Staffing concerns plague NOFD

District says

financial woes

deter applicants

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

The third and appar-
ently ultimate defeat of
the North Okaloosa Fire
District's quest to increase
user fees has had the effect
of deterring potential fire-
fighters from applying to
serve the district, accord-
ing.to the district.
At its March 19 meet-
ing, commissioners voted
to ratify the results of the
election in which 88.94 per-
cent of voters were against
the referendum.
"I'd say we got clob-
bered," observed Board
Chairman Will Reeves
wryly
The district's financial
situation is of sufficient
concern that Board Secre-
tary/Treasurer Julie Slezia

will be meeting with Chief
Ed Cutler to discuss man-
uing options.
"We anticipate some
crew leaving a district that
has said it does not support
them," Slezia said.
Reeves reported two
NOFD firefighters have
taken full time jobs in an-
other district to supple-'
ment their NOFD incomes,
which the district says are
the county's lowest. How-
ever, the men would like to
remain full time at NOFD
as well, essentially working
two full-time jobs.
"They're two of the most
experienced individuals we
have on the force," Reeves
said.
Slezia questioned the
firefighters' loyalties, par-
ticularly if an emergency
situation arose requiring
all staff to report to duty.
"We don't have the luxu-
ry of going out and picking
up experienced firefight-
ers," Cutler said.
"The last hiring we did,
nobody put in an applica-
tion," added Deputy Chief
Danny Worrells.
Slezia's chief concern

was NOFD policy stating
that full-time firefighters
must declare in writing
that NOFD will be their
"recall site" in the event
of an emergency.
Worrells assured the
board there has never
been a mandatory recall
in NOFD history.
"In Ivan, it was volun-
tary," he said.
"I spent 20 years in
one of the most inflexible
organizations there is
the Army but even
then there were exemp-
tions to policy," said com-
missioner Frank Sauls.
S "I say accommodate
them," Sauls said. "I sug-
gest we make an excep-
tion of policy in this in-
stance for a time period
or at the discretion of the
chief."
The board then voted
unanimously to direct
Cutler to temporarily cre-
ate an exemption to the
policy that would be in ef-
fect for a year.

Other business'
Other topics discussed
by the North Okaloosa
Fir6 Districtboard of com-
missioners at the March
19 meeting included:
During his Chief's
Report, Cutler reported
receiving a $29,620 equip-

ment grant. He soon will
submit a grant request to
purchase a badly needed
class A pumper truck.
Critical needs are two
new fire engines and
more manning, the chief
reported.
Because of aging or
broken equipment, NOFD
has had to consolidate
operations at the airport
and John King Road sta-
tions, temporarily shut-
tering two other stations,
the chief reported.
A public referen-
dum passed by voters in
2002 was changed by the
board's attorney at that
time from saying com-
missioners "may" receive
a stipend for their service
to they "shall" receive the
money.
"It sticks in my craw,"
said'Slezia, who received
$500 per month as both
the board's secretary and,
its treasurer.
Board Attorney Toni
Craig advised that it
would take another refer-
endum to change the lan-
guage, but in the mean-
time, "Once it's paid,
there's nothing to stop
you from turning around
and giving it back."

B-I-N-G-Ordinance

in play at Crestview

council meeting

Kyle Wright
Crestview News Bulletin

The rules of bingo got
complicated Monday night
during the Crestview City
Council meeting.
The council unanimous-
ly approved a motion to di-
rect city staff to review the
city's bingo ordinance and
propose changes that could
allow Crestview Bingo to
continue its operations
within city limits.
Local attorney Dixie
Powell and Crestview Bin-
go Operator Philip Masino
said games at Crestview
Bingo, on U.S. Highway 90
on the west side of the city,
netted more than $150,000
for eight local charitable
and service organizations
last year.
"That's a significant
amount of money," Powell'
said. "The problem is, the
business will be closed due
to a private lease arrange-
ment and have to move into
city limits, and the current
ordinance is outdated."
Crestview Bingo says it
would not be able to oper-
ate at the same level under
current city ordinances.
State statutes allow two
bingo sessions per organi-
zation per week but do not
limit the total number of
sessions per facility. Crest-
view ordinances allow two
total bingo sessions per fa-
cility per week.
City Attorney Ben Holley
.concurred that under the
current ordinance, Crest-
view Bingo would not be
able to operate in the same
fashion if it relocated within
city limits. Holley also ques-
tioned whether Crestview
Bingo's operations comply
with state statutes. He not-
ed state statutes require
members of the benefiting
organizations to conduct
the bingo games and ques-
tioned if Crestview Bingo
collects a fair rent value for
the facility.
"There are all kinds of
things not keeping with
what the statute says," Hol-
ley said.
Masinb replied that in-
kind members of the orga-
nizations can run the bingo
games and said the rent
collected also covers full
operation of the building.
About two-thirds of the
30 people at the meeting
represented organizations
that benefit from the bingo
games.

