An intermittent sun glinted off the

by Richbourg Middle School Student

school officials and local government

Richbourg students, some of whom
will get .to attend the new school before
graduating to Crestview High, voted on
the school's mustang mascot.
Know ing that Richbourg Principal,
Bob Jones, who will head the new'school,
is a pilot, the Crestview High band
director Jody Dunn jokingly asked, "Is
that going to be a horse or that airplane,
the fighter?" said Jones. "I said, well, I
think everybody would prefer the horse
except me, but I'll probably have a model
of one of those planes in my office."

Parents, students,
educators and law
enforcement officers
became startlingly aware of
what it might feel like for a
gunman to be on campus
with Crestview's children
Wednesday.
Shortly before Richbourg
Middle School was in
session and just after the
Northwood Elementary
School bell had rung,
both schools were placed
on lockdown after word
spread of the possibility of
guns on campus.
Two fourth-grade girls
overheard boys talking
about going back to get
"guns" they had found on
the way to school and a bus
driver saw the boys with
the "guns" earlier in the
morning.
The "guns" were
plastic, toy guns and were
never actually brought on
campus.
Law enforcement officers
responded to the schools
and checked the area before
students were allowed back
inside.
Dr. Alexis Tibbetts,
Okaloosa County Schools
superintendent, said
she was proud of how
administrators, faculty and
law enforcement responded
to what could have been a
very real danger.

He started the collection

remained something of
a secret asset, visited by

So far, McMahon
estimates, he has guided
nearly 10,000 students

"I wanted to have

FROM THE
PULPIT Grace and mercy
Michael Green Jr.
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ
by the commandment of God our
Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ,
which is our hope; Unto Timothy,
my own son in the faith: Grace,
mercy, and peace, from God our
Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 1 Timothy 1:1-2
In his New Testament
epistles the Apostle Paul
usually offered a greeting
of grace and peace to the
churches. When he wrote to
the young ministers Timothy
and Titus, h'e added the word
mercy to the aforementioned
greeting. No one could have
had a clearer understanding
of the burden of the ministry
than the apostle Paul. Thus,
from his unique perspective,
he knew how great the need
was for God's mercy, and he
prayed for a special measure of
that mercy to be shown to his
fellow laborers. Ministers of
today definitely stand in need
of both the grace and mercy of
God as they go forth feeding
and ministering to the flock of
God.
Is there a difference between
grace and mercy? Webster's
Dictionary defines grace as the
free, unmerited love and favor
of God, the spring and source
of all the benefits men receive
from Him. Mercy is similarly
defined as a benevolence,
mildness or tenderness of heart
which disposes a person to
overlook injuries, or to treat
an offender better than he
deserves. When we explore
the two 'in Biblical context, we
observe there is a difference
between the two, even though
it seems slight. Biblically
speaking, we notice that grace
is the goodness that God
exercises towards His elect
children. Mercy, on the other
hand, is extended upon the
whole world.
Let's observe some Biblical
passages involving grace.
In Romans 11, Paul makes
it abundantly clear that
grace and works do not mix.
In reference to his Jewish
brethren, Paul mentions that
God has reserved a remnant
among them according to His
grace. Then he distinguishes
grace from works in verse 6.
"And if by grace, then is it
no more of works: otherwise
grace is no more grace. But
if it be of works, then is it no
more grace: otherwise work is
no more work." Note that this
is referring to those that are
children of God.
Grace is similarly used in
Ephesians 2. The apostle writes
in verses 8-9, "For by grace are
ye saved through faith; and
that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God: Not of works, lest
any man should boast." As
God's elect, we enjoy eternal
salvation because of God's
grace. This is not an attribute
that God exercises towards
the whole world. Rather,
He manifests it upon His
children according to His good
pleasure.
On the other hand, the
Bible provides examples of
God extending mercy upon
all of mankind. The psalmist
David writes in Psalms 136:1,
"0 give thanks unto the Lord:
for he is good, for his mercy
endureth forever." His mercy
is enduring, plenteous, and
abundant. The Bible records in
Psalms 145:9 that "His tender
mercies are over all his works."
While grace is reserved for His
children, mercy is bestowed
upon the whole world. Have
you ever thought about the
air that we breathe? This is by
the mercy of God! Acts 17:25
records that, "He giveth to all
life, and breath, and all things."
If God decided to close the "air
vents" in this world, we would
all be doomed. In Matthew
5, Jesus remarked that God
makes the sun shine on both
the good and evil, and sends ,
rain on the just and unjust. In
these verses we observe the
temporal mercy of God.
As Christians we should
be thankful for both the grace
and mercy of our Heavenly
father. As His children, we
enjoy salvation by His grace.
He ministers to us through the
Holy Spirit on a daily basis.
Through His mercy we receive
the daily necessities of life. We
often take for granted the food
we eat and the air we breathe,
but all is owed to the mercy
of our God in Heaven. We
deserve neither grace or mercy,
but thanks be to God Almighty
who provides both.
It is my prayer that we
would be a thankful people
and always be aware of the
Giver of good things. May we
be like David and exclaim,
"Blessed be the Lord, who
daily loadeth us with benefits,
even the God of our salvation
(Psalms 68:19)."

