"We' raised our kids together, we
were like family and helped each other
through good and bad," the sentiment
was much the same throughout the
room at Ryan's Steakhouse Saturday.
"And we're all gray-headed now,"
added someone at a back table as the
group of women broke into laughter.
The ladies came together to reminisce
and share a meal as they do each year in
October for the annual Alatex Reunion.
They remembered their years
working at the garment factory in
Crestview as good ones.
"I just love these people, they are part
of me, they're my history," explained
Pat Boutwell, who worked at Alatex for
30 years.
Boutwell carpooled with six other
women from DeFuniak Springs when
she began working at the factory in

Lawmen on the lookout for dumpers
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
With bow season open since Oct. 13 and
gun hunting season opening in November,
area sportsmen are getting ready to take
to our bountiful north county woods to
bag themselves a deer or two.
Most are law-abiding, respectful
hunters. But local law enforcement officers
are again anticipating a few "sportsmen"
who can easily give the others a bad
reputation by illegally dumping stripped
deer carcasses in local waterways.
"It's the worst thing a hunter possibly
can do," said Environmental Enforcement
Officer Danny Dean with .the Okaloosa
Sheriff's Office.
"We saw way too much of it last year,"
Dean said. "It's really an educational
problem. We're surprised at the number
of people who say, 'Oh you toss them in
a creek' when you ask them what you
should do with a deer carcass.
"It's not like people are intentionally
trying to do something wrong. They're
just not educated in what they should be
doing," Dean said.
Dean's department and the Florida Fish
and Wildlife .Division recommend that
hunters drag their deer carcasses off into
the woods, "or, even better than that, bury
it some distance away" from areas where
people might encounter it, Dean said.
"Obviously don't want to put it
somewhere where people are going to be
driving by or walking by," Dean advised,
due to the sanitation and health concerns
posed by a rotting carcass.
Best of all, Dean said, is taking full
advantage of the South Karick Lake
Recreation Area's public deer cleaning
facility off of State Road 189 near the
Forestry Division office. "That's the best
way to do it," Dean said.
The facility features hooks on which
to hang the deer as you clean it, bins to
throw innards in, and the Fish and Wildlife
Division has posted diagrams instructing
hunters how to clean deer.
"There's really no excuse for people
to be tossing carcasses on roadsides or in
waterways," Dean said.
And, he emphasized, "absolutely
the worst thing is to put it in creeks and
ponds.
"It's a misconception that people think
alligators and turtles will eat off it," Dean
explained. "What actually happens is, it
takes a certain amount of oxygen to break
something down and decomposes it, so it
depletes a water body of its oxygen.
"You start having anaerobic bacteria
forming. It makes the waterway unsafe for
anyone who wants to use it for recreational
purpose, and depletes the oxygen in water
for plant and fish life," Dean said. The high
organic content of carcasses increases the
microbes in the water, which can "result
in the degradation of water quality," he

