"I have a dream."

King, Jr.
Dr. King's dream was hon-
ored as reality in Flagler Park on
Monday with prayer, parade, step
dance and steel drum.
"It is a reality now," Rev. P.
G. Livatt, pastor of Stephen AME
Church said of Dr. King's dream
of racial equality. Using the public
address system of an Okeecho-
bee County Sheriff's Office patrol
car, she told the crowd: "Because
of our faith we have been able to
carve out the mountains of de-
spair with a stone of hope."
"We know we are free at last,"
she said, quoting from Dr. King's

Chamber
struggling
but open
By Eric Kopp
Okeechobee News
Despite rumors to the contrary,
the Okeechobee County Chamber
of Commerce is open for busi-
ness.
It's no secret the Chamber is
having a tough time of it financially
so volunteers are manning the of-
fice for the time being.
"We're not inundated with
money," said Brenda Appleton,
the former Chamber executive di-
rector and a current Chamber of
Commerce board member. "We're
a volunteer board and we're work-
ing on a volunteer basis. The board
feels strongly about keeping this a
viable organization.
"We believe in it strongly
enough that we're doing all we can
to keep it open," she added.
Mrs. Appleton, who ran the
Chamber for a little over 22 years,
said rumors that the current direc-
tor, Candace Burke, had quit be-
cause she wasn't getting paid were
also false.
Ms. Burke, who is Mrs. Apple-
ton's daughter, has been out due
to health reasons. To make matters
worse, both of her two children
have also been ill.
"If it was a money issue, she'd
been gone months ago," said Mrs.
Appleton. "There's no truth to the
rumor she quit because she wasn't
getting paid. She hasn't abandoned
us."
She said the rumor prob-
ably started because the Chamber
wasn't open much during the holi-
day season, which is not unusual.
Mrs. Appleton said the Chamber
is normally only open a couple of

days during the holidays.
Until Ms. Burke returns, her mother said
the Chamber will utilize volunteers so that
it doesn't end up like the St. Lucie County
Chamber of Commerce or the Chamber
of Commerce in Moore Haven which have
both closed.
"Chambers are struggling desperately,"
said Mrs. Appleton.
Like so many other businesses in this
economic climate, the local Chamber is bat-
tling to make enough money to pay its bills.
Since the Chamber receives no money from
either the city or county, it relies on member-
ship dues and special events to put money
into its coffers.
According to Mrs. Appleton, membership
dues bring in between $20,000 and $25,000
per year while it's expenses run between
$4,000 and $5,000 per month. The Cham-
ber relies heavily on two festivals-Speckled
Perch and Labor Day to make up the gap-
ing difference between its income and ex-
penses.
'And when we have bad weather (dur-
ing festivals) it kills us-we're back to zero,"
she said.
Smaller events, such as the Christmas
Festival, basically only pay for themselves
and are done primarily for the community,
she pointed out.
The Chamber also raises some money
from the sale of area maps as well as spon-
sorships for those maps. While there are
normally grants available for use by the
Chamber, Mrs. Appleton said those grants
have almost dried up.
Thankfully, she added, the Chamber
owns its building at 55 S. Parrott Ave. "free
and clear."
Honoring Dr. King's Dream
This year's Speckled Perch Pageant will
be held Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium
on the Okeechobee Freshman Campus,
610 S.W. Second Ave. The annual Speckled
Perch Festival will be held Feb. 13 and 14.
Mrs. Appleton said a gun class will be
held at the Chamber on Thursday, Jan. 21,
beginning at 7 p.m.
So, the festivals will go on and the Cham-
ber will be open five days a week from 9
a.m. until noon and from 1 until 3 p.m. And
to quote Mrs. Appleton: "It's business as
usual."

serve, everyone has a dream."
Prior to the speech, many of the par-
ticipants marched through downtown
Okeechobee to Flagler Park, some carry-
ing signs with pictures of Dr. King or one
of his quotations. A parade followed the
march. The event was also marked by per-
formances from the Yearling Middle School
Step Team and the Chobee Steelers, a steel
drum band.

