CRESTV1EW The Pearl Tyner
Auditorium at Crestview High School
was filled Monday morning by a typical
effervescent group of 11' -graders.
Kids bubbled with excitement over
the impending winter break, laughing.
calling out to each other and joking
around.
Then Pete Wolfniewicz put a damper
on the merriment.
The usual undercurrent of whispers
and shuffling came to an abrupt end
as Wolfniewicz, a community action
site leader for Mothers Against Drunk
Driving, described in step-by-step detail
hot\ drunken 17-year-old motorists
killed his daughter, Christina.
He told how first one drunk driver
slammed into Christina's car, pinning her
behind the dashboard. He told of the last
anguished moments of her life, trapped
helplessly as an intoxicated 17-year-old
T-boned her side of the vehicle.
He told of the sudden call at his office
from his, family's priest. He described his
and his family's anguish over their loss.
And he described how the 17-year-
old received only 11 days in jail for his
crime, and how his family was forced
to sue both drivers to achieve any sort
of justice. (Attorneys took most of the
settlement money.)
"I'm telling you this story not to get
pity from you," Wolfniewicz said. "I tell;
it because I care about you."
The program was organized by
Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office Corp.
Greg W. Porch, one of the CHS resource
officers.
The medical condition of Jeremy
Williams, who was stabbed in the head
early Friday, has improved according to
Mike Burke, spokesman for Sacred Heart
Hospital in Pensacola.
"He's been upgraded to good condition,"
Burke said.
Williams was listed in critical condition
last weekend.
Williams was taken to Sacred Heart after
stumbling from a home on Fifth Street in
Laurel Hill to a local convenience store.
He was "gushing" blood from a stab
wound to the head when rescuers reached
him, an arrest report said.
Jonathan James Henson, 28, has been
charged with attempted murder in the case.
A trail of blood led investigators from the
place Williams was found to the scene of the
altercation at which the victim suffered his
injury.

The intoxicated young driver of this pick-up was severely injured in the wreck he
caused. Sadly, he was not the latest teen to die in a vehicle crash.
"I love my job," Porch sa id, "but I very
much dislike having to attend student
funerals.",
In introducing Wolfniewicz, Porch
said, "The reason I do this program
is because I want you to be back in
Januaryy"
Porch said he is well aware there will
be the temptation of holiday parties
where alcohol will be served.
"You and I both know you're going to
do these things," he said.
Following Wolfniewicz's remarks,
a Florida Highway Patrol video was
screened featuring graphic scenes of DUI
car wrecks and poignant commentary
by young motorists convicted of drunk
driving.
The program's message was simple:
DUI is a crime of choice, and innocent
victims almost always suffer more than
the drunk driver.
"The choices that you make don't just
affect you," Porch emphasized. "They
.affect everyone around you."
To emphasize the point, two vehicles
involved in drunk-driving accidents are
on display at the high school campus
through the week. One, -a mangled

As we come to the end of
2007, I want to take a moment to
thank all of the News Bulletin's
readers and advertisers for their
wonderful support throughout
the past 12 months. We've
seen a lot of changes here at
the Bulletin, but one thing has
remained constant: our desire to
cover your corner of the world
and to provide our customers
with the best possible service.
That commitment will continue
into 2008 and beyond.
I'd like to take a moment to
recognize the folks at the Bulletin
who have helped us make 2007
a successful year.
You see their names and their
photos on this page, but I want
you to know what an important
role they all play in putting
together the Bulletin twice a
week.
Our new editor, Kyle Wright,
has hit the ground running this
week. He is eager to get your
news in the paper, so feel free
to call him here at the Bulletin
or e-mail him at kylew@

Robert Young, our sports

our community news clerk,
round out our editorial team.
They all take pride in getting the

