Police: No

suspects in

Walker case
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
Walker Elementary Principal Jeanine
Kirkland said the school will be up and
running when classes resume Monday, just
a few days after vandals caused more than
$10,000 in damage.
"We're getting'.thgs back in order for our
students," Kirkland said. "We'll be ready."
Crestview Police Lt. Jamie Grant said there
were no suspects in the case as of Friday
afternoon.
First grade teacher Rhonda Abernathy,
who discovered the damage, went to school
Wednesday intending to take advantage of
the quiet post-New Year's holiday to prepare
lesson plans, Kirkland said.
When Abernathy noticed the vandalism,
she immediately notified school officials who
summoned Crestview Police.
It was not immediately clear when the
break-in occurred, but according to Grant, the
crime occurred over the recent winter holiday
vacation.
"There was a lot of damage," Grant said.
"It's pretty much widespread. They weren't
partial to any area.,
Before a thorough assessment of damages
and an investigation could be made, a police
dog first was sent through the halls of the
school to assure the perpetrators estriton
the premises.
Investigators already had secured as
evidence two fire extinguishers that had
apparently been discharged in the course of
the vandalism spree.
An investigation revealed the intruders
entered the school by breaking the glass in a
door in or near the cafeteria, reaching in and
opening it using the inside handle..
"Once in the school, it appeared that the
suspects targeted snack and Coke machines
which may hold money, as well as any other

CPD breaks up FedEx theft ring

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

CRESTVIEW Crestview
Police Department
investigators announced
they broke up a thievery ring
operating within the local
FedEx shipping center.
Three FedEx employees
were arrested in connection
with the thefts. Randy L.
Cabaltera, 22, of Crestview;
Jayce A. Vanderford, 18, of
Holt; and Michael T. Moore,
19, of Mary Esther were
arrested and charged with
grand theft.
The investigation began
on Dec. 11 and uncovered
thefts that apparently began
in August 2007.
During the nearly five-
month period, the trio
identified FedEx parcels they
handled that they suspected
would contain video games.
After opening and removing
the contents, they then
resealed the packages with
packing materials located in
the [FedEx] warehouse; CPD
investigator Lt. Jamie Grant

Jayce Vanderford
said.
"The stolen property,
which mostly involved name-
brand video game consoles
and video games, was sold to
a local video game supplier,"
Grant said.
Moore aroused the
suspicions of Kent
Huntsman, manager of the
Game Stop in Mary Esther,
when he sold the store 19
electronic games on Dec. 7,
according to an arrest report
by CPD Investigator Joseph
Earnhardt. Moore received
$141.60 for the games.
"Based on the condition
of the games, Huntsman
contacted FedEx to question

this transaction," the report
stated.
Moore was identified
having shown his driver's
license when selling the
games.
Phillip Martin of the
Crestview FedEx facility
on Brookmeade Avenue,
contacted Crestview Police
on Dec. 11, identifying Moore,
Cabaltera and Vanderford as
possible suspects.
"Approximately $1,400
worth of merchandise was
recovered," Grant said.
"However investigators
believe the total loss to be in
excess of $3,500."
During questioning,

Vanderford admitted
"that he did, in fact, take
electronics, only targeting
packages marked for
companies," Earnhardt's
report stated.
Following questioning,
Vanderford returned 12
stolen electronics, including
a Sony PSP, a Samsung cell
phone, a Transformers DVD,
a PS2 Grand Theft Auto game
and an iPod.
All were recovered from
his home in Holt, the report
said.
Further arrests are
anticipated in the case.
"There will definitely be
more," Grant said.