Other business
The bingo discussion
became necessary when
the council unanimously
approved a second read-
ing and adoption of an or-
dinance that annexes 2.58
acres of land west of Mar-
tin Street and between Old
Milligan Road and James
Lee Boulevard, as request-
ed by the Southern Boys
Investment Group. The or-
dinance provides access to
the Southern Boys' planned
development.
Crestview Bingo says it
has been asked to vacate
its current location within
the newly annexed area.
The council unani-
mously approved a motion
to support a proclamation
drafted by the Okalbosa
County Board of County
Commissioners in' support
of the F-35 bed down at Eg-
lin Air Force Base. (See the
full proclamation at www.
crestviewbulletin.com).
The council will.hold
a public meeting and open
house at 4 p.m. April 13 to
consider the Department of
Transportation's State Road
85 Access Management
Plan. A special meeting to
conduct a public hearing on
the plan would take place at
5 p.m. April 27.
The council would not
have authority to defeat
the plan. City Administra-
tive Services Director Mike
Wing said the DOT likely
hopes the council will adopt
a resolution in support of
the plan after hearing pub-
lic input.
The council by a 4-1
vote tabled a discussion to
determine a formal name
for the city's new building
at Old Spanish Trail Parlk
Charles Baugh recom-
mended naming the build-
ing after formal mayor
George Whitehurst and
naming the auditorium in
the building after Preston
Medley, a Baker graduate
who was killed in Afghani-
stan in 2008. Linda Parker
opposed the decision to
table, but noted she did not
oppose honoring Whitehu-
rst or Medley.
The council unani-
mously reappointed Shan-
non Hayes to another term
on the Board of Adjust-
ment.

The piece may be "Un-

winner for Crestview artist

Stringfellow, a junior 'in

The category includes

Stringfellow was pleas-

"I was really shocked
because I thought the most
I would get was honorable

time preceding spring
break. We still have a lot
of instruction to accom-
plish this school year, with
one-quarter of the year
still ahead of us' We are
especially proud of how
hard our students and
staff worked leading up to
FCAT and are confident
that they will work equally
hard the remainder of the
year.
Spring is one of our
busiest times for everyone.

Between spring sports,
band contests, chorus con-
tests, Odyssey of the Mind,
JROTC competitions and
other activities, well over
half of our 6-12 students
are involved.in some type
of school activity on al-
most a daily basis. One of
our Odyssey of the Mind
teams will be participating
in state competition in Or-
lando during spring break.
We were also happy to join
with the local Kiwanis Club
and member Bob Allen on
March 18 to recognize doz-
ens of middle school stu-
dents who had brought up
grades (BUGS). We appre-
ciate the way our comnmu-
nity supports all our efforts

also in order for female

We are especially
proud of the progress we

less than half that amount.

reached the highest level
of professionalism in their
field.
After an exhaustive ex-
amination of their teaching
philosophy and lesson de-
livery, the teachers earned

TEAM OF THE YEAR: The Reading Leadership Team from Crestview High School has been named the
Okaloosa County School District's Team of the Year. Superintendent Alexis Tibbetts presented the
award during a recent faculty meeting. Team members are Kelly Hayes, Sharon Steen, Ella Shaw, Julie
Boretsky, Rhonda Day and Kim Hughson. Tibbetts and CHS Principal Ed Coleman are pictured with the
team. The team consisted of one person from each school department, including the media specialist
and literacy coach. The group was tasked with deciding what teachers could do to enhance success in
every class. The team recommended the implementation of tutors in reading classes and small group
instruction. They believe the results helped Crestview High School earn its recent "A" rating by the
Florida Department of Education.

HUBB, UB
Here is a sampling of what people had to say about
recent north Okaloosa County news topic. Comments
were collected from the crestviewbulletin.com Web
site.

