Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW The Crestview Area
Chamber of Commerce has announced
its opposition to "the possibility of the
unionization of some of our workforce,"
said chamber President Mike Roy.
While the chamber's concern is the
potential unionization of businesses
in. the Crestview area in general, an
upcoming vote for union representation
at L3 Crestview Aerospace encouraged
the chamber's opposition. *
"We're just trying to represent the
chamber members and their concern about
the community," Roy said. "If unions start
showing up, they can put a drain on.the
economic development we're seeing."
The Chamber of Commerce worries
about the northern part of the county's
ability "to develop and grow its economy
because companies have proven they
are reluctant to relocate to communities
where there is union activity," Roy said.
"In our experience, unions claim they
provide job security," Roy said, "but in
reality (they) provide a false sense of job
security when they drive the cost of doing
business so high that companies are no

CRESTVIEW -In the hit Broadway

Hear the Bells."
If she lived in Crestview, she wouldn't,
need heartthrob Link Larkin for
inspiration: She could stand anywhere
downtown during the day.
Thanks to member Hugh Allen and
deacon William Lewis, chimes that
once graced the First Bank of Crestview
now ring out the hours from the First
Presbyterian Church.
"It's been one of our pet projects for
three years," said Alien. The old unit
from the bank relied on a tape player,
which now resides in the Baker Block
Museum.
Today a computer program created
specifically for chime systems operates
the new carillon.
"The tapes were really worn and we
couldn't do anything with them,"Allen
explained. "And the speakers were
blown away by a hurricane."
Though dramatically different from
the classic images of barefoot bell
ringers in old European cathedrals, the
modern BRG Carillon Bell System used
b\ the Presbyterian-Church offers many'
advantages.
For instance, the system has "many
tunes, at least a thousand," said.Allen.
Beginning at 8 a.m., the carillon plays the
familiar Westminster chimes on the hour.
At 9 a.m., noon, 3 and 6 p.m., the chimes
are followed by a few minutes of hymns
randomly selected by the system from its
repertoire.
"Come time for a change of seasons,
like Christmas, it'll automatically begin
to play Christmas songs, on the Fourth
of July it'll play patriotic songs," said

budding chef was trying his
own hand at cooking.
In high school, Seth tried
coursework in computer
science, Paula Knight, CHS's
culinary arts instructor, said.
Pamela Sisneros came to her
one day and said, "He hates
what he's doing. Do you
have room in your class?"
Seth became one of the first
boys in the program.
With his original recipe
for Wild Mushroom Sauce
with Lemon Thyme Pasta
(which he has graciously
shared with News Bulletin

at its state student culinary
competition debut.
Crestview placed an
impressive 12th out of nearly
60 competitors, surpassing
many schools that had been
sending competitors to the
event for years.
To receive his NRA
National Certificate of
Achievement, Sisneros
had to pass two national
tests, meet at least 52 out
of 70 competencies, and
perform at least 400 hours of
restaurant work.
Since graduation from
CHS in May, Sisneros has

CHIMES continued from 1
the Rev. Mark Broadhead,
pastor of the church. "It's
quite a system."
While the music played
daily is traditional, the
system's accuracy is pure
atomic age: The computer
that controls the chimes is
updated by the national
atomic clock, even after a
power failure.
The system "comes as a
box and you put it together,"'
explained Lewis. "It's made
to perform this one function
and do it very, very. well."
The chimes that .rinrg out
across Creshtiev ha\ e been
/digitally sampled by BRG
from some of the world's
most revered carillons.
Diane Baker, who works
at Teel & Waters Real Estate
across the street from
the church, is .among the
many downtown workers
who delight in the ..daily
chimes.
"I stepped outside 4
few weeks ago and I heard
these beautiful bells," she
told Rev. Broadhead. "I just
praised the Lord listening
to those bells. I just wanted
you to know how much
I, and many people in the
community, enjoy the bells.
Thank you!"
"We're have nothing but
good compliments about
the church music being
back in Crestview," said a
proud Allen.
The chimes, while
offering a pleasing interlude
from downtown's hustle
and .bustle, have deeper
significance for some
residents.
"We've h4ad a number
of phone calls from people
who say how meaningful
it's been for them" to
hear the chimes, said
Broadhead.
"One lady is thinking
about coming back because
she had gotten out of synch
with going to church,"
Broadhead said, "but when
she heard the bells, she
decided it was time to come
back."

