LAUREL HILL The year is 2021.
As NASA prepares for astronauts'
arrival on Mars, robots must unload
automated supply vehicles.
But due to the harsh climate, the task
must be completed in three minutes or
less.
Fortunately, the Robo Hobo is nearing
readiness to accept the challenge.
Under the watchful eye of science
teacher Ben Kackley, about 40 Laurel Hill
School students have been diligently-
working for the past five weeks in
preparation for Saturday's Emerald
Coast BEST Robotics competition.
Gulf Power sponsors the daylong
regional contest, held at the University
of West Florida in Pensacola, with teams
from schools in Escambia, Walton, Santa
Rosa and Okaloosa counties. Laurel
Hill School is the only competitor from
Okaloosa.

different than they are today.
Kids who lived within two miles of
the 1915 brick building walked to school.
The day began with a Bible reading and
recitation of the Lord's Prayer. There was
actually a recess period each morning.

A number of / theater enthusiasts

its first season was planned, beginning
with February's season opener, a lively,

will be announced at the next meeting).
Next year's season will include a

Founded in 1993, BEST
,(Boosting Engineering, Science
and Technology) runs an annual
themed robotics competition. Each
participating school is given the
:same kit of equipment and parts
and has six weeks to build its
robot.
"You really learn what you're
;made of during those six weeks,"
;Kackley said.
: On Saturday, the Robo Hobo
'will have three minutes to leave its
"base," travel across the Martianl

supplies, and deliver it to a bin.
:, Four schools compete in each
:round in a round-robin style
competition.
"Building and competing the

* competition explained Kackley.
I Laurel Hill students from sixth
:grade through 12 have formed not
:only the construction team, but also
:marketing and spirit teams.
; Concurrent to the actual robot
competition, each student team

:. "I've been seeing all the teams

confirmed Kackley.
Laurel Hill's BEST entry is a

Kackley said.
The effort has likewise
motivated members of the tight-
knit community.
As retired Air Force Gen. Robert
Chedister dropped off an armload
of pizza and soft drinks, Kackley
said, "He really helps the kids keep
focused."
Meanwhile, Chedister's
neighbor, General Dynamics
physicist Don Bland, is scrawling
schematics on the science lab
blackboard for an attentive
audience of young engineers.
"He has been really gredt,"
said Kackley. "There's been an
outpouring of help. Advisers like
Bland help the students reach an
idea and make it a reality."
Laurel Hill residents Joel
Weekley and Earl Jernigan loaned
power tools and tool shop services,
respectively. Kenneth Jackson built
a practice field simulating the
competition course. .
Under BEST rules, advisers, both
faculty and community members,
are not permitted to do any of the
robot engineering or construction.
The students must do all' of the
work.
"We had to use what they
(BEST) gave us," explained student
engineer Richard Dixon. "That's
what made it more difficult."
"We have some really good kids
who are really mechanical. It's been
really fantastic to see them each
rise to the challenge as it comes,"-
said Kackley proudly.
Teacher and community advisers
"have a hands-off approach. We just
kinda guide them," he continued.
"You don't think they can do it, but
then you step back and when they
get together, they're really good."
How good? The whole north
county will find out Saturday as
the Laurel Hill Robo Hobo vies to
be the best of the BEST.