Graphic artist Amanda Kosche
designs most of the ads in our

About
\ Congress
Lou Frey
Mike Huckabee will get
a bounce out of Iowa, but
not enough to capture New
Hampshire. His lack of money
and the close examination of
past statements will hurt and his
candidacy will fade by Feb. 5.
Huckabee was at nine percent,
but is moving up in New
Hampshire primarily because
there are far fewer "religious
right" in New Hampshire than
Iowa.
However, he has already made
a strong showing (currently
second nationally) and will be
a very serious contender for the
vice-presidential nomination.
Rudy Giuliani is betting that he
can survive without winning
Iowa or New Hampshire, as
George McGovern and Bill
Clinton did.
Presently he is third in New
Hampshire. The mayor has the
financial resources to survive
losing in both states and yet
compete in the remaining
important primaries up to and
including Feb. 5th.
The wild card in New
Hampshire is Ron Paul. His
recent fundraising is amazing.
He claims he will have raised
$12 million this quarter. He is
now able to compete with the
leaders on all media outlets.
The question yet to be answered
is what percentage of the vote
will he get and who will be
hurt. He is now fifth with eight
percent of the vote. My guess,
and let me emphasize it is truly
a guess, is that John McCain and
Giuliani have fewer potential
voters who will change to Paul,
than Mitt Romney and Fred
Thompson, who are more at
risk. Thompson is sixth in New
Hampshire with four percent
of the vote and if this does not
change, will have to drop out of
the race. The candidates know
the importance of these two
elections even though they must
be frustrated over the amount of
time and money they spend for
so few electoral votes. They are
getting testy and you can always
tell who is doing well by who is
getting attacked.
On the Democrat side, John
Edwards has been campaigning
in Iowa since the last presidential
election. He has to win Iowa
to stay in the race. He is now
running third and it doesn't look
like he will catch either Barack
Obama or Hillary Clinton.
He could stagger into New
Hampshire after a third place
finish, but stagger would be
the appropriate word. Obama
is presently ahead in Iowa with
Clinton close behind. If Clinton
is able to stay relatively close
to Obama in Iowa and New
Hampshire, she will close out the
nomination process on Feb. 5.
She has a 2-to-1 lead over Obama
nationally. She has an outstanding
organization with tons of money.
Do not underestimate the impact
of former President Bill Clinton.
Obama is doing very well
with young people. However,
colleges don't begin in Iowa until
several days after the election on
Jan. 3. That, coupled with a major
football bowl game on election
evening, could draw interest
from the primary to the ball field
for the college-age voters. It may
not impact many young people,
but the vote in Iowa is so thin
that a minor correction can have
a major impact.
In conclusion, the Iowa and

New Hampshire elections will
have an impact on the selection
of nominees, but will not be as
important as they were in the
past. There is a good chance that
neither Giuliani nor Clinton will
win in Iowa and Giuliani will
not win in New Hampshire.
However, with the organizations
and money both possess, and
the short turn-around between
the first two elections and Super
Tuesday, it would appear that
new "rules" will be written
regarding primary election
campaigns. Hopefully the
parties will get together after
the election and come up with
a better system. I could support
a revolving regional primary. I
could support a system whereby
only half of the delegates are
elected in primaries and the rest
atkthe convention. I could support
a system that would do away
with Iowa and New Hampshire
being the first two states in the
primary election process. I could
support almost any change as
this one stinks (a legal term)!

Okaloosa officials
tour Clayton County
water reservoirs
Okaloosa County Commissioner
Sherry Campbell requested that
Water and Sewer Director Jeff
Littrell find reservoirs that had
a proven success, in answer to
an outcry from the community
for alternatives to damming the
Yellow River.
"I wanted to hear other
solutions to make us all feel
more confident with decisions
on vital water resources," said
Campbell. She, along with
Commissioners Bill Roberts and
John Jannazo, Fort Walton Beach
City Councilman Bill Garvie and
Crestview Councilwoman Linda
Parker attended the day trip to
Clayton County, Ga. Engineers
from CH2M Hill, Okaloosa County
Administrator Jim Curry and Jeff
Littrell also attended.
The group toured four
reservoirs, two of which were
offline reservoirs. They also toured
a water treatment plant. According
to Mr. Littrell, the smallest was 78
acres and the largest was 387 acres.
In addition to the reservoirs, they
were able to see the recreation
areas around the reservoirs.
"We were able to see how it
looks and how it works," stated
Littrell.
Roberts, board liaison for the
Water and Sewer Department, had
this to say: "We saw a quality water
utility system in action, one that
was started 50 years ago and they
did it right. If the board decides on
an offline reservoir, we can learn
from what they have done here."
Jannazo added, "What is also
important about the reservoirs
we toured is that they are all
environmentally friendly. They
recycle, reuse effluent and provide
new wetlands through this process.
The leadership in the 1980s
looked ahead, planned ahead
and executed the plan, creating
an aggressive water conservation
program."
Offline water retention is one
option for future water supply to
be considered, which traps and
holds water for use as needed.
Another idea to be reviewed in the
near future is riverbank filtration.
According to Littrell, we will
continue to use our existing wells.
However, no new wells will be
drilled after about 2017. For more
information, call 850-651-7105.

as voice messages with a return

investigating.