longer competitive."
Companies that can't
compete in the marketplace
"respond by laying off
(workers), moving to a
less costly environment or
closing their doors," Roy
said.
The chamber is further
concerned that "unions
create the perception
of an 'us-against-them'
environment," Roy said.
For area businesses to be
successful, what is needed
"is management working
together with employees
toward the same goal," he
said.
Bob Wood, the
International Association of
Machinists and Aerospace
Workers (IAM) Dallas-
based communications
representative, disagreed,
saying that the union is
"offering (employees) a
voice on the job.
About 700 of Crestview
Aerospace's more than
1,000 employees could
be covered by the IAM
contract if Wednesday's
vote is in favor of it, said
L3's public relations
manager Lance Martin.
"Without a union
contract, it's employment
at will," Wood said. "The
employer can fire you for
any reason, no matter how
good you are, no matter
how many years you
worked there, no matter
what."
With a "just cause"
clause in a union contract,
Wood explained, "you
can't be fired for just any
reason."
But, said Chamber
of Commerce Executive
Director Wayne Harris,
"employees tend to work
the union contract more
than they work toward the
profitability and success
of the company. If the
company's not profitable,
nobody has a job."
The chamber is also
concerned a union
contract hampers workers'
flexibility to innovate and
perform multiple tasks,
Harris said.
"In a union environment,
you can only do the work
in the parameters of the
contract," Harris explained.
"It's limiting. That doesn't
help the business any
and it doesn't help the
employee any. If you have
to do something to get the
job done but you can't do
it because you're held back
by the union, the business
has a problem."
But from the IAM
standpoint, a union contract
would "be good for the
workers. As they are able to
negotiate higher wages and
better benefits, it will help
the entire area economy,"
said Wood. "Those good
jobs in the manufacturing
sector are what help build
the economy."
Does the area economy
need that kind of help? Not
according to the Chamber
of Commerce.
"Right now we have a
great working environment
with area businesses,"
Harris said, "and we have
the potential for other
businesses to come here.
"But I can tell you quite
honestly, representingtheex
officio economic developer
for the area, one of the first
questions a business asks
is, 'What is the strength of
the unions?'"
Chamber President Mike
Roy concurred. "It has beeAi
our experience, locally, that
unions tend to hinder out
competitive edge."
If a majority of Crestview
Aerospace employees
vote to accept the union's :'
presence at the plant,
the jobs of workers
who choose not to join
the labor organization
are protected through
Florida's status as a "right
to work" state.
Article 1,, 6 6, of the
state constitution assures
workers, "The right of
persons to work shall not
be denied or abridged on
account of membership
or non-membership in
any labor union or labor
organization."
opening his own gourmet
restaurant.
Meanwhile, his short-
term goal is to be accepted
at the prestigious Culinary
Institute of America in Hyde
Park, N.Y.
While the young chef
insists "I love cooking
everything," his Crestview
High instructor knows her
former student slightly
better.
"He was always cooking
something with mushrooms,
pasta or making creme
br-alee," said Knight. "It

