new trash collection service
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin "~ .-
CRESTVIEW The City of
Crestview signed a contract for a
new trash collection firm at its Dec.
17 franchise hearing.
Waste Pro, of Florida, Inc.,
immediately began working with
Waste Management, the current
contract holder, to assure a smooth
.transfer.
WVaste Management's original
contract with the city charged $13 per
home per month for garbage pickup,
according to Mayor David Cadle.
With the contract due to expire at the
end of the year, the nationwide firm
submitted a new request for $38 per
home.
Cadle said Waste- Management
cafne down to $26 during the
Contract discussion, but by' then the
-city had opened the contract to other
bidders. Waste Pro, which handles
garbage collection at other Florida
communities including Tallahassee,
offered $19 per home per month.
"Their letters of reference from
mayors and city managers are
just glowing," Cadle said. "With
their rdsumr, the city council felt
corihf rtable going with them.
"We feel real good about this. This
will be good for the city"
The transition from one garbage
collection firm to a new one offers
many challenges, but Cadle praised
the smoothness with which the
process was going and expressed
his relief that minimal snags seem to
have occurred.
A major part of the transition,
which becomes effective Jan. 2, is Ann Spann I Crete News Bulletin

The clinking of coins in the Salvation
Army red kettle- jingled in the holiday air
in north Okaloosa County this month.
The Fort Walton Beach Salvation
Army, which also serves north Okaloosa
County, said kettle donations were on
pace to surpass the totals from 2006.
Unfortunately, sometimes angels'
wings can't spread quite far enough.
The organization said contributions
to mail appeals and the Empty Stocking

accepts contributions year-round

Fund are down compared to 2006.
Salvation Army branches across the
nation also reported problems with
people committing to contribute to angel
tree campaigns, but not returning the
pledged gifts.
"Everybody has that problem," said
Jennifer Macon of the Fort Walton Beach
Salvation Army. who said the same issues
occurred with local angel tree efforts.
Makesha Peterson of Crestview said
her family is going through some tough
times, so she had her four children signed
up on an angel tree. Three of her children

received gifts. One did not.
"I appreciate what I did get," Peterson
said. "But I had one of my kids not get
anything, and I was really heartbroken
by that."
Christmas has come and gone, but
Macon said it's never too late to contribute
to the Salvation Army's efforts.
The organization conducts toy drives
throughout ,the year. Toy donations
are distributed to fire victims and at
holidays.
"You can always donate," Macon
said.

FWB man wins Fisher House car

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW A Fort
Walton Beach senior citizen
got something special in his
stocking this year.
Well, in his driveway, to
be more precise.
Robert Renlie's raffle
ticket was the one pulled
from the trunk of a 2008
Chevrolet Impala by
regional media personality
Laura Hussey last Friday.
Renlie won the car, but
the big winner was Fisher
House of the Emerald
Coast.
More than $26,250
was raised by the raffle.
Proceeds benefit the home
for families of servicemen
or military dependents
being treated at Eglin Air
Force Base Hospital.
"Fisher House is a
tremendous benefit,
helping families in times
of tremendous need," said
Col. Robb Rennie, Eglin
hospital's administrator.
The car raffle was a huge
success toward raising
both awareness of the
project, as well as raising
some of the estimated $2
million needed to build the
home and provide initial
operating expenses, said
Trecia Chedister, a director:
for Fisher House of the
Emerald Coast.

Ann Spann I Crestview News Bulletin
Local news personality, Laura Hussey drew the winning ticket for the 2008 Chevy
Impala at Award Chevrolet on Friday.

"We did really well," she,
said.
"Thanks to Award
Chevrolet's donation of the
car, we're going to deposit
quite a large amount into
our Fisher House account,"
beamed treasurer Theresa
Kemp.
Kemp said Bob Lynn,
another Fisher House
director who. championed
ticket sales, has not had
a ,weekend off for two
months.
"Thank God you're
giving away the car," Lynn'

joked Friday morning. "I'll
finally get a weekend off!
Then we move on to the
next fund-raiser."
Air Force SSgt. Tim
Estrada is another Fisher
House volunteer who has
devoted "every weekend"
toward the raffle's success
and eagerly attended the
drawing.
"Fisher House is
an organization that I
personally like volunteering
for," said Estrada, a
Crestview resident. "This
is something I've been

waiting to see. How could I.
miss this?"
After Chedister, Lynn,
Rennie and Kemp in
succession repeatedly
stirred the trunk full of
tickets, Hussey reached
into the mass of paper slips
and triumphantly held aloft
ticket No. 1927.
Lynn promptly whipped
out his cell phone and called
Renlie. The 84-year-old,
who "never won anything
more than a $20 bill" in
his life, at last had hit the
jackpot.

