In 1911, a group of civic-

professionals got together
5 to form an organization
dedicated to improving their
community.
The National Exchange
Club was born.
Now an equally dedicated
cadre of local men and
women have begun meeting
in Crestview for the same
purpose.
Local organizer Paul
McShane shared the modern
Exchange Club's mission.
"Exchange, America's
Service Club, is a group of
men and women working
together to make our
communities better places
to live through programs
of service in Americanism,
Community Service, Youth
Activities, and its national
project, the Prevention of
Child Abuse," he said.
"From our organization's

earliest days, Exchange
Clubs have been unselfishly
serving their communities
and improving the quality
of life," he continued.
"The diverse array of
Exchange-sponsored
programs and
projects has made
a considerable
impactonAmerica,
enhancing the
lives of countless
men, women and
children across the
nation."
The Crestview
Exchange Club's
first organizational
meeting last Thursday
drew a number of
interested potential
members.
"We're off to a good start,"
McShane said, noting that
20 members are required to
charter a club.
There are already chapters
of the club in Niceville, Fort
Walton Beach and Panama
City.

"They put in thousands
of hours a year," McShane
said.
"It's pretty incredible.
When you put a group of
people together, all of a
sudden really neat things
happen."
To start some of those
"neat things" happening
in the Crestview area,

McShane and fellow
organizer Dorothy Miller
invite interested members
of the community to
their next organizational
meeting Dec. 9.
"It's just overwhelming
sometimes to think about
some of the things we can
do in the community,"
McShane said.

that the heritage of American citizenship might
be mine;
To honor and respect law, to serve my

Though the starting
salary for the position is
about $55,000, because
of Steel's tenure with
the city, he will receive a
salary between $72,000

Council President Chip
Wells questioned Steele
about his residence,

which is outside of the
city limits and just north
of Crestview.
Though his present
home places him only
five minutes from his
office, Steele indicated
a willingness to move
within the city limits if
the question of residency
became an issue.

The act establishes
mechanisms within the
State Board of Education
to analyze, administer
and assess the program.
It also defines a career

"to mean a program that

But the feather in local
educators' caps is the
section of the act "requiring
the Okaloosa County School
District CHOICE Institutes

CHOICE (Community

already been adopted
by Workforce Florida for
replication in 22 other
counties.
Now it's spreading to
every school district in the
state, and local educators
are suddenly eagerly
sought for their expertise
and experience.
At Crestview High,
CHOICE students study
careers as diverse as
aircraft maintenance, crime

construction.
Laurel Hill School

Crestview High "offers

FROM THE

PULPIT Thanks giving
Michael Green Jr.

Be carefulfor nothing; but
in every thing by prayer and
supplication with thanks-
giving let your requests be
made known unto God. -
Philippians 4:6
Are you thankful for the
blessings that God has be-
stowed upon you and your
family? The Bible instructs
us to be a thankful people.

This attitude is mentioned
numerous times in relation
to our Christian walk. As we
celebrate the national day of
Thanksgiving we should be
mindful that an attitude of
thanksgiving should be fos-
tered year round. Let us ex-
plore some biblical passages
that address this subject.
In our opening verse we

notice that the Apostle Paul
admonishes the Philippian
church to be careful for
nothing. He is instructing
them to not be overly anx-
ious about situations that
arise in everyday life.
Are you a worrier? Paul
says that we are not to fret
about troubles in our lives.
What we are to do is cast

our cares upon the Lord
in prayer. Our approach
to the Lord is to be with
an attitude of thanksgiv-
ing. Our tendency is to
worry and stress about
problems and forget to lift
them up to the Lord. We
are not to worry, but pray
with thanksgiving. Peter
says that we are to cast
our cares upon the Lord
because he cares for us (1
Peter 5:7).
Paul writes to the
Colossian church to, "Let
the peace of God rule in
your hearts, to the which
also ye are called in one
body; and be ye thankful
(3:15)." In this chapter he
is outlining the behavior
of the elect of God. When
trouble comes we need to
let God's peace rule our
lives and be thankful for
his goodness. When you
focus on God's mercy and
goodness in your life, you
cannot help but be thank-
ful!
What about the times
when we are suffering
through agonizing tri-
als and tribulations? In
Ephesians 5 Paul instructs
us to be filled with the
Spirit of God. This is not
a one-time filling but
something that is to oc-
cur regularly. In verse 20
he tells us to give thanks
always for all things. Does
this mean that we are to be
jubilant and excited when
troubles occur? Definitely
not. What we are to do is
continue to have an atti-
tude of thanksgiving in the
midst of troubles. We are
to look to the God of grace
that strengthens us dur-
ing times of trials. Peter.
echoes this statement in 1
Peter 5:10 when he writes,

