Merchant and his fellow prisoners
were unaware of how World War II was

beyond heavily censored letters and
the occasional Red Cross parcel.
Then something happened at
Christmastime in 1943.
Much t6ohis surprise Merchant, now
a longtime, Crestview resident, got
another letter. Not just any letter, but a
very special one from his stepmother.
It Was the first one he had gotten
from his father and stepmother since he
had been taken captive in 1942.
The letter would open his eyes. At the
verv end, Alta Merchant, his stepmother,
signed "Mlom" in parenthesis.
. "I have to admit I was taken aback
by her signing the letter "Morn', instead
of Alta, as she had signed the other
letters," said Merchant, who still has
the letters on while. "She never showed
that sortof kindness and tenderness
toward me before."
He then w ent on to describe the.
intense hatred he and his siblings
harbored against her.
"To me she was never my mom, and
had never allowed me to call her that.
I had grown up addressing her by her
given name, or 'my dad's wife.'

Ben Stein's Christmas commentary
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
Just in time for Christmas,
our friend Mike Hanley,
proprietor of Buffalo's Reef
in Fort Walton Beach, sent
me an e-mail with "Ben
Stein, Re: Christmas" as the
subject.
"The following was
written by Ben Stein
and recited by him on
CBS Sunday Morning
Commentary," it began.
Some e-mail hoaxes I
receive are so poignant or
meaningful, I fervently
wish they weren't hoaxes,
and wish I didn't have to
debunk them.
Happily, "the version
widely circulated via e-mail
includes some transcription
errors and modifications
that were not part of the
piece as originally aired,"
assured Snopes.com. Which
meant some parts-the best
parts, as it turned out-
indeed were true.
"I am a Jew, and every
single one of my ancestors
was Jewish," the e-mail
said Ben said. "And it does
not bother me even a little
bit when people call those
beautiful lit up, bejeweled
trees Christmas trees. I
don't feel threatened. I
don't feel discriminated
against. That's what they
are: Christmas trees.
"It doesn't bother me a
bit when people say, 'Merry
Christmas' to me. I don't
think they are slighting me
or getting ready to put me
in a ghetto. In fact, I kind
of like it. It shows that we
are all brothers and sisters
celebrating this happy time
of year."
The actual commentary,
which Stein delivered on
CBS Sunday Morning onDec.
18, 2005, was essentially
quoted accurately. He also
said:
"I don't like getting
pushed around for being
a Jew and I don't think
Christians like getting
pushed around for being
Christians. I think people
who believe in God are sick

added.
Yet that letter had a
profound impact on him.
Upon his return home in
the fall of 1945, Merchant
was met at the train station
by his parents near his
hometown of Chelan, Wash.,
As soon as he stepped off
the train, his stepmother
hugged and kissed him.
On the way home to the
family farm, Merchant's
stepmother told him about
his half-brother, Howard,
who had been killed on
Okinawa.
Even though they had
fought like cats and dogs as
children and young adults,
Merchant was profoundly
saddened by his half-
brother's death.
"I asked her why she
hadn't written me about
Howard, and she said 'I
knew you had enough to
worry about and decided
to wait until you came
home.'"
Something else happened
to Merchant during his
captivity.
When he had the chance
to exact revenge on his
captors, he found himself
unable to do so.
"I was given the
opportunity to kill one of
our guards, but I couldn't,"
he said. "I just couldn't do
it, and that's sort of what
happened that day at the
train station. I couldn't keep
the anger and resentment
bottled up any longer."
"I grew to love and
respect her from that
moment on until the day
she died."
Merchant sat at the family
dinner table on Christmas
Day, 1945.
He looked first at his
assembled brothers and
sisters, and then at his
stepmother.
By then, those protracted
hatreds had long since
evaporated. With a single
smile, he nodded and said,
"It's good to be home,
mom."

