................... John Briggs remembers clearly the art
that captured the Bible's epic tales.
As a young boy in Naples, Fla., Briggs
attended a Sunday school that used pic-
tures along with the lessons to help the
children visualize what they studied.
"I always gravitated toward those pic-
tures," Briggs recalled. "They brought
the stories to life for me."
Just as striking, Briggs said, was the
realization of just how those pictures
were created.

Halfway through a 30-month
sentence, former Plant City
police officer Armand Cotnoir
was released from prison last
week, in time to spend Christmas
with his family.
U.S. District Judge Richard A.
Lazzara reduced Cotnoir's sen-
tence to 12 months, and because
Cotnoir had served nearly 15
months, he was released Dec. 23,
said Art Eggers, Cotnoir's trial
attorney.
Cotnoir's wife, Kim, met her
husband at the federal prison
facility in Pensacola, and they
arrived back in the Plant City
area on Christmas Eve, Eggers
said.
"This is the best Christmas
present his family and friends
could ever get," Eggers said.
Cotnoir, 29, was sentenced in
May 2003 after pleading guilty, in
the middle of his trial, to eight
charges including civil rights vio-
lations, participating in illegal
searches and the theft of a porno-
graphic videotape.
It was initially expected he
could be released after serving
about 26 months, which would
have set his earliest release date
at Christmas 2005.
"The early release of Mr. Cot-
noir is due to the request and
good work of the U.S. Attorney,
Paul Perez, and Judge Richard
Lazzara, who both went out of
their way to make this celebra-
tion of Christmas very meaning-
ful for the Cotnoir family," Eggers
said. "This was an unusual but
welcomed decision that is
extremely welcome and goes a
long way of getting that family
back into a normal life again."

hugs and tears of joy translated justfine,
A group of employees from four First
Watch restaurants in the Tampa Bay area
made an emotional visit to the Dover
Center of the Redlands Christian Migrant
Center last week to donate a special
stroller to Amador and Juana Salazar and
armfuls of gifts to the center's 83 chil-
dren.
"It's awesome," said Stephanie Board-
man, who serves tables at First Watch in
Carrollwood. "I'm really glad someone
could help."
The Salazars' 20-month-old daughter
Marcia has cerebral palsy that dramati-
cally limits her movements. Now that
Marcia is 30 pounds and the Salazars
have a 7-month-old son, transporting
Marcia is difficult.
When they heard about the plight, the
100 employees in the four restaurants
gave up their annual holiday party to pay
for a $1,200 stroller for the Salazars. They
also used their own money to purchase
gifts for other children who frequent the
center. Each employee signed up for a
specific child.
The employees delivered the stroller
and gifts on Dec. 22. As they looked on,
some wiping tears, the Salazars lifted
Marcia into the stroller and took a test lap
around the center's playground. After the
lap, Juana Salazar hugged everyone on
the playground and Amador shook each
hand.
Later, under a clear blue sky, children
ripped into bright wrapping paper and
exclaimed delightedly in Spanish at their
gifts. Then, Steve Caulk, general manager
of the four stores that took part,
announced that the First Watch corporate
office decided to match the employees'
efforts and presented a check to the
center for $1,200.

Faye Durant, who worked in
that position since 1999, was
named to work in that same
position at Nathan B. Young
Magnet School for math, sci-

Tampa, starting Feb. 2. Hills-
borough County School admi-
nistrators also announced that
Sylvia Hastings, principal at

Plant City businessman
Rick Lott announced his
intention to run for the city
commission seat being
vacated by Rich Glorioso, who
announced earlier he would
step down to seek a state
representative seat. Both can-
didates were later elected.
The city commission
approved The First United
Methodist Church of Plant
City's plan to redesign and
improve the streetscape sur-
rounding the church along
Mahoney, Evers, Baker and
Wheeler streets. The com-
pleted project, done to match
the decor around the historic
downtown district, cost about'
$260,000.
South Florida Baptist
Hospital celebrated its 50th
year with cutting-edge tech-
nology, strong community
support and resources through
an alliance with other Tampa
Bay area hospitals. The
hospital also broke ground on
its new, $10 million emer-
gency facility.
The Environmental
Protection Commission pro-
vided a status report to the city
regarding the investigation
into health and environmental
concerns around the Coronet
Industries plant just southeast
of the city limits. While com-
pleted studies are still pend-
ing, the EPC has said the
health and environmental
dangers are minimal, no
greater than similar areas in
Florida. A complete study is
expected by the summer of
2005.

