A lone man walked in to the Tropical
Palm Restaurant Tuesday morning,
uttered a quiet laugh, then turned
around and high-tailed it out the door.
The sight of women in purple pajamas
was too much for him.
The ladies simply giggled like
schoolgirls in response.

..- -- "We tried to get him to come in, but he
wouldn't," said Suzie "Q-ute" Shyron.
"We're just having fun."
Nine ladies sporting' red bonnets,
two in pink (members under 50) and
two young girls had a breakfast feast in
the comfort of their bedclothes all in
the name of sisterly bonding.
The wo;nen are part of the
"Sophisticated Ladies of Crestview," a,
Red Hat Society chapter.

"It's one of our traditions," said
Loetta Barrow, who is lauded as the
"Queen Mother" of the chapter.
"You know when you get old, people
don't pay that much attention to you.
So when you go out dressed in purple
pajamas and a red hat, people tend to
look."

Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW Florida Secretary of
State Kurt S. Browning has announced
that the Main Street Crestview Association
has been designated the Florida Main Street
Community of the Month for October 2007.
According to the Department of State,
communities are selected based on their
participation in the Florida Main Street
Program.
Main Street Crestview was designated
a Florida Main Street Community in 1997.
Last summer the downtown area was also
designated a Commercial Historic District
by the federal Department of the Interior's
National Register of Historic Places.
"It is gratifying to see statewide
recognition from the secretary of state's
office for the efforts that have taken place
during the past 10 years as the citizens
of Crestview have worked diligently to
preserve the historic character of our
downtown area," said Mayor David
Cadle.
"The recent installation of brick
pavers on Main Street is an indication of
the city's commitment to the continued
beautification of Main Street," the mayor
added.
"Main Street Crestview has been very
successful at celebrating and promoting
the heritage of their city," Broivning said.
"Heritage, tourism and historic
preservation are increasingly important
sources of economic impact in our state,
and Crestview is an impressive example
of how growing cities can use their
historical resources to attract visitors and
new businesses," Browning said.

Growth Management Director Elliot Kampert to those attending Tuesday's
Board of Commissioners meeting.

CRESTVIEW Okaloosa County's
new director of the Growth Management
Department was introduced to the Board
of Commissioners at Tuesday morning's
meeting.
Shortly after meeting the commissioners,
Elliot Kampert's appointment to the $97,500-
a-year position was unanimously approved
by the four commissioners present. North
Okaloosa County Commissioner Sherry
Campbell was absent from Tuesday's
meeting.
Kampert will help guide county policy as
the region continues to experience growth,
particularly in the north end. Knowing
how busy Kampert will be, Commissioner
James Campbell, who had led the meeting's
opening prayer, joked, "Maybe I should've
included you in the prayer."

Connecting People to Brands"

Baker rezoning
approved
In other business, ;;the
Board of Commissioners"
unanimously approved,
after discussion, a requested
amendment to the county's
comprehensive Future Land'
Use Map to rezone an 8.4-
acre property in Baker off
State Road 189 near Vincenf
Ray Road.
The board approved
changing the zoning
from AG agricultural to
RR residential, or more
restrictive zoning, as
neighboring developments
are already residential
areas.
During public discussion
in the quasi-judicial hearing,
neighboring, farmer
David Price questioned
the practice of allowing
agricultural properties to
be rezoned residential.
Price stated that he and
other farmers are already
subject to complaints
from neighbors in new
developments and are
threatened with legal action
when they perform standard
farming practices, such as
spraying insecticides to
protect their crops from
pests.

Laurel Hill acquires
road
A request by Laurel Hill
Mayor James Dunn to the
commissioners to transfer
ownership of Thomas,

Road to the city of Laurel
Hill generated spirited
discussion.
S-Thomas Road resident
Virginia Gaskin, speaking
on behalf of herself and her
husband William, stated that
his grandfather had granted
approximately three acres
of land to the county many
years ago as a right-of-way
to .have the road paved.
Gaskin lamented that they
have been paying taxes on
the land but it has yet to be
paved.
Now that the developers
of Harmony Village are
planning for the subdivision
north of Laurel Hill, city
manager Tim Bolduc said
this is a good opportunity
to both realize the Gaskins'
wish to see their road paved
and for the city to address
concerns that an anticipated
increase in traffic can pose a
hazard at the intersection
of Thomas Road and State
Road 85.
"With the additional
traffic it could potentially
be a very dangerous
intersection," Bolduc said.
"It was our intention to get
the road paved and this
was the best way to do it.
We can sympathize with
Ms. Gaskin's problem."
With the commissioners'
unanimous approval of
the request, the Gaskins'
property is on the first
stretch of road that will be
paved. Paving, however, is
not scheduled to begin for

