An investigation is under-
way in an apparent arson fire
that gutted a structure at 982
N.E. 151h Avenue on Monday
night, Okeechobee County
Fire Rescue reported.
Crews were dispatched just
before 9 p.m. to the Douglas
Park residence and found a
vacant building fully involved
with flame, reports stated.

Neighbor helps
put out fire
No one was hurt after a fire
broke out in a kitchen in Dixie
Ranch Acres Sunday morning.
Okeechobee County Fire
Rescue responded to 7337
N.W. 861t Court just after 10
a.m. and found smoke coming
from the kitchen of the Shawn-
tell Ezard residence, reports
stated, .
Some $7,000 in damage
was done to the kitchen of the
home with damage reported
to the cabinets, the stove, the
walls and the ceiling, firemen
noted. ,
Firemen were on the scene
for about one hour making
sure the fire was out and help-
ing clean up the home.
A neighbor apparently was
able to come to the home and
put out the blaze before fire-
men could arrive.
The occupant of the home
told firemen that she had left
a pan unattended on the stove
and it apparently caught the
cabinets on fire.
The State Fire Marshall was
contacted to investigate the
blaze.

Man accused of DUIon bicycle

An Okeechobee man was ar-
rested on a charge of driving un-
der the influence Monday even
though he was riding a bicycle at
the time.
Richard Leon Lowry, 53, N.W
98th St., was also arrested on a
felony charge of resisting arrest
with violence. He was booked
into the Okeechobee County Jail
under a bond of $5,750.

erator he had a 9 mm handgun,
stated the report by Deputy Mark

Culberson tops in barrel racing

Wendy Culberson of
Okeechobee has been riding
horses competitively since she
was 5 years old. Now she is
approaching her dream of be-
ing the best barrel racer in the
world.
Mrs. Culberson, who lives
with her husband "Tommy" at .
a ranch off County Road 15B,
is currently ranked 17h in the
world standings for the Profes-
sional Rodeo Cowboy Asso-
ciation. She has already earned
nearly $10,000 this competition
year, which began in October. i
Her goal for this year is 2"
$40,000. If she can reach that
goal that would likely mean a
trip to the National finals Ro-.
deo in Las Vegas.
"No matter what I've ever .
done, sports, school, I'm super,
super competitive," she noted.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is
growing in Okeechobee, ac-
cording to an update Rotar-
ians received at their weekly
luncheon from one of the case
managers Kelly Owens.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
(BBBS) is currently serving
three elementary schools:
Seminole Elementary; North
Elementary; and Everglades El-
ementary. With the addition of
Everglades BBBS has also add-
ed an additional part-time case
manager, Kay McCool, a former
teacher within the Okeechobee


County School system.
This year alone there have
been 26 students matched and
24 are currently receiving ser-
vices through the BBBS pro-
gram.
The BBBS program was
piloted at Seminole Elemen-
tary School during the 2006-07
school year where eight "lit-
tles" were matched with their
"bigs".
BBBS is currently looking
for more volunteers to mentor
students at each of the elemen-
tary schools during the school
day and after the school day at
Everglades Elementary.
It doesn't take any special


skills or education to become
a "big". It just takes a caring
heart. To become a volunteer
one must only be able to do-
nate one hour of time every
week to read to their "little".
This can be done one hour
during one regular school day
or two 30 minute intervals on
two days during the school
week. At Everglades the "bigs"
will be able to mentor and
read with their littlee" after the
school day has ended.
The program that they are
currently working under is the

gone. A neighbor told them if
his bicycle was gone then Lowry
was probably out.
Law enforcement then made
contact with Lowry in the 600
block of N.W. 98th St.
After some conversation, Sgt.
Stark told the man he was under
arrest. As Deputy Shireman tried
to handcuff the man, Lowry
pulled away. The deputy along
with Deputy Sergeant Clif Gill
took the man to the ground and
placed him in restraints.


