart), so we are asking
parents to bring those children to our sched-
uled vaccination clinics as well.

the vaccine, please talk to your local health-
care provider or the local health department.
You can also call the Florida Flu Information

These vaccinations are voluntary and
free.
Please keep in mind that these dates are

Baldomero Aragus, 57
BELLE GLADE Baldomero Aragus, age 57,
passed away Oct. 19, 2009, in Lakeside Medical
Center in Belle Glade.
Mr. Aragus was born in San Pedro, Texas, on
Aug. 11, 1952, the son of Jesus Aragus and Petra
Vela.
He married Imelda Montes, she survives. Also
surviving include his children, Javier Aragus,
Juan Manuel Aragus, Mario Aragus, Jose Ara-
gus, Sonia Aragus and son-in-law Ramon Marti-
nez; grandchildren, Vianney Aragus, Jon
Aragus, Aracely Aragus, Sebastain Aragus, Rose-
mary Aragus, Kane Aragus, Jaylin Aragus, Kate-
lin Aragus, Samantha Aragus, Daniela Martinez

CLEWISTON -Elsa Lopez Iglesias, 69, loving
wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.
She is survived by her children and step-chil-
dren, Manuel (Mechelle), Carlos, Martha (Cary),
Robert (Dawn), Jorge (Joanne), Juan (Rhonda);
and her grandchildren, Lindsy, Olivia, Alex,
Cameron, Hunter, Kylie, Clara, Jorge, Carlos, So-
phia, Caleb and Juan Carlos. She was prede-
ceased by her husband of 26 years, Manuel V
Iglesias.
Funeral services and Mass were held locally
on October 30th and 31st. She was buried
alongside her husband in Miami on Oct. 31.

neral Home in Clewiston. Florida.