Argument over work leads to man's arrest
By Eric Kopp
Okeechobee News
A woman was uninjured after
her husband apparently threatened
her with a knife during an argument
that apparently started because she
wanted him to go to work.
Miguel Perez, 25, S.W 18th Ave.,
Okeechobee, was arrested Sunday, Migue
Jan. 17, on a felony charge of aggravated
assault and a misdemeanor charge
of battery. He is being held in the
Okeechobee County Jail without
bond.
Astacio, of the Okeechobee County
Sheriff's Office (OCSO), stated that
the couple began to fight around
Perez 7:30 a.m. Sunday when she tried to
get him to go to work but he didn't
want to go.
At some point Perez allegedly grabbed
his wife by the front of her blouse and held a
knife to her chest. However, the man did not
harm his wife with the knife.
A woman who lives with Perez and his
wife went outside to call law enforcement
for help. While on the phone, Perez report-

FWC reports animals survived cold snap
Even though the recent cold snap brought
many cold-stunned sea turtles into shallow wa-
ters and onto shorelines across the state, the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Com-
mission (FWC) and its many partners saved
the majority of the animals from certain death.
Frigid water temperatures stunned thou-
sands of sea turtles throughout the state. If left
unaided, most of these turtles would not have
survived. Many would have been attacked
by predators, been hit by boats or simply
drowned. Rescuers worked feverishly for more
than a week to save the immobilized animals,
rescuing and eventually releasing nearly 80 per-
cent of the affected sea turtles. FWC biologists
are confident that most of the sea turtles will
not suffer long-term impacts from the stunning
event.
Additional good news is emerging from
those who have been working diligently to
save the animals. Rescue of the sea turtles by
the FWC and its many partners could prove
beneficial to the animals in the long term.
"We've been able to tag many more turtles
than ever before, which enables us to learn
about their biology," said Dr. Blair Withering-
ton, FWC biologist. "It's been a great opportu-
nity for data collection; it's unprecedented to
have access to so many turtles at one time."
The majority of the sea turtles affected by
the cold weather are green turtles, a federally
listed endangered species.

Okeechobee News
Once again Okeechobee County Prop-
erty Appraiser Bill Sherman is being taken to
court. For several years Florida Power & Light
(FP&L) went to court to protest the assessed
value Mr. Sherman placed on their assets in
the county. Even though the utility company
was successful in challenging Mr. Sherman's
assessment for two tax years, they now ac-
cept his assessment without question.
This time Embarq is protesting the value
Mr. Sherman is placing on their assets. Un-
like FP&L, where each tax year was heard as
a separate case, nine years of disputed Em-
barq property values will be decided in one
court case. In the FP&L cases Mr. Sherman
said that the difference came about because
he used a different methodology to calculate
property value than FP&L used. In the case
of Embarq, he said the discrepancies came
about because Embarq figured depreciation
differently than he did.
For 2009, the last tax year in dispute, Mr.
Sherman calculated that Embarq's assets in
the county were worth $28,694,000 while
Embarg said the value was $15,329,721.
The dispute involves each tax year back to
2001. Each year there is considerable dif-
ference between Mr. Sherman's values and
Embarq's values.
The date and place for the case to be
heard has not been set yet. The trial could
take place here or in an adjoining county.

Man accused of hitting pregnant woman
By Eric Kopp
Okeechobee News
An Okeechobee man
was arrested after he al-
legedly hit a pregnant
woman with an 8-foot
long stick during a fight
Monday night.
Tony Andrew Jack-
son, 20, N.E. 32nd St.,
was arrested Jan. 18 on Tony Andrew
a charge of aggravated Jackson
battery on a pregnant
person. He was booked into the Okeecho-
bee County Jail under a bond of $3,500.
According to an arrest report by Deputy
Eliberto Carmona, of the Okeechobee
County Sheriff's Office (OCSO), a fight
broke out between four women around
9:58 p.m. Two of the women involved
were apparently with Jackson.
At some point during the fight Jackson
picked up the stick and allegedly threat-
ened to hit the victim. A friend of the victim
reportedly warned the man that the wom-
an was pregnant, but Jackson ignored the
warning and hit the victim in the left side,
stated Deputy Carmona.
The report does not indicate if the vic-
tim received medical treatment for her in-
juries.