"But the God of all grace,
who hath called us unto
his eternal glory by Christ
Jesus, after that ye have
suffered a while, make you
perfect, establish, strength-
en, settle you." He will see
us through whatever trou-
bles we encounter in this
life. He makes us complete
and sets us in the right
direction when things go
wrong in this world.
If you pause for a few
minutes and take inven-
tory of your life and the
blessings contained there-
in, you cannot help but be
thankful to God. We live in
the greatest country in the
world. Even the poorest
of us live better than the
majority of the rest of the
world. Most of us have a
roof over our heads and
food to eat. We are blessed
to live in relative safety
and freedom. We have
religious liberty that gives
us the opportunity to wor-
ship the Lord without fear
of government reprisal.
Much more could be writ-
ten about the goodness of
God in our lives. May we
endeavor to be a thankful
people in all things. This
attitude will affect your
whole outlook on life.

Crestview News Bulletin I 5

Remembering those

who sacrifice

John Parrott
Crestview News Bulletin

The date was Nov. 11,
1918 when a document was
signed on the strike of the
11th hour, ending World
War I.
The day became known
globally as Armistice
Day, but in 1954 the name
changed in the United
States to Veterans Day.
President Eisenhower
wanted a day to celebrate
the living, as well as
remember and honor the
dead, and it was his idea
to change Armistice Day to
become more inclusive.
It would, he said,
"become a day in which
we honor all who wore the
uniform of our military
services."
This past weekend, the
city of Crestview did just
that.
It began with a parade
attended by about 5000
people and included fire
trucks, marching bands,
floats and a string of local
celebrities and dignitaries.
The Grand Marshal was,
Judge Patterson Maney,
who is a reserve Army
brigadier general and
combat wounded veteran.
Crestview mayor,
David Cadle opened the
weekend celebration by
declaring, "let the parade
begin," after he delivered
a proclamation honoring
military heroes.

80 cra"

, \.f.iL..

However, celebration
cannot overlook the sacrifice
American military men and
women are making every
moment of the day in some
distant land.
Those thoughts would
be echoed over and over,
and then again Sunday,
because, nearly everyone
attending the parade or
formal ceremony at the
memorial wall has a friend,
neighbor, or relative with
military ties.
The most succinct
comment came from Robert
Archer, whose grandson is
serving in Afghanistan.
"It's about all those
young men and women
who can't be here today
and watch the parade. We
are here because people
like my grandson are over
there," he said and pointed
to the west.
"He's in Afghanistan
right now, arid while we
sit here and watch the
parade and enjoy ourselves
in comfort, him and those
around him are not having
a good time. And we'd
better never forget that."
Similar thoughts were
expressed by the speaker
at the 11 a.m. service at
the memorial wall in front
of the Okaloosa County
Courthouse.
"Our children can live
as children without being
stripped of their innocence
by extreme organizations,
or by what we see in

some other nations," said
retired Air Force Col. Karl
Eschmann.
"How different our
world would be today if it
were not for our military
men and women who have
protected our shores. And
it is up to us, the living
survivors, to ensure the
men and women who have
given their all have not
done so in vain."
His words resonated
with the small crowd.
"There are approximately
20 million military veterans
in this country, and out of
our population of over
300 million, we represent
only 10 percent of the
population."
That is a sobering fact
that is often lost in political
posturing and social
criticism, and even today
there are those who have
dishonored our war dead
by interrupting military
funerals to make a religious
or political statement.
However, on this
Veterans Day weekend,
under a cloudless azure sky,
the hope in Crestview was
that none of our children
or grandchildren have to
make the sacrifice that
others have had to make.
Eschmann looked at
the wall and commented
about names of men whom
he knew and had worked
with.
As he read off the
names and gave a brief
commentary about them,
his voice cracked with
emotion.
"We can start paying
our debt by not forgetting,
and millions of us realize
nothing is as important
as defending this nation,"
said Eschmann.

