military, also will prove
invaluable to the SWAT
team's police operations.
"I can think of two re-
cent situations right off
where we could have used
this equipment," Floyd said.
In one instance, officers
chased an armed man into
an attic, potentially expos-
ing themselves to hostile
fire as they searched for the
suspect.
In another case, of-
ficers from several local
law enforcement agencies
pursued a suspect into a
heavily wooded swamp
area where, after hours of
searching, he was found
hidden under a clump of
undergrowth.
In both situations, the

Local artist's library exhibit 'warm, lively'
Brian Hughes
Arts & Entertainment Editor
Local artist Faye
Jones has installed an
exhibit at the Robert Sikes
Crestview Public Library
demonstrating the art of
encaustic painting. Jones'
paintings express a variety
of subjects, including still
lifes, portraiture, and
landscapes.
Encaustic painting
dates back to ancient
Greek shipbuilders. It is a
mixture of heated beeswax,
dammar resin and pigment.
"They initially used the
melted beeswax and resin
to caulk the hulls of their
ships," Jones explained.
"Soon afterward they
added pigment to the mix
and painted the ships with
fearsome images designed'
to induce terror in the
hearts of their enemies."
Jones' delightful
subjects induce anything
but terror. Her lively
interplay of light and
shadow, applied with both.
brush and palette knife,
produce warm, inviting
images.
Jones said the method
was later used by the
Greeks to decorate statues
and wooden panels.
Between 100 B.C. and
200 A.D., artists used the
method to produce funereal
likenesses to accompany
the subject into the afterlife.
The development of
more conventional painting
methods caused the demise
of encaustic painting until
its revival in the 1920s,
Jones said.
"Encaustic painting
remains relatively
unchanged from the days
of the ancient Greeks,
Romans and Egyptians,"
she said.
Jones began painting
in 1993 in Boston, working
primarily in watercolors
until she switched to oils in
1997. She and her husband
Mike moved to Crestview
in 2002. She has been active
with the Emerald Coast
Plein Air Painters since
its inception in 2004. She
also dabbles in hand-built
pottery.
You may view Faye
Jones' exhibit of encaustic
paintings during normal
library opening hours
through April. For
information, call the library
at 682-4432.

We have a lot going on
here at the library as
usual! If your mail comes
early and you are reading

morning from 10 a.m. to
noon. And Story Time
today (and Thursday)
at 10:15 a.m. is "In Our

Please bear with
us during the month of
March as all six libraries
in the Okaloosa County

convert to new software
that runs all areas of
our operations. No new
items can be added to the
collections during March,
so it will be longer before
we can get those newest
bestsellers to you. We also
cannot make any hold
requests for items until we
are up and running on our
new "Symphony" system.
The switchover week
will be March 16-21 with
very limited services
available. There will
be limited check-out of
materials, and only if you
have your library card
with you. We will not be
able to look up patrons or
items. This will test your
(and our!) knowledge
of the Dewey Decimal
System when you come
into the library looking
for something next week!
The card catalogs both in
the library and the online
public access catalog will
not be working (and will
look very different when

be able to renew any items

Your library cards will

We hope to be able to

Extension agent: Don't eat these local plants
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
SWith spring just around
the corner, many north
county gardeners already
are noticing their azaleas
starting to bloom. Soon
our yards and lanes will
be ablaze with the Asian
import's profusion of vivid
pink, red, white, and even
orange blossoms.
Just don't eat any of
them, warns Larry Wil-
liams, Okaloosa County
Extension agent. All parts
of the beautiful evergreen
shrub are poisonous.
Williams' "Common
Poisonous Plants of North
Florida Landscapes" pre-
sentation was the March
"First Tuesday" lecture at
the Bob Sikes Crestview
Public Library.
Always a popular speak-
er, Williams drew about 40
avid gardeners.
Among them was Mat-
thew Young, 15, of Laurel
Hill, a junior master gar-.
dener, who attended with
several other master gar-
deners. Young hung on
every word as Williams
described a variety of com-
mon and popular ornamen-
tal plants that, although
beautiful, can cause severe
illnesses or even death if
eaten.
"My purpose is not to
create fear; it's to inform,"
assured Williams, who is
often asked by emergency
medical responders to iden-
tify parts of plants ingested
by unsuspecting people.