Fishing tournament
For the third day in a row Saturday the
crowds were at the Scott Driver ramp sup-
porting the participants of the Bassmaster
Southern Open. Aaron Martens, Davy Hite,
the Lane brothers, and many others stated
how they had not seen as many people at
any Open as they had this week. They were
well received around town and very pleased
with the way the week went even with the
cold water temps.
They should forget about Okeechobee
and run the tournaments from Clewiston
where there are more hotels and restau-
rants.
In Clewiston, they enjoy the ample sup-
ply of hotels for 398 fishermen and the fam-
ily members that may join them. All of them
love the over abundance of restaurants in
that town. As far as the facility- Scott Driver
seems to be handling it's own just fine.
The Okeechobee facilities have direct
access to the lake. In Clewiston you have to
lock in and out less time to fish.
The next tournament will the FLW
Eastern Division, Jan. 27-30, from the Scott
Driver ramp.
Haiti
All these people who were in Haiti to
help before the earthquake are now rush-
ing to get out of there now that their help is
really needed.
It is better that untrained personnel are
evacuated and leave rescue to the people
who are trained in this. They would just be
in the way, in most cases, and require food,
shelter and other resources that are needed
by the military or rescue teams.
The volunteers and missionaries who
were there and are not trying to get out
most likely do not have the training for such
an emergency situation. If they stayed, they
would just be more people to feed and
house. The International Red Cross and
other relief agencies are sending in people
who are trained in the skills needed. Law
enforcement agencies are sending in of-
ficers with the dogs that can help locate
trapped people. Specialists are going in
who can remove rubble without causing it
to crush people who might still be trapped,
etc. Medical personnel are going to provide
care. A bunch of untrained volunteers try-
ing to help would not be that much help.
The Red Cross apparently is swamped with
people who have volunteered to go, but
they are only sending people who have the
actual skills needed.
How could a Missionary even think
about leaving? Missionaries are actually
needed MORE than ever! They are there
sharing their Faith and that Faith is needed
to find a way through all the terrible grief
those left behind will face. It doesn't matter
what line of work brought the volunteers to
Haiti prior to the quake. Today two hands
can dig through rubble. Carry a stretcher.
Dish up food. Hold a child. Carry supplies.
Their job there isn't done yet.
Food and water are in limited supplies.
Anyone who is there, no matter how well
intentioned, is going to need food and water
and that puts more of a strain on the already
limited resources. Let the untrained people
who have a way to get home go ahead and
get out of there and let the trained folks take
over. I read the International Red Cross has
plenty of people volunteering to go, but they
are only taking those with needed skills.
There are plenty of native people there to
help with the unskilled tasks. The more peo-
ple you have in the country, the greater the
need for food and water, which was already
in short supply before the earthquake. They
also need to start evacuating as many of the
Haitian people as they can if they have a
place to go. If they have relatives in another
country who can take them in, get them out
of the disaster zone. I know there are many
Haitian families in Florida who will soon be
taking in displaced relatives and orphaned
children.
I was just watching CNN, and a UN
truck came with water and high protein
biscuits. There were woman, children and
men, but it was the men who were pushing
and shoving to get IN FRONT of the wom-

an and children. Then, they thought the
biscuits were bad, so they began to throw
them to the ground and stomp on them.
The UN truck had to leave without giving
out any water. This reminded me of a story
my son told me about three years ago. Out
on patrol, the Mohawk ran across a smug-
gling boat. They were from Haiti. My son
noticed a father begging him to come over.
The father indicated his little girl needed
to eat. My son ran down to the galley and
got some fruit and cookies for the little girl.
The little girl smiled so much. My son went
about doing his job but glanced back a few
minutes later. The father had taken the food
plate away from his daughter and was eat-
ing it. Tears were running down the little
girls face. Until they were off-loaded three
days later, my son ate all his meals with this
little girl. The United States is a very giving
country, but I think things are going to turn
very ugly if the Haitians began to riot and
throw food to the ground.
Adult volunteer accused
There is absolutely NO rehabilitation
for these pedophiles. There is no rehabbing
these monsters. It's only job justification for
psychiatrists that think they can rehab them
at the state's expense. No such thing and I'll
never believe that any psychiatrist has that
ability. They are born with this "imbalance"
and there's no fixing it. It sad for them and
their victims. And it should be only good
practice in ANY circumstance that there are
two adults with any children under the age
of 18. It's just good common sense that no
child be left alone, use the "buddy system,"
if you will. I myself included will not be alone
with my children's friends without my child
present or another adult. I wouldn't put
myself or that child in the position where
something could be misconstrued.
This can happen in any organization,
club, church, etc. Background checks can
be perfect with no indication of any prob-
lem, because these people can be very
smart and good about covering their tracks.
Parents should and must talk to their chil-
dren often. Having one talk is not enough.
The kids have to know that if anyone tries
to touch them in an inappropriate way they
say 'no,' get away and tell another adult.
And the kids have to know that if someone
tries something, it is not the child's fault.
From the articles I read, they had the
'buddy system' working here but it failed.
They had two kids there with one adult vol-
unteer who was supposed to drive them