Clewiston traveled to LaBelle Friday night
and was in search of an important district
win and bringing home the Hendry County
championship. They accomplished both
but things got tight along the way, as the re-
surgent Cowboys would just not go quietly.
When the dust settled, the Tigers had a 40-
27 victory.
LaBelle took the opening kickoff and re-
turner Michael Pittman raced 39 yards to put
their offense in business at the Tiger 35. The
Tiger defense held them for two downs but
then was flagged for a 15-yard personal foul
infraction. Three snaps later quarterback
Jordan Phillips hit a wide-open Chris Garcia
with a 5-yard touchdown pass. The point
after kick by Garcia hit the right upright and
bounced back onto the playing area.
After that, the first half was pretty much
all about the Tigers. It only took 3 snaps
to cover 55 yards with tailback Chris Her-
ring scoring from 8 yards out. Fullback Fred
Washington had set up the score with a 44-
yard burst up the middle. Kicker Grant Pol-
hill nailed the extra point to give Clewiston a
7-6 advantage. The defense quickly forced a
LaBelle punt. From their 30, it only required
4 snaps before the Tigers were back in the
end zone. This time, Washington shook
lose up the middle and went 49 yards for the
score. Polhill converted to make it 14-6. The
defense again stopped the Cowboys and the
Tiger offense took possession at their own
45. Herring had runs of 13, 8 and 15 yards
that were sandwiched around 3 comple-
tions by quarterback Andres Rios. Herring
got the final 10 yards going off tackle and
Polhill converted to put Clewiston up 21-6.
The Cowboy offense took the following
kickoff but didn't hold onto the ball long.
On the first play, a Phillips pass was inter-
cepted by Tiger cornerback Ahmad Richards
at midfield. Seven plays later, Rios fired a
strike to wideout Damion Smith who made
a one-handed circus catch between two
defenders as he crossed the goal line. The
point after snap could not be handled and
the teams went to intermission with the Ti-
gers on top, 27-6.
The Tigers emerged for the second half in
a gleeful mood and perhaps a little over con-
fident. The Cowboys came out ready to play
football. The Cowboys recovered an onside
kick but went three and out and punted. The
Tigers, who had easily marched and scored
on their first 4 possessions of the contest,
suddenly found themselves facing a different
defense. Three plays went nowhere and the
teams exchanged two punts each after be-
ing held. The second Tiger punt was a short
one and gave the Cowboys the ball at the
Tiger 38. On the first snap, wingback Chris
Garcia took a handoff on a misdirection play
and galloped 38 yards. LaBelle went for
two and heavyweight tailback Andre Jones
punched it across to narrow the Tiger lead
to 27-14.
After holding the Tiger offense, the Cow-
boys began a late third quarter 60-yard drive
that required 8 plays. Garcia set up the score
on a trick play where he pulled up short of
the line of scrimmage and passed to flank-
er Pat Johnson for 19 yards to the Tiger 3.
Garcia hit the line for the final 3 yards and
then converted the point after to tighten the
noose, 27-21 with 10:40 left in the game.
The Tiger appeared to be in deep trouble
when Washington had the ball stripped on
the first play of the following series. As if
he had not already done enough damage
on the night, Chris Garcia recovered for the
Cowboys at the Tiger 32. However, Clewis-
ton got a break when Jones took a handoff
and went wide and was hit for a 5-yard loss
and fumbled the ball. Tiger sophomore
linebacker Edrick Crosby scooped it up and
went untouched for a 59-yard touchdown.
The Tigers went for two points but the pass
sailed high. The Tigers had padded their
lead at 33-21.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Tiger defense
got stingy and forced the Cowboys to try
a fourth and three run with Garcia being
stopped a yard short. The Tigers wasted no
time as freshman tailback Virthavious Rob-
inson raced off tackle and up field for a 50
yard score. Polhill added the extra point to
make it 40-21.
Each team then held the other with the
Cowboys being held on downs again and
the Tigers then punting giving LaBelle the
ball at their 17-yard line. On the fifth play
of the drive, Garcia broke free and trotted
67 yards to score with only 1:11 left in the
game. The extra point kick was off the mark
and the scoring finally ended.
LaBelle's Chris Garcia led all rushers on
the night with 134 yards on 8 carries with
three touchdowns rushing and another on
a reception. Virthavious Robinson led Tiger
runners with 115 yards on 11 rushes and a
50-yard touchdown. Fullback Fred Washing-
ton had 101 on 6 attempts including a 49-
yard burst for a score. Tailback Chris Her-
ring had 89 yards on 14 carries and scored
two touchdowns.
Defensively, linebackers Chauncey Thick-
lin and Brant Richardson led the Tigers with
seven solo tackles each. Thicklin had two
quarterback sacks and one rushing sack for
losses totaling 23 yards. Linebacker Dillon
Irey had five solo tackles, an assist and four
rushing sacks.
Tiger coach Joe Roth said, "We just gave
them too many opportunities to stay in the
game. We definitely must improve our sec-
ond-half play next week against Dunbar."
Adding, "But we won and kept ourselves
alive for the playoff picture."
The record for the Tigers now stands at
3-5 on the season and 3-1 in district play.
LaBelle dropped to 1-7 on the year and 1-3
in the district. Clewiston, Dunbar and Island
Coast are all knotted at 3-1 in district play
with Dunbar coming to Cane Field on Fri-
day night for the Tigers' homecoming game.
The Tigers must win the game in order to
claim the district title. Island Coast plays La-
Belle and is favored to win that game. If the
Tigers don't whip Dunbar, then Island Coast
would have to lose in order for the Tigers to
make the playoffs in the runner-up spot.