Commissioners voted to

The Durant High School
girls soccer team completed
the season as state runner-ups
after playing a hard fought
game against Parkland Doug-
las, the new Class 6A champi-
ons. The Cougars led 2-0 near
half-time, but were shut out
the rest of the way and lost, 3-
2. The Cougars finished the
season 15-4-4, and won three
games in the playoff before
losing to Douglas.

Judy Barta was named the
2004 Citizen of the Year, rec-
ognized as a tireless volunteer.
The Plant City native and
employee at Sunshine State
Federal Savings and Loan was
the 45th recipient of the
award. The annual award is
sponsored by the Plant City
Kiwanis Club along with par-
ticipation by the other Plant
City civic clubs.
The Florida Strawberry
Festival concluded its 11-day
run with attendance figures
that were helped by good
weather and popular headline
performers. Attendance fig-
ures reached roughly 800,000
visitors, officials said.
Jennifer St. Martin, a jun-
ior at the University of South
Florida, was selected as the
2004 Miss Heart of Plant City
at a pageant held at the 1914
High School Community
Center auditorium, March 22.
St. Martin competed later in
the year in the Miss Florida
competition held in St. Peters-
burg.

increase in the water and
sewer rates charged by the city
utilities division. The increases
will raise the rates for
residential service annually
from $3.77 to $6.40 in 2007.
City staff determined the
increase was needed to help
finance the operation of the
utilities department during
growth in the city residential
base.

The Plant City Lions Club
celebrated 75 years of service
to the community during a
special commemoration at
the Hillsborough Community
College April 3. The chapter,
one of 46,000 in the world and
300 in Florida, raised almost
$40,000 last year for charitable
causes.

Businesswoman Takes To Heart Her Calling

APPROACHES 10 YEARS

You could say Barbara Par-
rish is on a mission from God.
It's about the only way Par-
rish can explain her success in
a business that required a skill
she didn't even know she had.
And forget about crediting
beginner's luck. Parrish is way
past that stage now, with a
business entering its 10th
year, owing a great deal of its
success to the education
market.
Parrish Threads opened not
long after Parrish's husband
passed away. She was left with
two girls to raise, working as a
teacher's aide for the Hills-
borough County school
system.
"But it wasn't good for the
kids," Parrish recalled. "One
day my daughter got sick at
Robinson Elementary School,
and she stayed in the office all
day because they couldn't get
a hold of me. At the end of the
day, when I picked her up, she
was in tears. She thought that
I had died, too. That's when I
knew I had to have a better
plan."
That plan came to her one
day while she was working in
her yard.
"I didn't hear a voice or
anything, but I felt like God
was telling me, 'You need to
go into the embroidery
business.' "Parrish said. "And
I said, 'Well, I don't know
anything about that,' but I
always liked to sew and do
crafts."
Later that night, a friend
visited and Parrish shared
with her the message she
heard in the yard.
"You won't believe this,"
Parrish recalled telling her
friend, "but I feel like God told
me to go into the embroidery
business but I have no clue
what to do."
Her friend put her in touch
with a woman in the business,
and despite Parrish's initial
doubts, especially in light of
the high-cost of the machines
necessary to get started, she
forged ahead and has never
looked back.
"It was at a time in my life
where I thought, 'Okay, God,
let's try. What's the worst that
can happen?' The worse that

traveled with members of the Greater Plant
City Chamber of Commerce to visit state legis-
lators and members of the state executive
branch, but they had to pay from their own
pockets for the visit. A 2-2 tie during a commis-
sion vote March 22 made the expense nonre-
fundable by the city. A resolution passed last
year made such expenditures for most travel by
city employees subject to a vote.
The election for the city commission seat
being vacated by Rich Glorioso ended in none
of the three candidates receiving a clean major-
ity, causing a run-off election between the
eventual winner Rick Lott and Marsha Pass-
more. Liesta Sykes came in third and was elim-
inated from the runoff. Lott won the May 4
runoff with 55 percent of the vote in his favor.
The Relay For Life fundraiser held April 16-
17 at Plant City High School raised more than
$140,000. Proceeds will be used to help fund
research needed to defeat the disease.