Road vacation
denied
Farmers Andrew Price
and his neighbor Dale
Gibson were denied their
request for the county to
vacate the portion of Gibson
Road in Baker that goes
through their properties.
Price cited litter, vandalism,
burglaries, discharge of
firearms and similar quality
of life issues. Little traffic
uses the road, Price told
commissioners.
Commissioner Bill
Roberts, who represents
Baker and District 3,
sympathized with the
residents, but said, "It's
hard for me to vacate the
road." The decision to deny
the request was approved
3-1, with Commissioner
John Jannazo voting "no."

Other matters
The commissioners voted
to table, until their Oct.
16 meeting, consideration
of an ordinance changing
the Land Development
Code, Chapter 9, "Noise
Control."
By unanimous vote,
the board also approved
a request to vacate a 40-
foot unopened right-of-
way east of Tract 13 in the
Auburn area. At Jannazo's
suggestion, approval was
given with stipulations
attached.

Civic Leadership Academy, Part IV

About

S0Congress

Lou Frey

The follow-ing is another
report from the projects of the
students who attended the Frey
Civic Leadership Academy this
summer.
Please understand that these
are not my ideas, but those of the
students, and no wording in the
report has been changed. I was
impressed as I hope you will be
with the work and depth of the
thinking
that went into these reports.
"Today, too many people lack a
true understanding of what effect the
media has on them. They believe that
they understand the role the media
plays and the effect it has on their
way of life, their way of thinking,
and even the manner in which they

vote. But this is far from the truth.
The masses are moderately unaware
about this subject, putting them
in a position where they are easily
influenced by those who misuse the
power of the media.
Fewer issues that affect our lives
are getting the coverage that they
deserve and therefore we are less
informed about subjects that affect
our jobs, income, children, parents
and more.
By increasing our knowledge
of what is going on in our
communities, our state, our country,
and in our world we can improve
our quality of life. It is clear that the
problem is already here, 64 percent
of people believe quality of life is
declining. Where do we begin to
improve our quality of life? We can
first start with an education reform
in our public schools that creates
effective and efficient ways to become
informed of what is going on in our
community.
We have to cultivate a new
learning environment for our future

generation, and educate them on this
area of importance. Therefore, we
propose starting in our education
system. This would be the ideal
place in order to create a change in
our society because this is the place
of our future generations.
Currently in The Florida
Department of Education Sunshine
State Standards, mass media is
categorized as a language art
elective. Included in this education
reform is the proposal to incorporate
the mass media elective offered in
the Sunshine State Standards into
currently required English I course
offered in 9th grade. By doing this,
students will be able to learn about
media earlier, whereas before, they
had to wait until 12th grade or take
an elective class which in most cases,
students were not even aware of.
Benefits of this reform include
more knowledgeable individuals,
increase in interest in community
involvement, and the desire to
analyze information and come up
with a probable solution or new

outcome. This will have a long term
effect in
our society. By making the people
more interested in news that effect
their lives, we can help them have a
larger impact upon society, whether
it is by increasing voter turn out
or acquiring a larger donation to
a charity. People will be able to
express their opinion in a manner
that can be heard and consequently
improving all of our lives in the
process.
Essentially, this reform will
create awareness, interest, and the
knowledge needed to find answers
and resolutions without adding to
the school's budget. Since this is
already an elective class in some
schools and a required part of
government class, there will be no
need to get new books or materials,
which makes it easier to incorporate
into classes, especially in schools
with small expending accounts
whom might be driven away since
they can only stretch their budget
so far.

This reform effect is not going
to have an immediate effect upon
people's lives; however, it is a good
step toward a more conscious
America. By proposing a small yet
effective reform, we can successfully
change the way people perceive and
understand the information that
is upon them. People do not know
that many of the decisions are being
influenced by things they thought
of as safe, when in reality, they are
only there to influence their decisions
in order to profit entities that are
looking only after themselves. In
safe guarding against the media
manipulating the masses, we can
insure that the endurance of the
republic will be protected, after all
an informed society is an enhanced
society."