Pahokee Blue Devils escape with
overtime win over Palm Beach Lakes
Glades Day notches blowout
victory; Moore Haven has
not been victorious in
district play

WEST PALM BEACH A win is a win for
the Pahokee Blue Devils.
They needed overtime to score a 21-
14 comeback victory over the Palm Beach
Lakes Rams on Oct. 30.
Cutting right to the chase, it was clear
that De'Joshua Johnson was the star of this
game as far as scoring is concerned.
Johnson (2-for-4 passing, 39 yards, 1 TD;
6 rushes, 49 yards, 1 TD; two catches, 44
yards, 1 TD) had a hand in all of Pahokee's
21 points two of which came in the fourth
quarter and overtime.
Down 14-7 with less than two minutes to
go in regulation, Johnson found a way to get
the ball to Dennis Hall for an 18-yard touch-
down pass.
With that score, coupled by an extra
point from Miguel Rodriguez, the game was
sent to overtime.
Then Pahokee (4-1 in District 7-2B play;
6-2 overall) put the icing on the cake with a
5-yard touchdown run from Johnson to seal
the road win.
The close game featured sound defense
from both teams, with Palm Beach Lakes
forcing Pahokee's Emmanuel Perez into two
interceptions in the second half.
Perez (5-for-14 passing, 91 yards, 1 TD,
2 INT) threw to Johnson for a 7-0 Pahokee
lead in the second quarter a 23-yard strike.
Palm Beach Lakes running back Juan
O'Farill (10 carries, 59 yards) scored a rush-
ing touchdown later in the second quarter
- a 4-yard run to tie the game up at 7-7.
Lakes quarterback Cody Bonea (4-for-
11 passing, 56 yards, 1 TD) added another
Rams score not long after that on a 27-yard
pass to Emarkis Gunn.
That was all the scoring for this game,
which Pahokee barely won.
Pahokee (No. 83 in the latest Rivals 100
rankings; No. 16 in this week's Beef O' Bra-
dy's all-classification state poll) plays its final
district game this week at University.
If Pahokee defeats University, then they
will be crowned the District 7-2B champions
with a 5-1record.
Should Pahokee win the district, their
first round opponent will be the winner of
tomorrow's night's Gulliver Prep (Miami)
and Monsignor Pace (Miami) game.
Both Miami teams are 5-1 in District 8-2B,
with the loser being eliminated from the
playoffs.
The District 7-2B champion hosts the Dis-
trict 8-2B runner-up in the first round of the
Class 2B playoffs on Nov. 20.
It may be looking too far ahead, but if Pa-
hokee advances to the second round of the
Class 2B playoffs and that's a big if then
they'll likely be looking to play Chaminade-
Madonna, who at 6-0, is the District 8-2B
champions.
Glades Day 39, King's Academy 17:
Kelvin Taylor and the Gators avenged last
year's 41-7 blowout loss to the Lions in
grand fashion.
In Glades Day's next-to-last regular sea-
son home game, Taylor scored four rushing
touchdowns on 15 carries for 198 yards in
the rout,
Tanner Redish (9-for-16 passing, 205
yards, 1 TD) threw for a score to Clinton
Johnson an 80-yard pass late in the first
quarter.
Glades Day's stingy defense limited King's
Academy to 164 total yards for the game.
Glades Day (2-1 in District 7-1B play; 6-2
overall) goes on the road tomorrow to play
district opponent Zion Lutheran.
Glades Day clinched the District 7-1B run-
ner-up slot two weeks ago.
Out-of-Door Academy 27, Moore
Haven 21: Fred Hall rushed for 174 yards
and two touchdowns on 28 carries, but that
didn't keep Moore Haven from remaining
winless in District 6-1B play.
Moore Haven's road loss allowed Out-
of-Door Academy to clinch the District 6-1B
championship, as the Thunder improved
its record to 4-0 in District 6-1B play and 6-1
overall.
Keonte White (17 carries, 34 yards) added
a rushing touchdown, but his passing was
less-than-stellar, as he went 4-for-8 passing
with just 20 yards and an interception.
Moore Haven (0-4 in District 6-1B play;
4-5 overall) will play its final game of the
season tomorrow night against district op-
ponent Bradenton Christian.
Interestingly, tomorrow's game will be
Senior Night for the Terriers.
It will mark as Hall's final high school
football game of his career, as he looks to
add to his 1,468 rushing yards and 21 total
touchdowns.
If the Terriers win tomorrow, then they
will finish with a 5-5 record for the second
consecutive season.
If not, then Moore Haven will finish 4-6,
giving Jason Bond a 13-17 overall record in
his three seasons as head coach.

