When heavy rains threatened to wash out a culvert on,
Highway 4A in Baker, they brought more than rushing
floodwaters to the site. ,.
They also brought $26;842.25 in federal money to cor-
rect the drainage problem, providing work for a local con-
tractor and more than a dozen members of his construc-
tion crew.
Since 1990, the United States Department of Agri-
culture's Natural Resources Conservation Service has
brought more than $20 million in tax dollars back to the
county, according to Okaloosa District Conservationist
Darryl Williams.
"In a way it's a stimulus rebate," Williams said. "We
like to know that some of that money is coming back from
the federal (government) to the community."
Since the local NRCS office opened in 1990, it has over-
seen work on more than 100 Emergency Watershed Pro-
tection projects in Okaloosa County, most of them in the
northern part. Generally the projects have been for ero-
sion control.
The Crestview office. currently has five local EWP
, projects worth a total of $515,690.33 working concurrently.
Four of them, including the culvert construction in High-
way 4A, are in the northern part of the county.
Williams said EWP funds ard requested by local or
county governments to address erosion and flooding prob-

CPD raids 'one of the
biggest' meth labs
When Zoe L. Watson and her
boyfriend were arrested on charg-
es of operating a meth lab out of
her Crestview home, police didn't
have far to transport them.
The house is across the street
from the county jail.
The raid by the Crest-

Street Crimes Unit on
March 5 at 155 Brackldn St..
netted a supply of metham-

felony charges and two mis-
demeanors. In addition to
felonies including posses-
sion, distribution and man-

faces child abuse charges
because her 10-year-old son
lived in the home.
Watson's boyfriend, Grady Lee
Daugherty, 31,' of Crestview, was
arrested on charges of cocaine
possession. His 2007 Chevrolet
pick-up truck'was seized when co-
caine was discovered in its cab.
Watson disavowed any knowl-
edge of drug activity.in the house,,
:according to her arrest report.
Suspects stopped shortly after
leaving the residence, as well as
visitors still at the home, told police
they regularly purchased drugs
from Watson at the residence.

Find contentment
in the Bible
Eugene Strickland
Okaloosa Baptist Association
Many secrets are not
gossip, but some are.
We have all had some-
one whisper, "Nobody else
knows this,, but did you
know that...?" And, there is
something in us that likes
that kind of "news"!
Secrets get our atten-
tion. Amazon.com lists
37,190 book titles with the
title "Secrets of (fill in the
bank)." These books proba-
bly sell because we all want
to learn what works in our
peculiar situations in life..
In Philippians 4:10-23,
the Apostle Paul shares,
out of his relationship with
Jesus' Christ, this secret
of contentment: "I have
learned to be content, what-
ever the situation...I. know
what it is to be in need and
I know what it is to have
plenty ... whether well-fed
or hungry."
And then he adds, "I can
do all of this through Christ
and gives me strength."
There is the secret! Not,
"I will escape everything
bad." That is "prosperity.
theology." Every one of us
will hurt, grieve, be upset,
struggle, be afraid. That is
because we are finite, lim-
ited humans. Paul's secret
is a relationship, a person.
It is a relationship with Him
who created us in His image
who came into our world,
and who paid the ultimate
sacrifice for our deliberate
separation from. Him. He
never promised to deliver
us from all the tough issues
of life. He did promise to
sustain us "through the val-
ley of the shadow of death."
And it happens when we
choose to allow Him to be
our Savior and Lord.
When you and I learn
this secret of this kind of
contentment we will make
tremendous progress in
dealing with our own per-
sonal lives, our' neighbor-
hoods, our communities,
our cities, our counties,'our
nation and ultimately our
world.
And, we will see dramat-
ic changes, spiritually, polit-
ically, economically, socially,
ethically and in a myriad of
other conditions. May God
grant this so to be!

