Local American Indians protest Columbus Day

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW While many local
military, government and banking
employees had Monday as a day off,
not everyone in the Crestview area saw
Columbus Day as something worth
celebrating.
Shortly before 11 a.m., a small group

of local American Indians gathered
peacefully at the intersection of U.S.
Highway 90 and state Road 85 to protest
the Columbus Day holiday.
Though small in number, they
represented. a nationwide protest,
organized by a northeast Maliseet
Indian woman, expected to top 100,000
American Indians.
Their local leader, Bill Hamm, a

Passamaquoddy Indian originally from
Maine, explained their concerns.
"The basis of our protest is that
Columbus never 'discovered' America,"
Hamm said. "When he landed on the
island called Hispaniola, there was a
native population estimated between
1 and 2 million people. Eighteen years

BOB SIKES AIRPORT As the collection
of yellow Scott air packs continued to grow
around his feet, Martin Fowler found it
increasingly hard to contain his glee.
"I'm happy. I'm really happy," said the
firefighting minimum standards coordinator
and lead instructor at Chipola College. "This
is good stuff here. It's going to allow a lot of
people to go through fire school."
New, the equipment, includingbreathing
masks, would have cost the Marianna school
more than $30,000.
Upon the North Okaloosa Fire District's
recent equipment upgrade, it seemed
natural to repay the school, which most of
the district's firefighters had attended.

Fairview Park renamed for Allens
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW Fairview Park on
McClelland Avenue got a new, more
distinguished name at Monday evening's
City Council meeting.
The renaming was made at the request
of Sabu Williams, president of the Okaloosa
County branch'of the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People.
"Both Samuel and Caroline Allen were
S. and are longtime Crestview residents and
servants of the community," said Williams.
He cited their extensive contributions
01toward education and public service.
Caroline Allen has long been recognized
for her service to Crestview schools, and as
the historian who founded the Carver Hill
Museum.
The museum stands in the park that will
soon bear her name.

Crestview gets ready for Homecoming

CRESTVIEW Tearing

of Unk's "Walk It Out," a
group of Crestview High
School sophomores work
feverishly to craft an
8-foot-tall Bulldog football
player.

classmates put the finishing

Homecoming showdown.
(Rest assured: News

"Yeah, they'll beat 'em.")
Throughout the Hub
City, groups of students
have been hunkered down
in borrowed garages and
warehouses.
Their after-school
hours and evenings have
been spent preparing
floats for Friday's CHS
student council-sponsored
Homecoming Parade.
This year's theme is
"Vacation Spots."
While the float
committees sculpt figures
'and set pieces, the members
of the J-omecoming Court,
recently elected by their

peers, preen and primp for
their appearance in Friday
afternoon's downtown
parade.
"I believe it's another
year for poofy dresses,"
laughed teacher Kerry
Disharoon, the student
council's adviser.
Marching units and
floats, including those of
local clubs, businesses and
organizations, will parade
at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
They will head north on
Main Street from Martin
Luther King Avenue and
end at Cedar Avenue.
More than 115 groups have
signed up to parade. "I
hope we'll have enough
room on Main Street,"
Disharoon said.
The king of the
Homecoming Court,
elected by student vote,
will be announced at Friday
morning's 9:12 pep rally.
Senior cheerleader and
football parents will also
be honored, and the Court
will be introduced.
The' school's dance
team and cheerleaders will
perform, and student skits
will be presented.

The Homecoming Dance
will be Saturday from 8 to

Student attendees' dates
must be Crestview students

buy tickets for $8 before
the event, or at the door for
$10.
Producing a successful
Homecoming, with its

Disharoon acknowledged,
"But I've got about 33 kids
who work very hard for
me," she said.

PARK continued from Al

Samuel Allen was the
first black Crestview city
councilman, and shared
his wife's commitment to
education.
In addition to Williams,
two community leaders
urged renaming the park.
"Every time we talk
about the Allens, we talk
about all they did here,"
said George Stakely, vice
president of the Carver
Hill Historical Society,
which was also founded
by the Allens.
Bazine McDonald
lauded the couple.
"Mr. and Mrs. Allen
were very intellectual,"
she said. "They were
educators. Fairview can
be a living monument to
them."
City Councilwoman
Brenda Bush remarked,
"Diligently, (the Allens)
both have been in service
to us all these years."
Making the motion to
rename the park, Bush
said, "It is an honor to do
so."
Councilwoman Lily
Conyers, who represents
the district that includes

Special to the News Bulletin

Fairview Park, seconded
the motion.
With the unanimous
vote of the council, the

new name, Allen Park, was
approved to the applause
'of the packed council
chamber.