Congress (FL 1969-79), is Past
President of the Former Members
of Congress, and a partner in

Hoboes get festive on Saturday

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin

LAUREL HILL The Hobo
Festival, one of the city's most eagerly
anticipated events, unfolds Saturday
in Laurel Hill's Gene Clary Park.
Hobo Festival, Inc., chairwoman
Wilma Jones said this year's event
will boast entertainment, music and
about 40 vendor booths.
"We'll have good music all day,"
Jones said. "We're going to have a
drawing for Sorrelli jewelry and a
shotgun." Tickets for the drawings are
$2 each or 3 for $5.

Performers will include local
country singer Jim Hubbard and
the River Chase Band from Florala.
CrestviewArea Chamber of Commerce
Executive Director Wayne Harris will
be the master of ceremonies.
Jones said vendors will be offering
"a little bit of everything. We have
people selling barbecue, peanuts
and things like that. We'll have most
anything. You name it and we've got
it."
One local vendor will be selling
homemade sausage, she added.
"We're just going to have a good
time," Jones said. "One lady asked me,

'What ages go?' and I said, 'anybody.'
We're going to have plenty of booths
and plenty to eat."

Admission is free to the Hobo
Festival, which has been held annually
for "around 15 years," according to
Jones. Money raised by the event goes
to "help people," Jones said. "We're a
non-profit organization."
Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Gene Clary Park is located on New
Ebenezer Road (State Road 85A).
For more information, or to rent a
booth, call Wilma Jones at (850) 652-

CRESTVIEW Jenni
Perkins, Development
and Communications
manager for Covenant
Hospice in Crestview, is
giddily watching months of
preparation come together
as the dock ticks down
* toward Saturday's Blue Jean
Ball.
"I'm so excited," she
said. "I think I've said that
3,000 times." But she can be
allowed some enthusiasm.
The music hasn't even
started playing and already
the event looks like a sure
success.
"It's a casually elegant
evening to benefit Covenant
Hospice," Perkins explained.
"Everybody can come out in
their demin outfits or their
favorite jeans and enjoy
a nice steak dinner and a
dessert buffet."
Live entertainment will
include Soundsations (the
OWC show choir) and
Clark & Company, noted
performers of a variety of
Motown, '60s, and classic
rock. "They're a lot of fun,"
Perkins said of the band.
"They just really keep it
upbeat and they're great to
dance to."
Saturday's function,
which will be held at the
Crestview Community
Center on Commerce Drive
opposite the library, is the
first such event for Covenant
Hospice. But it looks like it's
just the beginning of what
will be a yearly affair.
"We're planning on
making this an annual
event," Perkins said. "It
has far surpassed my
expectations for an annual
eventinCrestview,especially

for a first year event."
Perkins said that initially
organizers had hoped
for a couple hundred
participants. "We said if we
get 200 people there we'll be
doing great," she said, "but
so far we got 300. We're just
really excited."
Covenant Hospice,
located on Redstone Avenue
behind Publix, is a non-profit
organization that started.
24 years ago in Pensacola.
There are now 11 branch
offices that serve 35 counties
in northwest Florida, south
Alabama and the Big Bend
area around Tallahassee and
Perry.
"One of the reasons that
we do fundraising events
is that we provide care to
families and their patients
facing life-limiting illnesses
regardless of their ability to
pay," Perkins explained. "In
2006 we provided more than

$1.3 million in unfunded
care. These are patients that
Don't have insurance."
As for Saturday's Blue
Jean Ball, "all the money
from this event stays here
in Okaloosa and north
Walton counties," Perkins
explained. "One hundred
percent of it stays right here.
People who are supportive
of our organization like
that." People know that
maybe neighbors or family
members will benefit from
their generosity, Perkins
said.
A drawing will be held at
the ball for a two-night stay,
including dinner for two, at
the Beau Rivage casino and
resort in Biloxi, Miss.
A highlight of the event
will be a silent auction of
35 ceramic cowboy boots
that have been decorated by
local artists, some of them
autographed by celebrities.