On a mission: Local pastor heading to Belize to start ministry
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
Heath Burchett likes
his Crestview ministry
and all his local friends,
but when the Big Boss
calls, you know you gotta
answer.
The First United Meth-
odist Church of Crest-
view's popular associate
and youth pastor heard
the call load and clear.
Come June, he and his
wife Amanda will move
. to Belize to start the new
Belize Ha-Bit Missions
Ministry.
"We are all called to be
witnesses for Jesus Christ
and to make disciples,
wherever God has placed
us or leads us," said Bur-
chett in a farewell letter
to members of the FUMC
congregation.
Pastor Burchett is the
first to acknowledge the
often-touchy 'subject of
tackling the challenges
of a foreign mission when
there are local needs to
be met.
"I have felt the same
way, but God has changed
that," Burchett said, cit-
ing his earlier ministry to
street kids in North Caro-
lina. "I never could quite
understand one going far
away to minister when we
had a huge need locally.
"The reason I felt that
way and was so passion-
ate about the streets of
Winston-Salem at that
time was because that
was where God was call-
ing us to minister," Bur-
chett wrote.
He reminded his con-
gregants that the apostle
Paul was frequently called
on missionary journeys.
"God makes us more
passionate about a certain
area or.people because he
wants us to do a specific
thing or disciple a certain
group," Burchett wrote.
During previous mis-
sionary work in Central
and South America, the
Burchetts spent time in
Peru and Belize. In the
latter, nation, the former
British Honduras, they
were especially touched
by the people and real-
ized their plight often,
falls through the cracks
because of the country's
small population (fewer
than 300,000 souls in all).
"'Belize 'is just not in
the. scope of a lot of orga-
nizations that have mis-
sionaries, and that led us
to look into starting our
own," Burchett said.
The Burchetts' mis-.
sion will be independent
of the FUMC.
"We're not going
through the local church
SPECIAL TO THE CRESTVIEW NEWS BULLETIN

leave Crestview for Belize.
and putting the burden on
them," Burchett said.
It wasn't just the per-
vasiveness of the Ameri-
can media and products
that has, created prob-
lems in Belize. Some of
our bad habits also have
an impact on the more
vulnerable.
"Did you know that
a third of the cocaine
brought into the U.S. is
transported from Colum-
bia through Belize?" Pas-
tor Heath asked.
"There are 23 differ-
ent gangs in Belize," he
continued. "It's starting
to become a dangerous
place because of drugs
and gangs and lack of wel-
fare and jobs."
Problems ranging
from budgetary restric-
tions that preclude ad-
equate border .patrols
to low wages that make
narcotics 'trafficking at-
tractive, make the small
nation, tucked between
Mexico, Guatemala and
Honduras, a target for
drug smuggling.
"This makes drugs a
huge problem in Belize as
well," Burchett said. "As
youth workers, Amanda
and I have a heart to min-.
ister to struggling teens',
in Belize who are on the
streets, don't have a rela-
tionship with Christ, are
on drugs and in gangs.
"Our heart really
breaks for the teenagers
in Belize," he continued.
"That is one of the rea-
sons we were led there.
Over 50 percent of the
population is under 18."
When Pastor Heath
and Amanda were doing
"missionary work in Belize
last year, "The. one thing
that really stuck out for'
me was the church was
full on Sunday and our
children's Bible school
was full," he said.
"Then something hap-
pens when they get to be
teenagers. Teenagers in
the church were virtually
(nonexistent)," Burchett
observed. "We have a
heart to take the church
outside of the walls."
The Burchetts' work
will include street minis-
try, sports ministry, evan-
gelism services, providing
food, developing relation-
ships, discipleship and
community involvement.
They will also assist lo-
cal pastors, as many are
only part-time preach-
ers who hold other jobs
to make ends meet. The
Burchetts' ministry, will
offer their, evangelism
services around coun-
try outside of Belize City,
where they will be head-.
quartered, and partner
with local churches.
"That will be. a great
way to be involved with
local churches," Pastor
Heath said. "It will be a
great way to minister to
the unchurched and to
incorporate them into the
church."
Next month Amanda
and Heath celebrate their
10-year wedding anniver-
sary. They will spend part
of it in Belize to set up
preliminary. services for
. their ministry, including a
place to live.
"We can't get down
there soon enough," he
said enthusiastically.
"Our. friends are excited
about us coming down
there. Belizians are a very
friendly people."