NO FD continued from Al

NOFD Chief Ed Cutler.
"We had the chance to
do something nice for him
when we got our assistance
grant to get the new air
packs."
In applying for the grant,
Cutler said, his department
promised to donate the
current tanks to the school.
To be a Florida firefighter,
the state requires, a specific
program of vocational
training.
"It's a 450-hour course,"
Fowler said. "It's a lot of
intense training. There's a
lot of book work that you
have to. do, and there's
also a lot of hands-on skills
that you have to be able to

perform."
Once a student passes
the course at Chipola, or
other accredited institutions
in the state, he or she must
pass a state exam to become
a firefighter.
Martin praised Cutler,
who had been through the
program himself several
years ago, for the donation
of the SBAs (self-contained
breathing apparatus).
"The equipment that's
being donated... allows us to
go into a burning building,"
explained Fowler..
Because the donation
means the school won't have
to purchase the equipment,
"it makes it cheaper for other

people to come through our
program. We try to keep the
cost down."
Fowler said the same
program elsewhere in the
state can cost a trainee
$3,000 to $4,000. The
Chipola tuition is about
$1,000, Fowler said.
The donation, he said,
allows "people who could
not otherwise afford to
go through fire school" to
attend the program.
In addition, the donation
of the 30 SBAs means
Chipola's students will each
have their own individual
air pack. "They won't have
to share with other people,"
Fowler said.

The Spanish invaders,
Hamm said, tried to force
the original inhabitants to
convert to their religion.
Those that didn't were
mercilessly enslaved
or hunted down by the
colonists, he said. Some
were used as targets for
the Spaniards hunting
dogs, he added.
The matter of religion
remains a source of
resentment for many
Indians, Hamm reported.
"To us as traditional Native
Americans, Christianity
was forced on us," he said.
"I don't begrudge anyone
the right to practice their
religion, but I ask the same
respect for mine."
As for a national holiday
celebrating a foreign
invader, "For indigenous

Americans to celebrate
Columbus Day would
be the same as Germans
observing a day dedicated
to Hitler," Hamm said as
another passing car tooted
its horn in support of his
band.
"We're all taught in
school that Christopher
Columbus was this great
explorer," Hamm said. "So
few Americans are taught
the truth about him."
As an example of
overlooked historic
facts, he pointed out that
Columbus was a slave
trader.
Hamm's group,
members of the Kunfuskee
Indian Ceremonial
Grounds of Northwest
Florida, included his son,
as well as participants
proudly holding Cherokee,
Creek, Seminole and

Choctaw heritage.
"We're an inter-tribal
organization," Hamm
explained the independent
community not affiliated
with the federal Bureau of
Indian Affairs.
"Un fortunate 1 y,"
Hamm said, "there are
not that many Indians that
dare to get involved with
Indian rights," as they fear
jeopardizing their position
under the B.I.A.
"Our main goal,"
Hamm explained quietly
but with insistence, "is
to have Columbus Day
abolished and replaced by
an indigenous American
day observance."
As several more
passing cars honked and
a semi blared its air horn,
Hamm's message seemed
to be slowly reaching local
ears.

Congressman Keller and the National Youth Presidential Forum

rl About

S 0Congress

I Lou Frey

On Oct. 2, Congressman Ric
Keller praised the National
Youth Presidential Forum, to
be held on Nov. 14, 2007, at The
Lou Frey Institute of Politics and
Government at the University of
Central Florida, in collaboration
with EWN Foundation. The
Congressman said:
"Mr. Speaker, what are
the most important issues
facing today's high school and
college students? Being able
to afford college? Access to
healthcare? The Iraq war? Who,
are their favorite Democratic

candidates? Obama? Clinton?
Edwards? Who are their
favorite Republican candidates?
Giuliani? McCain? Romney?
"Well, thanks to the first ever
National Youth Presidential
Forum on November 14, up to
10 million young people will
have the opportunity to hear
from the presidential candidates
from both parties and then cast
their votes.
"As the congressman from
Central Florida, I'm very proud
that the Lou Frey Institute of
Politics and Government at The
University of Central Florida
is playing a key role in putting
together this unprecedented
event.
"They've joined together
with the EWN Foundation, the
Presidential Classroom, and the
United States Association of
Former Members of Congress

