New witness in Howard case?

Tom McLaughlin
Florida Freedom Newspapers
CRESTVIEW-Aninvestigator
tracking the killer of Melissa
Howard has come to believe she
was murdered by a professional.
"If it wasn't a professional,
it was someone who didn't
leave many clues behind," said
Crestview police Investigator
Richard Trent. "It looked like a
professional, whether it was or

not."
Crestview police
have received most of
the forensic evidence
removed from
Howard's home Jan.
6, 2006, the day the
33-year-old mother
of three was brutally
murdered.
It has provided
painfully few clues.
"We didn't get

anything back that's
going to allow us to
connect this to anyone,"
Trent said. "We don't
have anything to identify
anyone but her. All the
blood found on the scene
was hers."
Police arrived at
Howard's home at
222 Tiffot Court after
receiving a phone call at
about 11:15 p.m.

A man Howard was seeing,
her daughter and her daughter's
boyfriend had jimmied the lock
when they couldn't reach her
and found her body on the living
room floor.
Officers noted a wound to the
victim's neck, thought to have
been inflicted with a knife, and
"excessive blood pooled around
her head" a police report said.
The police theory that Howard
could have been "hit" is one that

people close to the victim have
been saying since the crime was
committed.
"I told them that the night it
happened," said Ronnie Daughtry,
who arrived at Howard's home
shortly after authorities did. "I
told them in front of that house
exactly what had happened."
What Daughtry told
investigators, according to the

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW Monday's City Council
meeting found council members confronting
a pair of potentially contentious issues -
and one easily embraced by all.
Relatively late in the meeting's busy
agenda was the presentation of the city's
proposed Sexual Offenders and Sexual
Predators Ordinance, a law the council
directed the city's Administrative Services
staff to write.
The city proposes a 2,500-foot barrier to
keep any convicted sexual offenders away
from a variety of locations where children
might congregate. Though the state requires
a 1,000-foot zone, Crestview's proposed
ordinance passed on a majority vote to more
than double it.
"There was some discussion as to
whether this would withstand the scrutiny

to be the quintessential southern plantation it emulates.

Baker mansion expected to fetch millions

Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
BAKER Thursday one of
the county's most stunning
homes goes on the auction
block.
Tucked discreetly into
the peaceful farmlands near
Baker, Quiet Meadow Farms
has been praised for its
"pure rural beauty," and the
mansion, sitting in its 71-acre
estate, has won accolades
for its craftsmanship and
attention to detail.
The home of former golf
pro-turned antiques dealer
Bill McKelvy and his wife,
Jan, the mansion was started
in 1997 and took five years to
build.
"He literally had 25

workers or more on the site
for five years," said Carl
Carter of J.P. King Auction
Company. "I've never
seen the kind .of elaborate
woodwork that this house
has."
The Gadsden, Ala.-based
auction house, founded in
1915, specializes in high-
end properties and will be
handling the 11 a.m. auction
Thursday.
Located on Griffith
Mill Road, the 5-bedroom,
8-bathroom home is filled
with antiques. Walkways
around its formal gardens are
made from bricks recovered
from turn-of-the-century
Chicago industrial buildings.
Gas lamps lining the curved,
quarter-mile driveway used

to illuminate streets in old
Savannah, Ga., and though
converted to electricity, still
flicker with that warm gas
touch.
With its steel frame,
elevator, three-car garage,
2-bedroom, 2-1/2 bath
servants' quarters,
exceptional insulation and
energy efficiency (electric
bills average no more than
$200 per month), five wells,
and a generator capable of
powering the entire estate,
Quiet Meadow Farms would
seem to be the home of the
future.
But all these features are
merely the infrastructure
supporting a gracious
southern mansion filled with
antebellum and European

fittings, furnishings and
details.
"You look at a piece of
furniture and it has a lot of
ornate carving," observed
Carter. "Well, you've got this
throughout the whole house.
He's a dealer in fine antiques
and he built the woodwork
throughout the whole house
using the techniques in the
antiques he sells."
Chamfered white oak
paneling, Italian marble,
French stained glass, and
5-inch wide pine flooring
from the old Sears building in
Chicago abound throughout
the house.