Family and friends of Barbara Ann Good-
wine mourned the death of the 62-year-old
employee of the city's Recreation and Parks
Department. Goodwine, who died April 18,
helped oversee the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Recreation Center for more than three decades
and was known for her motherly demeanor.
Plant City and Durant high schools named
the top students for the 2003-04 school year.
Josh Smith was valedictorian at Plant City High.
Matthew Chandler was salutatorian at Plant
City. Christine Crumbley earned valedictorian
honors at Durant, with Shaun Young as saluta-
torian.
Plant City suffered its first war casualty in
the fighting in Iraq when Petty Officer Ronnie
Ginther, 37, was killed May 2, during a mortar
attack at a Marine base near Ramadi. Ginther
was raised in Dover, graduated from Plant City
High School and lived in Auburndale for the
last 12 years. He is survived by his wife, Donna,

tion that helps put food on America's tables.
"A lot of people don't realize this, but these

gory, such as borders, holi-
days, animals.and sports.
Shoppers also can bring in
their own items to be person-
alized with monograms or
other embroidery designs,
whether it's a jacket, shirt,
tapestry, throw rug, table-
cloth, or whatever.
"I do business with schools
and businesses also, but
schools primarily," Parrish
said. "At first I did a lot of work
for uniform shops, but I don't

Burney Elementary, marked the end of a 34-
year career as an educator and administrator
when he retired on the last school day of the
2003-04 season. McMillan was lauded as a
advocate for his students, parents, faculty and
staff.
After months of delays, the Howard Street
railroad crossing opened to help distribute
vehicle traffic on a north-south direction,
between Alexander and Wheeler streets. The
city had to negotiate for the opening and pay
CSX Transportation about $180,000 for the
signals, crossing gates and all work done inside
the tracks. The city also paid for the road
construction in order to get the crossing
opened.
Teacher, author and historian, D.E. Bailey
was presented with the Plant City Archives
Heritage Award for his dedication to the
preservation of Plant City history, June 19.
Bailey and Quintilla Geer Bruton collaborated
to write the popular "Plant City: Its Origin and
History," still available in hardcover 27 years
after the first edition was published.
Construction on the former AutoNation
complex off Willamette Road began. The $5.2
million renovation will become the home of
the Plant City Police Department was sched-
uled for completion by the end of the year. But
delays caused by the active hurricane season
set the opening back to February 2005.
School administrators were thrilled when
the FCAT scores were announced for area
schools. All area schools but one maintained
or improved their grades. Plant City High
School dropped from a B grade in 2003 to a C

OPINION
General semantics is the
study of language and
meaning and is
intended to help us to think
clearly and to stay in touch
with reality. Neither of those
is as easy as one might
suppose.
A basic theme of general
semantics is recognition that
language is a system of
symbols, both written and
aural, that relate to the stuff of
reality. For example, when we
English-speakers wish to refer
to H20, we say, "water." A
Spanish-speaker would say,
"agua." Here we have the
same reality but two different
symbols for it. There is only
one reality, but there are
thousands of languages.
The important thing to
remember is that the word is
not the thing itself. People
who confuse words with
reality are said to suffer from
a belief in word magic. Words
actually produce no effect
whatsoever on reality. They
are just arbitrary symbols we
use for the purpose of com-
munication. When we say
someone is guilty of some
crime, merely saying it does
not prove it. To say that a
country is a "terrorist state"
does not prove that it is.
Another rule of semantics is
to remember that the uni-

verse consists of unique stuff.
No two people, no two trees,
no two anything are precisely
identical. Alfred Korzybski,
the founder of general
semantics, used a numbering
system to remind us of the
uniqueness of reality. Cow-i1
is not cow-2. The United
States- 1945 is not the same as
the United States-2004. When
someone says, "When you've
seen one, you've seen them
all," he or she is announcing a
closed mind that will miss
much of the beauty of this
world.

A s the founder (and only
member so far) of AABN
Americans Against
Boring Newsletters it should
be easy for me to squeeze
2004 into a 600-word column.
Leading by example, the
Mauls limited this year's
family dispatch to 10 one-sen-
tence bullets on a half-page
fold for a total of 171 words.
On the receiving end, we
weren't so lucky. One lengthy
tome included the following
disclaimer: "Forgive the small
print but we're trying to keep
this to four pages." I'm talking
single-spaced full-sized
sheets of paper with no
margins. A magnifying glass
would have been nice.
One recurring loquacious
epistle typically includes such
digressions as, "In April my
neighbor stopped by with her
friend Molly. Molly's youngest
is 14 and enjoyed a birthday
trip to London with some of
his school chums including
Mary who won a school prize
and had her picture in the
paper....
Don't get me wrong, I'm
sure that so-and-so's neigh-
bor's friend's son's seventh
pick for the birthday party is a
fine human being. But the
kid's entire family could be
abducted by aliens from the
planet Zortec and it wouldn't
affect my Christmas either