to sponsor a three-hour forum
online, which brings together
presidential candidates and
America's young people for the
first time in a unique webcast.
"This is how it will work.
Presidential classroom scholars
will create questions, which
will be sent to the presidential
candidates, who can respond via
videotape prior to the event or
live the day of the event. Then,
thanks to the event sponsors, the
webcast will be provided free
to each of the participating high
schools and colleges across the
United States.
. "All of the students will then
be able to vote for up to 36 hours
after hearing from each of the
candidates on the issues most
important to them.
"I encourage my colleagues to
go to www.rocktheweb.org for
more information on this great

project.
"It provides a valuable
civics lesson for our students,
and important feedback to our
presidential candidates on the
key issues facing America's
young people. I would
encourage all of the presidential
candidates, high schools,
and colleges to participate in
'this worthwhile educational
opportunity.
"Mr. Speaker, I yield back the
balance of my time."
Let me emphasize that
this is a forum, not a debate.
Questions are being prepared
by graduates of the Presidential
Classroom and furnished to
the candidates ahead of time.
The candidates will be asked to
invest 20 minutes of their time
in answering the questions they
have been furnished. After the
forum closes there will be 36

hours to vote. All high school
and college students can vote
regardless of their age.
However, the results will be
broken out by those of voting
age and those under voting age.
I was one of the sponsors of
the 18-year-old vote in the early,
70s. I have watched with dismay
as the participation of young
people continues to go down.
Getting young people involved
in the process is an investment
in the future of this country. If
we don't understand what we
have been given and we don't
participate, our future is not
bright.

Lou Frey Jr. is a former member
of Congress (FL 1969-79), past
president of the Former Members
of Congress, and a partner in
Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor
and Reed, P.A., Orlando, Fla.

Water conservation urged

Staff Reports

In spite of several inches
of rain, Okaloosa County
is experiencing a moderate
drought and all residents are
encouraged to exercise water
conservation.
No water supply short-
ages have been reported to
the Northwest Florida Water
Management District; how-
ever, they are still urging all of
Northwest Florida to reduce
its water use by following
these voluntary guidelines:
Limit landscape irriga-
tion to no more than two days
per week, during low evapo-
ration hours of 4 until 10 p.m.
Golf courses are en-
couraged to limit hours of ir-
rigation.
Water-based recreation

should be reduced if it re-
quires pumping, diverting or
otherwise using natural water
supply for recreation, to in-
clude filling duck ponds.
Decorative fountains
which use water should be
discontinued at this time.
Okaloosa County Water &
Sewer Department actively
promotes the practice of water
conservation year-around.
"I cannot stress enough
how important it is that each
and every person in Okaloosa
County take all reasonable
steps to conserve our precious
water resources," says Jeff
Littrell, director, Water and
Sewer Department.
For additional information
on how to conserve water

Pensacola has a long track
record with working on state
and federal projects, and
can now add the Crestview
National Guard Armory to
their impressive resume.
"Some of the change
orders were significant, while
some were mostly minor
revisions or additions. And
to give you. an example, the
parking lot elevation had to
be changed to accommodate
rain run-off," stated
said on-site construction
superintendent Cecil Moore,
a Crestview Native.
The changes have upped
the original $1.8 million
contract to nearly $3,000,000.
The Armory doesn't
look significantly different
from the outside, beyond
the additional maintenance
building and a paved
parking lot. However, indoor

changes are easily noticed.
There is a large, state-of-
the art kitchen that would
be ideal to host large parties
and gatherings.
"For some reason people
got the idea that since 9/11
we have closed the armory
for private parties and
corporate functions. We
haven't," Holland stated
emphatically.
"Other than scheduled
drills, or other national or
state emergencies, the armory
will be available to host
large parties or gatherings,"
Holland said.
And once the furniture
arrives and offices are set
up, business will be back to
usual.
And with Christmas
bearing down on Crestview,
Holland expects his phone to
start ringing.