home. But as bad luck would have it they
had the wrong three individuals together. It
would be great to have two adults present
at all times, but how realistic is that going
to be? It's hard enough to get one adult to
volunteer to be a coach, or a club volunteer
or a church youth group leader. How are
we going to find twice as many volunteers?
It is going to get to the point that the only
kids who will be able to participate in things
are those whose parents are willing to go to
every meeting, outing, event, etc. and stay
right there with the kids.
Drivers
I really think that requiring an annual
driving test for anyone over the age of 75
would be a good idea. As you get older, you
may not realize that your reactions have
slowed. Vision and hearing changes are
gradual. Some 90 year olds are better driv-
ers than the 40 year olds, and they could
easily pass the test. Some seniors just refuse
to admit they should stop driving and they
endanger not only themselves, but every-
one else on the road as well. I remember an
accident where an 90 year old man crashed
through a barrier and hit a stopped train --
and he said he just didn't see it.
I live in the southeast section of the
county and it is always a task trying to get
from home to work, work to home, or just
going to Publix and back. It seems that they
are in such a hurry to get somewhere, they
pull out and cut you off to drive 25 while the
speed limit is 50-55 and you are doing every
bit of it.
There are
times that
I have
had to
swerve to

der of
the road S
or liter-
ally stand
on my
brakes to
stop. It is ridiculous. It really gets under my
skin when there isn't a vehicle behind me
for miles, but they had to hurry up and cut
me off.
There has got to be some law against
speeding and passing someone, then apply-
ing brakes or making a turn within a fourth
of a mile, not signaling turns, and a whole
host of other infractions that at the least an-
noy other drivers and at the most are illegal.

Letters to the editor
Salvation Army says thanks
The Salvation Army of Okeechobee is still
a winner with the citizens of the Okeecho-
bee area.
This year Okeechobee did more with the
kettle drive than in 2008. Even with our poor
economy, Okeechobee did what was neces-
sary for our citizens who need our services.
Our business community supporters
gave from the heart even though their pock-
etbooks were low.
Of course we never have enough but we
all try to do our best. Now if you were un-
able to give to our kettle drive, contributions
are always accepted at the Okeechobee Sal-
vation Army, P.O. Box 1702, Okeechobee, FL
34973.
There were many volunteers that
manned the kettles and participated includ-
ing Okeechobee County Sheriff's Dept.,
Golden Corral Restaurant, Seminole Cove
Cuties Red Hat Ladies, Foxy Divas of Okee
Red Hat Ladies, Preferred Property Real Es-
tate, United Methodist Church Youth Group,
United Methodist Community Mission Group
members, Rotary Club of Okeechobee, Ki-
wanis Club of Okeechobee, George Dalp-
ert's Submarine Veterans group, Wemmer
Family Orthodontics, Nazarene Church, the
Gathering Church, Pristine Properties Real
Estate, Tucker Group Real Estate, Okeecho-
bee Christian Church, also Seacoast Nation-
al Bank for counting of the funds brought in.
We also want to thank the local businesses
for allowing the Salvation Army to place the
Red Kettle at their doors Golden Corral,
Walmart, Walgreens, Winn-Dixie, Publix,
U-Save, The Marketplace Flea Market, and
CVS.
Remember, next year we will need many
more groups to assist in this adventure of
giving relief to our Okeechobee needy.
Thank you Okeechobee!
Kip Gardner,
Chair, Bell Ringers
Asst. Patricia Hall, Salvation Army
Weeds vs. flowers
As a property owner in Okeechobee,
I am pleased to see that the code enforce-
ment has taken action on numerous prop-
erty code violations. It's a nice place to visit
but I have my doubts about ever wanting to
live here.
Okeechobee needs to make and keep
Okeechobee a nice place to live and to visit.
However, the code, law enforcement and
citizens efforts toward condemned struc-
tures, over growth, debris, and unlicensed
vehicles, needs to be directed toward the
eradication of the perverts, child molesters
and sexual predators that obviously have
found a welcome sign to Okeechobee, Flor-
ida.
For a one-horse town with two pages of
churches listed in the phone book, whisper-
ers, newspapers and court news is plagued
with the crime and violence. It seems to me
it's time for everyone sitting in those pews
to take a good look to their right and left
and not be blinded about what's going on
around them and start pulling predator, mo-
lester and pervert weeds so they don't grow
prolific in Okeechobee. Until that happens,
the weeds will keep sprouting and the flow-
ers won't grow.

