Considering the People Organized
for Community Development (POCD)
is only about ten weeks old, the group's
second indoor soup kitchen was
running with surprising ease Friday
morning.
As some volunteers set out trays of
food and serving utensils in the First
Presbyterian Church of Crestview
Fellowship Hall, others set up tables
and chairs.
Organizer Mia Hagedorn admitted,
"I've always had a real heart for
people."
The reasons for homelessness are
many, she said, and few are homeless
by choice.
"There are so many people on the
verge of homelessness," she said. "They
call me and say, 'I'm about to be kicked
out of somebody's house.'"
Hagedorn estimates the Crestview
area's homeless population is about .

become so desperate they wish they
were incarcerated as well . -. Mia Hagedorn and'POCD vc

Laurel Hill council approves

first reading of water rate increase

Kyle Wright
Crestview News Bulletin

LAUREL HILL- The Laurel Hill City
Council concluded it had no choice.
The council approved a first reading
of an ordinance that would raise the
city's water rates.
The motion was approved- by a
4-1 vote during the council meeting
Thursday night in Laurel Hill City Hall.
Betty Williamson voted against the
ordinance.
The vote came after more than 90
minutes of discussion as several citizens
voiced concerns about the timing and
necessity of the rate increase.
The ordinance will come before the

council for a 'second reading at its next
meeting Jan. 24. If the ordinance passes
the second reading, the rate increases
will take effect.
The proposed rate increase would
raise the minimum water fee by $3.50 a
month for residents and non-residents.
Rates would increase $1.25 a month for
all additional 1,000 gallons after the first
2,000 gallons.
Mayor James Dunn and City
Manager Tim Bolduc told the council
the rate increase was needed because
of concerns about possible action from
outside regulatory agencies, the need
to address past debts, and the need to
fund future projects.
Bolduc and Dunn said an outside

auditor recommended a $5 monthly
rate increase.
"Tim and I felt that was too big,"
Dunn said. "This is what we came up
with to suit our needs. We've done
as much as we can without cutting
personnel."
Citizens who were not in favor of an
immediate increase suggested finding
the needed revenue, through spending
cuts and conducting an audit to precisely
determine the needed revenue.
Those who did not oppose an
immediate increase told the council, "If
it needs fixing, it needs fixing."

"I'm just so grateful
to the members of this

The soup kitchen is
the first of the meals and
services the POCD hopes
to offer the homeless.
Hagedorn hopes
to provide breakfast
for the homeless who
congregate outside day
labor offices in hope of
a day job. Lunches also
are possible, she said.
"Maybe some of the
smaller churches could
help us by preparing
bag lunches," Hagedorn
suggested.
"I just have all these
ideas," she laughed.
"I don't know where
they're going to go, but
we have to start small."
Among the pressing
POCD goals is to
provide an emergency
shelter when nighttime
temperatures drop.
Hagedorn is preparing a
shelter proposal to take
before the city council.
"I don't want to build
a building," she said
assuredly. "There' are
enough buildings in this
city that we could use."
The organization also
is seeking donations
of clothing and adult
bicycles, Hagedorn
said.
And of course, she
added, volunteers are
always needed.
At that point, a
bearded man in a blue
overcoat removed his
hat and peered shyly
into the room. Hagedorn
hastened to greet him
and guided him to the
table.

Turning to her
volunteers she called
out jovially, "Well guys,
this is Angel, and he's
here for some food."
Word was getting
around the homeless
community that there
are caring people ready
to help in Crestview.

What you end up with is a

4 I Crestview News Bulletin RELIGION

FROM THE

PULPIT The Kingdom of God
Michael Green Jr.