CMS Science Fair Tutorial
Clewiston Middle School is offering a
twice a week tutorial for any student need-
ing guidance with science fair. Students
will be able to get advice on project ideas;
writing the research plan, research paper,
and abstract; putting the display board to-
gether; and talking to the judges. The ses-

A Walk in the Past: The story behind Camp Izard

General Gaines, commander of the West
Florida military forces, embarked from New
Orleans and arrived at Ft. Brooke (Tampa
Bay area) on Feb. 8, 1836, with a force of
1,100 men. He rested the soldiers several
days and then set out for Fort King (Ocala
area) where he discovered the grisly re-
mains of Major Dade and his command (104
soldiers).
Gaines then continued to Fort King for
provisions and the prospect of joining forces
with General Winfield Scott, who was ru-
mored to be marching from the east. He
hoped the two combined forces could cre-
ate a pincer movement that would envelope
the Seminoles. When Gaines reached the
fort, he found that the soldiers posted there
had sufficient supplies only for themselves,
so due to low supplies, Gaines was forced to
march back to Fort Brooke.
On the return trip, Gaines decided to take
a different trail, which ran approximately
fifty miles west of the old trail. One reason
Gaines chose this new route was because
the Indian guides told him the trail would
junction with the Withlacoochie River at a
favorable crossing. On Feb. 27, 1836, Gaines'
army reached the river after marching for
two days, but there was no fordable river
crossing for his men, only hostile Seminoles,
who fired upon his army as they searched
for the crossing.
The Indian guides acted confused and
told General Gaines the fordable crossing
was three miles further up the river. The
next day the army marched to the new lo-
cation and received continuous fire from
the Seminoles, who were protected on the
opposite bank by the river's high sandy em-
bankments. Several men were wounded
while searching for the river crossing, and
one of the officers, Lieutenant James Izard,
received a fatal wound and died.
Finally, the Indian guides confessed they
were unfamiliar with the area and had no
clue where the soldiers could cross. Gaines
elected to move his army about a half mile
from the river into a pine barren, where he
hoped to draw the Seminoles. There the sol-
diers built a breastwork of logs for protec-
tion and waited. General Dade would later
name the primitive stockade "Camp Izard,"
in honor of Lieutenant James Izard.
Gaines sent riders to Fort Drane, recom-
mending General Clinch to act at once and
bring his forces to bear on the opposite
side of the river. His plan was to combine
his forces with General Clinch's and attack
the cunning foe from both sides of the river,
crushing them. However, the plan began to
backfire when many of the elusive Semi-
noles crossed the river and started employ-
ing guerilla tactics. Each day the Seminoles
caught some of the surrounding dry grasses
on fire, using the smoke from the burning
grasses as cover, so they could creep close
to the soldiers and fire.
General Gaines now found his army un-
der siege, and to make matters worse, the
soldier's rations were almost depleted. The
men's rations were reduced to one cup of
dried corn per day. Gaines also ordered sev-
eral horses shot daily to supplement the sol-
dier's meager corn rations.
No doubt these men reflected back on
the horrible carnage they had discovered at
the Dade Massacre site and pondered their
future
The besieged army was surprised on
March 5, 1836, by a Negro's voice sounding
from the adjacent woods. At the top of his
voice, the Negro told the soldiers that the
Indians were tired of fighting and wished
to come in and shake hands. The following
morning, several Seminole leaders emerged
from the surrounding woods at a distance
of four to five hundred yards. A gaudily-
dressed Seminole approached the Ameri-
can's spokesperson, a Louisiana volunteer
called Barrow. The Seminole was Osceola,
who informed the American that the Semi-
noles didn't wish to fight any longer and was
desirous that the soldiers withdraw from the
Withlacoochie.
The Seminoles desire for peace created a
political situation. Osceola and Gaines now
shared a common problem, neither had
the authorization to negotiate peace terms.
Gaines requested that the Seminoles retire
to the opposite side of the river and wait
peaceably until United States officials could