YMCA possible for Okeechobee in near future
By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
In the near future the young people of
Okeechobee might be able to hang out at
a YMCA rather than at some of the unsuper-
vised places that are
now popular.
Teresa Chandler is
working to make that
dream a reality. She Ar o
and Brandon Tucker
were recently named
to the Board of Direc-
tors for YMCA of the
Treasure Coast and
will be working to
establish a YMCA in
Okeechobee. Teresa Chandler
"Our YMCA is
blessed to have both Teresa and Brandon
leading our efforts to expand YMCA pro-
grams and services in Okeechobee," said
John Lass, president and CEO for YMCA of
the Treasure Coast. "I have no doubt that the
children and families of Okeechobee will be
the ultimate beneficiaries of their leadership,
hard work and commitmentt"
Ms. Chandler credits her daughter, Allison
Chandler, with the idea for forming a YMCA.
Allison took on the cause of the YMCA as a
class project in her eighth grade gifted class.
The students each had to do a research pa-
per on some topic. Allison chose the YMCA.
Then her mother took up the cause.
A survey, conducted in July of 2009,
bears out the fact that there is much interest
in forming a YMCA. Of the 180 people sur-
veyed, 97 percent would like to see a YMCA
in Okeechobee, 87 percent would be willing
to become a member and 54 percent would
be willing to volunteer.
Most people who commented wanted
activities for the children of Okeechobee
that would keep them busy and safe with a
very low cost.
"This is something the community defi-
nitely needs," Ms. Chandler, asserted, noting
the high teen pregnancy rate in Okeecho-
bee. She said there is a high level of excite-
ment and everyone wants to help.
The first step is a feasibility study, which
will cost about $20,000 and takes from five
to six weeks. Mr. Lass said the reason for a
feasibility study is that while there is a lot of
enthusiasm locally, a feasibility study will
determine what activities can be sustained.
The study will have an outside party evaluate
the situation. More specifically, the study will
assess community needs in terms of health,
recreation, sports, childcare and youth pro-
gramming, the relative demand for a new
YMCA facility, identification and relative im-
portance of key programs and services that
should be included in a proposed YMCA fa-
cility as well as identification of community
partners.
To help with the cost of the feasibility
study Ms. Chandler is planning a YMCA Fun
Day in the Park on March 27 as a fundraiser.
Among other attractions, the event will fea-
ture a bounce house, dunk tank, motorcycle
show, swamp buggy show, open car show,
hula hoop contest, airboat show and a fire
truck demonstration. It will take place from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Flagler Park.
There are tentative plans for a summer
camp this year which would create an aware-
ness of YMCA. The directors and counselors
for the camp as well as for the permanent
YMCA staff would be hired locally.
The sports complex is being considered
as a possible site. There is already a swim-
ming pool and baseball diamonds. All that
would be necessary is a building.
Once the program is established, about
80 percent of the operating expenses would
come from memberships and program rev-
enues and the remainder would come from
various types of fundraisers.
The mission of the YMCA is to put Chris-
tian principles into practice through pro-
grams that build healthy spirit, mind and
body for all.