Local woman with modeling experience says you
can find all you need in north county
Kyle Wright
Crestiew News Bulletin
Wondering how you can keep pace with the latest fashions in
today's tight economy?
Esin Gershaw suggests taking a look in your.closet. You might
already own some elements of the spring's trendiest fashions.
Gershaw, who enjoyed a successful career in the fashion industry
before moving to the area, said you can look like a New York runway
model without leaving Crestview.
"You do have to be frugal, especially in this economy," she said.
"But we have local stores, and they carry a.reasonably priced large
assortment of merchandise."
"I modeled couture gowns in New York .City that cpst $30,000, but
I never bought them, and still would not buy such expensive clothes
when you can find moderately priced fashionable clothes here."
Gershaw discussed some of the latest trends in the fashion in-
dustry:
"Chunky" jewelry such as wide bracelets, rings, necklaces and
brooches with-enormous stones are a must have for spring and
summer. Wear them with beige and khaki color clothes
and let the bright colorful clothes to be your jewelry .
instead,-Gershaw.also suggested using.brooches as .
home decoration. You could, for example, pin a brooch
on a sofa.pillow as home decoration.
Scarves and belts, both popular accessories dur-
ing the fall, are still going strong this spring. Scarves '.
made of lighter.fabrics are particularly trendy. Two
different color scarves can be.twisted together and
worn to make a fashion statement. Wide belts are
being worn over dresses, skirts and slacks. ,
"Python" material (think snakeskin) is popping
Uip in belts, shoes and handbags. Yellow, red, brown
and turquoise are typical colors.
Bright colors are in fashion. Yellow is an early fa-
vorite for 2009's "color of the year." You'll find clothing
combinations featuring colors like peach, salmon, aqua,
hot pink and all shades of blue. Accent colors also are
bright colors. Similar shades are -being used for make-
up.
Styles from the 1930s. 1940s and 1950s are making a
comeback, particularly in bathing suits. You'll see polka
dots and plaid fabrics popularized in the 1930s and 1940s .
back on the beach. this spring and summer. Straight
skirted and belted bathing suits have the '50s look. A
1950s-style swishing skirt and cinched waist strikes a
mood of all-American optimism.
Sky-high shoes with "chunky" heels up to seven .
inches high were on the runways during the fashion
shows. "In fact many of the models fell and could not walk
properly," Gershaw said. "But they are very much in fash-
ion."
Red is the word in hair and lipstick color.
One last tip:
Gershaw provided a photo of a chic woman with tight yel-
low pants, tall chunky shoes and red hair (at right).
The look would work in New York, she said, but prob-
ably not in north Okaloosa County.
S"That wouldbe a little too edgy here," she said. "Crest-
view is a bit more conservative, but you can.still find up-to-
date fashions, especially the very bright colors." ,
-* *. '
Scarves and belts, both
popular accessories during the fall, are.
still going strong this spring.
Esin Gershaw, a local resident with
professional modeling experience, offers
these tips to make sure your clothes are the
right fit:
"No article of clothing is smart unless it fits
perfectly. Frequent alterations are necessary
to achieve good lines. I suggest that you go
through the entire wardrobe once a month and
fix loose hems, seams, buttons, snaps, etc., wear
the garments and see how they feel. Can you sit
and walk easily in it?
"One shopping tip ... when shopping, try on
clothes before you buy them. Sometimes you think
you are a size 12 and you pick up a size 12
from the rack, but it may not always fit because
manufacturers cut the patterns differently,
Here are nine common signs of a poor-fitting
garment:
1) Neckline that gaps or chokes
2) Shoulder seams that droop
3) Skimpy armholes prevent easy
rpovements
4) Bodices that droop or pull too
tight across bust or gap
5) Waistline that does not conform
tb natural waistline front or back
6) Skirt and slacks that strain on
the hips
7) Sleeveless fashions that gap at
armhole
8) Pants too short or too long
9) Sleeves that are foo long or too short "

workmanship you can

things:;
1) Adequate hems.
Sometimes the hem is
very narrow and rippling
2) Adequate seams.
Do seams ripple or pull
apart?
3) Matching threads.
The thread color should
match fabric color.
4) Zippers should be
hidden. A badly fit
zipper will pull the
garment out of line.

