But how can parents foster a reading

Daniel Phillis stands at his vehicle while packing his tent after camping outside
Best Buy in Destin Friday morning.

Black

Friday not,

so black

Amanda Kosche
Crestview News Bulletin

Black Friday wasn't so
black after all.
My experience this year
with this wonderfulholiday
of glorious shopping was
one of the best.
It started with a list and
a plan-
Thursday night my
mother and I sat down to
make the "hit list," mapping
out where we'd stop.
Best Buy, Office Depot,
Michael's and Target were
all on the list
We then had to pick
where to go first.
Of course Best Buy was
number one on our list.
Friday morning at "dark
thirty" alarms went off
around the house.
So with coffee in hand,
along with inserts from
Thursday's paper and
every credit card we had,
we set off for a morning of
shopping.
When we arrived at our
first stop of the day, Best
Buy, it was a sight to see!
There were loads of
people lined up already,
along with three police cars
and three tents!
I got a chance to talk
to one of the people who

was brave enough to sleep
outside the store.
Daniel Phillis was one of
the few people who braved
the cold and windy night,
but in the end he got what
he wanted a television
and a computer.
After about an hour
outside in the cold, windy
predawn, I was able to get
inside the store.
By this time, my mother
who had gone to get in
line at Office Depot, was
checking out.
This year, my big item to
get was a new cell phone.
I'm happy to say I am
now the owner of a brand
new cell!
After Best Buy, my
mother and I met back up at
Michael's, where we filled
two carts full of Christmas
decorations and presents.
After Michael's we hit
Target.
I won't tell you how
much we spent, but I
will say that we filled up
the trunk and part of the
backseat!
After the dust settled,
I still don't have all the
people on my list taken
care of, but that is what the
weekend is for.

The following inci-
dents were garnered
from Crestview Police
Department arrest reports.

"- Two-for-one
If you're gonna do some-
thing dumb, you might as
well make it worthwhile to
be arrested for it.
A 27-year-old Crestview
man was mad at his girl-
friend. Apparently to en-
dear himself to her, he
smashed her bedroom win-
dow, broke the porch light
bulb, then fled on her son's
chopper-style bicycle.
"The victim advised the
defendant would break out
the light bulbs when she
refused to talk to him," the
report explained.
"The red chopper bike
was later recovered.. .in the
vicinity of the defendant's
grandmother's house," the
report said.
That alone earned the
guy charges of criminal
mischief and petit theft. But
to add to it, the dude also
earned himself a resisting
an officer charge when he
took off on foot when the
police went to arrest him on
an active warrant that after-

Reality check
A 26-year-old Crestview
woman stole two sequential
checks from a local Mexican
restaurant. Making it pay-
able to herself (gee, who
would ever know?), she
cashed the second one
at Wal-Mart for $432.97.
Thinking she got away with
it, four days later she cashed
the first check at Wal-Mart
for $453.97.
Naturally, the business
owner noticed the activity
on his next check statement,
contacted police, which re-
viewed Wal-Mart security
footage and saw the wom-
an cashing the checks.

An expensive waffle
So the guy eats and runs
from a local waffle estab-
lishment, but an employee
recognizes the 25-year-old
Crestview resident as a
frequent visitor to the com-
plainant's neighborhood.
The police recognize him,
too, just by his description.
The unpaid bill of $5.28
ended up costing the guy
a stint in jail, where, pre-
sumably, the fare isn't as
savory.

What's in a name
Strolling along with just

his lady friend and his drug
paraphernalia, a 56-year-
old Crestview man gave the
suspicious police officer a
false name. Pretty slick,
but other miscreants
attempting the same
ruse should learn
from his example
and at least spell
their cover name
correctly. Leaving
out a key consonant
is a dead giveaway.
The man also said
he had no identifica-
tion. Well, apart from an
ATM card with his cor-
rect name on it, anyway.
He also had accoutrement
for smoking narcotics in his
hand.
In all, his nocturnal stroll
earned him charges of pos-
session of paraphernalia,
resisting an officer, and
obstruction by a disguised
person.

The family that
smokes together...
When Street Crimes Unit
officers responded to a ver-
bal disturbance complaint,
one of the defendants, a
46-year-old Crestview man,
went to his car, followed by
one of the officers, where he
tossed a clear bag of mari-
juana onto the console.
When the officer ,in-
quired of the bag's con-
tents, "he responded 'pot,'"
the report states.
The defendant "stated
that he smokes marijuana
on a regular basis, but the
marijuana that was in the
bag was his son's."
Uh oh, Pop's gonna be on

Junior's poop-list for losing
his stash to CPD.