"It gives you a lot cleaner

"When we go down

cleaner look to the city."
Homeowners should
see no interruption in

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Participants set a Crestview parade record this year

On behalf of the Main Street
Crestview Association and the
City of Crestview, the sponsoring
entities in-recent years of the
annual Downtown Crestview
Christmas Parade, I would like to
express deep appreciation for the
assistance provided by some hard
working volunteers that helps to
ensure our city continues to have
successful Christmas Parades
year after year.
There has been an annual -
Christmas parade in the
downtown area every since 1958.
Just as it was 49 years ago and
has been through the years since
then, there is always a seemingly
small group of dedicated
people that will step forward
and do whatever is necessary
to bring delightful holiday
entertainment and excitement
that can be enjoyed by all of our
area residents, especially our
youngsters. This year's parade
had a record number of entries
(169), including 71 colorful floats.
Parades with as many entries
as we've seen in very recent

years can only be successful if
there is a lot of good planning,
coordination and, most of all,
some volunteers that will assist
with the staging and line-up
requirements on the actual event
day. '
This year's group of volunteers
consisted of some first timers,
some that have assisted for a
few recent years and some that
have been involved almost every
year for the last decade or longer.
Some volunteers had specific
tasks to accomplish, while others
were involved from the first
stages of planning until the event
was successfully concluded.
A very special recognition and
. appreciation is extended to the
local volunteers that assisted in
one or more ways with this year's
parade efforts. Specifically, these
volunteers are Grace Ferdon, Pam
Golden, Angela Ferdon-Cotton,
Larry Woolley, Bob Lynn, Greg
Casey, Mickey Rytman, Julia
Phillips, Ron Gautney, Frances
Gautney, Cindy Harris, Cindy
O'Louglin, Sean O'Louglin,

Nancy Bass, Ellis Conner, Mac
McKendree, Lisa Kimbrough,
Marsh Johns, Ann Spann, Kelly
Humphrey, Wayne Steele,
Lindsey Rose, B. J. Thomhave,
Cal Zethmayr, Ken Nielsen,
Jerry Milligan, Gloria Fortner,
Connie Mason, Kathy Bailey,
Ileana Kertis, Kathy Barrow and
Beverly Brunson. Some of these
volunteers have gained expertise
over the last several years to
make things go smoothly in the
weeks before and on the tactual
day of the annual Christmas
parade.
Appreciation is given for the
positive event coverage from all
the local media. Additionally,
the large number of event-
involved employees from the
City of Crestview's Police and
Public Services Departments,
as well as the seven military
volunteers from Eglin Main,
Hurlburt Field and Duke Field
(Torry Brittain, Nichelle Stanley,
Robert Love, Marquita Scruggs,
Darlen Saget, Timothy Estrada
and Minty Knighton) are.to be

recognized and commended
for their support. All rendered
valuable assistance to our local
parade volunteers, especially in
the staging, line-up and security
efforts prior to and during the
parade.
Again, heartfelt appreciation
is extended to all the dedicated
volunteers for their active role
in bringing about another very
successful Downtown Crestview
Christmas Parade. I'm sure some
of these volunteers are personally
known by many of the citizens
of the Crestview area, and I
encourage the citizens of our
community to individually thank
theses folks for a job well done.
Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year greetings are wished
to all from the Main Street
Crestview Association and the
City of Crestview.