' Deputy Shireman then no-
ticed that he was cut between
the thumb and forefinger of his
left hand. While there was blood
on the wound it was not Depu-
ty Shireman's, but was from a
wound on Lowry's elbow.
The deputy was then sent to
the hospital emergency room
where his hand was treated. Dep-
uty Shireman also had scrapes
to his left knee and leg that were
treated. The deputy was also giv-
en medication to treat the blood
exposure to his hand.

wanted horses so bad. I was the
baby and when I came along, she
figured if I got interested in hors-
es she could get one. I received
a pony and they bought a horse
for her. However we had to take
care of them and that was a lot of
work," she said.
She noted her parents taught
her responsibility with these hors-
es. They made her earn everything
she has received.
Mrs. Culberson was born in
Michigan, but came to Florida
when she was less than a year
old.
"As far as I'm concerned I'm a
native. I grew up in Indiantown,"
she said.
Mrs. Culberson knew early
on that she had a knack for rid-
ing. She never takes credit for it
however. She always praises the
horses she rides, adding that she
couldn't win without them.
"The first show I went to I won
a trophy in Indiantown for the In-
diantown riding club. I competed
in six events like poles, barrels
and hair pin. I rode in each event
and was the person that did the
best," she noted.
That was in 1970. She hasn't
stopped riding since.
Today she has a nice 20 acre
ranch and owns a small herd of
horses. All of the horses are gen-
tle, and many have been very suc-
cessful in barrel racing.
She attended Martin County
High School and then lived west
of Palm City for 18 years before
moving to Okeechobee.
She is around horses all day
long. Not only is her ranch full of
horses, but so is her place of em-
ployment. She works' at Payson
Park, a thoroughbred training cen-
ter east of Indiantown. She has 22
years with Payson Park. She also
has worked in the off season at
area ranches.
Mrs. Culberson said being
around beautiful, well trained
thoroughbreds helped her with
her barrel racing. She knows first
hand how to train horses and how
to treat them:
.In the last 10 years she has
started pursuing barrel racing a
little more intently. In the begin-
ning she competed in local shows
and National Barrel Horse Asso-

and second grade. This program
promotes literacy and a love of
reading. It also strives to build
confidence in children during the
most important and impression-
able years.
Students are matched on a
teacher referral basis.- Once a
referral is received, parent per-
mission is requested. Once per-
mission is granted, Mrs. Owens

citation events. She said that each
horse that she's trained has gotten
better and better and so has her
career.
One of her top performances
came in 1998 when she attended
the 1998 Futurity in Fort Smith,
Ark. It was an event that featured
4-year-old horses. There were 800
entries. She finished 20th overall
aboard her horse "Twin Cash."
She called him "Red."
She later sold Red but was
able to purchase her ranch in
Okeechobee with the money and
she continued training younger
horses. She also had an "up and
coming" horse that she knew
could develop into a top horse
as well. He is her current horse,
"My Native Call." His nickname is
"Snip."
Snip, 11, was having a great
year last year until he was injured.
He had to rest for a year.
"He has successfully complet-
ed every goal I've put in front of
him, he is an awesome horse,"
she noted.
With Snip she has competed in
Novice horse events, open horse,
and Sunshine Barrel Racing Asso-
ciation events. She also started to
compete in pro rodeos. She has
won or placed in just about every
rodeo in this area. She qd'alified
for 2005-2006 South East Circuit
Finals for PRCA. In 2007 she won
the PRCA circuit.
"This horse, he's phenomenal.
I've had a lot of offers. He's earned
over $100,000," she said.
It is'hard to work full time, take
care of a ranch and rodeo, she
said. "I kind of squeeze it all in.
Everything is coming together.
"Last year I was able to go a
little more. We were so successful
last year, now everybody wants
me to go to make the National Fi-
nals Rodeo," she ,added.
She often will work a 14 hour
day, and then travel all weekend
to a rodeo. It doesn't leave a lot of
time for herself.
The success has continued
this year. Already she has earned
over $10,000 this year at smaller
rodeos.
In October Mrs. Culberson
won the Martin County Sheriff's
Rodeo in her home town of Indi-
antown. She noted she got a lot
of positive feelings from winning
that event.
"It's something we love. The
cowboy way of life is something

namic, Indicators of Basic Early

form of testing and Stanford-10
scores. BBBS also monitors "lit-
tles" for attendance and behavior
where needed.
In addition to the use of the
information from the various
tests, they request input from
the teacher, volunteer and the
case worker in areas of confi-
dence, competence and caring.
The case managers then compile
all the data and provide an end
of the year assessment for each
matched "little".