to avoid many brightly
colored berries, pods and
leaves, Williams said. He
said fall is an especially,
busy season because many
plants bear inedible fruit at
that time.
Williams presented pho-
tos of some of our area's
most common, yet poison-
ous, plants:
Angels' Trumpet: "All
parts of the plant are tox-
ic," Williams said. Eating
them can cause blurring of
vision, delirium or death.
Azaleas: "People don't
realize all parts of this plant
are poisonous," Williams
said. But, "it would take a
considerable amount of the
plant -to cause an issue."
Symptoms are nausea,
vomiting, weakness, dizzi-
ness, breathing difficulty
or coma.
Boxwood: Ingesting
the leaves of this ornamen-
tal hedge plant can cause
gastric problems and vom-
iting.
Cherry:. Part of the
genus Prunus, which in-
cludes peaches, plums and
almonds, the leaves, bark
and seeds of all species are
toxic, causing gasping and
nervous disorders.
Daffodil, Jonquil and
Narcissus: The bulbs can
cause nausea, vomiting
and death if eaten.
Elderberry: Not toxic
if cooked in a pie, jelly or
wine, the raw berry can
cause nausea.
Elephant ear: All
parts of this big-leafed
shrub are toxic 'and can
cause intense burning and

irritation of the tongue, as
well as death, if ingested.
English Ivy: The
leaves, stems and fruits
can cause headache, fever,
anxiety, breathing difficul-
ty, coma and even death if
ingested in quantity.
Hydrangea: "Most
people are not going to
eat enough to cause a
problem," Williams said.'
If they do, expect gastro-.
intestinal problems and
convulsions.
Lantana: The fruit is
appealing to children but
can cause gastric prob-
lems, vomiting, diarrhea,
circulatory collapse and
death. "Educate children
that this plant is a no-no,"
Williams warned.
Nightshade: All parts
of the plant can cause nau-
sea, vomiting, abdominal
pain, diarrhea, respiratory
depression and death, Wil-
liams warned.
Oleander: "This is
a big one," Williams said.
"This is one of the most
toxic plants in the south-
east. One leaf has been re-
ported to kill a man."
Ingesting any part of the
oleander plant can cause
dizziness, irregular heart-
beat, nausea, convulsions
and death.
Poison Ivy, Poison
Oak and Poison Sumac:
This group is one of the few
'that can cause problems
by touching, ingesting or
breathing smoke from
burning it, Williams said.
Williams did clarify one
common misconception:
It is not true that you 'can
spread it from blisters if
you get a rash from the
plants, he said.
Williams advised any-
one handling poison ivy,
oak or sumac to wear dis-
posable gloves and throw
them away immediately
after use.
Potatoes: "Don't eat
the green skin of a potato,"
Williams advised. "It's in
the nightshade family."
Plumbago: The leaves
and stems can cause stom-
ach pain.
Privet: The fruit of
this common but non-na-
tive weed is toxic.
Sago Palm: Not re-
ally a palm at all, the seeds,
roots trunk and pith can
cause headache, vomiting'
and stomach disorders.
Tomato: The leaves
and stems are toxic. Avoid
too many fried green toma-
toes; they can cause stom-
ach disorders.
Wisteria: The pods
and seeds of this lovely or-
namental plant can cause
stomach pain, diarrhea,
nausea and vomiting.
Williams advised resi-
dents to keep the phone
number of the National
Poison Control Center (800-
222-1222) near the phone.
Dialing it will connect you
to the Florida poison con-
trol center in Jacksonville.