Dear Editor:

Commissioners (Florida Fish
& Wildlife) did the right thing
at the recent meeting in Key
Largo when they unanimously
voted to defer action on
whether to downlist the
beloved Florida manatee from
Endangered to Threatened,
while voting to go ahead with a
manatee management plan.
Much consternation from
stakeholders as to the wisdom
and consistency of the present,
crritpria havp nut in doubt th

validity of the listing process
which.was changed several
years ago to try and make
the state process more like an
international process.
The result has been
confusion and contention .
between the agency and those
who have been its most ardent
supporters.
The manatee put this listing
process in the spotlight like
no other species. Along with
the panther, the manatee is
a much-loved icon of what
is left of wild Florida. The

docile sea cow, most scarred
by encounters with boat
propellers, is a living symbol
of what we still retain as to
natural resources.
Both the seasoned and new
FWC Commissioners made a
good first showing in voting
to keep the manatee on the
Endangered list, and we much
appreciate their thoughtfulness,
as well as the: leadership shown
by Governor Charlie Crist.
The Florida Wildlife
Federation includes many .
-conservation-minded hunters

and anglers who enjoy boating
and using our water resources,
but who also want to ensure
that the manatee is here for
future generations to enjoy.
As we move forward on
revisiting the listing issue, it
is hoped all sides can work
together and come to mutual
agreement.

Sincerely,

Manley K. Fuller III, President
Florida Wildlife Federalion

Looking back at 2007 and ahead to 2008, Pt. 1

Lou Frey

In the next few articles I will
try to summarize the political
happenings of '07 and what
they mean, if anything, for the
elections in '08.
But first let me tell you my
holiday wish for our country.
My wish would be to have a
president run and at the same
time announce he or she will
be a one-term president. The
President would lay out an
agenda which will include
reforming Social Security,
Medicare and Medicaid. The
President would take on the
deficit, balance the budget
and would also pass an
immigration bill. The President
would come out with a
national energy plan which
would include conservation,
alternative energy research
and in the interim the
willingness to increase the use
of present energy sources like
coal, gas, oil and even nuclear.
The plan would guarantee
energy independence in 2040.
The President would speak to
the American people and try to
enlist members of both parties

in this crusade for survival. I
know it is wishful thinking,
but the problems I have laid
out are not going to go away.
For instance, Social Security,
Medicare and Medicaid will
take up over 75 percent of our
budget in 40 years. We are now
importing close to 60 percent
of our oil and gas prices are
over $3 a gallon. The number
of illegal immigrants continues
to rise. These problems will
ruin our country if not solved.
Each year that goes by
makes it more difficult to solve
these monumental issues.
Solving some of the most
pressing domestic problems
will make it easier to address
our problems around the
world. My biggest surprise in
2007 was how the Democrats
in the House worked so
effectively, not on legislation,
but on helping their newly
elected 2006 candidates
for the '08 election. As has
been true for many years,
the party in power always
raises more money than the
party out of power. This year
the Democrats have been
outraising the Republicans

by close to a 2-to-1 margin.
Even more impressive is the
fact that the ten Democratic
House members who won
by the smallest margin now
have well over $1 million in
the bank. In Florida this is
true. In the former Mark Foley
district, Tim Mahoney (D-FL)
has raised well over $1 million
and is continuing to bring in
additional money.
The Democrats also have
made sure that the new
Democrats and those in
trouble have some "legislative
successes." For instance,
Mahoney and Ron Klein
(D), who was elected in the
district held for many years by
Republican Clay Shaw, were
sponsors of a catastrophic
insurance bill that would be of
great aid, if it becomes law, to
the residents of Florida. This
bill cleared the House and
gave them great exposure in
their districts, both of which
occupy part of the vulnerable
eastern shoreline of Florida.
Finally and this in my
experience is unprecedented,
the Democrats ensured that the
newer members got plus-ups

and in some cases more plus-
ups than senior members. This
was not true regarding the top
Democrats on appropriations,
such as John Murtha (D-Pa.),
but in other cases, such as in
Mississippi and Florida, senior
Democrats took a step back
and let the additional plus-
ups go to the new members.
What this demonstrates is
the determination of the
Democratic leadership to keep
and increase their control in
the House and the fact that
senior members are willing to
give up some local projects in
order to keep their positions of
power.
The only black cloud on
the horizon for the Democrats
in the House is the potential
that Hillary Clinton will be
the Democratic nominee. If
she is and I believe this will
happen on Feb. 5, she will
have the highest negatives of
any presidential nominee since
they began polling.