Included are boots signed
by country singer Clint
Black, football player Danny
Wuerffel, country singers
Gretchen Wilson and Big &
Rich, and "hick hop" artist
Cowboy Troy.
"We're really excited,"
enthused Perkins, again
employing the "e" word that
peppers her discussion of
the event. "We hope they'll
bring in lots of money to
support our services."
If you haven't bought
your Blue Jean Ball tickets
yet, there's good news: "We
have a few tickets left," said
Perkins.
You may call and reserve
by phone (850) 682-3628.

BORDER

CROSSINGS

Brian Hughes

Philly in Phall

Autumn in America's birthplace

PHILADELPHIA The
Liberty Bell, Independence
Hall and Betsy Ross' house
just scream "Philadelphia."
But further up our checklist
of must-sees were some
of the historic town's less-
known attractions, most
having little to do with Ben
Franklin or that stifling hot
fourth day of July in 1776.
Important as Philly is to
our nation's birth, it also
has much to offer beyond
Independence National
Park, and early autumn is a
delightful time to visit.
We started near the
airport at Bartram's Garden,
America's oldest living
botanical garden.
Naturalist, botanist and
explorer John Bartram's
home is an oasis on a
wooded estate overlooking
the Schuylkill River
(pronounced SKEW-kill). A
formal garden snuggles up
.to the stone house, begun
in 1731.
Since we stayed with
friends in Bucks County,
we took the train into town
the next day. We arrived.
in time for lunch, and yes,
we had Philly cheese steak
.sandwiches.
The Reading Terminal
Market, a cavernous former
railway station shed, is- a
fabulous place for lunch,
with dining tables clustered
throughout. We thought
we'd get our food from
Rick's, a leading purveyor
of the city's signature
sandwich, but with fame
comes long lines.
With so many choices,
there's no excuse to waste
time in line, so for the
same price (but no wait),
we got the same sandwich
from another vendor. To
accompany it we indulged
in a huge, soft pretzel,
another of the city's
signature foods.
For dessert we really
wanted a third famous
Philly food, the sticky
bun, but we found that the
wonderfully gooey, walnut-
laden treat has become a
rare commodity since my
childhood visits to our
Philly relatives.
Instead we cruised the
tempting selection of pies
and pastries offered at
an Amish family's stall.
(Amish farmers and bakers
usually come to the market
on Wednesdays)
As recently as the 1980s,
The City of Brotherly Love
was sadly lacking in the
commodity its nickname
touts. Today, however, you
can safely walk the clean,
well-marked downtown
streets. So we did a lot of
walking, and never once
felt uneasy.

Freebies & Rocky
A spectacular freebie is
the daily noon concert on
the restored Wanamaker
organ in what was once
Philly's main department
store. (Today it's a Lord &
Taylor.)
Usually Peter Richard
Conte, a legend among
organists, performs
the concerts. We gladly
overlooked the fact
that he mounted the
mammoth console nearly
15 minutes late, as his
stirring performance more
than made up for a little
tardiness.
Visitors can climb
the tower of the ornate
City Hall, another great
freebie, but tickets are at a
premium. We had missed
that day's allotment, but
the friendly visitor's center
staff assured us many were
available for the next day.
Plan in advance.

From City Hall we
walked through Love
Park to Benjamin Franklin

Parkway, a broad boulevard
festooned with flags of the
nations. At its foot stands
the temple-like Philadelphia
Art Museum. Sly Stallone
trotted up its stairs in the
first "Rocky" film, setting
a precedent for scores of
visitors less dignified than
us. Besides, we still had to
go to prison.

Off to Prison
We passed the Franklin
Institute, the city's world-
renowned science and
industry museum. (You
need practically a whole
day to see everything.)
Instead we strolled up
22nd Street, which dead-
ends at the. somberly
fortress-like Eastern State
Penitentiary. The first in the
country, it opened in 1829
and had running water
and central heat before the
White House did.
On the self-guided
audio tour, we took time
to explore crumbling cells,
peer around Death Row,
and, where permitted, walk
the echoing catwalks.
Afterwards, from the top
of the art museum steps, we
watched the lights of the
city twinkle on. (At least
two other groups of visitors
did the "Rocky" trot up the
steps as we sat there. Silly
tourists.)
For dinner, we walked to
the cheerful Chestnut Street
area near City Hall, where
the selection of places to eat
turned out to be vast.