Economic Council celebrates milestones

Milestones of progress were recognized as
the Economic Council of Okeechobee held
its Twentieth Anniversary Celebration Satur-
day, Jan. 16 at Pine Creek Sporting Club.
What is now the Economic Council
started as a slow process with a group of
businessmen meeting for breakfast and
discussing the problems of city and county
government, according to founding member
Ed Walpole. He said the county was hard hit

caused the loss of 800 jobs directly and in-

directly and the loss of millions of dollars in
local sales.
In 1989 what is now known as the Eco-
nomic Council of Okeechobee was formed
as the Business Council of Okeechobee.
"Frank Marsocci was the heart and soul of
the organization," stated Mr. Walpole.
"It's been a long 20 years," said Sonny
Williamson, another of the founders. He
noted that in the beginning there was little
interest in attracting new industry to the
area. As examples of progress promoted by
the Economic Council he cited the establish-
ment of the administrative form of county
government and the establishment of the
Okeechobee Utility Authority.
In spite of great progress Mr. Williamson
said we still face some of the same prob-
lems.
"We have vision, but a lot left to do," he
said.
"Communicate, communicate, state your
purpose, communicate," Mr. Williamson ad-
monished.
U.S. Representative Tom Rooney's staff
member Stephen Leighton mentioned bills
written in response to the legislative delega-
tion meeting in December.
"Whatever else you need we are here to
listen," he said.
"My mission is to recharge Florida's econ-
omy," said State Representative Mike Horner.
He said a "heaping slice of credit" was due
to the Economic Council for their work in
boosting the economy. He stated that be-
cause of the work of the Economic Council
the Florida Department of Transportation
was planing to expand the S.R. 70 and U.S.
441 intersection. He compared that victory to
winning the Super Bowl.
"Go out and win another victory," Mr.
Horner urged. Commissioner Joey Hoover
said that all the economic council's projects
were completed without bailout money.
"Robbie would have been proud to be
with us today," he said of his late brother
who was on the first board of directors.
Mr. Hoover spoke of the importance of
citizen participation.
"Government produces positive results
when citizens participate."
"We're here to remember a group of men
and women who had a vision," he said of the
founding members.
"We look forward to the future with a re-
newed sense of purpose," said board mem-
ber Elizabeth Maxwell.
Plaques were presented to original board
members Sonny Williamson, Ed Walpole,
Phil Berger, Gil Culbreth, Tom Hebel, Joe
Mullins, Bobby Tucker, and Frank Altobello.

Join The Pit Crew for a family fun night
of Moonlight Bowling and bid in the Silent
Auction.
If you haven't had an opportunity yet to
visit the new Lucky Lanes, formerly known
as Stardust Lanes, Jan. 22, is the time to go
see the changes and also raise money for an
excellent cause.
The Pit Crew, an Okeechobee team in
the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
fundraising event, is partnering with Lucky
Lanes to hold Moonlight Bowling and a si-
lent auction, as well as selling chances to
win a gun safe, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. on
January 22.
J.P. Desrocher, new owner of Lucky
Lanes, is pleased to partner with the Pit Crew
to offer this fun event for the entire family.
First round sign-ups are from 6 p.m. until
6:30 p.m. with bowling for one hour until
7:30 p.m. Second round sign-ups begin at 7
p.m. and bowling is for one hour until 8:30
p.m. Four players are allowed per lane at a
cost of $10 per person 13 and over, $5 for 12
and under or $25 for a family including two
adults and three children. Shoe rentals are
free and all proceeds from this event will be
donated to the American Cancer Society.
In addition to the Moonlight Bowling, a
silent auction for a wide variety of goods and
services donated by local businesses will be
held from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The highest
bid wins each auction item and the winners
need not be present in order to win. The Pit
Crew also will be on hand to sell chances
to win a Sentry 24-gun Fire Safe combina-
tion lock safe. This safe has a retail value of
$1,240, yet opportunities to own the safe are
available for only $2 each, or six for $10. The
drawing for the gun safe will happen at the
Relay for Life event on Feb. 26, 2010.
Lucky Lanes is located at 1465 US Hwy.
441 S.E. in Okeechobee. The American Can-
cer Society's Relay for Life event will be held
on Feb. 26 at the Okeechobee Agri-Civic
Center. The American Cancer Society Relay
For Life is a life-changing event that gives ev-
eryone in communities across the globe a
chance to celebrate the lives of people who
have battled cancer, remember loved ones
lost, and fight back against the disease. At
Relay, teams of people camp out at a local
high school, park, or fairground and take
turns walking or running around a track or
path. Each team is asked to have a repre-
sentative on the track at all times during the
event. Because cancer never sleeps, relays
are overnight events and 18 hours in length.

