Several dozen balloons dazzled like

Elementary School on
Thursday afternoon.
Many carried mes-
sages and thoughts for
Zachary Bass from his
classmates and those of
his sister Theresa.
The Walker fourth-
ZACK BASS grader died last Friday
in a shooting accident.
Rmueral services were
later Thursday.
Several teachers and administrators
spoke before the fifth-graders from The-
resa's class .released
ON THE NET their balloons.

release your; balloon,

family and think about Zack."
"This is a way to think about Zack,"
said Walker principal Jeanine Kirkland.
"He always had a smile. He would be
glad you're remembering him-by doing
something fun."
"When you release your balloon,
thank about the little things you do even,
day," suggested Amy Holloway, presi-
dent of the Walker PTO. "You touch peo-
ple every day You never know how what
you do will affect somebody."
Meanwhile, in Zack's fourth-grade
classroom, his classmates were writing
messages on balloons in preparation for
their own release. Most carried messag-
es of friendship. Some had drawings of
angels or stick figures with arms around
each other's shoulders.
The kids were quick to let visitors
know just what they thought of Zack, and
the sentiments were nearly identical.
"Zack was my best friend," said
Shawn Schmalz. "He was like a brother
tome."
"He was my best friend, too," said Ja-
cob "J.C." Commee.
Shelby Hutto, Kristiyan Yordanov,
Michael Lee and Samantha Rowan all
said the same thing. "He was my best
friend."
"He was everybody's best friend,"
summed up Zaria Johnson.

TRIBUTE TO ZACK: Walker Elementary students release balloons Thursday in honor
of classmate Zack Bass, who was killed Jan. 30 in a shooting accident. Below,
Walker Elementary's Tisha Melton, Zack's teacher, shares memories with her
students before the balloon launch.

Tisha Melton is a fourth-grade teacher at Walker
Elementary School. Zack Bass was one of her stu-
dents.
This week fmy lesson plans were filled with
things you hope no child ever has to learn. Things
no teacher can ever be prepared to teach. I found
that I had enrolled in the professional development
class that no teacher signs up for.
Many times during the past few days, it has
been a child that was my teacher. It has been such
a blessing to see the children in the roles of com-
forter as they helped one another deal with this
tragedy.
Immediately after hearing the news on Friday,
Zack's best friend reminded our class that Zack
was a Christian. He told them that, "Zack is OK."
Zack was always at school he had almost

City adds two new police officers

Crestview News Bulletin
A few brief moments
at Crestview City Hall on
Thursday morning trans-
formed the lives of two
young men from the area.
Upon raising their right
hands and taking the oath
of office, Brian McCallum
of Dorcas and Jerod Wilson
of Crestview became Offi-
cers McCallum and Wilson,
respectively, of the Crest-
view Police Department.
"We take a great deal
of pride in the Crestview
Police Department," said
Mayor David Cadle before
administering the oath to
the department's newest
recruits. "We appreciate
young men and women
who step up and take on
the role of a law enforce-
ment officer."
As Officer McCallum's
wife Ginny looked on, his
son Brendon, 6, pinned the
badge on his father's uni-
form.
As he prepared to ad-
minister the oath to Wilson,
Cadle, the recruit's former
band instructor at Crest-,
view High School, chuckled
and said, "We go way back.
I didn't see this in your fu-
ture!"
t Officer Wilson then re-
ceived his. badge from his
wife Aimee.
As he has in the past,
the mayor thanked the new
officers' families for their
support.
"I believe it is very im-
portant to have the sup-
port of an officer's family,"
Cadle said.
CPD's newest officers
bring to the department
different perspectives
from their life experiences,
according to Chief Brian
Mitchell.
"We know our streets
will be safe,". comment-
ed city council member
Charles Baugh. "Thank
you for protecting our
streets." ,
Council member Linda
Parker, who, with council
member Bob Allen also at-
tended the ceremony, add-
ed, "We'd love to be able to
add more officers, and as
the population grows, we
have to do what we can to
maintain growth in the po-
lice department as best we
can within the city's tight
budget."