Fun, solemnity on Scout Day'
Brian Hughes e t I U .* .J -"
Crestview News Bulletin I t ,

CRESTVIEW Spanish
Trail Park was abuzz
Saturday with scores of
area Scouts of all types.
Duringtheday,Pinewood
Derby cars shot down a
four-lane track, an outdoor
game of "Battleship" was in
full swing, s'mores tempted
taste buds, radio buffs
contacted hams far and
wide, outdoor skills were
on display, and McGruff
the Crime Dog encouraged
everyone to "take a bite out
of crime."
"Everybody's having
fun and we're all getting
to learn about each
other's programs," said
Boy Scouts of America
Unit Commissioner Rae
Schwartz.
The day concluded as
Crestview's Troop 773
conducted "a very moving
flag retirement ceremony,"
said Schwartz. The scouts
and their leaders retired
close to 60 flags "in a
correct and respectful
ceremony, accompanied
by ,an explanation and
patriotic reading by one of
the Scouts," she said.
"The ceremony finished
with the raising of a new
flag over Spanish Trail
Park, and the reciting of
the Pledge of Allegiance,"
she continued. "Even on a
day of fun, Scouts served
the community by correctly
disposing of worn flags,
and by enhancing the park
with a new one."
An upcoming project
by a Troop 773 Eagle Scout
candidate will further
improve the park, Schwartz
noted.

HOWARD continued from Al

incident report filed the
night of the killing was "that
he believed the husband
had the victim killed."
Brian Howard, Melissa
Howard's ex-husband,
was taken into custody on
the night she was killed,
police records indicate. The
Howards had been engaged
in a custody battle, one
that Melissa Howard had
emerged from victorious,
for three years prior to the
homicide.
Howard provided a solid
alibi for his whereabouts
and was released after being

questioned. He did not
return a phone call seeking
comment for this story,
but has said in the past he
believes he will be a suspect
in his ex-wife's death until
an arrest is made.
Although forensic
evidence revealed little,
Trent said he, along with
Robbie Hughes with the
state attorney's office for
the 1st Judicial Circuit,
and Kenny Pinckard with
the Florida Department of
Law Enforcement, remain
determined to solve the
Howard case.

"Everything we come
up with, anything at all, we
investigate," he said. "We
just need to keep getting
pieces and bits and trying
to put the puzzle together."
He said he'd received
some encouraging news
Monday when a man who'd
only recently learned of
Howard's murder had
called and asked to be
interviewed.
Trent said the potential
witness lived out of state
and he was unsure when
the interview might take
place.

COUNCIL continued from Al

of the courts," said Mayor
David Cadle. Some cities
have expanded it so far that
courts have struck it down,
as it effectively banished
people from living in their
towns.
Crestview's proposed
law "is not complete," said
Administrative Services
Director Mike Wing. "We've
done some preliminary
work." Wing explained the
law "will be identical to
state statue," apart from the
expanded barrier length.
"As far as it affects people,
it'll be the same as the state
statute," he said.
A major topic, which was
second on the agenda, was
a request by Southside of
Florida developers to create
aPlannedUnitDevelopment
(PUD) for Adams Estates.
Wing explained that a
PUD designation allows
developers to create
specific amenities arid
building densities for their
developments, rather
than applying current
zoning. The property
under consideration is now
classified as R-1A. ,,
.'Irk';. conmmon*pta'ce-s
iPL pesently rN ired..
Wing said, "but in return for

a zoning change, developers
. will often do certain things,"
such as providing for buffer
areas, common spaces, and
walking paths, to name a
few amenities 'popularly
offered.
"No two PUDs will be
the same," Wing explained,
though "they tend to lean
generally in the same
directions."
Because the request for
PUD could lead to rezoning,
the meeting had to become a
quasi-judicial hearing, with
presenters sworn in.
"The developer gave
his case and showed what
all the amenities they
were offering," Cadle said,
including access to the
development.
"Basically the PUD
process is a process of
negotiation," Wing said.
The developer "proposes
one thing, the city proposes
another" based on needs of
people in area.
"It's just a process you go
through," he said. "You'll
always have very distinct
sides. Youjust negotiate until
you can make everybody as
happy as they can be." -.
PUDs, Wing .said. "are
very popular in, planning