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2007
4 I Crestview News Bulletin RELIGION
Let us therefore follow after
the things which make for
peace, and things wherewith
one may edify another. -
Romans 14:19
I have recently
undertaken the
disassembly of an old
structure on my property.
I had forgotten how
much easier it is to tear
down something than it
is to build it up. Boards
are pounded out with
ease and there is even a
certain euphoria involved
with busting through old
drywall with reckless
abandon. One does not
have to exercise much care
when tearing something
apart. However, there is
usually a big mess left to
clean up afterwards as you
sift through the battered
debris.
The same principle
applies to the manner in
which we interact with
other people. We find it
easier to tear other people
down than build them up.
The satisfaction derived
from this practice is that
it somehow makes us feel
better about ourselves.
I assure you that this
emotion is short-lived,
and like my construction
project at home, there is
usually a mess to clean
up. The wreckage of hurt
feelings, resentment, and
bitterness is infinitely more
difficult to mend than any
natural destruction that we
can cause.
The Bible instructs
us to follow after things
that edify. The word
edify means to build up
or establish. The Apostle
Paul instructs the Roman
church to seek those things
that make for peace and
build up those around
them. They were fighting
over days of the week and
what type of meat was
acceptable to eat. Paul
recognized that there were
those in this church that
were tearing one another
down. His command was
for them to build up one
another.
In his letters to the
Corinthian and Ephesian
churches, he states that
God blessed them with
gifts for the edifying
of the body of Christ
(1 Corinthians 14:12,
Ephesians 4:12). As God's
children who have been
quickened by the Spirit,
we all have unique abilities
that can edify another in
many aspects of life.
Is your church a
place where people are
constantly being built up
or is everyone trying to
selfishly tear one another
down? What about your
home? What about work?
We all have the capacity
to either encourage or
discourage someone else.
It takes' some work
on our part to build up
another person. First we
must put away selfishness
and pride. The Bible
refers to our tendency
to be selfish as "living
after the flesh" (Romans
8:12). It is our nature to
be selfish. When we are
living after the flesh, we
will both knowingly and
unknowingly tear others
down in order to make
ourselves look better.
However, whatever
satisfaction is garnered
from this action is short-
lived, because the flesh is
never satisfied. We must
further tear down others to
feel better about ourselves.
This is a very destructive
cycle!
The Bible teaches us that
true joy and contentment
comes from the labor of
building up others. If
we actively seek ways to
encourage others then we
receive true joy. This is our
responsibility as citizens in
the kingdom of God. Paul
wrote, "For the kingdom
of God is not meat and
drink; but righteousness,
and peace, and joy in the
Holy Ghost. For he that in
these things serveth Christ
is acceptable to God, and
approved of men (Romans
14:17-18)."
You can choose to
build up or tear down
by the words you speak
to another. How many
times have we caused
hurt feelings amongst
our brothers / sisters in
Christ, family members
or friends because of an
inappropriately spoken
word? In Proverbs 25:11,
the wise man Solomon
wrote that, "A word fitly
spoken is like apples of
gold in pictures of silver."
Let us labor to build up
one-another in both action
and deed, and follow after
peace.

and round they went, and
as they went, the money
raised for children's cancer
research increased.
On Friday, Oct. 12, nearly
a dozen youngsters at the
Edney Street Head Start/
Early Head Start Center
in Crestview took to their
tricycles and bikes and
pedaled furiously around
the track in a Trike-A-
Thon to raise funds for St.
Jude's Cancer Research for
Children.
Head Start and Early
Head Start participants
throughout Okaloosa
County participated in the
fund-raiser.
The local tally isn't in yet,
but flat donations and per-
lap donations will likely
yield "between $300 and
$400," said Michele Hooper,
early childhood education
manager at the Crestview
Head Start/.Early Head
Start Center.

LAUREL HILL How can
you .raise money for the volunteer
fire department?
On Saturday, Oct. 27, from
9 a.m. until 3 p.m., you can start
by dunking City Manager Tim
Bolduc.
Your kids can help out by
hopping in the big, bouncing
spacewalks. Then you can all feast
on yummies from a fish fry, hot
dogs and all sorts of other tasty
foods.
The fun is all part of the Laurel
Hill Volunteer Fire Department
Open House and fund-raiser to be
held at the City Hall and firehouse
building.
In addition to the dunking booth
and spacewalks, there will be a
hayride in the field across the street
from City Hall. Sparky the Fire
Dog will be on hand with advice
on-fire safety, and the firemen will
be distributing candy to the kids.
Wear your Halloween costume!
SouthernLINC Wirelesg is a
major sponsor, Bolduc said, and the
Open House is a great opportunity
to meet the firefighters and check
out their equipment.
Raffle tickets will be sold for
great prizes, said Bolduc, "and
they're going to dunk me in
the booth," he added woefully,
while fervently hoping for balmy
weather. "But it's all about raising
money for the fire department," he
conceded.