As culled from
Crestview Police
Department arrest re-
ports:
Why is He Still
on the Road?
Usually I reserve this
column for the antics of
silly criminals presented
in a humorous way. But
this one really peeved me,
and it should peeve you,
too. I regret I just can't
find the humor in it.
On the morning of Nov.
30, a 28-year-old Crestview
man plowed his blue Ford
SUV into the rear of a
Laurel Hill resident's ve-
hicle that was stopped for
a red light at S.R. 85 and
Redstone Avenue.
The Laurel Hill driver
was a fQrmer Marine, re-
cently returned from serv-
ing in Iraq. Fortunately, he
was not injured.
The driver of the SUV*
had his license suspected
on Sept. 19 for 'receiving
24 traffic violation points
within 36 months. In ad-
dition, his license was re-
voked for 60 months on
Oct. 9 for being a habitual
traffic offender.
On Nov. 8 the SUV driv-
er's license was suspend-
ed indefinitely for failure
to' pay traffic fines. And
on Nov. 15, it was again
suspended "for financial
responsibility, non-judg-
ment suspension."
Rather than just sus-
pending and revoking a
license, this habitual of-
fender and others of his ilk
should have their vehicles
removed, as well as their
licenses, to keep them off
our streets.
Here are some others:
Dec. 10: 38-year-old
Crestview guy, arrested
for "felony DUI, fourth or
subsequent charge, op-
erating his car 'with his
license permanently re-
voked since July 5.
Dec. 8: 32-year-old
Crestview man, speeding
and running a stop sign in
his SUV while his license
was suspended ten times
for various reasons.
Dec. 8: 35-year-old
Crestview man, known
to the arresting officer
for having a suspended
license. "I ain't gonna lie
to you, I ain't got one,"
he told the officer when
asked for his license and
registration.
Another Driver to

one, but my mom has
hers." Later she assured
the policeman, "I don't

ing to go get it today."
Maybe we can save
future bother for all in-
volved and just not issue
her a license at all.
He's Baaaaack...
Early in the evening of
Dec. 11i, Crestview Police
ordered a 47-year-old Fort
Walton man to stay out of
a local convenience store
.where he was causing
a disturbance. The man
complied-by walking
across the street and sit-
ting in the grass.
But apparently the or-
der did not register, be-
cause around 11:30 p.m.,
he was back, but now
drunk. The responding
officer found him sit-
ting on a wall at the store
property "exactly where
he was when I first dealt
with him."
He was arrested for
trespassing after warning.
Disturbing &%@* I
Behavior
On Dec. 14, a 47-year-
old' man "began cursing
and screaming" at a re-
sponding officer, calling
him "a homeless British
Nazi [nasty term imply-
ing an incestuous mater-
nal relationship]."
Advised to calm down
or be arrested, the man
employed colorful meta-
phors and again called the
officer a Nazi.
The man was then ar-
rested, amid a torrent of
loudly voiced obscenities.
Because the incident
occurred within 50 feet
of a hamburger empo-
rium on West James Lee
Boulevard, the officer
stated, "I do believe the
defendant's actions did
affect the peace and quiet
of persons who witnessed
them."
Disreputable
Newsman
Taking advantage of
the clerk being outside
of her convenience store,
a man delivering news-
papers helped himself to
two packs of cigarettes,
two lighters (presumably
one for each pack), and a
candy bar and then left.
The entire theft was
caught on vide6, and the
suspect, being a regular,
was immediately identi-
fied by store personnel.
Confronted, the man
said he didn't steal any-
thing but did admit tak-
ing the candy bar, saying
he would pay for it later.
Told that police had video
of him stealing things, the
man insisted it was im-
possible.
"I put a CD labeled
'Theft-Newsguy' on the
table," the officer's re-
port stated, and the man
"admitted to stealing"
the items. But he said he
threw .the cigarettes out
of the window of his ve-
hicle.
He was arrested for re-
tail theft. Oddly, his em-
ployer carried no report
of the incident.