days once again when her
family gathered from far and
wide in Palm Coast, Fla. to
celebrate her 101st birthday
on Oct. 12.
Listening to her stories,
people realize some things
never change.
While new school subjects
include foreign languages,
auto repair and computer
science, core subjects such
as reading, math, history,
English, and biology are still
as important now as they
were when Melton graduated
And, as they did back
in the day of that bright,
vivacious Baker Class of 1927
grad, kids still assign each
other silly nicknames that
stick for life.
"I remember J. Wheeler
McCart getting the nickname
'Jug,'" Melton recalled. "He
put his hand on his hip with
his elbow bent. Someone
said, 'You look like a jug.'
The name stuck with him
throughout his life."
Lois Walker was just 3
when her family of nine
moved from Opp, Ala. to a
small town in Florida called
Cobb, which today we know
as Baker.
"The 60-mile move was
made with seven children
ranging in age from 1 to 16
years in two mule-drawn
wagons," said Melton's sister
Opal Middleton, a member
of the Baker Class of 1933.
"Dolly, the milk cow,
walked behind the wagons
until she became exhausted
and had to be left with a farm
family en route," Middleton
said. (Don't worry: The girls'
14-year-old brother Buron
was sent back to fetch Dolly
to the family's new home.)
The Walker family
worked as tenant farmers
for two years while they
cleared 60 acres of their own
and built a four-room house
with lumber cut from their
property. They produced
cotton, as well as most of the
food they ate.
"Lois said she got a head
start picking cotton at age 6
because (sister) Myrtle, age
8, would not pick without
her," Middleton recalled.
At that time, 10h-grade
students could take a teacher
training course. Lois earned
a third-grade teaching
certificate. "I taught in a
one-teacher school at Beach
Branch for a salary of $50 a
month," Melton said. She
also taught for a year in Jay,
Fla.
(Brother Buron took the
exam and earned a first-
grade teaching certificate,
the first one earned in
Okaloosa County. He taught
until World War II, and then
enlisted in the service.)
While Lois Walker was
teaching, she also maintained
her studies so she could
graduate with he'rl das:Still.
'he sav'ed e6ogh&,.iM i -0so
their father could, enlarge
the four-room family home.
Later she and sister Myrtle
bought their family its first
car.
It was "a 1928 Chevrolet
4-door sedan," recalled Opal
Middleton, "a blue color
with a place for a vase in the
back seat."
After graduation, Melton
taught in Laurel Hill, "until
I married a school friend,
Curtis Melton, a sailor
stationed at Pensacola." The
couple moved to Norfolk,
Va. where they had three
children.
Lois Walker Melton
graduated from William
& Mary College "while
teaching, being a Navy
wife and a mother," said
Middleton. After a 25-year
teaching career, she retired
in 1972 and moved back to
Florida in 1986.
Joining Melton at her
recent birthday party were
her nephew J.P., a 1962
Baker alumnus, and his wife
Barbara, of Crestview, along
with 50 or so family and
friends from as far away as
London. Her younger sister,
Opal Middleton, flew in
from La Jolla, Calif., for the
occasion.
Middleton said her sister's
philosophy mirrors that of an
older lady who was asked,
"To what do you attribute
your long life?"
"When it rains, I let it,"
was the sage reply.