Body Parts,
Independence
& South Street
The next day we sought
out the Mutter N useum.
Once a teaching museum
at the College of Physicians
of Philadelphia, it is, as
the sign outside proudly
proclaims, "disturbingly
informative."
In addition to a collection
of 200-someViennese skulls,
we saw such morbidly
fascinating artifacts as, the
Siamese twins' shared liver;
Grover Cleveland's tumor
(secretly removed during an
operation on a yacht in the
Potomac River); and read
wall-sized enlargements of
entirely-too-candid letters
from Ben Franklin to his
friends describing, in great
detail, his medical woes.
(My Aunt Doris would've
loved it. She was always
writing to me about her
intestinal rumblings.)
We arrived at the 55-acre
Independence National
Park too late that for the last
free tours of Independence
Hall for the day. (You can
book ahead online for a
small fee.) Instead we took
the last tour of Congress
Hall, which for ten years,
from 1790 to 1800, housed
the U.S. Congress.
Several blocks away is
South Street, a Bohemian,
in-your-face, lively and fun
shopping, nightclub and
restaurant district.
It thronged with left-
over hippies, artists, coat-
and-tie professionals,
geeks, tourists, skate boiz,
and everyone in between.
We poked in stores (I found
a CD of Count Basie doing
James Bond film music),
people-watched, and had
an exceptional Thai dinner
at a hole-in-the-wall eatery.
Alas, we hadn't allocated
nearly enough time to fully
explore and appreciate
this vibrant, clean, colorful
and historic city, including
its famed arts and theatre
district. We vowed to
return.
Besides, there were

more goodies to sample in
Reading Terminal Market,
Especially at that Amish
pastry stall.

Heather Nitzel
Youth Services Librarian

With the current trend of
putting so much emphasis
on testing, has your child or
a child you know lost their
love of reading? Do they
see it as work, a struggle, or
a chore? Although learning
to read' certainly involves
a great deal of work, and
perhaps even a little bit
of struggle, if a child sees
reading as a pleasure,
as a leisure activity, as
something they choose
to do, tests scores and
grades will inevitably rise
(unless, of course, reading
for pleasure replaces
necessities like homework,
which I certainly don't
recommend).

In an effort to combat a
negative attitude toward
reading, we are offering
two afternoon programs for
children. We welcome both
students who are home
schooled and students who
attend one of the fine public
or private schools in our
area. Both programs are on
Monday afternoons, with
sign-in beginning at 4 p.m.
and the actual program
beginning at 4:15 p.m. Each
program stands alone, so if
you cannot make it to every
program, just come to the
ones you can.
For students who are at
least six years old, Picture
Book Club is like a Story
Time but geared toward
children in Kindergarten,
first grade and second

grade. Children do not
have to be fluent readers
to enjoy the program. I'll
read picture books to them.
Sometimes we'll do plays,
and they'll have a small
part, which I will prompt.
We'll sing songs and- either
have a treat or make a craft.
Our next Picture Book Club
is Oct. 8. Children are
invited to bring their teddy
bear and six cookies to share
for our Teddy Bear Tea.
Designed for children
in grades three through
five, students must be
at least nine years old to
attend Chapter Book Tease.
Again, children do not have
to be fluent readers to enjoy
the program. They'll enjoy
a 10-minute read-aloud
from a chapter book and
activities that tie in with
the story. If they like the
portion of the book we read,
they can check the book
out and enjoy the whole
book. Our next Chapter
Book Tease is Oct. 22, and
we'll take a peek at "From

the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs.
Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.
L. Konigsberg.
Bring your child or a
child you know to age
appropriate programs that
are not based on reading
level and let them enjoy
reading books again.