For the kingdom of God
is not meat and drink; but
righteousness, and peace, and
joy in the Holy Ghost. -
Romans 14:17
Many people have
tried to combine serving
God with the things of
the world. One popular
teaching amongst
religious circles today is
the philosophy of health,
wealth and prosperity. This
is the idea that God wants
us to enjoy perfect health,
amass great wealth, and
enjoy material prosperity.
According to proponents
of this theology, these
rewards can only be reaped
when Christians faithfully
obey and serve the Lord.
In the above verse, Paul
draws a contrast between
the things of the world and
the service of God. There
were those in the church at

Rome that were disputing
petty things, such as days
of the week and whether
or not it was acceptable
to eat meat sacrificed to
idols. Some thought that.
it was inappropriate to
worship God on any other
day besides the Sabbath.
Others thought they could
worship God any time.
There was one group that
thought it okay to eat meat
sacrificed to idols. Another
group thought it sinful to
eat this meat. Paul writes
that these arguments are
fruitless. He teaches that
these worldly things do not
make up God's kingdom,
Rather, living according,
to God's Word will result
in righteousness, peace
and joy for all'of God's
children. This principle
rings true today.
We cannot equate

financial gain, material
wealth and a life free
from sickness with the
kingdom of God. The fact
of the matter is that our
Christian walk is fraught
with tribulations. In John
16:33 Jesus says that, "In
this world ye shall have
tribulation."
Just a brief examination
of the life of Christ
supports this fact of life.
Jesus was born in the
poorest of conditions. He
had nowhere to lay his
head. During his public
ministry he was constantly
troubled by the religious
elite of his day. Then, he
was crucified for the sins of
his people. His life was full
of turmoil. We will never
be called upon to suffer as
our Savior, but we should
expect tribulation in our
lives. Jesus also said, "If the

world hate you, ye know
that it hated me before it
hated you." (John 15:18).
Our days upon this earth
will be troublesome.
It is a blessing to know
that Jesus also taught he
has overcome the world
(John 16:33b). Enduring
pleasure will never come
from the things of this
world. Meat and drink
only brings a temporary
fulfillment. Sustained
righteousness, peace and
joy come from the Holy
Ghost! This is true in our
families. Some think that
the key to a happy home
is a lot of money in the
bank, a luxury car and a
grand residence. There
are numerous broken
marriages and families
that disprove this theory.
One cannot turn on the
television without hearing

of another occurrence
of family and personal
problems amongst the rich
and famous of America.
The old adage that money
cannot buy happiness rings
true.
The Bible also teaches
that the church is not
identified by worldliness
but by an adherence to
the things of God. In an
effort to fill the pews, many
religious institutions have
adopted worldly practices.
Scriptural worship has
been adjusted to reflect
the changing culture. The
doctrinal truth of the Bible
has been scuttled for the
flesh pleasing "meat" and
"drink" of the world. The
problem with this is that
God is not glorified in this
action. He is unchangeable.
When a church starts down
the path of imitating the

world, it must constantly
reinvent itself to remain
attractive to the ever-
changing culture. If this
continues a church will
fail to have any identity
with the things of God. If
we are going to truly enjoy
the blessings of the Spirit
of God, then we must seek
first the kingdom of God.

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

The antics of witless
criminals, as gleaned
from Crestview Police
Department and Okaloosa
Sheriff's Office arrest
reports:

Not quite how it
happened
A 33-year-old Crestview
woman told police she'd
been robbed of a piece of
property and fingered a
man as a suspect. He was
hauled off to jail.
Then a witness was
found.
Turns out the incident
happened a bit differently.
"They had agreed on a
trade of the property for
a small amount of crack
cocaine," the arrest report
said.
"The (woman) was given
the crack cocaine ... and
ingested it at that time," the
reportcontinued."However,
she became unsatisfied with
the transaction and refused
to give up the property."
After locking her pusher
in her house and "striking
him repeatedly," she called
the cops. After the affair
was sorted out, the pusher
went free and the woman
was arrested for making a
false report of a crime.

Off to a bad start
All the guy did was talk
with his former girlfriend.
It was enough to set off
the present girlfriend,
who slapped him "across
the right side of the head

against his will, causing
two minor scratches," the
sheriff's arrest report said.
She got booked on
domestic violence charges
for battery.
They're both underage
(she's 16), but "have been
living together as if a family
unit ... with permission of
both parents," the report
added.
Looks like that's one
"family unit" doomed from
the start.