CRESTVIEW The
bright lights, music, aroma
of funnel cakes, and peals
of laughter have returned
to Spanish Trail Park.
It's Octoberfest in
Crestview, the annual fall
fund-raiser for Crestview
High School. While it
doesn't have Munich's
free-flowing suds and oom-
pah beat, the fun is just as
lively.
"We're having carnival
rides, food, and arts
and crafts," said Gene
Boylan, one of the event's
organizers. "We've even
got a mechanical bull this
year," he added. Larkin's
Express will provide free
entertainment Friday and
Saturday night.
The event, which
opened Thursday evening,
runs through Sunday, with
rides cranking up at 1 p.m.
Arts and crafts sales begin
at 7 a.m. Octoberfest closes
at 10 p.m. each night.
Admission is free.
Starting at 8 a.m. today,
school bus drivers will
hold a bake sale and yard
sale on the park grounds
beginning at 8 a.m. to raise
money for fellow driver
Tina Krug's son, Gary
Morrison, and his family.
The young man, who had
recently married, was
partially paralyzed in an
industrial accident earlier
this summer.
For several weeks the
drivers have been accepting
contributions for the yard
sale at the transportation
office behind Richbourg
Middle School.

about helping out" their
fellow driver's son and his
young family.
"Believe me, we cleaned
out our garages," chuckled
route coordinator Marge
Sumblin.
Also on Saturday
morning there will be a
yard sale at the high school
on the front lawn to raise
money for the Big Red
Machine's upcoming trip
to Hawaii.
Parents will be offering

other yard sale favorites.

On Sept. 21st, 10 civic-
minded Laurel Hill students
participated in United Way
Day of Caring activities.
After adopting the Laurel
Hill gazebo/garden area,
these kids worked up an
action plan for needed
improvements: paint the
gazebo and trim, weed and
plant flowers in the garden.
They attended council
meetings to secure
permission to paint the
gazebo and money to help
with the projects. Then,
with suggestions from the
council meeting in mind,
they went to Lowe's to pick
out the perfect color for
the gazebo. These students
spent the morning of the
21st painting the gazebo and
the rest of the day (through
the rain showers) weeding,
hoeing, raking, trimming,
and shoveling the garden
to prepare a beautiful space
to plant pansies and mums.
This group worked very
hard and we are so proud
of their efforts. (Reported by

I.D.'d
A 35-year-old man
from Covington, Ga. was
arrested in Crestview
for resisting an officer
without violence and
obstruction. During a
traffic stop in town he gave
a false name and birthday
to the police officer.
However, while checking
his I.D., the officer found
a Social Security card that
provided 'the motorist's
correct name. A Georgia
Department of Corrections
inmate release card
clinched his correct birth
date. Hmmm...maybe
he's played that game
before.
I.D.'d again
Doing something dumb
is inevitably the criminal's
downfall. In the recent
case of a 32-year-old Baker
woman, it was because she
parked the wrong way on
Main Street when using a
restaurant payphone. Not
having any I.D. on her,
she gave the police officer
a false name.
A check of the patrol
car computer produced
two photos, including
the defendant's, who still
insisted she was the other
lady until shown the
photos. But she had a good
excuse for not wanting
to give her real name:
there was an outstanding
warrant for her arrest
from the Okaloosa County
Sheriff's Office.
Drunk 'n disorderly
A 37-year-old Fort
Walton Beach man was
already in trouble for
harassing customers and
the clerk at a convenience
store on South Ferdon
Boulevard. Then he was
subsequently found drunk
and getting drunker in
the intersection of South
Ferdon and 1-10. He was
hauled in and charged
with disorderly conduct.
Young 'n dumb
A Crestview dude was
swilling beer in his pick-
up while subtly parked in
the Winn-Dixie parking
lot, attracting the attention
of a Crestview Police
officer. When the police
officer smelled alcohol,
saw a can of beer in the
truck bed and another can
where the guy was sitting,
he asked the guy his age.
When the dude's
I.D. concurred with his
stated age of 19, he was
detained. A search of the
cooler within his reach
in the truck cab revealed
26 more cans of beer.
Fortunately for other
motorists, he was arrested
for underage possession
of alcohol.