Reflections from Iraq
II Bovd
Allen Boyd
Recently, I had the
opportunity to lead a bipartisan
congressional delegation
(CODEL) to Iraq to meet with
our troops and get a firsthand
look at our military operations
and Iraqi security, political, and
economic conditions.
As someone who has worn
the uniform in Vietnam, I
thought it was important for me
to get on the ground and talk
with our soldiers, our generals,
and the Iraqi leaders about the
obstacles and opportunities
confronting our men and
women in uniform and the Iraqi
government.
I had many reflections
following the CODEL to the
Middle East, and while I am
more convinced than ever that
our troops are performing
at the top of their game, this
trip also confirmed my belief
that we must require the Iraqi
government to step up and
provide security for their own
country.
Flying into that theatre on a
C-130 with American soldiers
going into combat brought back
many memories for me of my
experience in Vietnam almost
40 years ago. I was buoyed by
the enthusiasm of these young
men and women. Seeing the
outstanding work they are
doing under very difficult
circumstances brought me
face to face with why America
is the greatest country in the
world. I was encouraged to
find that the morale amongst
our troops is very high, and the
developments we have made in
Iraq are due to the strength and
the dedication of our military.
This trip reinforced my
belief that our problems in Iraq
do not lie with our military;
they lie with our policy and
with the Iraqis themselves.
This was evident as I toured
a marketplace in the Rashid
district of southern Baghdad,
an area that is still known to
be very dangerous and violent.
Our soldiers, in many cases, are
out on the frontlines literally
policing the streets of Baghdad
and refereeing a civil war in
Iraq. Our troops are performing
a function that is typically left
up to local police and is not a
standard military role, and it is
certainly not a sustainable long
term role for our military.
After the marketplace
tour, the CODEL met with
General David Petraeus and
Ambassador to Iraq Ryan
Crocker. I could not have been
more impressed with these
two men, and there is no doubt
that they are the best and the
brightest.
General Petraeus candidly
addressed my concerns that
our military is acting as a police
force in Iraq. He explained
that while we have had some
success in training individual
Iraqi security forces, the Iraqi
government has been unable to
develop the infrastructure and
logistical support necessary to
manage and organize them.-
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri
Al-Maliki reiterated this concern
and admitted to our group that
the Iraqi government is having
a very difficult time organizing
a functional government due
to the conflicts between the
political sects and the inherent
tribal nature of the Iraqi people.
These assessments and my own
observations have reinforced for
me that it is not possible for our
country to solve Iraq's internal
and sectarian differences -
differences that have plagued
their people for over a thousand
years and differences that they
seem no closer to resolving.
The most troubling reports
from this trip are about the
strain that our continuing
conflict in Iraq has had on our
military readiness. General
Petraeus acknowledged his
concerns that our military forces
have been stretched thin by
current operations in Iraq and
that currently we would be
unable to respond to another
serious conflict if we needed to
do so. This disturbing fact was
confirmed at every stop I made
and echoed by every soldier I
met.
Our country is making
a major investment in Iraq,
not only in U.S. casualties
and injuries, but also in
taxpayer dollars, to the tune
of $2.5 billion a week. The
Administration must rethink
how we are using our resources
and our assets so that we can
fight terror more effectively,
and we must require the Iraqi
people to provide their own
security on the ground. Also,
this Administration must
recognize that our conflict in
Iraq has extended our military
in a way that could be seriously
detrimental to our country's
national security interests.
Additionally, this
Administration has not put
enough emphasis on the
diplomacy and political
persuasion necessary to achieve
stability in Iraq. The U.S. State
Department must engage in
robust diplomacy with Iraq's
neighbors, in the Middle East to
address the Iraq conflict. Iraq's
neighbors have a substantial
stake in Iraq's future, and
by engaging these countries
and opening up avenues of
diplomacy, we can lead a
collective effort to bring stability
to the region.
There are no perfect solutions
in Iraq, but we can address the
challenges we face if we do
so together as Americans, not
as Democrats or Republicans.
For this reason, our CODEL
included Democratic and
Republican members of
Congress so that we can foster a
bipartisan dialogue to deal with
our most difficult and pressing
foreign policy issue.
We all agree that
bipartisanship equals progress,
and we will only be able to
resolve the situation in Iraq
if we find areas of common
ground and work together.
It is my sincere hope that
this bipartisan CODEL and
similar efforts to promote
bipartisanship in Washington
will begin a new era in which
Congress can join together
to put pressure on this
Administration to turn control
of Iraq to the Iraqis, bring our
troops home, and develop a
long term strategy that is in the
best interests of our country.
Congressman Allen Boyd
(D-Fla.) represents the Second
Congressional District of Florida.
Landmark drivers handbook partnership saves Florida taxpayers money
Ken Underwood
As lawmakers work to cut
property taxes and balance
the state budget, there's a
contradictory move afoot in
Tallahassee to actually increase
the burden on taxpayers on
something the state is currently
receiving for free.
At issue is the printing
of Florida's Official Drivers'
Handbook the publication that
provides lifesaving rules of the
road to new drivers. For the past
four years, my company, the
National Safety Commission,
has partnered with the
Department of Highway Safety
and Motor Vehicles to print
and distribute more than two
million handbooks every year at
no cost to state taxpayers. We do
this in exchange for the right to
advertise in the book. Just like
a newspaper or magazine, this
arrangement helps pay for our
printing and distribution costs.
This idea won the
Department of Highway Safety
and Motor Vehicles the highly
coveted Davis Productivity
Award a benchmark of
government innovation to
protect taxpayer dollars.
We won this work after
the department, at the urging
of competing traffic schools,
went through a public bidding
process. We were the only
company that decided to
actually compete to partner
in this inventive approach
to printing the handbook.
In fact, an Inspector General
investigation of the contract
award process found competitor
complaints of unfairnesswere,.
"not sustained."
Today, this partnership is
working well for Florida's
taxpayers.
An independent analysis by
Florida TaxWatch estimates this
landmark will save Florida $2.5
million over a five-year period.
The taxpayer watchdog group
estimates that if implemented
across state government, the
model could save taxpayers
more than $20 million.
This innovative approach
to save precious taxpayer
dollars should be welcomed
at a time when the state is
cutting its budget for schools,
health care and other important
services. Gov. Charlie Crist
understands the importance of
this groundbreaking effort. He
vetoed budget language that
would have cancelled this good
contract.
Unfortunately, some in
Tallahassee don't agree with the
governor. The same businesses
that passed up the opportunity
to compete for the contract
are now trying to kill it at
the Capitol and in the courts.
Rival companies received a
lifeline in the budget from a
lawmaker who is misusing his
power to cancel a legal contract.
They are pressuring the
department to keep information
from consumers. They have
engineered a lawsuit to reinstate
the budget language the
governor struck and to derail
this successful public/private
partnership.
If successful, the special
interest effort to kill this
partnership would set a
dangerous precedent for any
business that enters into a
contract with the state in good
faith. It would have a chilling
effect on any future public-
private partnerships. No one
will want to do business with
the State of Florida when
award-winning contracts can be
canceled "willy-nilly" because
they run afoul of the friends of a
powerful lawmaker.
The National Safety
Commission has filed its own
suit to protect this landmark
partnership.
Our countersuit contends
the budget language slipped
in by my competitors is
unconstitutional because it
unlawfully impairs the National
Safety Commission's contract
rights and amends substantive
law on an issue not pertaining
to appropriations.
Why should this matter to
Florida citizens? If you drive on
Florida's roadways, you should
pay attention to this.
Besides the fiscally
conservative attributes of this
partnership, to promote safer
roads 750,000 handbooks are,
distributed to high school
students each spring, free of
charge. This puts lifesaving
safety information in the hands
of young drivers just before they
hit the roadways every summer.
Thankfully, there are still
leaders in the House and in the
Senate, guided by principle and
integrity, who see the merits
of this effort. They are ready,
willing and able to put an end to
the special interest shenanigans
that threaten this laudable
public/ private partnership.
In the face of other powerful
interests, they need the support
of Florida consumers and
businesses to do what's right
and allow this partnership to
continue. That's all I ask. And
that's what Florida should
expect.