Topic: This unsigned letter from "City Taxpay-
er" was submitted to the News Bulletin and desig-
nated for the "Hubbub" section:
Mr. Editor,
You don't seem to notice that you are providing free
advertising. If the' attorney in, the attorney section was
just talking legal stuff that would be one thing. But
now he is an expert in telling us how to vote. I live in
the city. He does not, and yet you let him tell me how
to vote and for free! Is this the Legal Section or
the Political Section. .
I have an idea. Why not give that space (free ad-
vertising) for non-profit organizations each and every
week. That is done on radio for public announce-
ments, community events, etc. That way your paper
would be doing a community service not free adver-
tising.
If you do not want to do that then maybe you would
ask other local attorneys to participate in the "attor-
ney section." We actually have some who have been
practicing law for more than a year.
(You probably won't print this in the paper because
it would reveal to all readers that you provide free
space for private business purposes. Do editors take
ethics courses?)
Response from News Bulletin Editor Kyle Wright:
As previously stated, any person at any time is wel-
come to submit opinion pieces related to north Oka-
loosa County news. As also previously stated, no one
was "asked" to write anything related to the recent
local elections for our opinion page. We do provide
space (free advertising) for non-profit organizations
each and every week (actually, twice a week) in
"What's Happening" section: 'This week, it is on page
B6.

Topic- Duke Field runway gets a makeover
They are supposed to be building housing quarters,
shopping facilities, etc. all around Duke Field. I don't
think this housing area could even come close to ac-
commodating all of the troops arid their families. We
are going to see tremendous growth, especially in
Crestview. The increase in population will also stimu-
late the local businesses. Of course, the traffic conges-
tion will be the downside.
S,
I wonder if they will also create a shortcut road
through the reservation for military members to drive
(on) to perhaps help alleviate traffic for civilians?

Topic: Citizens Against More Taxes committee
to host "Tea Party" on April 15, asking people "to
come and let your elected officials know that you
are tired of the waste and abuse at all levels of our
government."
If you care and have the time, come to the gather-
ing at the Veterans Memorial in front of the court-
house on April 15 at 4 p.m. We'll let the elected poli-
ticians know we are watching what they do. Have
a glass of tea on our committee. We won't have big
speeches but we would welcome your ideas on how to
curtail government spending, We can't do much about
the mess in Washington, but we can certainly influ-
ence the local situation.

Topic: Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce
celebrates grand opening of new building
It should have been called a "grand" opening be-
cause of how much was spent.

PASSING SHOTS

We're playing the percentages

Believe it or not, I appreciate
any criticism that comes my way.
I would much rather have you
tell me what you do not like about
the Crestview News Bulletin and
giving us a chance to make im-
provements rather than you spar-
ing my feelings and not telling us
why you halted your subscription or
your advertising.
Two people took the time to
provide some specific feedback on
my "No one left to cover Crestview"
column in the March 11 edition of
the Crestview News Bulletin.
Neither person liked the column,
which is fine.
One of the reasons given for not
liking the column, if correct, would
not have .been fine.
Both writers implied the Crest-
view News Bulletin does not pro-
vide enough coverage of Crestview
and instead focuses, on the outlying
areas.
I did a bit of research to see just
what we've been covering.
Our Web site, www.crestview-

.bulletin.com, has
most of our stories
from the past year
or so, about when I
rejoined the news-
paper.
I did a site search
SI T for all of the stories
KYLE WRIGHT with "Crestview," all
(850) 682-6524 of the stories with
"Baker," all of the
stories with "Milligan," and so on.
Here's how the story numbers
broke down at noon on March 18.
(The actual numbers change by the
minute) ,
10,200 stories about Crestview
(79 percent)
1,567 stories about Baker, in-
cluding stories about Milligan and
Blackman (12 percent)
914 stories about Laurel Hill,,
including stories about Dorcas (7
percent)
198 stories about Holt (2 per-
cent)
To see how those story break-
downs compared to the actual

populations of the communities, I
looked up the populations for the
corresponding ZIP codes on www.
city-data.com.
Here's how the area population
breaks down
43,557 people in the two Crest-
view ZIP codes (79 percent)
4,885 people in the Baker ZIP
code (9 percent)
3,734 people in the Laurel Hill
ZIP code (7 percent)
2,661 people in the Holt ZIP
code (5 percent)
I'm not claiming our story cov-
erage breakdown is as precise as
these numbers indicate. You can
get different percentages both ways
every hour. I will claim our story
coverage breakdown is pretty close
to what it should be.
We're just playing the percentages.

