The "World Famous"

a classical presentation of

Old train depot
restoration movement
plans slow down

By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
A topic that aroused a lot of
public opinion in 2008 was restora-
tion of Okeechobee's train depot.
It would have been used as a pas-
senger depot for the two passenger
trains that stop here each day as
well as office space of Okeecho-
bee Main Street. Public opinion ran
high and many people made calls
to CSX Transportation, the owner
of the building. There were nego-
tiations between the city and CSX.
City officials also met with Amtrak
officials, who operate the passen-
ger trains serving Okeechobee.
Amtrak officials expressed a will-
ingness to help with restoration.
Grant funds may also be available
for other sources.
This year there has been little
public activity concerning the
building. According to city man-
ager Brian Whitehall, the current
holdup is insurance. He said that
CSX is requiring liability insurance.
With the building being staffed by
volunteers, Mr. Whitehall said it
would not be feasible to pay insur-
ance.
The eastern end of the building,
which once housed the passenger
waiting room has been unused
and boarded up for some time.

The Lipizzan is a rare and unique breed;
its history and culture is known worldwide.
The Walt Disney movie "The Miracle of the
White Stallions," depicting General George
S. Patton saving them at the end of World
War II from certain extinction, created an
even greater worldwide interest in the Lip-
izzaner breed. Had it not been for Patton,
there would be no Lipizzans today.

The "Pas de Trois" is a series of maneuvers involving three horses. The precise
movements, set to music, are like a dance on horseback.

The western end, which was originally used
for shipping freight, had been used for a feed
business until some time last year.
The building, which was once in danger
of demolition, appears to be in good shape.
"It is very solid and can be fixed very eas-
ily," stated city engineer Oscar Bermudez.
The roof over the waiting room would
have to be replaced because the ceiling
has fallen in several places indicating leaks.
However, the floors are concrete and the
walls are block construction so there is no
water damage to the walls or floors.
A fireplace flanked by windows domi-
nates the east side of the waiting room.
Doors on the north and south sides give ac-
cess to the street and to the track. Restrooms
adjoin the waiting room. Behind a frosted
glass window is the ticket booth which is
not accessible from the waiting room.
The depot was built in 1924 for the
Florida, Western & Northern Railroad, a
subsidiary of the Seaboard Airline Railway.

The building was built in the Mediterranean
Revival architecture style that was popular in
the 1920s. Okeechobee's city hall and court-
house are also built in that same style.
The depot was designed by the archi-
tectural firm of Henry Stephen Harvey and
Louis Phillips Clark. These same architects
designed the depots in at Deerfield Beach
and Delray Beach. Both of those structures
are listed in the National Registry of Historic
Places. They also designed the Palm Beach
Town Hall and Fire Station.
The importance of the railroad to
Okeechobee is indicated by the fact that
in 1926 the Okeechobee News carried this
caption in large letter across the bottom of
the front page: "South Florida's Chicago -
Okeechobee the highway, railway and wa-
terway center."
In fact the City of Okeechobee owes its
existence to the railroad. In 1912 the Florida
East Coast Railroad formed the Model Land
Company which laid out the plat for the City
of Okeechobee. Flagler Park is named af-
ter railroad baron Henry Flagler. The main
north-south street, Parrott Avenue, is named

Thieves take advantage of unlocked cars

By Eric Kopp
Okeechobee News
For some reason people refuse to lock
their car doors and, consequently, they are
losing their valuables.
Detective Ted Van Deman, of the
Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office
(OCSO), said there have been at least 15 ve-
hicle burglaries in the northwest section of
the county recently, and that all could have
been avoided.
"All of the vehicles were unlocked," he
said Wednesday, Dec. 30.
The detective said thieves are simplywalk-
ing through neighborhoods and checking
the doors on parked vehicles. Once they find
an unlocked vehicle, they simply open the
door and take what they want. The thieves

are taking cash, cameras, cell phones, com-
pact discs, purses -- anything of value.
"We know there are a lot more burglaries
than that but they just haven't been report-
ed," said Detective Van Deman. "They're
(the thieves) walking from house to house
-- right through people's yards."
He said most of the thefts are occurring
late at night -- sometime after midnight.
The detective then offered these simple
suggestions to avoid losing your valuables:
Make doubly sure all of your vehicle's
doors are locked.
Whenever possible, remove all your
valuables from your vehicle.
If it's not feasible to remove your valu-
ables, store them where they can't be seen.
Should you see or hear someone

some of the discussions currently tak-
ing place. Thanks for participating!