Americans conduct

some billion or so of those

But the process is often
futile, pulling up obscure

them.
Patrons unfamiliar with
this type of searching often
insist that I should be able

It's natural to want to

I got the full version this
time, which began with
a photo of Lee Marvin's

about Marvin being laid to

he "was only a famous

Crestvlew News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW -
Okaloosa County Public
Works Director Danielle
Slaterpryce had good
road news and bad road
news for members of the
Crestview Area Chamber,
of Commerce's govern-
ment issues committee,
Tuesday morning.
The good news is that
her department is abreast
of the county's road devel-
opment and repair needs.
The bad news is that
those needs far outstrip
available funding.
The county maintains
592 miles of paved roads,
Slaterpryce said, as 'well
as 286 miles of unpaved
roads, 67 bridges and nine
large box culverts. Most of
those unpaved roads are
north of Interstate 10 in the
first and third districts.
"We have a challenge in
our county," Slaterpryce
said. While many roads
need resurfacing, just
$100,000 per each of the
county's five districts is:
allocated toward that pur-
pose. .
With the cost of asphalt
alone averaging $90,000
per mile, even with in-
;house labor and equip-
ment, the allocations do
not go far enough.
As the northern end of
the county experiences
an increase in popula-
tion, roads are start-
ing to approach their
traffic design volumes.
Three major roads in the
Crestview ,area have al-
ready met and are exceed-
mg Florida Department of
Transportation traffic vol-
ume limitations.
Airport Road between
state Road 85; John Givens
Road, and P.J. Adams
Parkway from Antioch
Road to state Road 85;
and U.S. Highway 90 from
.state Road 4 in Milligan to
Antioch Road will soon
be unable to support any,
additional growth in their
respective neighborhoods,
Slaterpryce said. And yet
new developments are
planned for some of these
areas, she added.
To improve these and
other area roads to meet
the expected needs of mo-
torists by 2015, Slaterpryce
,said, more than $617 mil-
lion would have to be"
found for District 1 alone.
District 3's needs will