the other Seminole leaders agreed to retire

This peaceful transition
was abruptly interrupted .
when General Clinch's ad-
vance guard arrived on the -T
scene. Clinch saw some of
the Seminoles and immedi-
ately formed his army into
ranks and attacked, scat-
tering the Seminoles to the
four winds and cancelling General Gair
any hopes of a peaceful res-
olution with the Seminole
Nation.
Earlier, General Clinch had received Gen-
eral Gaines' request for help, but was re-
strained by General Winfield Scott to keep
his forces at Fort Drane. Clinch and his com-
mand, stationed at Fort Drane, heard canon
fire coming from the battle, and they feared
the worst. Finally, General Clinch could no
longer bear the thought of General Gaines'
besieged army at the mercy of the Semi-

and sent a 500-man relief force to rescue
General Gaines' command.
General Gaines would later take Gen-
eral Scott to court and prove that Scott had
refused to aid a fellow officer. However,
General Scott was never prosecuted. Gen-
eral Gaines is known today in Florida for a
city named in his honor. The city is called
Gainesville, home of the "Florida Gators."

LINDRICK SYSTEM AND WATER RATES FOR THE COLONIAL
MANOR, DIXIE GROVES, HOLIDAY, PASCO UTILITIES, INC. AND
VIRGINIA CITY SERVICE AREAS LOCATED IN PASCO COUNTY,
FLORIDA
The Ronda Governmental Utility Authority ("FGUA") Announces a public
hearing to which all interested persons are invited. The FGUA is a legal en-
tity and public body created pursuant to the provisions of Section 163.01,
Flonda Statutes, and an Interlocal Agreement among Citrus County, Flon
da, DeSoto County, Florida, Hendry County, Flonda, Lee County, Florida,
Pasco County, Florida, Polk County, Florida, and the Town of Dundee, Flon
da. Such public hearing will be held to determine whether the acquisition
by the FGUA of the water and wastewater assets of the Lindnck System
and the water assets of the Consolidated Systems is in the public interest,
and to consider the adoption of the rate schedule for water and wastewa-
ter rates within the future FGUA service areas serving the Lindnck and the
water rates within the future FGUA service areas serving the Consolidated
Systems. The FGUA Board will also address general operating issues of the
FGUA. The public hearing and regular meeting will be held at
10:00 a.m. on November 19, 2009 at the West Pasco Government
Center, Commission Chambers, 7530 Little Road, New Port Ri-
chey, Florida. These rates will be effective for services provided effective
on the date of sale on or about December 18, 2009 and thereafter and are
on file with the FGUA Board Clerk and are available for review upon re
quest.All customers of the FGUA, affected property owners, tenants or oc-
cupants, and all other interested persons, shall have an opportunity to be
heard concerning the proposed acquisition of the water and wastewater as-
sets of the Lindnck System and the water assets of the Consolidated Sys
teams located in Pasco County, Flonda, and the proposed rate increased
related thereto. Al such persons shall also be entitled to file written com-
ments with the FGUA. If a person decides to appeal any decision made by
the FGUA with respect to any matter considered at the heanng, such per
son will need a record of the proceedings and may need to ensure that a
verbatim record is made, including the testimony and evidence upon which
the appeal is to be made. In accordance with the Amencans with

County City Farm Tour
The Hendry County Farm-City Tour Coun-
cil will be holding its 28th annual farm tour
of the Hendry County agricultural industry,
Saturday, December 5, 2009. Tickets for the