BORDER Mad Bavaria
SCROSSINGS Mad about King Ludwig's Bavaria
Brian Hughes

HOHENSCHWAN-
*" GAU, BAVARIA We
stepped off the bus into
the cool, crisp, clean air of
a Bavarian winter morning.
It was the day after a sub-
stantial snowfall, and this
little village was a wonder-
land of sugar-frosted fields,
fir trees and the quaint ar-
chitecture my cousin once
dubbed "Disney Baroque."
Our Gdstehaus "guest-
house," or bed-and-break-
fast was a short ten-min-
ute walk from the bus stop.
Haus Weiher is run by the
gracious Frau Oswald, who
speaks little English but is a
consummate hostess.
Our room was spot-
less, had a good-sized
bathroom, and best of all,
opened onto the large bal-
cony with a beautiful view
of Neuschwanstein Castle.
Each morning began in
the warm, cozy breakfast
room. Nobody does break-
fast, my favorite meal, quite
like Germans. Frau Oswald
filled the table with fresh
rolls, grain bread, butter,
jams, honey, an assort-
ment of cheeses and cold
cuts, pastries, tea and juice.
Anything we (as well as the
people at the next table)
didn't finish, she insisted
we take along for snacks.
We visited the "King's
Nook," as this corner of
Bavaria is known, shortly
after New Year's, a per-
fect time to be in Europe.
Christmas decorations are
till aglow, the snow is usu-
ally postcard-perfect, but
tourists have not invaded
for the skiing season yet.
We had both been to
Neuschwanstein before. It's
probably the most visited
tourist attraction in Europe.
Yet I love the mystique of
the castle and its builder,
the beloved late-19th-cen-
S tury ruler, King Ludwig
II, a romantic often called
"Mad" King Ludwig.
This time we wanted to
explore beyond the fairy-
tale charm of his most fa-
mous legacy. We began
with a wholesome hike up
the road toward the castle.
The' region offers kilo-
meter after kilometer of
free public hiking paths
and cross-country ski trails.
Many paths were shoveled
clear of snow.
An overlook behind the
castle offered a breathtaking
view of Hohenschwangau
and its ochre-colored hill-
top castle, Ludwig's child-

hood home.
Our path took us to the
MarienbrUicke, a bridge
that affords one of the
most spectacular views of
Neuschwanstein. Alas, the
paths beyond the bridge
were not cleared.
Back down the hill, we
followed the footpath over
to Schwangau, a larger vil-
lage across the valley, where
we rented cross-country
skis.
(Make sure your bind-
ings work before you leave
the shop! Mine didn't. My
buddy, not realizing my left
ski kept coming loose, was
halfway across the valley
before realizing he'd left me
behind.)
While not difficult to
master, cross-country ski-
ing is a more vigorous
exercise than it looks.
Fortunately, we found the
Kristall-Therme, a family-
friendly spa with several
pools, whirlpools, saunas,
etc. We enjoyed wallowing
in the outdoor salt-water
pool, only three feet from
the snow banks around us,
New Age music lilting from
underwater speakers.
Rejuvenated and relaxed,
we walked the half hour
back to Hohenschwangau
for dinner. As we left the
village streetlamps, floodlit
Neuschwanstein served as
a beacon in the clear winter
night, dominating the val-
ley like its builder's aura.
There is a large selec-
tion of restaurants near
Haus Weiher catering to
the castle's many visi-
tors. Proprietors easily can
command a hefty price for
meals as their audience is
essentially captive in this
rural area.
Surprisingly, they don't.
Indulging in traditional
Bavarian fare, including
roast pig knuckles and
dumplings, we found the
cuisine excellent, the por-
tions substantial, yet the
prices reasonable.
We set out the next morn-
ing for the town of Ffissen.
The walk through silent
pine forests, along country
roads and across the river
took about an hour and was
simply beautiful.
Ffissen exudes the charm
of a quaint provincial capi-
tal. Its mantle of fresh snow
accentuates the lovely old
buildings.
The Schloss (palace) is a
remarkable exercise in the
art of architectural trompe

l'oeil. Its ornate carvings
and stonework appear viv-
idly realistic until viewers
realize it is all, in fact, elab-
orate flat artwork.
Below the Schloss is
the opulent Benedictine
Monastery of St. Mang,
which overflows, as do
most Bavarian and Tirolian
churches, with the gorgeous
excesses of the regional
Baroque.
We explored churches
and the main cemetery be-
fore heading, still on foot,
out to the Festspielhaus,
Germany's newest and
most technically advanced
theater. The lavish musical
Ludwig2 was playing at that
time, but the house now
iVprimarily runs traveling
productions in repertory.
On our last day in
Bavaria, we visited the
pilgrimage church of St.
Coloman, which sits orna-
mentally in the middle of
a vast field. (It was closed,
and usually is.)
Over in Schwangau, we
visited the combination
gas station, restaurant,
souvenir shop and gro-
cery store. Here we found
great mementoes for less
than we'd pay at the pleth-
ora of tourist shops in
Hohenschwangau.
We also bought bread,
sausage and cheese for
lunch. Later we ducked