exceed $40 million. (The
county total will surpass
$700 million.)
Funding for county
roadwork comes primarily
from gas taxes, which raise
only slightly more than $4
million a year. .
"We're trying to find new
and innovative ways to pro-
vide services," Slaterpryce
said. Some of these options
might include:
Federal and state
grants, which generally re-
quire a 50 or even 65 per-
cent local match;
Maximizing in-house
work, which would require
hiring another crew-and its
equipment;
Increasing county
sales taxes;, although "past
experience has shown that
this has not been success-
ful in raising transportation
fundss" Slaterpryce said.
Adding an ad-valorem
tax to the transportation
fund;
Assessing the final 54
of the Local Option Gas Tax
(which would add about $5
million a year);
Assessing impact fees
and proportionate fair
share fees for road capacity
improvement; and
Increasing state rev-
enue sharing.
"Needs are overwvhelm-
ing current funding,"
Slaterpryce concluded
But to augment her de-
partment's resources, she
jokingly told the chamber
members, "There's a collec-
tion bucket at the door."
Fall Festival coming to Crestview
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
There's nothing quite like
a street festival in fall.
Moms and dads, young
'uns and grandparents,
couples hand in hand, and
good friends strolling up
and down the main drag.
There's music playing,
the aroma of local food
cooking and the joyous,
raucous sounds of laughter
and frivolity.
It's all coming to
Crestview's Main Street
this Saturday, Oct. 27, from
3 until 8 p.m. at the annual
Fall Festival. Sponsored
jointly by the Main Street
Crestview Association and
the city, it's an opportunity
to head Downtown and join
in the fun.i
Main Street Association
President Mickey Rytman
promises "just a little bit of
everything for the kids and
the family, and a lotta .free
goodies."
Activities will include a
kids' train chugging up and
down the street; the antics of
Jeff Meister performing as
Twister T. Clown; the artistry
of stilt-walker, juggler,
cyclist and street entertainer
Wade Henry; and the toe-
tapping sounds of country
singers Jim Hubbard, Kelton
French and Lindsey Rose,
respectively.
The harmonies of
the Spare Parts, an area
barbershop quartette, will
fill the air and the danceable
tunes of DJ Tony Larkins will
get you movin' in the street.
And if you want to make
a little music yourself, there
will be karaoke available.
Organizers promise
mouth-watering food from
barbeque eateries and other
local establishments; several
church groups, Main Street
merchants and other
organizations handing out
candy; slides and space
walk bouncers.
Wear your Halloween
costume; judging will
be held for the best
outfit in seven
agecategories,
including
one for
adults age 18
and over.
The Gordon
Martial Arts
center will
host a haunted
house as well.
Last year's
Fall Festival had an
attendance of more than
4,500'people enjoying games,

offered by 74 participants.
when Marvin, a Marine
PFC, got shot in the
posterior on Iwo Jima,
he was consoled by his
sergeant, Bob Keeshan.
"Sgt. Keeshan was the
bravest man I ever knew,"
the story quotes Marvin as
having said on The Tonight
Show.
Then in 2003, another
author added a closing
paragraph, equally
exciting, about Fred
Rogers, claiming he was
a Navy SEAL "with over
(sic) 25 confirmed kills to
his name."
Alas, almost all of it is
lively fabrication.
True, Lee Marvin was
an enlisted Marine and
served in the Pacific
during World War II, said
Snopes.com, even getting
wounded in the heinie.
"However, his injury
occurred during the battle
of Saipan in June 1944,"
Snopes said, "not the