thing you would pick to do out of
the blue," she said.
In career earnings she has
reached about $175,000. She has
competed as far away as Okla-
homa. Last summer she entered
in rodeos as far as Montana, Utah
and Idaho.
"I had a really good start last
year but I had one horse in that
top level. I have two others com-
ing along. If you-have one horse,
and he gets hurt, you're done,"
she said.
Mrs. Culberson said it also is
very expensive to attend rodeos
across the country. She has lucked
into sharing some expenses with
friends who compete in rodeos
as well. Still with the rising costs
of fuel, it is often cost prohibitive.
She said Payson Park helped spon-
sor her last year. She is looking for
some local sponsorship here in
Okeechobee.
"Sponsorships are vital," she
said. "If you have a consistent
horse, and he gets to a rodeo, he
can compete."
Mrs. Culberson said Snip tied
with last years' world champion
at Fort Worth, Texas on Feb..2-3,
which shows what kind of poten-
tial he has.
She noted that many of the
cowboys and cowgirls do rodeo
full time and don't have jobs. She
said the top 15 cowboys and cow-
girls are all sponsored.
Mrs. Culberson has won ro-
deos in Texas, Louisiana, Geor-
gia, Florida, Arkansas and other
states.
"It's definitely an adrenalin
rush," she noted.
Barrel racing is really for all
ages. Some ladies are in their 60's,
she explained. At last years circuit
finals she was the oldest competi-
tor.
"Young girls seem to come out
of the woodwork. They go from
college rodeo to pro rodeo," she
said.
You must be 18 years old to
compete in the PRCA.
Mrs. Culberson won't be at the.
Okeechobee Rodeo this year. That
weekend, Arcadia's -rodeo has a
$5,000 added purse. That same
weekend she will compete in ro-
deos in Montgomery, Alabama
and Houston, Texas. She notes
that is an example of how grueling
and demanding the schedule is.
I "It is really, really hard to do


this," she added.
She has had her share of suc-
cess at the Okeechobee rodeos.
She won the 2007 Labor Day Ro-
deo and was the 2007 Speckled
Perch rodeo winner. She has fin-
ished second seven times.
"I was trying to win that rodeo
so hard, I finally won it back to
back," she said.
Snip also had the second fast-
est time ever recorded at the Oca-
la rodeo.
Culberson breaks and train
all of her own horses. She owns
eight horses, with six at her ranch.
She also teaches cowboys and
girls how to rope bulls.
"I have made horses and ro-
deo my life, my passion and my
career."

enth place in 2006;
Two time southeaster circuit fi-
nals average earner 2005 3rd place,

2004 Fort Smith Barrel racing
futurity finalist;
2004 Florida Barrel Racers fu-
turity reserve champion;
2003 Rodeo Houston qualifier,
(top 60 in'the country);
2003 Sunshine Barrel Racers
open saddle winners;
2003 Sunshine Barrel Racers
novice horse saddle winner; and,
2007 Won or placed in 41 of
75 rodeos.