HUBBUB
Here is a sampling of what people had to say about
recent north Okaloosa County news topic. Comments
were collected from the crestviewbulletin.com Web site.
Topic: Local attorney Nathan Boyles offers his
picks for Crestview's city council elections in his
"Ask the Attorney column."
Mr. Boyles indicated that (Precinct 1 candidate Ben-
jamin) lannucci is a transplant from points north but
failed to mention that (Precinct 1 incumbent Chip) Wells
is also a transplant from points north. He also made it a
point to address Mr. Iannucci's age as well as (Precinct
3 candidate Kathleen) Bowman's. I'm very surprised a
lawyer would make this an issue. Also, since Mr. Boyles
claims to be an expert in linguistics, he should have
known that hang-out was introduced to the English lan-
guage in 1948 as slang for a place to socialize (n.) or to
spend time socially (v.). I was at the forum, and I bet 95
percent of attendees knew what hang-out meant.,
Good article Attorney Boyles. You have taken the
time to see who's best for the city council job and you
don't even live in the city. Thht's more effort than some
Crestview residents can claim. /
A good majority of Us in Crestview are northern
transplants and have fit in just fine. The comment that
a few more years of southern exposure will help Mr.
lannucci develop the qualities necessary to relate to his
constituency and govern effectively is appalling. What
I get from that statement is that he thinks Mtr. lannucci
needs to spend more time here to become a southerner,
that him being from the north 'automatically means he,
cannot relate to people from the south and that he needs
to change or adapt who he is.
Mr. Boyles owns a business and pays takes within the
city limits, which would be directly impacted by the deci-
sions made within the city government. All things being
equal he does have a 'right to his opinion regardless of
where he lives.
I am glad to see the local interest in this election.
Maybe Crestview will finally have enough good people
on board who are really interested in this city. The next
election, in two years, will really be one to watch and
participate in.
Topic: Crestview Police Department makes more
than 20 arrests in "Operation Crack-Down."
I am one of the people who called the police, 'and I am
glad to see them cleaning up our neighborhood.
I do want to commend the CPD for drug bust sting.
But I have to say I don't understand why it took so long?
There are drugs all over Crestview but the .Crestview
police are only worried about harassing people of the
black neighborhoods.
S '-. "* t . ...
These people were arrested for drug related crimes,
and some of you play the, race card. Get a life! These
people are criminals!
Lt. Floyd said the reason we were able to get these
drug dealers off the street is because citizens brought
them to ourattention. What! That means that all the
money taxpayers gave to the police to protect us went to
what? It also means'that they never were able to identify
the drug dealers. It took the taxpayer to point out what
was going on. This is what people have come to expect
from law enforcement.

PASSING SHOTS
No one left to cover Crestview
We don't have the results from
Tuesday's Crestview municipal
elections in today's paper
because our press time
was before voting was
completed.
If we followed the
reasoning of some of the
recent comments on the
www.crestviewbulletin.com
Web site, we would never KYLE V
cover Crestview city busi- (850) 6
ness at all.
That seems to be the logic of
several folks hopefully a minor-
ity who posted online responses
to a recent column in the News
Bulletin.
The column, penned by a local
attorney who practices in Crest-
view but whose most recent phone
book address is outside of the city,
addressed the Crestview city coun-
cil elections.
Four online commenters took
issue with the column not
because of any of the opinions
expressed in the piece, but simply
because the writer had a non-
Crestview address.
"Why should your comments
hold any weight for a city you only
work in but not live in?" was a rep-'
resentative response.
Following that logic another
step, it appears the News Bulletin
shouldn't cover Crestview city
business. .
No one on our editorial staff re-
sides within city limits.
In fact, perhaps no one in the lo-
cal media should cover Crestview
city business.
The key figures at the
local radio station and on-
line video network also re-
side outside of city limits.
Carrying the argument
all the way to the extreme:
Me: "Adolf Hitler was a
RIGHT really, really evil man."
82-6524 Hypothetical German
citizen: "You can't say.
that! You've never lived in Ger-
many!"
Back to reality, since a high per-
centage of north Okaloosa Coun-
ty's residents either reside or work
in Crestview, we naturally take an
interest in the, city's business.
If there a big decision is made
in Crestview, chances are it will
affect many people outside of
Crestview.
The actual choices for Crest-
view's city leaders should stay
within city limits, but knowledge of
the issues knows no boundaries.
If a person chooses to educate
himself or herself and then ex-
press some opinion about Crest-
view city business, that opinion
deserves a
fair hearing.
You don't have to agree with
that opinion. But it should be be-
cause you don't agree with the
opinion; not because of the writer's
mailing address.