PROGRAMS
Children ages three to six,
come join us for a road rally
today at Story Time. Enjoy
stories and songs about cars
and trucks. Sign-in begins
at 10 a.m. We'll start our
Story Time engines at 10:15
a.m. Next week, bring your
favorite dolly and enjoy
doll stories, poems, songs,
and activities. Create a new
doll to take home.
Be sure to enjoy the
Friends of the Library Book
Sale this weekend. You
can get first pick on Friday,
Oct. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. for
$1 admission or wait for
Saturday or Sunday (9 a.m.
to 4 p.m.), when there's no
admission fee. If you are a

member of the Friends of
the Crestview Library, there
is no admission fee for
Friday night. Membership
dues vary from $10 to $500
and are tax-deductible. Ask
for more information at the
circulation desk.
On Monday, Oct. 8, the
Picture Book Club will
have a Teddy Bear .Tea
for children ages six and
up and their teddy bears.
Please bring six cookies to
share. Sign-in begins at 4
p.m.; stories at 4:15 p.m.
Head and shoulders,
knees and toes, knees and
toes... Come sing and read
with us on Tuesday, Oct. 9
at Lap Sit. Children under
three and their caregivers
gather at 10 a.m. and the
stories and songs begin at
10:15 a.m. Older children
are always welcome.

OSTEOARTHRITIS:
Every year, an estimated two
million Americans undergo
arthroscopy on their knees,
shoulders, and on many other
joints. The results, however,
depend to a great extent on
the patient's observance of
certain tips and guidelines,
both before and after surgery.
But what should you know
about arthroscopy, and how
can you prepare for this
important operation? The
American Arthritis Society
has compiled some useful
and practical tips for self-care,
available on their Web site.
Each tip is easy to follow and
can be helpful in preparing
for the operation. These and
many more suggestions
regarding osteoarthritis can
be viewed online at: www.
americanarthritis.org.

game for the Roadrunners,
33-26.
In the first quarter,
Davidson looked to be the
dominant powerhouse,
with Drew Gibbons
rushing in 3 yards for the
Panthers first touchdown.
Dillan Lawson dove in the
two extra points to make it
an 8-0 game.
And on Davidson's
next possession, head
coach Chris Small gave
quarterback, Dakota Dean
the signal to run the ball.
The Panthers made
their next strike as Dean
tipped to Lawson who
rushed the pigskin for a
20-yard touchdown with
47.1 seconds left, making
it a 14-0 game in favor of
the black and teal.
But when the second
quarter rolled around and
Richbourg got possession,
they put in all their effort
to turn the game the other
direction.
After a 7-play drive,
Andrew Thomas pushed
in 8. yards into the end
zone with 4:07 on the clock
and a 14-6 game, ending
the half.
Davidson had to take
back their comfort zone,
and they did just that.
With7:05 left in the third,
Lawson ran the ball for 13
yards and a touchdown,
putting the Panthers back
on their mountain with a
20-6 game.
But after a 5-play try for
another six on the board,
Davidson was forced
to punt to a pumped
Richbourg team.
Jefferies broke out of
his shell with a sneak for
15 yards and a touchdown
with 3:12 left in the third.
He also ran in the two extra
points successfully when a
gap opened up after a hard
block by Dakota Josey.

quarter upset in favor of

Then Richbourg got
lucky. On the first onside
kick by Richbourg, Josey
grabbed the ball after a
Panther juggle, :giving
the ball back to the
Roadrunners f'th"haltf

Jefferies didn't take
any time to act on the
opportunity when he
sneaked in another 19
yards for a touchdown
after a 4-play spread. Bud
Austie made the extra
kick, placing Richbourg
over the Panthers by one,

The back and forth
game continued as Josey

for a quick six with 8:12

Richbourg, 27-20.
Davidson's Dean found
Stephen Frye for a 27-yard
pass and a touchdown
after a long 7-play crawl.
The extra point was
no good, keeping-'"the
Roadrunners alive into
their final possession of
the game.
William Jefferies once
again wowed the crowd as
he rushed 26-yards for his
third and final touchdown
of the game, giving his
team a 33-26 lead.
And even after a 6-play
drive by a determined
Panthers team, it wasn't
enough to get into end
zone for a possible tie
game. All four fumbles
by Davidson ended up
in turnovers opposed
to Richbourg's five total

fumbles with two ending
up in turnovers. ,
Andrew Thomas ended up
rushing 242 yards with 44
carries, making him THE
Roadrunner for the night.
Richbourg left the game
with 46 carries and a total
of 388 yards.
Davidson was close
behind them with a total of
36 carries and 245 yards.
Look for Richbourg
to take on Ruckel this
Thursday night at 6 p.m.