Use caution,
consumer savvy
when purchasing
gift card,
Attorney General Bill
McCollum encourages
Floridians to be savvy
shoppers when purchasing
and using gift cards this
holiday season. Basic
consumer, awareness and
fraud prevention techniques
could spare holiday
shoppers considerable
trouble. Attorney General
McCollum also outlined
tips for using gift cards
that would enable gift
card recipients to protect
themselves from fraud.
"With the holiday season
in full swing, the potential
for fraud is very real and
our citizens should. take
care to protect themselves,"
said Attorney. General
McCollum:
An important
recommendation this
holiday season is to pay
close attention to the fine
print on gift cards. A new
law passed this year by
the Florida Legislature
mandates that gift cards
issued in Florida will not
expire or have any fees that
would reduce the value
of the gift card. Gift cards
issued before June 28, 2007
can still have expiration
dates, fees and other terms
that could reduce their
value.
The Florida Retail
Federation estimates that
Florida consumers will
spend one out of every
five dollars on gift cards
this Christmas season.
Nationwide, consumers
are projected to spend
approximately $25 billion
on gift cards during the
2007 holiday season.
"Gift cards, will be a
popular gift item this
Christmas. We urge
consumers to use them
wisely and treat them the
same as cash," said Rick
McAllister, President of the
Florida Retail Federation.
The Attorney General's
Office also released the
following tips for buying
and using gift cards:
Buy gift cards from
reputable sources. Avoid
buying gift cards from
online auction sites as
these cards may be stolen
or counterfeit or may have
been obtained fraudulently.
Always read the fine
print before purchasing gift
cards.
Inspect the card before
buying. Verify that none
of the protective stickers
have been removed. Ensure
that the codes on the back
of the card have not been
scratched off to reveal a
PIN number. Report altered
cards to the store selling the
cards.
Give the recipient the
original receipt to verify
the card's purchase value
in case the card is lost or
stolen.
Ask about purchase
exceptions, including any
terms of use that may vary
regarding a store's Web site
versus the physical store
location.
Treat gift cards like
cash. If a card is lost or
stolen, report it to the issuer
immediately. Most issuers
have toll-free numbers to
report lost or stolen cards.
Complaints about gift
cardsshouldfirstbereported
to the retailer or financial
institution that issued the
card. If the problem can't
be resolved at that level,
consumers may want to
file a complaint with the
appropriate authorities.
. For cards issued by
retailers, consumers may
contact the Federal Trade
Commissionatwww.ftc.gov
.or call the toll free number,
1-877-FTC-HELP. For cards
issued by national banks,
consumers may contact the
Comptroller of the Currency
(OCC) Customer Assistance
Group at 1-800-613-6743 or
send an e-mail to customer.
assistance@occ.treas.gov.
The OCC charters, regulates,
and supervises national
banks, some of which issue
gift cards. Complaints
may also be reported- to
the attorney general's
office fraud hotline at
1-866-966-7226 or online at
www.myfloridalegal.com.

The site allows visitors

several ways: through a.

(from benefits and grants
to voters and elections), by

It currently lists popular

I'd like to offer another -
read more books!
A poll by The Associated

the typical American read
only four books last year,

STAFF PICKS
"The Footprints of
God" by Greg Iles LP Fic
Ile Iles is at his best in this
thriller with a "provocative
start, breakneck middle,
and explosive end" about a
team of scientists working
on a supercomputer that
comes to life and threatens
to destroy the world.
"A Cafe on theNile"
by Bartle Bull Fic
Bul I admit it; I love
"Casablanca." The
Cataract Cafe is the Nile's
answer to Rick's. It's the
brink of World War II, and
everybody comes here,
bringing romance, intrigue,
and adventure.
"The Power of Play:
How Spontaneous,
Imaginative Activities
Lead to Happier, ,
Healthier Children" by
David Elkind 155.4 Elk
Elkind's earlier book, the
best-selling classic "The
Hurried Child," was one
of the books that greatly
influenced my parenting
philosophy. Now he
returns to combat the
marketing campaigns that
have convinced so many
parents that children will
be at a disadvantage if they
are not engaged in constant
scheduled activities or
occupied with the latest
"educational" games.
When did it become a sign
of responsible parenting
to schedule every moment
of our children's lives?
Whatever happened to
plain old play?
"A Century of
American Icons: 100

from the 20th Century
Consumer Culture".
by Mary Cross 658.1
Cro Do you remember
the "Burma Shave"
billboards? Did you know
that "Betty Crocker" has
been given an "updated"
look seven times since she
was created? In the 20th
century, Americans were
romanced by consumer
culture. This book
compiles entries on 100
consumer products 10
per decade that figured
prominently in the rise of
consumer culture in the
United States, telling the
story behind the century's
most popular products,
slogans, and symbols.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"The whole concept
of libraries originated
with private collections
being made public. It
was recognized early on
that access to literature on
every discipline would
help create the kind of
society we yearn for ...
I won't feign ignorance
about governments having
to make hard decisions
in dispersing public
funds; but neither should
taxpayers feign surprise
when, after all the topsoil
has been hauled away,
a tree refuses to grow."