Jefferson Jackson Dinner
The Democratic Executive Committees
of Glades, Henry, Highlands and Okeecho-
bee have joined in a cooperative effort to
host the annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner.
In the past each County has hosted their
own dinner with the proceeds being used
for high school scholarships programs.
Due to the current economic environ-
ment, our organizations have significantly
reduced their scholarship dollars.
Rhett Bullard, Vice Chairman of the
Florida Democratic Party will be the key-
note speaker.
Candidates that have confirmed their
attendance are Kendrick Meek and Kevin
Burns for US Senate, Cris Craft for US Rep-
resentative, Alex Sink, Farid Khavari and
Michael Arth for Governor, Dave Aron-
berg and Dan Gelber for Attorney General,

And Juan Norton Sr., the Junior Pee-Wees
head coach, knows that all too well.
So going into Monday night's (Nov. 2)
practice, he wanted his players to begin the
week like they're in a live game-type atmo-
sphere.
Practicing in the bright night lights, the
players put their full hearts on display, show-
ing that they have what it takes to win the
next game.
In all fairness, though, we don't know
how Port Charlotte is practicing this week
for the Junior Pee-Wees.
It doesn't matter, as the Junior Pee-Wee
defense will most likely be up against Port
Charlotte's Wing T offense.
In short, the defensive practices this week
are primarily geared toward efforts to stop
the run a necessary trait that championship
teams generally display in big games.
"It takes hard work to make a champi-
on," Norton Sr. said.
"With these teams we're going up
against, we need to keep the opposing of-
fense off the field. We need to control the
ball and maximize the use of our athletes."
Aside from Tolbert (the younger brother
of former Glades Central Raiders standout
DeAngelo Tolbert) and Summers (the son
of Clewiston Tigers assistant football coach
Phillip Summers), the Junior Pee-Wees have
playmakers in athletes such as Anthony
Steele, Juan Norton Jr. and D'Vonta Moore.
"The older but lighter kids are showing
the younger ones what to look forward to in
terms of sportsmanship and attitude," said
Jesse Comacho, the offensive/defensive line
coach of the Junior Pee-Wees.
"It's not so much about winning; it's
about all about of us encouraging each oth-
er and playing as a team."
With that being said, conditioning may
end up being the key determinant of wheth-
er or not the Junior Pee-Wees will win the
conference title on Saturday.
"Play when your tired," Norton Sr. said,
as his players were running a series of gas-
sers toward the end of practice.
"Go hard, go hard...I like your enthusi-
asm."
If the Junior Pee-Wees beat Port Charlotte
on Saturday, then they will move on to the
Peace River Regionals, which convenes next
weekend in Port St. Lucie.
"Every play, we gotta play it like it's our
last," Norton Sr. said about the Jr. Pee-Wees
next game. "We can't leave anything on the
field."
Notes: The Pee-Wees (6-3) also moved
on to the Peace River Conference champion-
ship, where they will be playing the North
Port Mustangs (7-2) this Saturday at Char-
lotte Field.
The Jr. Midgets (7-2) suffered a first round
road loss Oct. 31 to the Naples Bears, 30-18,
thus ending their season.
The Sr. Midgets, the Mighty Mites and the
Tiny Mites did not make the playoffs.