She is a retired Verizon engineer, and John, a
retired physical therapist. Both are longtime Plant
City residents. "There's a road (Forbes) named for
my great-great uncle."
Dixie has started her own business at Rhonda
Williams' Dance Expressions, Aurora Music &
Performing Arts, and will be auditioning children
ages 6 and up for "Alice and Wonderland" on Jan. 10
and Jan. 15. On Jan. 8, she will hold a grand opening
at 206 S. Evers St. from 2 to 4 p.m.

I heard Keith and Kathy Cribbs were here last week
from Nashville to help Felton Williams celebrate his
80th birthday. About 150 were in attendance at

Traffic fatality
A Plant City man was killed when the motor-
cycle he was driving crossed the center line on
a curve near the intersection of State Road 574
and Sammons Road on Dec. 23, sliding under
a semi traveling in the opposite direction,
police said.
Gerardo Saucedo-Mata, 22, of 4610 State
Road 574, was driving a 2002 Kawasaki west on
574 at about 6:52 p.m., when the accident
occurred. Mata and the motorcycle slid under
the eastbound tractor trailer driven by Richard
W. Taulbee, 46, 20933 Orchard Road, Milton,
Del., police said. The rear axle of the trailer was
destroyed and the motorcycle was totally
destroyed and burned in the collision.
Robbery suspect caught
A 33-year-old Plant City man suspected in
the attempted robbery of one drug store and
the robbery of another on Dec. 26 was caught
by police with cash and items taken from one
of the stores, police officials said.
Christopher Robert O'Brien, 1001 Alexander
St., No. 211, is charged with attempting to rob
the Walgreens store, 1802 James L. Redman
Parkway, at 10:54 a.m., but was turned away by
store employees, said Plant City Police spokes-
man Sgt. Jim Shultz. While officers Daniel Silva
and Tony Gamez were conducting an inter-
view with Walgreens store employees, another
call was received regarding an ongoing rob-
bery at the CVS Pharmacy, 403 N. Alexander
St.
Silva and Gamez responded and saw O'Brien
leaving the parking lot of the CVS, with wit-
nesses identifying him as the robber, Shultz
said. Police followed O'Brien to an area south
of Plant City High School and made an arrest
at that point. Police found a knife, used in the
CVS robbery, and an undetermined amount of
cash and store items taken in the robbery.
O'Brien is being held without bond at the
Hillsborough County Orient Road Jail, charged
with two counts of armed robbery, battery on a
police officer, felony fleeing to elude, driving
with a revoked license and making a bomb
threat.

It started with Betty Jones,
the wife of the then-principal
of Plant City High School,
whose granddaughter
attended Durant and wore to
-school a jacket embroidered
by Parrish Threads.
"Mr. Frost saw it and he
called me," Parrish said of the
founding principal of Durant
High School. "He said, 'Mrs.
Parrish, you don't know me,
but I saw a jacket that you did
and I need a jacket like that
one."
After that, he would bring
her shirts in the morning and
she would have them ready in
the afternoon.
"It was always my goal to do
work for Durant, to feel like I
was their embroiderer," Par-
rish said.
Essentially, she has become
the school's embroiderer, on
hand after most athletic events
with a sampling of her
extensive line. She has a folder
full of Durant designs, includ-
ing one created by David
Michael Smith, a drum major
for the school's Cougar Pride
marching band.
And as word- of-mouth has
spread, more schools are sign-
ing up for business, including
Plant City High School and
Dover, Lincoln, Bryan,
Cleveland, Cork, Knights,
Robinson, Trapnell and
Walden Lakes elementary
schools. Most of the orders are
for staff shirts for teachers and