battle for Iwo Jima, which
took place several months
later in February 1945."
Marvin received a
Purple Heart, but not the
Navy Cross as the e-mail
claimed.
Bob Keesan also enlisted
in the Marines, but several
months after the battle
for Iwo Jima. He saw no
combat at all.
As for the grandiose
exploits of Mr. Rogers,
they, like other urban
legends purporting to
describe his supposed
violent past, are untrue.
"Fred Rogers never served
in the military," Snopes
said.

trigger finger hits the
"forward" button, shoot
on over to Snopes.com and
see if the tale you're about
to share is really true. This

Partners Chef Chris Chirum and Susan McDuffie spent almost two years making the
Wild Olive a reality
Wld Olive grafted to
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW Not long
ago, Christopher Chirum
;was Sandestin resort's
executive chef, supervising
13 restaurants, nine chefs
and more than 125 cooks.
Now he's got a place of
his own. "This is a little
bit different," Chirum
understated with a smile.
The Wild Olive
Restaurant opened on
North Pearl Street in late
August. It took close to two
years for Chirum and his
partner, Susan McDuffie,
- .*to refurbish the 1930s era
Rosalyn Kolanowski home
into the casually gracious
,establishment patrons now
experience.
"We stumbled for about a
t year" deciding what to call
the restaurant, McDuffie
4 said. Ultimately the eatery's
name was recommended by
her daughter, inspired by
Scripture (Romans 11:17-18
to be precise).
The Wild Olive boasts a
warm, attractive ambience
with beautiful fatwoodd"
floors and trim made
of lumber from an 1870
Alabama cotton gin. (It is
estimated the milled wood
*was already nearly 200
years old when it was used
to build the gin.) The soft
deep green walls are hung
with a variety of art and
artifacts, and many of the
furnishings are antiques.
"The response [to the
restaurant] has been real
positive," Chirum said.
"We've been a little busier
than we anticipated."
Chirum graduated
from Johnson & Wales
University's internationally
acclaimed College of
CulinaryArts in Providence,
R.I. His menu of primarily
Italian cuisine features
his own sauces, some of
which, are influenced by
French and Mediterranean
cooking. Nightly specials
augment the menu.
*Entrees range in price
from $10.95 for Spaghetti
Marinara to $24.95 for an
exquisite Filet Mignon
Bordelaise. The Pearl Street
Grouper, topped with jumbo
lump crab and almonds, is
the most popular entree.
Appetizers include
Choctawhatchee Bay Crab
Cakes and a signature Fried
Zucchini Ernesto named
for Pittsburgh restaurateur
Ernie Vallozzi, for whom
Chirum ran several
restaurants.
Desserts include such
homemade specialties .as
key lime pie and creme
bri~le,-the most popular
selection on the dessert
menu. But many can't resist
the sinfully wonderful
cannoli dipped in dark
chocolate. "The cannolis
are pretty popular in my
family," Chirum said. "My
kids love 'em."
"The menu is a little
Americanized," Chef
Chirum explained. "I didn't
want to bring in dishes that
people weren't familiar
with." But as patrons
become more accustomed
to the cuisine, he hopes to
occasionally offer dishes
such as veal and lamb
shanks.
"I want to do some
nice, rustic kind of food to
see what the response is,"
Chirum said.
Janice Crose is among
those area residents who
are already considered
Wild Olive regulars. "It's
so nice to have a fine dining
restaurant in Crestview,"
said Crose. "What I like is
that their staff is friendly
and their service is good.".
Regulars such as Crose
Crestview
know mhey can call ahead
and request custom dishes
not offered on the menu.
As for future plans, "we
would love to start having
feature guest chefs doing a
menu at they'd provide,"
said Mc uffie.
Also under consideration
are "cooking classes on
Monday nights," she said,
and a chef's table in which
patrons' can actually sit in
the kitchen, interact with
Chef Chirum and his staff,
and sample various dishes
as they are prepared for
dining room patrons.
Catering is another
service under consideration.
"I catered for years," said
McDuffie. "It's something I
love do."
Now open Tuesday
through Saturday for
dinner, on Wednesday the
Wild Olive starts serving
afternoon lunch. Ultimately
the establishment will add
23 jobs to the local economy.
"People say this is what
we needed in Crestview,"
said Chirum. Judging by the
diverse crowd on a typical
weekday night, he seems to
have found his niche in the
local restaurant market.