"I have no idea where
the concept came from that
America is an explicitly
atheist country. I can't find
it in the Constitution and I
don't like it being shoved

Now isn't that perfect?
But someone on the 'Net
wasn't satisfied, so they
tacked on to Stein's excellent
commentary an irrelevant
2001 homophobic rant from
Anne Graham Lotz, Billy
Graham's daughter.
She actually was talking
about the events of Sept. 11,
but later someone, who also
was not satisfied, reworked
it even more and made it
refer to Hurricane Katrina.
So when the Ben Stein
e-mail pops into your
e-mail box, if you should
feel compelled to share
it with your friends, do
them-and the intent of
Mr. Stein's plea-a favor
and delete the extra blather
that detracts from his nice,
concise commentary, which
concludes:
"Where did the idea
come from that we should
worship Nick and Jessica
and aren't allowed to
worship God as we
understand him? I guess
that's a sign that I'm getting
old, too. But there are a lot
of us who are wondering
where Nick and Jessica
came from and where the
America we used to know
went to."
What lovely sentiments.

FROM THE *
PULPIT The coming Savior
Michael Green Jr. c
But thou, Bethlehemn
Ephratah, though thou be little
among the thousands of Judah,
yet out of thee shall he come
forth unto me that is to be rul-
er in Israel; whose goings forth
have been from of old, from
everlasting. Micah 5:2
During this time of
year, many Christians try
to reflect upon the birth of
our Savior, Jesus Christ.
However, in the materialism
and revelry that accompa-
nies the holiday season,
thoughts of Christ are often
lost in the shuffle. Although
we do not know the exact
time of year Christ was born
into this world, we have
an excellent opportunity to
meditate upon the purpose
for which Christ was born,
and to share these truths
with others.
In the above verse we
witness the power and sov-
ereignty of God in sending
forth Christ to become our
Savior. By the inspiration
of God, Micah says, "Out
of thee (Bethlehem) shall
he come forth unto me that
is to be ruler in Israel." It
should be comforting to us
to know that Jesus was sent
of God. He was sent to be
the Savior of His people.
There was perfect harmo-
ny in Heaven in the work of
redemption. Jesus spoke of
this truth in John 3:16. "For
God so loved the world
that he gave his only begot-
ten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not
perish, but have everlasting
life."
In observing the humble
birthplace of our Savior, we
are blessed with a glimpse
of God's mercy and grace.
He was born in Bethlehem,
one of the most insig-
nificant cities in Judah. Our
Redeemer did not enter into
this world with pomp and
circumstance; instead He
was born in a manger in a
small town!
The Bible says that there
was nothing physically im-
pressive about Christ that
men would be attracted to
him. Bethlehem the name
itself is quite humble, mean-
ing 'house of bread.' What
hope that gives to the least
of us! Christ came for all of
His children, not just the
rich, the mighty, the power-
ful or the beautiful!
Prophecy was fulfilled
when the Bread of Life was
born of the Virgin Mary
in the house of Bread.
Bethlehem was also the
birthplace of David, the
second King of Israel, and
one who also had meager
beginnings. Jesus was often
referred to as the Son of
David. David was a type
of Jesus, but unlike David,
Christ's kingdom was to be
an everlasting one. Ephratah
means "Fruitfulness" or
"abundance." All Christians
would readily affirm that
these characteristics aptly
describe our Redeemer. We
have abundant, everlasting
life through Jesus Christ!
Finally, we observe why
Christ came. Micah proph-
esied that Jesus was to be
ruler of Israel. Was the
Bible speaking about Jesus
ruling as a natural king,
or something greater? His
rule far surpassed earthly
kingdoms. He is the King of
Kings and Lord of Lords.
Jesus Christ is the head

of spiritual Israel, His elect
family. In John 18:36, Jesus
explained that His kingdom
was not of this world. His
kingdom is an everlast-
ing, spiritual one. He came
into the world to save His
people (spiritual Israel)
from their sins (Matthew
1:21). He accomplished this
work when He laid down
His life on the cross. When
He said, "It is finished,"
the work of salvation was
complete! Speaking of God,
the Apostle Paul wrote,
"For he hath made him to
be sin for us, who knew no
sin; that we might be made
the righteousness of God in
him." Christ suffered in our
stead that we might have
fellowship with Him in His
kingdom.
Christ was born into
this world to redeem His
elect family. When we think
of Jesus' birth, it ought to
point us to His work on the
cross. Child of God, Heaven
is your home because of
the full, complete, finished
work of our Redeemer.
We know that we have all
sinned and come short of
the glory of God (Romans
3:23), and yet, though we
be so undeserving, we have
been given such astounding
graces! In the midst of all of
the hustle and bustle of the
holiday season, let us think
upon the greatest gift that
has ever been given the
free gift of eternal life. It is
my prayer that we would
share these truths with one
another.