Sports not the place to cut the school budget
There are lots of con-
cerns about next year's
Okaloosa County education
budget and how it will af-
fect every aspect of the way
schools do business.
It's not surprising that
the various athletic pro-
grams are receiving a lot of
attention as areas that can
be reduced..
I haven't heard anything
specific, but it wouldn't
surprise me if there is talk
of completely eliminating
some sports.
The Florida High School
Athletic Association also
got in on the act by propos-
ing most sports cut their
schedules by 20 percent.
. (To the best of my knowl-
edge, the FHSAA hasn't,
made any proposals that
would take funding out of
its own bank account. If the
FHSAA reduced the per-
centage of the gate it gets
for playoff games by as little
as five percent, that would&
make a little difference for
local schools).
If you ask.me, cutting
games or sports isn't the
answer.
Granted, some sports
make little or no money at
all. Others just break even.
As is the case at the college
level, the sports most likely
to turn a profit are football
and basketball. I would ven-
ture to guess high school
baseball also might make a
little bit of money.
Some parents argue ath-
letic programs are limited
to a select few.
Don't tell that to Baker
athletic director and head
football
coach Bob
Kellogg. If
a kid can
stick it out
during the
off season
condition-,
RANDY DICKSON ing and w
North End Zone through
spring and
summer practice, they'll
earn a spot on the Gator
football team. -
Baker has more than
100 kids out for track and
field too. That's hardly a
program just forte elite.
At Crestview an athlete.
has to earn a spot on the.
Football team, but coach
Matt Brunson does a good
job of giving most kids who
want to try football a shot.
Other sports with more
limited rosters might not
have the numbers luxury of
track or football, but there
are opportunities for kids to
participate and be a part of
a team.
There are a number
of reasons sports are ifn-
portant for our kids, our
schools and our community.
I think most people un-
derstand the importance
of school and community
pride that go with sports.
On any Friday night dur-
ing the fall Baker's Doug
Griffith Stadium or Crest-
view's Jack Foster Stadium
becomes the center of
north Okaloosa County.
That's the impact of
sports on many of our lives.
Why are sports impor-
tant for our kids?
The obvious reason
sports are good for any
kids: The conditioning
and physical fitness level
achieved practicing and
competing in a sport.
Yes, some boy might be a
280-pound lineman who
struggles to run his sprints,
but he must complete his
sprints and conditioning
drills just like his smaller,'
more agile teammates.
A kid also benefits from
sports because he or she
learns to be a part of a.
team. Sports can teach kids
how to get along with oth-
ers and work together for
a coqnmon goal. Those are
skills that come in handy in
every day adult life.
Someone who learns
to be a good teammate in
high school stands a good
chance of being a good
teammate in the workforce.
Finally sports are im-
portant to our kids because
they often give them struc-
ture and role models they
might not receive at home.
I was fortunate to be
raised in a home where
both parents were there
for me. I needed to look no
further than the end of the
supper table to find my best
male role model, but my
high school coaches taught
me things that my dad
couldn't teach me.
My line coach, Mike
Walker, was an impact play-
er in my life. Gulf Breeze
principal Sylvan Ladner
was an assistant coach
during my playing days. He
might be the head Dolphin
now, but he'll always be
"Coach" to me.
I know we have to put
a dollar value on jobs, but
the impact of the men and
women who coach our kids
will be felt long after the
last tackle is made or the
last out recorded.
We only hear about the
supplement coaches get for
taking on the extra duties.
Some might say it's too
much. I would argue, if the
money was available, it isn't
enough.
Most people don't real-
ize many of these men and
women conduct summer
programs without pay They
do it for the kids when they
might be working a sum-
mer job to pick up some
much needed extra money.
In a perfect world I'd
offer an answer to the prep
sports and budget prob-
lems, but I don't have that
answer.
I just know that cutting '
a sport, any sport, isn't the
answer. The guy on the golf
team loves his sport just
as much as the guy on the
football team.
And cutting schedules
makes no sense either, at
least not in the revenue
sports. If you cut games you
cut receipts. That only adds
to an already precarious
situation.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS BULLETIN
THE GIFT OF. LIFE: Stacey and Michael Franklin stand outside of North
Okaloosa Medical Center, where Michael received care and 24 units of
blood given through blood drives like the one slated for Thursday at the
hospital.
Blood drive hits close
to home for local family