circles."
Because her home adjoins
the proposed Adams Estates
development, council
member Linda Parker had
to abstain from voting.
Though the developer's
request appears to have
passed the initial council
vote, actual results have yet
to be announced due to a
questionable count.
Finally, in a simple show
of support -for the city's
mobility-impaired children,
the council voted to provide
Twin Hill Park with
handicapped playground
equipment.
In response to a earlier
request from the council,
Wing's department
researched various
equipment and made
recommendations. "The
council will consider them
after start of new budget
year," Wing said.
"They're mainly things
kids can roll up to in a
wheelchair and play with.
We don't have room to put
big pieces in our existing
playgrounds, but we can go
*around the periphegjy and
put in -.ome ot those pieces"
presented, 'to tq,.,.,pouncil

Perseverance is the

key in all things

From the

GM's Desk

Kelly Humphrey

When I started to work in
Crestview a little more than three
years ago, one of my first goals was
to join the Crestview Area Chamber
of Commerce's Military Affairs
Committee. I had several reasons
for this, not the least of which was
the fact that I grew up in a military
family, and I was interested in
joining a group of people whose sole
purpose was to support our local
military personnel.
Over the past few years, I've
found my membership in the MAC
to be enlightening, enjoyable and
enriching. Tuesday, Sept. 11, was no
exception.
The meeting's main speaker was
Air Force Col. Kenneth Rodriguez,
a special operations officer at
Hurlburt Field. As was fitting on the
anniversary of the tragic attacks of
2001, Col. Rodriguez presented the
most compelling presentation I have
ever seen on the War on Terror.
At the outset, Rodriguez explained
that he didn't intend to take sides
in the political debate over the war
in Iraq. His goal-was to give us an
overview of the threat that Islamic
extremism poses to our nation, and
what we can do about it.
As Rodriguez explained, the
War on Terror is unlike most of the
conflicts that the United States has
been involved in over the years.
There is no nation state to declare
war on, no uniformed soldiers to
combat. The enemy is motivated by
religious convictions that are hard
for us to understand. And while
most Americans think that the war
began with the attacks on Sept.
11, Rodriguez pointed out that the
hostilities actually began 30 years
ago, with the occupation of the U.S.
Embassy in Iran.
While the War on Terror is unique
in many respects, Rodriguez pointed
out that there are many things that
we can learn from the Cold War,
in which the forces of freedom
ultimately prevailed after 40 years.
"One of the things that we can
learn is how vital itis for the American
people to have the will to finish the
job," Rodriguez said. And then he
used one of my favorite words in the
English language: perseverance.
"We have to have perseverance if
we want to prevail," he said. "I love
my country, but Americans have the
kind of patience that comes in 30-
minute blocks, like a TV show.
"The enemy is not 10 feet tall,"
he added. "We know his strategies
and his weaknesses. We just have to
persevere in our fight."
Our commununity is blessed to have
people like Col. Rodriguez, who
can remind us just what it is we're
fighting for.

About
Congress
Lou Frey
We have discussed how
control of the Congress
gives the majority party
tremendous advantage in
moving legislation. We
have pointed out that
Democrat candidates
can now raise many
times more dollars than
when they were in the
minority. A recent report
in the U.S.A.Today
highlighted the advantage
the Democrats had in
the top 10 sources of
campaign contributions
from January 1 to June 30,
2007. Lawyers and law
firms gave $27.8 million
- 78% to Democrats;
Securities and Investments
$18 million 56% to
Democrats; Business
Services $6 million 63%
to Democrats; TV, movies
and music $4.6 million -
82% to Democrats; retired'
and real estate contributors
split their money ($28.2
million).
The majority of business
leaders don't agree with
many proposals made
by the Democrat Party,
especially in the tax, labor,
and energy areas, but they
are realists. They believe