Devaney combined for 40
of 68 yards on Choctaw's
first touchdown drive of
the third quarter.
Devaney finished
the drive with a 35-yard
scoring reception.
The Bulldog defense
stiffened on the ensuing
Choctaw possession,
but Crestview muffed
a punt and Seth walker
recovered for the Indians
on the Bulldog 37.
Three plays later
Blanchard hit Jamieson
withal15-yardtouchdown
pass to tie things up.
But the night belonged
to the Bulldogs.
Crestview went 59
yards on its next drive
to score the winning
touchdown.
The Bulldog drive
seemed to be in danger
of stalling when Chase
Boutwell threw Parker
for an 8-yard loss. But on
the next play the Indians
were called for holding
and that was the break
they needed.
Johnson did most of
the work the rest of the
way gaining 45 yards on
the drive, and Peacock
went in from two yards
out to give with 7:13 left
in the fourth quarter and
Crestview held on four
the win.
"We've been working
hard for the last two
weeks on our passing
game," Parker, who
finished 10-of-ll passing
for 163 yards said. "The
two weeks off did us
good and we came
together tonight.
Blanchard finished
the night with 302 yards
in passing, but it wasn't
enough.
"We didn't play great
in the first half," Choctaw
coach Bobby Moore said.
"It was our worst half of
the year.
"I'm proud of the way
our kids came back, but
we have to get better. We
have to make stops on
defense and move the

CRESTVIEW- Forget the
rust, a new look Crestview
Bulldog team returned
to the field after a three-
week layoff in impressive
offensive fashion Friday
night.
Led by sophomore
runningbackD.D.Johnson's
164 yards rushing and two
touchdowns, the Bulldogs
upended Choctawhatchee
in the District 2-4A opener
at Jack Foster Stadium.
Crestview (3-1,1-0) rolled
up 389 yards in total offense.
And the Bulldogs needed
every one of them as the
Tribe's offense was equally
impressive finishing with
399.yards on the night.
"It feels really great,"
Johnson said. "We came
together as a team and
helped each other out."
And how they helped
each other out.
The Bulldog offense took
control of the game on the
first drive of the night and
never let up.
About the only thing
Crestview didn't do in the
first half was punt.
The Bulldogs had the ball
three times. And each time
they marched to paydirt.
Crestview caught an
early break when the
first Indian drive came to
an abrupt end on a Sean
Jamieson fumble that was
recovered by Mitch Kertis
of the Bulldogs.
On a bang-bang play,
Jamieson was ruled to have,
caught the ball before taking
a big hit from a Bulldog
defender.
Crestview set up shop
on the Bulldog 25.
Johnson started the
drive with a 3-yard run and
finished the 9-play march
with a 6-yard scoring
scamper to put Crestview
in front with 5:18 left in the
first quarter.
Another long drive
covering 71 yards on 10
plays ended as quarterback
Jason Parker connected
with Jordan Glover on a 19-
yard scoring pass with 11:51
left in the half.
The second-quarter
fireworks were just getting
started.
Choctaw (2-3, 0-1)
answered with a 13-play,
70-yard drive that ended
with Jace Blanchard hitting
Thomas Darden for a 3-yard
TD pass.
Both teams would
score again before the
intermission with Johnson
picking up his second
touchdown of the night
from two yards out to cap a
6-play 61-yard drive.
The Indians were again
up to the task as they went
80 yards on 15 plays to pull
to within six points.
LeKendrick Ingram did
the honors from a yard out
with 42 seconds left in the
half.
Crestview stretched the
lead back to 28-14 in the
opening moments of the
third quarter when Parker
hit Jonathan Peacock with
a beautiful 18-yard pass
in the comer of the end
zone. Peacock made a great
catch going high over the
defender to make the grab,'
The-" Indians came
roaring back with a pair of
touchdowns to tie things at
28-28.
The pass and catch duo
of Blanchard to Austin