Special to the News Bulletin
Each day, Michael and
Stacey Franklin deal with
health emergencies, help-
ing guide patients and
their loved ones through
some of life's scariest
moments. As nurses, the
Franklins are well-pre-
paredto handle nearly any
situation that may arise.
Yet when faced with
an unexpected emergen-
cy of their own, they had
to rely on the skills, care
and compassion of oth-
ers to get them through
a harrowing experience
that ultimately gave them
a greater passion for giv-
ing the gift of life giving
blood.
Stacey, a third floor
charge nurse at North
Okaloosa Medical Cen-
ter, recalls the day her
husband, a trauma
nurse who works in Gulf
Breeze, passed- out on
the job. The episode was
thought to be caused by
a minor health issue..Mi-
chael was transferred to
North Okaloosa Medical
Center, where his pri-
mary care physician, Dr.
Michael Foley, and others
on the hospital's medical
team assessed his situ-
ation. They discovered a
much more serious prob-
lem that would require
,surgery. Time was of the
essence..Michael was los-
ing blood rapidly.
"It was a terrible day,"
says Stacey. "I just kept
thinking, 'How am I going
to raise our three girls by
myself?' I was terrified."
During surgery, phy-
sicians were able to find
the exact location and
cause of the bleeding, but
with so much blood al-
ready lost, it was impera-
tive that Michael receive
an infusion so his body
could begin the healing
process.
In all, Michael re-
ceived 24 units of blood
and 37 blood products.
"Without those blood
products, my husband
would have died," says
Stacey. "I'm a nurse, so
I understand the impor-
tance of giving blood, but
I had never done it my-
self. Going through this
was a real eye-opener for
me, and I now know first-
hand just how critical it
can be."
Stacy says she is
already making an ap-
pointment to give back
and to give blood at
the Saint Patrick's Day
Blood Drive, present-
ed by WEAR TV-3 and
North Okaloosa Medical
Center, on Thursday. The
drive will be held at the
hospital's Senior Circle
Classroom at 127 Red-
stone Ave., Suite A from
7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appoint-
ments are encouraged
but not mandatory, and
are available by signing
up at www.fbsdonor.org.
Each donor will receive
a special t-shirt, a free
wellness checkup and
cholesterol screening.
Photo identification is re-
quired.
Michael cannot donate
blood, but says he too is
eager to give back. He
has not yet been cleared
to go back to work, but he
plans to be at the blood
drive on Thursday to help
in any way he can.
"I am so thankful to
everyone who has given
blood and to the amaz-
ing staff at North Oka-
loosa Medical Center
who cared for me with so
much compassion," says
Michael. "They literally
saved my life."
WALKER from page Al
depend on 'those people,"
Kirkland said.
The crisis teams include
administrators and school
psychologists, Kirkland ex-
plained. Local law enforce-
ment agencies are also vital
components of school crisis
teams.
"They give good advice
and help to man stations
and provide information
that would not necessarily
fall in an educator's area of
expertise," Kirkland said.
"When things happen,
we pull those resources
together right away. You al-
most go into. an automatic
response."
However well prepared
the crisis teams and educa-
tors are, there is always the
chance that the unexpected
will occur.
"Certainly, even the best
of plans don't cover all cir-
cumstances," Kirkland said.
"That's when peoples' de-
sire to help seems to kick in,
and it brings out the best in
all of us."
As an example, Kirk-
land cited the assistance
her school received from
other area principals when
the bus accident occurred.
Donna Holloway of South-
side Elementary and Jac-
queline Craig of Northwood
Elementary School both re-
ported to Walker.
"They conducted the
crisis team here, and I was
able to go to the scene and
be with my students and
their parents," Kirkland
said. "That was a wonderful
relief for me."
Having teachers who
truly care for their students
also helps shield the young-
sters from potentially trau-
matic events.
"The teachers take on
very much that parental
feeling of protection for
the children in the school,"
Kirkland said. "They pull
together, and nobody does
anything alone. We all do it
together. We are all support-
ive of one another."
Listening and respond-
ing to suggestions from
other faculty and team
members is also vital in an
emergency.
"When one person comes
up with -a suggestion for
what should happen next,
if it's not in our plan, we act
on those suggestions if it
fits the situation," Kirkland
said.
Equally important for ed-
ucators faced with a crisis in
the school is emotional sup-
port for one another.
"We hug each other a
lot and we try very much to
hold our emotions at bay and
keep the best interests of
our students and parents at
heart," Kirkland said. "That
seems to guide our decision
making along the way."