The Hendry Regional Medical Center Foundation planted a Christmas tree

Wayward Whales

It happened 24 years ago, but Sacramen-
to Bay Area residents still talk about when
Humphrey the Humpback whale touched
their lives on that 5th day of November in
1985.
The wayward whale swam into the Sac-
ramento River, attracting 10,000 people a
day as whale experts tried desperately to
turn it around.
Humphrey went back to sea after 25 days
of near-pandemonium and worldwide me-
dia attention.
Ever since that day, Humpback whales
have held a special place in the hearts of Bay
Area residents.
Over the years Bay Area volunteers have
come together a number of times to help
wayward whales.
One of the locals commented, "Hum-
phrey taught people how to work together."
In 2005, a 50-foot female humpback
whale was on the usual migratory route
along the California coast when it became
entangled in nylon ropes that link crab pots.
A crab fisherman spotted the whale and
radioed for help.
Within a few hours, a rescue team ar-
rived and determined that the only way to
save the whale was to dive in and untangle
her a very dangerous proposition, since
one slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.
The first diver in shared that his heart sank
when he saw all the lines wrapped around
the whale and really didn't think they were
going to be able to save it.
About 20 crab-pot ropes, each about 240
feet long with weights every 60 feet, along
with at least 12 crab traps weighing 90
pounds each were wrapped multiple times
around the tail and the back and left front
flippers, and there was a line in the whale's
mouth.
The combined weight was pulling the
whale downward, forcing it to struggle just
to keep its blow- hole out of the water.
Four divers worked over an hour with
curved knives and eventually freed her. The
whale floated passively the whole time.
The guy who cut the rope out of her
mouth said her eye was there "winking
at me, watching me the whole time." He
shared that it was an experience he would
never forget.
When the whale realized it was free, it
began swimming joyfully around in circles.
She then came back to one of the divers,
nuzzled him, and then swam to the next
diver and nuzzled him as well.
Each diver was nuzzled as if she was
thanking each one personally. They said it
was the most incredible experience of their
lives
May all of us know the joy of giving and
receiving gratitude, and may all of us be
blessed with a most incredible experience
in our lives.
May each of us also be so blessed with
people who will risk themselves to help us
get untangled from the things that are bind-
ing us, and may we be so willing to do the
same to help those who need us.
Farewell to Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is disappearing! I am going
to miss it.
All those happy experiences of Thanks-
giving past. Blessed days filled with the joy of
stopping everything else, just to be grateful
to God.
Sentimental remembrances of fam-
ily gatherings, of worship, of our prayers
around the feast table. It was all so-o good,
and good for us!
But each year Thanksgiving seems to
matter less and less. It simply has too much
going against it. Football dominates the fam-
ily room.
You can, of course, turn the set so your
family can gulp down the food and watch
the game at the same time. No conversation,
of course. Prayer during the commercial...
Maybe.
But Thanksgiving's a real misfortune in
that it is simply too close to Christmas. It's
no closer than it ever was.
But Christmas is growing. It used to be in
December. Now it's spread all the way back
to October.
A recent study of Dr. Ima Forecaster from
the Institute of Pagan Practices shows that
within the next decade Christmas trees with
a patriotic motif (a flag where the star used
to be, perhaps) will be used to celebrate the
4th of July.
And by the year 2020 the Easter Bunny
will arrive in a red, fur-lined coat, pulled by
eight tiny reindeer.
So what chance does Thanksgiving have?
After all, it was always a rather quiet, warm
time.
No expensive presents to buy. Other than
the food industry, nobody cashed in on it
very much.
So it figures that with an appeal only to
thankfulness to God and enjoying the love of
family, it doesn't stand a chance! If you can't
buy it or sell it, who needs it!
So farewell, dear Thanksgiving. You were
a wonderful warm day for us while you
lasted.
Too bad you didn't have something more
to offer us. No tinsel. No holiday decanters.
Just gratitude to God. And that's gone out of
style in our land. We're too busy "getting" to
thank the Giver.
But take heart! The festivity of Christmas
2009 is already turning up. I can hear it now.
"Angels we have heard on high, Telling us go
out and buy.."
We will miss you, Thanksgiving. More
than we in this land have ever begun to
imagine!
Were the pilots asleep? No,
they were just using their
computers!