"I can do business for any
school, but Durant's a very
special school to me," Parrish
said, noting that she also does
a lot of work for the Plant City
Strawberry Festival.
Parrish truly believes her
business is the work of God
and to prove her point she
talks about the time when she
needed another machine to
keep up with business.
Embroidery machines can
cost in the neighborhood of
$80,000.
Her father asked her what
she was going to do when the
need arose for another
machine, and she said: "If it's
the right thing, God will take
care of it. That's the way it
works."
Soon after she got a call
from California from a contact
telling her about a repossessed
machine in a warehouse in
Tampa. She went to the ware-
house and offered all the
money she could afford. Her
offer was turned down, but the
salesman called a few days
later and said, "Aren't you
going to counteroffer?"
Parrish said she would if she
could, but really, $11,000 was
all she could afford.
"Oh, I couldn't accept that,"
the man answered, and Par-
rish said she understood.
"He called me back a week
later and said he could let me
have the machine for that
price, but only if I picked it up
myself," Parrish said.
When Parrish reflects back
on her business, she is very
humbled by its success.
Ellen Davis, the company's
machine operator, said the
business has grown with no
advertising, other than word-
of-mouth promotion.
"If I had to pick one thing
why her business has grown it
would be pride, the pride she
takes in her work," agreed Par-
rish's stepsister Jean Pate, who
retired from the school system
after 34 years. Her last job was
as secretary for area director
Barbara Franques. "And she is
fair with people. She's not
here to make a fortune out of
everyone who walks through
the door. She works with you,
so it's affordable to you. She's
a good person, she really is."
Richard Rebman, Parrish's
brother and a retired postal
worker, also works with Par-
rish Threads.
"I'm amazed all the time
with all the business she gets,"
he said. "The thing that keeps
people coming back to her is
the quality of her work, and
she backs it up. She's kind of
an extraordinary person, I
think."

there was no better time to go than at Christ-
mastime. The 12 gals have been "making
music" together for over 10 years and started
out as a once a week neighborhood group of
moms "playing the silly dice game Bunco,"
said Cindy Gutowski.
All are Plant City residents (except Debbie
Goodwin, a former resident who now lives in
Tennessee) and have taken trips to the beach
together as well. This summer's beach trip was
canceled by a hurricane, so they decided to go
to the Big Apple.
"It was like a three-day slumber party. We're
all suffering from sleep deprivation," said
Cindy.
When will they be on the road again? And
where? They aren't sure, but you can bet after
more than 10 years there's not an outlaw in
the group, and they are still the best of friends.
It was great to see a few good men have
been added to the Market Restaurant Christ-
mas tree this week. Photos of Lance Cpl.
Charles Kelley (grandson of Elaine Fleming),
Kevin Hurst and Wesley Couch now grace the
tree.
Wesley's mom was standing next to me
when I was checking out the new additions.
Her son, a Marine, is in Bahrain. Not sure
where Kevin is (maybe someone will let me
know).
Our prayers continue to go out to these
courageous young guys and their families.
Evelyn Johnson tells me her grandson, Marine
Calab Johnson, has been home on leave, and
is headed back to Washington, D.C., this week.
It was old home week for four Florida State
fans.
Nancy McLean and her FSU grandchildren
donned T-shirts over the holiday. Jana Con-
nell, daughter of Jody and Judy Connell of
Ocala, is a junior majoring in family and child
science and early childhood education;
Richard McLean, son of Carolyn and Alex
McLean of Plant City, is a junior majoring in
history, and his sister, Katie, is the second year
master's program for urban and regional
planning, public administration and emer-
gency management.
Nancy is one of the friendly faces you see at
the Courier/Tribune office downtown when
you first walk in the door.
Plant City has a darn good middle hitter,
and we happily share her with Northeastern
University in Boston.
Freshman Brittany Eukovich, daughter of
Walden Lake residents Bob and Sherlyn
Eukovich, was recently named to the Ameri-
can Eastern Conference All Rookie Volleyball
team. Congratulations!
Looks like sister, Stephanie, a student at
Durant High School, is going to follow suit -
she's on the volleyball team there.
Plant City's Bunco group hit the road again, this
time to New York City to visit such landmarks
as the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, above.
I love the innocence of kids and many think
in this computer generation it's harder than
ever to keep them that way.
But on Christmas Eve I had a delightful
experience when my 4-year-old granddaugh-
ter called and said, "Daddy is tracking Santa
on the computer we are watching him and
his reindeer!"
In the background, the 6-year-old, who is
just now beginning to question the reality of
Santa, said "It's true! Rudolph is real- he is a
real reindeer and we are watching him in the
sky on Daddy's computer."
Well, they carried that computer memory
with them to their Nanny's house in Naples
and after a Christmas Eve dinner, my daughter
and son-in-law took them home. But the little
girls didn't want to go in the house-they were
afraid Santa had made it all the way to their
house and was inside putting gifts under the
tree.
They didn't want to disturb him during such
an important event. It's no wonder the
Psalmist King David said "children are a
heritage of the Lord."
I wish you lots of blessings for the coming
year. It would be a real pleasure to hear from