CRESTVIEW Adults
sometimes wonder whether
young people with whom
they interact look up to
them.
Tuesday morning at
Davidson Middle School,
some very special elders
received their assurances in
writing followed by more
than a few hugs.
Seventh graders in
Melinda Parker and Marilyn
Jones' English classes wrote
essays earlier this month
about an elder whom
each student particularly
* respected.
Tuesday morning the
objects of their laudatory
works got to see firsthand
how much they mean to
the young authors. Each
received their student's
essay upon arriving at
Davidson.
"You are very, very special
guests," Jones told the
students' visitors assembled
with them at Davidson's
cafeteria.
"The kids wrote
expository essays," Jones
said, "and after reading
them, I can certainly
understand why they are
blessed to have you in their
lives, and we are blessed to
have them in our lives."
At one table Air Force
Maj. Michele Nagel spent
time with her daughter
Stephanie, who praised her
mother in her essay.
"I respect my mom
because she taught me how
to be a good sport and be
nice to others who may not
be so nice to me," Stephanie
said.
Mother and daughter
often bond while playing
the online role-playing
game, World of Waroraft.
"We get to play together,"'
said Maj.'Nagle. "Its fun.
Every parent should have
something they share with
their kids."
Three tables over, Judy
Rogers was visiting with her
grandson, Austin Rogers,
who chose her as his subject
because "I respect her a
lot."
His essay was neatly
packaged in a binder
with photos of his family
artistically arranged on
subsequent pages. It was
his Christmas present to his
"Meme."
"No one has ever given
me a Christmas present like
that ever in my life," said
Judy Rogers. "He's not only
my grandson, but one of my
best friends."
Wrote Austin: "There
are many important people
in the world, but there is
no one I respect or, who is.
important to me than my
grandmother.
"If you hit a bump in the
road with life, she will tell
you some Bible verses and

Judy Rogers was
obviously moved.
"The kid is better than the
person he's writing about,"
she said.
Bil Gebhardt drove over
from New Orleans, where
he is a church pastor, to
receive accolades from his
granddaughter Madeline.
"He's the person I
respect the most," explained
Madeline. "He was the first
person who came into my
mind."
Her essay included this
passage:
"If I'm ever going through
a tough time, he knows
just what to say to get me
through it, and he always
sets a good example.
"Everybody goes through
tough times, and everybody

D o n' t over spend. It is very easy at Christmas
time to spend too much and put yourself in a financial
hole for a good part of the new year. Decide before you
go shopping how much you can afford to spend and
stick to your budget. Shopping early will help you slick
to a budget as you will not be in a last minute panic,
picking up anything that may be suitable regardless
of the cost.
If money is a little light for you or some of your
family members there are a couple of ways you can
reduce your spending costs. Together you could decide
that all gills should be handmade or second hand. Or
you could all decide that each of you will only buy for
one other person. This way instead of spending $5 on
10 people and getting them all little cute but junky
things you spend $50 on one person and get them
something that they will really appreciate. Decide
between the family an amount that everyone is to
spend and then draw names out of a hat to
see who you will shop for.
Wrap the presents as soon as
you can after buying them that
will leave one less thing to do on

also about some basic art
principles (proportion

LAUREL HILL Laurel
Hill's boys basketball
team walked into its
gymnasium Friday night
with visions of victory
against a young Paxton
squad.
The three-time
defending District 1-A
champion Hoboes were
in their own house for
another rivalry game.
But experience wasn't
a factor over talent as
Paxton's freshman Shaq
Jackson scored 18 points
to lead his team to a 66-46
win.
"We didn't do too well
out there tonight," Hoboes
coach Ronnie Smith said.
"It's going to be awhile
until the end of the
season."
In the first quarter it
was all Jackson. He started
things off with a 3-point
shot two minutes into the
game.
Jackson totaled half of
his 18 points in the first
half and, along with Zack
Vickers, set a standard for
the rest of evening. Paxton
(7-0, 3-0) never trailed.
Once Laurel Hill's
Jeffrey Reese got scent of
what was going on, he
started to put points up
on the board.
Unfortunately, Reese
had trouble getting a hold
of the ball and making
shots, giving him just one
field goal 4nd five point's
in the first half.
It was -a'lT"-about a
defense that shut down an
always-motivated Reese.
Chaze Russell of Paxton
helped keep Reese down
for the night, which was a
big factor on cutting down
on Laurel Hill's expected
point streaks.

found the spark he was
looking for nine points

Play on the

Heckling from

rougher.