Exploitation
The story in last Sunday's paper about
exploitation of the elderly is something ev-
eryone who has elderly relatives should
think about. Many of these older folks still
want to be independent, but it is easy for
con artists to take advantage of them. And
too often, the person who takes advantage
is a family member. The suggestion to have
an accountant do an annual audit of the el-
derly person's finances is an excellent one.
It is so sad that in today's society peo-
ple do not take care of their elderly relatives.
That is why it is so easy for others to prey on
the elderly and steal from them. If the old
person's children and grandchildren were
taking care of them and checking on them,
they would not be at such risk.

Congress
Honestly, is there anyone out there
who is as disgusted with our congressional
representatives as I am? When did bribery
become such an open part of passing legis-
lation? Who is being represented? Surely,
not the people, the majority of whom are
against what Congress is doing in Wash-
ington in the middle of the night. Can 2010
come soon enough? It seems now that
Obama is a one termer, and may not even
seek the nomination in 2012 that will go to
Hillary. Heaven help us all.
What do you do when your govern-
ment is made up of traitors who spit on the
Bill of Rights? I know what George Washing-
ton would do if he were alive.

Resolutions
What's your New Year's Resolution?
Resolution # 1 Don't make resolu-
tions. You won't keep them anyway.
As we start a new year in Okeechobee,
I wish we could focus on what we can do to
improve our community instead of always
complaining about what is wrong.

A new beginning
Will Christmas '09 be remembered
as the time Americans made the greatest
change in the country's history? I don't
mean that Healthcare is that great change.
What I mean is that because of the way
Healthcare has been passed, could this be
the beginning of the time when Americans
begin reclaiming their country?
So the closed back room deals hidden
from view, the blatant buying of votes and
the exorbitant bribing is the way you think
we, as a country, should be going?
I don't think it will be the beginning of
the time when Americans will be reclaim-
ing our country, but it may well be the time
when we look back after it's too late and
wish we did!

A sad 'thank you'
I have an odd thank you to convey. Our
dog was struck and killed Thursday night
around 8 p.m. on Berman Road. I wanted
to say a heartfelt thank you to the young
man. I know you didn't mean to hit her, and
it wasn't your fault she was in the road, but
I just want you to know that I truly admire
the fact that you came to my door to say you
were sorry. So many people just drive off,
not caring that there may be a family who
loves that animal. So, truly, from the bottom
of my heart, thank you for caring enough to
let us know so she wasn't just lying there
in the road on Christmas morning for us to
find.

Turn off the cell phone
The use of cell phones is just out of
hand. Some people can't seem to do any-
thing without the phone attached to their
ear. It is terrible when they are driving as it
endangers everyone on the road. But the
distraction of the cell phone is annoying at
other times too. The other day I was in line
for the self-checkout lane at a local store.
The woman in front of me was busy talk-
ing on the phone, so she only had one hand
free to scan in her purchases. Not only was
she annoying all those in line behind her by
moving so slowly through the checkout, but
she was also completely ignoring her tod-
dler who nearly fell out of the cart. It was a
good thing strangers were there to keep the
child from being hurt as mom was so busy
chatting that she didn't even notice.

Thanks for support
The Kiwanis Club of Okeechobee would
like to express our gratitude toward our gen-
erous community for making our annual
radio auction fundraiser a success, despite
the troubled economy. We'd like to begin by
apologizing if we miss anyone as we try to
recount all the people and businesses who
contributed to our event. We raised a record
amount in three hours on Saturday, Dec.
12, during our Radio Auction; but we could
not have done it without Billy Dean and the
wonderful management at WOKC. Your help
with pre-event promotions and airtime for
the auction itself is priceless. Also Riverside
Bank graciously allowed the Kiwanis Club
to use their facility to house our auction and
your staff was so accommodating. Waste
Management's Okeechobee Landfill spon-
sorship of our Pennysaver advertisement,
which previewed the auction items, helped
us keep our overhead low. Thank you to
the Law Office of Gerald Lefebvre, Riverside
Bank, Pritchard Insurance and the Chamber
of Commerce for promoting our event on
your marquees. Greg at Jersey Mike's, we
appreciate the delicious subs you sent over
for our volunteers-thanks so much. A spe-
cial thank you to the Okeechobee County
Sheriff's Office for their support.