out of the bitter wind for a
tasty al fresco very fres-
co! lunch in a school bus
shelter before returning to
the Kristall-Therma for an-
other soothing wallow.
The next morning we
bid a fond "auf wiederseh-
en" to Frau Oswald and
one of the world's most
idyllic, magical, roman-
tic and hospitable places,
vowing to return to fur-
ther explore the realm of
Ludwig II.

Preserves at Campton going green

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

LAUREL HILL When
a realtor tells you about a
home deal that sounds too
good to be true, it probably
is. Some real estate deals
come with more catches
than Yogi Berra.
But not only are the
Preserves at Campton going
to be modestly priced,
according to their builder
they are also going to be
cheaper to live in.
Located off State Road 85
and Senterfitt Road between
Crestview and Laurel Hill,
preliminary site work began
earlier this year.
Committed to producing
a "green" community,
the developers, Emerald
Coast Partners, have been
searching for just the
right builder to meet their
criterion of well-built,
inexpensive-to-live-in yet
affordable homes.
. They found it in
American Durahomes, an
Atlanta-based company
that has experience building
affordable homes in South
Africa, the Caribbean and
Asia. The Preserves will be'
one of their first domestic
projects.
"What makes usdifferent
than the more traditional
buildings you see in this part
of Florida is we incorporate
an actual concrete and
steel superstructure for the
house," explainedAmerican
Durahomes' Barclay Burks.
Burks was quick to assure
potential buyers "we are
iiot a prefabricated building
system. We actually
construct our houses on
site."
From foundation to roof,
the entire home is reinforced
all around with steel "rebar,"
making it one big, unified
building system.,
"To use General Motors'
term, you have a 'unibody'
construction all around,"
Burks said.
The system has a lot
of 'racking strength,' or
resistance to side-to-side
motion, allowing the

homes to stand up to severe
weather, winds and even
earthquakes.
There is a 10-inch cavity
in the walls through which
plumbing, ductwork and
electrical systems are placed,
"then a proprietary infill is
poured in," Burks said.
American Durahomes',
filler material provides such
exceptional insulation that
"you could put a blowtorch
on the wall outside and
never feel it inside," Burks
said. "Laboratory tests
show between an R-35 and
40 value."
(As comparison, an
efficient modem refrige-
rator has an R-value around
30.)
This results in heating
and cooling bills expected to
be less than $50 per month
at current rates.
Though strong, the
homes planned for
the Preserves bear no
resemblance to the military
"pillbox" one may imagine.
"We finish the homes in a
traditional method," Burks
said. Inside, wall finishes,
"look just like a sheetrock
wall. You can hammer nails
in it. You don't have to do
a lot of drilling to hang
pictures."
Roof decks will be
finished in either concrete
board, often known' as
Hardiplank, or plywood.
Fiberglas or vinyl
%windows that "look just like
what you're using now,"
Burks said, will provide
further thermal insulation
while 'being resistant to
breakage by- anything from
flying hurricane debris
to the boy next door's
baseball.
Interior fixtures will
include wooden cabinets,
and wooden and tile
flooring.
"From an appearance
standpoint you would
notice no difference from a
regular house except it's a
lot prettier," Burks said.
In addition to the energy

Another advantage is the
houses' soundness.
"The reason our name
is American Durahomes is
our homes are extremely
durable," Burks said
proudly. "There's no need to
ever change the appearance
of our homes unless you
want to change the color.
There's no need to repaint,
and no, need to add a new
. roof after 12 years."
Burks said the"
construction method is'
also termite proof, mold
and mildew resistant, has
an extremely high sound
coefficient (go ahead, blast
that stereo!) and is extremely
fire retardant.
There are more good
reasons to welcome
American Durahomes to
the north end of Okaloosa
County.
"We plan every single
possible way to buy supplies
locally," Burks assured area
contractors. "We also will
endeavor to employ locally.