Tewksbury signs with Tallahassee Community College
By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News
Cameron Tewksbury signed to play col-
lege baseball Monday night and will play in
the shadow of where he would ultimately
like to end up, Florida State University.
Tewksbury signed to become an Eagle at
Tallahassee Community College, a member
of the Panhandle Conference, and a tradi-
tionally solid baseball program.
Tewksbury went on a visit to Florida State
last fall and Coaches there referred him to
the nearby Community College. Instead
of being discouraged Tewksbury said he's
looked at it as an opportunity, "The main
thing I need to work on is my velocity and
gain a few miles per hour and also work on
my command. That's what I need to get to
FSU."
Tewksbury, a left hander, has also de-
voted the off season to baseball. He played
American Legion ball in Ft. Pierce and also
travel ball in Fort Myers this off season. He
admits he's also bigger and stronger than
last year. He expects his senior year in high
school to be memorable.
"It's looking good this year. The focus
here is on winning and hopefully we can all
say on the same page this year," he said.
Tewksbury has been a three-year starter
for the Brahmans at pitcher, first base and
the outfield. The team won the district
championship last year and has high hopes
to do even better this year.
His parents were also excited about their
son's decision. His mom Linda said both

her twin sons have talked about playing col-
lege baseball for a long time, "We are very
excited for him. He has worked very hard.
He's become more confident in his ability to
pitch, and doesn't get upset. He just does his
job. We are very proud of him."
His father Harry Tewksbury played at
Okeechobee High School and taught the
fundamentals of the game he loves to his
twin sons, Cameron and Adam, a catcher.
He said Cameron learned the fundamentals
of baseball easily and has always worked
hard to improve.
"A lot of the credit goes to them for the
way they've handled it and gone after it," he
added. Both parents said they are glad their
sons can use baseball to get a college edu-
cation.
Brahman Coach Dylan Tedders was very
complimentary of Cameron's ability on and
off the field. He said a lot of colleges showed

interest in him and would have loved to have
signed him.
"He loves the area up there, dreams
about going to FSU, and I'm pumped up for
him."
Tedders predicted big things from Tewks-
bury during his senior year. He said another
college signee Jonathan Crawford and Cam-
eron will have a friendly battle to become
the Brahmans number one pitcher. "Cam-
eron just goes out there and wins. He makes
everyone around him better."

said Cameron is like another coach on the
field because he works hard and plays with
fire, "That tends to encourage teammates to
work and play harder. He's an asset for us. It
gives us what he has, and he's always think-
ing about ways to get better. That kid is a
winner."
Tewksbury said he'll work on his slider
this year and intends to keep on pitching his
way to the top, "I'm hoping to be able to go
there, get in the rotation, help them out and
repeat as conference champions."