Memories, termed
in this modern day
world as 'internal
storage,' are a
wonderful place to go
and think of loved ones
departed from this life.
I am thankful for the
many memories safely ESTELLE
stored in my heart ROGERS
for my beloved Aunt Up on the Hill
Pearlie Strickland.
Laurel Hill neighbors will remember
the family of EQ. and Pearlie
Strickland. She was the homemaker.
He wore many hats: mill worker,
farmer, school bus driver and good
neighbor.
I remember shelling peas with Aunt
Pearlie on the front porch, sitting by
the fireplace or heater spinning stories
of yesteryear and eating from their
bountiful table of delicious homegrown
food. By homegrown I mean ground
plowed, seeds planted, plants weeded,
vegetables harvested (backs aching
and hands sore), cleaned, cooked
fresh and also canned and frozen from
big gardens. Slaughtered animals
for the smokehouse, huge turnip and
mustard patches for selling and giving
away, watermelon fields and rows of
sugar cane, blackberry picking and
scuppernong vines producing sweet
fruit. Chickens in the yard for fresh
eggs and pots of dumplings! Fish
caught from their pond where Aunt
Pearlie would spend many peaceful
hours.
Stray cats always found a good home
at the Strickland resident on the curye
of Steel Mill Creek Road. Uncle would
sometimes take a group of cats to the
vet. His heart was oversized in many
ways.
I remember when Doug and
I arrived at his home before the
ambulance, trying to make him more
comfortable as he lay in his yard. He
told me to get a knife and help the men
cut up the hog they were working on! I
still smile at the thought of him being
more concerned about the pork chops
than his achy-braky-heart!
My parents were recipients of their
kindness, along with other neighbors.
After daddy passed away in 1988, Uncle
and Aunt would often visit with my
mother Madie (she was PQ.'s older
sister) and always bring food from their
table to encourage her to eat more.
Foster children found a haven of rest
with Uncle EQ. and Aunt Pearlie for
many years. Uncle would cry for days
when a child was removed from their
care. He fell in love with each child.
Aunt Pearlie suffered from
Alzheimer's disease during the last
years of her life. The disease finally it
took its toll while she was in Parthenon
Healthcare of Crestview. Aunt *
Pearlie passed away Jan. 29. She was
preceded in death by her husband PQ.

We celebrated Doug's 82nd
birthday several times with visitors

and daughter Jordan Snyder from
Tallahassee visited with us for a few
days.
The Hilltoppers meet the third

Crestview News Bulletin
The Rev. Mark Broad-
head bent earnestly over
his PDA to enter a parish-
ioner's upcoming surgery
date in his calendar.
Pastor Broadhead's
days are divided between
the Presbyterian churches
in Laurel Hill and Crest-
view. Keeping up with both
congregations and their
activities can be tricky.
- Fortunately, Broadhead
always has embraced new
technologies.
From daily devotionals
e-mailed to his flock to up-
loading digital recordings
of his sermons onto the
church Web site, technol-
ogy allows Broadhead to
reach more congregants in
more ways than ministers
just a decade ago ever,
dreamed possible.
"I have a Blackberry
phone, and in it I keep all
my church contacts and
the various calendars for
personal use and church
use," Broadhead said, "I
also use it for tracking pas-
toral care notes, and I have
two translations of the
Bible in it."
Many churches in
Crestview and the north
county have Web sites. A
site's "wow" factor gener-
ally is related to the size of
the church, the programs
it offers and the resources
it can devote to its Internet
presence. -
"I use the Internet
for our church Web site,"
Broadhead said. "Every
week I upload a printed
copy of Sunday's sermon,
as well as an audio version.
I make a digital recording
of the entire service and
burn it to CD and mail it to
our shut-ins."
Technology permeates
many aspects of churches',
ministries.
The First Baptist
Church of Crestview's
new multi-million-dollar
addition was pre-wired for
audio-visual technology.
Services are covered by
video cameras and simul-
cast on large screens in the
spacious sanctuary.
"That works well for the
people in the back of the
sanctuary, especially the
older people," said Chayne
Sparagowski, a student at
Northwest Florida State
College and a "techie" at
the church.
In some churches, the
Norman Rockwell-esque
image of parishioners
standing and holding hymi-
nals is vanishing.
"It's getting to the point
where even hymnals are
being phased out," Spaia-
gowski said.
"It's good and it's.bad.
Some of the older people:
like the traditional method
of holding the hymnal, but
hymnals get hard to read
sometimes," Sparagowski
continued. "With the pro-
jectors, you can make the
words as big as you want."
Technology is already
prevalent in the world of
area churches' younger
members.
"I use technology to,
reach teenagers," said the
Rev. Heath Burchett, as-
sociate and youth pastor at
the First United Methodist
Church in Crestview.
Many pastors find
audio-visual technology
enhances programs from
church potluck dinners to
Sunday school classes.
CHRISTIAN REALITY TV
The Rev. Heath Burchett, associate and youth
pastor at the First United Methodist Church of
Crestview, has adopted a page from popular
culture to reach his young parishioners.
"For the youth, the thing that seems to be
really hot is we're doing a lot of reality TV things
for Christ," Burchett said.
"Reality TV is the big thing right now. There's
a lot of reality TV programs for teenagers on
discipleship and leading people to Jesus Christ.
"They're really attentive because of the way it is
presented. We have our discussions afterwards,"
Burchett said.
In addition, having popular video games,
such as Rock Band, available in FUMC's youth
center, attracts the kids to church programs.
"I think a lot of the youth programs nowadays
try to have some kind of video gaming system in
their youth room," Burchett said. "It's something
the kids are interested in and something they can
do before or after the church's programs."
Tame the butterflies within
and learn to speak in
public without fear.