City Council notes: What you missed on Tuesday

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

CRESTVIEW Meeting
Tuesday night because of
Monday's Veterans Day
holiday, the City Council
learned about parade
insurance, held off on
buying an electronic voting
board, and appointed a
retired serviceman to the
Code Enforcement Board.
But first, Mayor David
Cadle presented Crestview
Public Library clerk and
"ordering guru" Sharon
Sutton with her 10-year
service award certificate.
Coincidentally, Sutton,
who became eligible for
early retirement on Nov. 1,
had retired that afternoon.

Parade insurance
With the council
considering Cadle's draft
of a formalized parade
permitting process, Tom
Conley of the Florida
Municipal Insurance Trust
for the Florida League of
Cities was invited to appear
and answer members'
questions.
Council President
Chip Wells expressed
concern that a proposed
requirement requiring
parade sponsors to post a
$1 million insurance policy
"might cause problems" for
smaller organizations.
Conley agreed. "If you're
going to take the stance
that you're going to require
insurance, you're going to
alienate smaller groups that
can't afford it," he said.
A special events policy
which the city could buy
would cover parades and
cost between $1,500 and
$2,000, Conley said.
The mayor agreed to
revise the parade permit
proposal to incorporate

Conley's recommendations
before resubmitting it to the
council.

Sexual offenders
The council heard a first
reading of Ordinance No.
1379, which would restrict
registered sexual offenders
and sexual predators from
living within 2,500 feet of a
school, daycare center, park
or playground.
While such offenders
would be grandfathered into
existing rental residences
until their leases expired,
it would be unlawful for
landlords to renew their
leases unless the lease
contained a renewal clause.
Administrative Services
Director Mike Wing,
whose department drafted
the ordinance with the
2,500-foot limit at the
council's request, stated,
"This is the state statute.
We just expanded it to 2,500
feet."
The state statute
mandates a 1,000-foot
restriction.
Councilman Bob Allen
questioned the benefit of
having the ordinance.
"It gives the city a
mechanism to give some
control over to a landlord
who rents to someone in
these categories," Wing
explained. It gives law
enforcement personnel
authority "to remove a
convicted offender from
these areas."
The ordinance passed
with a 4-1 vote, with Allen
dissenting.

New dog catcher
Citing the need for
a second animal control
officer, Mike Wing requested
the council to consider a
change in Animal Control
Services staffing.

Brian Hughes I Crestview News Bulletin
Mayor David Cadle reads a 10-year service anniversary commendation to
library clerk Sharon Sutton, who had retired that same day.

"We have one officer
who handles a population
of 22,000 people," Wing
said. "It is hard to do the job
365 days a year with only
one person."
Wing requested that a
current kennel assistant
who has been trained and
certified by the state as an
animal control officer be
reclassified as an animal
control officer/kennel
assistant with a $5,000 wage
increase.
While the council
sympathized with Wing's
concern, Councilwoman
Linda Parker, frequently
the body's budgetary
conscience, cast the lone
dissenting vote when Wing's
request was approved, 4-1.

No voting board for now
Assistant Public Services

Director Wayne Steele, at
the council's request, had
researched an electronic
voting board system that
would tally and display
votes on a television
monitor.
"Resources for this type
of item are very limited,"
Steele explained before
presenting figures for a
$2,812 system that included
10 handheld wireless units.
In addition, the city would
have to purchase a monitor
on which to display the
votes.
Parker, again the
budgetarywatchdog, said, "I
appreciate the presentation
but I don't know if we're
ready to invest in a board."
Wing pointed out the
system would also record
council meetings, replacing
the sometimes-cumbersome

audio recording system
currently in use. It could
also project presentation
slides on the monitors.
"We need to improve our
audio-visual capabilities in
these meetings," Wing said.
Councilwoman Brenda
Bush agreed, but suggested
that with the budget year so
young, the council should
wait until after the new year
to look into the system.
Parker concurred, saying,
"If this is something that is
so needed, why was it not
discussed in the budgeting
process?"
The council took no
action on the proposal.

