Why's

growing.
Brian Hughes
Crestview News Bulletin
CRESTVIEW With the recent
announcement that Crestview is
officially the county's biggest city, it's
confirmed that growth is occurring in
our area.
One person who's seen the growth
firsthand is Crestview Postmaster
John Blair. He explained that his
post office handles regular routes,
with a full time letter carrier serving
an average of 600 deliveries, and
auxiliary routes, on which part time
carriers handle between 200 and 400
customers.
"When I got here in January, there
were 25 regular routes and four
auxiliary routes," Blair said. "In two
weeks, two auxiliary routes will
become regular routes."
The growth represents almost 400
new deliveries.
"Our growth rate this fiscal year is
7.3 percent. Last year was 7.8," Blair
S said.
s"A lot of it is military influx," he
added. "Obviously it's a lot cheaper
to buy a house up here than down
there" in the south end of the county.
|- Crestview Mayor David Cadle also
keeps close tabs on the growth of the
city, as well as the region.
"A lot of it has to with the
availability of land," Cadle said. "The
south end of the county doesn't have
room to expand right now. Also we
have found that construction costs are
cheaper in the north end of county."
As new residents hook up to
Crestview's water system, they're
invited to complete a survey that
helps city planning officials obtain
a sense of how many new residents
they're serving, as well as how many
vehicles they will add to city streets.
S "The situation has changed over
the years," Cadle said. "It used to

A North Brook Drive home was

a lightning strike during the severe
thunderstorm that passed over Crestview.
Oswald Alford, who is a district fire chief
at Eglin Air Force Base, and his mother
escaped uninjured.
The lightning strike was a direct hit to the
middle of the roof and the flames quickly
burned through and spread throughout
the attic.
Fire crews were on scene less than 10
minutes after the 911 call was made.
North Okaloosa, Crestview, and Dorcas
Fire Departments responded to the scene.
The fire was declared under control by
6 p.m., about 30 minutes after firefighters
began battling the blaze.
Officers from Eglin and Baker Fire
Departments also responded to aid the
homeowner in, salvaging valuables and
other items. /
Crews were on scene until almost 10
p.m.
Neighboring homes were not damaged.
Last summer, two other homes in the
same area were struck by lightning.

Crestview News Bulletin
Crestview's strategic location on the
"Southern Tier" route used by long-
distance bicycling enthusiasts has resulted
in at least two visits by dedicated riders
this year. In February, Capt. John Cook
came through, heading west as he raised,
money and awareness for children of
fallen soldiers.
In early summer, a whole family
of cyclists wheeled through, raising
awareness of Down syndrome along the
way.
Sunday, it's a trio who calls themselves

by Oprah Winfrey for its selfless mission

Haiti.
"All donations made to

COUNTY continued from 1
be the reason that people
moved here was military
assignment. The new
reason is people moving
from the south end of the
county to the north end.
We're assuming it's people
wanting more affordable
housing or people wanting
to move away. from the
coast to get away from
devastating storms."
Military assignment
has changed to the second
most common reason
for Crestview's new
population growth, Cadle
said.
"That's been an
interesting thing for us to
watch," he said.
According to Ken
Wright, a realtor with
ReMax Southern Realty, "I
think the growth is because
it's the only place you can
build newer homes and
the developments of today
are offering' a lot more than
they have in the past."
Wright works with
Emerald Coast Partners,
presently the largest
developer in Crestview
and the north end of the
county. Their developments
include Freedom Walk,
the Preserves at Campton,
Majestic Oak Vineyard and
Grand Oak Plantation, all
of which offer amenities
that please and attract
potential residents.
"Developers who listen
to their customers know
they have to do more
than provide streets. They
have to provide amenities
people want," Wright said.
Wright also attributed
the region's population
growth to Bob Sikes
Airport. "They have been
very good at bringing
businesses and enhancing
the business environment,"
he said.
"Crestview is a very
much more diverse
community than it was
20 or 30 years ago," said
Wright, a retired member
of the military, as well as
a native of the area, "and a
lot of that has been due to
the military influence."
Folks escaping the
congestion and potential
storm impact of coastal
communities to the south;
military personnel assigned
to Eglin and Hurlburt,
and people seeking more
affordable, amenity-
enhanced homes have all
become our neighbors.