perfect attendance. So
it is difficult for the stu-

there. I asked the chil-

asked to sit in it during
silent reading time,.
or while writing about
their memories of
Zack.
Our class is writing a
memory book about Zack
and they want to plant
a tree at our school in
memory of him.
I am trying to return
some sense of normalcy
in our classroom, while
still, giving the children
plenty of opportunities to
deal with their loss and
remember their friend.
As teachers, we try
to prepare our students
to get the most out of
life, and losing a student
makes us think of all the
joys in life that they will
not experience. But this
week, our school has
tried to remember what a
joyful life Zack led while
he was with us.
His teachers have
recalled funny sayings
he had and cute things
he did. His friends have
remembered happy times
together and kind things
that Zack did.
Zachary Bass was
a very well-mannered
student that was popular
with students and teach-

knew him knew that his
life was full of faith, fam-
ily fun and friends.
We are all comforted
by that.

"Zack had near perfect at-

Melton said the students

the room for a while. Some
of the kids ask to sit in it
during quiet reading time
or when they were writing
their memories of Zack, she
said.
When school psycholo-
gists came to the class-
room last Friday to break
the news, the kids gathered
one by one on the carpeted
corner section of the room,
where discussions can flow
freely and no one has to
raise his or her hand.
Shawn was one of the
first to speak Melton said,
and reminded his class-
mates that Zack was a
Christian.
"He told them that 'Zack
is OK,'" she said.
"That's something that I
can't say in the classroom but
the kids can say to each oth-
er," Melton said. "They know
what they need to hear."
The kids finished up their
balloon messages.
"Zack was pretty cool and
funny," wrote Samantha.

brothers."
"I still have your pencil
you gave me," wrote Zaria.
"You are in a better place."
Zaria promised she will
keep the pencil "always."
A few minutes later,
Melton's students sat in
their assigned spots on the
playground, each clutching
his or her balloon. Melton
asked if anyone had any-
thing they wanted to say
about Zack.
"He was my best friend
for eight years," said Shawn
instantly. Several others
read their balloon messag-
es as well.
Melton spoke briefly of
Zack's smile, and reminded
her class how he stuck up
for kids who were being
picked on.
"If he everhada disagree-
ment or a scuffle, "Zackwas
the first one to say Tm sor-
ry," Melton said. '"Thanks to
Zack, we've become better
friends this week"
Then she said, "Think
of Zack and when you're
ready, let your balloon go."
At first, one by one, some
balloons trickled into the sky,
and then, in a burst of color,
the rest followed.
"That was beautiful," ob-
served Kirkland as the kids
watched their balloons get
smaller and smaller. "They
got to do what they wanted
to do. Zack would be very
happy."

comes with his son when
he fishes the river and
told him a day or two be-
fore the cold front that he
should bundle up and go
Speckled trout fishing. It
never fails that when it
turns cold the trout turn
on.
Cussing Cousin went
on one of the coldest days
this weekend and fished
off a private dock and
caught a great, stringer of
fish. He said he kept one
of more than 24 inches for
supper and threw back
,many that would have
measured. ,