My father was employed the second half
of his life for one of the major airlines. We
heard many of the stories about goings-on
that didn't make the headlines.
Air travel was (and is) a safe way of travel
but not without its human foibles. When
two pilots on a major carrier overflew the
Minneapolis airport recently, and were out
of contact with the control tower, I was
grateful for their safe arrival after the plane
got turned around.
Were the pilots asleep? No, they denied
being asleep. Was that possible? Probably,
with the status of automatic piloting and the
planes that almost "fly themselves" these
days. What then?
Finally, an answer was forthcoming. The
pilots were engrossed on their personal
computers! Rapt attention! A hypnotic state!
Being capable of tuning out the entire world
around them!
Detaching from their responsibilities and
obligations, losing a sense of time!
Lest we get too detached ourselves, there
is such a thing as "highway hypnosis", when
drivers stop paying attention due to the mo-
notony of a trip.
Cell phones are coming under scrutiny
more and more as something akin to what
the two pilots were experiencing; vehicles
that almost drive themselves and can put the
operator to sleep -at least partially.
When boredom sets in; humans seem
to have the capacity to seek something to
fill the void and the potential for tragedy is
greatly multiplied.
There is a priceless incident mentioned in
the Book of Acts about someone who was
apparently bored and fell asleep; Eutychus
(Acts 20: 8 ff.)
He had no computer to keep him from
boredom in those days, "Seated in a win-
dow was a young man called Eutychus, who
was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked
on and on.
When he was sound asleep, he fell to the
ground from the third story and was picked
up dead (Acts 20:9)."
The story for Eutychus has a happy end-
ing; Paul recognized that "He's alive!" and
they all returned upstairs once more to cel-
ebrate their breaking of bread.
Aside from being a caution to boring
preachers, the more serious lesson is to "Pay
attention to your surroundings and what
you're about!"
Getting distracted is tempting when peo-
ple feel bored; maybe there is something
that doesn't have your attention at the mo-
ment but may be life-saving, literally, if you
notice it.
Prioritizing where our attention should
be is the mark of many of our healers and
greatest helpers. First-aid teaches priorities
in what to do that is most important first,
airline pilots are taught to attend to the most
dangerous of the potential emergencies
when several problems seem to strike all at
once.
Emergency course work that I have tak-
en includes sections on preventing injuries
to the helper so that one can remain help-
ful and not be another part of the problem.
Feelings of boredom?
They're really a call to "Pay attention,
there's an accident waiting to happen, don't
be a part of it!"

fun to have something that looks terrible,
and then give it a new life," she said.
Some people sell dolls like these on the
Internet for a profit, but that is not what
drives Mrs. Agee. On Tuesday, she drove to
the local Salvation Army in LaBelle with 20
of her finest dolls.
She had called them earlier to see if they
would be interested in them, but hoped that
they would be given away and not sold. The
representatives agreed, and told her they
would be given away to a few lucky children
for Christmas.
This has given her a newfound motivation
to continue searching far and wide for new
dolls. She understands that most children
have few things they can call their own -- but
among these few possessions are dolls.
Her favorite kind of dolls to rescue are
Cabbage Patch dolls.
Her husband sometimes wonders about
her, she says laughing.
"He thinks I'm crazy, but he likes that I'm
donating them," she said. "He's just being
funny, but he's all for it."
She has children of her own, but they're
all much too old to play with the toys. Her
biggest motivator is the hope that children
will treasure the dolls.
"You can tell they were loved and played
with for many years. Once they're restored,
they'll get played with again. It feels good,
knowing especially in this day and age, peo-
ple don't have a lot."
The hard part is letting go.
There are some dolls she knew imme-
diately that she would donate -- even some
she didn't have in her collection. Other dolls,
however, prove a difficult prospect to part
with. After all, as with any other project,
spending so much time promises that she
would get attached to them.
She is hesitant to admit that she names
her dolls. There are a few of them: Kimberly
Ann, and Abigail Mackenzie. Maya Rachelle
and Effie Mae -- who reminded Melissa of
her grandmother, "I'm not quite sure why,"
she said.
But part with them she does, though, be-
cause she hopes that someone somewhere
will find as much joy in caring for them as
their previous owners may have. She is a
kind of middleman in this concept of re-
cyling toys, but plays an important role in
the cycle.
It is a genuinely caring and noble ven-
ture.
"They're toys, but I would like a little kid
to think, wow, and remember that they got
these toys," she said. "A lot of time was put
into them."