Mysteriously
appearing dope
During a traffic stop, the
18-year-old passenger sat
with his back to a deputy
who was questioning the
driver.
Given permission to
search the vehicle, the
deputy found "suspected
cocaine" in the passenger
door pocket.
When the deputy tested
the passenger's hands, they
"field-tested positive for the
presence of cocaine."
But "the defendant
denied any knowledge
of the cocaine and denies
ever putting his hand in the
pocket where the cocaine
was found."
Funny how that nasty
coke just pops up out of
nowhere.

More magically
appearing dope
Drugs are just popping
up all over the county,
apparently.
A 20-year-old Baker
man was arrested for DUI.
Before being taken to jail, he
was searched by a sheriff's
deputy. When the officer
put the man's ball cap back
on his head, half a Lortab

pill fell out.
The guy "admitted the
pill was a Lortab" but "did
not know where the other
half of the Lortab was, and
he did not know where he
got the pill."
Ever the helpful fellow,
the suspect suggested
"maybe he found it or it
could have been from an
old prescription bottle."
However, the only
prescription bottle on
hand, found in the guy's
vehicle, contained a bit of
marijuana. Cigarette rolling
papers were also found-
The guy was arrested
for possession of controlled
substances and possession
of drug paraphernalia.
Officers are presumably
on the alert for drugs
popping out of nowhere.

Boys will be boys
When a Crestview man
tried to stop his 28-year-
old brother from shoving
their mom, the brother
"picked up the victim and
threw him into a window,"
causing him to break three
panes of glass and receive
lacerations that required
stitches.
As the brother with the
anger management issues
walked down Stillwell
Boulevard, a Crestview
Police Officer ordered him
to stop. When the man
acted aggressively toward
the officer, she zapped
him with her Taser for five
seconds.
"After being Tased, the
defendant then complied,"
the officer wrote in her
report.

Jane Doe
at the wheel
When an 18-year-old

Crestview woman almost
caused a traffic wreck, she
was unable to provide
officers with her driver's
license. So she did the next
best thing and provided a
fake name and birth date.
Luckily, the other officer
at scene knew the driver
from previous encounters.
"Defendant states
she provided me a false
name because she knew
her driver's license was
suspended," the arresting
officer wrote.
In addition to more traffic
violations, the woman
was arrested for "resisting
an officer/obstruction by
disguise."

How to impress an
officer of the law
When a 24-year-old
Baker fella was pulled
over for speeding through
Crestview, officers instantly
suspected DUI when they
noticed he "was unable to
stand without swaying"
and "his speech was slurred
and his brown eyes were
bloodshot and glassy."
When the dude refused
field sobriety tests, he
was arrested and began
"to struggle with officers
and eventually fell on the
pavement."
Officers were particularly
impressed when the guy
said a certain judge was his
uncle and threatened the
officers with their jobs.
At the county jail they
were further impressed
when he threatened to
kick the posteriors of other
lawmen.
Citizens are especially
impressed that some people
still think relationships
with judges give them carte
blanche to break the law.

Happy sixth birthday to Bryce Wooten

Happy New Year!
Writing 2008 seems much
easier to write than last
year's 2007. Last year it
took a month to get my
checks dated correctly.
A lone bedraggled
poinsettia sits quietly
catching rays of sun,
a reminder of the past
celebration. The house
is exonerated from all
festiveness. Seems like
new beginnings should
begin with spareness -
even simple fare from
the kitchen after the
extravagances of non-
curbed feasting.
Laurel Hill neighbors
cooked the usual pots of
black-eyed peas, assured
a year-long supply of
greenbacks by cooking
and serving collard
greens, and took personal
inventory, making
resolutions for the New
Year. No, we didn't
follow that sage advice,
nor did we make new
resolutions. We continue
to do the best we can on
a daily basis.
A wise woman was
asked what she would do
to change and improve
herself and her life