that the Democrats will
win the election and run
the Congress in 2009. You
don't have to look at the
national public opinion
polls to see how the
election is going. If you-
suddenly see Republicans
are getting the most
money it means that the
business leaders feel the
Republicans can win. If
the percentage continues to
increase for the Democrats
it means that business
leaders believe the
Republicans will lose both
the House and the Senate.
The philosophy of both
parties is second to who
can win. Political power
overrides philosophical
compatibility.
The retirement of Sen.
John Warner (R-VA) and
the "forced" resignation
of Sen. Larry Craig
(R-ID), adds further to
the Republican problems
in trying to take back the
Senate. The Re'publicans
now havetWo more open
seats to defend. Idaho
has been,a Republican
stronghold for some
time. Former Democrat
Congressman Larry
LaRocco unsuccessfully
ran for lieutenant governor
last year, partly in an
effort to build a base for
the 2008 Senate race. He
has been campaigning

since January '07 for the
Senate seat. A lot will
depend on who Idaho's
Republican Governor C.L.
"Butch" Otter appoints
to fill Craig's term. It
is unfortunate from
LaRocco's standpoint that
tif Craig problem did not
surface in the spring or
summer of '08. As we saw
in the last Senatorial race
in Virginia, it is a toss-up
state. If the popular former
Governor Mark Warner
(D) runs he will go in as the
favorite. The Republican
Senatorial Committee is
having trouble raising
funds and the Republicans
have only two Democrats
on the "hit list," Senators
Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
and Tim Johnson (D-SD).
The Republicans are going
to find it hard to campaign
against Johnson, who
had a brain hemorrhage
last year and is slowly
recovering.
The fight between
Florida Democrats,
Democrat Presidential
candidates and the
Democrat National
Committee continues to
escalate. Last weekend
the six top Democrats
in the presidential field
bowed to pressure from
the early states, Iowa, New
Hampshire, Nevada, and
South Carolina and agreed

not to campaign in Florida.
It was a smart move on
the Democrat candidates'
part, as if any one of them
had not agreed to this
proposal they would have
been dead in the primary
elections in those states.
Florida Democrats have
been given 30 days to
work out a solution with
the Democrat National
Committee. Several
Democrat State Legislators
from South Florida
including Democrat House
Leader Steve Geller said
they are withdrawing their
support for Presidential
candidates because of the
boycott. It now appears
that some, if not all of the
candidates will avoid
the state Democrat Party
Convention in Orlando in
October. Raising money
will become increasingly
difficult for the National
Democrat Party and
Democrat Presidential
candidates if this issue
isn't resolved. You can be
sure that the Republican
governor and Republican
State Legislature will
not help the Democrats.
Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL)
has threatened legal
action and the Democrat
Members of Congress are
trying to put pressure on
the Democrat National
Committee to change the

rules.
Florida once again
will be a key state in the
Presidential election.
Senator Bill Nelson is
under consideration as
the Vice Presidential
nominee, but Florida's
nonparticipation in the
convention could end
any chances he has. In a
dose race the bitterness
this issue is causing could
convince some Democrats
not to vote in November
2008.
This could be enough
to haveFlorida by a
narrow margin once
again go Republican.
The Republican Party in
Florida and the Republican
National Committee
are keeping their heads
down, and while Florida
Republicans will be
penalized, they won't be
put out of the ballgame.
Finally, the remarks of
Republican Senate Leader
Mitch McConnell (KY)
illustrates what a tough,
cruel world members of
Congress live in. Last
week he was for Senator
Craig (R-ID) resigning
because of his conduct.
The day after Craig
announced his resignation,
McConnell talked about
Craig's "great" 30-year
career he helped end and
didn't blush.

Art quilts and Code Talkers at OWC

NICEVILLE Two very
diverse art exhibits are
appearing simultaneously
through Oct. 11 at the
Okaloosa-Walton College
Mattie Kelly Fine &
Performing Arts Center.
"Tactile Traces: Fine Art
Quilts" and "Warriors:
The Navajo Code Talkers
of World War II" opened
Sunday.