Adaptation and mitigation motivate wildlife managers

By Patricia Behnke
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission
Despite some of the drama that emerged
during the United Nations Climate Change
Conference in Copenhagen in December,
the leaders of the world's major polluters
Brazil, India, China, South Africa and the
United States agreed on a compromise
with a nonbinding agreement. Some thought
the agreement a good step; others were not
so sure. German Chancellor Angela Merkel
told the media that the outcome in Copen-
hagen was a first step toward a "new world
climate order, nothing more but also noth-
ing less." That seems to be the consensus
among many of the 193 nations represented
at the summit.
The accord states that greenhouse gas
emissions must be reduced enough to pre-
vent average global temperatures from ris-
ing more than 2 degrees Celsius. It is a major
accomplishment to have such disparate na-
tions agreeing that something must be done
and giving it a name. It is now up to the folks
on the ground to do the real work on miti-
gating climate change impacts while adapt-
ing to those changes already in place.

Florida's Lifeline
The number of Floridians who benefit
from the Lifeline Assistance program grew
by 236 percent this year, according to the
Florida Public Service Commission's (PSC)
Annual Lifeline Report. The Lifeline program
makes telephone service more affordable
for low-income residents.
"I am happy that more Florida residents
are signing up for Lifeline and staying con-
nected to family, as well as to vital commu-
nity services," said Matthew M. Carter II, PSC
Chairman. "Our efforts to make sure that no
one remains phoneless in Florida are reap-
ing results."
As of June 30, 2009, 618,774 eligible resi-
dents participated in the Lifeline program, an
increase of more than 434,800 participants
over the previous year. In its 2009 report sent
to the Governor and the Legislature, the PSC
attributed increased Lifeline participation
to the automatic enrollment process initi-
ated in April 2007 by the PSC and Florida's
Department of Children and Families and
to the significant enrollment of new Lifeline
customers by SafeLink, a prepaid wireless
phone provider.
Under the federal Lifeline program, tele-
phone customers who participate in certain
public assistance programs are entitled to
receive a basic telephone service discount of
at least $13.50 per month, a savings of $162
per year. Link-Up Florida (Link-Up) provides
a 50 percent reduction in the telephone ser-
vice installation charge, up to a maximum
of $30, for qualifying households that do not
currently have telephone service.
Chairman Carter said, "The PSC contin-
ues to work with telephone companies, the
Office of Public Counsel, and many other
groups to promote Link-Up and Lifeline,
and we hope in 2010 people will continue to
help us spread the word about these benefi-
cial programs."

As I sift through the reports from across
the sea, I ponder what it all means in terms
of Florida and wildlife in particular. The
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Com-
mission's (FWC) climate change working
groups are weighing the strategies that fall
into two categories: adaptation or mitiga-
tion, or maybe both.
"For a long time we've been discuss-
ing everything in terms of adaptation," said
Doug Parsons, FWC's climate change coor-
dinator. "But we also are involved in mitiga-
tion activities whenever we take degraded or
destroyed habitat and bring it back to a state
that will sustain wildlife."
Any habitat that brings back life in and of
itself is contributing to the lessening of car-
bon emissions. In Florida, we're doing this
as a natural part of wildlife management.
"Doing what we know is healthy for wild-
life and habitat means we are doing what is
healthy for humans as well," Parsons said.
"Even though the scientists agree that cli-
mate change is a reality, when we manage
for resilience and adaptation, we are making
wise choices for our future as residents of
Florida."
Adaptation goes along with the belief that
climate change is beyond changing all we

can do is make the best of the situation. The
strategies that help wildlife adapt to a chang-
ing climate include such things as creating
connectivity between habitats and providing
corridors for wildlife to travel. Anticipating
the fluctuation of the human population
moving inland also is crucial to helping
both humans and wildlife adapt. I received
an e-mail the other day from someone who
wrote, "Why are we worrying about the
wildlife when humans are going to be hav-
ing an equally hard time adapting?"
It's something I hear frequently. And the
answer lies in our connection with wildlife.
If native wildlife disappears, if habitats be-
come unhealthy, if seas cover what is now
livable land, there is not much hope for
healthy humans either, unless we work now
to adapt. We will be impacted physically,
environmentally, socially and economically.
The depletion of native wildlife will have re-
verberations across the whole spectrum of
human existence.
As the world's nations came together to
look at the big picture, others are already
at work making good management deci-
sions. A partnership between four states in
the southeastern United States will assist
with adaptability, while mitigating the ef-

enrollment see dramatic increase

cludes participation in at least one of these
programs: Temporary Cash Assistance,
Food Stamps, Medicaid, Low-Income Home
Energy Assistance Program, Supplemental
Security Income, Federal Public Housing
Assistance (Section 8), and National School
Lunch Program's free lunch program. A
family whose income is at or below 150 per-
cent of the federal poverty level guidelines
may also qualify. For a family of four, this re-
quirement is a maximum monthly income
of $2,756.
Applying for Lifeline is easy. Florida resi-
dents may call their local phone company,
the PSC at 1-800-342-3552, or the Office of