15"' Avenue on Monday night,
Okeechobee County Fire Res-
cue reported.
Crews were dispatched just
before 9 p.m. to the Douglas
Park residence and found a va-


cant building fully involved with
flame, reports stated.
No one was inside the home
and power had actually been
turned off to the structure sev-
eral months ago, firemen said.
A report from Lt. Robert Ban-
field noted that 10 firemen from
the County and City, along with
five units, were on the scene
close to three hours putting out
the blaze and cleaning up the

Malinda Elizabeth Yates,
23, N.W. Fifth St., Okeechobee,
was arrested Feb. 22 by Deputy
Corporal Timothy A. Higgins on
a warrant charging her with the
felony of driving while license
suspended. Her bond was set at
$2,500.
Mark K. Hormuth, 50, South-
ernview Drive, Zephyrhills, was.
arrested Feb. 22 by Deputy Har-
old Hancock on an order from
the Department of Corrections
charging him with violation of
community control. He was re-
leased on his own recognizance.
Jesse James Lyng, 25, N.W.
102nd St. Okeechobee, was ar-
rested Feb. 22 by Detective Rick
Durfee on a felony charge of
possession of a controlled sub-
stance, and a misdemeanor
charge of obstruction by a dis-
guised person. His bond was set
at $3,500.
Ernest William Chapman,
27, Okeechobee, was arrested
Feb. 23 by Deputy Matthew Hurst
on a felony charge of burglary,
and misdemeanor charges of
theft and criminal mischief. His
bond was set at $7,000.
Tracey Ann Murphy, 44, N.E.
54th Trail, Okeechobee, was ar-
rested Feb. 23 by Deputy Donna
H. Lee on an Okeechobee County
warrant charging her with viola-
tion of probation driving while
license suspended habitual of-
fender. She is being held without
bond.
Nicki Lynn Gatlin, 28, S.E.
15th Ave., Okeechobee, was ar-
rested Feb. 23 by Deputy Donna


H. Lee on a felony charge of pos-
session of cocaine, and a misde-
meanor charge of possession of
drug paraphernalia. She is being
held without bond.
Raymond John Lisi, 40,
S.E. 14th Terrace, Okeechobee,
was arrested Feb. 23 by Deputy
Wayne Douglas on a felony
charge of aggravated assault
(two counts), and misdemeanor
charges of battery and criminal
mischief. His bond was set at
$7,000.
Deena Jean Williams, 22,
N.W. 354th Court, Okeechobee,
was arrested Feb. 24 by the OCPD
on a charge of driving under the
influence. She was released on
her own recognizance.
Allen Clinton Mauldin, 29,
N.E. 304th St., Okeechobee,
was arrested Feb. 25 by Deputy
Steven McKinley on warrants
charging him with failure to ap-
pear worthless check, failure to
appear worthless check, failure
to appear contempt of FTA ar-
raigment, violation of probation
- driving while license suspended
(felony), violation of probation -
high speed/wanton fleeing, viola-
tion of probation driving while
license suspended with priors.
He is being held without bond.
Ronnie Lee Walker, 20,
Flippen Ave., Avon Park, was ar-
rested Feb. 25 by Deput Lieuten-
ant Keith Murrish on a warrant
charging him with violation of
probation grand theft and vio-
lation of probation burglary of
a conveyance. He is being held
without bond.

EVOLUTION: This is something I have a question about. If Adam
and Eve are the parents of everyone in the world, where did Cain
and Able get their wives? Did they marry their sisters? Then, when
the whole world was flooded and everyone drowned, Noah and his
wife and his sons and their wives were the only survivors, then isn't
the whole world now related to Noah and his family? Sounds like a
whole lot of inbreeding going on in the Bible.

TRASH: You know I go out at least twice a week with my daugh-
ter or my husband for lunch or dinner. I can not get over something
that I see all the time including today. Diapers -- yes diapers in the
parking lot -- and not just in the parking lot, right at the front door.
Today there were three diapers, one in the third parking spot up
front, one sitting in the ashtray sitting right in front of the door and
one sitting on top of the newspaper stand. Obviously, we have a lot
of lazy mothers or fathers in town, but this is a situation that is hap-
pening all the time and I mean all the time. Has anyone else noticed
this?