Wrestling: Giving it their best shot this weekend
Jeff Fowler
Crestview News Bulletin
The Crestview wrestlers
played gracious hosts to
16 teams from Pensacola
to Tallahassee on Saturday
in the fifth annual "Dawg-
POUND Classic" dual
wrestling tourney.
The Bulldogs had high
hopes of placing in the top
four, but faltered down the
stretch and finished eighth.
The Dawgs had just
completed eight of the
most grueling days in the
team's history. All of the
varsity wrestlers competed
in at least eleven matches in
that span. Some wrestlers
competed in 16 or 17
matches.
"Scheduling forced our
hands and we just hunkered
down and wrestled hard.
The kids have seen a lot of
wrestling in the last week
and though they kinda
Wore down at the end, the
experience will prepare
them for the postseason,"
explained coach Jeff
Fowler.
Though the wrestlers
wore down on the mat,
parents, families and the
wrestlers themselves ran an
excellent event that went
off without a hitch.
"Sixteen teams from
all over competing head
to head and getting five
matches each in one day,
that's fun man! Our parents
and families displayed
great hospitality and ran a
fine tourney. I think all the
teams were impressed,"
exclaimed Fowler.
The Bulldogs started
off facing district favorite
Mosley. Crestview gave the
Dolphins a very good run
but fell 51-30.
"A couple matches here
or there and we beat them.
Great team effort," said
Fowler.
. The Dawgs then beat
Wewahitchka 59-15 and
South Walton 42-27 to set
up a third and "hopefully"
last dual showdown with
Rutherford.
The Dawgs fell to the
Rams, this time 50-30. The
score doesn't reflect it,
but this was a very close
match. The Bulldogs lost
two individual matches
they were winning