Fine Art Quilts
More than a dozen fine
art quilts represent the work
of Katherine Allen, Eleanor
McCain, and Barbara W.
Watler, three internationally
and domestically exhibited
artists.
"Tactile Traces" takes its
name from the legacy of
stitching and cloth that has
come from and through the
hands of the women. Many
works by the three artists
are featured in museums
and private collections
throughout the country.
"The fine art quilts in
the exhibit represent a wide
rangeoftheexpressivepower
of thread, cloth and color,"
said OWC spokeswoman
Sylvia P. Bryan, director of
marketing.

CROSSINGS

Perfectly situated, Munich
is a great base for explorations
in every direction, daytrips all
easily accessible by train. Don't
bother with a Eurailpass:
these daytrips are so dose that
it's cheaper to buy tickets at
the station. These excursions
are easily done in a day, but
prepare to fall for many of
these places' charms and
consider overnight visits.

BERCHTESGADEN
Never mind this beautiful
town's dose links with Hitler
& Co., which, alas, continue
to overshadow the beauty
of the lovely town, where
restaurants, cafes, shops, and
charming Bavarian churches
withtheirfascinatingwrought-
iron tombstones await your
discovery.
Take a tour of the salt
mines, an adventure worthy
of Indiana Jones himself,
during which you'll don a
vintage miner's coveralls and
slip and slide your way down
subterranean chutes.

KONIGSEE
From the nearby village
of Kbnigsee (reachable.
by bus or footpath from
Berchtesgaden), take a boat
ride to St. Bartholom5's, the
picturesque rural church with
its famous red onion domes on
the beautiful K6nigssee Lake.
Here a teenage Prince Ludwig
II made his confirmation
before ascending the Bavarian
throne.

DACHAU
The concentration camp
outside of the otherwise
charming village of Dachau
is one of Germany's most
depressing, landmarks, yet is

may astound you.

AUGSBURG
The exquisite Golden
Hall in the Rathaus, restored
from its wartime destruction,
evidences the wealth of
the Hapsburg's financial
capital. At noon, listen to the
lovely melodies from the
Perlachturm's carillon, then
climb the tower for great
views of this charming old
city. Explore the massive,
restored cathedral, including
the dungeon-like crypt.
For lunch, select goodies
at the wonderful outdoor
market, or dine at any .
of the many cafes and
restaurants around the
main square.

NURNBURG
(NUREMBERG)
Nuremberg's quaint
Old Town of half-
timbered houses lay in
ruins at war's end. Today
it's a medieval fairytale
setting, its soaring Gothic
churches and other
landmarks rebuilt from
their original stones.
Savor delicious
bratwurst in the main Bria
square, then for good ih
luck, turn the black ring squ
woven into the ironwork kirc
of the Schbne Brunnen the
("beautiful fountain").
(The more obvious gold
ring is a decoy!) Wander
the cobbled streets, delight
in the Toy Museum, enjoy
the views from the hilltop
castle, explore the churches
and sample mouthwatering
Lebkuchen spice cookies, a
Nuremberg specialty.

NEUSCHWANSTEIN
It's probably the most over-
visited landmark in Europe,
the lines to get in are often
insufferable and the hike up
to it is exhausting. And I've
been through it four times.
Why? Because King Ludwig
H's fairytale Neuschwanstein
castle is so romantically
compelling. Visitors today,
as in Ludwig's day, are
transported from reality into a
Wagnerian world of Teutonic
mythology.
Before (or after) your castle
tour, hike the dearly marked
paths and cross the Marien
Bridge for breathtaking
views of the P6llat Gorge, the
castle, and the valley beyond.
Above the village, don't miss
Ludwig's childhood castle
Hohenschwangau.

Ladies, come discover a ginm that is changing women's
Slaves 30 minutes at a time. Come discover Curves.