Superintendent: School

district faces sharp budget cuts

Okaloosa County
School District Super-
intendent of Schools Dr.
Alexis Tibbetts posted this
message on the school
district's Web site
During the school dis-
trict's fiscal challenges,
we will do our best to
maintain high perform-
ing schools by continu-
ing our work in closing
'the achievement gap,
emphasizing early child
education, supporting'
struggling readers and
.expanding math, science
and technology programs.
All employees are
working hard to ensure
that students feel the
least possible impact of
these budget cuts. Dur-
ing these difficult times,
as the economy weakens
and revenue decreases,
we must look for ways
to balance our budget
and attempt to con-
tinue to provide the best
education possible for all
learners. The economic
situation.may get worse
before it gets better, but
we must maintain our
academic focus and not
eliminate programs that
are critical to student
success. It is extremely
difficult for educators,
School Board members,

and administrators to cut
programs that they have
worked hard to build, but
cuts must be made. These
decisions will be made
with input from citizens,
teachers, administrators,
parents, and students.
While any cuts'are
harmful, it must remain
our mission to ensure that
all students have an equal
opportunity to succeed
at school. This comes
through high quality
teaching, parent involve-
ment, enhanced instruc-
tion with professional
development and hard
work from the students.
Despite a troubled econ-
omy, we must prepare all
students to be productive
contributors in the 21st
century.
Budget projections
from t>. state for the 2009-
2010 school year are still
unknown. Without revenue
enhancement, the antici-
pated reductions to educa-
tion funding could reach
as high as 18 percent.
Revenue collections in the
state of Florida decline
daily The state's General
Revenue Estimating Con-
ference was scheduled
for March 13. This will es-
tablish the budget figures
from which the 2009-2010

General Appropriations
Act will be developed. At
this time, few details are
known about the impact
the federal economic stim-
ulus plan will have on the
budget. At best, the plan
will provide some relief,
but will in no way fill the,
hole created by the cur-
rent downturn in Florida's
economy.
We ask for your pa-
tience during this budget
process. We will update
you often as the budget
becomes more defined
during this Legislative
Session. If you have sug-
gestions, you are welcome
to e-mail me. As with
most things, the devil
is in the details. Some
cost-saving measures
suggested could require
union negotiations or
statutory change. We will
consider everything you
suggest, but some cre-
ative ideas are.not within
our purview. Most impor-
tantly, we will keep our
focus on our mission of
doing everything we can
to provide the best educa-
tion possible for Okaloosa
children.
Thank you.
Alexis. Tibbetts, Ed. D.
Superintendent of
Schools

WHAT HAS BEEN
DONE SO FAR?
*The current cuts
come on the heels of
last year's budget cuts,
which had a significant
impact on every school
in our county.
Since the 2007-
08 school year, the
Okaloosq County School
District has already cut
approximately $24
million in spending
Here are some of the
ways the district and the
schools have cut costs:
Restructured and
downsized the school-
district office;
Closed two
elementary-schools;
Closed the Central
Kitchen;
Re-routed buses
and consolidated stops;
Implemented an
Energy-Management
Plan;
Greatly reduced
overtime;
Reduced travel;
Reduced the total
number of personnel;
I* Reduced the
number of electives.

ANN SPANN I Crestview News Bulletin
WORKING HIS WAY BACK: Ben Bates
took part in the Emerald Coast
Golf Tour Heritage Plantation
Classic last week. Bates has
played in 121 PGA Tour events.

Randy Dickson
Crestview News Bulletin

LAUREL HILL Gary Rusnak and
Ben Bates know what it is to hear
the cheering galleries of a big
PGA Tour golf tournament.
Both golfers have spent the
better part of their lives chasing
the dream of fame and fortune on
the links, so it might have been
a surprise to some to see their
names on the leaderboard at the
Heritage Classic of the Emerald
Coast Golf Tour.
Rusnak, who now lives in Des-
tin, spent several years on the
Asian tour, where he was a top
draw.
Bates, a Pace native, has
bounced back and fourth between
the PGA and Nationwide tours
for the better part of the last 20
years.