FROM THE
PULPIT r Laboringinthefdom
Michael Green Jr.
I therefore, the prisoner
of the Lord, beseech you
that ye walk worthy of the
vocation wherewith ye are
called, with all lowliness and
meekness, with longsuffering,
forbearing one another in love;
endeavoring to keep the unity
of the Spirit in the bond of
peace. Ephesians 4:1-3
Monday is the day
that we celebrate Labor
Day. It has always been
interesting to me that we
celebrate work by taking
a day off. However, it is
beneficial to stop and think
about the importance of
hard work. I am thankful
for the dedicated example
provided by my parents
and grandparents as they
struggled to provide for
their respective families.
My grandparents were
part of what is oftentimes
referred to as the "greatest
generation" of people to be
born in the United States.
There is much that we learn
from their work ethic and
dedication to persevere
through someof our nation's
greatest trials. This is an
amazing accomplishment,
but what made a greater
impact than their physical
labor was their dedication
to the kingdom of God.
They worked hard to feed
their family physically, but
the greater portion of their
efforts was dedicated to
laboring to serve God.
The Bible teaches us
about labor. Some works in
the Bible were accomplished
for us approximately
2,000 years ago. The work
of salvation was wholly
completed when Jesus laid
down his life on the cross.
Jesus came into the world
to save his people from
their sins (Matthew 1:21).
He died for the elect family
of God (Romans 8:28-33),
and all for whom he died
will be in Heaven some day
(John 6:39).
Is there any labor that you
engage in that will assist you
(or anyone else) in entering
eternal glory? No! In
Ephesians 2:8-9, the Apostle
Paul writes, "For by grace
are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God: Not of
works, lest any man should
boast." The work necessary
to save you from your sins
was completed on the cross
of Calvary. When Jesus cried
out, "It is finished," the work
of eternal salvation was
complete.
In light of what Jesus
did on the cross, Christians
are instructed in scripture
numerous times to labor.
In our introductory verse,
Paul instructs us to walk
worthy of the vocation
wherewith we are called.
The word vocation literally
means an occupation. Paul
is teaching us that Christian
service is not merely a part-
time job or a hobby, but an
occupation to which we
are wholly dedicated. In
light of the work that Christ
accomplished on the cross,
we need to be laboring in
serving him. Paul's prayer
for the Colossian church
was that they "might walk
worthy of the Lord unto
all .pleasing, being fruitful
in every good work, and
increasing in the knowledge
of God (Colossians 1:10)."
Is your life pleasing to the
Lord? Would an accurate
appraisal of the decisions
that you make reflect Christ-
worthy thinking? If not, you
need to repent and follow
after the Lord. Paul teaches
us that we are to labor in
meekness. Pride is something
that we all struggle with.
We want to take care of our
wants and needs first. If we
are laboring in the Lord, then
we are seeking Him first.
After that we are placing
others above ourselves.
This includes the needs of
your spouse. This involves
ministering to those in your
church and neighborhood
that are in need. Jesus teaches
us to seek first the kingdom
of God and his righteousness
(Matthew 6:33). We are not to
worry about our needs. He
will see to them!
We are also called to labor
in love, even in those times
when we are confronted with
those that are unlovable. We
are also to labor to do that
which is good. The Bible also
teaches that we are to labor
to increase in the knowledge
of God. The Bible teaches us
in the aforementioned verses
(and hundreds more) that
we are to labor while we are
living in this present world.
As you have already
figured out, there is much to
be busy about in serving the
Lord. It is my prayer that we
will get to work. While we
enjoy periods of rest in our
physical labors, let us never
take a vacation from serving
the God of Heaven and Earth!
Whatever our burden in this
life, it is light as a feather
when compared to the work
of eternal salvation that was
accomplished on the cross.