Bulldogs' dual meets.
commandingly.
"We win those two and
we wrestle for fifth place
instead of seventh," said
Fowler.
In their final match
against Choctawhatchee
the grueling week came to
ahead as the tired Bulldogs
just couldn't put it together,
losing a tough one 45-24.
,"They were just plain
whooped! The rest Sunday
will be greatly appreciated,
believe me," Fowler said.
Though the team didn't
fare quite as well as it hoped,
individual Dawgs shone
brightly. The Bulldogs
were lead by senior captain
171-pounder Nick Panucci.
He capped off a perfect day
finishing 5-0 with five very
impressive pins.
"Nick is having a
breakthrough. season for
us," Fowler said. "He
seems to be feeling very
comfortable on the mat
and is huge reason for our
success thus far."
Junior captain and
112-pounder Danny
Johnson went 3-0 with
three pins and avenged an
upset loss during the week
by pinning a Wewahitchka
opponent.
Senior captain and
135-pounder Kyle Miller
also had a great day,
finishing 4-1 with his only
loss a 14-12 battle against a
state-ranked wrestler from
Choctawhatchee.
"I really think we're
impressing people," Fowler
said. "As a program we run
excellent tourneys (and)
have a great fan base.
"We are very young,
we're winning matches,
and even in our losses we're
giving very good teams a
run. Our JV wrestlers are
pushing 'our varsity and
kids all over the school and
area want to be involved
with us. It is a great feeling
to finally see some fruits
of our labors over the past
seven years."
The Bulldogs aren't done
this calendar year quite yet.
They'll get a little reprieve
during the next week with
just three practice days
but then get right back to
it Friday and Saturday at
Fort Walton Beach in a very
tough "Beast at the Beach"
dual tourney.
"We're gonna go in there
and give it our best shot. If
we' can put together some
mistake free, 'non-youth'
wrestling we will surprise
some teams. If our youth
shows then we'll take some
lumps," Fowler said. "The
beautiful thing is even if
we take our lumps we learn
well and come late January
and February we will better
than many teams and
wrestlers."
An SEC Christmas list
BRIEFS continued from C1
Scott McKinney
Crestview News Bulletin
Merry Christmas and
/Happy Holidays! During
this special time of the year,
I always like to make out
the Christmas wish list for
SEC coaches and players,
hoping that St. Nick will
find it in his heart to fulfill
their dreams.
For South Carolina
coach Steve Spurrier my
Christmas wish is for less
football and more golf. The
ol' ball coach recently said
that he had really 'neglected
his golf game the last few
months and that he needed
to get back on the links.
Hey coach, the reason you
have been busy the last few
months is a little something
called football season,.
something you get paid
millions of. dollars to be a
part of.
For former Ole Miss
coach Ed Orgeron, my
Christmas wish is that
he at least gets to keep
his Hummer. I just can't
imagine Coach 0 driving
around in a Cutlass. It
wouldn't be right.
For new Arkansas
coach Bobby Petrino, my
Christmas wish is that he
can somehow find a way to
sell one of his five houses
he now owns. Petrino can't
seem to stick around any
one job long enough to
make a dent in a mortgage.
I also wish for him thick
skin, because he will be the
recipient of much criticism
over the course of the next
year.
For Florida quarterback
Tim Tebow, my Christmas
wish is for a very large
trophy cabinet. This year's
Heisman Trophy winner is
going to need it if he stays
in Gainesville for two more
years. He could go down
as the greatest player in the
history of college football.
For Tennessee coach
Phillip Fulmer, my
Christmas wish is for
lots of candy canes and
holiday cookies! No, just
kidding! Fulmer deserves
a year without the fans and
naysayers breathing down
his 'neck. The Vols have
been the most consistent
team in the SEC over the
last decade, and Fulmer
is one of the nation's top
coaches.
For LSU coach Les, Miles,
my Christmas wish is for
better decision making.
Sure, the Tiger coach pulled
off some miraculous plays
this past season, taking the
name "Riverboat Gambler"
from Tommy Tuberville.
But, when it came down to
whether or not he would
leave LSU for Michigan,
Miles did not handle that
part of his job very well.
For Kentucky coach
Rich Brooks, the 2007 year
had to be one of the best
years he has ever had.
After surviving 2006, a
year .when most thought
Brooks was headed out the
door in Lexington, Brooks
managed to post another
winning season this fall and
earn the Wildcats', second-
straight Music CityBowl
invitation. However,
Brobks' Christmas wish will
be for a solid replacement
for quarterback Andre
Woodson, who has
completed his eligibility
at Kentucky and is now
headed to the NFL. If
Brooks wants to continue
his revival in the Bluegrass,
finding a quarterback is
paramount.
For new Ole Miss head
coach Houston Nutt, my
Christmas wish is that he
finds the Rebel fans more
unified than what he had
at Arkansas, his former
employer. Nutt 'resigned
at Arkansas stating a need
for the Razorback fan base
to once again be united.
Honestly, Nutt came
under heavy criticism in
Fayetteville for every move
he made, on and off the
field. The Ole Miss fans
can be ruthless, but there is
something about Nutt that
makes one believe he can
convince them to rally as
one unit.
For Mississippi State
coach Sylvester Croom,
my Christmas wish is for
a quiet, peaceful holiday
season. He has certainly
earned it. No one expected
Croom to survive this
past season in Starkville,
but somehow he led the
Bulldogs to a winning
season and a berth in the
Liberty Bowl. The word
floating around is that
Croom will be interviewed
for the vacant Atlanta
Falcon job. For his sake,
I hope he realizes what a
dead end that would be
and stays in Starkville for a
long, long time.
For Vanderbilt coach
Bobby Johnson, my
Chri'stmas wish is the
same one I have wished for
him ever since he arrived
in Nashville for the
Commodores to get to a
bowl game. Vanderbilt has
been oh, so close the last
few years only to come up
one game short. Hopefully
the new year will bring
wonderful news for the
personable Johnson, no one
deserves it more.
For Georgia coach Mark
Richt, my Christmas wish
is that he will start to be
recognized as one of the
top coaches in all of college
football. What he has done
in Athens makes Vince
Dooley look like Ray Goff.
But, yet no one seems to
put Richt in the top listing
of college coaches. I also
hope he shows Hawaii and
their opinionated coach,
June Jones, how football is.
played in the South when
the two meet up in the Sugar
Bowl in New Orleans.
And, for all of you, my
Christmas wish is for quiet
family time, good sports
and the best year ever in
2008! Merry Christmas!