ALATEX continued from Al
"We had a good time,
too," added Ruth Shelly,
who still resides in
DeFuniak Springs and
commuted for the entire 30
years she spent at Alatex.
"They came by the
carloads," said Mary Cobb
as she explained how
workers traveled from
rural communities, such
as Baker, Escambia Farms,
Laurel Hill, Dorcas, and
even southern Alabama to
what many considered the
best place a woman could
work.
"Many families in the
area were fed and clothed
from wages earned in the
factory that might have
otherwise been forced to
depend on welfare or other
government assistance,"
said Cobb, who worked for
27 years at the factory.
When the garment
factory opened as the
Smith Johnson Company
in September 1937, it was
the largest payroll and only
manufacturing company in
Okaloosa County.
The Crestview city
government offices
occupied the northeast
corner of the manufacturing
building's ground floor.
"The City Hall building
is not only the largest in
Crestview, but it is one of
the largest single units in
this section of the state.
Crestview has every right
to be proud of it," reported
the Okaloosa Messenger on
July 1, 1937.
While many workers
commuted, other young
women moved to Crestview
where they remained to
raise their families.
After only one year of
operation, factory officials
were calling for additional
workers and appealed to
Crestview businessmen to
build more medium-sized
houses, "the kind that can
be rented for $6 to $8 to $10
per month."
By 1940, local
newspapers reported that
Crestview had entered
a boom era after the
factory was established.
New construction in the
town was conservatively
estimated at $150,000, an
additional 90 blocks of
streets had been paved,
improvements on the water
system and sewer disposal
had been made, and the
number of telephones had
jumped from 35 in 1937 to
150 by 1940.
During World War II
workers did their part for
the war effort by sewing
garments for the Army and
helping to support their
families with the much-
needed wages earned at
the factory.
Alatex took over
operations at the factory
in July, 1943 and remained
operational until 1986.
Ladies who folded
finished garments in the
, laundry earned 37 cents
an hour in 1951 when
Crestview resident, Nita
Hall began working at
Alatex.
Hall, who organized
Saturday's reunion, has
many fond memories of
the 36 years she spent at
the factory.
She recalled that a union
was voted into the factory
in 1968 and a two-day
strike occurred sometime
after that. The strike was in
support of a fellow union
member at a sister plant in
Andalusia, but for reasons
that are lost to time.
Many humorous stories
from the days the women
spent together in the old
sewing factory were shared
during the reunion.
Some of the stories had
names left out for the sake
of good manners, but all.
still resulted in laughter.
Back then, potluck
dinners were a common
occurrence and good cooks
were abundant.
One story was of a
crock-pot placed on a
cutting table from which
the sweet aroma of cooking
meat drifted upstairs as the
dinner hour approached.
Everyone enjoyed
the dish, but one lady in
particular became upset
afterwards, because she
didn't eat goat, but she just
had.
"We look forward to
seeing each other and
sharing time each year, but
these days we sometimes
have to ask, who are you,"
laughed June Busbee of
Crestview.
The two-story building
that housed the Alatex
factory is now the anchor
of Crestview's Historic
District, which was listed
on the National Register
of Historic Places in July,
2006.
Efforts are currently
underway to restore
the 40,000-square-foot
structure owned by the
city, which will be used as
an auditorium, museum,
city archives and offices.
"I think it looks really
nice," stated Polly Nelson,
referring to the exterior
renovation that has already
been completed. "We drive
by and there's just a lot of
memories that come back."
RAFFLE continued from Al
the $23,515 "Red Jewel"
colored car, which comes
loaded with 16-inch
aluminum wheels, power
everything, remote vehicle
start and OnStar navigation
equipment.
"We thought it was
something we could do to
help the military and their
families," said Alan Ward,
owner of the dealership.
"They have been
unbelievably good to us,"
said Trecia Chedister, vice
president of the local Fisher
House board.
Fisher Houses, founded
in 1990, offer an extended
stay facility with a home-
like atmosphere for
American service personnel
and their families while
a family member is in a
base hospital, explained
Chedister.
When the planned
expansion of Eglin's
hospital is completed, it will
be one of the largest military
hospitals in the nation.
"What we've discovered
is when people are able to
come together and share
their burdens and worries,
it lets them know they're
absolutely not alone,"
Chedister explained.
Raffle tickets for the
Impala are $10 each or 10 for
$60, and they're available
at Award Chevrolet,
Crestview City Hall, and
will soon be available at
businesses countywide.
The Fisher House board
will have tents displaying
the car at the Mullet Festival
in Niceville this weekend,
and at the Northwest
Florida Fair. Starting at the
beginning of November,
raffle tickets will be for sale
on weekends at the Eglin
Base Exchange.
The winner will be
drawn on Dec. 21 and the
Impala can be picked up on
Dec. 24. -"Just in time for
Christmas," said Chedister.

Morning wreck
slows traffic
A two-car accident tied up traffic Tuesday
morning at the intersection of U.S. Highway
90 and State Road 85 in Crestview. The wreck,
involving a Dodge Caravan and a Honda Accord,
sent three people to the North Okaloosa Medical
Center with minor injuries.

continued from A1
said.
"There's the argument
that animals die in the
water," Dean noted, "but
it's very infrequent that
a deer is going to stand
in the water and just fall
over and die. When we
contribute to oxygen
depletion, we're just
creating a problem."
While some hunters
innocently dump deer
carcasses in waterways
unaware that they are
creating an environmental
problem, a few do so out
of sheer laziness.
"They'll go over
a bridge in state
management, areas and
just throw their carcass
into the water, or off the
back of a truck by the
road," Dean said.
"All we ask is, if you're
going to toss it, please just
walk the extra 75 yards
into the woods where it
won't be a nuisance. It is
a sanitary nuisance," he
added.
Fortunately, those who
irresponsibly dump their
carcasses in waters, along
roadsides or in urban
areas are a minority.
"The majority of our
hunters are responsible
people with conservation
in mind," Dean said.
"We have a pretty good
hunting population
here."