Boys basketball teams say anything can happen in district tourneys
Randy Dickson
Crestview News Bulletin
After two months of bumping and grinding for posi-
tion, the seedings are set for the boys district basketball
tournaments.
Crestview drew the No. 7 seed in District 1-5A. Lau-
rel Hill came out in the No. 2 spot in District 1-lA. And
the big winner heading into tournament play is Baker,
which took the top seed in the District 1-2A tourna-'
ment.
Of course, none of those seeds matter 'when the
teams hit the court and each game becomes a do-or-die
contest.
Crestview (5-18 heading into Friday's regular season
finale) ended up in a three-way tie with Tate and Choc-
tawhatchee for sixth place in District 1-5A. The Bull-
dogs ended up as the seventh seed in the tournament
as a result of a coin toss. Crestview opens the District
1-5A tournament at Escambia against No. 2 seed Fort
Walton Beach at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Ironically, Niceville and Escambia also were in-
volved in a coin toss to determine the No. 4 and No. 5
,seeds with the Gators winning the flip.'
"For a big district there were a lot of teams real close
to each other," Crestview coach Brian Humphrey said.
"It really tells you anybody could win. Anybody could
come in and play well and compete with anybody they
draw.
"Even a two seed playing a seven seed or a one seed
playing an eight. .., (No. 8 seed) Choctaw, you can't
judge them by their record because they are playing
their best basketball and they are going to be an eight
seed. But they might not be that big of an underdog.
Every game is probably going to be a close game."
The District 1-1A tournament.kicks off Tuesday at.
Paxton, but the Hoboes (11-10 heading into Friday's
game with Crestview) won't hit the floor until Friday at
6 p.m. when they take on the winner of the Rocky Bayou
Christian-Escambia Charter game.
The championship game is set for 7 p.m. on Satur-
day.
Laurel Hill coach Kent Zessin has mixed emotions
about having a bye in the first round of the tourna-
ment.
"We've been getting a bye the last six years," he said.
"The last time we played (on opening night) was the
first year I coached.
"Personally, I'd rather play than getting the bye sim-
ply because we are going to be playing Friday and it will
be a complete seven days before we hit the floor again.
That's a long time for a team, especially this late in the
season, to sit out and not play a game."
It might seem as if the Gators have the easiest road
to the finals as the top seed in the District 1-2A tourna-
ment at Ponce de Leon. The Gators open play in'the.

tournament Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of
the Jay-Ponce de Leon game.
Even so, coach Mike Martello has some concerns.
He knows everyone will be after a Baker team that
was undefeated in district play and boasted a 21-3 re-
cord.
"The last two games I've felt we played pretty flat,"
he said following Baker's win over Laurel Hill on Tues-
day. "That's what happens when you go up against a
highly motivated and pretty darn good team.
"Even when you go undefeated in our district, it
means nothing. If we can't take of business Friday
night, the 10-0 (district) record got us nowhere. It's an
accolade for the kids to go 10-0, but I think they under-
stand there is some business to finish."

GOLF TIPS
FROM THE PRO
High and long
with the
long irons
Jeff Marks
As told to Randy Dickson
As technology has
taken over the game of
golf it seems hitting the
long irons has become a
lost art.
In this week's Golf
Tips from the Pro, Heri-
tage Plantation PGA
teaching pro Jeff Marks
explains the best tech-
nique of hitting the 2-4
irons, or even a 1-iron
- if you still have one
in your bag.
Most people have a
tough time getting their
long irons up in the air,
so today we are going
to talk about a few things
that will help you out.
No. .1, we want to get
a nice sturdy base under
us. It is important to try
and get your feet fairly
close to shoulder width
apart when you are hit-
ting a long iron very
much like hitting a fairway
wood or driver.'
The conventional.
school of thought is shoul-
der width on the outside
of your feet. What I find is
when people do that they
don't take a wide enough
backswing or wide
enough turn to get the
ball up in the air. If you
are struggling, it's a good
,idea to get your stance
almost as wide as when
you play your driver.
Second of all, you
want to play the ball
about two inches inside
your front heel. What that
will allow you to do is
catch the ball with a very
light, bruising divot. That
will get you under the golf
ball and give you plenty
of height.
Next, to get the ball
airborne, we need to
have a wide take away
in our swing. If you look
at the tour pros, they obvi-
ously don't struggle hitting
long irons. The reason is,
as they go back wheth-
er they have a short or
long backswing they
all get very wide.
As we go away, we
want to let the club go
back low and slow, and
try to feel like there's a
good stretch of the lead
arm going back. You
don't have to keep your
lead arm stiff, but you do
want to keep it extended
as best you can.
As we start down from
the top, we want to keep
the arch of our swing nice
and wide.
Going back to impact,
we want to take a slight
divot where we take a
little bit of turf. If we get a
little under the long irons
we hit them nice and
high.
Lastly, to get some air
time on our long irons, we
want to finish our swing
nice and high. A very
high finish with the belt
buckle pointing toward
the target, our weight
on the front foot and
hands pointing in the air
high will get your long
irons heading down the
middle.