Consequently, animal

Why license
your pet?
Your pets' license tags do
more than show you are in
compliance with county law.
If your furry friend gets
loose and lost, his chances
of finding his way home when
picked up by animal control
officers increase dramatically
when he is licensed.
Additionally, the
registration fee provides
animal control services when
you find that pesky snake in
your pool or a rabid critter
lurking under the front porch.
From county vaccination
rolls, provided under law by
veterinarians, PAWS keeps
abreast of who owns pets -
and who hasn't registered
them.
Licensing your pets "is
the law," reminded Dee
Thompson-Poirrier, director
of animal control for the
Panhandle Animal Welfare
Society.
"Because of financial
cutbacks, the county is going
to push for .that registration,"
she said.
Pet owners could be
ticketed $20 per pet for
noncompliance as well as
have to pay for the license,
Thompson-Poirrier said.
The registration fee
does help the organization
purchase equipment to
benefit animal lovers,
Thompson-Poirrier said.
"Someday you could need
us, and your $10 helps us
buy the right equipment," she
said. "The fact that your cat
can't get out doesn't mean
you'll never need Animal

Tiller promptly administered rescue

"He actually saved the little boy's

enforcement veteran and president of
the American Federation of Police and

Thursday afternoon, Wise
presented Tiller with the American

FHP barracks.
With his wife Michele at his side,
Tiller's 6-year-old boy, Frank, pinned
the cross on his father's chest, saying
he was "proud because he's my

Thanks to Tiller's quick action,
Kelvin Reed not only got to celebrate

FROM THE

PULPIT Conformed or transformed?
Michael Green Jr.

"And be not conformed
to this world: but be ye
transformed by the renewing
of your mind, that ye may
prove what is that good, and
acceptable, and perfect, will of
God." Romans 12:2
The Word of God
requires Christians to be
different than the world
around them.
When a person is born
again, it is as if the Holy
Spirit takes up residence
and starts remodeling!
The hard, stony heart that
once rebelled against the
Almighty God is now quite
firmly convicted of its sinful
behavior. Now, that very
same heart has a strong
desire to do that which is
pleasing unto the Heavenly
Father.
One excellent example of
such a change is seen in the
response of the multitude
that witnessed Peter's
preaching on the Day of
Pentecost. Acts 2:37 states,
"Now when they heard
this, they were pricked in
their heart, and said unto
Peter and to the rest of the

apostles, Men and brethren,
what shall we do?"
There are some examples
of men being cut to the
heart, but you notice that
these were pricked in their
hearts. These men already
had the Holy Spirit residing
within them, and a change
had been wrought on the
inside. They already were
born again and had the
ability to receive Peter's
message that Jesus was
both Lord and Christ (v.36).
Therefore, the preached
word pricked their hearts.
It was meaningful to
them and it moved them
to action! They no longer
desired to conform to the
traditions and philosophies
of the world, but had zeal to
follow the commandments
of God. This is the heart of
Christian transformation.
To conform means to
follow a certain pattern.
The Apostle Paul warns
Christians not to follow the
pattern of the world. What
are some of the worldly
patterns that we ought to
avoid? The world teaches

that there is no true right
and wrong. Many believe
that morality is subjective
and everyone must come to
their own conclusion about
right and wrong. This is
contrary to the teaching of
the Bible. The Bible teaches
an absolute truth!
The most recognizable
truth in the Word of God is
the Ten Commandments.
These are not the Ten
Suggestions, but popular
culture would have us
to believe they are not
relevant today. This is the
main reason there is such
a push to remove all traces
of this Biblical teaching
from the public eye. We
need to reject this moral
ambivalence and seek the
will of God.
Another pattern that the
world conforms to is the
idea that physical beauty
and wealth are the most
desirable characteristics in
people. This philosophy
has caused havoc amongst
our families and young
people. The world sets the
unreasonable expectation

that a person's worth is
quantified by how they
look or how much they
own. Again, this is contrary
to Biblical teaching.
The ultimate example of
this teaching is the physical
appearance of our Savior,
Jesus. Isaiah 53:2 describes
Jesus as thus, "For he shall
grow up before him as a
tender plant, and as a root
out of a dry ground: he hath
no form nor comeliness;
and when we shall see him,
there is no beauty that we
should desire him."
He had no physical
beauty that people would
be attracted to him.
However, those that were
poor, undone sinners came
unto him in multitudes.
He had no place to lay his
head in this world, yet he
declared that we have a
home with him in Heaven
beyond this world!
There are numerous
other examples that can be
referenced. We are not to
be conformed to the world
but be transformed. To
transform something means