AIRPORT ROAD.ACCIDENT: The driver of this Chevy
Cavalier was turning into a driveway off of Airport
Road when the vehicle collided with the motorcycle.
Two teens injured in
Airport Road crash
Two teenagers were
hurt Friday in a motorcy-
cle crash on Airport Road,
according to the Florida
Highway Patrol.
Joshua Carnley and
. Jaylee Turnpaugh, both 17
and from Crestview, were
in serious condition at Sa-
cred Heart Hospital.
FHP troopers said the
teens were westbound- on
Airport at a high rate of
speed when eastbound
79-year-old Geraldine Six
slowed to make a left turn
into a private driveway
near Fairchild Road.
She didn't see the Ka-
wasaki motorcycle and
turned across its path, ac-
cording to a crash report.
Carnley and Turnpaugh
landed about 300 feet from
the point of impact. They
were both wearing hel-
mets. Charges in the crash
were listed as pending..

Jones, who was 17, was
ejected when the truck
driven by Williams left the
roadway and struck a dirt
embankment. He died at
the scene. Williams, who
had minor injuries, was
treated and released.
The accident occurred
just after midnight on Dfee.

Eddins said he had

whether Morris and oth-
ers in his department have

Morris was arrested
in Las Vegas Feb. 27 on a
federal complaint alleg-
ing fraud, theft and money
laundering.
Teresa Adams, Morris'
director of administration,

BAKER Track and field season
is off and running for the Baker Ga-

"We are strong, but we are young,"
coach David Oglesby said. "We've
got a lot of young talent.
"We graduated a lot last year
coming off a district championship
for our boys. We lost a lot of our
key members, so we are rebuilding
there."
The Gator girls have tome out of
the blocks a little faster.
"The girls are a little stronger,"
said Oglesby, whose team tied for
-second in its first meet.,
"We still didn't.run a lot of events
we are strong in because the fall of
night came and we couldn't finish the
meet. I feel like our girls have a good
chance to compete for the district
championship. Our boys are going to
have to put some things in place for
them to compete."
Oglesby said he expects the Gator
boys to be strong in the middle dis-
tances, with John Scott returning to

4x800 relay finished second in the
region in 2008, but three of the relay
runners graduated.
"We've got a couple of kids filling

He's not the most fleet of foot, but
he's a hard worker.

Brown prepared for rites of spring with Reds
Randy Dickson
Crestview News Bulletin
Former Crestview High School
and Northwest Florida State College
standout Anthony Brown returned.
to Sarasota, the spring training site
of the Cincinnati Reds, on Tuesday
as he continues his quest to make
the major leagues.
Brown said he had his eyes
opened last year while attending his
first spring training.
"The first thing I learned is that
there are more guys ahead of me
fighting for the same position, and
I'm going to fight just as hard to get
there," he said. "I'm going to have to
go through a lot more people than I ex-
pected I would just to make it there."
Now in his third year in the Reds
organization and his second spring
training; 21-year old Brown knows
the routines of the spring and minor
league life.
"We get up about 6:30 in the morn-
ing to eat breakfast, and we have to
be at the field by 8 o'clock," he said.
"Early work starts about 8 o'clock
and BP (batting practice) and team
work starts about 9 o'clock. We pret-
ty much go through until about 12
o'clock and have lunch and then go
back out and play a game.
"There are no breaks. It's every
single day. You don't get any days off,
but it's pretty good because there
are fans out there, too, and you get to
interact with fans."
Although most of the fans are
there for the big leaguers, they enjoy
interacting with minor leaguers, who
are more accessible to the public.
"It's pretty good to see the fans,"
Brown said. "It's laid back, but at the
same time it's a stressful environ-
ment."
Brown described the relationship
between the major league stars and
the minor league hopefuls as almost
like that of children and adults.
"You can talk to the major league
players," he said, "but it's kind of like
when you are kid and you aren't sup-
posed to get into the adult conversa-
tion unless you are spoken to."
Brown was quick to point out that
even in the minors, every player is
talented. He said he thinks the key to
success is a simple one.
"Consistency. I think that's the
biggest key in the minor leagues,"
he said.
"I don't think it's skills all the time,
because pretty much everybody in
professional baseball can hit a fastball
or do the simple things. The key is to
be consistent with it and put up good
numbers throughout the season."
Brown thought about baseball
even when he wasn't working out in
the offseason. He tried to absorb ev-
erything he could about the game.
"I read a lot of books about base-
ball to try and keep my mind into the
sport," he said. "At first, I got away
from it just to clear my mind and re-
lax. I put away all my baseball stuff
for a while.
"I read the book, 'The Mental
Game of Baseball,' and I learned
that your self is your biggest enemy,"
he said. "He gets you out more than
that pitcher does."
Brown did a lot of work in the bat-
ting cage working on his swing, and
he spent a lot of time running to build
his leg strength. He also worked on
eye-hand drills with his dad, Tony
Brown, using tennis balls to improve
his hands when catching a ball.
"It's so hard to jump into a com-
petitive level from a laid-back level
if your body is not ready," he said.
"You end up hurting yourself if you
make that jump and your body is not
ready.
"You are trying to make a team.
You need to go out there and get a
couple of hits a game and be consis-
tent and work hard."'
Last year at Billings, Mont., of the
Pioneer League, Brown led the team
with 12 homers and posted a .283 bat-
ting average.
Brown isn't counting on his strong
showing with the Billings Mustangs
to get him the promotion to Dayton,
Ohio, in Low Class A, or the spot he
really desires on the Sarasota roster
in High Class A.
"There are a lot of guys that go
out at night at spring training, but
that's not me," he said. "I prefer to
stay in and try to stay focused on
making the ball club.
"You can have fun when you're
through playing ball."