We deserve better than this
The Miller
SReport
Jeff Miller
Once again I am appalled at
a growing trend of people not
acknowledging the foundation
upon which our great nation
is built. This country's Judeo-
Christian heritage contributed
greatly to a society that enjoys
liberties such as freedom of
speech, the press, and religion,
yet certain individuals claim an
acknowledgment of God, such as
has been found throughout our
country's entire history, want us
to forget that important part of
our past.
I recently joined over 130
members of Congress in a letter to
Speaker Pelosi asking for a review
of the policies of the Architect of
the Capitol (AoC) in regards to
using the word "God" or "Lord"
on flag certificates.
One important service a
member of the House or Senate
can provide constituents is
having a flag flown over the
United States Capitol. This flag
is accompanied by a certificate
stating the date it was flown
and a message for the recipient.
Oftentimes, the flag is flown
in recognition of a birthday, an
anniversary, a wedding, service to
one's country, obtaining an Eagle
Scout badge, or the passing of a
loved one.
I share with many an outrage
that the Architect of the Capitol
unreasonably decided to censor
flag certificates without informing
Members of Congress that he was
doing so.
The phrases requested have .
no effect on the separation from
church and state; however,
the actions of the AoC have a
negative effect on freedom of
speech. People in this country
should be recognized for
important actions such as "service
to God and Country," and they
should be recognized "In the Year
of our Lord" as they request.
These flags are emotionally
"significant to both the people
who give them as well as the .
recipients, and the certificate
that accompanies the flags is of
equal significance. The message
accompanying these flags
underlines the patriotism of both
parties, and it is of the utmost
importance that the certificate
bears this message as it is
requested to read. Several recent
news stories have shed light on
the fact that the Architect of the
Capitol (AoC), the office charged
with administering this service
for constituents, at times chooses
to not print the certificates as
requested, instead making glaring
omissions. Some of these changes
include "service to God," and "In
the Year of our Lord."
In May of 2006, I sent a letter
to the Architect of the Capitol
stating my concerns about their
not printing "In the Year of our
Lord" on flag certificates and
asking for a clarification on the
AoC's guidelines on what they
will and will not print. As I
pointed out in my letter, "In the
Year of our Lord" is not only
included in our very own United
States Constitution, it has been
used for centuries to convey the
level of respect that a document
deserves. The AoC replied that he
did not believe the phrase kept
with a content-neutral policy,
citing disagreement that the
phrase was a strictly religious one
used in a government setting. I
could not disagree more with this
line of reasoning. Like my letter
to the AoC last year, this recent
letter reminded Speaker Pelosi
that references to God have been
used throughout the history of
the United States, including many
places in the capitol itself, the
very building over which these
flags fly.
On Oct. 9, legislation was
introduced which I cosponsor
specifically requiring the Architect
of the Capitol to allow the use
of the word "God" on flag
certificates that are issued at the
request of a Member of the House
or Senate. On Oct. 11, the AoC
issued a statement saying that the
current policy would be reversed.
The statement acknowledged
that the AoC's office provides
service to members of Congress
and that their current policy was
not effectively serving members
or their constituents. My support
still remains for legislation
specifically allowing the usage of
"God" on flag certificates and I
look forward to its passage. Our
nation's history is too important
to have vital aspects of its
foundation arbitrarily ignored
and covered up. The American
people deserve better..
- U.S. Representative Jeff Miller
was sworn in as congressman of
the First District Congressional
District of Florida in 2001. The
people of Northwest Florida
elected him to his fourth term in
2006.
Six statements cops frequently hear
Sgt. Rick Hord
Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office
If you've ever made one of
the following statements to
an officer... or even had these
thoughts enter your mind, you
are not alone. They are some of
the common sentiments cops hear
from non-cops.
"I waited until you got here to
move my car." Many of us learned
long ago if you're in an accident,
don't move your car until the
police arrive. That rule changed at
least 30 years ago. The fact is, you
can get a ticket for leaving your car
in place if it's blocking traffic. The
requirement to move out of the
roadway obviously does not apply
in some serious crashes when it's
not possible or safe to attempt to
move the vehicles, but the vast
majority of crashes do not fall into
that category.
"If I did that, they'd put me
away for 100 years." This is a
common emotional reaction to a
perceived miscarriage of justice,
such as a modest sentence for a
serious crime. A full examination
of the facts, however, would often
reveal a different perspective. The
severity of the allegation prompts
the emotional response. But it is
the evidence and circumstances
unique to that case, not emotion
that guides the outcome of the
matter in court.
"I didn't want to bother you..."
We hear that statement from well-
intentioned citizens who chose
not to report a possible prowler'
or other "minor" incident. We do
take those "minor" calls seriously,
and we won't make fun of you if
the incident turns out to be trivial.
Keep calling, because every once
in a while, that's how burglars,
mailbox-smashers and other
miscreants get caught.
"How can that guy still be
driving?" Law-abiding citizens
wouldn't think of driving illegally,
and may find it baffling that a
significant portion of their fellow
citizens are equipped with brains
that are programmed differently.
That group would never consider
not driving, legal or otherwise.
The courts may put these folks
in prison for repeated driving
violations, but they'll eventually
get out... and when they do,
they'll probably drive again.
"You better behave yourself or
that officer will take you to jail."
We hear that from the parents of
small children. I've never met or
even heard of a cop who doesn't
cringe at that phrase. We want kids
to grow up liking us, not fearing
us. We also want them to know
that they must obey their parents
all the time, not just when a mean
cop is present.
"I wish I had a car like yours.
I'd never be late." The truth is
the other way around. When you
drive a marked patrol car other
drivers do two things: 1) They
drive slow in front of you, and; 2)
They get in your blind spot and
stick like glue. When you drive
a patrol car you stop for fender-
benders and citizens who flag
you down. So you'd just turn
on the blue lights and blow past
everyone? That's a quick way to
the unemployment line.