Antioch program makes math fun
I FROM THE
PRINCIPAL'S
OFFICE
Principal Glenda Rob-
inson submitted this report
from Antioch Elementary
School.
Antioch Elementary
School offers students a
unique opportunity to learn
math skills in a fun, hands-
on learning cottage. The
Hands-on-Math program
was created by Susan
Spears, who acquired a
plethora of manipulatives
and implemented the suc-
cessful program. Each
child visits the HOM room
every two weeks for a 45-
minute session that covers
Sunshine State Standards
appropriate for his or her
.grade level.
Lessons are designed
to cover the standards by
using manipulatives in-
stead of traditional paper
and pencil methods. For
example, students follow a
recipe to make Rice Krispy
Treats to learn about ca-
pacity. They use real ther-
mometers and cups of ice
water and warm water to.*
learn how to tell tempera-
ture. Students manipulate
packets of school money
to follow grade appropri-
ate books, such as Bunny
Money (Rosemary Wells)
or Pigs Will Be Pigs (Amy
Axelrod), in order to sort,
count and exchange bills
- and coins. They complete
a geometry unit by using
hand-held models of two-
and three-dimensional ,
shapes; learn how to iden-
tify and draw parts of the
i shapes, such as angles,
i vertices and faces; and
= take a geo-walk to identify
shapes in their immediate
surroundings. Lessons
t such as these successfully
move students through the
concrete, representational
and abstract levels of learn-
ing mathematical concepts
while making math fun.
Thirteen students in
grades three through five
have read at least 15 of
the new Sunshine State
books and. scored above
70 percent on the corre-
lated comprehension tests.
Alice Clark, remediation
teacher, challenged all stu-
dents to participate. The
competition ends April 1,
with winners being treated
to an ice cream social, a
trophy and a trench ball
tournament.
Our PE. department
has emphasized cardiovas-
cular exercises and good '
nutrition this year in order
to promote wellness. The
department is finalizing
plans for our annual field
days. Parents are invited
to spend the day with their
children on the PE. field
on the following dates:
fifth grade, April 10; fourth
grade, April 13; third grade,
April 14; second grade, April
15; first grade, April 16; kin-
dergarten, April 17. Please
join us for a day of fun.
Our Reading Com-
mittee chairperson, Kay
Green, has announced
plans for our yearly au-
thor's visit. Jason Rusco,
an Antioch parent, is donat-
ing his.time and will speak
with students April 15 and
16 about the writing of his
books and the publication
process. He is the author
,of "I'm a Worm and I Can
Fly" and "The Brave Liz-
ard," with a third book in
the publishing process. Our
Aviators have seen how
an author's life influences
their work, and they are
learning that writers are
ordinary people like them.
These opportunities help
spark students' interests in
reading and writing.

The Laurel Hill city council
discussed the community's wa-
ter needs at its Thursday evening
meeting as it determines how best
to spend a $300,000 water system
improvement grant..
Guest Ann Van Hall of the
USDA Rural Development agen-
cy addressed the council. The
city's current water system loan
from 1993, which was at 5.25 per-
cent interest, was made by the
USDA, she reminded council
members.
Van Hall said, "Just about any-
thing you need, we can make you
a loan for."
The agency can assist with
loans and grants for projects rang-
ing from fire stations to water
services, Van Hall said. However,
she said the USDA is expecting a
"flood of applications" for assis-
tance on community projects as fi-
nances get increasingly tighter na-
tionwide, so if the city is interested
in securing USDA funding for any
projects, it should act soon.
Based on Laurel Hill's aver-
age household income, the city
qualifies for the agency's medium
income category loans, which can
take up to 40 years to be repaid.
"We loan 100 percent, of all
projects," Van Hall said, includ-

of B&H Contracting said
the owner had planned an

Jennifer Stegher spoke
on behalf of residents in
the area and said all were
opposed to industrial de-