SHARP CUTS
S ome truly exceptional
performances were
turned in by our local
athletes in 2004. Taking a look
at the year past, which we do
in this space right around this
time, brings to mind some
names right away.
Derrick Hallback and Matt
Stwan were just incredible
this fall, finishing as Hills-
borough County's top two
rushers in football. Anyone
who saw Hallback in action
knows that kid deserves a spot
in a Division I football team's
backfield some day soon.
Sportswriters more than
anyone else can get transfixed
on numbers so much that it
almost becomes pedestrian to
throw out a line like "Hallback
went for 256 yards and three
touchdowns" like it's no big
thing. So you really had to see
Hallback in action speed,
amazing moves, toughness
always on display to appre-
ciate his season.
Hallback put up some huge
outings later in the year, and
this was not against mediocre
competition. He went for
more than 300 yards in big
wins over Durant and George
Jenkins. It's a shame the
DAREK
SHARP
Raiders finished 6-4 so
Hallback did not get a chance
to strut his stuff in the
playoffs. Then again it was
probably all for naught -
literally. Plant City would've
had to get past Lakeland,
which wasn't about to happen
for anyone as the Dread-
naughts went 15-0 all the way
to a state title.
In fact, it was Durant that
gave Lakeland its closest
game all year, 21-18. Stwan
went for more than 100 yards
and two scores in that game
and was the big force for the
Cougar offense. Durant went
7-3 a year after reaching the
state semis, but a painfully
close OT defeat against East
Bay kept the Cougars out of
the playoffs.
Next year I have a feeling
things will be different, as
Plant City and Durant are
both in manageable four-
team districts, just no longer
in the same one together.
Hopefully the Raiders can
find someone that comes
close to filling Hallback's
shoes, but that's asking a lot.
While Hallback and Stwan
are both on the way out of
high school, a freshman star-
in-the-making came on the
scene in swimming. Plant
City's Stephanie Barker made
it all the way to the state meet
and there wasn't even a
question if she'd make it
there. It may seem a lot to say,
but expect a state title or two
from Barker before she's
finished gracing the halls at
PCHS.
And Durant had a couple of
freshman both reach the state
meet in diving, as Kaylee
Doback and Chris Plante both
won the regional meet.
The best team performance
I witnessed came down in
Fort Lauderdale, when
Durant put a stunning display
on against the nation's sixth-
best girls soccer team Park-
land Douglas. Gabi Rivera and
Mandy Anton pounced for
early goals as the Cougars,
who frankly had been shaky
in previous big-state appear-
ances, bolted to a 2-0 lead.
Right before half, Douglas
scored a big goal however,
and then early in the second
half Durant defensive leader
Emily Stutzman went out with

lost a 3-2 heartbreaker. But
the Cougars were able to
reach the state finals for the
first time ever, and in fact
probably put on the best
showing in the history of the
program, despite it being in
defeat.
Most impressive athlete
over a four-year career? I
challenge anyone to argue
with Shaun Young, who
finished a brilliant tennis
career with his third state
championship, coming last
April in doubles with partner
Brian Walsh.
If I had to pick a theme, I'd
have to go with the inordinate
amount of coaching changes
at Durant and Plant City.
Some people that were
inextricably linked to their
schools hung 'em up: Plant
City longtime volleyball coach
Evangeline "Flash" MacDon-
ald, and always-been-there
coaches Gary Graham, Gary
Jordan and Dick Sheffield at
Durant. Then there was Jeff
Shotwell, who started out as
the Durant girls coach, then
went to lead the Plant City
boys in 2003-04 before
returning to coach the Durant
boys this year!
But after all the shakeups,
including the end of seeing
towel-chomping Gary Roper
as the PCHS girls basketball
coach, both schools are in
great hands all across the
board. Right now for example
it looks like Durant's wrestling
team, energized by former
Brandon star Dennis Kitko, is
on the way the school's best
season ever in the sport.
I'm sure with the new
blood, in some cases old "new
blood" like Gary Meyer at
Plant City, we'll have a lot
more good year-ending
material, for year-ends to
come.