SUSPENSION: My grandson's parents were called and told that
my grandson has been suspended for a day. He got the referral a
week ago. However, the Dean stated he had about 50 referrals on
his desk, was the reason why they were being contacted a week
later. Sounds like he needed to be at his desk, catching up. If I had
50 referrals on my desk, I'd be asking my teachers, "What's going
on?" My grandson got the referral in the sex education class. I know
it may not be called that but that's what the class consist of. The
teacher finished her lesson and my grandson had a question. She
refused to answer his question. She directed him to ask the school
nurse. When this was brought to the Dean's attention he responded
by saying it's the teacher's prerogative to answer or not. My question
is this, why teach students a particular lesson if they're not allowed
to ask questions? If the teacher is not comfortable enough to answer
the questions, maybe she isn't qualified to teach that particular class.
Anyway, because he insisted on her answering his question, he was
given a referral and then suspended. What do you parents think?

SERVICE DOG: I just read the article about Chery Birgholtz re-
garding her service dog. I have worked with people with fibromy-
algia; it is a very painful and debilitating disease. You need all the
help you can get since it is so tough doing even the simplest things
when it flairs up. If you are having so many problems with people
about the animal for goodness sake get him a harness that says he
is a working dog. That would solve all your problems. I too am a
dog lover have three of them, and yes if you are in a store with a dog
without a working dog harness, I would presume it is a working dog.
But a lot of other people just live to make everyone else's lives miser-
able. Just hold your head up high and disregard the remarks, they
are not even worth a response. Good luck to you and your beautiful
working dog.

WRONG ADDRESS: This is to the people who get the wrong
mail, like their neighbor's or someone who lives on their streets
mail. Do you throw it away or do you put on it, "not at this address"
and return it to the post office or your mailbox? My son was waiting
on a very important letter and it went to the wrong mailbox and he
never got it. But I bet it had the wrong address on the same street. I
always put not at this address and send it back to the post office or
if I know the people I deliver it to the people. And that's the way it
should be done.

WELFARE: I am calling about the system in Okeechobee County.
Apparently it only works for who they want it to work for. I recently
had my child taken out of this town by his mother, who has a history
of violence, bi-polar, and jeopardizing my child's welfare. I tried to
file an injunction and they denied it. So in the meantime I have to
wait two weeks and let my son be subjected to this, and me with my
hands tied and not being able to do anything about it. So what does
it take to make the system believe that you're not lying about your
child's welfare?

SEATS: Adding seats to the Agri-Civic Center is a typical waste of
tax payer's money. Another $300,000 for 3,000 seats? Unbelievable!
Now, the TOTAL COST of this center is over $9 million! For a couple
more million, you could have had a real nice amphitheater or civic
center that held about six or seven thousand and would or could
have bought in such events as concerts by national acts, Comedians,
sporting events, and so on. But, no, were stuck with pig shows, mini
horse shows, rodeos or anything that's going to benefit the ranchers
here in town. Way to plan ahead county commishes, cannot WAIT
to see you GONE!

DOG: To the woman with the service dog, I don't think you can
blame people for saying something about a dog being in a business
if you don't have some kind of harness or tag identifying him as a
service dog.

Protect IFAS from


major funding cuts

Faced with a state budget crisis,
University of Florida's President
Bernard Machen
is contemplating
drastic cuts in
funding for UF's i
Institute of Food
and Agricultural
Sciences (IFAS)
and research
directly tied to
agriculture. Dr. Michael W.
Machen's knife Sparks
could slice criti-
cal work done at Lake Alfred's Cit-
rus Research and Education Cen-
ter (CREC), a division of IFAS.
This would be devastating to
the state's $9 billion citrus indus-
try. Over the past 90 years, CREC
has been at the forefront of citrus
research doing everything from
developing new varieties to im-
proving production techniques.
Florida citrus would not be a
$9 billion economic engine if it
weren't for the tremendous sup-
port we've received from CREC/
IFAS.
One of the major challenges
Florida citrus is grappling with
is citrus greening, an insidious
disease that rapidly kills trees
and spreads like wildfire. Green-
ing is now endemic to the state
and threatens citrus to the core.
We currently have more than 100
research projects underway de-
signed to combat greening and
many are IFAS administered with
CREC serving as Ground Zero in
the fight. This research, which
may well determine the future
of Florida citrus, must continue
unabated to achieve maximum
results. We can't do this on a
shoestring budget. I certainly un-
derstand the tough choices Dr.
Machen must address. UF has
been asked to slash $50 million
and obviously the process is go-
ing to be painful for many seg-
ments of the University. That fact
is crystal clear and I am not envi-