Other actions
Councilwoman Lilly
Conyers introduced military
veteran Raymond Nelson
as her nominee for the Code

Enforcement Board.
Invited to speak, Nelson
cited his military career.
Now that he has retired
from service, he said, "I
Aeed to focus on my civic
duties."
With a second by Bush,
Nelson was unanimously
confirmed for the position.
Mayor Cadle reported
that vandalism has
occurred in the renovated,
but empty, Alatex Building
across from City Hall. The
vandals entered through
an unlocked door, broke
several windows and
spray-painted graffiti on
the second floor.
The mayor requested
that Police Chief Brian
Mitchell's force increase
patrols around the building,
to which Mitchell willingly
agreed.

TEAMWORK STARTS TO SHOW

Pam Golden
Crestview News Bulletin

Sometimes the numbers
don't tell the whole story.
For instance, the
Crestview High School
Boys Soccer Team dropped
two. games, to Pace High
School on the road and
to Tate High School at
home, on Nov. 13 and 15,
respectively.
On Nov. 13, Pace scored
20 minutes into the game,
and then quickly racked
up two more points before
CHS forward David Pyle
nailed the net just before
the half. Pace scored on
two in-the-box penalties
and added one more goal
to end the game 6-1.
On Nov. 15, CHS went
into the half down 2-0,
gave up one goal from an
in-the-box penalty kick and
finished the game 5-1 after
a Tate player kicked in a
CHS scoring attempt.
But in this new year
with a young team and
new coaches, CHS Varsity
Coach Brian Massey said,
the story is the players
beginning to become a
team. Massey watches the
players on the field as well
as the scoreboard.
"They stepped up a lot

tonight," Massey said after
the Tate game.
"Tuesday night they
were not a team. They made
a huge improvement over
Tuesday," he said. "They
talked to each other. They

worked together."
The CHS Boys pick
up immediately after
thanksgiving with a
home game against
Choctawhatchee High
School on Nov. 26, an away

game at Escambia High
School on Nov. 29 and a
home game against Fort
Walton Beach High School
on Nov. 30. Times for all
three games are Junior

Anything they can do, she can do better

Special to The Bulletin

Meet Maeson Piper, a
female Richbourg Middle
School varsity athlete, who
was #72 on the field the
football field.
Maeson is the first girl
ever to be on the Richbourg
football team. She states, "I
feel right at home being on
the field with the boys."
She wasn't even nervous
about trying out or about
what the coaches or the boys
would say. All she wanted to
do is play. She was also very
confident because she is so

experienced, considering this
is her sixth year as a football
player.
She also says that the
coaches and the other players
don't treat her differently
than any other player. The
positions that she plays are
defensive and offensive
tackle; her favorite position
is defense.
She started in just about
every game. The RMS
Roadrunners ended up third
place with a 5-3 winning
season.
During the whole summer
while most girls were at the
beach Maeson was dressed
out in hot, sweaty gear and

practiced in the sweltering
heat on "sand spur," one
of the practice fields justly
named.
While most girls were
at the mall, Maeson was in
a hot, humid weight room
pumping iron.
Maeson does it all. Besides
spending her time practicing
football, she also participates
in pageants in her spare time.
She's been in 17 pageants.
Out of the 17, she won 16.
Before all of her victories,
Maeson faced some
hardships. While she was
playing in a football game,
she hurt her arm badly. When
she arrived at the emergency

room, they discovered that
Maeson had a bone tumor.
It had started when she
was eight years old.
After they healed her, both
she and her mom thought
that her troubles would be
over. But when she was
12 years old, she had to go
back to the hospital and get
her arm worked on again.
Thankfully the procedure
took that time. She's never
had a relapse.
There's more. Look for
Maeson Piper on Richbourg
Middle School's basketball
court. She made the girls
varsity team. Maeson is one
girl who's an inspiration to