How cooperative
After running two
stop signs, a 38-year-old
Crestview man was sus-
pected as DUI. During a
pat-down, 4-and-a-half
Lortab pills were found
in his pocket, as well as a
marijuana pipe. Off to jail
he went.
While changing him
into his orange inmate
jumpsuit, officers found a
bag with marijuana in his
shorts pocket. "The defen-
dant said he forgot that was
in his pocket," the arrest re-
port stated.
In all he garnered charg-
es for possession of drug
paraphernalia; possession
of a controlled substance
without a prescription; pos-
session of marijuana; and
the coup de gras, introduc-
ing contraband into a coun-
ty detention facility.

"There's a lot of things
we as parents don't
know about learning to
read," said Jana Sterling,
director of Family and
Community Involvement
for the Volunteer Florida
Foundation.
"What we forget is that
parents are not educators,"
Sterling said, "and even

though we, as our child's
parent, are their. first
teacher, we don't always
have the skills it takes to
have the patience to go
forward."
In a similar program at
Northwood Elementary
School at the end of
September, Starling offered
a few tips on how to make
reading a more pleasant
experience, how to increase

reading minutes without
increasing your or your
children's stress levels, and
how to get your kids to
want to read with you.
Families Building Better
Readers "is a lot of fun,
it's based on fun," Sterling
said. "We want the kids to
have a good experience to
build their confidence so
that they know they can
do this and that they can

succeed."
The program, funded by
Just Read Florida, is based
on a "Bob the Builder
theme," in which kids -
and moms and dads -
"build" up their reading
skills.
"It's really important
that we get these skills
down hard and fast with
our young readers,"
Sterling said.

FROM THE

PULPIT We shall behold him
Michael Green Jr.

For the Lord himself shall
descend from heaven with
a shout, with the voice of
the archangel, and with the
trumpet of God: and the dead
in Christ shall rise first: Then
we which are alive and remain
shall be caught up together
with them in the clouds, to
meet the Lord in the air: and

so shall we ever be with the
Lord. Wherefore comfort one
another with these words. 1
Thessalonians 4:16-18
The truth of the
resurrection of Jesus Christ
is the heart of our Christian
faith. It gives life to all that
we hold dear as God's
people. In 1 Corinthians 15

the Apostle Paul states that
if Jesus were still buried in
a tomb, preaching and our
faith would be empty (v.
14). Our witness would be
false (v.15) and we would
yet be in our sins (v.17). We
would indeed be miserable
creatures!

verses Paul writes to a
group of young Christians
that were worrying
about their relatives and
friends who preceded
them in death. They
were worried about the
eternal destiny of those
that died without the
benefit of the preached
gospel. Paul's good news
to them was that the Lord
is coming down from
Heaven to gather all of
his people. This includes
an innumerable host that
died without the benefit
of the preached word.
Jesus is coming back to
call ALL of his elect home.
Those that are dead in
Christ will rise from the
graves and meet him in
the air! None of His sheep
shall be lost.
Jesus' return is going
to be powerful. The
Bible states that He is
coming back with a
shout. In the midst of
battle, generals shout
orders to their obedient
soldiers. They dutifully
heed the instructions of
their commander. In like
manner, when our King
of King and Lord of Lords
returns on the last day,
we will heed the shout to
get up. The dead in Christ
will obediently rise first
and then those that are
alive will follow. When
Jesus shouts, everything
obeys!
The voice of the
archangel marks the final
victory over the devil
and his angels. In Jude 9
we read about Michael
the archangel contending
with the devil. On the
resurrection day, there
will be no contending.
.,Te archangel wi- sfmply
cry, "Surrender!" to
Satan and his emissaries.
The Bible states thatfthe
enemies of the Lord will
be made his footstool at
the end of time (Hebrews
10:13). At the end of
time they will be cast
into the everlasting lake
of fire (Matthew 25:41).
The return of the Lord

will mark the end of the
warfare that we fight with
the devil and his angels.
Finally, the trumpet
of God will be sounded.
The trumpet was another
important communication
device on the ancient
battlefields. Certain
sounds directed armies
into certain formations
on the battlefield. It
directed them to press
forward in the midst of
conflict. Sometimes it was
sounded to command a
retreat.
When Jesus returns,
the trump of God will
play the tune of victory
and will direct His people
to go up unto Him. Dear
child of God, on the
resurrection day you
will be called up to meet
Jesus in the air. He will
personally lead you into
Heaven's eternal glory.
Paul wrote that we will
be with him in Heaven
forever (1 Thessalonians
4:17). It is comforting to
know that when we enter
the gates of glory, there
will be no more battles
to fight. There will be no
more sickness, sorrow,
or pain. Our days will be
filled with the majesty of
God and we will be in the
presence of our Savior
forever and ever. All
whom Jesus died for will
be with him in Heaven
forevermore. Comfort one
another with these words!