In memory of my fiance
Lance Haywood
Arnette
December 5, 1932 September 17, 2007
My darlin' Lance, as I held you in my arms the Lord took you home. We were only
engaged a little over 11 months and were to wed on October 27th 2007 in Helen, GA.
In a little German chapel, but God needed you to carry on his work in heaven. You
were needed to sing with the angels. All I wanted was to love you for the rest of my
life...to wake up every morning with you in my arms. Knowing that no matter how
hard my day was, I'd be able to come home to your smile and loving arms. We shared
everything. We talked about our life and plans ahead, our dreams, our trips we planned.
You always had a smile and a joke for me.
All I wanted was to give you my love forever, as a place you could come to for
acceptance or the simple comfort that silence brings when things do not need to be
spoken, but we both understood.
All I wanted was to grow old with you, to watch our life unfold, our dreams come true.
The first time you asked me to dance, the first thing you said to me was that we just fit,
and we did from that night on. We were never apart. All I wanted was to love you
forever my darlin'. God needed you but I know you are watching over me. I feel you
near me every moment of every day. Your memories run through my mind and body
like liquid gold and no one can take this away. I know you are happy serving the Lord
as you always did, but darlin' I miss you and love you; you were my soul mate, my life
long love. I know one day I will join you and it will be Mary and Lance, again we will
still just fit. And Mary Spence loves her country boy.
You are missed and loved by myself and your many many friends! n2e,1