Public Counsel at 1-800-540-7-039 for assis-
tance. Information is also available at www.
floridapsc.com and www.floridaopc.gov/
lifeline.cfm.
The PSC is committed to making sure that
Florida's consumers receive their electric,
natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewa-
ter services in a safe, affordable, and reliable
manner. The PSC exercises regulatory au-
thority over utilities in the areas of rate base/
economic regulation; competitive market
oversight; and monitoring of safety, reliabil-
ity, and service.

fects of carbon emissions. The FWC, along
with agencies from Alabama, Georgia and
South Carolina, received grant money from
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to increase
the quality, quantity and connectivity of pri-
ority sandhill sites in the four states. More
than 38,500 acres of sandhill habitat will be
restored through prescribed fire, removal of
vegetation not conducive to the habitat and
the replanting of longleaf pine. This habitat
improvement will be welcoming to species
such as gopher tortoises and native bird spe-
cies.
In addition, Florida and Alabama are
working together, along with The Nature
Conservancy, to create a natural corridor,
which will assist wildlife as they adapt to cli-
mate change by moving to climates that are
more hospitable.
This project represents one of the best
examples of adaptation and mitigation by
providing healthy habitat that will sequester
carbon emissions rather than disperse them
into the atmosphere.
"By using appropriate management to re-
store habitat quality and connectivity, we're
adding to the resiliency of Florida's wildlife,"
said Anna Farmer, FWC biologist and co-
author of the grant. "This will ensure that
during climate change, Florida's wildlife will
be able to weather the storm."
It may not be on the world stage, but
it is conservation at its best, right where it
counts.

SFWMD to reserve water for St. Lucie River

WEST PALM BEACH The South Flor-
ida Water Management District (SFWMD)
Governing Board recently approved moving
forward with the public rule-making pro-
cess to reserve water for the protection of
fish and wildlife within the North Fork of the
St. Lucie River and in support of Indian River
Lagoon restoration.
"Our community was built around the
unique lifestyle offered by the St. Lucie River,
and we rely on its health for everything from
renowned recreational opportunities to eco-
nomic well-being," said SFWMD Governing
Board member Kevin Powers, who repre-
sents the Treasure Coast. "Protecting this
vital resource depends on the right amount
of water, and we are working toward guar-
anteeing the ecosystem will have the clean
water it requires."
A water reservation is a legal mechanism
to set aside water for the protection of fish
and wildlife or public health and safety as
set forth in Section 373.223(4) of the Flori-
da Statutes. When a water reservation is in
place, volumes and timing of water at spe-
cific locations are protected for the natural
system ahead of consumptive uses, such as
new development.
"As part of this ongoing reservation effort,
the District has hosted six public workshops
since April 2009 to share information and
gather input from interested stakeholders
to guide rule development," said Kenneth
Ammon, PE., SFWMD Deputy Executive Di-
rector of Everglades Restoration and Capital
Projects. "This is an important component
in ensuring the success of restoration of the
St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon."
Along with providing immense benefits to
the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, the wa-
ter reservation is also necessary for the U.S.

Army Corps of Engineers to proceed with
construction activities on the Indian River
Lagoon South project, a key component of
the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration
Plan (CERP). One of the components of the
Indian River Lagoon South project involves
redirecting water from the C-23 and C-24
canals, located in Martin and St. Lucie coun-
ties, to be stored in two new reservoirs and
cleaned in treatment wetlands to improve
water quality and water supply for the North
Fork. These canals provide flood protection
but by doing so also impact the greater eco-
system by draining into the St. Lucie Estuary
and Indian River Lagoon.
The St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River La-
goon are home to more than 4,000 species,
including 35 species listed as endangered or
threatened, making it the most diverse es-
tuarine environment in North America. The
lagoon supports a multitude of industries
and activities, from fishing and recreation to
tourism and agriculture. A study concluded
that the economic benefits of the Indian
River Lagoon totaled more than $3.7 billion
in 2007 alone.
The North Fork water reservation is the
second of its kind in Florida. The first water
reservation for America's Everglades was
adopted for the protection of the Picayune
Strand, Fakahatchee Estuary and related
ecosystems and wildlife on Florida's south-
west coast for decades to come. Approved
by the Governing Board in February 2009,
the first water reservation allowed the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers to continue con-
struction on the Picayune Strand restoration
project, which is designed to restore surface
water flow to vital wetlands to ensure that
plants and animals thrive, including the en-
dangered Florida panther, and to improve