teaches at Richbourg, was
Austin's soccer and tennis
coach for his three years at
the school.
Moore was not surprised
that Austin chose to enter
the Marines Corps after
graduation.
Even as a middle
school student, he already
possessed many of the
qualities of a good Marine,
Moore said. He was
dedicated, disciplined and
committed to excellence.
Dance coach Cherrie
Manchester met Austin
eight years ago when he
and her daughter, Denee,
briefly dated and attended
Cotillion together.
Manchester found out
about Austin going to Iraq
through a conversation
with his mother, Amanda
Cook, who is a teacher at
Laurel Hill School.
Lance Cpl. Austin is 21
years old and is a rifleman.
He has been in the Marines
for more than three years,
and he is honored to serve
with his fellow Marines in a
foreign land to work toward
defeating terrorism.
He is going to be gone
for at least six months and
will be on roving patrols in
Iraq.
He feels that it is not a
war anymore, but a conflict
in Iraq.
Furthermore, he said
things are better over
there and it will continue
to get better, as long as
the Marines and other
members of the military
can do their jobs.
He also thinks America's
people were immediately
ready to beat terrorism at
all costs right after Sept.
11, but now they have lost
that drive and they need to
regain it if they plan to end
terrorism.
Lance Cpl. Austin Cook
had this advice for the
students at RMS: The key

In my last column, I said
I felt that some changes
were good.
No doubt, some of you
readers felt that perhaps
my column was changing
writers or even coming
to an end.
Fortunately, that's not
the case! I'm still here,
and hope that I"Will now'
return to writing my bi-
monthly column. I realize
that, it's been a while,
but my absence was
unavoidable, and due to
several "changes."
The first change began
the last week of July, as
we left for a planned
weeklong visit to my
grandparents' house in
Napoleon, Mich.
As I said, we'd only
planned on staying there
for a week; the purpose
for our visit being to
check on Grandma (who'd
been diagnosed with liver
cancer in mid-June, and
had begun chemotherapy
shortly afterwards) and to
be sure Grandpa wasn't
overdoing it, too.
We arrived on July 29,
and as we arrived we
discovered the hospital
had discharged Grandma,
telling Grandpa that,
"(they) weren't doing
anything that couldn't
be done at home." This
is good, right? Well, we
thought so, but in a couple
of days we were told that
the opposite was true;
Hospice began home care
on Aug. 2.
The doctor told us
he'd hoped the chemo
treatments would "buy"
her three to six months,
but her body couldn't
tolerate the lowest dose,
so there was nothing else
to be done.
Her doctor felt that her
rapid deterioration would
bring death within 10
days to two weeks.
Since school wasn't
starting until Aug. 20,
we made the decision to
stay, to spend time with
Grandma, and to help out
at the house. We wanted
to support Grandpa as he
lost his soul mate of 52
years.
By the second week,
things began to slowly go
downhill. Grandma could
no longer use the walker
to get from her bedroom
to the family room, nor
could she help us get her
into and out of bed, plus
she no longer was eating
On Aug. 10, Hospice
delivered a hospital bed;
my dad had to talk 'her
into just "trying it out," as
she didn't want to leave
her bed.
My mom re-arranged
the family room, so the
hospital bed could be
by the window, and so
Grandma could see the
television, then she helped
Grandma make the trip
into the family room a
final time.
Hospice continued to
visit, but the staff told us
they expected her to "let
go" over the weekend,
and we should just call
them.
But Grandma held on;
and everyone was shocked
that she was still with
us on Aug. 13. Although
her vital signs showed
improvement, Grandma
was just "there"; the only
movement she had was
her chest as she breathed
deeply.
Grandpa wasn't
holding up well he felt
guilty if he left her side,
because he didn't want to
miss a minute of spending
time with her.
At the same time, he
found it impossible to see
her in this state and not be
able to do anything.
The priest gave
Grandma last rites and
the family communion on
Monday night, Aug. 13.
Grandma died on Aug. 16
at about 2:20 p.m.
This would lead to other
problems for Grandpa,
my dad, my uncles, and
the whole family.
It was "race weekend,"
as in NASCAR at Michigan
International Speedway
(MIS).
My grandparents live
about 4 miles from MIS
and Brooklyn, the town
where the track is located,
is also where the funeral
home and the church are.
Because the town is so
small in size and the traffic
becomes a nightmare,
the Department of
Transportation makes the
only road a two lane
road one direction into
Brooklyn in the morning,
and then one way out of
Brooklyn once the race
has only 50 laps left!
Add to that, the
Michigan State Police
are brought in to assist
the local police, so we
also couldn't get any
assistance from the police
in getting to and from the
funeral home, church, and
cemetery.
Due to these
circumstances, we held
visitation on Saturday
afternoon, and had a
Rosary service on Sunday
evening, with the funeral
service and burial on
Monday, Aug. 20.
The fact that by the
time NASCAR finally had
a dry day to run the race,
most people had returned
home, made these days a
little easier to get around
town.
Worried about
Grandpa, we tried to get
him through the first
several days, but we had
to head for home.
On Aug. 24, we left for
home, but because it's a
two-day drive, I missed
the entire first week of
school which for me is
a big deal.
I know, this is one of
those things that happen
that you have no control
over, but this bothers me
for some reason maybe
because its my senior year,
I really don't know.
So, now, quite some
time later, I seem to be
finally done catching up
on what I missed, and
am finally getting my
life back on some kind of
schedule.
And I've learned
how to better cope with
"change," as well as those
unavoidable things that
happen in life.
This must be what's
known as growing up, I
guess.
See what you've been missing! New Bulleti