"Fire in the Blood" Irene
Nemirovisky. McN Fic Nem.
The author never published
this novel; she gave pieces
of her work to her daughters
and a very close friend just
before she was sent to her
death at Auschwitz. It is
believed she wrote this novel
sometime between 1938 and
1942.
The story is told by
Silvio, a middle-aged man
living in a small village in
France. Silvio has been
away for many years. He
returns to the village poor,
having squandered all his
inheritance on women and
youthful adventures that he
refers to as the "Fire in the
Blood." He begins the story
with the marriage of his
cousin Colette and follows
her through an affair and the
complications that follow.
Colette's experiences that in
the end involve the whole
family bring back memories
of his youth and the "Fire in
the Blood."
Jean Lewis
Library Director
Dean of Library Services
at the Dacus Library at
Winthrop University, Mark
Y. Herring, created the "10
Reasons Why the Internet is
No Substitute for a Library"
'poster.
I thought this poster was
right on; it dearly states
what we librarians have been
saying for years.
Below are just a few
points that I thought were
especially noteworthy:
"Not everything is on
the Internet. You'd think so
with a billion pages but no.
Most substantive materials
that meet the demands for
quality research are not free.
The needle (Your Search)
in the haystack (the Web).
No matter which search
engine you use, you can
drown in the Web's ocean of
materials trying to find the
right answer.
The Internet: A mile wide,
an inch (or less) deep. Most
of what's on the internet is
only about 15 years old. If
you want more you must
have a full-service library.
The Internet is ubiquitous
but books are portable. Try
curling up by the fire with
a laptop, or stopping by the
woods on a snowy evening
with a handheld. The future
may bring this, but for now
the vast majority of readers
- even online readers still
want books."
Libraries are an essential
part of any community. They
provide life-long learning
opportunities, are a source of
business, medical, state and
government information,
and at the same time provide
a cultural atmosphere, as

NEWTOWN, Pa. I've
done the haunted house thing.
Dude with the chainsaw and
hockey mask. Yawn. Creep
with the rubber Frankenstein
creature mask. Ho-hum.
Blacklight lit fluorescent paint
in black plywood hallways.
Snore.
But then we ventured
into Midnight Productions'
"Payne's Asylum" in Bucks
County, Pa.
Screech!
Imagine the quality of
Disney World's Haunted
Mansion without being safely
tucked in those little bubble
chairs. You walk through this
place, getting up dose and
personal with ghosts, ghoulies
and impressive special effects.
It's awesome. We went
through it three times,
then again after hours with
its creator and Midnight
Productions' co-founder
and artistic director Allen G.
Doak.
"People are scared by our
perception of what something
is," Doak explained. Visitors
already have expectations
that they'll be frightened in a
Halloween haunted house,
"So we frighten them," he
said with a grin.
As kids, Doak and his
brothers produced haunted
houses in their parents'
basement. Reliving his
childhood games, Doak's
production grew so big and
popular that his outfit built
an impressive facility of their
own, set in an already spooky
hollow on Active Acres Farm.
It comes complete with a
genuinely eerie cemetery
through which guests must
pass to leave.
Make it a whole evening
by enjoying the farmer's