Refinery spokesperson John Miller.
"The gold and silver markets have
not been this strong for over 30 years"
said Miller. Typically when the U.S.
dollar is weak and the economy is flat
gold and silver markets soar. "That's
good news if you are setting on a few
gold necklaces or an old class ring"
says Miller.
Starting Tuesday at 9am and
every day this week through
Saturday the Ohio Valley Refinery
is setting up a satellite refinery right
here in Okeechobee at the Holiday
Inn Express. During their 5 day
stay anyone can bring gold, silver or
platinum items and turn them in for
immediate payment, explains John
Miller. "Just about everybody has
some amount of gold or silver just
lying around collecting dust and this
week anybody can sell theirs direct to
our refinery. Typically selling direct
to a refinery is reserved for larger
wholesale customers like jewelry
stores, pawn shops, and laboratories"
says Miller. "We are changing
how business is done" he explains
"we want to do business with
everybody so we took our business
to the streets". "Our teams visits
various cities around the country
hosting 5 day events allowing the
general public to take advantage of
our services. The turnout has been
overwhelming" says Miller. "Usually
each day is busier than the previous
day. It seems once people come to
us and sell something they are so
amazed what an old ring or gold
coin is worth they go home and start
digging around for more and telling
relatives, friends and neighbors. It's
like a feeding frenzy by the third
day. People line up with everything
from gold jewelry to sterling silver
flatware sets to old coins. I think
during this bad economy everybody
can use extra money but most people
say they are taking advantage of
selling direct to our refinery because
of the higher prices we pay".
During this special event

Above: Refinery representatives will be on hand starting Tuesday through Saturday to purchase all gold,
silver and platinum items, as well as coins. Public welcome!

anyone is welcome to bring all types
of gold, silver and platinum to the
refinery and turn it in for instant
payment. The types of items they will
accept include all gold jewelry, gold
coins, gold ounces, dental gold, old
coins made before 1965 including
Silver Dollars, halves, quarters and
dimes, anything marked "sterling"
including flat ware sets, tea pots,
silver bars, silver ounces and all
industrial precious metals.
What should you expect if you go
to the event to sell your gold and/or
silver? Just gather up all gold silver
and platinum in any form. If you are
not sure if its gold or silver bring it in
and they will test it for free. When you
arrive at the event you will be asked to
fill out a simple registration card and
will be issued a number. Seating will
be available. When your number is
called you will be escorted to a table
where your items will be examined,
tested and sorted. This only takes
a few minutes using their expertise
and specialized equipment. Items
will be counted and/or weighed. The
value of the items will be determined
based on up to the minute market
prices. Live feeds will be available at
the event displaying current market
prices of all precious metals. If you
choose to sell your items they will
be bagged and tagged and you will
be escorted to the cashier to collect
your payment. Waiting time to sell

your items may range from just a few
minutes to 1 hour so bring something
to read.
If you are the owner of a jewelry
store, pawn shop, dentist office or
a dealer you are encouraged to call
ahead to make an appointment with
the smelt master to discuss their
special dealer programs. They can
be reached at (863) 357-3529.

Local women charged

with grand theft

By Eric Kopp
Okeechobee News
VERO BEACH-Two Okeechobee
women were arrested at a Vero Beach
store after they reportedly tried to steal
items valued at over $300.
Kelly Ann Barnes, 47, N.E. 342nd Trail,
and Sharon Marie Fralix, 37, U.S. 441, were
both arrested Saturday, Dec. 26, on one
count of grand theft. Both women were
booked into the Indian River County Jail,
then released Sunday, Dec. 27, after post-
ing bond of $2,500 each.
According to Indian River County Sher-

iff's Office (IRCSO) arrest affidavits the
women were arrested at the Bealls Depart-
ment Store, 5900 20th St.
An arrest affidavit states that store sur-
veillance video showed Barnes removing a
sales ticket from a jacket she was wearing.
She could also be seen taking other mer-
chandise on the video, the affidavit contin-
ued.
The affidavit goes on to state that a
Bealls security officer watched Fralix take
some clothing, two bracelets and a toe
ring.
The total price of all the items was
$322.61, the report added.