Crestview News Bulletin
After several months
of preparation, Tom
Hammonds debuted his
new racing garage in
Holt. It was something
that people in the
community have been
waiting to get a glimpse
of for quite some time.
The racing garage
consists a dyno-
room that Hammonds
demonstrated in front
of a crowd, Saturday.
The dynamometer
diagnostic room simply
checks the running of
an engine for an amount
of time. This can let the
crew know whether
or not the engine is
in good condition for
the race or if it needs
to still be worked on
before insertion into
the vehicle.
Along with the
dyno-room was the
show room, which is
located directly in the
front of the garage
for viewers to see
when doing business
with Hammonds and
Hammonds racing.
Hammonds also showed
the crowd all the ins
and outs of what he has
Mending over at Milton Pumping up for Vernon
It seems that Crestview
is having a little trouble
with being consistent on
the field. Don't get me
wrong, the fight they put
on against Choctaw was
stellar and the numbers
blew right up out of the
atmosphere, but they
keep finding themselves
always in a slump every
other game.
Why?
That I can't
understand. From Head
Coach Matt Brunson's
standpoint, he's pretty
much stepping up the
passing game and putting
the running game to the
back burner. But did he
not do that in their big
game against Choctaw?
The numbers for
Crestview didn't shine as
much as they're last three
games against a dual
wielding Fort Walton
Beach. Crestview's Jason
Parker only passed 13-
of-27 for,139 yards. Even
in my interview, with
Jordan Glover and Austin
Moser, who both would
know what went wrong,
said that they need to
work on their blocking,
period.
Jordan Glover said
they took a step back.
Steps back that's going
to put them now into a
position of work-horsing
to that second district
championship
spot.
The four
fumbles they
had didn't.
help, as well
as the three
interceptions.
So now
Crestview is looking at
Milton. This is a game
that Crestview needs to
win so they can set their
sites on Navarre. The
Raiders are the Bulldogs
golden egg to grab. If
they beat Navarre ,they
are in strongly for the
district championship
game.
The Bulldogs can come
back still.
h-P
R
After a total of 340
yards in total offense,
the Gators routed the
Devils from Holmes
County 31-13.
This was a game
that Baker needed, and
needed badly.
Plenty of players
across the line-up scored
touchdowns including:
C a m e r o n
Domangue,
K ella n
Meeks and
ie MarcusJones
I,with four
successful
PobcrtYoung kicks by
David Beck,
including a field goal
that started things off
for 37 yards.
Now, don't get me
wrong, Holmes County
wasn't exactly a top-
notch district holder,
but they were still a
team that Baker needed
to prove themselves.
Domangue was the
top rusher for 79 yards
with 24 carries and 4-of-
10 for 96 yards passing.
The numbers weren't
through the roof but
David Beck had a great
night also with four
successful extra kicks
and a field goal, giving
him 7 points for that
night.
What swayed
the game to Baker?
Fumbles.
Holmes County had
four fumbles, with
two lost that definitely
made an impression on
the end result, giving
Baker the win.
Now Baker is looking
to the Yellow Jackets
from Vernon. Vernon is
a game that Baker needs
to win to get back on the
district track they were
hoping, for.
The game is at Baker,
this Friday at 7 p.m.
For more information
on Baker and their
coverage please visit
our Web site at www.
crestviewbulletin.com.
See you on Friday.