Frazier keeps 56th Rescue Squadron in the air

Michael Tolzmann
US Army & Air Force
Hometown News

LAKENHEATH, ENG-
LAND In a quiet hallway
here, airmen busily shuffle
by a small plaque hanging
on the wall as though it
does not exist. The rigors of
the military day with flight
schedules, maintenance
requirements and essential-
skills training seem to
consume them as they walk
by.
The plaque reads: "These
things we do so that others
may live."
For the son of a
Crestview man, this motto
is so ingrained into his unit's
culture, there is no need for it
to be recognized as they pass
by.
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Paul
Frazier, son of Robert Frazier
of Crestview, is a member of
the 56thAircraftMaintenance
Unit and directly supports
the 56th Rescue Squadron,
a unit recognized as the
premier combat search and
rescue squadron in Europe.
They exist to provide
worldwide deployable
combat rescue and reaction
force response with 10
elite Air Force pararescue
specialists who operate from
five HH-60G Pave Hawk
helicopters, and a supporting
cast of pilots, mechanics,
trainers and
Frazier is a helicopter
production expediter. "I'm
responsible for all facets of
maintenance on the HH-60G
helicopters," said Frazier.
The 56th Rescue Squadron
stands ready to provide
humanitarian assistance,

non-combatant evacuation,
disaster relief and long-range
rescue anywhere within the
U.S. European Command's
area of responsibility that
potentially spans from
anywhere in Europe to a
large portion of Africa. And
while our country engages in
a worldwide battle against
terror, airmen here know
they may be called to the
fight.
Frazier understands the
gravity of the rescue motto
and his unit's mission.
"Rescue helicopters perform
recovery of downed airmen
during wartime, and are
used to infiltrate enemy
territory with special
operations troops, or remove
them, along with rescue and
recovery of civilians during
some peacetime tragedies.
Keeping these helicopters
flying properly is of great
importance to mission
success, and that's why we
take our job so seriously,"
said Frazier.
In 2006 the squadron
was moved from Naval Air
Station, Keflavik, Iceland, to
England. Now located 70
miles northeast of London
and not far from Cambridge,
the 56th Rescue Squadron
shares this British base
with the U.S. Air Force
48th Fighter Wing, the only
American F-15 fighter wing
in Europe.
Frazier finds living in
England to be interesting.
One of the biggest positives
of living overseas is the
ability to visit other countries
and experience their cultures.
But I miss the multitude of
restaurants and stores that
are available in the United

States," said Frazier.
Frazier's military
experience spans more than
16 years. He has also been
stationed at Patrick Air Force
Base, Fla., Moody Air Force
Base, Ga., Osan Air Base,
South Korea, and Hurlburt
Field, Fla.
He also served in the
military actions Operation
Northern Watch, Turkey,
1997; Operation Southern
Watch, Kuwait, five different
times between 1995 and 1999;
Operation Allied Force, Italy,
1999; and Operation Iraqi
Freedom, Kuwait, 2003.

One day an American
pilot may be downed in a
'hostile foreign land and need
immediate rescue. Or people
under duress at the hand of
a drug-financed militia may
pray for someone to help
separate them from their
captors.
And, although they don't
think about it, the airmen of
the 56th Rescue Squadron
will continue to pass by a
motto hanging on the wall
here, and one day execute
a mission they've come to
understand as the basis for
their culture.

said Hammonds, who is a former
Richbourg student and Crestview
native.
Hammonds went on to play
basketball to Crestview High
School and received a four year
scholarship at Georgia Tech.
"That was a dream come true for
me to have the opportunity to go
to college," stated Tom. "Out of
everything I've done in my life,
I'm most proud of the fact that I
got my education."
Hammonds was drafted into
the NBA in 1989 and picked in

the first round by the Washington
Bullets. The average life span in
the NBA is three years, according
to Tom. "God blessed me to be
able to play for 12 years."
After racing as a pro stock
car driver for eight years during
basketball's off season, Tom
retired from the NBA in 2001 and
became a full-time professional
driver.
Hammonds named his
grandfather as his idol while
growing up, "my grandfather
was a tremendous hard worker,
who loved the Lord. He inspired
me to be the best that I can be."
Hammonds told students,
"you can be anything you want
to in life as long as you trust in
the Lord and are willing to work
hard for what you believe in. You
just have to find your talent. It
takes hard work and dedication
to be successful at anything in
life."

Pee Wee Champs take one home for the holidays

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin
After ar undefeated season,
the Pee Wee League Cowboys
finished as the Division One
champions last week.
With only four returning
players from last season, the
Cowboys looked at a lack
of experience and direction.
But Coach Roy Sims could
see the potential in a team
more valuable then any of his
previous years coaching.
Offensively, the Cowboys
scored more than four

touchdowns a game, Only
surrendering an average of three
points with seven shutouts.
And after a long season
going in untouched by any
other opponent, the Cowboys,
lead by quarterback Roy
Sims IV, the Peewee team
routed the Raiders in an 18-8
championship victory. Sims
threw two touchdowns during
the final.