Safety tips reduce fire danger

Winter brings with it the opportunity to
decorate in creative ways using candles, elec-
tric lights and the chance to finally start cozy
fires in unused fireplaces. The unfortunate con-
sequence is that winter is also a prime time for
fire-related injuries, property damage and even
deaths. Trusted Choice spokespeople can
help families prepare for fire risks and hazards
that may come during the winter months.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration,
in 2008 alone, more than 3,000 people died in
2008 from fires and more than 16,000 were in-
jured.
Fire safety tips:
Avoid using lit candles. If you do use them,
make sure they are in stable holders and place
them where they cannot be easily knocked
down, out of the reach of children.
Never leave a home or room with candles
burning.
Install a smoke alarm on every level of
your home. Test the batteries every month and
change them at least once a year.
Have your chimney, chimney vent and
flue cleaned and inspected annually.
Never burn trash, painted or pressure-
treated wood inside the home.
Never use gasoline or other alternative fu-
els in a kerosene heater.
Cooking is the leading cause of home
fires. Never leave food cooking unattended and
keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen at all
times.

Is your Christmas tree still up? A dry tree
in the house is kindling for a fire. A tree should
never be placed close to a heat source, includ-
ing a fireplace or a heat vent. The heat will dry
out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited
by heat, flame or sparks. Keep fresh trees wa-
tered. When a Christmas tree becomes dry,
promptly discard it.
Inspect decorative lights each year for
frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation,
broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kink-
ing or wear before putting them up. Inspect
them again when you take them down. Do not
leave lit decorative lights unattended and only
use UL approved lighting.
Do not overload outlets. Connect strings
of lights to an extension cord before plugging
the cord into the outlet.
Never put tree branches or needles in a
fireplace or wood-burning stove.
Check on older adults and help them in-
spect their homes. Older people are at higher
risk of injury from fires and are also more likely
to die in fires than those in other ages groups of
fire-related injuries.
Keeping warm
Never leave fireplaces, woodstoves or
space heaters unattended. Always use extreme
caution with auxiliary heat sources.
Have the heating system serviced. Furnac-
es, boilers and chimneys should be serviced
at least once a year to prevent fire and smoke
damage.

OHS loses in Holiday Tournament

By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News
Okeechobee High School's magic ended at
the boys basketball Taveniere holiday tourna-
ment at Sebring high school Tuesday with a 65-
54 loss to Parkway Academy of Miramar.
Christian Johnson hit a game opening three
pointer and didn't stop shooting and scoring,
as he had a 22 points to lead Parkway to the
victory.
Okeechobee traded baskets with Parkway
for much of the game. A 15-2 run at the end
of the third quarter proved to be the difference
for Parkway.
"You set the tempo, you're going to win the
game," Johnson said, "During the third quarter
Okeechobee let us take over the tempo and
they gave the game away. This is like the best
game we've played since the beginning of the
year."
Johnson praised Okeechobee for their dis-
cipline but said Parkway's athleticism took
over the game.
Okeechobee held their own in the first half
as they used the energy they gained from an
upset win over Lakeland on Monday. A nice
running layup by Austin Willard gave Okeecho-
bee a 7-3 early lead. Johnson answered with a
three pointer and Parkway went on a 14-5 run
to end the first quarter. Parkway led 17-12 at
the end of the first.
Parkway used their superior speed and ath-
leticism to limit Okeechobee's easy scoring op-
portunities. Brahman Coach Bryan Van Camp
said that was a big factor in the game. "They
were much quicker and much more physical.

We didn't get the easy transition points that we
got yesterday. They did a nice job."
A three point basket by Willard and an in-
side bucket by Duelle Gore kept Okeechobee
close in the second quarter. A nice scoop by
Troy Harper gave Okeechobee a 26-25 lead late
in the half. Parkway led at the half 28-27.
The third quarter proved to be the differ-
ence as Parkway outscored Okeechobee 21-8.
Coach Van Camp said there was about three
minutes late in the quarter where Parkway re-
ally had the advantage.
"There is no one play in the game that
made an impact on the overall result. We let
it get away for three whole minutes. If we play
better were right in it," he added.
Three dunks by Parkway added to their mo-
mentum. A blown foul call by the referees also
hurt as Duelle Gore was fouled three times by
a defender and was called for a foul himself
when he retaliated.

Aaron Suarez and the Okeechobee
guards were constantly harassed by
Parkway defenders in Tuesday's loss.