"You hope they will keep

If the youngest Gators

they still have a chance

"When. you have 109

the younger kids on the

"They might not be able
to help us for three or four
years, but somewhere
down the road, they'll be
able to help the program.
"It helps their mentali-

th.e high school kids. After
one or two years, they are
not a kid. They are out
here as a sixth grader

and they just become one
of the guys, and it doesn't

"We are proud of all of
them. They come out here
every day, and we crush

Lindsey Blanco, a dental

started the program to rec-

in the community.
"We're excited to get it go-

Nakaiye was inspired by

Start saving for that rainy day
Elaine Courtney
Okaloosa County Extension
One of the most powerful ways
to improve your financial situation
and accumulate wealth over time is
to develop a "savings habit." There
are many reports that provide a
great deal of advice, but the sim-
plest (and possibly most effective)
strategy is to "pay yourself first"
and save a portion of your income
on a regular basis.
It is more important today than
ever that Americans adopt this
simple habit. In other words, "sav-
ing for a rainy day" means starting
NOW! At least develop an emergen-
cy fund. People with an emergency
fund tend to be in better shape than
those without one. Studies show
those without emergency savings
are more likely to accumulate debt.
It may feel like you can't afford to
have one, but the truth is you can't
afford not to have one!
Why? Stuff happens! Most of
the time, it costs money! By set-
ting up an emergency cash fund,
you protect yourself from the un-
knowns. Think of this fund as your
"safety net" just in case something
happens (ose your job, car breaks
down, broken arm, etc.). Without
this reserve, you may be tempted
- or forced to go into debt. That
may take you years to pay off and
cost you much more in the long run!
Having an emergency fund gives
you more options.
How much savings is enough for
an emergency fund? Most financial
experts recommend having three
to six months living expenses set
aside. Some say you need to save a
year's salary. Others believe $1,000
is sufficient. There is no one right
answer. The amount depends on
your personal situation (job securi-
ty, income level, needs). It's not the
amount that is important. It's the
action of doing something, no mat-
ter how small, to get you started.

One of the easiest ways to get
started is to make it automatic.
Check with your employer and bank
or credit union about direct depos-
its or transfers into savings. You
can also try saving a small amount
each week and put itin your emer-
gency savings account.
Your emergency account should
be easily accessible, just not too
accessible! Do this by establishing a
savings account that does not have
an ATM/debit card and is not linked
to your checking account. You could
also set up a savings account at a
different financial institution (from
your other accounts).
If you are already saving, try
increasing the amount that you
save. The results, over time, will be
amazing.