haunted hayride, bonfires,
food, hot cider, and weekend
live music.
It's a great way to cap
off a fun-filled day during
your autumn exploration of
Bucks County, the charming,
hospitable and historic region
north of Philadelphia.
Start in New Hope, a pre-
revolutionary village nestled
on the Delaware River, and
a perfect headquarters for
exploring the county.
New Hope's streets are
lined with historic buildings
housing shops, restaurants
and galleries. At the restored
railway station, hop aboard
the vintage train towed by
lovingly restored steam
Engine #40 and explore the
beautiful countryside. Special
ghost train tours are run in the
evening as Halloween nears.
Theater buffs rejoice:
this is the hometown of
the famous Bucks County
Playhouse, where for decades
professional productions
have often included musicals
being audience-tested before
opening on Broadway's
Great White Way. (Oscar
Hammerstein II and Stephen
Sondheim lived nearby.)
Just as Washington did
almost 250 years ago, cross
the Delaware into equally
enjoyable Lambertville, N.J.
But unlike the nation's first
George W. who crossed in a
wobbly boat, you can stroll
easily across the trestle bridge,
pausing to admire the views
of the Delaware.
Lambertville was the 18th-
century halfway stop on the
two-day carriage ride between
New York and Philadelphia. It
mirrors New Hope's historic,
retail and culinary ambience.
Take in the autumn foliage
with a stroll along the well-
maintained path bordering
the Delaware and Raritan
Canal, a major 19h-century
transportation artery.
About 20 minutes by car
from New Hope is handsome
Doylestown, Pa. In its center
looms the Mercer Museum, a
giant concrete castle founded
and designed by eccentric
Henry Mercer.
Rebelling against the
Industrial Revolution, Mercer
feared America's embrace
of technology would make
us lose sight of our heritage.
So he started gathering stuff
(almost 40,000 pieces of it).
To showcase it, he built the
museum castle that bears his
name.
In its rooms, niches,
cubbyholes, warrens and four-
story atrium, Mercer arranged
'his pieces more or less into
trades, crafts, agriculture and
domestic categories. Some of
the bigger artifacts were hung
from the ceiling and remain
suspended there today. As
you walk around, view things
like a New England whaling
boat, a Conestoga wagon and
interesting bits of equipment.
Not far from downtown
is Fonthill, Mercer's unusual
home. Also of concrete, it
resembles an English country
estate. It served as a showcase
for products from his nearby
Moravian Tileworks, with
decorative tiles from its catalog
covering the walls, floors and
ceilings.
In addition to the mansion,
you can also tour the tileworks,
which, like the home and
museum, is operated by the
Bucks County Historical
Society. Watch artisans
produce tiles by traditional
methods, then browse the
shop for examples of their
artistry.
Between Doylestown
and New Hope in Lahaska
is Peddler's Village, a
combination of vintage and
new but aesthetically similar
buildings where an eclectic
assemblage of somewhat
upscale shops, boutiques and
restaurants awaits the avid
shopper.
It includes the Cookery
Ware Shop, the most fabulous
kitchenware store I've ever
been in, and the Town Crier
Bakery, where at last I found
the sticky buns that had
eluded me in Philadelphia.
A trip to Philadelphia
needn't confine you to the
town limits. Include time in
your visit to leave the Liberty
Bell behind and explore
beautiful Bucks County.