ous of Dr. Machen's task at hand.
With this in mind, we are not
asking that IFAS be granted "sa-
cred cow' status as some observ-
ers have suggested. But Machen
should make cuts equitable
across the University without a
disproportionate cut to IFAS. In a
recent public statements, Dr. Ma-
chen says he will focus on "tar-
geted reductions in programs"
and not across the board cuts.
If this means gouging IFAS pro-
grams, Machen is making a seri-
ous mistake.
Let me remind him that UF,
as a land-grant institution, has a
special responsibility to serve the
needs of Florida agriculture. That
was part of the deal when the
federal government gave massive
tracts of land to the University
and we believe wholesale cuts to
IFAS's budget would not be liv-
ing up to the terms of the agree-
ment.
And for the readers who think
the issue is just about growers
and the people who rely on the
IFAS for research, information
and education, consider this: Ag-
riculture is a key part of Florida's
economy. More than 100 individ-
ual industry sectors in the state
are agriculture related providing a
$54 billion economic impact and
almost 391,000 full-time and part-
time jobs. Citrus alone has a $9
billion economic impact on Flor-
ida while creating 90,000 jobs.
Citrus also serves as the state's
signature industry producing 80
percent of the orange juice con-
sumed domestically while fortify-
ing the economies of many rural
Florida communities. While bio-
tech start-ups and venture capital
firms grab all of the headlines,
Florida agriculture chugs along
providing a stable economic
foundation for Florida.
In other words, hurt Florida
agriculture through cuts to IFAS
and you hurt the entire state. Be-
fore Dr. Machen makes any final
decisions, he should keep this in
mind.

BRIGHTON Pamela Hudson
knows that teachers must be cre-
ative in order to get the prompt
attention of students.
She may twirl a baton, do a
little dance, or hatch a Triassic in-
vertebrate right in the classroom.
Of course, the kids love it. Some-
times a fresh approach can kick-
start a lesson that would other-
wise have no meaning for second
graders.
They may not comprehend the
value of academics at this young
age, but they know what fun is.
Ms. Hudson is Pemayetv
Emahakv's Teacher of the Year.
She first began working with stu-
dents when she taught majorette
baton twirling, and eventually
she got into the school system in
Okeechobee County.
She has experience with ele-
mentary and secondary students,
and has recently earned her read-
ing endorsement.
The charter school uses an
innovative blend of academics,
technology,. Seminole studies
and Creek language. Her second
graders have learned to use the
bookmark tool when they look
for appropriate websites on their
laptops; and they are immersed
in Creek language studies, too.
Her favorite language arts les-
son is the classic Reader's The-
ater, which gives students oral flu-
ency when pronouncing words
they may be unfamiliar with, or
have used incorrectly during ev-
eryday situations. Instead of just
reading words out loud from a
text, Reader's Theater allows stu-

dents to hear the natural rythym
and flow of words while they read

Pamela Hudson makes it fun
when she encourages them to
loosen up and wear props like
hats and sunglasses. Sometimes
they even take their Reader's The-
ater on a spontaneous trip to an-
other class. This performance is
entertaining for them and it gives
learning a boost.
Ms. Hudson makes learning
fun, even if she has to perform in
front of a second grade audience.
She can see the reaction on their
faces and it pleases her, and gives
her a reason to be a teacher.
"If they are glad I'm here, then
I'm glad, too," Pamela Hudson
said.