Ricky Nieto, who scored 19 points, many of
them on nice drives to the hoop, said Okeecho-
bee learned a lot from playing in this tourna
ment.
"We all played really hard. It was just a lack
of execution on the offensive end. They were
a quick, athletic team and they were ready for
us. They played good defense," he added.
Nieto said he was proud of the Brahmans
effort and the fact they kept fighting despite a
deficit in the fourth quarter. Okeechobee did
cut the lead to six points, 55-49 on a three point
play by Nieto in the fourth quarter. Nieto scored
five points in a short stretch to keep Okeecho-
bee in the contest in the fourth quarter. "We
played until the end. We're not going to give up
just because we were down."
Okeechobee played in the consolation
game of the 8 team tournament on Wednes-
day. Parkway advanced to the championship
game.

2009: Another great year for Okeechobee sports

By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News
2009 was a busy year for Brahman sports as
Okeechobee had their share of success in several
sports.
The top sports story. .f l ... ,r was likely Lon-
nie Pryor signing to play college football at Florida
State University.
Pryor had a wonderful freshman year as he
rushed for 154 yards and four touchdowns, and
caught eight receptions, one for a touchdown.
Pryor actually was among the team leaders in
scoring with 30 points despite the fact he had only
a small fraction of the opportunities given to other
players.
Pryor also earned praise for his attitude and
blocking ability as he switched to a new position,
full back.
The Seminoles play New Years Day in the Ga-
tor Bowl against West Virginia. Pryor also had the
honor of playing for Coach Bobby Bowden dur-
ing the last year of his legendary career.
Without Pryor, Okeechobee high school foot-
ball suffered. Chris Branham resigned after one
of the best runs of any Brahman head coach in
history. He was replaced by Jeremy Beckham in
January.
Beckham made it to spring football practice
and led the team for six days before he was let go.
Mike Radebaugh coached the team in the spring
as Okeechobee lost to Palm Bay.
Okeechobee moved quickly and signed an
other of their football legends, Myron Jackson, a
former Florida State tight end and college assis-
tant coach.
The Brahmans didn't respond well to the
changes as the team lost all 10 regular season
games and their preseason game to Fort Pierce.
Okeechobee senior Walt Fortner was named
to the All Area team as he had a solid year return-
ing kicks, playing defense, and running the foot-
ball.
vJosh McCall was named to play in the Sebring
South Central Football Classic in December, and
played well at left guard.
TJ Allen is tentativelvy scheduled to play in
next months Outback All Star game in West Palm
Beach.
One Brahman did receive success on the
gridiron. Tony Kibler transferred schools after
two years as a starter at offensive tackle. His new

Okeechobee High School 2009 graduate
Lonnie Pryor is doing well in his Fresh-
man year at Florida State University.
school, Glades Day, won the Class IB state title
this month.
Another top story of the year was the Brah-
man boy's basketball program. The team missed
out on the state playoffs again and Jon Enrico
was let go after eight years on the job and two
post season appearances. Bryan Van Camp was
named to replace Enrico in June. He is another
Brahman alumnus.
David Jeune ended a record setting four year
basketball career at Okeechobee by signing a
scholarship to play for the University of North
Florida. Jeune is already getting significant play-
ing time for the Jacksonville school. He averages
13 minutes per game and roughly two points
and two rebounds per contest. UNF has won
four games so far this year, and have played such
teams as Alabama, Northwestern and Marquette.
Boys wrestling had another solid campaign as
three of their wrestlers, Donny Bush, Tyler Hayes,
and Josh Gruber reached the state tournament.
Bush ended a stellar career with another district
and conference title. Hayes signed to wrestle
at Newberry College in North Carolina. Coach
Bruce Jahner retired in the spring but was coaxed
back in the fall. Tom Kingery of Okeechobee was
inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame
for his work in Okeechobee during a banquet in
July.
Girls basketball had another winning season
in Tony Sherlock's year at the helm. They contin-
ued their winning ways during the first half of the
2009 season.

Girls volleyball lost their coach Jacque Rob-
inson but Todd Jones returned and the girls had
another winning season and a trip to the state re-
gional. The girls lost in the first round to Merritt
Island.
Other top accomplishments this year included
Malcolm Rush and Ricky Nieto making the state
finals in track. Nieto made it in the high jump and
Rush in the 200 meters.
Boy's baseball won the district title in May in
an exciting tournament in Fort Pierce. Jonathan
Crawford won all three games for Okeechobee.
He signed to play (, ii. _-, i. ., i1ii ,ii. University
of Florida in the fall. Okeechobee returns a strong
cast of players and should have a good chance to
defend their championship. Dustin Stokes signed
to play college baseball at Indian River State Col-
lege. Brahman Alumnus Mitch Markham was
named IRSC head Coach in the fall.
Girls softball fell in the semifinal game of their
district tournament ending a long streak of post
season appearances. The girls didn't have a single
senior on last year's squad. Jensen Beach and
surprising Suncoast made the post season.
Former Brahmans Mary Huff, Lauren Throop,
Kelci Breaux and Rachel Lowe were among a
long list of players who continued to play college
softball. Huff transferred from St. Pete College to
IRSC. Kelley Smiley signed to play softball at Au-
burn after a great career at IRSC.
The Brahman golf team continued to improve
as they once again reached the state regional in
Melbourne. Richard Donegan, Michael Watson,
Tim Gray, and Kodi Stephen were among a long
list of players who excelled this year.
Kailey Hoover became the first Brahman lady
golfer in awhile to make the state regional.