The vast majority of our
employment base does not
need to have a trade skill
(excepting plumbers and
electricians).
"Beyond that we will
train our own crews," he
said.
Preserves at Campton
homes will sell for between
$160,000 and $190,000 in
first phase, said Ken Wright
of Emerald Coast Partners
and ReMax Southern, the
development's realtor.
The smallest home to be
offered is 1,412 square feet;
the largest is 1,857 square
feet. While several "stock"
home plans are available,
"we have complete
flexibility in terms of floor
plans and designs," Burks
said. "We can build towers
and round rooms, even
mansions."

"mission is to stay in a truly
affordable market place,"
Wright said.
Despite the many perks
of their home construction
method, Burks remained
modest.
"It isn't that we're

geniuses. We use a lot of
very effective materials and
we employ a management
structure that lends
itself to the low-income
marketplace. We don't have
a huge overhead. It really is
a basic industry," he said.

Man on a mission to fix computers

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

Crestview residents on a
budget who need their old
computer fixed but can't
afford the often high fees
have an alternative.
Mark Long, owner of
Computer Concepts, serves
as a volunteer "I.T. guy"
at the Harvest Vineyard
mission at 544 Main St. In
addition to keeping the
mission'scomputersystems
up and running, he repairs
computers for members of
the community.
The Ohio native, who
came to Crestview a year
ago, charges a basic $25
fee to work on private
computers, "but no matter
how long it takes me, it
doesn't go over $75," Long.
said.
Long understands
people on tight budgets
can't always afford high
computer repair costs, but
still can't be without their
machines.
"I know people can't
always afford to fix it," he
said, "but they just want it
working."
Long also will begin
basic computer classes for
novice users in January,
teaching basic things such
as playing music, copying
files, opening a disc, and

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin
Crestview setter Jessica
Long has made her college
decision, and that choice
was made final when she
recently signed her letter-
of-intent with Pensacola
Junior College recently.
Long played four years
for the Bulldogs, and her
signing was attended by
coach Pete Pena of PJC
along with Crestview
coaches Emily Trepack and

Sam Nimpchaimanatham.
"I'm very excited about
the signing," Long said.
"I'm grateful for the
opportunity to play for the
Pirates."
Long is looking to be
a strong addition to the
Pirates after a rough season

Ann Spann I Crestview News Bulletin
Jessica Long signs a letter of intent as her parents
Jannie and Johnny Long look on.

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin
It takes a special
someone to bring a team
of people together and
all work toward a single
goal.
It's called being a
leader.
And from what
Crestview wrestling
coach Jeff Fowler pointed
out, seniors Kyle Miller
and Nick Panucci .are
exactly those leaders.
"They both really know
how to reach the kids on
a level that I can't touch,"
Fowler said.
"They're gentlemen,
great wrestlers and
always help anyone with
problems on the mat."
Kvle Miller., who has
been in the camera eye for
the last twow.&eks in his
path to 100 career wins,
has been wrestling for the
last four years. His vision
of being the senior team
captain is a little different
than the usual.
"It's my passion to be a
wrestler," Miller said.
"Wrestling issomething
you have to work at,
and I want to help my
teammates in any way I
can. If there's something
they need help polishing,
then we go over it
together on the mat. I've
seen a lot of guys come
and go simply because
they lose matches, and
that's not the way to go
about wrestling. You have
to be confident and ready

to learn."
And learning they
certainly already have,
starting off this season
with multiple bangs. Nick
Panucci has been one of
those cannonballs.
Panucci has been
consistently been a strong
wrestler with more than
15 pins to date.
His success in meets
seems to shed off on

others.
"Kyle and I work with
the guys a lot. I motivate
myself before the matches
with some music and a
solid mindset," Panucci
said.
"It rubs off on the others
I think. Leadership is a
huge thing, especially in
wrestling and with Coach
Fowler sticking with us
through it all, we're really

coming together."
Even though Crestview
is at it's peak in talent,
there's still a lot to
organize when it comes
to leading a team of
wrestlers.
"We have to spend a
lot of time practicing.
You don't practice, you
don't learn and you don't
succeed," Miller said.