Though he said he never
expected to be painting such
religious content, Briggs, 56,
said the commission has made
for some of the most gratifying
work he's ever done.
"When you get back and
look at it, you feel like you've
accomplished something," he
said.
Living on a love of art
He always knew he'd be an
artist.
"But I never thought about
making a living out of it,"
Briggs said. "I kind of evolved
into it."
Born in Hamilton, Ohio,
Briggs grew up in Naples with
his parents Morgan and
Mildred, who owed and
tended to the family grocery
store. Briggs said they were
shocked when he announced
he would go to school for art.
Now he's a nationally
known artist, particularly for
his landscape scenes. His work
has been displayed from the
federal courthouse in Miami
to the Rotunda in Washington
D.C.
Briggs earned his under-
graduate degree in painting,
then a master's of fine arts
degree in painting and history.
He moved to Plant City with
his wife, Betty; a columnist for
The Courier, and set up a vis-
iting artist program at Cork
Elementary using money from
an endowment. The goal was
to help students "see artwork
from beginning to end and not
just as a finished product," he
said.
After six years, he landed a
job as Artist in Residence at an
Ocala community college.
While working on a mural
project in Ocala, he met the
Rev. Patrick Joseph Francis
O'Doherty of Queen Of Peace.

old cruciform style with an
apse and nave. The room seats
1,700 and has ceilings as high
as 60 feet.
"I'm essentially a teacher,
and I love using visual aids,"
O'Doherty said during a tele-
phone interview this week.
"Part of my job as a teacher is
to show that Christianity is
firmly rooted in Judaism."
B riggs recommended a
friend and student of his, but
because of her age she was
unable to undertake the
physical demands of creating
art on such a large scale. Briggs
decided to take the job.
The church is using a
combination of the paintings
by Briggs and by other artists
as well as stained glass to visu-,
ally depict on the sanctuary's
outer walls the highlights of
the Old Testament. So far,
Briggs has contributed some
of the most important of those
moments: Moses descending
from Mount Sinai with the
Ten Commandments; the
prophet Elijah riding up to
Heaven in a chariot drawn by
two horses; Cain slaying Abel;
and Noah calling the animals
to the ark.
And now "Abraham and
Isaac." Briggs, who attends
First United Methodist Church
of Plant City, will complete the
commission next year with
"The Wisdom of King Solo-
mon."
O'Doherty said his congre-
gation of roughly 7,000 "seem
awfully proud" of the unique
undertaking, often bringing in
visitors to show off the church.
And it was no inexpensive
endeavor. Though Briggs pre-
ferred not to disclose the
amount of the commission,
it's costing the church thou-
sands of dollars it has been,
after all, a full-time job for
Briggs.
O'Doherty said Briggs' work
has "said what I wanted it to
say."
"It's nice to be working with
a man who also happens to be
a man of faith," O'Doherty
said. "He believes what he's
painting, and that's impor-
tant."
Though Briggs' father came
from a family of preachers,
farmers and railroad workers
in Kentucky, Briggs admits he
wasn't exactly a Biblical
scholar. Since the commis-
sion, he said he picks it up
more often.
"It seems I may have
become a preacher in a funny
sort of way," he said.
A sizeable challenge
During the commission,
Briggs has spent countless
hours atop scaffolding in a
vast, third floor space in the
1914 Plant City High School
Community Center that the
East Hillsborough Historical
Society loaned to him for a
studio.
The ceilings are high
enough that Briggs can stretch
the huge pieces of canvas, set
up the scaffolding and go to

work. The process, however,
starts long before that, with
hours of research. Briggs stud-
ies written accounts as well as
visual depictions, in the form
of prints and engravings, to
get a feel for the moment he
will create. In the end, though,
he adds his own touches to
make the piece unique.
"I don't want to do the same
thing over," he said.
As with each painting,
Briggs used local people for
models. He creates a scale ver-
sion from which to work, then
attacks the huge canvas using
a grid system, painting one
square foot at a time. He
sketches with a piece of char-
coal, then fills in with oil
paint.
The painting's even larger
size made for a technical chal-
lenge. Briggs created a setup
that allows him to work from
the top of the canvas down
and then roll the completed
portion at an angle across the
ceiling. It means long hours
on his feet and climbing up
and down the scaffold.
Some days, he leaves the
studio knowing something's
not right. One of the more dif-
ficult aspects of working on
such large pieces is getting the
size and location of the sub-
jects just right to create a life-
like depiction. "You just keep
making adjustments until you
feel better about it," he said.
Even then, he doesn't truly
know the finished product.
That doesn't happen until
after it makes the 100-mile trip
north in a truck loaned by
friend Lou McGrath, is
unrolled and put in its place.
Delivery for "Abraham and
Isaac" is slated for Jan. 13.
"It's only when it's hung
that it shows what it- is," he
said.
The East Hillsborough His-
torical Society is hosting an