The boys cross country team continued to ex-
cel as they finished fifth in the state. Coach Mike

well against eventual state champion, Merritt
Island, in their playoff appearance. Ivan Torres
signed a college scholarship with Brewton Park
er College in Georgia. Lonnie Sears was named
coach of the year for the Treasure Lake Confer
ence.
Jorge Botello won coach of the year for girl's
soccer in 2009. He resigned his coaching position,
but still coached at Osceola Middle School.
Yearling boys soccer and volleyball enjoyed
unbeaten seasons in the fall.
Misael Alvarado and Laura Serrano both
signed college scholarships to run cross country
at Brewton Parker College.
The Pop Warner football program junior pee
wee team, boys 12 and under, won the North Di-
vision of the Treasure Coast Conference this year
after an unbeaten regular season, 10-0.
Several OCRA all star baseball teams played
in the Dixie Youth Florida State tournaments this
past summer in Marianna and other locations.
Osceola middle school ended a six-year win-
less drought in boy's basketball with a victory in

Bronson announces top ten complaints for 2009 PatriciaLouiseGoolsby
.Ie edironsd Real Fstate Broker

TALLAHASSEE-Unwanted telephone
sales calls continue to be the top gripe for
Florida residents, with more than 6,500 com-
plaints filed with the Florida Department of
Agriculture and Consumer Services in 2009.
Commissioner Charles H. Bronson has re-
leased the top 10 list of complaints and the
state's "Do Not Call" law continues to gener-
ate the most activity. In fact, there were 1,500
more written complaints filed by people on
the "Do Not Call" list than in 2008.
Consumers can pay an initial fee of $10,
with a $5 annual renewal fee, to have their
home and cell telephone numbers placed on
the list and avoid unwanted sales calls. The
fee is used only to administer the program.
The types of calls that are exempt from the
list can be found at http://www.800helpfla.
com/nosales.html.
The department's Division of Consumer
Services is the clearinghouse for consumer
complaints in Florida. The division regulates
11 industries but also attempts to mediate
problems consumers have with unregulated
businesses. Complaints about industries that
fall under the regulatory authority of another
agency are referred to that agency. There

were about 38,000 written complaints filed
in 2009, slightly more than the 37,227 filed in
2008. Bronson releases the top 10 list every
year to alert consumers about what the big-
gest problem areas are so they can be more
vigilant about protecting themselves.
Telemarketing complaints not involving
the "Do Not Call" law ranked second this
year with 3,609 complaints. Travel/vacation
plans dropped to third place with 2,781 com-
plaints, a decrease of more than 800 from
2008. Fourth on the list was credit/banking
with 2,774 complaints and rounding out the
top five was communications with 2,302
complaints.
Problems with motor vehicle sales and
accessories (such as truck tool boxes, bed-
liners and other items sold in auto parts sto-
ries) generated 1,644 complaints putting mo-
tor vehicle sales sixth on the list. There were
slightly fewer complaints, 1,625, against
motor vehicle repair shops which took the
number seven spot. The eighth category on
the list was medical issues, prompting 1,543
complaints. Landlord/tenant disputes con-
tinue to be in the top 10, this year at number
nine with 1,523 complaints. The final cat-

tions, please call 863-634-1437.

egory in the top ten was complaints against
real estate brokers/salespersons with 1,197
complaints.
Mr. Bronson encourages consumers to
file a complaint if they feel they have been
wronged by a business by calling the depart-
ment's helpline at 1-800 HELPFLA (1-800-
435-7352) or 1-800-FLAYUDA (1-800-352-
9832) for Spanish-speaking operators. The
department was able to obtain nearly $5.9
million in goods, services or cash refunds
for consumers in 2009. People can use those
same helpline numbers to find out the com-
plaint history of a business. Consumers can
also file complaints online by visiting the
Division of Consumer Services website at
http://www.800helpfla.com..