Bates often plays the Emerald
Coast Tour to prepare himself for
bigger events. *
"I have some tournaments
coming up on the Nationwide
Tour, and I needed some competi-
tion," he said. "I hadn't played in,
about four months competitively. I
have a little rust on the old sticks,
especially on my putter.
,"I figured this would be a good
opportunity to get in some good
competition and maybe get my
game in shape to do .good on the
'Nationwide Tour this year."
The layout at Heritage Planta-
tion and the Heritage Classic was
a perfect challenge for Bates as
he readies himself for the Nation-
wide events.
"If you step to the back tees, it
has a long course," he said. "It's
a great course. They could host a

Teens: Enjoy spring break without drinking

I don't have to tell parents or
students spring break starts when
school gets out Friday.
It's time for a week of fun in
the sun and getting away from the
books before the stretch
run of the school year.
I hope all of our young
people, athletes and non-
athletes alike, will use
some common sense while
enjoying their break.
I've had to write too
many columns about kids NORT
who lost their lives in the ZC
last few months, as have Randy
my friends at our Florida Freedom
sister newspaper, the Northwest
Florida Daily News.
One common factor in some of
the deaths one that could easily
be avoided is the use of alcohol.
Maybe it's not my place to lec-
ture young people on the consump-
tion of alcohol. Perhaps that's a job
left to parents and teachers.
That said, I'm writing this
because I care about our young
people. If one kid thinks about not
getting in the car with a friend who
is driving after having too much
to drink, then I've accomplished

m
'H
IN
Di

something that might save a life.
I might not be the person to lec-
ture on the evils of alcohol because
I have never knowingly tasted as
much as a beer.
By the same token, that
admission might make me
the best person to lecture
on the evils of alcohol.
I know what it's like
not to be included with the
"cool" group because I don't
drink. I know how painful it
END cah be to feel left out when
IE all you want to do is fit in,
ckson but any so-called friend who
wants you to drink to prove you
belong isn't much of a friend.
I know that fora teenager read-
ing this column, drinking any alco-
holic beverage is against the law.
I don't have the statistics in
front of me. If I did, they are sta-
tistics every kid has heard before.
Those statistics would indicate
drinking increases the probability
of having an accident.
I also know nobody ever be-
came an alcoholic without taking a
first drink. And nobody who takes
that first drink can be certain they
won't become an alcoholic.

There is so much of life that
can be enjoyed without being high
or drunk. And for the shy kid who
feels he or she needs a little cour-
age in a bottle, that's not really
courage at all.
A serious athlete wants to take
care of his or her body. Drinking
isn't the best way to keep yourself
at the peak of physical condition.
And whether you want to ad-
mit it or not, when you decide to
become a high school athlete, you
assume the position of role model.
Believe it or not, there is a kid in
elementary school who watches
your every move. So yes, you are
that role model.
In the end, drinking alcohol is
an adult decision. Whether you
or someone else is harmed by
your actions, there are still adult
consequences that go along with
drinking.
Believe me, you'll be grown
quick enough. In the meantime,
enjoy your spring breakby keeping
it sober and safe.

Post your thoughts on Randy's
column by posting at note at

PGA tournament tomorrow if they want-
ed to.
"The course is in great shape now. If
you get off the beaten path out here, you
are in trouble. There's not much chipping
out here. The tour plays some courses
that are more wide open, but they also
play some that are very similar to this
where you best be hitting it straight."
After spending almost a quarter of a
century traveling the world to play golf,
Rusnak said he is enjoying life out of the
fast lane.
"This is my hometown tour, my area
that I've lived in 12 years," he said. "I just
love to compete and play.
"It's different, obviously. The money's
not as good, but the camaraderie and the
competition is good. I played today with
two guys (Kyle Sapp and Nick Rousey)
that really played well. There is a lot of
good competition everywhere."

Don't think Rusnak is hanging up the
clubs any time soon.
"I'm 46, and I'm trying to hang in
there until I can give the senior tour a
shot in four years," he said. "That's what
my plan is, anyway.
"I played everywhere, and the last
nine (years) were in Asia. I just wore my-
self out with travel, I'm just trying to take
a little bit of a break."
Emerald Coast Tour Director Geno
Celano offered another take as to why
guys like Bates and Rusnak continue to
play the Emerald Coast Tour.
"It's just extremely difficult to keep
your card on the PGA tour," Celano said.
"Guys want to continue to play profes-
sional golf, and sometimes you have to
move backwards to go back forward.
"It's worth staying in the game be-
cause there is so much money in the
game that they keep grinding."