Did you know that we are
in the middle of "Hispanic
Heritage Month?"
We have a display table
of items in the Crestview
Library celebrating our
Hispanic population.
Unlike other month-long
celebration themes, the
Hispanic Heritage Month
began on Sept. 15 and ends
on October 15.
This 30-day period is in
recognition of contributions
madebyHispanicAmericans
to the United States and to
celebrate Hispanic heritage
and culture.
The observation began in
1968 as Hispanic Heritage
Week and was expanded
and enacted into law in 1988
to cover a 30-day period.
Sept. 15 was chosen
because it is the anniversary
of independence for five
Latin American countries:
Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, and
Nicaragua.
In addition, indepen-
dence was declared for
Mexico on Sept. 16 and for
Chile on Sept. 18.
These events encouraged

"Kids explore America's
Hispanic Heritage" written
by kids from the Westridge
Young Writers Workshop.
The book presents
writings by students in
grades three to seven on
topics of Hispanic culture,
including dance, cooking,
games, history, art, songs,
and role models. Filled with
photos, maps and drawings
from the youngsters
who wrote this book, I
recommend it for those who
want a deep understanding
of the Hispanic culture.
And just like those of us
who have immigrated
generations ago, this group
enriches and dignifies our
culture as we continue to
meld into that melting pot
for which we Americans are
known. J 973.04 Kid

"A Book: the outspoken
memoirs of Ricky Ricardo
- the man who loved
Lucy" is an autobiography
by Desi Arnaz. One of
the first Hispanic men to
successfully break into
comedy television, he tells
it all. As he describes on
the inside cover he includes
everything; the good, the
bad, and the ugly. He tells
of his humble beginnings
in Cuba and how his family
lost everything in the
revolution.
When they arrived
as exiles in Miami they
had nothing to lose so he
perfected many trades,
anything that would get
them ahead. Never, as he
writes, did he think he
would get the lucky breaks
he did that took him so far.
I highly recommend this
book as one of survival.
The Cuban influence
on our American culture
by such a man as this is a
wonderful story and an
inspiration of hope for the
Hispanic youth of today. B

Crestview stops Indians Dusting off a hard loss

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin

Did anyone see what
I saw on Friday night?
Because from what I
saw, Head Coach Matt
Brunson and the Bulldogs
fought back and forth
against a strong offensive
Choctaw team.
The outcome?
Bulldogs 34 Indians
28.
Let's talk about the
-numbers that were
produced by the red and
black.
D.D. Johnson had
a huge game, rushing
for 164 yards with two
touchdowns. Jason
Parker, coming out of the
woodshop smooth and
sanded, passed for 10-of-
11 for 163 yards.
It seemed Crestview
really came out blazing
the first half against a
weary Choctaw team.
Even Coach Moore of
the Indians \stated that
was their worst first half
of the season and the

0-;1

Bulldogs definitely took
advantage of it.
Crestview (3-1) (1-0)
came up with 389 yards
in total offense, but even
Choctaw's 399-yard
total offense still wasn't
enough to hold off a team
that wanted the win more;
especially after a steam
-roll loss
against the
Eagles back
in September.
Want to th
know who
I heard on
the sidelines F
during the byR
second half?
Brett Moore.
"It comes down to who
wants this more. We have
to want it more. We have
to want it more," Moore
said.
"We're going to take
this game."
The second half was
the most exciting second
half in high school
football that I've seen in a

Baker went home on
Friday with a loss against
powerhouse Northview,
34-6.
But don't let the score
fool you. By what the
numbers read, the game
was closer
then you'd
think.
The Chiefs
were what
Cess Head Coach
SBob Kellogg
O X made known
rt Young to be THE
program to
beat. It was only a matter
of time until the Gators
took on Northview to see
where they stood in the
district standings.
But even after
Cameron Domangue
rushed for 138 yards with
a touchdown and Billy
Whatmough rushed for
63 with a long 22-yard
dash, it wasn't enough
against a double- threat
team, such as the Chiefs.

Baker had 214
yards in total offense
and Domangue threw
2-for-7 with 23 yards,
but came up with two
interceptions.
Compared to
Northview's total 261
yards in offense, Baker
looked to be right
behind.
Now Baker is setting
their sights on the Braves
from Walton this Friday
at 7 p.m. at Baker.
After the numbers
from Northview's game
and grabbing a win from
South Walton two weeks
ago, the Gators rushing
was only 14 yards short
of South Walton's game.
The loss in yards was
mostly in Baker's passing
game, which was 58
yards less.
Baker did their
best, it seems, against
Northview. Even though
the scoreboard read 34-6,
the game was very close
in rushing and passing/

very long time. And the
victorious should feel
very pleased about the
game.
It was a fight to the
finish. Even to the last
second, Choctaw and
Crestview were clawing
for possession.
Jace Blanchard had
302 yards passing.
Those numbers should
automatically give

you the thought that
Choctaw just drove right
over Crestview. But the
Bulldogs' defense held
them at every yard and
that's what I think won
the game.

are looking at Mosley