Marathon expert inspires
locals to get off the couch
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW He's
run in the 1972 Munich
Olympics and in marathons
all over the country. He's
authored best-selling books
on running, and he's a
columnist for Runner's
World magazine.,
But Jeff Galloway's
message hits home no
matter your fitness level -
or lack of it:
Every hour of exercise
you undertake adds two
hours to your lifespan.
Galloway spoke Monday
evening to an audience
of students, parents and
interested members of the
community at Bob Sikes
Elementary School.
"Wellness is the focal
point of Okaloosa County,"
said Sikes coach Steve
Gohagen in his introductory
remarks, and Galloway's
presentation provided
hope to even the staunchest
couch potato.
"Just walk," he advised
someone starting a fitness
regimen. "Just get out there
and try to get in 1,000 steps.
Once you get to 1,000, shoot
for 2,000."
Setting and achieving
easy-to-reach goals is a big
motivator, Galloway said.
"Exercise doesn't have
to hurt," he assured his
audience. "I am against
puking!"
In addition to the obvious
benefits of a trimmer, lighter
physique, exercise has been
proven to do something
else.
It'll make you smarter.
"Those who engage
in some form of regular
aerobic exercise three days
a week have been shown to
develop more brain cells,"

"Kids who exercise

Starting the day off with

Coldwell
Banker study
compares
affordability
of Emerald
Coast
homes to
international
market
CRESTVIEW The
Coldwell Banker Home
Price Comparison Index
(HPCI) evaluated average
home values for select
2,200-square-foot single
family dwellings with four
bedrooms, two and one-
half baths, a family room
(or equivalent), and a two-
car garage in 394 markets
across the United States,
Puerto Rico, Canada and a
sampling of countries and
territories outside of North
America where Coldwell
Banker has a presence.
The cumulative average
sales price of the homes
surveyed in the 317 U.S.
markets (including one in
Puerto Rico) covered in the
Coldwell Banker HPCI is
$422,343.
Subject homes in
Crestview average $236,300,
making Crestview one
of the more affordable
markets in the nation.
Crestview compares to the
average price of homes in
Louisville, Ky. ($238,000)
and Nashville, Tenn.
($238,333). Crestview is also
similar in price to Aruba
one of 77 markets studied
outside of the U.S., where
a similar 2,200 square foot
home costs $236,250.
"The. real estate market
in' the Emerald Coast has
a great deal to offer," says
Cynthia Schultz, sales
manager for Coldwell
Banker United, formerly
JME Realty. "Our market
has changed considerably
over the last couple years,
bringing with it a much
needed adjustment period."
Schultz says statistics show
that one, out of every 16
people are purchasing
a home and that coastal
properties will always
be in demand. "Our area
will continue to benefit
from the organic growth
the region is experiencing,
such as BRAC realignment,
the International Airport,
and other special interest
acquisitions. With a good
economy and a healthy
adjustment in the market,
homes available today that
are priced right and present
well are selling rather
quickly."
Beverly Hills, Calif.
is, once again, the most
expensive market in the
nation. A single family
home meeting the same
criteria would cost $2.21
million. Yet, more than
1,400 miles away from the
glitz of Rodeo Drive, the
Beverly Wilshire Hotel
and Spago sits Killeen,
Texas, the nation's most
affordable studied market
where a home with similar
characteristics would cost
$136, 725.
eEight of the top 10 most
expensive markets in the
country are located in
California, but Greenwich,
Conn. jumped from the
eighth most expensive
market a year ago to second
this year ($2 million).
Boston ($1.38 million) is the
only other market outside
of California to make the
top 10 most expensive
market list.
Consumers can calculate
what their homes may be
worth in other areas by.

LOOKING AT HOLMES COUNTY
Let's go over the
numbers from what I
thought was a game that
Baker shouldn't be too
hard on themselves about.
I know Baker fans are
thinking to themselves that
the Gators aren't going to
take this season farther
than Nov. 9, but from my
perspective, the Gators'
schedule is a lot tougher
than one would imagine.
\ First off you have Baker
taking on Northview. The
Chiefs were 9-1-0 last year,
and continue their reign
with some hefty veterans
who are ready to go play
college ball right out of
high school. With an almost,
perfect season except for
losing to Chipley back in
November of last year, the
Chiefs are a team everyone
in the district is looking to
take down.
Then we have Walton.
The DeFuniak Springs
team was the same
playing level last year
that Baker is now, but
their rookies have made it
past the hump of minimal
experience and they've
brought it together. Even
in Adam Pruiett's story in
Saturday's Bulletin, Head
Coach Bob Kellogg came
right out and said, "We
,knew they were real, real
good and they were better
than I thought."
Baker ended up rushing
110 yards with 29 carries
as opposed to Walton's
24 carries and 153 yards
rushing.
So, how did Walton
come out ahead by so
much?
Passing.
The Braves were 14 of
22 for 222 yards and two
of the five touchdowns
resulted in purely passing.
Baker passed for only
6 of 14 with 64 yards, and
it seemed that the Walton
Braves caught on to
something.
Cameron Domangue.
Lenny Jankowski
touched on how he knew
Domangue was what
made the team go, so he
simply stepped up the
defense.
That goes way back to a
couple weeks ago to when
I talked about if Cameron
Nick Tomecek
Florida Freedomrn Ne~- -papr
Above: Cameron
Domangue looks down
field during last Friday's
game against Walton.
Right: Walton's
Jed Davidson and Ebae
Young celebrate after
their victory over Baker
last Friday.
Below: Billy Whatmough
started off the Baker of-
fense with his five yard
touchdown last Friday.
Domangue was locked
down, would Baker be
locked down?
I don't think so.
Domangue still had a
good night even though he
rushed for only 66 yards
that night.
A team is a team, one
person, as good as players
can get, only get as far as
his team allows. -
Working together is
the key factor in a game,
whether or not you see a
player run the board for
more than 200 yards a
game.
So, whether or not
Domangue was shut
down, Baker still ran the
ball and passed the ball as
usual.
Now Baker is looking at
taking on Holmes County.
Holmes had a pretty
tough year in 2006 when
they finished 1-9-0 overall.
TheywereO-4-Oathomeand
1-5-0 away.
Not that I'm saying
that they are getting a
free game here, but the
Baker's competition is
now flattening out to make
room for some mending.
Baker still has a lot to go
till the end of the regular
season, as well as the post-
season.