the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa, said the
office agreed with the early release.
"(Cotnoir) did his time and his case is
closed," Cole said.
Cotnoir was one of several officers impli-
cated in the corruption case, charged with vio-
lating the constitutional rights of people
charged with felonies.
During Cotnoir's trial, Eggers contended that
Cotnoir "was not a major player" in the investi-
gation and that Cotnoir thought he was doing
his "duty as a police officer, however
misguided."
After pleading guilty, Cotnoir testified twice
in front of a grand jury as part of the investiga-
tion. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Del Fuoco
prosecuted several of the cases.
Robert David Dixon, the senior officer
charged during the initial investigation, served
seven months in the same Pensacola prison as
Cotnoir. Former officer Shawn Corgan pleaded
guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the
constitutional rights of a citizen and was given
six months house arrest on Jan 12, 2001.
Eggers insists the timing of Cotnoir's release
was based on the good heartedness of Perez
and Lazzara, but he said Cotnoir never deserved
the sentence he was originally given.
"Mr. Cotnoir tried to assist the government
in the corruption case being waged against
members of the Plant City Police Department.
Jeffrey Del Fuoco, be damned. Justice was
finally done in this case," Eggers said.
Del Fuoco. said he was "personally pleased"
that Cotnoir was released and able to to spend
the holidays with his family.
"That's not to say that I don't think he did
wrong," he said. "As the prosecutor in this case,
I think he did enough time."
"I am ecstatic about Armand's release," said
Mayor Mike Sparkman. "He should never have
been sent to prison in the first place. The
federal system failed us all when a prosecutor is
allowed to be so abusive of the system. I am
elated that Cotnoir is home with his family
again. I stand behind him. I believe in him. And
I am proud of him."
Del Fuoco'said the comments by Sparkman
and Eggers were "off base" but declined to
elaborate.
Eggers said it was his understanding that
Cotnoir already had employment lined up and
that he was anxious to get back to a normal life
with his family.

continuous change. Well, so what, you might
say. Well, this: Often when people talk about
America, they are talking about an America
that no longer exists except in their memory.
It's very important that we always deal with
the here and now and not with the past or
some imagined but nonexistent future. The
United States in the 1940s was literally the
arsenal of democracy. Today, we lack that
capacity. The America that exists today is
quite different from the country we were 'born
into, the country in which we came of age.
Two other hints from general semantics are
the phrases "as far as I know" and "at this
time." To keep "as far as I know" in mind
when we say something is to recognize we
have limited knowledge. Nobody knows every-
thing about anything. To keep in mind the
phrase "at this time" is to remind ourselves
that what we know today might not be true
tomorrow.
Still another important tip is to know the
difference between fact and opinion. A fact is
a statement about reality that is verifiable by
others. If I tell you that city hall is at Main and
Elm streets, you can go to Main and Elm
streets and verify that for yourself. If I tell you
that city hall is ugly, you can't verify that. An
opinion is an evaluation of reality and is
always necessarily subjective. I see ugliness;
you see beauty. It depends entirely on our
own criteria for judging beauty.
There is a difference between informed
opinion and uninformed opinion. We often
hear people state as facts opinions that.we
know are not based on knowledge. Some of
them are ridiculous, as when people speak as
if they knew the inner thoughts of somebody
they've never seen, much less met. I hear
people say that Arab textbooks teach anti-
Semitism. Have they ever seen an Arab
textbook? No. Do they read Arabic? No. Then
what they are really saying is that somebody
else told them that Arab textbooks teach anti-
Semitism.
Quite often in this age of propaganda,
propaganda gets absorbed into people's
minds and then repeated as fact. We should
always distinguish between what we know,
what we don't know and what somebody else
told us. Korzybski's "Science and Sanity,"
published in 1933, is heavy reading, but there
are popular works on general semantics by the
late S.I. Hayakawa that are delightful to read.

described as, "The life
abundant."
These past 12 months have
been abundant in every sense.
Not easy, but full; exciting,
bountiful. Not the kind of year
we would have planned
ourselves, but marked by
serendipity and grace. Not
lucrative financially, but
undoubtedly profitable in
substance.
Best of all is the fact that we
are nowhere near done. The
hymn writer Adelaide Anne
Procter wrote: "I thank you,
Lord, that you have kept the
best in store. We have
enough, yet not too much to
long for more: A yearning for
a deeper peace not known
before."