Pam Golden
Cresiview News Bulletin
Ya' gotta' love it when a
plan comes together.
That's how Crestview
High School boys soccer
coach Brian Massey was
feeling Wednesday night
after the team pulled off
its second consecutive win.
The Bulldogs beat Pine
Forest High School 3-0 on
Dec. 18 then came back 24
hours later to take down the
Choctawhatchee Indians
2-0.
Both games were at home

and the Choctawhatchee
game was a fitting tribute
on Senior Night, honoring
four-year players Casey
Anderson, Rusty Golden
and Philip Piaget.
In the Pine Forest game,
Anderson scored with 29:21
minutes on the first half
clock, then hit the net again
about four minutes later to
make the score 2-0. In the
second half, Golden fired
into the net with 37:41 on
the clock.

coach Ronnie Smith
is taking his team
to a new year and
a new look on the
season.
Laurel Hill has
always been a
consistent team.
Since coach Kent
Zessin stepped
down due to medical
hardships, coach
Smith has been
handling the reigns
nicely.
The team is
communicating a lot
more, and passing
the bpll around
enough to keep the
opposing team on
their toes.
What -cari 'the
Hoboes do to get
really serious about
the rest of their
schedule?
Jeffrey Reese and
Harold "Beast" Bielec
need to rub a little of
their enthusiasm to
the rest of the team.
Their drive
against the Gators
was a huge change
compared to past
games.
I know that
hometown rivalries
get the blood flowing
and the heart
pumping, but Laurel
Hill got organized
on the court last
Thursday night.
Both teams had an
immense amount of
talent, but the school
that wanted it more
won it in the final
run.
The Hoboes come
back after a New
Year and take on
East Hill Christian in
a District 1-1A match
up.
East Hill gave
them a run for their
money last time,
but it's organization
the Hoboes need
to remember and
utilize against their
next opponent.

Ann Spann I Crestview News Bulletin
Hobo Jeffrey Reese rises up for a jump shot over
Baker's Josh Rose in the last minute

"I give it my all and
100 percent out there
in matches. If you put
your heart into what
you want to succeed
then it's yours for the
taking."
It's those
inspirational words that
motivate the Bulldog
team in driving through
their season schedule.
Miller and Panucci
both not only push
themselves but also
look forward to helping
those who are less
confident on the mat.
"Confidence is a big
thing, and you have to
get a hold of it," Panucci
said.
Confidence is a
subject that always has
been a factor in any
sport. The seriousness
is always there. At
times it's hard to escape
being pressured.
Coach Fowler has a
different perspective
on the matter when
he refers to his two
seniors.

"Listen, I just tell
them to do their best
and have fun," Fowler
said.
"That's all you can
do at this level, there's
no need for anything
else. This is a family
atmosphere and those
two boys really bring it
out in the team."
Miller and Panucci
will keep wrestling.
That's what they love
and what they plan on
doing once they leave
from Crestview High
School.
Their determination
to push others to their
potential will be a
keepsake for younger
teammates to carry on.
The Bulldogs are
slowly making their
way through a short
season.
With the Beast at the
Beach duals in the past,
it's only fit to look at the
future and the Patriot
Classic at Northern,
Md.

With the passing of another year, we reflect on the events that changed our
lives-some of them good, but for some, there have been better years.
Fortunately, time has a way of healing, and letting us go forward-a promise
of better years to come. Whatever last year brought you, we want you to know
our family's thoughts are with you for a healthy and happy new year.

going into the Pine Forest game
and the team really started
coming together," Massey said.
"We started playing as a team."
The final score didn't
accurately reflect how well the
team played, with most of the
action at the goal.
"'We could have blown the
other team out," Massev said.
"We need to work on some of our
crosses and finishes. But, overall
it's really a big improvement."
The Choctawhatchee game
was Round 2 on the same
theme. David Pyle started the
scoring with a solid goal about
20 minutes into the first half.
Anderson followed about 10
minutes later. The half-time
score was 2-0; the second half
was a brutal, scoreless battle.
The game was' a complete
reversal of the first match up
this season between the Indians
and the Bulldogs, when the
game was played in Fort Walton
Beach and the Indians got the
win with the same score, 2-0..
The Dawgs, Massey said,
"played like they should have
been playing all year.
"They played outstanding,"
he said.

A pair of scissors, thread, and a needle are all it takes to fix a torn hem

before it's completely unraveled. Your veterinarian can use those same

tools to "fix" your dog or cat and help reduce the pet overpopulation

problem. It's a simple solution to prevent millions of unwanted animals

from being born to a fate that often ends with a needle of another kind.