Ann Spann I Crestview News Bulletin
Josh Rose and the Baker defense tries to stop a determined Bulldog team from getting
to the net on Tuesday night at Crestview.
BULLDOGS BREAK THE CHAIN
Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin
It was only a matter of
time.
Crestview's boys
basketball team took full
advantage of Baker foul
trouble Tuesday evening
at CHS.:
And when the
Bulldogs' Jordan Glover
sank another shot from
the baseline in the last
two minutes, the Bulldogs
knew they had it made.
Final score: Crestview
77, Baker 64.
"They definitely jumped
on us in that last quarter,"
said Baker coach Mike
Martello, who watched
starters Stephen Shelley
and Chad Lawhon foul
out in the final period.
"We. really have to
work on expanding our
defense so when Shelley
and Lawhon are ever out,
we can rely on having
some solid backup."
That backup was
definitely what the District
1-2A Gators needed as the
District 1-5A Bulldogs
consistently hit layups
and forced turnovers
throughout the second
half.
Can Crestview (2-9) use
the win as a springboard
to bounce back from a
tough start to the season?
"Well, they're a 1-5A
school, the teams they
play are all on a different
level as us," Martello
said.
"Sure, they can lose to
those teams but it doesn't
stop them on how they
play against 1-2A schools
like us. We really wanted
to win this one, because
both teams brought talent
to the court."
Crestview participates-
in the Playground Shootout
at Choctawhatchee High
School on Dec. 26-28.
The Bulldogs' Cory
Wenrich and Matt Sanders
talked on the sidelines
about how the tournament
is a chance for the team
to redeem itself for the
season.
. Baker (4-2) will look
to -give its season the
boost it needs when it
participates in the Walton
Sun Basketball Blowout at
Freeport on Dec. 26-29,

What can the Lady Hoboes do to learn from this year?
5p5ress
BOX
by Robert Young
The Laurel Hill girls are
looking to salvage their
season going into the New
Year. So, what can they do
to prepare?
Forstarters, theRed Level
Christmas Tournament will
give the Lady Hoboes a
chance to get back a little
momentum they have yet
to find throughout their
schedule.
Laquetta Williams and
Nyeice Underwood have
been a driving factor for
the blue and white, scoring
some heavy points in the
majority of their games, but
the team as a whole is having
trouble communicating
while playing man-to-man
defense. !
When I originally met
coach Scott Varnum in the
Hoboes gymnasium, one of
the first things he told me
was he pushed the players
to call out plays.
He said communicating
was the most important
thing. If you don't talk to
each other, then you give
up turnovers, hold the ball
way too long and you let
the other team know you're
confused. .
Communication pretty
much has dictated what has
happened ini Laurel Hill's
most recent games, even
the win over Rocky Bayou.
It's something the Hoboes
need to polish. As simple
it is to communicate, the
ramifications of not doing
so can lose a game.
Another thing about
basketball: You definitely
have to get on top during
the early games to get
some momentum to carry
you through the rest of the
season.
Since the basketball
season goes a lot quicker
than sports like football
and baseball, it's hard to get
footing.
Laurel Hill's schedule
is pretty tough, mostly
because programs like
Central, Baker, Paxton and
South Walton are at a talent
peak.
That's benn a hard thing
for the Lady Hoboes to
break through.
Since LHS is having a
troubling year, it would be
best to work on the basics
for the remainder of the
season.
Laurel Hill definitely has
its shooters and speedsters
that always keep the drive
going, but they have a hard
time passing the ball around
consistently without giving
up numerous turnovers.
That's something any
team goes through when it
is not in its comfort zone.
The upcoming Red
Level tournament is an
opportunity to play over
and over and learn some
ways to fix some problems
like communication.
With only twho district
games left (East Hill
Christian and Paxton), the
team can only finish out the
season with high hopes and
a tight plan for next year.
Look for your Hoboes'
tourney results in next
week's issue!
Briefs from
the bleachers
Gainer 54, Laurel Hill 53