t Encore azaleas: More blooms, more often

Nothing signals spring in the South
like the reds, pinks and whites of azaleas
in full bloom. Nearly every yard has one.
But the glory fades fast.
That is,, it did until the late 1990s.
Twenty-eight Encore azaleas have
been released since 1998. Robert E.
Buddy Lee, an avid collector and azalea
breeder from Independence, La.,
initiated an azalea breeding program to
incorporate fall blooming characteristics
into a winter hardy, evergreen azalea.
He started his work in the 1980s,
working out of his home with the goal of
bringing the beauty of spring azaleas to
other seasons.
As the project grew, he teamed up.
with Flowerwood Nursery to continue the
process that would bring Encore azaleas
to the public. Lee selected the seedling
that would be named Autumn Amethyst
in 1986 but did not receive the plant
patent until 1998.
So far, there are two series of Encore
azaleas: the Autumn series and the
Southern series. The Autumn series
can be grown in Zone 7 or warmer. The
Southern series was designed for even
warmer climates. They can be grown in
Zone 8 or warmer. The Southern varieties
are especially good for the Florida
panhandle and the Mississippi and
Alabama gulf coasts.
The fall flowering trait primarily
comes from Rhododendron oldhamii

hybrid called Karens, a cross between
Hinodegini, the old Kurume variety, and
R. yedoensis var poukhanense, the
Korean azalea.
Encore azaleas are available in an
array of colors, growth forms and bloom
characteristics. New hybrids provide the
traditional spring display during March
and April. They also bloom again in the
fall, usually during September or eatly
October.
They reliably bloom in the spring and
fall but are never quite as covered with a
complete carpet of flowers as you might
see on a traditional azalea.
Encore azaleas have the same cultural
requirements as traditional azaleas.
They should have a pH between 5.0 and
5.5; a well-drained organic soil and water
during the summer months. Bloom is
heavier in brighter locations, with areas
having morning sun and afternoon shade
probably the best. If pruning is required
to control size, thin and shear them in the
spring just after bloom.
Sheila Dunning is the commercial
horticulture agent II for the Okaloosa
County'UFJIFAS Extension.

"Truth and Beauty: A
Friendship" by Ann Patch-
ett (CD 920 Pat). I listened
to this book on CD and was
deeply touched by it. In this
heartrending memoir Ann
Patchett tells the story of her
friendship with Lucy Grealy,
an acclaimed writer herself.
Their story begins when they
meet in college. Lucy's face
is disfigured from a cancer
that took her jaw when she
was nine. It takes 30 opera-
tions to give her a semblance
of a face. Blessed with a tal-
ent for words and meaning
she writes the book'Auto-
biography of a Face" and
becomes an instant success.
"Truth and Beauty" is about
their friendship and what
it means to love someone
unconditionally even though
they don't share the same
blood (A feat I have not expe-
rienced, with the exception
of my parents, though always
longed to, especially now that
my family no longer lives).
I would recommend this
wonderful yet sad story to
anyone who loves to read or
listen on CD. I listened to the
CD twice as the story of their
friendship is so compelling.
Ann Patchett also narrates
the audio book, and one can
hear the emotion pout out of
her voice.
"Bel Canto" by Ann
Patchett (CD Fic Pat). After
listening to Patchetts' non-
fiction, I couldn't wait to get
hiy hands on her fictional
stories. Bel Canto was her
first book to gain recognition,
and that was only after it was
Smass-marketed in paper-
back Readers got real inter-
ested in her xiew of humanity
hidden within the story. I
know I did. Bel Canto takes
place in an unnamed South
American country. The Vice
President is hosting a party
in honor of Mr. Hosokawa,
the CEO of a powerful Japa-
nese corporation: Guests
from a variety of different
.countries are invited. The
entertainment is a famous
American opera singer,
Roxanne Coss, that every-
one wants to hear. Halfway -
through the party, a terrorist
group sneaks in and takes
,everyone hostage. Negotia-
tions take place. All of the
women are let go with the
exception of the opera singer.
There is one translator, who
works for Mr. Hosokawa.
He speaks the languages of
everyone present. As time
goes on and negotiations are
not met the mood softens
as these terrorists mean no
harm. During the four and
a half months that pass re-
lationships and friendships
develop as the opera singer
practices and sings, uniting
all both terrorists and hos-
tages. The outside world is
forgotten. Then reality blows
in and up as the authorities
come in for the rescue. I
also liked this one because it
lulled me into the story and
took me out of reality, as the.
characters experienced in
the book