lands County.
Commissioners will consider
priorities for road repairs. The
current road department budget
includes $1.65 million for paving.
The board will be considering a
proposed list for roads for resur-
facing that will require little or no
preparations for resurfacing. To-
tal estimated cost for the entire
list is $851,440. The list includes
roads in the Douglas Brown area,
Treasure Island/Everglades Bou-
levard, Connors Gables areas as
well as all or portions of the fol-
lowing roads: N.W. 38th Avenue,
N. W. 1141" Ave, N.W./N.E. 144th
Drive, N. E. 4811t Avenue, S.W.
67"' Drive, S.W. 21st Parkway,
N.W 10th Terrace, S.W Seventh
Avenue, and N.W 160"' Drive. A
second proposed list of roads to
be resurfaced will be presented
to the board' in the near future.
As a means of bridging the
gap between ambulance service
fees and the cost of operating
the EMS portion of the fire/res-
cue service, commissioners will
consider either an assessment
similar to the fire assessment or
an ad valorem tax. A quarter of
mill tax has been proposed. This
would mean for every $100,000
of assessed value, the property
owner would pay an additional
$25 annually. According to fig-
ures furnished by the property
appraiser's office this would gen-
erate $588,000.
In other action the board is
expected to:
*discuss joining with High-
lands, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee
and Hendry counties to form a
rural regional metropolitan plan-
ning organization that would ne-
gotiate for federal road improve-.
ment funds;
*receive a presentation from


the consulting firm of Glatting,
Jackson Kercher, and Anglin on
development of a county wide
master park plan;
*receive the annual report
of the workforce development
board;
*determine use of $300,000
Florida Department of Transpor-
tation enhancement funds for fis-
cal year 08/09;
*consider purchasing the
leased trailers currently being
used as office space by the road
department and parks and recre-
ation department;
*authorize the chairman to
execute a grant application to
upgrade the E-911 system;
terminate a lease at the in-
dustrial and park and authorize a
new lease for the same property;
consider acceptance of a do-
nated ATV converted for medical
use;
*appoint three members to
the Okeechobee County Agri-
Civic Center Advisory Commit-
tee with terms to expire March,
1,2012;
*appoint four regular and/or
one alternate member to the
consecution licensing board with
terms to expire at various dates;


and
S*appoint two regular and one
alternate member to the plan-
ning board/board of adjustments
and appeals with terms to expire


March, 2011.

Dunklin Memorial Camp
will be having a prayer banquet

Outreach offers
service to children
The Family Outreach Center
at Sacred Heart offers a service
to youth and children by giv-
ing free classes in martial arts.

from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

education classes
Sacred Heart Catholic

be offering religious education

Connie Hamilton
Constance Gene "Connie"
Hamilton, age 60 of Okeechobee,
died Feb. 25, 2008 at Hospice of
the Treasure Coast, Ft. Pierce.
Mrs. Hamilton was born in Ohio
and was a former resident of
Louisville, Ohio and Fort Pierce.
She was employed by the United
States Postal Service.
She is survived by her hus-
band of 21 years, Cornell "Sonny"
Hamilton of Qkeechobee; son,
Rick McGuire of Louisville; two
grandchildren; and her mother,
Vi Schmitt of Okeechobee.
Yates Funeral Home and Cre-
matory is in charge of arrange-
ments.

Bertha A. Moore
Bertha A. Moore, age 77 of
Vaughn Lane in Smithville, Tenn.,
died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008 at her
residence. She was born in Hern-
shaw, W Va., the daughter of the
late Nick and Mary Kinder Albu.
She was raised in West Virginia
where she went to East Bank
High School in East Bank, W Va.,
and worked at Emble's Depart-
ment Store. She received her LPN