Located at 775 N. Ferdon Blvd, Ste.
C, in the Northview Plaza, Curves Fitness
and Weight Loss Center offers circuit
training exercise routine that combines
cardio and strength training.
The Curves Workout uses hydraulic
resistance forcing fluid through a
restricted orifice to provide this
resistance. This resistance is similar
to aquatics and becomes a function
of speed. The faster your movement,
the more resistance you will create.
Everyone, no matter the fitness level,
from 9 to 109 is accommodated can
workout safely and effectively
The Curves Workout alternates
between an upper body strength station,
an aerobic recovery station and a lower
body strength station, in 30-seconf
intervals. This state of the art system of

exercise allows you to accomplish both
cardiovascular conditioning and strength
training.
Strength training is the secret to
permanent results.
Research shows that if you are strength
training while losing weight, your body will
first use its stored fat for fuel. A pound
of muscle burns up to fifty calories per
day, at rest. The Curves Workout actually
raises metabolism during a weight loss
program by increasing muscle mass. If
you gain five pounds of muscle, you've
raised your metabolism 250 calories per
day
Raising metabolism is critical to
permanent results. Strength training has
long been the missing link in women's
fitness. Research has found that strength
training can increase weight loss 300

percent. An increase in muscle tissue will
burn more calories even while sleeping.
Today, everyone is very busy We, at
Curves, respect and admire that you are
taking time from your busy schedule to
acknowledge, the importance of your
health and well-being. The Curves
Workout was designed with you in
mind providing the cardiovascular and
strength training workouts to be done
simultaneously using double-positive
resistance stations. This unique concept
reduces your workout time to only thirty
minutes. The Curves Workout eliminates
the lowering of the weight, thereby
eliminating more muscle soreness. If
you feel you could go longer than thirty
minutes you will increase the intensity of
your workout.
The Curves Workout provides one

final aspect to your success. Unlike
more equipment, which is designated
for men, the Curves Workout is made to
fit a woman's body. Our members find
they are able to accomplish their weight-
loss goals more effectively in our women
friendly environment.
The Curves Weight Loss Program revs
up the metabolism, encouraging the
body to burn calories, but still lets the
person eat regularly and eat a variety of
foods.
Curves new hours are Mon.-Fri. 7
a.m.-7 p.m. and Sat. 7-11 a.m. Curves

The Baker volleyball
team is looking to have a
solid season this year. With
more than half a dozen
games under their belt,
not mentioning a weekend
tournament, the Gator girls
are setting their sights on
the title.
"I think by the end of
the year we're going to gel
really well together," Senior,
Chelsea Combest said.
"The only time we don't
play well is the time we
don't talk to each other.",

With a 6-2 overall record,
the Gators' last tournament
in Navarre seemed to speak
volumes on the progress
the team. and Coach Kathy
Combest wanted to make.
With Combest making six
aces, three kills, nine assists
and three digs it created a
domino effect for others like
seniors Whitney Boutwell,
Apryl Crawford and Sidney
Boutwell to find their niche
and combine with a total
of four aces, seven kills, six
assists, one block and 16
digs.

Crestview looks to West Gadsden Gators eye another win this Friday

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin

CRESTVIEW-Crestview
had a bit of trouble going
into their game against the
Niceville Eagles this past
Friday.,-. : ,. ..
WiththeBulldog-s.haxing
only nine first downs with
the majority in the second
half, Crestview had their
back against the wall while
Josh McDorman, of the
Eagles, ran the scoreboard
up, throwing 14 out of 24
for 274 yards.
The Bulldogs tried to
get their morale back with
a touchdown by Jordan
Glover, following with the
two extra points by Brett
Moore with 5:34 min left in
the third quarter.
But since Crestview
couldn't get a handle on
their passing game, which
combined for 99 yards,
the Eagles defense nabbed
two interceptions off Jason
Parker of the Bulldogs.

Now Crestview is
looking to next Friday
where they take on the
West Gadsden Panthers
from Greensboro.
West Gadsden was 4-5
overall last year, not really
playing anyone native to
this area's football schedule
other than Freeport and
Jay.
But the
Bulldogs fans
are hoping that
through all t
the hardships
of last weeks
game, that
Crestview by
sticks with a
strong sided offense to run
or throw the ball.
With both rushing and
passing under 100 yards,
Crestview needs to push
either their running game or
passing game to overpower
the other. Mixing things up
just didn't seem to work
against Niceville.

Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin

BAKER It seems
Cameron Domangue might
need to work a little on his

The Baker. quarterback

press Friday in a 52-

S0 X 'But the

2-of-7 passes for 22 yards.

that Domangue would use
the pass as a decoy to run
the ball up and down the
field.
Is Baker complaining?
Of course not.
In "-addition to
Domague's strong play,
players like Josh Beck,
Kevin Edge, Tyler Moberly,
Kellan Meeks and Marcus
Jones are starting to create
the backbone of Baker's
offense with a total of 164
yards rushing against the
Eagles.
"Well they (Franklin)
just kept giving us the
opportunity to run the
ball like we did. It wasn't
really something we
planned on doing, but the
situation kept presenting
itself so we took advantage
of it,' said Coach Bob
Kellogg. "Even though

Hoboes work on getting communication down

Robert Young

Communication is the
plan that the Laurel Hill
Volleyball team is working
on so they can take their
season as far as possible.
"This team is stronger
because a lot of our core
players are back, and the
ones that are stepping
up are juniors so I have
another whole year with
them," said coach Kent
Zessin.
"We're really focusing
on our communication,
passing and serving. The

chemistry really wasn't
there last year so we're
working on those things at
every practice."
From what the girls are
expressing Laurel Hill is
big on practicing solely for
each individual team.
More and more teams
are getting into a "football
strategy" mindset and
preparing for schools by
the tapes and the previous
numbers.
And even though rival
Baker routed the Hoboes
3-0 (25-17, 25-11 and 25-22),
Laurel Hill is taking that

Freeport was a game that Baker really
wants to get back into.
"They didn't play together. They didn't
talk. Instead they just looked around and
lacked the intensity that volleyball is. On top
of that you can't prepare for who you play
by how they play," Coach Combest said.
"This isn't like football or basketball, you
have no control over that ball. I've been doing
this for 22 years and what I think one should
do is just stick with the fundamentals. We
really have to work in the middle because
we lost one of our best starters and moved a
lot of the girls around."
It's apparent, that Baker has been
changing some of their positions to tailor to
losing some of their best girls last year.
And with the flow of junior varsity

Gator volleyball

joining the ranks, Coach Combest and the
girls are doing everything they can to get
them in that varsity mindset.
"The game against Vernon and Laurel
Hill you could tell that they really pushed
these girls. They walked up to these girls
and told them it was all right and not to
worry about," Coach Combest said.
"They're never going to getworse; they're
only going to get a lot better."
On top 6f the girls' team pushing through
the season to nab the title, look for Coach
Combest to nab her title.
This Thursday, Coach Combest could be
going home with her 500th career win as a
head coach, something that has never been
reached in Baker before.

under strong consideration
to how they will dictate the
way they practice.
Even the tournament
back in Chipley started to
get the minds rolling on the
team on what they really
need to worked on.
"We had a pretty good
tournament, I felt like we
our goal was to win three
but we won two and had
an 'opportunity to win
four," Zessin said.
1 "But the girls realized
that they could play with
anybody. We beat a 5-A and
a 2-A. We got to the final

four last year in the 2-A.
But I'm real proud of them
and I think they'll be ready
to take on the those harder
division schools down the
roads while we participate
in these tournaments."
One of the improvements
the Hoboes are looking
to take part in other than
communication is their
middle game.
Like Baker, the Laurel
Hill girls are trying to turn
around their digging game
to chop off the aces from
their opponents.
"It's something that

we're working on and our
two captains are doing a
great job to get them all
into how we want to be,"
Zessin said.
"I like the attitude these
girls are portraying this
year and our goal is to win
districts this year."
The girls will need a
positive look as they're
taking on one of the hardest
volleyball schedules this
year in the district.
Look for Laurel Hill take
on Rocky Bayou tomorrow
at 5 p.m. (JV) and 6 p.m.
(V).

was a close game up until the third quarter."
Now the Gators are looking for their second win this
season when they visit Arnold on Friday.
The Marlins were 5-5 overall last year, but only 2-4 at
home.
"Teams are now looking to take out Cameron. There
isn't any reason why they wouldn't, he's one of our
best runningbacks beside being the quarterback and it
presented itself last game," Kellogg said.
"They're (Arnold) going to want us to throw the ball
and take care of Cameron, but if something does happen I
just hope that our other boys can fill in those yards ran."