A public meeting to assess pub-

An engineer would also be re-

Van Hall cautioned some firms

The Crestview-tennis program
is moving up in the world.
Crestview's girls were 6-1 on the
year heading into Friday's match
against Pace. The Bulldog boys
were off to a strong start in their
own right with a 4-3 record.
"Our girls season has started off
great, and right now our guys are
ahead of the curve," .coach Benja-
min Kimbrough said. "(The girls)
only lost to Pace, and that was the
first match of the season."
The key to, Crestview's suc-
cess could be the mix, of veteran
and younger players. Watching his
older players grow and enjoy some,
success has been very gratifying
for Kimbrough.
"It's good seeing the kids get
older and get better as they go
along," he said. "They've been out
here playing and playing and prac-
ticing and stuff like that, and every
year they get better.
"As long as they are consistent
about coming out, they usually get
better with all the practice we do."
Seniors Cody Dreaden and An-
gelo Fajardo have been on the team
since their freshmen years.
"They started out with me as
freshmen and are now on the top of
the varsity squad," Kimbrough said.
"I have a senior, Joseph Messier,
that started out his sophomore year
and didn't make the'squad at all.
"Now he plays No. 3 (as a se-
nior). And he's got a 5-2 record now.
They are all doing real well."
Crestview's. No. 1 girls player,
Moya Moore, is a junior with a 7-0
record. Moore has been the Dawgs'
No. 1 player since her freshman
season.
Senior Cora Merritt started as
doubles player her freshman year
and is now the No. 3 singles play-
er with a 6-1 record. Merritt and
Moore also team up to form the No.
1 doubles team.
"They are doing a great job,"
Kimbrough said. "It's good to see
them come up so young and do so
Well. I
"The two of them play really well
together. They've been playing to-
gether for two years. They have a
lot of potential to do really well at
district."
Two freshmen, Sydney Pinkert
and Brittany Didonato, have made
their presence known early in their
careers.
Pinkert has moved into the No. 2
singles spot. Didonato is on the No.
2 doubles team.
"The level of play for as young as
they are has surprised me," Kim-
brough said. "Sydney Pinkert has
been doing really well and is having
a great season so far.
"Brittany Didonato, she is doing
an amazing job. She's been dominat-
ing when she plays."
Kimbrough said he thinks Wash-
ington and Pace are the two biggest
challenges for the Crestview girls
in a District 1-3A that also includes
Milton, Navarre, Pine Forest, Es-
cambia and Tate.
"Just in general, as young as the
team is, I'm very excited.about how
they are doing," Kimbrough said of
the girls. "And our guys, I'm very ex-
cited about them, too.
"The guys have been holding
their- own and doing really well.
When they lose, it's usually against
the top teams or they've got high-
end players. The guys we are on par
with we are beating 7-0."
Kimbrough said the attitude of
the boys has been the difference this
year.
"They are just real motivated,"
he said. "They are putting up a fight
with everyone we play. Even with a
team that is supposed to roll over us,
they don't blow over us.
"We always go in knowing that on
any given day, anybody can beat you
out there. So we go out and give it 100
percent and hope it pans out. I don't
want to get foo excited, but so far the
season has been really great."