that it undergoes an active
change. When the Apostle
Paul instructs us to be
transformed, he is stating
that we are to let what is
already on the inside shine
forth on the outside. This
is very challenging in our
modern times. Paul calls it
a living sacrifice. Jesus paid
the ultimate sacrifice for
the salvation for his people
on the cross. He paid our
sin debt and secured our
Heavenly home (Matthew
1:21). It is but a small thing
for us to offer our bodies as
a sacrifice of good works to
His honor and glory.
How does
transformation occur?
It comes by studying
the Bible regularly. The
modern phrase, "Garbage
In, Garbage Out" aptly
describes our human
minds. If we are filling
our minds with worldly
filth, worldly conformity
will dominate our lives.
Conversely, if our minds are
regularly renewed with the
principles and precepts of
God's Word then this will

be our outward walk.
Later, Paul writes to the
Philippian church, "Finally,
brethren, whatsoever things
are true, whatsoever things
are honest, whatsoever
things are just, whatsoever
things are pure, whatsoever
things are lovely,
whatsoever things are of
good report; if there be
any virtue, and if there be
any praise, think on these
things."
May we always desire to
think on those things that
are pleasing to God. So goes
our thoughts, so goes our
feet!

Lise D. Lofstrand
Catalog Librarian

The New Year is upon us.
It's that time of year when
it's in with the new and out
with the old.
We at the Crestview
Library are in that process.
We are getting rid of items
that are rarely or no longer
checked out. These go to
The Friends of the Library
for their book sales.
The good news is we
have ordered a lot of new
and popular items for
replacement. These already
have been cataloged,
processed and placed on
the shelf. The rest of the
orders are coming in daily,
and we are getting those
out as soon as possible.
The Crestview Library
has a wonderful circulation
system. It is so much fun
to see patrons get excited
over a new book or a new
movie when they come to
the checkout counter.
Just the other day a young
lady had reserved a movie.
In the process of checking it
out she actually gave a little
jump of joy and said it was
her favorite movie and she
couldn't wait to see it.
That is the kind of reaction
that really makes my day.
It also makes me grateful
to be in a workplace that
has the ability to brighten
someone's day.

PROGRAMS
The Crestview Library, of
course, is not limited to the
items we have for checkout.
We have programs for all
ages.
Preschoolers: "Lap Sit"
begins at 10:15 a.m. on

STAFF PICKS
"Write It When I'm
Gone: Remarkable Off-
the-Record Conversations
with Gerald R. Ford"
by Thomas M. DeFrank
Over a period of 16 years,
President Ford granted
personal interviews with
the reporter DeFrank with
one stipulation: that the
interviews not go public
until Ford's death. With this
stipulation, Ford was free to
be himself. He could let go
of his political persona and
show a completely different.
side of himself. He was
funny, reflective, gossipy
and strikingly candid. By
the time 1991 came along
the two men had bonded,
and Ford truly opened
up about his thoughts
on Nixon and Carter, his
relationship with Reagan,
and never-before disclosed
conversations with Clinton.
973.925 DeE.
"The Oxford Murders: a
novel" Guillermo Martinez
Formatted as a book on CD,
this mystery is one of the
most compelling ones I've
listened to in a long while.
A serial killer appears to
be on the loose. The first
victim is a landlady whose
body is found by a math
student and renowned
math logician, Arthur
Seldom. By coincidence,
Seldom has just written a
book on the mathematics