if she could do it by
resolution. She answered,
"Forgiveness. Do you
know that the failure to
forgive those who have
hurt us is poison?"
Happy sixth
birthday, Jan. 3, 2008,
to Bryce Wooten!
He enjoyed lunch at
the Laurel Hill Grill

him a special ice cream

John W. Harrison
died, Dec. 31, 2007. The
heart of Laurel Hill
aches for the family of
John W. Harrison. He
was a larger-than-life
man, known in this area
as a faithful man to his
church, community and
school. I remember "Sip"
Harrison as a tall young
man representing Laurel
Hill School playing

basketball. He remained
active in community and
church until his health
began to fail.
Ray Wallace Tyner
died Jan. 4, 2008, in a

Ray Wallace was
one of our Laurel Hill

We remember when

GAMES continued from 10

ROAD continued from 10

they spread out over four
quarters. Their defense has
been wavering a bit in the
latter of the season, but
their district record is one
of the best in the area. Take
the Gators to defeat Jay
on Monday in a squeeze
(rivalries are always
different).
Looking to Laurel Hill
is like looking at dark
and light. For the girls,
their schedule couldn't
have been more difficult,
especially with rookie
experience on thescourt.
The Lady Hoboes are
pushing through their
schedule and preparing

for a brawl with Baker
on Tuesday. The Hoboes
(2-16) can only hope to
finish the season with a
higher win ratio than what
it is now.
Laurel Hill recently lost
back to back against East
Hill Christian and Walton,
and both by a rather large
difference. Some schools
just don't have the veteran
experience they need.
I'm going to have to
go with Baker when the
Gators and Hoboes get
together. Baker has the
experience, it has the
defense, it has the offense
and it certainly has the

momentum.
To a lighter subject,
the Laurel Hill boy's
basketball team is having
a good season. Not quite
the traditional norm (a
lot of wins), but with a
record of 10-6 and 5-2 in
District 1-1A it's obvious
the Hoboes have what it
takes to grab a win over
Ruby J. Gainer in a District
1-1A matchup on Tuesday.
Led by Jeffrey Reese and
Zack Sledge, both of these
players are hoping to
improve on their 23- and
15-point performances
from the game against East
Hill Christian.

games.
The Gators (8-6, 4-1 as
of Thursday night) also
are looking forward to
the FCAT testing break
coming up this week at
Baker.
"We're definitely going
to take that opportunity
to breathe after playing
three, non-stop district
games," Martello said.
"To end the breather we
start up with yet another
district challenge. Now's
the time to see what we
can really do."
The Gators are on their
way to be a strong district
competitor if they keep
winning those crucial
1-2A games. Even with
an 8-6 record overall,
it's all about the district
standings.
"We have to do well
in these coming games,"
Martello said.
"It's going to be a long
week, but we're ready for
it."
Big rivals like the Yellow
Jackets and the Royals are
going to be a gauntlet for
Baker. The Gators beat Jay
51-42 when they met Dec.
13 in their fourth district
game for the season.
Shelley scored 20 points
against the Royal defense
with Josh Rose right
behind with 12.
"Jay is going to be tough
again but we need to do
what we did last time,"
Martello said.
"We just can't play like
we did with Ponce de
Leon."

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin

It was a long quarter
for Baker head coach Mike
Martello. Maybe a little
too long.
For an entire quarter,
all that was heard from
the court were the squeaks
and scuffs of sneakers,
but never a swoosh from
the net.
That is until Ponce
de Leon made a lasting
mistake by fouling Gator
Stephen Shelly.
With less then six
seconds left, Shelley stood
at the foul line as the score
sat even at 39. The ball
glided up and into the
net.
Game.
The Gators came out on
top over Ponce de Leon
40-39 in a District 1-2A
matchup this past Tuesday
night.
"The fourth quarter was
probably the worst fourth
quarter in the history
of fourth quarters,"
laughed Baker coach Mike
Martello.
"We just couldn't shoot
the ball. We went ice
cold."
From starting out with
a 16-point dash in the first