She married Cylde 0. Moore
in 1948, the couple with their son
Steven, moved to Florida in 1962
living in West Palm Beach and-
Okeechobee for 43 years, where
daughter Lee Ren'ee was born in
1965. In 2005 she left her home in
Florida to move closer to her fam-
ily in Tennessee.
She is preceded in death by
her parents, her husband, Clyde,
siblings, Nick Albu, Gene Albu,
Virginia Gordon, Elizabeth Kirk,
Bob Albu, Earl Albu, and Helen
Prichard.
She is survived by her son, Ste-
ven M. Moore of Smithville, Tenn;
daughter, Lee R. Leake (Pam) of
Old Hickory, Tenn., grandchil-
dren, Claire and Clarence Leake,
brother in-law, Walter Prichard,
sister in-law, Gloria Albu and
many dearly loved nieces and
nephews.
A memorial service will be
held, March 1, from 3 until 5 p.m.
at the Church of the Nazarene
Fellowship Hall in Smithville, Ten-
nessee.
In lieu of flowers, please send
memorial donations to Alive Hos-
pital of Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home and
Cremation Center of Sparta Ten-
nessee are in charge of arrange-

OHS wins track meet

Okeechobee News
Okeechobee defeated Trea-
sure Coast at both the running
events and the field events at the
opening track meet of the year
on Monday at OHS.
Okeechobee girls won 63-44
and the boys prevailed 79-49 at
a rare meet at Okeechobee High
School.
Bryan Suarez, Malcolm Rush,
and James Shanks played key
roles for the boy's team. Monica
Koger and Jolene Skeen led the
girl's squad to victory.
On the boy's side, Okeechobee
took the 4 x 800 meter relay with
a time of 8:44. Treasure Coast fin-
ished at 9:28.
Malcolm Rush won the 100
yard dash with a time of 11.36.
James Shanks of Okeechobee
was third with a time of 11.6 sec-
onds.
Bryan Suarez won the 1600
meter run with a time of 4:37.
Eddie Guerrero finished second
with a time of 4:47. Alan Najera
of Okeechobee finished fourth
with a time of five minutes flat.
Treasure Coast managed
to take the 4 x 100 meter relay
when Okeechobee dropped the
baton midway through the race.
Treasure Coast won with a time
of 46.77. OHS' time-was 53.71.
Matt Skipper won the 400
meter dash with a time of 55.42.
Lonnie Pryor of OHS was second
with a time of 55.85.
Austin Willard was the only
competitor in the 300 meter hur-


dles. He had a time of 54.11.
Eddie Guerrero won the 800
meter run with a time of 2:09.
Lionel Jones of Okeechobee was
third with a time of 2:12.
Rush took the 200 meter run
with a time of 23.58. Shanks fin-
ished third with a time of 24.03.
Suarez came back to take
the 3200 meter run with a time
of 10:07. Rafael Denova finished
second with a time of 11:18.
OHS also won the 4 x 400 me-
ter relay.
In the field events, James
Shanks won the high jump with
a jump of 5'6". Ricky Nieto fin-
ished second and David Jeune
was third.
Treasure Coast took the long
jump and the triple jump. De-
forest Shanks of Okeechobee
finished third in the triple jump
with a time of 32'51/4".
Stephen Smith finished second
in the shot putt with a distance of
39'4". Tony Kibler finished third
with a throw of 38'6".
On the girl's side, Treasure
Coast took the 4 x 800 meter re-
lay while Jolene Skeen took the
100 meter hurdles with a time of
22.23. Okeechobee also took the
100. meter dash.
Okeechobee girls also won
in the 4 x 100 meter relay with a
time of 54.33. Treasure Coast was
disqualified by a lane violation.
Monica Koger won the 400
meter dash with a time of 1:09.
Skeen took the 300 meter hur-
dles and Markeisha Youmans
won the 200 meter run with a


time of 27.44.
In the field events, Fischer of
Okeechobee won the high jump
with aleap of 4'2". Monica Koger
won the long jump with a leap of
16'7". Youmans took third with
a long jump of 15'33/4". Jewel
Buck finished second in the shot
put with a throw of 26'9", 11
inches off the leading score.
The track team has a busy
week as they traveled to a tri-
meet on Wednesday at Lawn-
wood Stadium in Fort Pierce. Sat-
urday they compete in the Port
St. Lucie invitational.