of serial killers. The killer
leaves cryptic clues at
each- scene. The leading
Oxford logician and math
graduate team up to crack
the code in hopes of solving
the mysterious clues. Well
written and full of suspense,
I highly recommend this
story to lovers of whodunit
mysteries. CD Mys Mar.
"The Vanishing Act of
Esme Lennox" Maggie
O'Farrell I found this book
fascinating. It demonstrates
the consequences of long-
kept secrets, especially
within a family. Iris
Lockhart, a business
woman, is absolutely
stunned when she receives
word that her great-aunt,
Esme, is being released
from a psychiatric hospital
after being held there for 60
years. She never knew her
mother had a sister. Iris only
has her mother, deep into
Alzheimer's disease and
in an institution herself, to
turn to for answers. Feeling
a family responsibility,
Iris takes Esme in. Esme's
story is tragic. The story
is compelling yet tragic. I
highly recommend it. I even
saw some of my family
history and its secrets in the
characters. CD Fic O'Fa.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

past events that people have

STICKING IT OUT TOGETHER

The Crestview girls have a tough second-half schedule as the New Year begins

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin

The Crestview girls
basketball team is getting
ready to jump-start its
season after a bumpy first
half.
Their schedule persists
as one of the tougher ones
in a long time. With the
season about over for the
Lady Dawgs, it's a matter
of collecting their money
and cutting the losses.
"We're finally getting
our full team back," head
coach Sarah King said.
"We had so many injuries
and been overrun."
Overrun is exactly what
the season dealt to the
girls' basketball team, who
is currently 5-12, 3-8 in
district.
It wasn't so much of
problem the first three to
four games.
Once injuries started to
spread like a wildfire, it
was just a matter of time
until King had to call up
the junior varsity players to
fill in.
"At times we didn't even
have enough to play," King
said.
"It was hard to get those
JV girls at a varsity level and
put points on the board. It
really hurt us."
Injuries spanned from
torn ligaments to sprained
wrists to even broken
bones.
At times it cost the
Lady Dawgs more than
four players a game,
incapacitating their starting
lineup completely.
Now, the girls are
looking to finally get into
the niches they were meant
to experience.
With the injuries
subsided and the team
roster full, King received the
green light from everyone

The Crestview girls basketball team is looking to turn up the heat against three
back-to-back district match ups, including their Niceville rivals.

that they're ready to play
ball.
"It's time for us
to strengthen our
fundamentals," King said.
"We want to be a
fundamentally sound team,
and we're looking to play
a higher pace game with
help- side defense."
The Dawgs' man-to-
man defense looked like
it wasn't doing the trick,
which King pointed out
was precisely why she
changed her emphasis at
the last minute.
Crestview ends its
schedule with a triple threat
of District 1-5A matchups
against Tate, Niceville and
Pine Forest.
"We're ready to perform
like we wanted to the whole
season," King said.
"We're confident."

The Patriot Classic: What's the real competition?

I touched base with head
coach Jeff Fowler of the
Crestview wrestling team
about the Patriot Classic.
The team took the trip
up to Northern, Md., on

Tuesday morning and from
what Fowler had told me,
everything went as planned.
"The drive was pretty
uneventful, but we got a
lot of great practice time,"
Fowler said.
"It's going to be exciting
for the boys, and we're
ready."
The Bulldogs look
forward to practicing and
wrestling with some up
state northern styles.
As Fowler has pointed
out before, he didn't see
much of a change in the

style between north and
south, but I know that
wrestling up there is
different just on the fact of
location.
There's always a different
mindset in the north then in
the south, which is excellent
experience for the Crestview
boys to take advantage of.
Fowler wasn't too
concerned on how his boys
will do in the New Year
tournament.
He really wanted to
just have his wrestlers
experience something out of

their element.
When I contacted Fowler
on Friday they were just
about to do weigh-ins, and
he sounded confident and
up-beat.
"Hey, you know we're
ready to get things rolling,"
Fowler said.
"It's time to get on the
mat."
Look at next week's
issue for full coverage of the
Patriot Classic and a view
of what's to come for the
Bulldogs in the latter stages
of their schedule.