Ann Spann I Crestview News Bulletin
Gator Chad Lawhon moves through a persistent Ponce de Leon defense in a District
1-2A matchup this past Tuesday.

quarter to a two-point end
in the fourth, Martello is
hoping the game against
Ponce de Leon was a
fluke.
"We have three more
district games back to back
to back," Martello said.
"I'm hoping this was
just something out of

the blue and nothing
more than that. We had
turnovers, but they were
mostly in the fourth.
Everything happened in
the fourth, it was bad.
Both sides were trying to
make a shot, but it wasn't
happening. Neither side
was trying to hold the

ball or pass continuously
for a foul. It just was very
poorly played on either
end."
The Baker boys are set
to take on Vernon and Jay
(they traveled to Freeport
on Friday night) in that
key stretch of district

Want to make those game day predictions?

Time to make some
predictions!
After the last two
months we've seen the
local area teams rise to the
occasion and fall far from
victory.,
Teams like the
Crestview girls have been
enduring a stream of roster
problems due to injuries
and junior varsity fill-ins.
The Lady Dawgs play Pine
Forest in their last district

matchup on Thursday.
I'm shooting for
Crestview to squeeze out
on top even though they
'had big troubles keeping
up with a strong Eagle
team in Niceville this past
Thursday. I'm looking at
Liz Graham to continue
her shooting streak (she
scored 17 against Niceville)
and carry it over against
Pine Forest along with
Dee Thompson as another
veteran backing her up.
As for the Crestview
boys' basketball team,
it still has a bit to go.
Even after the Dawgs'
loss against Pace, Cory
Wenrich and Chris Pickett
are still trying for those
double-digits, scoring
eight and nine points,
respectively, against a fast

Pace team. I'm going to
have to shoot for Choctaw
as the better team this
coming Thursday on
Indian grounds. The
Indians are doing a lot
better in the district and
even tournament play.
Coach Mike Martello
and his boys' team over in
Baker pushed by Ponce de
Leon in the final seconds
to come out with another
victory. They're looking at
Vernon and Jay for the next
couple days, both of which
are District 1-2A matchups.
The team did great
against Jay the last time,
and debut their skills
against Vernon today at 6
p.m. (JV) and 7:15 p.m. (V).
Baker's Chad Lawhon
is still hitting his mark
with 15 points scored

last game, with Stephen
Shelley right behind him
along with Josh Rose
calling out the plays. Look
for the Gators to come out
on top for both games.
Coach Kathy Combest
and the Lady Gators have
had an up-and-down
season but are setting
their sights on the end
of the their season. The
team takes on Jay at home
Monday.
Chelsea Combest,
Heather Chestnut and
Alyssa Horn all hit double
digits in Baker's last game,
an easy victory against
Vernon.
The girls basketball
team has always been
consistent with the points

Laurel Hill's Brad Reese makes waves at GCCC

Ex-Hobo basketball player is looking to be a strong contributor to Commodores

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin

Ex-Hobo Brad Reese
has been making a name
for himself throughout his
debut season with the Gulf
Coast Commodores.
"The support from Laurel
Hill at his games is huge,"
fan Jessica Stokes said.
"It's very inspiring for
athletes who are looking to
play in college."
Reese has been getting
plenty of playing time
with the Commodores and
is looking to continue his
performance for the rest of
the season.
Reese tallied a personal
best of 22 points against
Manatee on Dec. 16 and

has pushed those numbers
every game after.
Reese is currently
averaging 15 points a
game. He also scored 15
against Okaloosa-Walton
College recently during a
73-62 loss.
"We would love to see
more about Reese," Stokes
said.
"It's something I want
to open my paper and
read about, and so does
everyone else."
Look for updates on
Reese weekly in our
"Briefs from the Bleachers"
section.
For more information on
Reese and the Commodores,
you can visit their Web site
at wellness.gulfcoast.edu.

Crestview 47, Tate 46:
Kiki Bradshaw scored
six points in the final
two minutes to lead the
Bulldogs to a District 1-5A
win.
Bradshaw ended up
with a team-high 18 points,