CHS wrestling bids farewell to coach
Randy Dickson
Crestview News Bulletin
The Crestview wrestling team
held a very special awards night
March 6 ....
The Bulldog grapplers said good-
bye to longtime coach Jeff Fowler.
Fowler spoke of the family atmo-
sphere he tried to instill in the pro-
gram and how being a part of the
family helped in tough times.
And there have been some tough
times in the last two years.
Fowler's wife, Carrie, a CHS grad,
lost herbattle with cancer last spring.
Members of the team also lost mem-
bers of their immediate families.
Fowler himself battled Crohn's dis-
ease throughout the 2007-08 season.
The members of the Crestview
wrestling family were there for each
other throughout the tough times.
"People talk about a team going
through the tough times and sticking
together as a family," he said. "Fam-
ily says more to what we have than
wins and losses. And what we have
is special.
"This year also was our best year
with 16 wins, the most ever."
The 2008-09 season produced
many memorable moments for the
Bulldogs.
Danny Johnson picked up his
100th career win on the mats and
Fowler his 100th duals win as a
coach, Crestview hosted the regional
wrestling tournament for the second
time in school history and remains
the only school west of Panama City,
to host a rgii,1i.
Those were some of the things

Fowler touched on in his farewell ad-
dress to his troops.
"The 100 coaching wins says more
about the kids on the team than the
coach," Fowler said. "But I'm taking
those 106 wins with me.
I "I love every single person that
has been associated with this team.
This is an awesome thing that we've
had, It starts with love because when
all is said and done, everyone needs
to feel loved."
Fowler presented individual
awards and then had one other an-
nouncement to make. He introduced
and.
Ron Panucci as the next CHS wres-
tling coach.
It was then Fowler's turn to be
recognized. The team presented him
with certificates and plaques.
Crestview athletic director Matt
Brunson gave Fowler a plaque on
behalf the school thanking him for
eight years of dedication and service
to the school and the team.
The highlight of the night came
when it was announced the team had
raised $300 for Carrie's Hope, a char-
ity to help children started in Carrie
Fowler's memory.
Golf tips
FROM THE
PRO
A shot that
can bring you
to your knees
Jeff Marks
As told to Randy Dickson
Ask most tour pros,
and they'll tell you the
hardest shot is the 50-
to 60-yard wedge. In
this week's Golf Tips
from the Pro, Heritage
Plantation PGA
teaching pro Jeff Marks
gives some advice on
how to hit the difficult
shot..
I've heard tour pros say
many times the hardest
shot in the bag is the 50- to
60-yard wedge.
For pros, it's kind of
tough because you have to
take a'half swing.With a half
swing, even pros tend to
de-accelerate and not hit the
ball the way they want to.
I like people to accelerate
at all times. So what I like for
people to do is experiment
and find out what club is
going to help you hit that
50-, 60-yard.shot. I can
tell you for somebody like
myself, I hit a lob'wedge
about 85-90 yards.
If I wanted to hit that
60-yard shot but still hit it
with a little bit of"umph," \
I'm going to choke down
on the club. It's a good idea
to go ahead and choke ,.
down about two inches on
whatever club you decide is
going to work best for you.
.What I would suggest
for most people would be
a sand wedge or a pitching
wedge.
Again, I'm going to choke
down about two inches. I'm
going to narrow my stance
a little bit, which promotes
hitting down. Any time
you get narrow, your arch
is going to be much more
definitive (when you are
wide in your stance, it tends
to make your swing more
bowl shape and catch the
.ball a little more shallow).
I'm going to get a little
narrow. I'm going to get
my feet left of target (for a
right-hander) just a little bit.
I'm going to set my
wedge about a degree open
or so, which is going to
promote a very' soft landing.
And it promotes backspin,
believe it or not.The more
open you have the club, th&
more backspin you will have.
I'm going to lean toward
my front side. And the key
to hitting this shot is we
want to feel the hands stay
'in front (of the ball) at all
times. So through impact, we
want to feel the left hand,
for a right-handed golfer,
hitting down on the golf ball
and leading through impact.
A very common problem
is the club beating the hands
through impact. It usually
ends up in a topped shot.
To keep that left hand in
Front of the club head,we
want to feel the right hand
is very soft in the golf swing.
And it's very. important
That we feel like we hit the
shot with the knees and the
rotation of the hips.
Once your legs and hips
stop, your hands tend to
break down and you flip
(your shot).
You hit this shot with
your knees.Your legs lead
the club through impact so
it doesn't flip.