it and got frustrated, but their
were some opportunities early
in the game, but he did. he

said.
"I have to remember this.
is Cameron's second game as
quarterback and I mean for
the second game the kid is
doing a great job. I'm pleased
with what he's doing but it's
not entirely the quarterback
it's the entire team and we
need to work on that."
Bozeman's Mason Bennent
provided the spark for the
Bucks with more than 180
yards of total offense. He

touchdowns for the Bucks,
including three rushing. He
caught the other one on a pass
from Andrew Brown.
Cory Nelson also had
a score on an interception
return.
"We're a young team as for
kids on the field. There's a lot
of kids that don't have that
much experience. It hurt us
early losing Billy Whatmough
and Anthony Thompson, so
there were a lot of two's and
three's that had to step up
tonight," Kellogg.
"We have to simplify and
that's what we need to do.

On offense, Jonathon

of touchdown passes.
He connected with Artis

Peacock completed
3-of-6 passes for 56

an interception. Glover
had a team-high 70

receptions.
The Bulldogs found
success on the ground
as well. They rushed for
163 yards as a team, led
by Tyler Rollo's 46. Rollo
scored on a 1-yard burst
in the third that closed
the scoring.
Also scoring on the
ground for Crestview
(1-0) were Brett Moore,
D.D. Johnson and Glover.
Chris Briley added 42
rushing yards.
"The goal for the
offense is to keep
improving," Brunson
said. "We're trying to
evaluate and work on
our veer and I think we
accomplished that."
The Bulldogs also
accomplished holding the
second-year program of
the Eagles in check with
their defense. The Eagles
had just 16 yards total on
the ground, and 124 total
yards of offense.
LCCA reached
Crestview territory only
twice all game, and saw
their best chance run out
at the end of the first half.
The Eagles drove down
the field after Crestview
scored with 1:07 left in
the second period, but
the clock ran out with
them on the Bulldogs'

halftime.
"The), have gotten

Terry Cobb and Chris

BAKER FAIS SHORT OF WIN
The Gators first regular season game ends up in a loss against the Bozeman Bucks
Robert Young
Crestview News Bulletin
In a long, drawn-out
game filled with penalties,
incomplete passes and
faulty communication
on both sides, Bozeman
outlasted Baker, 37-15,
on Friday in the season
opener.
"There were so many
plays in the game that
we had opportunities
to make, but we didn't
and it was a momentum
breaker," said Gators Bob
Kellogg.
"Too many dropped
passes, too many missed
assignments. I thought
we were prepared and
even though we did play
hard, there were some
plays we just didn't
execute."
The game started
out for Baker as Billy
Whatmough was taken
out of the game due to
a minor injury, cycling
one of the Gators' prime
starters, something that
Baker would have to get
used to throughout each
quarter.
With five turnovers,
the Gators knew they
had to work on their
communication on
getting the ball down the
field.
"We have to get better,
we have to stop all the
turnovers. We didn't lose
to Bozeman, we lost to
ourselves, but don't get
me wrong Bozeman is
a strong team and they
showed it," said Kellogg.
"* I told the boys all this
after the game and now
they know if they don't
perform we won't have a
chance.

After battling to a

Bulldogs coach Matt
Brunson wanted to see
some improvement.
He saw plenty as
Crestview opened the
regular season with a
42-0 rout over Lake City

"We'll take it,"
Brunson said. "The main
thing was to improve from
last week and we did that
well. It's a step in the right
direction."
Five different players
scored for the Bulldogs,
while the defense gave
them great field position all
night. Nine of Crestview's
11 possessions began on
the Eagles' side of the field,
and the Bulldog defense
forced three turnovers
when it wasn't stopping
their visitors cold.
"The defense played
well," Brunson said. "Early