Boys soccer loses senior night contest
By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News
A late foul call by the referees gave Port
St. Lucie a golden opportunity to score and
Matt Steiner took advantage as Port St. Lu-
cie upset Okeechobee 3-2 to ruin the boys
soccer teams senior night celebration Friday
night.
Sean Manning and William Daugherty
had goals for PSL (7-7-3) who seek to have
their first winning season in 14 years.
Okeechobee (11-6) lost for the second
time in a row and were left to ponder if
they can recapture the magic they had in a
10 game match winning streak earlier this
year.
"It was good hard soccer, I like watching
that kind of soccer," Brahman Coach Lon-
nie Sears said, "I hate to talk about referees
but I'm sick of Okeechobee getting the short
end of the stick every time. I stand up for
my kids. They deserve a fair shake and they
never get it (from refs)."
Sears said his team played a decent game
but didn't take advantage of their opportuni-
ties to score. Marcos Fonseca and Oscar Gar-
cia had goals for Okeechobee. Basilio Ruiz
had four saves in the Brahman net.
"We had too much standing around. We
made a mistake at our net and we can't do
that. We're better than that," Sears said.
Eight seniors were honored at halftime
for their contributions to the soccer pro-
gram. Graduating this year are Eddie Guerre-
ro, Daniel Flores, Chris Spruhl, Basilio Ruiz,
Roger Duke, Adrian Leon, Ricardo Herrera,
and Oscar Garcia.
Sears said his seniors were pumped up
and wanted to win this game, "It was defi-
nitely disappointing to them. Port St. Lucie is
a good team, they're undisciplined which I
don't like, but they had a lot of talented play-
ers."
Sears said the late foul was really a clean
play as a Brahman player appeared to steal
the ball from the Jaguar player and was then
tripped up.
"Referees just don't understand the game
sometimes, that wasn't a foul. It makes me
sick. I get tired of seeing that," Sears added.
Okeechobee travelled to John Carroll on
Tuesday to end their regular season.

OHS boys basketball loses to Jensen Beach
By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News
Alex Thompson and Sherrod Huntley
both scored 24 points as Jensen Beach de-
feated Okeechobee High School 76-64 Friday
night in boys basketball action at Okeecho-
bee High School.
Jensen Beach was able to build a double
digit lead in the first half and led by a cornm-
fortable margin in the second half in a high
paced, high intensity game.
Huntley said he tried to do what he could
for his teammates, "It was a big district
game. I had to do something, and had to do
well on offense. I got a lot of steals and re-
bounds."
Huntley's speed was a decisive factor as
he pushed the ball at will and got his team-
mates the ball in locations where they could
score. Thompson and others shot a very
high percentage in the game.
"I was proud that we didn't give up,"
Brahmans Coach Bryan Van Camp said,
"The effort was great in the fourth quarter
and we outscored them. It was the best run
we made but it wasn't enough."
Jensen built a 22-14 lead after the first
quarter and pushed the advantage up to 15
points before halftime.
Jensen built the lead to 22 points in the
third quarter before Okeechobee responded
with a nice rally down the stretch.
Huntley said his team was motivated be-
cause they want to secure the second seed
for next month's district tournament. He
said his team thinks they can win the cham-
pionship.
"We're going take it all the way this year,"
he added.
Duelle Gore had 15 points, five blocks,
and a dozen rebounds for Okeechobee.
Jonathan Hudoff had one of his best games
of the year with 13 points. Matt Skipper had
eight points for the Brahmans (8-7).
Coach Van Camp said Jensen Beach (7-8),
has been playing well and they deserved this
victory, "We had a couple of chances to cut
into their lead but they were quick, good in
the open floor and they really capitalized
on their chances tonight. They didn't miss
many."
Okeechobee will play Jensen Beach
again on Jan. 29, in Jensen.

Southern
Open won
by Alabama
angler
By Charles Murphy
Okeechobee News
Chris Lane won the Bassmaster Southern
Open on Lake Okeechobee last weekend as
he hauled in just over 41 pounds of fish dur-
ing the three day event.
Four hundred anglers took to the waters
of Lake Okeechobee on Thursday and Fri-
day and the field was cut to the top 30 on
Saturday.
Lane won the tournament four years ago
as well.
Steve Fairtrace of Okeechobee was the
top local angler as he finished in 30th place.
Bobby Lane of Lakeland finished sec-
ond and Terry Scroggins of Palatka finished
third.
The fishing tournament had a huge eco-
nomic impact on Okeechobee according
to the Okeechobee Tourist Development
Council.
Anglers had to deal with colder than nor-
mal temperatures during the first two days.
Bag limits were scarce on Thursday and
Friday but weights did pick up considerably
across the board on Saturday.
Blake Stewart of Alabama won the co-
angler division. Aaron Gengler of Lakeland
finished second.
Good crowds were reported for the daily
weigh-in held at the Scott Driver Boat ramp
in Okeechobee.