WHAT A GAME IT'S GOING TO BE
I BOX
by Robert Young
After a powerhouse
game on Oct. 1 the
Davidson Panthers are
looking to take back what
they think is rightfully
theirs after a 33-26-heart
stopper.
Richbourg is setting
their sights on taking the
Panthers off the list once
again after they rushed
for 388 yards last game
compared to Davidson's
245 yards.
But when you look at
the charts, Davidson's
biggest loss was the
two fumbles they gave
up during back-to-
back onside kicks from
Richbourg and two more
during the second and
fourth quarters. With a
total of four fumbles, that
is definitely something
that turned the game
around in Richbourg's
favor.
Now these two rivals
are looking to collide
once more in the second
rescheduled make-up
game this season.
Some of the big
players to look for
this game are Andrew
Thomas and William
Jefferies, who both had
more than 100 yards
rushing and accounted
for the majority of the
touchdowns that night.
Davidson's Drew
Gibbons as well as Dillan
Lawson and quarterback
Dakota Dean are all stars
for the Panthers, and
combined they kept the
drive going for a losing
Panthers team with 299
yards total offense.
With only one
interception and a 27-
yard pass to Stephen

Richbourg rushes three yards into scoring position
on Oct. 1 during their first game versus Davidson.
Frye in the final minutes
of the game, there's only
hope for the young new
quarterback to step up
his passing game and
find more of the wide
receivers that Head
Coach Chrisl Small
places out on the field.
And with Richbourg,
the only real way for
Davidson to take away
a second win for the
Roadrunners is to shut
down Andrew Thomas
altogether.
Without Thomas the
Roadrunner rushing
, game would take a hard
hit: With only Jefferies
to back it up, Richbourg
will have to switch up on
a passing game, which
didn't succeed at all with
five incompletions and
no yards thrown.
I'm looking forward
to the second take on this
town rivalry game.
Be there or be square
at 6 p.m. this Tuesday at
Crestview High School.
